How to read a Dodge Stratus VIN — every digit explained
Every Dodge Stratus carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Stratus.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Stratus VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Risk. If this condition occurs simultaneously without engaging the primary latch, the hood would not be restrained increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Fix. Dealers will replace the secondary hood latch spring with a longer end hook spring.
Fuel System, Gasoline:delivery:fuel Pump
What's wrong. Certain tigas fuel pump modules manufactured between june 1 and september 24, 2006, sold under various brand names and p/nos. These fuel pump modules are sold as aftermarket for use in certain daimlerchrysler vehicles listed above. Silicone material used in manufacture of the flapper valve was out-of-specification, leading to excess swell of the flapper valve restricting the flow of fuel to the fuel pump module.
Risk. Fuel restriction could result in loss of power and/or engine stall, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash.
Fix. Ti automotive will notify owners and replace the defective fuel pump modules free of charge. The recall began on october 6, 2006. Owners may contact ti automotive toll-free at 1-877-461-1834.

Suspension:front:control Arm:lower Arm
What's wrong. Federal-mogul is recalling certain replacement control arm assemblies, part numbers k7425, 10945, fa4510x, k7427, 10946, and fa4611x, sold for use on various passenger vehicles listed above. The ball joint on the control arm assembly can fail causing the ball stud to wear through the control arm housing resulting in noise and/or separation of the ball stud from the housing.
Risk. If there is a separation of the ball stud from the housing, the driver can loose steering control, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash.
Fix. Federal-mogul will notify owners of record and replace the affected control arms free of charge. The safety recall began on january 28, 2011. Owners may contact federal-mogul at 1-877-489-6659.
Suspension:front:control Arm:lower Ball Joint
What's wrong. Qualis automotive is recalling certain aftermarket ball joints sold for use on certain passenger vehicles. The socket may have been excessively hardened which could cause it to crack near the retaining ring groove allowing the ball stud to separate under impact load. The subject ball joints were sold as four part numbers, d10945, d10946, g10945, and g10946. The affected control arms, d10945 and d10946, are stamped with the following dates on the ball joints: 134308, 135708, 100109, 102709, 104109, 105509, 107609, 108909, 110309, 113209, and 116609. The g10945 and g10946 are the same part as the d10945 and d10946 respectively. They are labeled differently depending on the aftermarket customer.
Risk. Separation of the ball stud from the socket of the ball joint housing would allow the control arm to collapse and the wheel to fold in causing loss of steering control, possibly resulting in a crash.
Fix. Qualis automotive will replace the ball joints free of charge. The safety recall began on november 9, 2009. Owners may contact qualis automotive at 1-800-493-4128.
1995 Dodge Stratus recalls 11
Service Brakes, Hydraulic:antilock/traction Control/electronic Limited Slip
What's wrong. Corrosion of the abs hydraulic control unit can cause the solenoid valves to stick in the open position.
Risk. If either front wheel valve sticks, the vehicle would swerve from a straight stop when the brakes are applied.
Fix. Dealers will install a plate and silicone grease injected into the solenoid cavity to eliminate the potential for this condition.
Power Train:automatic Transmission:park/neutral Start Interlock Switch
What's wrong. Vehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. The adjustment of the cable connecting the console shifter mechanism to the ignition key can cause a trapped key condition which can result in a low force required to depress the shift button. A combination of applying a mis-adjusted release button with a low force attempt to shift out of park with the key in the locked position, can break the connecting pin in the shifter.
Risk. If this happens, the "ignition-park" interlock system will be nonfunctional.
Fix. Dealers will inspect for proper operation of the system. Any vehicles that are not functional after the inspection will have the shift mechanism and cable replaced with a "self-adjusting" design.
Engine And Engine Cooling:engine:gasoline
What's wrong. In certain vehicles, the engine cylinder head oil galley plug does not seal properly and engine cylinder head oil is not adequately retained.
Risk. Inadequate sealing and retention of the plug can result in oil leakage which could cause a fire in the engine compartment.
Fix. Dealers will install an expansion plug and retaining bracket over the cylinder head oil galley plug.
Service Brakes, Hydraulic:foundation Components:master Cylinder
What's wrong. The brake master cylinder can leak brake fluid due to a damaged double lip rear piston seal.
Risk. Brake fluid leakage can result in diminished effectiveness of one half of the split brake system. The instrument panel warning light(s) will signal system impairment prior to partial brake system loss.
Fix. Dealers will replace the rear brake master cylindr piston assembly.
Seat Belts:front:anchorage
What's wrong. Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The rear seat belt anchor does not achieve the loading required by fmvss no. 210, "seat belt assembly anchorages."
Risk. Failure of a seat belt anchor can result in the loss of seat belt protection, which could lead to serious injury or death in the event of a crash.
Fix. Dealers will inspect the rear seat belt outboard anchor floor attachments for proper positioning. If the anchor was improperly oriented, the orientation will be corrected.
Suspension:front:control Arm:lower Ball Joint
What's wrong. Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The lower control arm ball joint can separate due to loss of lubrication.
Risk. Separation of the ball joint could cause a loss of steering control increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Fix. Dealers will inspect the ball joint end housing cover seal for leakage with a high pressure air tester and the rubber boot will be visually inspected for damage. If the cover seal leaks or the boot is damaged, the lower control arm will be replaced.
Power Train:automatic Transmission:lever And Linkage:floor Shift
What's wrong. On certain passenger vehicles, the floor shifter ignition-park interlock may fail and allow the shifter to be moved out of the park position with the key removed. An inoperative interlock may also allow the key to be removed when the shifter has not been placed in the park position.
Risk. Either circumstance may result in the vehicle rolling away without warning.
Fix. Dealers will install a new load-limiting push rod into the floor shifter lever of the affected vehicles. Owner notification began on june 14, 2004. Owners should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

After driving my car a friend went outside and seen smoke coming out from under the hood.she called me and i ran to the car and i seen fire under the front wheel's. Friends sprayed water on the hood and i opened it up a little and they sprayed the fire and put it out. By this time the top of the motor was burnt bad. Everything on top needs to be replaced, it was caused by the high pressure hose on the powersteering. I found out that it had a recall on the hose so i called dodge corp. And they gave me a case # and to take it to my dealer so i did. Then the corp. Office called me today and said it's been to long this should have been done by the last owner and hung up. I bought this car oct.14 of this year and this happened on the 31. How am i to know that this was going to happen in 18 day's. I paid a lot of money for this car and i think. The computer can tell you the recall and how to get it fixed; but you try to find somewhere on here on what to do when there is a recall and it done what it said it would do and you didn't know about it until it did it. I need help i don't have the money to fix it. I took out a loan to get it. *tr
Service Brakes 371 Read
Accident occurred due to failure of the brakes. While driving northbound on knights road in bensalem, a car (2 cars ahead of me)slammed on their brakes to make a left hand turn. The mini-van that was directly in front of me also stopped suddenly. As i approached, i slowed down to a stop. The mini-van started to proceed around the vehicle. I then took my foot off the brake to also go around the vehicle, however the mini-van stopped suddenly again. At this point i placed my foot on the brake pedal and it went to the floor. My car rolled into the mini-van. My insurance paid out approximatly $1500.00 in damage to fix their bumper. I am now however going through a lawsuit for bodily damage. After the accident occurred i contacted chrysler. They sent an inspector out to check my brakes at the dealership. The result was they found nothing wrong with my brakes and that i need to learn how to drive a car with anti-lock brakes. This infuriated me for it is not the first car i have had with anti-lock brakes and i never had a problem before with any other car. This accident was not the first time that the brakes failed on this car. Several incidents occurred previous where i would turn into a driveway or parking lot and suddenly loose my brakes for a few minutes. After i took my car to the dealership for the inspection, i haven't had any further problems with the brakes. I was never informed whether any adjustments were made to fix the problem or if it is just a coincedance. Since i've had this car there has been at least 4 recalls on various things. I lease the vehicle and when i contacted the dealership because i didn't feel safe driving it, there was nothing that i could do except ot buy out the lease which i couldn't afford.

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 dodge stratus. While driving at an unknown speed, the brakes failed in the contact's vehicle. He had to pump the brake pedal twice to stop the vehicle, but by then he had rear ended the preceding vehicle. He was not injured badly, but is very sore. A police report was filed. The front end of the vehicle was crushed and was towed to a collision center. The dealer and manufacturer have not yet been notified. The failure mileage was 64,000.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 35mph on a winding road, curving right, the steering wheel jerked and the vehicle turned left. The brakes seemed stiff when applied. The vehicle hit a fence and the driver sustained severe injuries. The airbags did not deploy, although seat belts were worn. A police report was filed. The vehicle was deemed totaled by the insurance agency, but no determination was made as to why the airbags failed to deploy. However, the insurance agency did determine the accident may have been cause by a steering or brake problem.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge stratus. The contact stated that while driving at 20 mph, the right front wheel suddenly broke off. The vehicle was towed to a body shop where the contact was informed that the ball joint was not lubed at the factory which caused the wheel to break off. The contact felt that the failure was related to recall 09e056000 (suspension: front: control arm lower ball joint). The vin was unavailable at the time of the complaint. The current and failure mileages were approximately 78,000.
2001 dodge stratus. Loss of control. Resulting in 2 separate crashes. I did sustain injury in the last incident. I was trying to turn left into a parking lot, wheel turned only partially. I could not get it to move the correct direction, and i ran into a tall (15in.) curb. Sustained whiplash and a large knot on my head. The 1st incident was while trying to turn left and my car would not go that way. I ended up hitting yet another tall curb, due to loss of control. It may be worthy to note i have replaced the lower control arm on the drivers side, but am still getting periods of having a hard time turning my wheel. This occurs whether in motion or just starting my car and turning the wheel to leave . I also had to replace right side due to failure of the wheel to turn right as well. I actually was going about 30mph and barely made my turn, almost broadsiding a sitting vehicle. When i checked it, my tire was "bent inward' at the top. The whole tire was, well, like this, / (but actually bent the other way, inward. My steering wheel works randomly. Please advise, as this is my only mode of transportation. I don't know what else to have fixed on it! I've already dipped almost $2000 "fixing" it. Thank you. The incident date below is just the latest. The one where i hit my head. As of today, my steering has a mind of its own. *tr
I have taken my 2000 dodge durango to forest lake dodge dealer for a clunking noise in my front end over year ago. I had a number of complaints. They said at that time there was nothing wrong. They couldn't hear anything. Again within a couple months i returned with the same problem along with my passenger window not going up or down correctly. Once again they said oh you need shocks and you need your service of warrenty proformed or your warrently wont be any good, so i said yes do what is under warrenty nothing else unless i say it ok, will more work was proformed and i ended up paying hundred plus dollars out of pocket. Again they said there was no clucking noise noted and that the passenger window according to the computer said it functions correctly. Will to this day over a year later, the cluck is there and shocks and other maintence was completed, the passenger window moves so slow that we dont use it as it has and still does quit working. Inside where the 4 wheel drive compotent also comes loose from the main floor. I was told that i would have to purchase a new manto which screws to the frame of the durango. I had side steps put on after purchase by chry. Dodge in forrest lake and drivers side within in one and half years fell loose and they said i just needed to have someone put in new screws that it wasn;t covered. Yet when i purchased them they said that if they did it, anything that may happen would be covered but if someone else did it they wouldnt cover anything that happened.*ak
L999 dodge durango upper and or lower ball joint failures on four different occasions over a four year period. Upper and lower ball joints used as original manufacturer installed and replacement parts are known to be deficient according to nhtsa, and accidents as well as expensive replacement costs have occured. I am now in my fourth replacement cycle, with upper ball joints having been replaced three times and the lowers now in their second time. Nhtsa has failed to include l998 and l999 model years, allowing daimler chrysler to slip the noose regarding responsibility for the same defective parts used in 2000-2004 my vehicles. Nhtsa should require dodge to include l998, l999 model years in its recall investigation. Dodge customer service rejected my two separate appeals for replacement or reimbursement, one in 2003 and the other in 2004 parts failure dates were 12/27/01, 12/27/03, april '04 and on 12/l8/04.*ak
While driving forward at about 25-30 mph, the steering locked to the right, right side fell down and pulled car severely to the right. There was no steering, no control. Air bags deployed, pulled car up a curb into a fire hydrant then another 25 feet into a pole. Car is a total loss. The front end parts are all in tact, only the lower control arm is cracked which caused the wheel to turn completely to the right. Everything was inspected on vehicle and there is not any other explanation or evidence prior to the curb than the lower control arm. The car lost control causing further damage. *nm
Hi! My son was driving my 2006 dodge stratus and the control arm broke and the axle separated on the passenger side causing it to hit a parked car. We have a police report that documents the axle separation and pictures are available. I noticed online that this had been a problem with the 2006 dodge stratus so i checked for recalls but our vin was not part of the recall (10e059000). My husband went to the dealership who sold me the car and he called dodge customer service but apparently there was nothing that can be done. My car can not be repaired. In the past the car's front end had been repaired a number of times and it was due for an inspection this month.
I was driving down the high way when i heard a bang and the car pulled me hard into the medium at 75 miles an hour. I totaled my car. This is the second time the ball joint has sheared off causing the tire to jam in to the fender. First time i was able to get of the road and it was on the driver side of the vehicle. This time it was on the left side of the vehicle. My 3 young kids where in the back seat and could have been seriously injured. Something needs to be done. *tr
The vehicle was purchased in 2013 " as is" (used) f rom a car lot. There were at least 2 or 3 alignments completed due to repairs on related parts. After each alignment, the steering wheel would turn to an angled position after a few days or a week. When turning the steering wheel to the right or turning it to the right while backing up in reverse, a loud pop can be heard coming from the vehicle. The noise has always seemed to come from the left side of the car. Everything suggested as repairs has been done. Both ball joints were replaced. All front and back struts were replaced. Also there has been a problem with the suspension causing noise and bouncing while driving. All of this has happened on city streets, driving about 35 mph or much less. A mechanic suggested in 2013 that the car might have an electrical problem but almost everything has worked well for the past 4 years with no problems except for the windshield wiper speed which does not work on the regular back and forth and super fast speed. The wiper switch was replaced which didn't help. A dodge dealership checked it last week and said that the wiper motor works. Only one of many auto repair places tried to charge me for an elec issue. Also in 2013, the first car repair shop i took it to did not detect any recalls and they listed a different vin # which is:[xxx], on my paperwork. A dealership told me it was not valid when i contacted it for parts. A different vin # is on the car title which is in my name. Could this car be part of a chop shop scam? I've had a problem trying to find parts that match the color and year especially for an inside door panel. Also i filed police reports because someone has entered the car repeatedly and illegally without forced entry and may have a key. The seller of the car was dishonest when the car was purchased. *tr

I purchased a 200 dodge stratus es in jan 2001 from a toyota of new orleans dealer. After purchase, i started having recurring problem with the vehicle. Brakes, heating system replaced, brake drums. At this moment something called sway link bars have gone bad on the car. I had a accident in april 2002 but according to the dodge dealer in gretna louisiana the accident had nothing to do with the problem i've had or having with the car. I notified the chrysler company of my problem and was told that this car was not on the recall list. It should be. I'm having continuous problem with the brakes as swell. This does not make sense being that the vehicle is of a new model. *la

On two separate crashes car came out of park and into reverse. First time broke mirror off of drivers door, thought maybe didn't have it all the way in park until one week later car was in park got out while car was running with two passengers inside after about 5 minutes with me standing in the door car kicked out of park and into reverse running me down. Door got stuck in dirt and bend backwards crushing the fender. Called one dodge dealer and they denied there being a recall on the transmission and was told it was impossible for car to kick out of park and into reverse. Called a second dealer and was told yes there had been a recall and he looked up my vin # and said my car had been repaired. My husband said that it was possible to take car out of park and into reverse without the key being in and unlocked. Car can also be bumped into neutral while driving on highway. *jb

I own a 2003 dodge stratus sxt sedan 2.4l. When i bought the car i happened to notice that there was rusting on the axles & brakes to the front end of the car. The second day i had the car it completely shut itself down and wouldn't start, immediately my car dealership picked up the car and said it was because the battery "died". I did not take note of the rusting because the dealership said "all dodge cars are rusted...*all*"a month later my car started making noises to the front end of the car slightly, then it was progressing towards january with vibration of the car past 50 mph, i decided to call the dealership when it became out of hand and they were closed, then the monday the car shut itself down and the steering wheel locked into place while i was turning a corner and it hit probably a 5 inch high curb..of course the "rusted" right front end "axle", control bar & gear controls broke off. Found it interesting that all of these incidents i had to pay out of pocket for because this dealership says in other words that we're lying and it isn't their fault nor was it a mechanical defect. Also i have noted that my doors doesn't close properly & my windows slip out of place. After the incident of my car locking up and my axle being broken i had to take out of pocket once again $1,800 and they fixed it..but there was still problems..the vibration was still there and now there was a knocking/cracking sound to the front & rear ends of the car, and i mean it was loud..took the car back for the oil change and they said they heard nothing nor was there a vibration!.a month later i took the car back i said this was ridiculous that this noise is still there and yes of course when you have a huge brawl and fight they do find the so called "problem"....the pins to hold my brake pads in place weren't even there!...and vibration again? None to be found...yes i am the driver and the vibration is still there.*jb

Driving on a 35 mph road going across the cross road got hit by a truck doing about 70 mph. Hit on the passenger side front bumper to the back edge truck f the front passenger tire. Put into a spin then was hit in the rear passenger tire and bumper. No air bags came out with massive trauma to both myself as driver and my passenger. Police, ambulance and doctors asked why the air bags did not expand. If the air bags would of worked less injuries would of happened. We had just stopped at a stop sign and proceeded to cross the road at like about 15 mph when hit.
While driving 50mph noticed cow in road, slammed on brakes to avoid hitting cow, but hit the cow. Upon impact with the cow, neither air bag deployed. Entire right front was damaged. First complaint...on more than one occasion on wet roadways i would begin to slow down farther behind than normal for my stop or turn. Every single time my breaks locked up on me and i slid. A couple of times almost ended in a collision. I was involved in an accident dealing with a train. When i stopped the train hit the front end of my car. It pulled off my bumper, hood, radiator, coolant each landing at least 75 feet away. It also twisted my engine, transmission, bent my frame, and rear axle. All the while my battery blew up. Out of all of that my air bags did not deploy. *nm
