THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DEALER REPAIRED THE FAILURE PREVIOUSLY BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 32,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 40,000.

I OWN A 1993 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN.. I DISCOVERED A FACTORY RECALL THROUGH ODI PERTAINING TO THE SPECIFIC NAMED VEHICLE CONCERNING SERVICE BRAKES,HYDRAULIC : ANTILOCK BRAKES THAT SPECIFY SUMMARY. CONSEQUENCE .REMEDY AND NOTES; STATING THAT IF THERE ARE ANY EXISTING PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKE ACTUATOR PISTON ASSEMBLY AND THE PUMP MOTOR ASSEMBLY THAT THERE EXISTS A LIFETIME COVERAGE TO THE OWNER OF SAID VEHICLE. IN SHORT . CHRYSLER -DODGE AND OR ANY LOCAL VEHICLE DEALERSHIPS REPRESENTING SAID MANUFACTURER WILL NOT HONOR THIS RECALL. WHAT IS THE SOLUTION NOW ? DOES THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION HAVE THE SOLUTION TO ENFORCING THE MANUFACTURER AND /OR A LOCAL DEALERSHIP REPRESENTING SAID MANUFACTURER TO REPAIR A FACTORY DEFECT. THREE YEARS LATER, THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE ABS SYSTEM WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 74,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 109,000.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1993 DODGE CARAVAN. WHEN THE CONTACT STARTED THE IGNITION, THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE INDICATOR REMAINED LIT UNTIL THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED EXTREME DIFFICULTY COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP AND THE STOPPING DISTANCE OF THE VEHICLE INCREASED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND THEY STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO THE ABS HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT. THROUGH RESEARCH, THE TECHNICIAN DISCOVERED NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 96V099000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTI-LOCK). THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED FOR ANOTHER DEFECT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONSIDERING INCLUDING THE RECENT FAILURE IN THE RECALL; HOWEVER, THE REPAIR WAS DENIED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE FREE RECALL REMEDY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 148,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 149,338.

MY 1993 DODGE CARAVAN HAS NOT BEEN CHANGING GEARS CORRECTLY FOR 1 1/2 YEARS. WHEN IT STARTED, I HAD IN TO THE DEALERSHIP 5 TIMES IN 8 WEEKS. THEY FOUND $800 IN THINGS TO REPAIR BUT NONE CORRECTED THE PROBLEM - CHANGING GEARS ROUGHLY, DROPPING SEVERAL GEARS WHEN COMING TO A STOP, ETC. THIS WILL HAPPEN FOR AWHILE AND THEN STOP FOR WEEKS OR MONTHS. THE DEALER AND ANOTHER GARAGE COULDN'T FIGURE IT OUT. FINALLY IT IS SHOWING IT NEEDS A NEW TRANSMISSION WHEN HOOKED UP TO THE DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE - BUT IT STILL DOESN'T ACT UP ALL THE TIME. READING ALL THESE PROBLEMS ON THE WEBSITE FOR SO MANY YEARS, WHY HASN'T DODGE BEEN HELD RESPONSIBLE TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM FOR CARAVAN OWNERS!!!!! *AK

ON THURSDAY, MARCH 24TH, 2005 MY MOTHER BACKED HER 1993 DODGE CARAVAN INTO HER DRIVEWAY AND BUMPED INTO HER FENCE BREAKING THE LENS ON THE TURN SIGNAL. AS IT WAS COMING INTO A LONG WEEKEND WITH BUSINESS SHUT DOWN, SHE IMMEDIATELY WENT INSIDE TO CONTACT HER MECHANIC TO HAVE IT REPLACED/REPAIRED. AS SHE SPOKE ON THE PHONE, SHE GLANCED OUT THE WINDOW AND OBSERVED A PLUME OF SMOKE RISING FROM THE REAR OF THE VAN. SHE IMMEDIATELY RUSHED OUT AND FOUND A SMALL FLAME IN THE AREA OF THE BROKEN LENS. SHE PACKED IT WITH SNOW AND WENT BACK TO HER CALL TO THE MECHANIC TO ARRANGE A TIME FOR THE REPAIR AND TO DISCUSS WHAT JUST HAPPENED. DURING THIS CONVERSATION SHE AGAIN NOTICED A PLUME (MUCH LARGER AND DARKER) RISING FROM THE VAN. SHE CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WHO RESPONDED QUICKLY, HOWEVER THE INTERIOR OF THE VAN WAS TOTALLY DESTROYED BY THE FIRE AND SUBSEQUENT INTENSE HEAT. HER INSURANCE AGENT HAS SINCE "WRITTEN THE VEHICLE OFF" AND IS OFFERING $1500.00 (CDN) TO SETTLE. FORTUNATELY SHE DID NOT SIMPLY ATTEMPT TO DRIVE STRAIGHT TO HER MECHANIC FOR THE REPAIRS OR THE CONSEQUENCES COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH MORE SEVERE.

ITEM #1, HEADLIGHT FAILURE. THE PLASTIC HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY (BOTH R AND L) HAS BECOME DEFECTIVE WITH AGE. THE PROBLEM BEGAN TO OCCUR THREE YEARS AGO AND PROGRESSIVELY HAS BECOME WORSE. THE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM IS A "FOGGING" OF THE CLEAR PLASTIC HEADLIGHT LENS MAKING IT DIFFUSE TO THE HEADLIGHT ILLUMINATION. VERY LITTLE DIRECT LIGHT IS AVAILABLE THROUGH THE "FOGGED" LENS TO ILLUMINATE THE ROADWAY AT NIGHT. THE VEHICLE HAS BECOME VERY HAZARDOUS FOR ME TO DRIVE AT NIGHT SINCE SO LITTLE OF THE ROADWAY IS VISIBLE. I OWN TWO DODGE CARAVANS, (1992 AND 1993), BOTH OF THESE VEHICLES SUFFER FROM THE SAME PROBLEM OF DEFECTIVE HEADLIGHT LENS ASSEMBLIES. PROBLEM # 2, DEFECTIVE ABS BRAKE SYSTEMS. MY TWO DODGE CARAVANS HAVE REPEATING PROBLEMS OCCURRING WITH THE ABS BREAKING SYSTEM. DEALER SERVICE OF THIS ITEM HAS RESULTED IN CONTINUING BRAKE FAILURES. COMPLETE LOSS OF BRAKES USUALLY OCCURS. THIS PATTERN OF BRAKE FAILURES IS CONSISTENT WITH BOTH OF MY DODGE CARAVANS, 1992 AND 1993 MODELS. RECOMMENDATIONS: I RECOMMEND THAT CHRYSLER CORP. ISSUE A RECALL OF THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLIES AND REPLACE THEM WITH A MATERIAL (GLASS PREFERABLY) THAT WILL NOT DETERIORATE WITH TIME. THE SIDE-LIGHTS THAT SEEM TO BE MADE FROM THE SAME MATERIAL ARE STILL CLEAR INDICATING THAT THE PROBLEM IS DAMAGE WITHIN THE HEADLIGHTS, PROBABLY DUE TO ULTRAVIOLET DAMAGE. I NOTICE THAT CARS DRIVING BESIDE ME AT NIGHT SEEM TO PRODUCE A BETTER LIGHTING OF THE ROAD AND THAT ONCOMING DRIVERS OFTEN FLASH THEIR HIGH BEAMS AS IF I HAD NOT DIMMED MY OWN. I PURCHASED TWO TIRES ON APRIL 12, 1996 AND TWO MORE ON FEBRUARY 1, 1997. ON 10/15/98 BECAUSE THE SIDEWALLS SEPARATED, I HAD TO REPLACE TWO TIRES. ON JUNE 6, 2001 WHILE TRAVELING OUT-OF-STATE, THE SIDEWALL SEPARATED ON ONE OF THE TIRES. BECAUSE I COULD NOT FIND A DEALER IN THAT AREA AND IT WOULD TAKE 3 DAYS TO ORDER, I HAD TO REPLACE ALL FOUR OF MY TIRES. TWO OF THE TIRES HAD 24,152 MILES AND THE OTHER TWO HAD 44,872. WHEN WE BECAME AWARE OF A PROBLEM WITHIN THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM ON THIS VAN WE TOOK THE VAN TO OUR MECHANIC RONNIE POE. HE INFORMED US THAT THIS WAS UNDER RECALL, WE THEN TOOK THE VAN TO MANASSAS DODGE ON JUNE 8, 1999, WHERE THEY SUPPOSEDLY FIXED THE PUMP COMPRESSOR ON THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM. ON JULY 29, 1999 THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM FAILED AGAIN. I HAD THE VAN TOWED TO MANASSAS DODGE IN MANASSAS VA BY HENRY'S TOWING. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVE AS WELL AS A CO-WORKER WITNESSED THAT THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM LIGHT WAS ON AND THE BRAKES WERE NOT WORKING. MANASSAS DODGE COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM. THEY SUGESTED THAT MY "ROTORS" HAD CAUSED THE PROBLEM. ONCE I RECEIVED THE VAN BACK FROM MANASSAS DODGE, MY HUSBAND INSPECTED THE ROTORS AND FOUND NO PROBLEM WITH THEM. AGAIN ON SEPTEMBER 18, 1999, WHILE MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM FAILED, THE BREAK PEDAL WAS HARD AND HAD NO PRESSURE IN THEM. ONCE AGAIN, THIS PROBLEM SEEMED TO HAVE CORRECTED ITSELF. I CONTACTED THE DAIMLER CHRYSLER RECALL CENTER ON MONDAY, 9/20/99 AND ADVISED THEM OF THE PROBLEM. THEY GAVE ME A FILE # OF 6251453 AND ADVISED ME THAT THE "WHEEL SPEED CIRCUIT" MAY BE WHAT IS CAUSING THIS TO HAPPEN. AT THIS POINT I AM VERY FRUSTRATED AND VERY CONCERNED WITH MY SAFETY IN DRIVING THIS VAN. YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN THE BRAKES ARE GOING TO GO OUT ON YOU. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO CHECKED THE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES. THE CODES WERE CLEARED AND THE DEALER PERFORMED A MODULATOR CIRCUIT TEST AND ADDITIONAL TESTING. IF THE RESISTANCE WAS BELOW 5 OHMS, THE CAB ABS MODULE, DUAL PRESSURE SWITCH, AND THE ACCUMULATOR MAY NEED TO BE RECHECKED OR THE PARTS MAY NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE IF THE MANUFACTURER WOULD BE ABLE TO SUPPLY THE PARTS TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER WOULD NOT RELEASE THE VEHICLE UNTIL IT GOT REPAIRED DUE TO THE FAILURES WITH THE BRAKE SYSTEM. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE WHEN THE VEHICLE WOULD BE REPAIRED. THIS IS A LOW MILEAGE, SPECIAL EQUIPMENT HANDI CAP VAN, WORTH ATLEAST 6K... THEY OFFER 1951. I IM MOSTLY UPSET BECAUSE UPON THE ORIGINAL RECALL, IT WAS NOT REPLACED, AND WAS LEFT ALONE WITH THE ORIGINAL DEFECTED PART. I THINK THAT IS FRAUD, AND AGAINST WHAT A RECALL IS ABOUT. I HAVE A 1993 DODGE CARAVAN. I HAVE SPENT OVER $10,000.00 ON REPAIRS SINCE I BOUGHT IT NEW IN 1993. I AM EXTREMELY DISSATISFIED WITH DODGE. FREON WAS LEAKING FROM AIR CONDITIONER. LEAK WAS COMING FROM UNDER DASHBOARD. TOOK VEHICLE TO MECHANIC, AND THEY HAD TO GO UNDER THE DASHBOARD, THEY FIXED THE LEAK. THIS VAN HAS HAD THE AIR CONDITIONER GO OUT AT LEAST 3 OF THE 6 YEARS THAT I HAVE OWNED IT. NOW, THE ABS COMPLETELY WENT OUT ALMOST CAUSING A CRASH WITH SEVERAL CHILDREN IN THE VAN; THE BRAKES ARE 90% GONE! THIS VAN HAS BEEN A LEMON AND IS IN NEED OF REPAIR EVERY YEAR.
