How to read a Dodge Caravan VIN — every digit explained
Every Dodge Caravan carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Caravan.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Caravan VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Air Bags:frontal:sensor/control Module-inactive
What's wrong. Certain minivans are being recalled that were originally sold in or currently registered in the 27 states plus the district of columbia that use greater amounts of salt for winter road deicing. The up-front (uf) air bag sensors that contain brass bushings installed in these vehicles may corrode and crack allowing water to enter the sensor. These sensors provide enhanced air bag performance in certain types of frontal crashes.
Risk. In one of these crashes, with one or both of the vehicle's uf sensors inoperative, the occupants will not benefit from the enhanced air bag protection that these sensors would provide.
Fix. For vehicles registered in the recall states, dealers will replace the original uf air bag sensors with ones with greater corrosion resistance. Vehicles registered in other states will obtain a lifetime free replacement of any uf sensor that fails. The campaign began on july 2, 2007. Owners may contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

1997 Dodge Caravan recalls 15
Service Brakes, Hydraulic:foundation Components:master Cylinder
What's wrong. The master cylinder rear seal, between the hydraulic fluid and the vacuum reservoir, may not seal adequately allowing hydraulic fluid to be drawn into the power assist vacuum reservoir.
Risk. As the hydraulic fluid in the master cylinder reservoir decreases, the level sensor will detect the loss of fluid and illuminate the instrument panel brake warning lamp. Continued operation of the vehicle with the warning lamp illuminated can result in extended stopping distances.
Fix. Dealers will replace the brake master cylinder on all affected vehicles. Addendum (4-14-97): vehicles inspected per chrysler recall no. 707 and found to be outside the listed suspect master cylinder date code range, must now have the master cylinder primary piston replaced (chrysler recall no. 714).
Seat Belts:integrated Child Seat
What's wrong. Vehicle description: multipurpose passenger vehicles equipped with integral child seats. This is not a safety recall in accordance with federal regulation 573. However, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. On the integral child seat, the shoulder belts restraining the child retract and lock in place after the belt buckle is connected to the latch plate. The latch plate movement locks the belts to make sure the child is restrained in the case of a vehicle crash.
Risk. The latch plate located in the seat cushion area must be free to move back against its stop after the buckle is removed to allow the shoulder belts to be pulled out. Always be sure the area around the latch plate is free of food or other items that might prevent the latch plate from moving back.
Fix. Owners are being provided with a video tape and 2 harness clips. The video tape instructs owners on the proper use and maintenance of the child seats.
Wheels:rim
What's wrong. The steel road wheels were damaged by the equipment used to match mount the wheel to the tire.
Risk. A score mark was made on the wheel, affecting the durability of the wheel.
Fix. Dealers will replace all road wheels (and full size spare tires) with new wheels.
Tires:bead
What's wrong. Vehicle description: passenger minivans equipped with p215/65r15 goodyear conquest tires mounted on steel wheel. The tires can experience a sudden air pressure loss without warning.
Risk. Sudden tire failure could result in a loss of driver control of the vehicle.
Fix. Dealers will replace the tires that were mounted on steel wheels.
Child Seat
What's wrong. Vehicle description: mini vans equipped with integrated child seats. The shoulder harness restraint on the integrated child seat can become difficult to extract when the safety belt latch plate becomes contaminated.
Risk. This can cause difficulty in releasing a child from the restraint.
Fix. Dealers will clean the latch mechanism. An extender will be added to the emergency release anchor for the child seat safety belts so that the release clips are more visible and accessible to the operator in the event that the retractor mechanism can not be unlocked. In addition, an instructional owner's manual supplement card will be provided.
Equipment
What's wrong. Aftermarket replacement fuel filters manufactured between september 17, 2002, and january 20, 2003, sold under the brand names listed above. The filter may experience malfunction of the quick connector either blocking fuel flow to the engine or causing a fuel leak. This does not involve any products manufactured by the daimlerchrysler corp. Nor any dailmerchrysler dealers.
Risk. If this condition occurred while the vehicle is in motion, the engine could stall. Also, in the presence of an ignition source, the fuel leak could result in a vehicle fire.
Fix. Aftermarket replacement fuel filters for 1995-2000 short wheelbase chrysler town & country, plymouth voyager and dodge caravan minivans part no. 18232 and date code 0237, 0249, or 0252. Replacement fuel filters for 1995-2000 long wheelbase chrysler town & country, plymouth voyager and dodge caravan minivans part no. 18230 and date code 0237, 0249, 0251, or 0304. Replacement fuel filters for 2001-2004 chrysler town & country, plymouth voyager and dodge caravan minivans part no. 28871 and date code 0249. These part numbers and date codes appear on the gold-tone filter. Distributors and retailers will be notified to isolate and return affected inventory. Owners who have had the fuel filter serviced on one of the applicable vehicles after september 17, 2002 should return their vehicle to the service facility to be inspected to see if the fuel filter that was installed is one that is involved in the recall. If so, the owners should have the filter replaced. To receive a full refund plus the cost of postage, owners should cut the connectors from the hoses, rinse the connectors and return them together with proof of the amount paid for the replacement part and labor, to intercontinental at intercontinental auto parts, inc., p.o. Risk. In the event of a vehicle accident, the child seat may not provide adequate protection to the occupant.
Fix. Dealers will replace the integrated child seat module bolts.
Child Seat
What's wrong. Vehicle description: mini vans equipped with integrated child seats. The shoulder harness restraint on the integrated child seat can become difficult to extract when the safety belt latch plate becomes contaminated.
Risk. This can cause difficulty in releasing a child from the restraint.

Risk. If this condition occurs, the abs function could be lost and reduced power assist would be experienced during vehicle braking increasing the potential for a vehicle accident.
Fix. Dealers will test the vehicle's anti-lock brake system and repair the vehicles if necessary. Also the warranty on all abs components will be extended to 10 years or 100,000 miles (except for the brake actuator piston assembly and the pump-motor assembly which will have a lifetime coverage). Owners will also be reimbursed for previous abs component repair costs.
Latches/locks/linkages:hatchback/liftgate:lock
What's wrong. Vehicle description: light duty passenger minivans with remote release. This is not a safety recall. There has been no determination that a safety defect exists with the minivan latches. Chrysler is conducting a service campaign to replace the liftgate latch assembly of the affected minivans. In a collision, the rear liftgate latch assembly could open.
Risk. If the liftgate latch opens, occupants can be ejected resulting in significantly increased risk of injury or death.
Fix. Chrysler dealers will replace the liftgate latch with a new stronger latch assembly without charge. Chrysler began notifying owners of these vehicles in march 1996.
Seat Belts:front:buckle Assembly
What's wrong. Vehicle description: passenger mini-vans. Covers on the solid stalk mounted seat belt buckles can become dislodged causing the release button to stick inside the cover. The buckle would then be only partially latched.
Risk. In the event of a vehicle crash, the occupant may not be properly restrained increasing the risk of personal injury.
Fix. Dealers will install a cover retaining clip to the stalk mounted buckle cover to prevent dislocation of the buckle cover.
Seat Belts:front:anchorage
What's wrong. Vehicle description: passenger mini-vans. The center rear seat, right outboard side, safety belt anchor hook can become unattached from the body anchor position.
Risk. In the event of a vehicle crash, the occupant may not be properly restrained increasing the risk of personal injury.
Fix. Dealers will replace the anchor hook retaining clip with a revised profile clip and a cover plate.
Exterior Lighting:turn Signal:flasher Unit
What's wrong. Incorrect turn signal flasher inhibits indication of signal lamp outage.
Risk. Inoperative turn signal lamps would not inform driverthat a lamp was out, or warn other drivers of intent to turn, creating a riskof accident; vehicle does not comply with fmvss 108.
Fix. Replace turn signal flasher with proper flasher.
Structure:body:hatchback/liftgate:hinge And Attachments
What's wrong. Vehicle description: mini vans. The bolts used to attach the strut to the body and the rear liftgate can accumulate fatigue damage if three factors combine. If the bolt is loose, the gas strut is over-pressurized, and the frequency of opening and closing cycles is higher than for the average customer, the bolt can fail.
Risk. Personal injury could occur if the bolts break allowing the liftgate to fall suddenly.
Fix. Dealers will inspect for loose fasteners, if the fasteners are loose, the strut (and integral bolts) will be replaced. If the bolt shows evidence of torque, the bolt will be removed, larger washers will replace the existing washer and the bolt will be reinstalled and hand tightened to the target torqued.

Fix. Chrysler dealers will replace the liftgate latch with a stronger latch assembly without charge. Chrysler began notifying owners during october 1995.
Engine And Engine Cooling:engine
What's wrong. The engine valve cover gasket may dislocate and allow an engine oil leak at the gasket.
Risk. The leakage of oil in the engine compartment could causea fire.
Fix. Replace gasket cover with revised cover, and rtv sealant will be applied in place of a gasket.

Service Brakes, Hydraulic:foundation Components:differential Proportional Valve
What's wrong. Incorrect screws may have been used in installing the load sensing brake proportioning valve to its bracket causing the clamping load to be less than intended.
Risk. This could result in inconsistent front to rear brakebalance with potential for rear brake skid under heavy braking conditions.
Fix. Replace proportioning valve to bracket screws with proper length screws.
Seat Belts:front:buckle Assembly
What's wrong. Inboard front seat belt buckle assembly straps can suffer fatigue failure of the strap near its anchor position.
Risk. Fatigue failure of safety belts in a sudden stop oraccident condition results in increased likelihood of injury to seat occupant.
Fix. Replace fatigued straps or retrofit straps with a reinforcement plate and removal of an antirotation tab to prevent fatigue failure.

What's wrong. Federal mogul is recalling 6,903 aftermarket ball joint assemblies shipped between november 9, 2007 and march 26, 2008, which may have been packaged with incorrect nuts. The part numbers packaged with incorrect nuts are: k7147, k7329, k8683, and 104353. These parts were made for use on the various vehicles listed above.
Risk. The nuts included in the packaging for these ball joint assemblies are missing the intended prevailing torque (self-locking) feature. If the incorrect nut was to become loose, the joining members may loosen leading to a separation of the ball joint. This may result in loss of vehicle control, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash.
Fix. Federal mogul will notify owners and replace the parts free of charge. The recall began on may 22, 2008. Owners can contact federal mogul at 877-489-6659.

Consumer was driving down a flat highway and the steering locked up, applied the abs brakes and the brakes wouldn't move, resulting in an accident/injuries, also excessive gas consumption.*ak
Brakes failed causing two separate accidents.
I lost control of the van trying to stop instead of hitting the truck i hit the steering wheel froze the brakes locked and the gas pedal sped up dodge said its not there fault please check it out and see if the van was to blame also the seat belts did not work because i hit the window before the airbags deployed please help. *ak
Abs, brake failure, ea94-028 active, vehicle involved frontal collision impact 12:00, speed 40 mph, air bag did not deployed, experience extended stopping. Tt
Dt: consumer's wife was driving with her 2 little girls. Stopped at a red light brakes failed and steering locked up. Went off the road into a parking lot and hit tree. The vehicle was towed and the mechanic said there were no brakes in the van. *ak van. Updated 3/20/2006 - *nm
While turning into a parking space i touched break and the van accelerated to full throttle. The van jumped the curb and was heading toward 3 people, i turned the steering wheel enough to hit a light pole instead of them. The van quit racing for a few seconds and then revved up again. The light pole fell and i was again headed toward the people. I put both feet on the break and was able to stop the van, but not before hitting the people. Luckily they were just bruised because i just bumped them and didn't run over them. This all happened in a matter of seconds. I almost killed some people and no longer have transportation because the van was totaled.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge caravan. While driving at 40 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and failed to respond. As a result, the contact crashed into the rear of another vehicle and the air bags failed to deploy. The contact sustained shoulder, wrist, and foot injuries that did not require medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 83,300.
During inclimate weather applied brake pedal went to the floor. Rear seat passenger recieved broken fingers. Tt
While driving on freeway at 65mph, when applying brakes, rear wheels locked, van went out of control, flipped three times, the pavement was damp, no rain, resulted in three injuries, the dealer where vehicle was purchased was contacted, but had gone out of business. *ak
I was slowing down toward a traffic light and about 35-mph the abs light came on. The car brakes went almost to the floor could not stop. Consequently i could not avoid a collision. The dealer said that the air bag did not open because the vehicle impact was inches just above the left side of the bumper, to my surprise. I thought i was buying a safe vehicle for my family. Since the vehicle was new the light came on one time or another, the deler could not find the problem but it was there and nothing was fix. *ak

Was traveling home from work, rush hour traffic heavy but moving close to posted speed limit (65 mph). Traffic slowed in front of me and i also slowed, then traffic came to a sudden stop, so i also increased pressure on the brakes. While doing so, the pedal went right to the floor, i lost brake pressure and started moving to the left to avoid a collision but was not able to. My van hit the car in front of me. I had time and space to stop and not collide if the brakes would not have failed, but when i lost brakes, the distance between my van and the car in front of me closed too quickly for me to avoid the collision. The van was damaged on the front right (passenger) side, but when i got the van back home off of the tow truck, i saw brake fluid on my driveway from the driver's side of the van. A few days later i got the van on jackstands to locate the fluid leak and found the problem to be terribly corroded brake lines running along the driver's side of the vehicle in the area of the driver's door. There is some flexible steel braided line and where it joins the rigid line, there is a so much corrosion that the line is literally rusting away. Searching on the internet i have found this is a very common problem with chrysler minivans from 1997 to 2000. I feel it is a manufacturing problem. I am 55 years old and have worked on cars all of my adult life and have never seen brake lines corrode like this. As there are many vans like mine on the road, i wonder how many other vans have brake lines that are in similar condition as the ones on this van? It was simply a matter of time before these lines would fail. Now when i drive in traffic and see a chrysler product van i ask myself "does that driver know anything about the brake line problem?" i think people need to be informed! There are so many potential accidents just waiting to happen! Chrysler needs to do something! *tr

My wife loaded the kids in the van. My son removed his seatbelt. My wife got out of the driver set to put him back in his seat, and my daughter reached over and accidently put the van in gear. Dodge said they do not have to install a device to prevent the transmission from going in to gear with out depressing the brake first (other manufactures d0). Does this go under standard 102? *ak

I notified the first incident to the dealer about its speed sensor, over the phone, which blew away just after the two weeks of buying this car from his showroom. Last month, the break went bad and were not covered under the warranty, i had to end up replacing the rotor and complete brake set, paying around $300 from my pocket, from a midas in pennsylvania. The third incident was most dangerous, and don't know how i saved the life of my two little kids including the one with 11months infant baby, the automatic transmission blew away while driving normally and lost control on the downhill, in the city of norristown, since its break and the entire system went off due to the failure of automatic transmission and i eventually took a great risk of pulling the car all be myself on the sidewalk and somehow protected each of my family members. This car is proven to be very unsafe and does not worth the life of my kids and my family. I sincerely request to help me have my money back at the earliest. The dealer is very rude and rough over the phone and does not let me speak at all. It took me several years to save this money to buy this car but the dealer has really deceived me by giving a faulty car. It seems to me that this car did not undergo for any kind of safety inspection as long as it was sitting in his showroom and i am very afraid of driving now. *tr

I had purchased a 2002 dodge caravan se and immediately after it was back in the shop for repairs. I heard a noise in the window and the dodge place told me it was nothing not to worry about it. Also i have made several trips to the dodge place for the brakes (replaced 6 times ) , sliding door doesn't stay latched and always slides and hits my children while getting in or out of the vehicle, the drivers side seat belt comes undone for no reason (it wont stay latched), i had a flat and the tire jack broke while jacking up the van, i was stopped at a red light and all of a sudden my van just proceeded to go and i no control other than running in a ditch to stop, the van always drifts to the right when driving and dealer said it not faulty that's how its made to do, i had 7 sets of tires and the dealership said they couldn't find anything wrong with this vehicle , i had an alignment done 4 times because of the drifting and tires wearing out so often, i have had the ball bearings replaced 2 times, i had the ac recharged with freon 2 times it just wouldn't keep cool, the back defroster sometimes doesn't defrost making it impossible to see while driving, bad smell coming from van it smells like a skunk and it makes it hard to breathe. *nm

I have a 2006 dodge caravan; it too shut down on me while going down the hwy at 70mph and all three of my children were in the van. Thank the lord that no one was hurt. This was the first time that my van had ever done this but was not the last; this van had shut down on me a couple more times. I took the van to a local shop, but never found out anything. I was told that it could be the heat of the south texas weather, but i thought cars were made to withstand all weather. Then it started having electrical issues; like the light would go on and off in the middle of the night, really at any time with no keys in it, the wipers would come on when i didn't need them to or would not come on in the rain were i needed it the most, the dome light would come on while driving home at night, or while taking my kids to school the dome light would come on and not go off. I no longer can drive the van, because it started fire christmas morning while my husband was driving, we were getting ready to go out of town. I have looked on line and it seems that this has happened to others were the van shuts down while driving or the driver smelt or seen smoke coming from under the dash near the fuse box. There was one that the guy called triple a after his car shut down on the interstate and started smoking under the dash. There is about 3-4 dz listing were their van had what they called kindred spirits light, radio, door locks you name it going on & off. A 2006 caravan like mine in fort lewis, wa totally shut down while driving & rear ended another car. There is a website that has steps to trouble shoot the electrical system in a dodge caravan, three are check your ground connection & two of those is if you loose power while driving.
I was driving my car when all of a sudden it started to chock like it was getting no gas i decided to turn around to go home because i live in a rural area with no cell service when i stopped to turn around a man that was behind me came running over to get me out of the car because he said it was on fire under the back drivers side i didn't even know it was on fire if is was not for him i could have been severely injured or even died the car burned up and exploded with in two minutes of me getting out. The car was fine when i started it that morning and the day before i drove it about 100 miles with no problems. I don't know how this can be a cat should just not go on fire like that. The car had to be junked because there was nothing left of it. I contacted dodge and they said there was nothing they could do for me because the car was totaled. I had no fire on this car because of its age so now i am out a car that was in very good condition and i could have had it for many more years. Dodge will not even look into this matter i hope that this doesn't happen to someone else because they might not be as lucky as me to get out uninjured. Can you please look into this for me i am very upset with this and am worried that someone is going to get hurt something is not right with this car and now i have no car and can't afford to buy one now and i live 14 from the nearest store. *tr

Heading off to the mall one evening, i dropped off my wife and my son, keeping my other son and his friend with me. As i pulled away, i heard a loud pop and smelled and saw smoke. When i got out of the car, i could see melting plastic and what appeared to be small fire balls dropping to the ground under the hood. I turned the engine off and got the kids out of the car . Called 911 and by the time they got there flames were 10-15 feet in the air. There was a re-call on this car about a steering hose i believe that i had done. Other than that i have never had any other problems with this car. It was only 2 years old and had only 17,000 miles on it. The car has been totaled.*jb

I have taken my 2000 dodge durango to forest lake dodge dealer for a clunking noise in my front end over year ago. I had a number of complaints. They said at that time there was nothing wrong. They couldn't hear anything. Again within a couple months i returned with the same problem along with my passenger window not going up or down correctly. Once again they said oh you need shocks and you need your service of warrenty proformed or your warrently wont be any good, so i said yes do what is under warrenty nothing else unless i say it ok, will more work was proformed and i ended up paying hundred plus dollars out of pocket. Again they said there was no clucking noise noted and that the passenger window according to the computer said it functions correctly. Will to this day over a year later, the cluck is there and shocks and other maintence was completed, the passenger window moves so slow that we dont use it as it has and still does quit working. Inside where the 4 wheel drive compotent also comes loose from the main floor. I was told that i would have to purchase a new manto which screws to the frame of the durango. I had side steps put on after purchase by chry. Dodge in forrest lake and drivers side within in one and half years fell loose and they said i just needed to have someone put in new screws that it wasn;t covered. Yet when i purchased them they said that if they did it, anything that may happen would be covered but if someone else did it they wouldnt cover anything that happened.*ak
In fueling our van, on two different occasions, we have had a fire. The fire comes from the filler pipe on the van! The van was totally turned off. It does extinguish itself after awhile. We are experiencing shock constantly when we touch the van. We have had it to the dealer about the shocking problem, but not the fire. We assumed it was with our personal gas tank. Contacted the gas co. And they investigated and corrected what could have been a problem. No other vehicals that are filled at this tank have experienced this difficulty. My son and i were involved the first time there was a fire. He was burnt slightly. The second time, only myself. We are concluding now, that the difficulty is within the van. We are contacting a dealer in the am but would you please assist. Not only was the filler pipe on the van on fire, the hose from the stationary tank and the ground was on fire. Our machinery shop and equipment could have been lost, not to mention lives! Needless to say - we are scared! The fire dept. Was called both times! Please help!!! *ak

9/8/2008 i was traveling on ir80 & i must of swerved a bit & the van struck a dot paddle marker @ humboldt mile marker 45 in nevada. The van became engulfed in flames & overturned sideways at least 4 times. My mother & father parrished as a result of this accident, burned so much they couldn't recognize their gender. My wife & i escaped with her getting severely burned about 76% & i about 68%, we was transported to humboltd hospital then air transported to u of u burn center salt lake city utah where she spent about 7 months in ccu burn unit & i about 3 months. The marker post was uprooted & struck the undercarriage of the van & detached the fuel line then punctured the cross member & depositing the fuel line in the hole the fire started then we overturned with a series of explosions. A mechanic explained the severed fuel line was a return line from the evap.canister to the fuel tank & that the fuel system stayed at 49 psi being fed by an electric fuel pump i remember driving speaking with my father, my wife & mom was sleeping in the back seat then i woke up on fire trying to escape the wreckage, i hollered @ my wife & i rolled out of the van. While turning into a parking space i touched break and the van accelerated to full throttle. The van jumped the curb and was heading toward 3 people, i turned the steering wheel enough to hit a light pole instead of them. The van quit racing for a few seconds and then revved up again. Luckily they were just bruised because i just bumped them and didn't run over them. This all happened in a matter of seconds. I almost killed some people and no longer have transportation because the van was totaled.

This is a follow up on nad-40,req. 18445:cag. I received a report from quali-tech, inc. (materials analysis laboratory) regarding the testing of my steering wheel that snapped at the 12:00 o'clock position while i was pushing on brake and pulling wheel toward me before impact. The report states "the steering wheel fractured at a location where the aluminum core contains a high amount of porosity and dendritic segregation. The center sixty percent of the cross-section exhibited the porosity. The presence of the porosity and dendritic segregation would highly reduce the strength of the center aluminum section and cause failure to occur at reduced impact loads as compared to a section of the steering wheel which does not contain these material defects." my question is how do i get the x-rays of this steering wheel during its manufactring and how many other defective steering wheels are out there?*ak
While driving van on interstate 95 in connecticut, i fell asleep for a few seconds and drifted onto the shoulder and then hit 9 chainlink fence posts in a row. While this was happing i woke and braced my self for impact by pushing on the brake and pulling on the steering wheel toward me. Before impacting the steering wheel snapped at the 12: o'clock position and i bent the two separated toward me like two blunt spears. On impact (the van rode up on steel guide wires and was slammed to a stop by the first steel pole hooking the front axle) the four inches of slack on the seat belt allowed the blunt spear to crash into my chest causing serious injuries. Six days in hospital with broken sternum, broken ribs, bleeding, collapsed right lung. I don't know how the steering wheel broke being 52 years old, 190 lbs and not very strong. I am having the wheel analysed by a professional to see if the metal core was flawed or the core was not thick enough. How can i get the specs for this inner core to compare to the findings? If the wheel had not broke, i would have no injuries.*ak
