How to read a Chrysler Sebring VIN — every digit explained

Every Chrysler Sebring carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Sebring.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your Sebring VIN

The affected control arms, d10945 and d10946, are stamped with the following dates on the ball joints: 134308, 135708, 100109, 102709, 104109, 105509, 107609, 108909, 110309, 113209, and 116609. The g10945 and g10946 are the same part as the d10945 and d10946 respectively. They are labeled differently depending on the aftermarket customer.

Risk. Separation of the ball stud from the socket of the ball joint housing would allow the control arm to collapse and the wheel to fold in causing loss of steering control, possibly resulting in a crash.

Fix. Qualis automotive will replace the ball joints free of charge. The safety recall began on november 9, 2009. Owners may contact qualis automotive at 1-800-493-4128.

1997 Chrysler Sebring recalls 11

Power Train:automatic Transmission:park/neutral Start Interlock Switch98V183000

What's wrong. Vehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. The adjustment of the cable connecting the console shifter mechanism to the ignition key can cause a trapped key condition which can result in a low force required to depress the shift button. A combination of applying a mis-adjusted release button with a low force attempt to shift out of park with the key in the locked position, can break the connecting pin in the shifter.

Risk. If this happens, the "ignition-park" interlock system will be nonfunctional.

Fix. Dealers will inspect for proper operation of the system. Any vehicles that are not functional after the inspection will have the shift mechanism and cable replaced with a "self-adjusting" design.

Seats:front Assembly:head Restraint97V081002

What's wrong. The headrest guide bracket was improperly welded to the seat back frame on the passenger side seat back assemblies only.

Risk. The headrest support bracket can break, increasing the risk of personal injury.

Fix. Dealers will replace the passenger seat back assembly with a new assembly.

Structure:body:roof And Pillars99I004000

What's wrong. This is not a safety recall in accordance with the safety act. However, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. If the convertible top cover is not installed correctly, it can separate unexpectedly from the vehicle while driving.

Risk. If the cover separates while driving, it could distract the driver increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix. Owners will receive an improved convertible top cover instruction label and installation instructions.

Suspension:front:control Arm:lower Ball Joint97V201000

What's wrong. Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The lower control arm ball joint can separate due to loss of lubrication.

Risk. Separation of the ball joint could cause a loss of steering control increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Fix. Dealers will inspect the ball joint end housing cover seal for leakage with a high pressure air tester and the rubber boot will be visually inspected for damage. If the cover seal leaks or the boot is damaged, the lower control arm will be replaced.

Suspension:front:control Arm:lower Ball Joint00V421002

What's wrong. Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. If the rubber boots on the lower lateral arm ball joints of the front suspension were damaged during assembly, dirt and water can intrude. Also, mmc has added the potential of leaking moisture, which can cause the ball stud to corrode.

Risk. This condition could cause the lower lateral arm ball joint to separate, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. This campaign supercedes mmc's previous safety recall campaign, see 99v-066.

Fix. Dealers will inspect the lower lateral arm ball joint for wear. Ball joints that exhibit wear beyond the established tolerance will be replaced with newly designed lateral arm ball joints. Ball joints that are within the established tolerance will be cleaned and a special sealant will be applied to prevent intrusion of moisture.

Vehicle Speed Control02V186000

What's wrong. On certain passenger vehicles equipped with 2.5l v6 engines, the throttle control cable can fray causing the throttle to bind or stick.

Risk. This could potentially result in a loss of throttle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

On september 30, 2010, i purchased a 2008 chrysler sebring from a dealership in plymouth, wi. The car had 19,204 miles on it. The car also had bridgestone turanza tires. I took my car into tires plus for an oil change at 22,700 miles on the dash. I was told by the technician that i needed new tires, because my tires had 3/32 of tread on them. On january 28, 2011, there was a recall on the car so gandrud installed a auto trans shift lever interlock spring.they also checked tire pressure and set tire pressure. A about a month later, i started having trouble with getting my key out of the ignition switch. Having to wiggle the steering column to get it out. I took the car back to gandrud to have them check it and they told me nothing was wrong with it. On may 11, 2011, i took my car in for another oil change and tire rotation. Gandrud told me i had 4/32 tread on the tires at 30,026 miles. On june 24, 2011, i took it back to gandrud for another oil change at 33,572 miles on the dash and was told i had 4/32 of tire tread left on the tires. It was not two months later, i moved to milwaukee, wi. On august 18, 2011, amato hyundai was running a special for $12.00 an oil change. I went got an oil change and the technician there told me i needed to get new tires for the car. He stated at this time i had less than 2/32 of tread on my tire. I got a quote from the service guy, decided i can beat that price.set-up an appointment with tires plus for four tires an alignment. Unfortunately, i did not make it to get my new tires on the car. On september 03, 2011, i was involved in a car accident on the freeway. I was traveling in far left lane, maneuvering to the middle lane when my steering wheel and my tires were no longer functioning together. I almost lost my life that day, but god so fit for me to live to tell about it. It was the most shocking day of my life. I thank god i am here to make a complaint. These dealerships can't continue to scam us this way. It's not worth our life. *tr

Whitish/grayish smoke was billowing out of front end of car. Patrons driving alerted us & we exited vehicle. As we vacated vehicle we realized purse was still in vehicle, we ran to retrieve it & as we retrieved belongings, fire engulfed front end of vehicle & shot through front of vehicle & engulfed the entire front portion of vehicle & inside of vehicle. Power steering fluid dripped on engine which ignited the fire. As fire firefighters extinguished the first fire & as the first fire died down the vehicle erupted in flames once again which was ignited by fuel. Power steering fluid and battery acid causing the flames to shoot through the front end of the car (inside) to the back of the vehicle towards fuel tank. The vehicle was a potential fire ball. I had a severe side impact on my 2008 chrysler sebring when another vehicle ran a stop sign and broadsided me. I have side airbags, the curtain airbags and the ones in the seat. Not one airbag deployed. Chrysler is saying the impact was not sufficient to deploy the bags. I don't accept that. Shortly after midnight on 19 december 2002, my step-son, age 35, and i were driving south bound on i-35 near perry, ok in my 2002 dodge durango. I was driving and my son was sitting in the passenger seat, sleeping. He was wearing his seat belt. I changed lanes to pass another vehicle (this is a southbound interstate) and was traveling at 70 mph with the cruise control engaged. As i approached the vehicle in the right lane which i was passing, it suddenly swerved into my lane (left, passing lane). Her bumper came in contact with the passenger side of my vehicle on the front quarter panel near the wheel well. (she said later that she felt a slight bump which she didn't relate to another car at that moment). As her car swerved into my lane, i attempted to swerve to the left to avoid her. At the moment that i pulled the steering wheel left, her rear bumper made the contact with my durgango listed above. My airbag immediately deployed, stopping me from braking or controlling the steering. My vehicle then went across the median grass (east bound) towards the northbound traffic. I could not see anything due to the airbag, nor could i steer due to the airbag ,nor could i brake due to the airbag. As the airbag began to deflate my the right side of my durango slammed into a northbound semi trailer truck, spun and rolled once, landing on the side of the road in an upright position. My 35 year old step- son died of head injuries. This airbag should never have deployed. There was no damage to the front end of the vehicle (the grill and engine are still intact, as is the hood), even after the collision with the semi trailer truck and the roll over. My daughter in law has filed suit against me and against chrysler. That does not bring my son back. Chrysler needs to be made accountable to all owners who have this airbag. This airbag should never have deployed. Chrysler needs to recall any of their vehicles which have this unsafe, unpredictable airbag. *ak

Tried to stop approx. 1 month ago and first applied barkes, went to floor. I released them and applied them a second time and they stopped me but to avoid a rearend accident, i veered my car to the shoulder. I contacted the service department of tupelo auto sales they asked me where the car was. I told them that it only failed the one time so i was just cautious as i drove on into work. They told me that it would be hard to find until it messed up more often so they could see the problem. I had no more problems until dec. 5th on my way home from work..i started hearing a clanking sound that sounded like i was having a flat tire so i pulled over to check. The tires appeared to be fine. I was only a mile or so from home so i drove on home. Once home, i inspected the underside of the car and the wheels but could not see anything different. The following morning, when i left home, the car seemed ok. Once i arrived at my first stop sign which is at the bottom of a hill, i applied my brakes and again they went to the floor. The second time i applied them, they caught and i stopped. I turned onto the highway and travelled about 150 feet and the front (seeming) locked up similar to the way it does when you place a car in park and cut off the key. I was headed to the right onto the soft shoulder of the road and was fighting the car because i was headed for the ditch and an electrical generator on the side of the road. The steering or brakes (?) broke loose, sending me into an oncoming pickup, the pickup hit the front of my car, then the truck hit a van which was following me. My airbags did not deploy, my steering locked and my brakes failed, all within 1 1/2 miles of my house. Chrysler has sent an investigator to look at the car today, but even he said that it would be difficult to find a problem that only happens periodically. Observing him prior to the accident in the vehicle i made the observation that he didn't appear to fit this car well, he is six foot three inches tall, top of windshield is about mid forehead in height on him, at time of incident air bag did deploy, still severe head injury to forehead on left side, observation of injury and location leads me to question that had he been under six foot in height air bag would have afforded more protection from impact of windshield, or if height of windshield was higher impact might have been different, car was determined a loss. I am concerned that consumer height, above average could possibly predispose one to more serious or fatal injury due to height of windshield relevant to area of impact. *jb

I had no issue out of that tire or ball joint before and i am needing to know what i need to do to start my investigation... Me and my son are happy no one was injured too bad. *tr

2000 chrysler sebring headliner caught on fire melting fabric. *** no answer required*** *** transferred to ovsc*** *ts when the consumer went to strike a match, it broke when the consumer motioned upward. The head of the match was fizzling and flew upward, it struck the headlined and fell down on the consumers pants. The consumer brushed the head of the match and was able to smothered it with his shoe, he opened the door, bent over and threw it out the window. The consumer looked back and realized the headliner was burning and that the fabric was melting. The consumer was able to put the fire out but in the process he burned 2 of his fingers. The consumer believes there is a defect in the material and that materials in vehicle should be more flame resistant and not support combustion. The moment the match head hit the material it reversed and was immediately being pulled away by gravity. The consumer stated material should not be able to ignite and blaze up from such an incidental contact. *jb *nm

Takata recall. During the course of a year since i've purchased this car, i have experienced issues with what i believe to be power steering. Twice while coming to a stop (stop sign or light), my steering would lock along with my brakes. When i took it to a shop i was told my thermostat needed replaced. I told them to fix the issue. On april 17th while driving home from work a little after midnight this same issue occurred only while i was still driving. I was able to force my wheel to turn enough to drive up the bend i was driving around rather than the school in front of me. Finally i hit a pole and my car has been ruled as a total loss. I have many concerns in regards to what actually happened and why.

I own a 2008 chrysler sebring convertible. During the process of lowering the retractable top,i reached into the trunk while standing next to the car to free an object (cardboard box)that i feared would encumber the operation or damage the top. The mechanism pinned my arm and i wedged my shoulder into the underside of the trunk lid to impede the travel of the lid so i could extricate my arm from the scissoring action of the top. Once i had my arm free, the mechanism had me pinned facedown while it continued to close. I braced myself against the force in anticipation of activating some sort of safety stop/reversal mechanism. I would estimate the downward force to be in excess of several hundred pounds per square inch since one of the guide pins created a 2 cm impression in my back about 2 inches from my spine. The top did finally stop and i was able to pry myself free. My concern is that had circumstances been slightly different, i could have been killed, paralyzed or had my right arm amputated above the elbow. A child, slight framed, or elderly person probably would have been crushed or killed. This mechanism exerts an extraordinary amount of pressure and will only stop when it encounters an object that it cannot cut or crush. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 chrysler sebring. While driving 45 mph, the contact attempted to decelerate and applied the brakes but the vehicle did not respond. The failure caused the steering wheel to seize and the contact was unable to maneuver the vehicle, crashing into the median strip. The vehicle was destroyed and the air bags did not deploy. The contact and a passenger were injured as a result. A police report was filed. The manufacturer was contacted and the contact was awaiting a response. The failure mileage was 59,000.

Vehicle was purchased used with 18,455 miles on it. After vehicle was purchased we noticed a grinding noise with the brakes. We took the vehicle into the dealership and had the rotors replaced because they were warped. The vehicle continued to have the grinding sound, we brought the vehicle back to the dealership and again work was done on the brakes. We did not have opportunity to drive it much after as our daughter got into a car accident with this vehicle on oct 13, 2005, she was pulling out of the elementary school parking lot (no more than 5-10 mph) to go across the road to enter the high school and another vehicle hit her front corner passenger side (other vehicle was going approx 40-45 mph). The real issue is that both front airbags did not deploy until several minutes after the accident occurred...that is what caused the majority of the injuries to my children. *jb

Now, even if the car is repaired, i am afraid that i will have the same problem again. I had no blemish on my driving record. *ak

Traveling on the interstate two cars got into a fender bender another crashed into them and i was traveling behind the third vehicle when i applied the brakes and sent into a skid. My car slid a good distance until it crashed right into the back of the third vehicle which was a volvo in which their air bags deployed. My sebring did not stop nor did the air bags deploy. I was traveling around 30-40 mph when the impact happen. Will not have confirmation until tomorrow but it appears that the car will not be salvageable. It is my understanding that anti-lock brakes should prevent a skid on a dry surface on a clear day. *tr

Dt: the abs brakes failed on the vehicle. She purchased the vehicle used with 19,000 miles on it. After she purchased the vehicle she noticed a grinding noise with the brakes. She took the vehicle into the dealership and had the rotors replaced because they were warped. The vehicle continued to have the grinding sound, but because they would not supply her with a loaner vehicle she did not take it in. On may 31, 2005, she was going around 40-45 miles per hour and she tried to apply the brakes when the abs failed. She skid 75 feet on dry pavement. There was a police report taken and a ticket was issued, but she is fighting the ticket because it was due to the brakes failing. None of the airbags deployed. This caused the consumer to hit her head and she has post concussion syndrome with possible seizures and is out of work. She also had bruised ribs and a neck and shoulder injury, all on the left side. The doctor has put her on complete disability and she can not even drive a vehicle at this time. She is currently on seizure medication. The vehicle is in new jersey, she was coming home from memorial day weekend in atlantic city. The damage is all on the drivers side front. The vehicle is considered totaled. *ak

Loose brakes, transmission slips, accident and airbags did not deploy it takes a long distance to stop. Brakes are not abs. 9/11 truck pulled out in front of me, stomped on brake, wheels did not lock, car did not stop rolling and i hit the vehicle. Transmission always slips, especially at 30 mph. I have been in two frontal hits and airbags did not deploy. Dealer has been told about the problem numerous times. *la
