MAKE : DODGE MODEL : GRAND CARAVAN YEAR : 1991 MANUFACTURER : CHRYSLER CORPORATION NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER : 96V099000 MFG'S REPORT DATE : APR 19, 1996 COMPONENT: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK POTENTIAL NUMBER OF UNITS AFFECTED : 321000 SUMMARY: THE ABS HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT CAN EXPERIENCE EXCESSIVE BRAKE ACTUATOR PISTON SEAL WEAR CAUSING PUMP-MOTOR DETERIORATION. CONSEQUENCE: IF THIS CONDITION OCCURS, THE ABS FUNCTION COULD BE LOST AND REDUCED POWER ASSIST WOULD BE EXPERIENCED DURING VEHICLE BRAKING INCREASING THE POTENTIAL FOR A VEHICLE ACCIDENT. REMEDY: DEALERS WILL TEST THE VEHICLE'S ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM AND REPAIR THE VEHICLES IF NECESSARY. (EXCEPT FOR THE BRAKE ACTUATOR PISTON ASSEMBLY AND THE PUMP-MOTOR ASSEMBLY WHICH WILL HAVE A LIFETIME COVERAGE). THE THING I FIND HERE IS THE TERM REGARDING PISTON ASSEMBLY WHEN I TOOK MY VAN IN DUE TO FAILURE ONLY THE PISTON ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED IT SHOULD BE REVISED TO INCLUDE THE WHOLE UNIT BECAUSE A ACCUMULATOR MADE OF CAST IRON THAT IS CONNECTED TO THE UNIT IS NEVER REPLACED RUST KEEPS ENTERING THE UNIT FROM THIS ACCUMULATOR BEING IT IS MADE OF A RUSTING METAL AND JUST KEEPS MAKING THE UNIT FAIL THIS IS MY SECOND REPAIR IN 2YRS AND THE RUST IS NOW GETTING INTO THE LINES CAUSING THE REAR WHEELS TO LOCK IN WET WEATHER ALL THE PARTS STORES THAT EVEN CARRY THE UNIT WHICH IS FEW SELL IT AS A COMPLETE UNIT NOT IN PIECES SUCH AS WITH OTHER MASTER CLY. 'S WITHOUT ABS I FIND CAST IRON A POOR CHOICE FOR A AIR TANK OF A AIR PUMP WHICH BY NATURE INJECTS AIR INTO THE METAL CAST IRON TANK STAINLESS STEEL WOULD BEEN A BETTER CHOICE IF IT WOULD MEET THE TANK PRESSURES. I AM SEEKING REPLACEMENT OF THE ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM SINCE IT IS NOW A TOTAL LOSS DUE TO THE RUST AND PREFER NON ABS IF THAT'S ABLE . *NM

DT: THE CONTACT STATED THE FUNCTION PRESSURE SWITCH IN THE ABS SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE DID NOT HAVE ANY BRAKING CAPABILITY. THE SERVICE DEALER CLAIMED ABS BRAKES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE SERVICE DEALER ATTEMPTED TO THE REPAIR THE PROBLEM, BUT DID NOT SUCCEED. THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE ABS PISTON PUMP AND MOTOR ASSEMBLY. TRANSMISSION BEHAVES ERRATICALLY. FIRST SYMPTOMS WERE REVVING AND FAILURE TO GO INTO GEAR IN COOL (BELOW 60) OR RAINY WEATHER. THREE TRIPS TO THE DODGE SERVICE CENTER AND SEVERAL PHONE CALLS TO DAIMLER-CHRYSLER HAVE DONE NO GOOD! ON MY WAY TO WORK THE TRANSMISSION STUCK IN 3RD GEAR AND WOULD NOT DECELERATE. I HAD TO VEER INTO AN EMPTY LOT AT @ 40 MPH TO AVOID A COLLISION WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. MY THREE SMALL CHILDREN WERE IN THE VAN WITH ME. I HAD TO FORCE VAN INTO NEUTRAL AND TURN OFF THE ENGINE AS IT WOULD NOT DECELERATE. I HAVE SEEN MANY ISSUES OF THIS TYPE POSTED ON NHTSA AS WELL AS OTHER SITES. ONLY A FEW CRASHES AND INJURIES AND JUST ONE FATALITY. THESE VEHICLES ARE PRIMARILY "FAMILY HAULERS" USED BY CONSUMERS WITH CHILDREN. THE SHOCK ABSORBERS ARE ATTACHED TO A THREADED FITTING IN THE FRAME OF THE CAR. THE THREADING IS APPARENTLY NO LONGER TIGHT ENOUGH TO SECURE THE SCHOCK ABSORBER IN USE. SEVERAL TIMES, ON BOTH SIDES OF THE CAR, AND FOR SEVERAL YEARS, THE SHOCKS HAVE SEPARATED FROM THE CAR BODY FITTINGS, LEAVING THE SHOCK ATTACHED AT ONLY ONE END, AND SWINGING FREELY. TO MY KNOWLEDGE, MOST SHOCKS FIT THROUGH A MOUNTING AND ARE SECURED IN PLACE WITH A NUT. THAT IS NOT THE CASE HERE - I HAVE NO WAY OF SECURING THE SHOCK, AND IT HAS DETACHED UNEXPECTEDLY, REPEATEDLY. FORTUNATELY, NO ACCIDENTS HAVE RESULTED.

IN BOTH CASES, THE BACK SECTION OF THE DRIVER SEAT COLLAPSED BACKWARD. IN THE INITIAL CASE, IT FELL BACK ON MY DAUGHTER'S LEGS WITH MINIMAL INJURY. I REPLACED THE SEAT AND ALL WAS WELL UNTIL THE START OF THIS YEAR WHEN THE BACK AGAIN IS BREAKING. I CONTACTED DAIMLER CHRYSLER AND WAS TOLD IN BOTH CASES THAT THEY HAD NEVER HAD HEARD OF THIS HAPPENING BEFORE. I HAVE SINCE READ OF OTHER CASES OF A SIMILAR PROBLEM WHICH SEEMS TO BE A CONTINUING SAFETY PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO ANTI LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM RECALL AND SEEKS REIMBURSEMENT FOR REPAIRS. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED HE PAID FOR THE REPAIRS ON APRIL 20, 2006 AND WAS CHARGED $376.73, EVEN THOUGH A RECALL HAD BEEN ISSUED. THE CONSUMER EXPERIENCED ABS PROBLEMS AGAIN IN DECEMBER 2013. THE CONSUMER STATED THE RECALL LETTER STATED IF THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN, CHRYSLER WOULD COVER ANY REPAIRS. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER, HE HAD TO PAY $112 FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST, TO SEE IF THE PROBLEM WOULD BE COVERED, UNDER THE RECALL. THE DEALER THEN INFORMED THE CONSUMER, THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE EQUIPMENT TO TEST HIS VEHICLE, DUE TO THE AGE. WE KNOW IT IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE BUT MY FRIENDS WHO HAVE OLDER CARS DON'T HAVE THEIR PAINT COMING OFF ON THEIR ROOF OR HOOD. CONSUMER WAS GOING ABOUT 30 MPH AND NOTICED GAS GAUGE HAD DROPPED. CONSUMER STARTED SMELLING GAS INSIDE OF VEHICLE. CONSUMER PULLED OVER, GOT OUT, AND DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING. THEN, GOT BACK IN. WHEN CONSUMER AND CHILDREN GOT BACK INTO VEHICLE, FLAMES AND SMOKE WERE COMING OUT FROM UNDER HOOD. THEY GOT OUT, RAN ACROSS THE STREET, AND FIRE DEPARTMENT PUT OUT THE FLAMES. VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. INSURANCE COMPANY RULED THAT THE IT WAS A RUPTURED FUEL LINE THAT SPRAYED FLUID ONTO MANIFOLD, AND THAT MADE IT IGNITE. CONSUMER WILL CONTACT MANUFACTURER TO FILE A COMPLAINT. *AK
