ON AUG. 19 MY HUSBAND HEARD A VERY FAINT "PING" ABOUT A 2 MILES FROM HOME. NOTHING SEEMED TO BE WRONG AND HE FELT IT MUST HAVE BEEN SOMETHING MOVING AROUND IN THE CAR. ON AUG. 20, AFTER DRIVING SEVERAL MILES, I HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE SOMETHING UNDER THE HOOD SELF-DESTRUCTING, THE ODOMETER AND RPM GAUGE WENT WACKY, AND I HAD NO POWER. I WAS FORTUNATE TO BE PERHAPS 50 YARDS FROM AN AUTO SERVICE CENTER AND COASTED INTO THE DRIVEWAY LEAKING FLUID AND FLINGING PARTS. THE TRANSMISSION HAD BLOWN APART. HAD I BEEN ON A FREEWAY I WOULD LIKELY HAVE BEEN KILLED OR KILLED SOMEONE ELSE. FROM TALKING TO MECHANICS IT SEEMS THAT THIS IS A WELL KNOWN DEFECT AND DODGE MANUFACTURED TRANSMISSIONS WERE NOT MODIFIED, BUT THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALL. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 DODGE CARAVAN. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 2 MPH THE CONTACT SUDDENLY NOTICED A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE. UPON EXAMINING THE VEHICLE THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS HEAVILY LEAKING ONTO THE GROUND UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO THE TRANSMISSION PIN. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 92000.

MY 4 CHILDREN WERE IN MY VAN WHILE IT WAS PARKED AND MY 5 YR OLD GOT INTO DRIVERS SEAT AND PULLED GEAR SHIFT IN REVERSE AND VAN ROLLED DOWN DRIVEWAY, ACROSS ROAD, AND OVER AN EMBANKMENT AND IT TOTALED THE VEHICLE. THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED, THE GEAR SHIFT SHOULD NOT HAVE MOVED WHILE IT WAS IN PARK WITHOUT THE BRAKES BEING APPLIED TO GET IT OUT OF GEAR. 2000 DODGE CARAVAN WITH ONLY 56,000 MILES HAD TO BE TOWED BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION BROKE DOWN AND HAD TO BE REPLACED FOR A TOTAL OF $$2250.00. THEN ON 1/11/06 IT HAPPENED AGAIN. WE HAD TO HAVE A NEW TORQUE CONVERTER PLUS ALL THE OTHER PARTS REPLACED AGAIN. WE HAVE MAINTAINED THIS VEHICLE ACCORDING TO THE MANUAL AND IT HAD TO BE FIXED AT THE CLOSEST TRANSMISSION REPAIR SHOP. I HAVE CONTACTED DODGE ABOUT THIS, AND THEY HAVE DENIED ANY RESPONSIBILITY AND REFUSED TO HEAR OF THIS COMPLAINT. THE MECHANIC RUTLAND TRANSMISSIONS (281) 350-1365 TOLD US THAT HE SEES MANY OF THESE DODGE CARAVANS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. HE TOLD US THAT HE SEES MANY OF THESE VANS WITH SIMILAR TRANSMISSIONS NEEDING REPLACEMENTS THAT GO BAD AROUND THE TIME THAT MINE DID. THIS IS REALLY A HORRIBLE PROBLEM THAT DODGE WILL NO REALIZE. WHAT CAN BE DONE WITH THIS KIND OF PROBLEM THAT SEEMS TO HAPPEN RIGHT AFTER THE VAN IS PAID FOR. WE DID NOT GET THE EXTENDED WARRANTY THINKING THAT NOTHING LIKE THIS WOULD EVER HAPPEN. *AK CAN YOU HELP? I WOULD APPRECIATE THIS VERY MUCH. I CAN FAX THE REPAIR INVOICES IF YOU NEED THEM. EVERY TIME THIS VEHICLE IS TO BE SERVED FOR SMOG CHECK RENEWAL, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BECOMES AN ISSUE. FOR 2014 I SPENT MONEY IN REPAIRS DEALING WITH A NEW EGR VALVE. THE PROBLEM STOPPED AND PASSED SMOG CHECK. THIS YEAR 2016 I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. ALL AREAS OF SMOG HAVE PASSED IN THE SMOG TEST EXCEPT THAT RESULTS SHOW A "NOT READY " OBD II SYSTEM. SERPENTINE BELT CAME OFF. I HAVE HAD THIS VEHICLE SINCE 2002, PROBLEM DIDN'T OCCUR TILL MID-2010. SINCE THEN THE BELT HAS CAME OFF AT LEAST 5 TIMES OR MORE. SEEMS EVERY TIME IT RAINS. I'VE HAD THE BELT REPLACED, AND EVERYTHING ELSE REPLACED THAT COULD POSSIBLY AFFECT IT. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO. I HAD IT REPAIRED THIS PAST TUES. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR TIRE REPLACEMENT, THE TIRE PEOPLE SHOWED ME A LEAK ON BOTH REAR BRAKE CYLINDERS. THE FRONT BRAKE CYLINDER NOW ALSO HAS A SMALL LEAK FROM THE GASKET. THE MINIVAN HAS 25,000 MILES ON IT AND WAS PURCHASED DECEMBER 2000. IT IS DRIVEN ON GOOD SUBURBAN ROADS.

2000 DODGE CARAVAN. DRIVER SIDE STRUT CAP RUSTED THROUGH. THIS IS NOT A NORMAL RUST PATTERN. STILL HAVE A 95 CARAVAN AND STRUT CAPS ARE PERFECT. BRAKING SYSTEM IS AWFUL!! I HAVE HAD THE ROTORS AND CALIBERS REPLACED TWICE. EVERY TIME I TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY INFORM ME THAT THIS IS NORMAL FOR THE DODGE CARAVAN. THEY SAY IT IS BECAUSE IT HAS THE BODY OF A VAN BUT THE BRAKING SYSTEM IS DESIGNED FOR THAT OF A MIDSIZE CAR. AND BECAUSE IT IS FRONT WHEEL DRIVE ALL THE WEIGHT AND FORCE RESTS ON THE BRAKING SYSTEM. I FIND THIS APPALLING!! I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS MANY PROBLEMS WITH ANY OTHER VEHICLE I HAVE OWNED. AS A MATTER OF FACT, THE FIRST TIME I HAD TO HAVE THIS WORK DONE, THE VAN WAS ONLY ABOUT 8 MONTHS OLD AND THE "BRAKE WORK" DID NOT FALL UNDER WARRANTY. I WAS TURNING LEFT INTO A PARKING LOT WHEN THE PASSENGER SIDE OUTER TIE ROD BROKE. THIS CAUSED AN IMMEDIATE STOP AS THE WHEEL TURNED IN. I TURN OFF THE DEFROSTER (AC AND VENTILATION), REDUCE WIPER SPEED SETTING, SWITCH FROM HEADLIGHTS TO RUNNING LIGHTS, ALL TO REDUCE ELECTRICAL LOAD. I THEN NOTICE THAT THE POWER STEERING HAS FAILED. IT WAS REALLY SCARY. TRUE FEAR. THE FEAR WHICH WE DO NOT OFTEN ENCOUNTER. I SAFELY GOT THE VEHICLE OFF THE FREEWAY. NO FURTHER FAILURE OF SYSTEMS. I DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE NEAREST SHOP I KNEW OF, WITH CAUTION LIGHTS ON. I THERE LEARNED THAT THE ACCESSORY BELT HAD COME OFF OF THE ENGINE, DUE TO THE RAIN. THE BELT WAS STILL IN GOOD CONDITION, SO THEY SLID THE SAME BELT BACK ON. I WILL HAVE MY PREFERRED MECHANIC INSTALL AN "ANTI SLIP" TENSIONER, BELT, AND PULLEY THIS WEEKEND. THIS ISSUE, THE SERPENTINE BELT SLIPPING OFF THE ENGINE IN RAIN AND SNOW, IS KNOWN TO CHRYSLER, AND KNOWN TO THE NHTSA. BUT IT WAS NOT KNOWN TO ME UNTIL IT THREATENED MY SAFETY, AND THE SAFETY OF THE MOTORISTS AROUND ME. IF I HAD BEGUN GOING AROUND A CURVE WHILE SWITCHING OFF ACCESSORIES, DRIVING ONE HANDED WITH A FAILED POWER STEERING SYSTEM BEFORE I KNEW IT HAD FAILED, I COULD HAVE WRECKED. WHY ONE HANDED? BECAUSE I WAS TURNING OFF ACCESSORIES BECAUSE I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT WAS WRONG, BECAUSE THE WARNING THE CAR PROVIDED SUGGESTED THAT WAS WHAT I SHOULD BE DOING TO KEEP MY CAR FROM STALLING. I DON'T KNOW WHY NHTSA DECIDED THIS DID NOT MERIT A RECALL. THEY WERE WRONG. I TAP THE BRAKE TO DISENGAGE THE CRUISE CONTROL AND IMMEDIATELY FELT THE VAN ACCELERATION. I TURNED INTO THE LEFT LANE TO MISS THE CARS IN THE RIGHT LANE. I REPOSITION MY FOOT BY LIFTING IT UP THINKING THAT I HAD PRESS BOTH THE ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE, AND PRESS IT BACK ON THE BRAKE. SERPENTINE BELT SLIPS OFF IN THE RAIN CAUSING A LOSS IN POWER STEERING, AC (FOR WINDOW DEFOGGING), POWER (NO ALTERNATOR WHEN HEADLIGHTS ARE ON DURING RAIN). WHEN IT SLIPPED OFF, THE ABILITY TO CORRECT FOR LOSS OF TRACTION DUE TO WATER WAS REDUCED DUE TO LACK OF POWER STEERING AND THE WINDSHIELD FOGGED UP QUICKLY DUE TO THE LOSS OF THE AC COMPRESSOR. IN AUGUST THE SAME GARAGE STATED THAT THE BRAKES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND THE ABS NOW NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I COULD ONLY HAVE THE BRAKES DONE AT THIS TIME. I RECENTLY RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FROM DAIMLERCHRYSLER FOR THE UPPER BALL JOINTS IN MY 2000 DODGE DURANGO. I CONTACTED THE COMPANY TO FIND OUT HOW TO HAVE MY CAR FIXED AS THERE IS NO DEALERSHIP WHERE I LIVE. I LET THEM KNOW I LIVED IN KETCHIKAN, ALASKA. THE WOMAN I SPOKE WITH TOLD ME TO CONTACT THE JUNEAU DEALERSHIP AS IT WAS THE CLOSEST TO ME. I CONTACTED THE JUNEAU DEALERSHIP WHO TOLD ME THAT HE COULD SEND ME THE PARTS FROM JUNEAU AND I COULD HAVE THE LABOR DONE IN KETCHIKAN, SENDING HIM THE BILL FOR THE LABOR, WHICH I WOULD BE REIMBURSED FOR AN ALLOTTED AMOUNT OF MONEY. I AGREED, BUT HE NEEDED TO FIND OUT IF HE COULD SEND ME BOTH BALL JOINTS, AS I HAD ONE BALL JOINT REPLACED IN AUGUST OF 2004, WITHOUT BEING REIMBURSED BY DAIMLERCHRYSLER. TODAY, AUGUST 1, 2005, THE GENTLEMAN FROM THE JUNEAU DEALERSHIP CALLED TO TELL ME THAT I SHOULD HAVE BOTH BALL JOINTS REPLACED, BUT THAT HE COULD NO LONGER SEND ME THE PARTS BECAUSE DAIMLERCHRYSLER HAD CONTACTED HIM AND NOW PROHIBITED HIM FROM DOING RECALLS IN THIS FASHION AS IT WAS DEEMED FRAUDULENT. I DIRECTLY CONTACTED DAIMLERCHRYSLER AND SPOKE WITH THE SUPERVISOR "KATHERINE" WHO STATED THAT I HAD TO TAKE MY CAR TO SEATTLE OR JUNEAU TO A DEALERSHIP FOR THE RECALL OR THEY WOULD NOT PAY TO FIX IT. I TOLD HER I LIVED ON AN ISLAND AND COULD NOT AFFORD TO PAY THE FERRY FEE TO DO THAT OR GO WITHOUT ANY TRANSPORTATION FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. SHE SAID THEY COULD NOT COMPENSATE ME FOR TRANSPORTATION AS IT WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL AND THAT THEY WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR MY LIVING ON AN ISLAND, BUT THAT I HAD TO HAVE THE RECALL DONE BECAUSE IT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE. I TOLD HER I DIDN'T WANT THEM TO PAY FOR MY VEHICLE BEING TRANSPORTED, I JUST WANTED THEM TO SEND THE PARTS AS I HAD BEEN TOLD WOULD HAPPEN SO I COULD HAVE IT FIXED. SHE STATED THAT SHE HAD NO AUTHORITY TO OVERRIDE THE DECISION ABOUT THE JUNEAU DEALERSHIP. *NM

DT: THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 DODGE CARAVAN. SHE TOOK VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP LAST WEEK FOR MAINTENANCE. HER HUSBAND JUST PUT NEW BRAKES ON THE VEHICLE AND THE DEALERSHIP INSPECTED THEM AND EVERYTHING WAS GREAT. SHE LEFT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND NOW THE MASTER CYLINDER MALFUNCTIONED. THE DEALERSHIP WOULD NOT SUGGEST HER TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE, BUT SHE HAD TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE HOME. ABS LIGHT HAS BEEN ON HER VEHICLE FOR THE PAST YEAR AND A HALF IT HAS BEEN COMING ON RANDOMLY. DEALERSHIP SAID THEY COULD NOT FIGURE OUT WHAT SHE WAS TALKING ABOUT BECAUSE THE LIGHT WOULD NOT COME ON WHILE THEY WERE TEST DRIVING IT AND THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE. THE BRAKE FAILURE HAPPENED THE DAY AFTER SHE PICKED THE VEHICLE UP FROM THE DEALERSHIP WHICH WAS JULY 8 AND THAT THE SOONEST THEY COULD GET HER VEHICLE IN WAS JULY 15, 2005. SHE HAD A RECALL ON ELECTRICAL SYSTEM , AND THEY WOULD NEVER CHECK THIS. BUT SHE WAS EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE INSIDE LIGHT, STEREO, WINDOWS WOULD NOT GO UP OR DOWN, AND HEADLIGHTS FAILED. THE DEALERSHIP STATED THAT VEHICLE WAS NOT RECALLED. I HAVE TAKEN MY 2000 DODGE DURANGO TO FOREST LAKE DODGE DEALER FOR A CLUNKING NOISE IN MY FRONT END OVER YEAR AGO. I HAD A NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS. THEY SAID AT THAT TIME THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. THEY COULDN'T HEAR ANYTHING. AGAIN WITHIN A COUPLE MONTHS I RETURNED WITH THE SAME PROBLEM ALONG WITH MY PASSENGER WINDOW NOT GOING UP OR DOWN CORRECTLY. ONCE AGAIN THEY SAID OH YOU NEED SHOCKS AND YOU NEED YOUR SERVICE OF WARRENTY PROFORMED OR YOUR WARRENTLY WONT BE ANY GOOD, SO I SAID YES DO WHAT IS UNDER WARRENTY NOTHING ELSE UNLESS I SAY IT OK, WILL MORE WORK WAS PROFORMED AND I ENDED UP PAYING HUNDRED PLUS DOLLARS OUT OF POCKET. AGAIN THEY SAID THERE WAS NO CLUCKING NOISE NOTED AND THAT THE PASSENGER WINDOW ACCORDING TO THE COMPUTER SAID IT FUNCTIONS CORRECTLY. WILL TO THIS DAY OVER A YEAR LATER, THE CLUCK IS THERE AND SHOCKS AND OTHER MAINTENCE WAS COMPLETED, THE PASSENGER WINDOW MOVES SO SLOW THAT WE DONT USE IT AS IT HAS AND STILL DOES QUIT WORKING. INSIDE WHERE THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE COMPOTENT ALSO COMES LOOSE FROM THE MAIN FLOOR. I WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PURCHASE A NEW MANTO WHICH SCREWS TO THE FRAME OF THE DURANGO. I HAD SIDE STEPS PUT ON AFTER PURCHASE BY CHRY. THIS CAUSING THE WINDING SOUND AND FAILURE TO LOCK OR UNLOCK THE DOORS. THE GEAR IS MADE OF SOME KIND OF SOFT PLASTIC MATERIAL FOR THIS TO HAPPEN. ABOUT THE REAR WINDOW, I CHECKED AND FOUND POWER GOING TO THE MOTORS. BUT WITH ONE OF THE WINDOW MOTORS I TAPPED IT AND GOT IT TO WORK FOR ACOUPLE OF DAYS. WITH MY EXPERINCE AS AN AUTO/TRUCK/BUS TECHNICIAN THE MOTORS ARE DEFECTED ALONG WITH THE DOOR ACTUATORS. I HOPE THESE ISSUES CAN GET RESOLVED, BECAUSE OVERALL MY VEHICLE IS GOOD AT 60,000 MILES.
