How to read a Dodge Durango VIN — every digit explained

Every Dodge Durango carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Durango.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your Durango VIN

Fix. K&n will provide owners with a free repair kit along with repair instructions. The recall began on april 20, 2006.

Suspension:front:hub08E064000

What's wrong. Skf is recalling 2,805 hub units, part no. Br930361, sold as a service part for 1997-2004 dodge dakota vehicles and 1999-2003 dodge durango vehicles equipped with 2-wheel drive & rear axle abs. Due to a specification error, the rotor pilot for the hub unit may be too long. This results in the wheel to not be seated fully against the hub flange face during mounting.

Risk. Improper seating of the wheel can result in excessive vibration, brake rotor noise, difficulty removing the wheel after installation and operation of the vehicle, and possibly wheel-end separation during vehicle operation. Should wheel-end separation occur, the driver could loose control of the vehicle, possibly resulting in a crash.

Fix. Skf will notify owners and replace the defective hub units free of charge. The recall began on november 5, 2008. Owners may contact skf vsm north america customer service at 1-800-644-8999.

Fix. Dealers will install a rubber isolator on all vehicles that do not indicate tube contact. Vehicles that show contact and have less than 45,000 miles and no signs of red rust will have the rubber isolator installed with silicone to protect the tube where the coating has worn off. Vehicles that exhibit contact, and have more than 45,000 miles or show signs of red rust, will have the brake tube replaced with the production tube and isolator.

I hired attorney mcgraw of olivebranch, ms; who later stated he did not have the time to put into this matter, but was certainly a good case. I emailed dateline regarding this matter also. 1998 Durango

Dodge durango 1998 ball joint failure and full separation with no warning, which caused extensive damage in an on-road accident to several vehicles. Dodge corporation will not acknowledge the hundreds of ball joint failures and lost lives due to this poor design and defective ball joints. My vehicle has 84,000 miles on it and ball joints have been replaced 3 times! Ball joints, according to top mechanics are supposed to last about 100,000 miles before replacement and rarely separate. These components used by dodge are deadly, deficient, and ought to have been recalled years ago. How many more lives have to be lost before the issue is properly dealt with?? *tr

2018 Durango

I was driving on I75 North in Florida near Ocala (exit 358) traveling about 70mph when I approached slowing traffic. I attempted a slow and steady stop without slamming on the brakes. The emergency braking system engaged but the vehicle failed to stop and I was not able to completely floor the brakes. In an effort to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of me and causing a multiple car collision I swerved onto the grassy side of the road. Because the car would not stop completely my passenger front wheel made contact with a concrete ditch and my vehicle flipped over resulting in a total loss.

2015 Durango

After backing out of garage, i placed the vehicle in park with engine running while i walked back into garage. Note vehicle was parked on a slope. Emergency brake was not set. While in garage, i noticed vehicle was rolling down driveway. I was knocked down by drivers side door while trying to get in to apply brake. The vehicle then rolled over my mailbox, across street, over neighbor's mailbox and stopped when it hit a tree. My wife was in car so knows that rear parking sensors never chimed to indicate it was about to hit something which i believe confirms that the car wasn't still in reverse after backing out of garage. The air bags were not deployed. I believe that vehicle slipped out of park. It was not moving when i first got out. My injuries from being knocked to the ground and hers from being in the drivers seat both feel they didn't warrant emergency room treatment but will get treatment if pain persists.

2012 Durango

Our 2012 dodge durango r/t was purchased brand new as a replacement for lemon law buy back of our 2009 dodge journey. The durango is plagued with design flaws. The most obvious is the tipm total integrated module. The failure of this module resulting in our vehicle catching fire. The vehicle cranks but does not start at times, other times when it starts it dies in the street. While taking it to the dealership for repairs they would not repair it and another dealer denied the repairs. The only loaner i was placed in was a brand new durango with the plastic still covering the seats, floor etc. The brand new loaner also contained a faulty tipm. We didn't even have the loaner a day because the lights were bright lighting everyone, alarm was going off driving down the road, radio was crackling, the instrument panel was flashing. Our durango contains all of these issues; left and right rear tail light assemblies are dead, both front struts are blown leaking, spraying fluid under the vehicle onto the frame and brake(s), line(s), transmissions is leaking, high engine oil consumption. Our durango is still under factory warranty, plus a platinum extended warranty. While our vehicle is covered under an extended warranty they will not pay for a rental car because the tipm is national backordered part. Please.... You have to recall this vehicle before others are injured or killed! *tr

2011 Durango

I had smelled something in my car for a while and could not figure out what it was. About 15 mins into my trip, my eyes started to burn and tear, and my nose felt like it was on fire. But i got it subsided. Another 15 mins later i looked over at my passenger side window and realized my car was smoking and it was coming from my sun visor. I had to wait to get to the shoulder of the road as i was in the i-pass lane and had to get past a cement wall before getting my car safely away from other traffic. I stopped my car, and called 911. State trooper showed up, and as he was walking to his car to get a fire extinguisher, flames started. The car was turned off at this time, but the smoke started as i was driving. After the state trooper used the extinguisher, it was still smoking so he called in the fire department. They then ripped the liner down so they could spray the area with water. Once my husband arrived he then disconnected the car battery to make it safe to move the vehicle. We had the vehicle towed to the dealer where the recall for the sun visor was performed. We are now waiting to hear back from chrysler to see what our next step is. I have a doctor appointment scheduled for wednesday, june 24th to verify that everything is okay. Inhaling smoke and the fumes is why i am doing this. This is the first appointment i could get with my doctor.

2005 Durango

1998 Durango

Due to to uneven driveway the vehicle stalled, or transmission began to spin and not move, at which the vehicle ignition was shut-off. It was attempted to push the vehicle about 50 feet to a parking place. Another person offers to help, then pushes vehicle 25/50 feet...advises to turn the wheel. The wheel does not want to turn. The vehicle has used a lot of power steering fluid almost daily(has a history of squealing and hard turning at start unless lubricated). So advice to place vehicle in reverse caused the steering wheel to be even harder to turn, if at all. I requested help from the bystander, who at which point comes to the driver side where i was standing outside of the vehicle also. It's unknown if the bystander help turned the ignition on, or if the ignition somehow turned on by itself. The vehicle was occupied by one addition passenger at the time of the crash. The vehicle traveled in reverse gear, without anyone pushing on the accelerator. There were minor to severe injuries, and damage to 2 vehicles and one structure.

~october 2017, i was parked in my driveway with my daughter in the rear seat; i was getting ready to exit my driveway when i realized my key fob was inside the house. I left the car to go get my key fob and left the door open; by the time i got to my back door, my daughter was screaming (she was in her car seat) and the car was moving backward down the driveway, scraping against the house, into the street and across the road to the neighbor's house up their driveway. I ran after the vehicle and right before it struck my neighbor's garage, was able to throw my foot into the brake from the side while i fell on the ground. I was bruised and my car was damaged, but most importantly my daughter was fine but scared. I went to the dealership to have them take a look at the door/mirror and complained about the issue (this is referenced in the "action plan" for the visit), and the gentleman at the mike smith beaumont dealership stated that my vehicle must have had a quirk, because there was already an update available on that which they would test. When i came back to get my vehicle, i asked about the update, and he stated that he was mistaken; that only pickup trucks were getting that update. I asked why, because there's no less safety risk in a durango (in fact, probably more children). He did not have an answer but said he would get back to me. No one did, and i complained to dodge online. Eventually in august 2018 i got an oddly phrased notice that did not use the word recall but stated that "repairs" needed to be made. I wrote to dodge again and asked if they would assist with the original problems to my door/window but they would not. I am disappointed that dodge did not include durangos in this obviously existing technology and disappointed that it took a year to take any action (which does not help my repairs). I am very grateful we were not more badly injured.

99 dodge durango slt 5.2 318 motor blew. Only had 105,000 miles on it changed oil and did upkeep right on schedule. This pile crap has been nothing but a lemon since we bought it. First it started shutting off while driving, had to fight tooth and nail to get dodge to replace pcm, i did the investigation to figure out the problem because they did not want to pay for it and tried really hard to stretch this out to where i would not have warranty anymore. They wanted to send us off with a black box after they supposedly fixed problem but didn't. Now my motor blew! We have taken motor out and it looks all burned up...what a complete piece of crap..so angry that dodge refuses to step up on these obvious defects that are their fault not the poor consumer who paid way to much for this lemon of a vehicle. Also have to replace all ball joints, because the 99 should of been included in the recall!!!! Thanks for nothing dodge!!! I have a 2004 dodge durango slt 5.7l hemi. Never had any big issues with it until in 2014 i was driving home from work on the highway when i heard a loud bang and loud knocking noises followed shortly by an abrupt shut off. I tried immediately to get to the side of the road but when i lost power steering from the engine ceizing and couldn't correct myself enough so i went down the hill off the side of the highway while trying to break with no brake booster anymore as well. I ended up running into a couple small tree's and finally stopping . Air bags didn't deploy and i only jammed my finger and hurt my back some but i only missed a larger group of tree by inches. My front bumper was ripped off, my drivers side headlight was broke as well as my grille and my windshield cracked. I took it to my mechanic and found out that the engine "hydrolocked" and a piston rod punched through my engine and broke a lot of other things internally. Needless to say the engine is gone. After doing some research i have found that there are hundreds more people that had this happen to their 04 and 05 dodge durango with the 5.7l hemi. Apparently the water runs right down onto the engine and pools up and the intake is faulty so it sucks that water up and causes a catastrophic hydrolock with the engine which could kill someone if they lose power steering and power brakes within a second. I've been trying to save to get a new engine (which will cost about $3800 alone) because i bought this for too much and neither dodge or my insurance would cover it so it's now a pile of scrap until i hopefully can get a new engine or have dodge buy this death trap back. Dodge needs to buy these back or fix them! This is by far not an individual case and it is very dangerous and costly!

So to make a long story short, it has happened again !!! I have not even had the truck back for 1 month !!! Got in the truck on saturday around 10:00 am (5/20) with my wife and 2 children after a haircut. Started the truck, put it reverse and nothing. It stalled !?!?! Tried twice more and the same thing happened. Finally the truck stayed started on the forth try. Started down the road doing about 30-35 mph, coming up to a traffic light and the truck stalled. Imagine that !!! Stopped and put in park and started right back up. Got back to our house and called dealer. He said bring it up. Got a call today (monday 5/22) from dealer and you will never guess the answer i got. Your right !!! " sorry but we cannot duplicate this problem and no codes are coming up". Not sure what to do at this point. We are scared of this vehicle and we are afraid to drive it. No one seems to care. *nm

Beginning with the first time i filled the tank, when the fuel fuller nozzle is set to auto fill, when the filler clicks off, fuel gushes back out of the tank and down the side of the car and all over the ground. I was standing too close and my pants leg got soaked to the point that my skin burned from the presence of gasoline. [i'm glad that i quit smoking in 1984 now for an additional reason.] the next time i filled the tank, i watched the volume delivered and stopped the flow about two gallons before full and gently pumped the last amount in. When it was full, it burped out about a pint and a half anyway. This is a real safety hazard. I can't believe they recalled the 2005 for this issue and didn't fix the real problem! This problem needs to be addressed before someone bets burned. *tr

2006 Durango

From the time my vehicle was new i had issues with the gas nozzle clicking off but the gas coming back out of the tank. In the beginning it was a very little bit and i could stand there and monitor it and pump in slowly and it wouldn?t do it. It has steadily progressed to where every time i try and fill my tank the gas pump would click off but the gas gushes out onto me and the car and the pavement ? Anywhere from 2 to 5 cups of gas. The tank isn't even full when it does this. I have had it do it when i have only pumped 1 gallon into the tank and continue to click off every couple of cents. It takes at least 10 minutes to put gas in my tank and then it isn't full. It does this no matter what gas station i go to. I have had the tps replaced 3 times, the fuel pump twice......i can't help but feel that all of these problems are inter-related. My minor concern is that this will cause a medical emergency for me as i have acute asthma/breathing issues. This has caused asthma attacks that i have been able to control but my fear is one day i will not be able to control it. My major concern is the gushing out of fuel will eventually result in a fire at the gas station. I really cannot believe there has not been a recall issued as this was a problem with the 2005 durango's that a recall was issued (nhtsa campaign id #09v003000, nhtsa action #rq08005) - no one is working to protect the public after their obvious failure to correct the problem. *tr

2006 Durango

References recall nhtsa campaign number 09v003000 for 2005 dodge durango fuel system. My 2006 dodge durango has the same defect as listed in the 2005 recall. A local dodge dealer has inspected and confirmed the defected fuel system gasoline and storage tank assembly in my durango. Dodge will not cover the total cost of this safety repair since there is not a recall on the 2006 and dodge told me to file a complaint with the nhtsa. I am urging the nhtsa to re-elevate the 300+ complaints and extend the recall to the 2006 durango and others. My 2006 durango fuel system defect began in june 2010 with the most recent hazardous incident occurring in december 2010. The shut off seems to have declined to the point that the gas now sprays out of the tank. This is a very serious and dangerous safety matter. I became covered in gasoline as the gas sprayed like a hose out onto my coat and hair. My hair later touched my eye and my eye was stinging from where the gas must have touched my contact lens. My daughter was with me at the time and we both had to smell the potent fumes from the gas on my clothes. I had to throw my fleece coat in the trash. I am fortunate i did not come in contact with a spark or it would have caught my clothes on fire. The potential hazard of cold weather and static electricity is a reality with gasoline. I am alarmed that dodge would not submit a recall on the affected vehicles after 2005. This is a safety matter that dodge needs to address. I cannot fill my durango gas tank to the full mark without the eruption of gas coming from the tank. It started out as a spillage but now it spills and sprays out. Other owners should be warned so that a fire, serious injury or death does not occur.

2006 Durango

On my 2006 dodge durango, every time i fill up to where the gas nozzle clicks it spews fuel all over the place. It is usually under a quart, but it has repeatedly caused some scary circumstances as to where i feared for my safety. *tr

2006 Durango

Have begun experiencing overfilling of fuel tank during pumping at fuel stations. Problem occurs at various locations and is not fuel-provider specific. The resulting gas spill is significant and affects the individual pumping the fuel as well as spilling on the vehicle to a degree that fuel fumes are present in the interior of the closed vehicle. Contacted local dodge dealer, as well as, dodge corporate and both have refused to pursue matter despite a recall of the 2005 model year (with the same body style) for the same defect. *tr

2006 Durango

Every time i fill up my 2006 dodge durango, the gasoline nozzle shuts off when the tank is full but the vehicle still "spits" out roughly a half gallon of gasoline all over the ground, vehicle and the person filling the tank. I have tried many gas stations to be sure that it is not the pump and have verified that it is the vehicle. In my research and discussions with dodge dealers, it seems that a recall was issued for 2005 models for this exact issue, but they fail to issue one for the 2006 model. I called daimlerchrysler and they refused to do anything about it. The mechanic says that it will cost roughly $800 to have the fuel tank replaced and get the problem fixed. I find this unreasonable as this is a manufacturer defect and a potentially serious safety hazard. As a firefighter, i have experience with fuel spills and the definite potential for a large fire as a result of a small fuel spill such as this. In addition to the danger of fire there is also a potential for aspiration of gasoline liquid or fumes as a result of the gasoline spewing out at the person filling the tank. This could cause potential death if it occurred. I personally have had the gasoline spew out and got a drop in my eye, requiring me to run to the bathroom and flush my eye out. The spills have also ruined articles of my clothing and will eventually ruin the paint on my vehicle. *tr

2005 Durango

I have a 2005 dodge durango limited. I have a safety issue on the vehicle when i'm fueling the vehicle up and the gas pump safety switch clicks and shuts off the pump when the tank is full, fuel spews back out of the tank. This fuel spray can fly 2 to 3 feet in any direction depending on the fuel nozzle used. I called about this safety issue to a local dodge dealership and they told me my durango is not included in the recall even though there is a recall for that exact problem and i would have to pay for a new fuel tank to get it fixed. *tr

*tr

2005 Durango

When filling up gas tank fuel backflows out , splashing on my face and clothes. This problem occurs every time you try to fill the tank full. I have not yet fixed the problem was told by the dealership that it was a inlet check valve/ fuel tank assembly. The cost of the repairs is around $1000 . I feel this should be covered by chrysler!!!! *tr

There is a very sharp side on the back rear taillight that connects with the lift gate. This razor sharp edge has cut myself, husband, and almost my son. The only thing that saved him from getting cut was the sleeve on his shirt. I have reported this issue to Chrysler. An investigation is in process. The man came out to take pictures he also agreed this was a safety issue. Both my husband and I have been left with permanent scars.

The rear tail lights have a sharp edge that is beak shaped and if you brush up against it on accident it slices into your skin or clothes. I was loading groceries and my arm skimmed over it and sliced a whole piece of skin off. I have researched the incident to see if others have had the same experience looking for a recall or solution after it happened to me and my husband multiple times most recently myself a big cut and I see forums with other people sharing same story.

This description of the incident has happened numerous times. When the vehicle is stationary i go to the rear of the vehicle and open up the back hatch. Once it is open on several occasions i have cut my upper arm/forearm at the point where the rear taillights are separated. I have felt the area and had family and friends do the same. They all agree it is very sharp and hazardous.

Water has pooled up in the rear track light and shorted out the lights in that particular area including my license plate light. At one point the whole led strip went out on the lift gate. 2014 Durango

This has happened twice, the first time was a month or so ago but it happened again last week and the wound was much worse. The exposed edge of the left and right rear brake light are extremely sharp and exposed anytime the rear hatch is open/up. I thought about making a video showing how it could peal and apple or watermelon skin. My right arm has a short 3/4" scrap (1st) and now an almost 3" long scrap that is taking its time to heal. If your skin touches those edges and has any amount of force it will scrape the skin. This happens during unloading if a package shifts while unloading. *tr

Can a Dodge Durango tow? Towing & payload

As an SUV, the Dodge Durango is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package.

What sets your Durango's tow & payload rating:

  • Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
  • Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
  • Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
  • Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.

Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
