1996 CHRYSLER SEBRING COUPE. CONSUMER WRITES REGARDING CHRYSLER EMPLOYEE LUNCH BREAK ACTIVITIES *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED HE EXPERIENCED MECHANICAL FAILURE WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH. THE LEFT FRONT BALL JOINT SUDDENLY SEPARATED AND JAMMED THE TIRE UP INTO THE FENDER WELL AT AN AWKWARD ANGLE. THE CONSUMER STATED IT COST OVER $800 TO REPLACE THE SUSPENSION PARTS ON BOTH SIDES. THE CONSUMER STATED THE REASON FOR THE FAILURE, WAS DUE TO LACK OF LUBRICATION, BECAUSE YEARS AGO, MANUFACTURERS CHOSE TO DELETE THE INEXPENSIVE GREASE FITTING ON SUSPENSION PARTS AND INSTEAD CHOSE SUBSTITUTED SEALED BALL JOINTS THAT WERE SUBJECT TO FAILURE. *JB UPDATED 04/26/11.

LOWER LATERAL ARM BROKE ON OUR 1996 CHRYSLER SEBRING. DEALER AND CHRYSLER HAVE REFUSED TO FIX THE CAR UNDER RECALL. THIS IS THE 3RD MAJOR FAILURE AND INCONVENIENCE OF THIS PART. THE LAST FAILURE WAS 8 MOTHS AGO. THERE IS CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE HERE AS WELL AS A MECHANICAL DEFECT. *JB

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE SHOOK, WHICH CAUSED A LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE REPAIR SHOP, WHO DETERMINED THAT THE RUBBER ON THE FRONT LOWER BALL JOINTS HAD SPLIT. THERE WAS A NHTSA RECALL # 99V066003 WHICH PERTAINED TO THE LOWER BALL JOINT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN.

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 15 MPH THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE FLIPPED SIDEWAYS, THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT SHEERED OFF THE OIL FILTER AND KNOCKED IT FROM THE MANIFOLD. THIS OCCURRED ON AN ICY ROAD DURING NORMAL BRAKING WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED TO THE CONTACTS HOME. THE DEALERSHIP AND MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED HOWEVER, NO REPAIRS HAVE BEEN MADE.

DT: JUNE 30 2005 THE LEFT FRONT BALL JOINT BROKE WHILE DRIVING. THE CONSUMER WAS DRIVING 35 MPH. THERE WAS A NOISE, SPARKS WERE FLYING, AND THE CONSUMER LOST STEERING CONTROL AND BOUNCED OFF A CURVE. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS ON THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS RECENTLY INSPECTED IN MAY AND NO PROBLEMS WERE REPORTED. THERE WAS A RECALL, BUT THE CONSUMER WAS NOT AWARE OF IT. THE CONSUMER NOTICED THERE WAS A CORROSION PROBLEM WITH THE BALL JOINT. THE CONSUMER DIDN'T HAVE THE RECALL NUMBER. THE VEHICLE IS NOW HAVING REPAIR WORK DONE. CHRYSLER IS WILLING TO PAY THE REPAIRS. THE BEARINGS HAD TO BE REPLACED, THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL BEARING WAS REPLACED TWICE. *JB

I was driving on the highway; all of a sudden my right dash speaker started on fire. I had a Bubbler in my vehicle, so I used that to put it out. Since then, my radio no longer works, nor does mileage show & gas gauge fluctuates, & cannot tell when it is actually empty.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 CHRYSLER SEBRING. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 75 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE OR REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. MY 1996 CHRYSLER SEBRING CONVERTIBLE ALMOST CAUGHT FIRE FROM THE DASH STEREO SPEAKERS MID 10/05 .. SCREECHING NOISES CAME FROM MY SPEAKERS AND THEN SMOKE BEGAN TO COME OUT OF THEM. I TURNED OFF THE STEREO AND SOON AFTER WENT TO MY MECHANIC. WHEN THEY TURNED MY STEREO ON SMOKE CAME OUT OF THE DASH SPEAKERS AGAIN. I ASKED THEM TO PULL THE FUSE SO THAT IT WOULDN'T HAPPEN AGAIN. ON 2/16/06 I CALLED CHRYSLER. I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM THEM DATED 2/21/06 STATING THAT THEY WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT BECAUSE THE TIME OR MILEAGE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. ON RECALL SIGHTS I HAVE FOUND WHERE THERE WERE RECALLS FOR THE SAME PROBLEM IN SLIGHTLY NEWER MODELS. THIS COULD HAVE ENDED IN INJURY OR EVEN DEATH TO MYSELF AND MY TWO NIECES THAT I WAS DRIVING TO SCHOOL THAT MORNING. I AM HOPING THAT YOU CAN HELP ME HAVE THE PROBLEM CORRECTED BY CHRYSLER. PURCHASED VEHICLE IN APR 05 FROM FRIENDS. WITHOUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION, THE BUTTON CAN BE PRESSED AND THE SHIFT LEVER MOVED. WHILE RUNNING, THE BUTTON CAN BE PRESSED AND THE SHIFT LEVER MOVED WITHOUT HAVING TO PUT FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. VEHICLE BROUGHT IN TO DEALER AND RECALL C45 ALLEGED TO BE COMPLETED 10-25-05. DUE TO MY CHILDREN NOW USE THE CAR, A RETURN WAS MADE TO A DEALER 12-01-09 FOR RECALL. INVOICE STATES "REINSPECT RECALL #C45." WHILE WAITING, SERVICE ADVISOR APPEARED TO DISCUSS RECALL AND STATE THAT I NEEDED TO REPLACE THE INTERLOCK CABLE. INVOICE STATED "DID RECALL C45 REPLACE SHIFTER ROD," "NEED TO REPLACE INTERLOCK CABLE, $227.00." SO IT APPEARS AFTER DOING ANOTHER SHIFTER ROD, MAYBE THE RECALL SHOULD BE FOR THE INTERLOCK CABLE AS IN ANOTHER COMPLAINT # 10126915. THOUGH I SAID THIS WAS A RECALL AND A SAFETY ISSUE, HE REPEATED I'D HAVE TO PAY FOR THE INTERLOCK CABLE. ABOUT TO LEAVE, A LONG SPRING WAS FOUND ON DRIVERS FLOOR AREA. DT: CONSUMER RECEIVED NHTSA RECALL 04V021000. CHECKED VEHICLE, AND CONSUMER FOUND THAT VEHICLE DID HAVE A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER. ONCE CONSUMER PICKED UP VEHICLE FROM DEALER FOUND THAT VEHICLE WOULD STILL COME OUT OF PARK WITHOUT KEY IN IGNITION. CONSUMER CONTACTED THE DEALER AGAIN, AND DEALER TOLD CONSUMER THAT SHE WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR A CABLE TO BE REPLACED. HOWEVER, DEALER DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. ALSO, CONSUMER CONTACTED MANUFACTURER, AND MANUFACTURER TOLD CONSUMER THAT VEHICLE COULD BE TAKEN TO ANOTHER DEALER. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 CHRYSLER SEBRING CONVERTIBLE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE WAS STRUCK BY ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED AND THE CONTACT WAS TRAPPED IN HER VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS RELEASED DEBRIS THAT BEGAN BURNING HER FACE. THERE WAS ALSO A LARGE CLOUD OF SMOKE AS IF CHEMICALS WERE BEING RELEASED FROM THE AIR BAGS. SHE WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL AND A PHYSICIAN STATED THAT SHE RECEIVED SECOND DEGREE BURNS. THE CONTACT HAS A COPY OF THE POLICE REPORT AND PICTURES OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER CONCLUDED THAT THAT AIR BAGS WERE NOT MANUFACTURED WITH ANY HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 140,000.

MY AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT PERIODICALLY COMES ON FOR APPROX 30 SECONDS AND THEN GOES OFF. ON 10/12/06 I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND IT CAME ON AND OFF AND THEN REMAINED ON. I IMMEDIATELY TELEPHONED THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP (LIVONIA CHRYSLER JEEP, MICHIGAN) AND TOOK THE VEHICLE IN. THE LIGHT WAS ON AND THE TECHNICIAN HOOKED UP A HAND HELD DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE AND A "PASSENGER SQUIB OPEN" CODE CAME UP. I WAS ASKED TO LEAVE THE VEHICLE. I SUBSEQUENTLY RECEIVED A TELEPHONE CALL STATING THAT THE AIRBAG LIGHT WENT OFF AND THERE WERE FOUR STORED INACTIVE CODES. HOWEVER, SINCE THERE WERE NO ACTIVE CODES, THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DIAGNOSED. I INQUIRED IF THE VEHICLE WAS SAFE TO DRIVE AND WOULD MY AIRBAGS WORK IF IN AN ACCIDENT OR COULD THE AIRBAG DEPLOY FOR NO REASON. THE REPRESENTATIVE COULD NOT ADVISE ME. I STRESSED MY CONCERN BUT WAS TOLD TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE UNTIL THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AND TO BRING IT BACK IN. WELL, THAT IS WHAT I DID THIS LAST TIME. I MUST ADMIT THAT THE REPRESENTATIVE WAS VERY NICE AND TRIED TO HELP, BUT HONESTLY DID NOT HAVE THE ANSWERS. ON 10/16/06 I PICKED UP THE VEHICLE. NO LIGHT WAS ON. ON 10/17/06 I TELEPHONE CHRYSLER CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS INSTRUCTED TO GO BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. I AM VERY CONCERNED WITH MY SAFETY, AS WELL AS MY FAMILY'S, AND AM GETTING THE RUN AROUND WITH NO ANSWERS. I RELY ON THE EXPERTS AT DEALERSHIP AND DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THEY CAN ACKNOWLEDGE THERE ARE TROUBLE CODES AND NOT BE ABLE TO ADVISE IF THE VEHICLE IS SAFE. PLEASE HELP! I SHOULD ALSO NOTE THAT EVENTHOUGH THE VEHICLE IS A 1996, THERE ARE ONLY 18,396 ORIGINAL MILES ON IT. *NM

ON JULY 11, 2005 I DROVE FROM MY HOME IN BOLIVIA, NC TO DUNN, NC (APPROX. 125 MI) TO PICK UP MY GRANDSON & A FRIEND. WHILE PARKED IN THE PARKING LOT OF THE CRACKERBARRELL RESTAURANT AT THE INTERSECTION OF RT 421 & I95, I STARTED THE ENGINE AND LEANED OUT THE WINDOW TO SAY GOODBYE TO MY DAUGHTER. SUDDENLY BOTH FRONT AIRBAGS EXPLODED FILLING THE CAR WITH SMOKE AND FUMES. ALL THREE OF US IMMEDIATELY EXITED THE AUTOMOBILE. I SUFFERED A SEVERE BRUSED AND CUT RIGHT ARM AND BRUSING TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY NECK & SHOULDER AND A TWISTED RIGHT KNEE. I WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL IN DUNN BY THE PARAMEDICS & RELEASED. THE CHILDREN WERE NOT INJURED. HAD THE INCIDENT OCCURRED FIVE MINUTES LATER, WE WOULD HAVE BEEN TRAVELLING SOUTH ON #421, A 2 LANE HWY USED MOSTLY BY 18 WHEELERS AND OTHER LARGE TRUCKS. NO DOUBT I WOULD NOT BE HERE WRITING THIS REPORT. I CAN'T IMAGINE BEING ABLE TO RETAIN CONTROL OF THE CAR IF THE AIRBAG HAD EXPLODED IN MY FACE WHILE TRAVELLING AT 55 MPH. THE AIRBAG ON THE PASSENGER SIDE EXPLODED WITH SUCH FORCE THAT IT BROKE THE WINDSHIELD. THE AIRBAG ON THE DIRVERS SIDE COMPLETELY BROKE OFF THE CRUISE CONTROL MECHANISM ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE STEERING COLUMN. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED WITH THE DUNN POLICE DEPARTMENT (CASE # OCA 2005 01833). THE CAR WAS LEFT IN THE PARKING LOT UNDISTURBED UNTIL WEDNESDAY THE 13TH, WHEN IT WAS TOWED TO MARTIN'S AUTO BODY SHOP ON BEACH ROAD IN SOUTHPORT, NC. IT REMAINS THERE UNDISTURBED. ON JULY 15TH A MR JAMES WILLIAMS, SENT BY CHRYSLER, INSPECTED THE CAR. (FILE # 13779399). ON JULY 19TH STATE FARM SENT AN INSPECTOR. (CLAIM # 330713425, TEAM #44). I AM AWAITING NEWS FROM CHRYSLER AS TO WHAT ACTION THEY WILL TAKE TO REPLACE, REPAIR OR OTHERWISE COMPENSATE ME FOR THE LOSS OF THIS VEHICLE AND TRAUMA TO ME AND THE CHILDREN.

DT:CONSUMER STARTED VEHICLE WHILE IN CARPORT. HE PUT THE CAR REVERSE MOVED ABOUT 1 FOOT AND THE DASH BLEW UP. CONSUMER SAID IT WAS SO LOUD THAT NEIGHBORS HEARD IT FROM INSIDE THEIR HOUSES AND CAME RUNNING OUT. BOTH AIR BAGS DEPLOYED AND THE CONSUMER SAID THAT SMOKE BELLOWED OUT OF THE STEERING COLUMN. PARTS OF THE CAR WERE BLOWN ALL OVER THE INTERIOR. CONSUMER SAYS INCIDENT WAS LIKE A BOMB GOING OFF. CONSUMER THOUGHT THAT HE HAD BEEN CAR BOMBED. CONSUMER SAID THAT THERE WAS NO PHYSICAL CONTACT TO VEHICLE TO CAUSE AIR BAGS TO DEPLOY. CONSUMER SAYS THERE ARE OTHER WITNESSES AVAILABLE. SEVERAL MINUTES LATER, THE VEHICLE RESTARTED. THE DEALER REPLACED THE CAM SHAFT SENSOR AND THE BATTERY. THE VEHICLE FAILED AN EMISSIONS TEST DUE TO SMOG. THE DEALER REPROGRAMMED THE PCM. ON FEBRUARY 21, 2008, THE VEHICLE HAD A SECOND EMISSIONS TEST AND FAILED AGAIN DUE TO SMOG. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 167,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 204,083.

THE PASSENGER SEAT BELT ON MY 96 SEBRING HAS LOCKED UP AND CAN NO LONGER BE PULLED OUT OF THE SEAT AT ALL. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND ASKED ABOUT A RECALL, BUT WAS TOLD IT WOULD BE "AT LEAST TWO HOURS LABOR, NOT COUNTING PARTS AND WOULD BE OVER $200 TO FIX). TO ME, THIS IS CLEARLY A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT AND A SAFETY ISSUE. I NORMALLY DRIVE ALONE, SO THE BELT GOT MINIMAL USE BEFORE BECOMING DEFECTIVE. DT: THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 CHRYSLER SEBRING COUPLE LX. THE THROTTLE CONTROL IS STICKING. IF COMING TO A STOP THE VEHICLE WILL CONTINUE ON AT A FULL THROTTLE. THE CONTACT CONTACTED CHRYSLER ABOUT RECALLS, AND THEY SAID THERE WERE NO RECALLS. THE MAIN COMPUTER HAD TO BE REPLACED, BUT THAT REPLACEMENT WAS NOT RELATED TO THIS PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A REPAIR SHOP, AND THEY TOLD THE CONTACT THAT THERE WERE FALSE SIGNALS FROM THE IDLE AIR CONTROL SOLENOID TO THE MAIN COMPUTER, CAUSING THE THROTTLE CONTROL TO STICK. TIE ROD FELL OFF. STARTED ENGINE, PROCEEDED TO PULL OUT OF PARKING PLACE AND THE TIE ROD FELL OFF. SINCE CHRYSLER NOW MAKES TIE RODS SO THAT THEY CANNOT BE LUBRICATED, THEY DRY UP AND THE END JUST DROPS OFF. I AM FORTUNATE THAT I WAS NOT DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY 50 MILES AN HOUR WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO FOREWARNING OF A PROBLEM UNTIL IT HAPPENS. MY MECHANIC ALSO NOTICED THAT CHRYSLER HAS INSTALLED A HEAT SHIELD BETWEEN THE TIE RODS AND BRAKES. I HAVE SAVED THE PARTS AND I HAVE NOTIFIED CHRYSLER OF THIS SITUATION. I HAVE 78,000 MILES ON MY CAR. WHEEL LUGS: STUDS ARE OF DEFECTIVE MATERIAL. IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS, THERE HAVE BEEN 6 FAILURES WHERE THE LUGS HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE LUGS AND NUTS SIEZE AND CANNOT BE REMOVED AND REPLACED WITHOUT AN AIR WRENCH. THESE REPLACEMENTS ARE DOCUMENTED. THE "MERCHANTS TIRE" DEALER SAYS IT IS WIDESPREAD AMONG CHRYSLERS. I HAD PUT IT BACK AND FORTH FORM NURTAL & REVERSE AND WHEN THE CAR WAS SLOW ENOUGH I PUT IT IN PARK AND TURNED THE KEY OFF. I CAME CLOSE TO USING A WALL, OR A HOUSE UNDER CONSTRUCTION FOR A WAY TO STOP. I WAS EXTREAMY SCARRED AND LUCKY THAT NO ONE WAS HURT AND AT THE TIME, NO ONE HAD BEEN GOING THROUGH THE INTERSECTION. NHTSA HAS BEEN KEPT APPRISED OF MY LACK OF PROGRESS THUS FAR WITH THE DEALER AND CHRYSLER CUSTOMER SERVICE IN MICHIGAN VIA COPIES OF MY LETTERS TO THEM. MAROONE HAD ATTEMPTED TO INSTALL THIS RECALL 5 TIMES BUT STILL BEING UNSUCCESSFUL HAVE NOW JUST BLAMED THE PROBLEM ON ME AND OTHER DRIVERS. AS FAR AS I KNOW, THEY ARE "THROUGH WITH IT.". THIS COULD RESULT IN FAILURE TO SEE HAZARDS IN TIME TO CIRCUMVENT. (3) NOTIFIED DAIMLER CHRYSLER OF THIS CONDITION AND IT'S SAFETY IMPACT. THIS CONDITION SHOULD NOT OCCUR ON A MAJOR PIECE OF EQUIPMENT SUCH AS THE HEADLAMPS. THEIR RESPONSE WAS BASICALLY THAT THEY HAVE NO LIABILITY OR RESPONSIBILITY TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. THEY INFORMED ME THAT I SHOULD REPLACE THE HEADLAMPS AT MY EXPENSE. THE CURRENT COST FOR A SINGLE HEADLAMP IS $335.00 EA. I HAVE THE EMAIL CORRESPONDANCES THAT WE HAVE SENT TO EACH OTHER IF YOU NEED THEM. AS OF NOW THIS VEHICLE IS NOT USED FOR NIGHT TIME OPERATION. CABLE CONNECTING GAS PEDAL TO ENGINE FRAYED AND STUCK AT FULL THROTTLE. BRAKES DID NOT WORK. WAS TRAVELING IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC AT FULL SPEED TWO TIMES. I WOVE IN AND OUT OF TRAFFIC UNTIL I GOT TO AN OFF RAMP, AND LUCKILY WAS ABLE TO GET THROUGH THE TRAFFIC LIGHT AT THE INTERSECTION AT THE OFF RAMP AND ONTO A SIDESTREET WHERE I PUT IT INTO NEUTRAL AND LANDED IT LIKE AN AIRPLANE ON A LANDING STRIP WITH THE BRAKES SMOKING AND THE ENGINE SCREAMING AND THE CAR GLIDED TO A STOP. IN AUGUST OF 1998 I BEGAN TO DETECT A CREAKING NOISE WHEN I TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL (EVEN AT A FULL STOP). I BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR AND THEY DETERMINED THAT THE LOWER RIGHT BALL JOINT HAD LOST IT'S LUBRICATION. THE SERVICE MANAGER INDICATED THAT SINCE THERE WASN'T A GREASE FITTING ON THE BALL JOINT IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE REPAIR COULD NOT BE DONE THAT DAY AND AN APPOINTMENT WAS MADE FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER. I ASKED THE SERVICE MANAGER IF THE CAR WAS SAFE TO DRIVE, AND HE REPLIED YES. THE NEXT DAY , WHILE MAKING A RIGHT HAND TURN ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET (5 - 10 MPH) THE CAR COLLAPSED ONTO THE RIGHT TIRE. WHEN I LOOKED AT THE DAMAGE I SAW THE THE TIRE ALMOST FLAT ON THE GROUND, THE DRIVESHAFT WAS OUT OF THE TRANSMISSION, THE CV JOINT WAS PULLED FROM THE TRANSMISSION AND THE BALL JOINT WAS CUT IN HALF. THERE WAS ALSO DAMAGE TO THE FENDER OF THE CAR. SALERNO CHRYSLER INSPECTED THE LEFT BALL JOINT AND SAID IT WAS FINE. THE CAR WAS REPAIRED AND A LITTLE OVER TWO MONTHS LATER THE LEFT SIDE BEGAN TO MAKE THE SAME NOISE. I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND THEY TOLD ME THEY COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE NOISE. THE CAR WAS MAKING NOISE THE NEXT DAY, AND I DECIDED TO BRING THE CAR SOMEWHERE ELSE. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO ANOTHER CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP SERVICE CENTER AND THEY FOUND THE THE LEFT LOWER BALL JOINT WAS FAILING DUE TO LACK OF LUBRICATION. I HAVE THAT PART IN MY POSSESION AND WOULD GLADLY SEND IT TO YOU. MY CONCERN IS THAT I HAVE SPENT A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF MONEY ON REPAIRS DUE TO THESE LOWER BALL JOINT FAILURES AND THEY SEEM TO BE MANUFACTURER'S PROBLEMS, NOT MY DRIVING HABITS. I was driving my car & listening to music. All of a sudden my passenger side dash speaker started smoking, then was shooting fire. I had a Bubbler drink & splashed it across the dash onto the speaker. It was scary, as I thought my engine might blow up. I took it to the shop, but they were so busy, it sat for a week, & I finally said forget it(I would have been too costly) & I needed my vehicle to get to work. Many things failed after that; gas gauge; speedometer needle; right turn signal; & radio.Other things but just can’t remember at the moment.

ON THE ENGINE I HAD THE PULLEY ON THE TIMING BELT COME APART AND JUST LAST MONTH I HAD THE HEAD GASKET START TO LEAK FROM THE BACK. TIMING BELT 28,000 HEAD GASKET 37,500. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE ALL 4 TIRES THAT WHERE ON THE CAR. ALL BY 29,000 MILES--SOME EARLIER AND THEN LATER. THE BRAKES WERE REPLACES AT THE SAME TIME AS THE TIMING BELT PULLEY. I KNEW THEY NEEDED REPLACEMENT AND HAD AN APPOINTMENT TO GET THEM REPLACED WHEN THE TIMEING BELT WENT OUT. IT IS A 1996 BUT I ONLY HAVE 37,500 MILES.

I HAVE HAD SO MANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR. THE CAR LOOKS VERY NICE ON THE OUTSIDE BUT HAS MANY ISSUES ON THE INSIDE. THIS CAR HAS COST ME A FORTUNE SINCE MY WARRANTY WENT OUT AT 75,000 MILES. I HAVE REPLACED BRAKES, ROTORS, AND DRUMS ALMOST EVERY YEAR. THIS IS VERY COSTLY (OVER $350 EVERY TIME). MY TRANSMISSION FAILED ON ME TWICE, ONCE UNDER WARRANTY AND THE OTHER WITHOUT A WARRANTY. I SPENT OVER $1,000 FOR REPAIRS TO REPLACE A GASKET, O-RING, AND TRANSMISSION PUMP. MY O2 SENSOR FAILED TWICE. WHEN I TRY TO ADJUST MY MIRRORS WITH THE BUTTON ON THE DRIVER SIDE, THE MIRRORS WON'T RESPOND AT ALL. I CONSTANTLY HEAR A KNOCKING NOISE FROM THE ENGINE. THE SERVICE ADVISORS AT THE DEALERSHIP CONTINUE TO TELL ME THAT CHRYSLER CARS SOUNDS LIKE THAT. THAT'S NORMAL. ALL THE TINGS I HAVE SHARED WITH YOU ARE JUST SOME OF THE THINGS I HAVE EXPERIECED. 1. STRUCTURE/FRAME/BODY -- WATER GETS INTO THE CAR AND COLLECTS UNDER THE BACK SEAT CUSHION AND ON THE FLOOR. IT HAS BEEN REPORTED TO THE DEALER AND ATTEMPTS TO FIX HAVE BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL. THE WATER GETS IN AT NUMEROUS LOCATIONS AND HAS BEEN OBSERVED RUNNING OVER ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS AND SWITCHES. THERE IS ALSO A CONCERN ABOUT EVENTUAL CORROSION AND RUST DAMAGE THAT COULD COMPROMISE THE INTEGRITY OF THE SEATBELT BOLTS BECAUSE OF THE WATER. THIS PROBLEM WAS DETECTED ABOUT NINE MONTHS AGO -- BUT THERE IS NO DETERMINATION AS TO HOW LONG BEFORE THAT PERIOD IT HAD BEEN OCCURRING. 2. BRAKES/SHOES (PADS)/ROTORS -- THE FRONT BRAKE PADS HAVE HAD TO BE REPLACED EVERY 6,000 - 12,000 MILES SINCE ABOUT 17,000 MILES ON THE CAR. IT CURRENTLY HAS ABOUT 58,000 MILES ON IT. THE RECOMMENDED CHRYSLER MOPAR PADS SEPARATE AND FAIL. THEY HAVE LITERALLY FALLEN OFF OF THE METAL HOLDER THAT IS A PART OF THE BRAKE PAD, DAMAGING THE ROTORS AS WELL. THERE IS NO WARNING THAT THE PAD IS ABOUT TO FALL OFF OR HAS BEEN SEPARATING. LUCKILY, THE LAST TIME IT HAPPENED I WAS COMING TO A STOP LIGHT AND WAS ABLE TO CONTROL THE STOP AND, DUE TO THE METAL ON METAL SOUND WHEN I WAS BRAKING, PULLED OVER IMMEDIATELY AND TELEPHONED FOR HELP. THIS IS NOT ONLY A RISK WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE, BUT A POTENTIAL RISK BECAUSE I COULD BE STRANDED IN UNFAVORABLE LOCATIONS AND CIRCUMSTANCES, WITHOUT ACCESS TO TELEPHONE FOR HELP. 3. DOING HWY SPEED (60-65MPH) WHEN VEHICLE SUDDENLY DIED OUT. LET VEHICLE SIT FOR A WHILE & WOULD BE ABLE TO RESTART. TOOK TO DEALER & COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. *AK DEALER AT FIRST DEALER STATED THAT THE FUEL PRESSURE WAS LOW POSSIBLY DUE TO A FAULTY FUEL PUMP, HOWEVER LATER DEALER STATED THAT DIRT AND WATER IN GAS CAUSED PROBLEM, ANOTHER DEALER STATED THAT IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO BE ABLE TO EVEN DRIVE 200 MILES ON A CONTAMINATED TANK OF GAS, HOWEVER CURRENT DEALER INSISTED THIS WAS THE PROBLEM AND THAT CONSUMER WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR REPAIRS, DEALER REMOVED FUEL TANK, INSTALLED NEW FUEL PUMP, REPLACED FUEL FILTER, AND REINSTALLED NEW TANK. *SLC
