How to read a Dodge Ram VIN — every digit explained
Every Dodge Ram carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Ram.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Ram VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Dodge ram 1500 year 2004 purchased brand new on march the vehicle had 22 miles on it when the accident occured it had approx. 10,000 miles. Proble defective axle and or rim. Note: previous tire blow out rim totaled and repaired that rim was placed on the truck and the tires rotation and that rim went to the left rear axle, tire is lost.
On august 1 2020, my 2 adult children and another passenger was in a crash and my truck flipped several times from front to back and all passengers were badly injured and not one of the air bags were deployed. The truck was hit from the passenger side causing the truck to air lift and flip.
Another single driver vehicle ran a stop sign and the single driver dodge hit the driver's door directly and deployed both front air bags and totaled both vehicles. The drivers air bag launched metal into the left wrist and forearm of the driver while his hands were in the 10 and 2 o'clock steering wheel positions. The left wrist lacerations and large hematoma required hospital care and left scars. The driver also suffered lower back damage requiring surgery. The truck was totaled in january 2014 and sent for salvage. On december 15, 2014 i received a chrysler safety recall (p40/nhtsa 14v-354) on the air bag inflators of the 2004 dodge ram 1500. The problem in the recall notice is described as; excessive internal pressure, during airbag deployment events, could result in an increased chance of occupant injury during certain crash conditions.

Car accident occurred when vehicles back cab hydroplaned and fishtailed out of control at less then 25mph and hit a tree head on. No airbag deployed and driver was hurt.
I was rear ended at a red light and my dash board sustained multiple fractures. Part of the dash board fractured and became airborne in the vehicle. It was the size of an iphone. There was also another part of the dashboard where a hole is present and the dash board is sunken in. Very disappointed with the quality and safety issues. Photos were forwarded to my attorney. *tr
My dash on my 2002 dodge ram has been falling apart and dropping into my vents. It is so bad i had to put carpet over it. Now i'm having heater repairs done on it. I called dodge and they won't do a thang about it. I have kids and both of them have cut themselves on the sharp pieces on the dash. I had to take one to the dr. Dodge needs to fix this on all the truck dashes now. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 dodge ram model r35. The contact was driving 5 mph when smoke emitted inside of the vehicle and flames were visible from the hood. The failure caused the contact to drive into a ditch but there was no crash. The doors failed to open during the failure so the contact escaped by punching and shattering the windshield. The vehicle was towed to a private mechanic where the mechanic confirmed that the power disruption caught fire. The manufacturer was contacted. The vehicle was destroyed. The failure and the current mileages were 50,000.
I have a 2002 dodge pickup with a cracked dash. I had to replace the heater core and when the dash was removed i noticed cracks all in the dash. While removing the dash i and my helper both sustained severe cuts from very sharp edges of the broken dash. This prompted me to file this complaint because of the nature and shape of the cracks can cause severe injury or even death to occupants, especially children,in the event of a crash as well as cuts and abrasions when simply entering and exiting the vehicle. *tr

This is the third airbag failure i have reported to this agency. All of these vehicle's whose air bag failed were late model sport utility vehicles of pick up trucks. Each vehicle was involved in a right angle collision at speeds of 45+ mph. Each vehicle sustained severe contact damage to the entire front end. In each case the air bags did not deploy. I am employed as an accident reconstructionist for the scottsdale police department in scottsdale arizona. Please feel free to contact me with any questions which you may have.
Tl* the contact owned a 2003 dodge ram 1500. While the contact's fiance was driving 50 mph, he swerved to avoid a skunk and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle crashed into a ditch and rolled over multiple times. All the air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed. The driver sustained injuries to his ribs, left leg, right knee, and head. The other two front seat passengers sustained bruises and cuts. The rear passenger side occupant sustained cuts and bruises. The rear middle seat passenger was ejected out the back driver's side window. All the passengers were transported to the hospital via ambulance. The contact mentioned that the two front passenger seat belts were latched. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot and then the insurance company towed it to their local tow lot where it was considered a total loss. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.*dt photos attached *jb
Was in a head on collision with the side of a chevy blazer at approx. 50 mph. No air bag deployment on my vehicle, and my wife was ejected out of the passengers window.
While driving on narrow road air bags in steering wheel and passenger side dash started to activate before i could get off road and stop they exploded and i was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle. This accident was investigated by chrysler two different reps and findings were never released to the authorities. Chrysler was requested at two different times to release this info and never did. Thus i was charged with "left of center" violation. There were some critical injuries to multiple people and no deaths praise god. *tr

On 9/1/2003 at approximately 8:40 p.m. My son was driving our 2001 dodge ram pick-up on us 23 south between omer, michigan and standish, michigan. I was in the passenger seat in the front and my husband was in the back seat. All of a sudden there was a loud screeching noise and we went into the oncoming lane of northbound traffic. My son kept saying he could not control the truck. He was able to get the truck back in the southbound lanes and the truck kept fishtailing. All of a sudden the truck took a very hard right and we went through the ditch with coattails into the farm field and rolled the truck. When we stopped moving and we were all out of the truck some people who stopped, we asked them what happened and they said all they saw was headlights flying in the air and it looked like we lost a tire. With the police there he asked my son if he had fallen asleep my son said no that all of a sudden he could not control the truck. The police then thought we had a flat tire but upon looking for the tire in the farm field it was discovered that the back drivers side wheel had broke at the axle right at the spindle. All lug nuts and brake pads were still intact inside of the wheel and it was not flat. Also where the axle broke off the wheel the metal was shining and crackling. None of us, luckily, were seriously injured scraps, bruises, and a lot of pulled muscles. None of us went to the hospital. We do felt lucky that it happened where it did since 10 more minutes up the road we would have been on i-75 south in holiday traffic and things i am sure would have been different. We do feel and with anyone we have talked with that this was a manufacturer defect of poor metal not being heat treated correctly. *la

While stopping at a traffic light the consumer heard a breaking sound from the rear left side, but didn't think it came from her vehicle. Two hours later, the noise occurred again, but louder. The vehicle immediately started spinning in the left direction until it crashed into a ditch and hit a concrete barrier while spinning driver's door opened, and the seat connection in the middle broke. This was a bench seat. The driver's side slid forward, and the passenger's side slid backwards. When vehicle was picked up the rental store mechanic determined that the rear axle broke. *ak *sc
While reverse parking at approximately 10 mph; the accelerator stuck to bottom of vehicle floor (sending vehicle to speed exceeding 70 mph) and it accelerated out of control. In an attempt to stop and avoid hitting pedestrians and building behind me; i hit the brakes, but the brakes would not stop the vehicle. I was forced to place the vehicle in park shift position while hitting brake, in order to stop vehicle. At first the shift control stopped in 'd' and the vehicle shot forward, but i kept hitting the brakes. And eventually; i managed to get it in the park position and it stopped the vehicle. *tr

My truck is not equipped with the park break release safety feature, and i want to know why? The last truck i owned before this was a 1996 cherolet and it had it , and my moms 2000 model chevrolet truck, pickup has it as does my dads 97 model ford pick-up. But without me knowing it i found out that my 1999 dodge truck does not have it, but all the chrysler cars are equpiped with it. Not only did i not know that it didn't have it , but also the police officer that worked my accident, and 3 dodge dealers did not know this. As a result of my pickup not having this safety feature my grandmother, 4 year old son and myself were in an accident involving a semi-truck. I parked in a lot of a store and left my grandmother and son in the truck only to realize that i had forgot my purse. I came back for it on the passenger side, and ask them to hand it to me, it was on the dash, and when my son pulled it off, it hit the gear shift and went into reverse into the highway , and was struck by a on coming loaded semi-truck. Fortuantly we was not killed , but i was hanging on to the truck trying to stop it, and did get some pulled muscles, and granny got a whiplash. My point is this is very dangerous. If these trucks are not supposed to have this feature they need it, for gods sake before someone is killed. Why does the fords and chevy trucks have this ,and the dodge truck doesnt. Please help me!!! And many others before something terrible happens.. You should have to press the break to get these vehicles into gear.!! If its good for one why not the other. It can't be that much more expensive because the rest of them have it, and their no more higher than the rest. Thank you tracy williams please take this into consideration, and let me know something if possible. *ak
We purchased a 1998 dodge conversion van as our family vehicle. On sept 21,2000 my wife loaded our children, ages 7,6, & 2, into the vehicle. She then went & locked the house door. Our 2 year old got out of her car seat, went to the front of the van, & pulled down on the gear shift pulling it into gear. The vehicle rolled over a 3 foot wall, down a steep hill, through a 2 foot ditch, and then struck a telephone pole. Thank goodness no one was seriously injured, but this condition could have tragic. I own an insurance agency so i started to check around to see if this was a defect that the vehicle could be put into gear without first applying the brake. What i found out was shocking, i was informed by the dodge dealer that this safety feature was an option on this vehicle, which i was not informed of at time of purchase , this is ludicrous!!! In my research i have yet to find a private passenger vehicle that is not equipped with this safety feature and to declare it an option on a family use vehicle is irresponsible. Thank goodness the lord was looking over my family that day, but what about the next family. Please look into this situation, so no family has to needlessly endure a tragedy.*ak

While applying urgent braking at full pedal force due to another vehicle changing lanes in front of the vehicle at a much lower speed, the abs system failed to function, causing the vehicle to skid for two to three seconds over an unknown distance. After approximately two to three seconds applying full force to the brake pedal and skidding, the pedal suddenly released all resistance against the driver's foot and was able to become fully-depressed against the floorboard/firewall of the vehicle. At the moment of the event, the vehicle gave a violent shudder and all braking power was lost. The vehicle continued forward without brakes until striking another vehicle and coming to a full stop, resulting in multiple injuries and a total loss of the vehicle. Post-collision, the vehicle's brake pedal was able to be pressed completely to the floorboard/firewall of the vehicle with very little resistance. The approximate speed when braking was initiated was between 45 and 50 miles per hour. Police responding to the collision estimated that the vehicle was traveling at approximately 15 miles per hour at the final point of collision with the second vehicle involved according to the police report. *js

The dashboard get destroy to easly and the debries flies to the face making drive insecure because the plastic parts were hiting the face. The powers train gets very easly damage by rocks and debris on the street making it to vulnerable to get destroy (and that happen to me) . The charging regulator gets brokes for nothing anytime and you need to be changing the computer or ading an external one and solder it to the principal cables that goes to the alternator, and relays.

My 1995 dodge ram 1500 burnt up-totaled-2 years ago. Dealer did not, would not, do the recall in 3 years of access. Not finding any reference from chrysler or you, i suggest having talked to a mechanic 2 days ago, there are still many trucks burning up, with or without the recall, therefore there needs a new campaign, but also check into the toxicity of the situation. It is melting and burning pvc's and other plastics, very toxic and cancer causing. I am fighting terminal cancer also, proven to be linked to the dioxins, heavy metals, and vinyl chlorides found in melting and incinerating pvc's. While it might not be considered your function, the proper agency needs to be informed since these are controlled substances when incinerated or burned, and per the toxic substance control act and the sara laws and the 'public's right to know', chrysler should have informed of the dangers and risk factors associated with the melting and incinerating of the pvc's and other plastics when using the blower on high, and/or the steering wheel column or the wiring in the dash is overheating grossly. *nm

On 7-16-03 i was a restrained passenger in a dodge ram 1500 4x4 quad cab. We were returning from a short trip to the store. While driving on a perfectly straight dry road, with completely clear visibility at approx 3 pm afternoon with very light traffic we unexpectedly felt a hard bump, as if we had hit a pot hole. It was so hard i was thrown forward in my seat. The driver immediately yelled that the steering had locked. He was also trying desperately to hit the brakes, but they too were not working. The driver struggled with all his might to try and gain control of the vehicle, but wasn't able too. We drove directly into the lane of oncoming traffic. We then left the lane and proceeded into a parking area of a convenience store, where we struck a parked vehicle. After striking the parked vehicle we were redirected back into the lane of oncoming traffic. It was at that time we were struck head on by a semi truck. The semi drove completely over the passenger side of the dodge truck crushing me inside and rolling the semi. The police report states that the front passenger wheel was found several hundred yards away from the scene of the wreck. In the area we noted the initial bump. The vehicle was investigated and it was found the front passenger ball joint had been broken completely in half; however, the investigated stated that the damage was too severe to make a determination as to whether the ball joint failed before, or was broken during the collision. There was approximately 5 seconds between the failure to control the vehicle and the collision. Something failed on that vehicle rendering it uncontrollable. I do have the vehicle in my possession, and it is available for any further investigation. Dodge has shown no interest what so ever in investigating this possible mechanical failure. I will spend the rest of my life trying to recover from the injuries i incurred from this accident. *jb

The dealer calls the bounce at 65 mph "normal". I informed them that the 2 times i have taken my son on the freeway in the truck he has thrown up... They said "normal"! Know this; the engineers know what the company did, the company knows, i know, and now you know. Go and complain to your dealer, it's the only way this will go to a service bulletin. On another note, there is a service bulletin to get your rotors replaced for free, they grab incorrectly and cause the shuttering that warps rotors.*ak
Engine And Engine Cooling 768 Read
Engine failure. On several occasions the engine would stall upon acceleration. My 2004 dodge ram 1500 stalled on me after driving onto a patch of ice causing my steering wheel to become difficult to steer and the truck started sliding down an icy street, off the road and down a mountain until it came to a stop on a tree. Since the truck stalled and i was not able to restart it in time. The truck is now a total loss. The frame bent in the front drivers area of the truck, the steering became lose and the back passenger quarter panel is damaged which will not allow the tail gate to come down. *tr
The factory undercoating was put so heavy and sloppy that when the engine exhaust system heats up the undercoating drips on the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe "flashing" causing hazardous fumes to enter the cab of the vehicle thru the air condition ducts. I requested a "material safety data sheet" for the applied undercoating from the dealership but haven't received anything to date. The fumes entering the truck are suspected carcinogens and could have long term affects.
I have an 04 dodge ram 1500 hemi, while driving the truck at any given time truck just shuts down completely.i have taken it back to the dealer several times and nothing was done to solve the problem.now last week i was driving up the street the truck shut off one more time causing me to hit a guide rail.i feel the truck is very unsafe to drive and personally dont want it anymore.
Consumer was driving at 40-45 mph when suddenly motor froze, and vehicle started to pull to left/ lost all steering capability/hit a concrete divider ,and then vehicle rolled over . Consumer noticed that of one of screws that held power steering to frame fell off, and it got stuck between wheel and frame which contributed to crash, causing injuries. *ak
While driving the vehicle completely shuts down without warning, causing loss of steering control and brake failure, which resulted in a collision in which the air bags did not deploy. Electrical system failure caused accident. Chrysler refuses to find the problem or provide a replacement vehicle, as does dealer. *ak *ml *tt
The vehicle caught on fire near the engine compartment. The source is unknown. *ak
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 10 mph through the woods, the underbody skid plate collected massive amounts of road debris which caused a fire underneath the vehicle. This was determined after the contact observed large amounts of smoke and flames from underneath both sides of the underbody. The vehicle was driven to a nearby water hose where the fire was extinguished. There were no injuries were sustained. There was minor fire damage sustained to the remaining underbody and shield. After an extended period of time, the vehicle was driven to the dealer for further inspection who determined the original equipment skid plate on the vehicle was designed by another manufacturer for another type of vehicle. The manufacturer was alerted. A diagnostic test showed a fault with the evaporative emission system. Updated 09/05/06. *jb
Dt: the contact stated after the vehicle was parked for eleven hours he turned the key in the ignition and heard a loud backfire noise coming from the engine. The passenger compartment filled with smoke , and he exited the vehicle. The parking attendant extinguished the fire and there was minimal fire damage. Eleven days later the vehicle was towed to the insurance company's salvage lot. Upon inspection the insurance company determined it was a mechanical problem. The vehicle was towed to a dodge dealership, and although the dealership stated the vehicle needed to be taken apart to correctly diagnose it, the dealership claimed that the intake manifold exploded. No repairs have been made. *ak updated 2/7/2006 - *nm

Can a Dodge Ram tow? Towing & payload
As a pickup, the Dodge Ram is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package.
What sets your Ram's tow & payload rating:
- Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
- Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
- Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
- Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.
Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
