How to read a Dodge Neon VIN — every digit explained

Every Dodge Neon carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Neon.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your Neon VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
  • Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

I purchased this dodge neon vehicle from dodge dealer st. Mtn ga in aug 1999-who transouth mortgage corp was the 2nd lender 6533 flying cloud dr eden prairie mn 55344 and bought the account before i could make my first payment. Plus dodge lied on the original contract and said i paid down so much money when i didnt and i had only a trade in a, ford esort. I took the car to mechanics who said the engine is no good, like the car had sat in a canel. I ask them to come get the car and they refused. They told me the bank will contact me to approve the loan we never spoke. We kept missing each other call. Then when i moved to fl 2001 they wanted to pick up the car then which they did by 3/02. In turn they sold the car for what i dont know. The deficiency is 11,703.42 after i paid 360 per mth over 9k. And now they sent it to collections agency which i sent dispute letters. *ak

I got my oil changed, tires rotated, and windshield wipers replaced on april 13 2011 around 6:30pm. My oil change took approximately 15 min. After the oil change and tire rotation, i paid and went straight home. I was not informed by anyone at valvoline that anything was wrong with my car. I got in my car around 7:40am on april 14th and headed towards my insurance company on asheville highway. As i entered onto business 85, my car started to smoke from under the hood and i could feel heat on my feet near the gas pedal and brake. As i tried to brake and slow the car down, something under the hood caught fire and the brakes failed to stop the car and the car ended up sliding into the back of a pick up truck and the hood and front end of the car completely burst into flames. The brakes on the car were replaced supposed have been replaced by the dealer before i purchased the car in december of 2010. Because of the incident, i sprain my wrist, dislocated my toe, and am without a vehicle. *tr

2003 Neon

Neon had to have the manual transmission replaced twice within the total milage of 20,000 miles. The car was delivered with a defective battery temperature sensor, and 1 month before the car caught fire it was in the shop and the mechanic failed to replace the battery tiedown bar. On august 26, 2004 the car caught fire while the ignition was off and was driven for only 5 miles. The vehicle also had a bad passanger seat belt buckle. Many passangers complained of it being difficult to insert the belt into the locking mechanism.*ak

2003 Neon

I was in a small collision at the speed of 10 mph or less. I rear ended a ford f150 truck because my brakes skided on the road, my 2003 neon fishtailed, and i hit the bumper of the truck. My right headlight was smashed, and my radiator was also broken. After 3 minutes my engine caught on fire, and my entire car was engulfed in fire within 5 minutes after the collision. My airbag on both driver and passenger side did not go off, i didn't hit the truck at a highspeed, yet my car went up in flames. Everything in the car was melted, and i think this car is very unsafe. Had i hit a truck or been hit by another large or small car, i hate to wonder what would of happened then. Would i of made it out in time before it caught on fire, or would it blow up on impact?! Neons are not safe, and i think this car will catch on fire at any speed. I have pictures of the car that shows the damage from the collision, and you wouldn't ever think the small damage could catch this car on fire.

2000 Neon

The air bags failed to deploy when the vehicle was involved in an accident which caused the vehicle to rollover 3 times, the engine did not shut off due to a faulty resistor, the consumer sustained a crushed t-6 vertabrae. Nlm

1997 Neon

Well lets see the first defect was a fan relay which was replaced 5 times before a wiring defect was found next we have "hard brakes" which contribuited to an accident which caused 7000 dollars in damage and 1 minor injury due to the fact that the air bags did not deploy, we follow that up with a leaky head gasket which chrysler was kind enough to return 1/2 of my out of pocket expenses along with wiring defects and air bags that don't come out other than the fact i have had more problems with this car than every other cars i have ever owned they made up for this lemon by having a bad customer service department too.

It was another sunday afternoon, we had just left church (me, my husband, and 2 year son and was on our way to see a friend and her newborn baby at the hospital. On our way to the hospital a truck pulled out from the access road from i-20 directly into our paths. We were traveling under 50 mph and had the right of way....all we could do to avoid the truck was to hit the brakes. Unfortunately, that was not sufficient. Our 2004 dodge neon struck a chevyrolet avalanche pick up. The impact was on the front passenger side where it completely destroyed the right front fender, grill, headlights, and the hood is now a rainbow over the engine. The ugliest part of this though, is that i was the passenger in the front seat, the passenger's air bag as well as the driver's air bag never deployed. In addition, the seat belt never locked, and i was thrown forward with the impact of the car. My forehead struck the windshield, then the dashboard in front of me. My chest also hit the dashboard, and my knees were forced up under the glove compartment area. Yes, i know this may sound minor with all the accidents that happen, and thank god it was. But i hate to know that this happened to me,and could more than likely happen to someone else, and they may not be as fortunate. I am now suffering from soreness in my chest and back, my knees are bruised, and i have severe whiplash in my neck. This incident has made me rethink the safety of the dodge neon, and i will now reconsider a much safer alternative for me and my family. *ak

In august of 1999, due to a health problem (unknown to me), i fell asleep at the wheel of my 1996 neon. I awoke in time to force the car over to a grassy median between two parts of a four lane highway. The car flew twenty or so feet in the air, making impact with the grass, and continuing without power steering, etc., for approximately. 300 feet. While in the air, my left arm broke the driver side window. When the car landed dead on to the grass, the air bags burst, but "wilted" down, they did not come straight out at me as normal, but down, after exploding. My mechanic informed me that this was not normal for a car in this kind of accident, and that the car may have been in a prior accident, or the air bags may have been improperly installed. I received chemical burns on the inner parts of the arms, and developed a lung problem due to the inhaled chemicals. Since the airbags exploded improperly, my two young daughters were frightened even more, especially since it sounded like a gun had been shot. My concern is that other air bags may react in the same way, even if there is no front impact. I had notified my mechanics in the ebensburg and cresson, pa areas, where the accident occurred, as well as the ambulance drivers, and any others i could about this situation. I also notified the hosts of car talk. I have not heard of this happening elsewhere, but i did notice that air bags were not mentioned on your website, and felt that it was important to notify the public of this potential problem.*jb

Body shop was surprised airbags did not deploy as the sensor was exposed and definitely hit. I'm kind of glad they didn't but after reviewing complaints this seems to be an issue. Finally. The wheels have been corroded since day one and there is no reason that the wheels should have done this let alone nearly immediately after purchase. Once again, dodge does nothing.
