The contact owns a 1996 Dodge Caravan. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was a strong gasoline odor inside the vehicle. The contact stated that after parking the vehicle, he opened the hood and noticed a fuel leak on top of the engine. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact made a local dealer aware of the failure; however, the vehicle was not yet diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT FUEL WAS LEAKING FROM HIS TANK IN LARGE AMOUNTS. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND THEY ADVISED HIM THAT HE NEEDED TO REPLACE THE TANK AND THE FUEL PUMP. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 DODGE CARAVAN. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 30 MPH WHEN HE WAS ADVISED BY ANOTHER MOTORIST THAT FUEL WAS LEAKING FROM THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK. THE CONTACT HAD JUST REFUELED THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC AND THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED TO REPLACE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. THE MECHANIC ALSO STATED THAT THERE WAS EVIDENCE OF A SMALL FIRE FROM THE FUEL TANK. THE MECHANIC REFERRED THE CONTACT TO THE DEALER TO INQUIRE ABOUT A POTENTIAL RECALL ON THE VEHICLE (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 99V216000, FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE: DELIVERY FUEL PUMP). THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL BUT THE DEALER REFUSED REPAIRS BECAUSE OF THE DAMAGES FROM THE SMALL FIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. I WANT TO GET YOUR ADVICE ABOUT MY CARAVAN. EVEN THOUGH I REPLACED THERMOSTAT SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, I EXPERIENCED SAME PROBLEM RECENTLY THAT I HAVE BEEN SUFFERING FOR A LONG TIME. CARAVAN LOSES POWER WHILE RUNNING, I MEAN THAT ENGINE IS RUNNING BUT VERY UNSTABLE AND GOING TO STOP IF DEEPLY PRESS GAS PEDAL. ONCE I LOSE POWER, IT IS DIFFICULT TO DRIVE BECAUSE OF INSUFFICIENT POWER. BUT IF I WAIT UNTIL ENGINE COOL DOWN (TYPICALLY AN HOUR OR SO), IT RECOVERS TO NORMAL CONDITION. EVEN THOUGH I CHECKED IT AT THE CHRYSLER DEALER, THEY DO NOT KNOW EXACTLY WHAT WOULD BE THE REASON. ONLY WHAT THEY CAN DO IS BASED ON THE COMPUTER DIAGNOSIS FROM MULTIPLE MISFIRE. WHEN IT WAS CHECKED SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, THEY SAID THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG IN THE FUEL PUMP AND REPLACED THERMOSTAT. BUT SOME PEOPLE, WHO WORK AT A GARAGE, TOLD ME THAT THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE FUEL PUMP IS NOT NORMAL. THE FUEL PUMP PROBLEM MAY NOT BE MONITORED BY COMPUTER DIAGNOSIS. THIS PROBLEM PERSISTS EVEN THOUGH I REPLACED A LOT OF PARTS; SPARK PLUG CABLE, (NOT SPARK PLUG BECAUSE IT IS LESS THAN 20000 MILE AFTER REPLACED), ROTOR, ROTOR CAP, FUEL FILTER AND AIR FILTER. IF THESE PARTS ARE REPLACED AND THERE IS STILL SAME PROBLEM, WE NEED TO SUSPECT FUEL PUMP. HE TOLD ME TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE SOUND THAT CAN BE HEARD WHEN WE PUT THE KEY TO THE IGNITION POSITION WHEN STARTING ENGINE. IT IS POSSIBLE TO HEAR FUEL PUMPING SOUND FOR ABOUT ONE SECOND EVEN THOUGH THE ENGINE IS NOT RUNNING IF TURN THE KEY TO IGNITION POSITION. AND HE TOLD ME TO PAY ATTENTION TO THIS SOUND AGAIN WHEN MY CAR LOSES THE POWER. IF THIS SOUND IS NOT HEARD, HE SAID THAT IT IS DEFINITELY DUE TO THE FUEL PUMP DEFECT WHEN THE POWER IS NOT SUFFICIENT AND NEED TO REPLACE FUEL PUMP. DO YOU AGREE WITH HIS SUGGESTION. UNTIL HIS ASSUMPTION IS PROVED, IT MAY BE A WASTE OF MONEY IF SIMPLY REPLACE FUEL PUMP WHICH IS QUITE EXPENSIVE.

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE WOULD ONLY GO INTO REVERSE ON TWO OCCASIONS. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED IT WORKED PROPERLY. AFTER THE SECOND INCIDENT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY DETERMINED THE CODES NEEDED TO BE RESET. THE VEHICLE PERFORMED PROPERLY FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME AND THEN IT STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS AGAIN. HOWEVER, THIS TIME THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT GO INTO DRIVE UNTIL THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT BEEN ALERTED.

I ASKED FOR THE NAME AND NUMBER OF THE ZONE MANAGER AND WAS TOLD I COULD ONLY GET THAT FROM THE DEALER. TOM ADDIS DODGE REFUSE TO IDENTIFY THE ZONE MANAGER OR GIVE ME HIS NUMBER. I WAS THEN INFORMED THE ZONE MANAGER DOES NOT TALK TO CUSTOMERS, AND UNLESS I COULD PRODUCE RECIEPTS FOR ROUTINE MAINTANCE FROM THE PREVIOUS OWNERS (WHO I CANNOT IDENTIFY) THERE WAS NO DISCUSSION, EVEB IF I HAD THAT PROOF I WAS TOLD DUE TO THE MILEAGE THERE WOULD BE NO ASSISTANCE. AS A PRECAUTION TO OTHER DRIVERS.MY 1996 DODGE CARAVAN 125000 MILES,UPON LEAVING A PARKING LOT AFTER A HIGHWAY SPEED AND CITY SPEED TRIP THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE FORWARD.A POLICE OFFICER WAVED ME TO STOP.UPON INSPECTION OF THE PASSENGER FRONT TIRE WE FOUND THE OUTER TIE ROD JOINT BROKE SEPERATING AT THE BALL SOCKET CAUSING THE WHEEL TO NOT MOVE WITH THE STEERING.BY THE GRACE OF GOD IT DID NOT HAPPEN ON THE WAY WITH MY FAMILY ABOARD.WE WERE ABLE THE CHANGE THE TIE OUTER TIE ROD SO WE COULD RETURN HOME.THE OTHER DRIVER SIDE OUTER TIE ROD WAS REPLACED THE NEXT DAY AS A PRECAUTION.IS THERE A RECALL ABOUT THESE TIE RODS? CONSUMER COMPLAINED ABOUT ONGOING ABS BRAKE PROBLEM. ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND WOULD EITHER GO OFF WITHIN SECONDS OR STAY ON ALL DAY. THIS CAUSED BRAKE FAILURE ON SEPARATE OCCASIONS. MAY 7, 2005, I WAS IN AN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT. THE OTHER CAR WAS A 2004 HONDA ACCORD. THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE ACCORD HIT THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE OF MY 1996 DODGE CARAVAN JUST IN FRONT OF THE DRIVER'S SEAT. THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG INFLATED, THE DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG DID NOT. THROUGH THE COURSE OF HAVING THIS CAR, THE "AIRBAG" LIGHT WAS AN ISSUE ALMOST FROM DAY ONE. WHEN I WOULD TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, BILL KAY CHRYSLER IN NAPERVILLE, THEY WOULD CHECK IT AND FIND NOTHING WRONG. FINALLY I WAS TOLD TO IGNORE THE "AIRBAG" LIGHT THAT THERE WAS A FAULTY SENSOR THAT COULD NOT BE FIXED.

IN 2003 BCM REPLACED FOR MY WINDSHIELD WIPERS WOULD NOT OPERATE. OVER $600 . LAST YEAR MY BATTERY CABLES AND BATTERY WERE SMOKING AND I WAS LUCKY I GOT TO THE DEALER JUST IN TIME AS BLACK SMOKE WAS GUSHING OUT FROM UNDER MY HOOD.... ANOTHER $600 REPAIR. IN JANUARY 2006 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM CRAZINESS. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON AND IT COULD NOT BE SMOGED. THEY REPROGRAMMED THE MODULE AND I WAS ABLE TO GET IT SMOGED 2 DAYS LATER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CAR WOULD TURN OVER AND DIE ....I RETURNED AND WAS TOLD I NEEDED A PCM MODULE REPLACED $719. GETTING THE CAR BACK WAS ONE ELECTRICAL MISHAP AFTER ANOTHER....THE GAUGES WENT CRAZY...TAKEN BACK TO DEALER....REPROGRAMMED ....AND THEN TOLD THEY WERE NOT SURE HOW TO FIX IT...THEN GOT THE CAR BACK AND THE CLOCK AND RADIO INTERMITTENTLY WENT ON AND OFF.. THE COMPUTER SHUTTING DOWN AND NOT ALLOWING THE REMOTE TO OPEN THE LOCKS USING THE KEY THE ALARM WOULD GO OFF AND I COULD NOT SHUT IT OFF UNTIL THE COMPUTER CAME BACK ON AND I COULD USE THE REMOTE....I WAS THEN TOLD BY THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT I NEEDED A BODY CONTROL MODULE(BCM) WHICH I REPLACED IN 2003. HE WAS NASTY AND RUDE. I TOLD THE GENERAL MANAGER I REALLY DID NOT BELIEVE THEY KNEW WHAT THEY WERE DOING ....FOR EACH TIME I BROUGHT THE CAR IN WITH ONE PROBLEM THEY RETURNED IT TO ME WITH ANOTHER. HE COULD ALSO NOT GUARANTEE THAT IF I PAID ANOTHER $550 FOR A NEW BCM THAT IT WOULD SOLVE ALL THE PROBLEMS.... ...AFTER 6 WEEKS AND FOUR TRIPS TO THE DEALER HAVING MY CAR OVER 2 WEEKS I WAS FRUSTRATED AND ANGRY....AND AFTER READING ON THE INTERNET COUNTLESS OTHER DODGE CARAVAN OWNERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS I AM OUTRAGED DODGE HAS IGNORED ITS RESPONSIBILITY TO ITS CONSUMERS. .WHEN I DROPPED IT OFF THE CLOCK, RADIO, LOCKS AND ALARM WERE THE PROBLEM..BUT AN HOUR AFTER I PICKED IT UP IT STARTED RAINING AND GUESS WHAT....THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WERE NOT OPERATING. *JB

THE CRUISE CONTROL,AND HORN BEGAN MALFUNCTIONING ABOUT 6 MONTHS AFTER I BOUGHT MY USED MINI VAN. I NOW HAVE NO HORN OR CRUISE AND AIR BAG IS IS DOUGHT. I HAVE HEARD THAT THE CLOCKSPRING IN THE 1996 DODGE VANS HAVE BEEN DEFECTIVE. I NEED TO KNOW IF THE NEW ONES HAVE BEEN INPROVED, OR IF THEY OR GOING TO BE REPLACED AS A MATTER OF SAFTY. ALSO FROM TIME TO TIME THE WIPER BLADES COME ON AND GO OFF BY THEM SELVES. AND ONE TIME THE RADIATOR FAN CAME ON THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT BY IT SELF AND DRAINED THE BATTERY DEAD. THE FAILURE CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO HESITATE AT TIMES. WHILE DRIVING OVER SMALL BUMPS IN THE ROAD AT 15 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY VEERED TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THIS IS A REPORT OF A DESIGN DEFECT IN THE DODGE CARAVAN. AFTER DISCUSSION, CHRYSLER CORP. HAS NOT ADMITTED ANY ISSUE AND THERE IS NO RECALL APPLICABLE. THE PROBLEM IS THE FACT THAT THE RIGHT FRONT STRUT TOWER (SUPPORTS VEHICLE) IS RUSTING THROUGH. THIS IS MORE THAN COSMETIC AND SHOULD NOT HAPPEN AT ANY VEHICLE AGE / MILEAGE. ULTIMATE FAILURE WILL ALLOW THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE SUSPENSION TO FAIL WITH POTENTIAL LOSS OF CONTROL AND LOSS OF LIFE. EVEN THOUGH THIS COMPONENT HAS NOT FAILED COMPLETELY ON MY DODGE CARAVAN, I WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT THE SAFETY IMPLICATIONS WERE UNDERSTOOD AND STUDIED. THANK-YOU. DT

DT: THE CONTACT OWNED A 1996 DODGE CARAVAN. HAD TO HAVE SEAT WELDED BECAUSE IT WOULD LEAN ALL THE WAY BACK. THIS WAS ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT, AND IT WAS A HIGH BACK. I RECEIVED A RADIATOR FAN RELAY RECALL, COULD THIS DEFECTIVE RELAY HELP THE MAJOR TRANSMITION SEALS FAIL? IF SO, IS DODGE/CHRYSLER RESPNSIBLE FOR THE $1300 REPAIR OF THE FAULTY TRANSMISION SEALS? IF SO, HOW DO I FILE A CLAIM WITH THE MANUFACTURER? THE TRANSMISSION REPAIR SHOP CLAIMS THE SEAL FAILURE WAS DUE TO EXTREME HEAT, HE STATED THAT THE SEALS WERE VERY BRITTLE, LIKE DRY NOODLES, NOTHING LIKE THE SOFT RUBBER THAT THEY SHOULD RESEMBLE.

WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 60MPH CARAVAN BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN TO ABOUT 40MPH AND DID NOT WANT TO ACCELERATE WHEN GAS PEDAL WAS PUSHED DOWN. PULLED OFF TO SIDE OF ROAD AND PUT VAN IN PARK. WAITED A FEW MINUTES THEN PUT VAN IN DRIVE AND TRIED TO PULL BACK ONTO SHOULDER. VAN WOULD NOT MOVE AND HEARD A SQUELLING NOISE. PUT VAN BACK IN PARK. TRIED AGAIN TO PULLE ONTO HIGHWAY, THIS TIME IT WENT INTO DRIVE BUT SEEMED TO BE SLIPPING OR NOT FULLY ENGAGED IN GEAR. FINALLY MADE IT TO A SERVICE STATION A COUPLE HUNDRED YARDS FROM WHERE I PULLED OFF OF THE HIGHWAY. HAD VAN TOWED ON FLATBED TO LIBERTY DODGE. UPON INITIAL INSPECTION OF TRANSMISSION FOUND DIP STICK NOT PROPERLY SEATED/SEALED IN TRANSMISSION. LIBERTY DODGE SUGGESTED TRANSMISSION BE PULLED AND TORE DOWN FOR FURTHER INSPECTION. WHEN MECHANIC STARTED TO REMOVE TRANSMISSION NOTICED TRANSMISSION MOUNT BUSTED LOOSE FROM TRANSMISSION CASE AND TRANSMISSION CASE CRACKED. MECHANIC FINISHED REMOVING TRANSMISSION FRON VAN AND REPORTED TO SERVICE MANAGER TRANSMISSION WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED DUE TO MOUNT BEING BUSTED AND CASE CRACKED. VAN HAS ONLY 44,292 MILES ON IT. SERVICE MANAGER AND MECHANIC COULD NOT TELL ME WHAT OR HOW THE TRANSMISSION MOUNT OR CASE COULD GET CRACKED. SUGGESTED MAYBE VAN HAD RAN OVER SOMETHING OR HIT A BIG POTHOLE IN ROAD. DEALERSHIP WOULD NOT PAY ANY PART OF THE REPLACEMENT COST OF TRANSMISSION BECAUSE THEY SAID THE FACTORY WARRANTY WAS ONLY 36,000 MILES AND THE VAN HAD OVER 44,000 MILES ON IT. VAN WAS BROADSIDED IN MAY 1999 ON DRIVERS SIDE. WHEN IT WAS HIT IT WAS PARKED. WAS KNOCKED APPROXIMATELY 4 TO 6 FT UP OVER A CURB AND STOPPED IN A GRASSY AREA ADJACENT TO PARKING SPOT. HAD FRONT DOOR, FRONT FENDER, DOOR JAM, REPLACED WITH REALIGNMENT DONE. APPROXIMATELY $4,000 TO $5,000 DAMAGE. WONDER IF THIS MIGHT HAVE CRACKED THE TRANSMISSION CASE AND IT EVEVTUALLY CRACKED ENOUGH TO BREAK THE MOUNT OFF AND LOOSING ALL FLUID THEN QUITTING ALTOGETHER.*AK

WHILE TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH A CLICKING NOISE CAME FROM UNDER THE VAN. I REMOVED MY FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR AND THE NOISE SOFTENED. I HAVE A 1996 DODGE CARAVAN. THE BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS WERE REPLACED IN JUNE OF 2009. BENDIX BRAKE PADS AND BENDIX ROTORS WERE USED. ON DECEMBER 15, 2009, BOTH BRAKE ROTORS FAILED CAUSING A TOTAL LOSS OF BRAKING. WHILE SLOWING DOWN A LOUD BANG CAME FROM THE FRONT OF THE VAN. THE BRAKES DID NOT FEEL RIGHT AT THIS POINT. WHILE LOOKING FOR A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OVER AND STOP, ANOTHER LOUD BANG WAS HEARD. AT THAT POINT THE VAN HAD NO BRAKES. THE VAN WAS STOPPED USING THE PARKING BRAKE. UPON INVESTIGATION IT WAS FOUND THAT BOTH FRONT BRAKE ROTORS HAD FAILED. THE MIDDLE HUB SECTION OF THE ROTOR HAD SEPARATED FROM THE ROTOR. THE FAILURE WAS THE SAME IN BOTH ROTORS. MY SON AND I WERE INVOLVED THE FIRST TIME THERE WAS A FIRE. HE WAS BURNT SLIGHTLY. THE SECOND TIME, ONLY MYSELF. WE ARE CONCLUDING NOW, THAT THE DIFFICULTY IS WITHIN THE VAN. THE TRANSMISSION ON THIS CAR GAVES PROBLEM AT ABOUT 3 MONTHS SINCE PURCHASE. WE BROUGHT IT AND EXPLAINED THAT THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG, BUT THEY LIED TO US AND SAID IT WAS NOT. EVENTUALLY, ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF LATER, THE TRANSMISSIN FINALLY BROKE AND THEY HAD TO REPLACE IT WITH A NEW ONE. AFTER THAT THE CAR CONTINUED TO JERK VIOLENTLY WEHENEVER WE WERE GOING UP HILL AND AT 45 MPH. WE KEPT BRING IN IT IN FOR THEM TO FIX IT, KNOWING THAT THIS MIGHT CREATE OTHER SERIOUS PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR, BUT THEY CONTINUED TO REFUSE TO FIX IT BECAUSE THE JERKING MOTION WAS NOT QUITE AS PRONOUNCED WHEN THEIR MECHANIC DROVE IT. ACCORDING TO THEM, CHRISLER WOULD NOT ALLOW THEM TO SEE THE TRANSMISSION UNLESS IT JUSTIFIED IT BY BEING COMPLETELY OUT OF COMMISSION. WE HAD THEM TRY TO SERVICE IT ONE MORE TIME, BUT INSTEAD, THEY TRIED TO FIX OTHER THINGS IN IT AND EVEN TRIED TO CHARGE ME FOR THEM. I DID NOT PAY BECAUSE THEY DID NOT FIX THE TRANSMISSION AND THE OTHER THINGS ADJUSTED HAD NO RELATION TO THE PROBLEM. ABOUT FOUR WEEKS AFTER THIS SERVICE, I WOKE UP TO GO TO MY CONGREGATION WITH MY CHILDREN, WHEN MY CHILD INFORMED ME THAT THE CAR WAS BURNING. I WENT TO LOOK CLOSELY AND AND SAW WHAT LOOKED LIKE A SMALL CANDLE LIGHT. I TOLD MY CHILDREN TO GO INSIDE THE HOUSE AS GAS FUMES COULD BE LEAKING AND THE CAR COULD EXPLODE. I WENT UP TO CALL THE FIRE DEPT,WHICH TOOK ME ABOUT A MINUTE, AND BY THE TIME I GOT BACK, THE CAR WAS ALREADY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THIS OCCURRED, WITHOUT ANYONE TURNING ANYTHING ON, BE THAT IGNITION OR ELECTRICAL COMPONENT. WHILE TURNING INTO A PARKING SPACE I TOUCHED BREAK AND THE VAN ACCELERATED TO FULL THROTTLE. THE VAN JUMPED THE CURB AND WAS HEADING TOWARD 3 PEOPLE, I TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL ENOUGH TO HIT A LIGHT POLE INSTEAD OF THEM. THE VAN QUIT RACING FOR A FEW SECONDS AND THEN REVVED UP AGAIN. THE LIGHT POLE FELL AND I WAS AGAIN HEADED TOWARD THE PEOPLE. I PUT BOTH FEET ON THE BREAK AND WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VAN, BUT NOT BEFORE HITTING THE PEOPLE. LUCKILY THEY WERE JUST BRUISED BECAUSE I JUST BUMPED THEM AND DIDN'T RUN OVER THEM. THIS ALL HAPPENED IN A MATTER OF SECONDS. THIS VEHICLE HAS A CHRONIC DESIGN PROBLEM WITH THROWING ITS SERPENTINE BELT WHENEVER THE TENSION PULLEY GETS WET. SOON AS THE BELT IS THROWN THERE IS NO POWER STEERING, AND IT STEERS 10 TIMES WORSE THAN A MACK TRUCK. THE LACK OF STEERING IS A DEFINITE SAFETY HAZARD TO EVERY OTHER VEHICLE ON THE ROAD. AS IT HAPPENS SUDDENLY BY DRIVING THROUGH A WATER PUDDLE, ETC. THERE IS VIRTUALLY NO TIME TO REACT. IN ADDITION TO LACK OF STEERING THERE IS NO ALTERNATOR OUTPUT, RESULTING IN RAPID BATTERY DRAIN. ALSO THERE IS NO COOLANT SYSTEM FAN RESULTING IN RAPID ENGINE OVERHEATING. THIS DESIGN FAULT HAS BEEN KNOWN FOR WELL OVER A DECADE, NO MAKE THAT 2 DECADES, BUT CHRYSLER HAS NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED A PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM DATES BACK TO ALL CHRYSLER MINI-VAN DESIGNS FROM THE EARLY 1990S TO AT LEAST 2000. IF THE LACK OF STEERING IS NOT A SAFETY RELATED DEFECT I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS. WE HAVE A USED WHEELCHAIR CONVERSION CARAVAN VAN TO TRANSPORT MY WIFE. THIS LATEST INCIDENT WAS THE PAST SATURDAY NIGHT AS WE LEFT A RESTAURANT TO RETURN HOME. PUTTING THE BELT YOURSELF IS NOT EASY, EVEN WITH THE DIAGRAM (THANK GOODNESS THEY HAVE THE DIAGRAM UNDER THE HOOD FOR OTHER MECHANICS, DO IT YOURSELFERS) THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN, BUT NOT A RECALL. CALLED NHTSA VIA 888 LINE TO CHECK ON A RECALL OF AN AIR BAG SWITCH TRANSFERRED TO "ROWLAND". HE TOOK THE MAKE AND MODEL INFO AND SAID THERE WAS A "RECALL" BUT THAT NHTSA DID NOT HAVE THE VIN #S EFFECTED. HE GAVE ME THE RECALL NUMBER FOR CHRYSLER 800-853-1403. "BEVERLY" ASKED DEMOGRAPHIC INFO AND AFTER REPEATED REQUESTS SHE FINALLY DID GIVE SOME INFO. SHE SAYS THERE IS "NO OFFICIAL" REQUEST BUT THAT CHRYSLER IS CONDUCTING AN INVESTIGATION (SHE DID NOT GIVE ME ANY EXPECTED DATE OF COMPLETION). I WAS GIVEN A CASE # 10626557. I ASKED TO SPEAK WITH "SOMEONE" WHO COULD ANSWER MY QUESTIONS ABOUT A TIMELINE. I WAS ON HOLD FOR APPROX. 5 MINUTES AND "SHARON CRENSHAW" (SUPERVISOR) CAME ON THE LINE AND REPEATED THAT NO TIMELINE IS AVAILABLE. I THANKED HER BUT TOLD HER THAT NHTSA TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS A RECALL. SHARON SAID THAT CARS THAT ARE INCLUDED WILL RECEIVE A NOTICE VIA THE MAIL. I COULD CHOOSE TO TAKE MY "CHANCES" AND GO TO A DEALER AND HAVE THEM CHECK THE SWITCH AND REPAIR IF NEEDED. THEN I COULD SUBMIT A REQUEST FOR "POSSIBLE" REIMBURSEMENT. I ASKED IF THE DEALER COULD COMPARE THE PROBLEM TO THE NHTSA DESCRIPTION OF THE SWITCH AND TELL ME IF IT IS THE SAME. SHARON SAID THE DEALER DOES NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THAT INFORMATION. THE BRAKE PEDAL GOES TO THE FLOOR. IT HAS BEEN ALMOST 3 MONTHS TRYING TO GET FIXED. THE FIRST DEALER REPLACED THE MASTER CYLINDER TWICE AND BLED AIR TO TRY TO REPAIR. THE SECOND DEALER PERFORMED A BRAKE INSPECTION. THEY FOUND A LOT OF AIR IN THE LEFT REAR LINE AND ALSO BLED THE ABS SYSTEM. I ALSO HAD THEM CHECK THE STEERING BECAUSE THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON WHEN I TURNED THE STEERRING WHEEL AND STEERING WAS NOISEY, LIKE A GROANING SOUND. THEY REPORTED THE CLOCK SPRING CLICKING WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL WAS TURNED CAUSING THE AIR BAG LIGHT TO COME ON - AND THERE IS A MOAN OR A HONK NOISE WHEN TURNING WHICH WOULD TAKE NEW P/S HOSES TO REPAIR. ONE WEEK LATER THE PEDAL WAS ONCE AGAIN GOING TO THE FLOOR AND THE ABS STILL COMING ON. THE DEALER SAID THEY WOULD ORDER A PUMP. WHICH TOOK 2 WEEKS TO GET IN. WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN THEY KEPT IT A FEW DAYS THEN CALLED TO SAY IT NEEDED THE ABS HYDRAULIC PACKAGE AT A COST OF $2,000+. THEY RECOMMENDED I CALL CHRYSLER CUSTOMER SERVICE TO SEE IF THEY COULD ASSIST WITH THE COSTS. CHRYSLER CUSTOMER SERVICE SAID IT WAS A MECHANICAL PART THAT COULD GO OUT AT ANY TIME THEREFORE MY COST SINCE THE VAN IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY (LOW MILEAGE DOESN'T MATTER). THE ENGINE IS JUST THE MOST RECENT PROBLEM. WE WENT AHEAD AND BOUGHT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH IT IS USUALLY NEVER USED. THIS TIME WE USED IT NUMEROUS TIMES. WE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE ELECTRIC WINDOWS, THE STARTER HAS BEEN REPLACED, THE FUEL PUMP, THE ENGINE HEAD, THE ELECTRONIC LOCKS CURRENTLY DO NOT WORK. IT HAS JUST BEEN A REAL LEMON. WE JUST DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO. THIS TIME THE ENGINE BLEW AND THERE WAS NO CLUE THAT ANYTHING WAS WRONG. WE HAVE BEEN STRANDED SEVERAL TIMES AND LAST NIGHT JUST BARELY MADE IT HOME.

INTEGRATED CHILD SEAT WONT RETRACT WHEN PULLED OUT. WEATHERSTRIPPING ON DRIVERS DOOR FELL OFF FOUND OUT THE DRIVERS DOOR WAS NOT ALIGNED PROPERLY. CONSTANT BELT NOISE ESPECIALLY DURING WET CONDITIONS. DEALER MUST REPEATEDLY TIGHTEN THEM. BRAKES PULSATE WHEN APPLYING THEM. REPLACED NUMEROUS COMPONENTS ON REAR BRAKES. FUEL TANK WOULD NOT READ FUEL LEVEL CORRECTLY. DEALER HAD TO REPLACE FUEL TANK, FUEL PUMP, AND OTHER COMPONENTS AND SAID THE FUEL TANK WAS BOWED. DUAL SLIDING DOORS HAVE TO BE REPEATEDLY ADJUSTED BECAUSE THEY BECOME DIFFICULT TO SLIDE. DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW REGULATOR BROKE FOR NO APPARENT REASON. RIGHT REAR CHILD SAFETY SEAT HAD HOLE IN THE BUCKLE. REPLACED BATTERY ONCE.INSTALLED CHILD SAFETY BELT EXTENSIONS DUE TO RECALL. VAN IS NOW BACK IN SHOP FOR UNKNOWN PROBLEMS, WILL NOT START.

ON OR ABOUT FEBRUARY OF 1999, THE AIRBAG LIGHT STARTING BLINKING ON AND OFF, AND I THOUGHT IT WAS POSSIBLY A BLOWN FUSE. DURING THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY I TOOK THE VAN IN FOR SERVICE AND WHILE THERE IN INFORMED THE SERVED MANAGER THAT THE AIRBAG LIGHT HAD BEGUN TO BLINK AND I THOUGHT MAYBE A FUSE HAD BLOWN. HE AGREED TO HAVE IT CHECKED ALONG WITH THE OTHER REPAIRS I HAD REQUESTED. ONE REPAIR BEING THE SQUEALING BRAKES I HAD REPAIRED IN OCTOBER OF 98. THE SERVICE MANAGER ASSURED ME THE BRAKES WERE FINE, AND THAT THOSE KIND OF BRAKES WILL OFTEN SQUEAL. AFTER THAT HE INFORMED ME THAT IN ORDER TO SOLVE THE AIRBAG PROBLEM I WOULD HAVE TO PAY THEM AN ADDITIONAL $800.00, BECAUSE THE AIRBAG WAS NO GOOD. AND I TOLD THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT THE AIRBAG HAD NEVER BEFORE DEPLOYED. HOW COULD IT NOT BE ANY GOOD? I ASKED THE SERVICE MANAGER. HE THEN TOLD ME IT WAS A MANUFACTURES DEFECT. BUT BECAUSE I HAD GONE OVER THE 36000 MILE LIMIT, THEN I HAD TO PAY THE FULL COST. I THEN CALL THE CHYSYLER COOPERATION, AND INFORMED THEM OF THIS SITUATION, THEY ALSO TOLD ME THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY, BUT THEY WOULD PAY A PORTION WHICH I FEEL WAS NOT FAIR, BECAUSE THE AIRBAG WAS INSTALLED MALFUNCTIONED/NOT WORKING IN THE FIRST PLACE. THE VAN IN QUESTION IS THE ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION I HAVE FOR MY FAMILY. BY GOD'S GRACE WE HAVE NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT TO FIND OUT THAT THE AIRBAGS WON'T WORK. SINCE WE PURCHASED OUR VAN IN AUGUST OF 1997, WE HAVE HAD MANY REPAIRS AND VISITS TO THE DEALER. AS OF TODAY, THEY HAVE NOT FIXED OR DIAGNOSED THE BRAKE PROBLEMS. WHEN COMING TO A STOP OR APPLYING MY BRAKES, A CRUNCHING SOUND OCCURS ,AND I CAN FEEL IT IN THE PEDAL. IT IS A FAIRLY LOUD SOUND AND THE VIBRATION IS DISTRACTING BECAUSE YOU LOSE YOUR BRAKE PEDAL FOR A PERIOD OF 1-2 SECONDS. I HAVE TALKED TO OTHER DODGE CARAVAN OWNERS AND PLAN TO TAKE A DETAILED SURVEY ON THIS MATTER, BUT, NONE TO THIS POINT HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM. THIS LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THIS IS A DEFECT IN THE BRAKE SYSTEM OR ANTILOCK BRAKE COMPUTER SYSTEM WHICH IS UNDETECTABLE. THIS DOES NOT OCCUR ALL THE TIME, AND NOT UNDER THE SAME CONDITIONS. THIS, ALSO, LEADS ME TO THE CONCLUSION THERE IS A MAJOR SAFTEY DEFECT HERE. I HAVE HAD THIS TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAY THEY CANT DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO, GET IN AN ACCIDENT? I HAVE ASKED THAT THEY RECALL MY VAN, REFUND FULL PURCHASE PRICE OR REPLACE MY VEHICLE WITH ONE SIMILAR TO MINE. THIS IS NOT THE ONLY PROBLEM: TODAY IT WAS IN FOR BRAKES AND A BLOWN ENGINE HEAD GASKET. PREVIOUSLY, CATALYTIC CONVERTER/ BLOWER MOTOR/BATTERY/ SPEED SENSOR AND ANTI RATTLE BUMPERS THAT STILL HAVENT CORRECTED PROBLEM/FUEL FILTER GROUND STRAP AND FUEL FILLER TUBE GROUND STRAP HAVE BEEN REPLACED. ALSO, DEGLAZED BRAKES, BUT STILL BRAKES SQUEAK.FINALLY, HEADLIGHTS REPLACED W/HOUSING/LAMP, AND WHATEVER ELSE THEY HAVE DONE TO IT WHILE IN THE SHOP RIGHT NOW. IT HAS BEEN THERE SINCE TUESDAY FEB.02. THIS VAN IS NO WAY WORTH THE HASSLES THAT I HAVE BEEN PUT THROUGH AND I DONT THINK ANYONE SHOULD HAVE THIS MANY PROBLEMS SO EARLY ON. I HAVE DONE EXTENSIVE RESEARCH ON THIS MODEL AND HAVE FOUND ATLEAST 100 COMPLAINTS FOR TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS AND OTHER MAJOR REPAIRS AND UNDIAGNOSED PROBLEMS WITH THE ENGINE. I THINK IT IS TIME SOMEONE STEPPED IN AND TOOK A GOOD LOOK AT THIS 96 VEHICLE BECAUSE IT IS NOT UP TO SAFTEY STANDARDS BY A LONG SHOT. THANK YOU.
