How to read a Ducati Multistrada VIN — every digit explained

Every Ducati Multistrada carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Multistrada.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your Multistrada VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
  • Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Service Brakes 57% 28 Read
2022 Multistrada

Rear brake performance is erratic as a function of the unpredictable distance the pedal has to move to be effective.

2020 Multistrada

Rear brake is vaguely responsive even with aggressive pressure.

2020 Multistrada

The rear brake seems to be ineffective compared to other Ducati models I've owned. This condition has lead to depending on the front brakes more than the standard 70% due to the rears not performing their part. This has caused (In my humble opinion) the fronts to warp causing pulsing in the front brakes. This was noted with fewer than 1200 miles when first service was performed. Dealer noted nothing abnormal other then the sound of a horn (sounds like a trumpet) while rolling the bike at a walking pace. This issue became worse as I made my way across the country from San Fran to Sarasota Florida. Upon arrival with 3500 miles there is a notable pulsing from the front brake lever. Euro Cycles of Tampa took the bike in for warranty noting 6-9 thousandths runout. Ducati was provided this information and in return said I quote "Rotors are excluded from the Ducati Limited Warranty Policy". Under normal circumstances I can understand this policy but I believe there is an under lying issue being over looked here. If you look on any forum online there are numerous complaints of this very issue on the Multistrada from 2015-2020. Some of which Ducati "decided" to cover and some like mine they did not. For everyone coming after me I'd love to know what the root cause is. Oh By the way this is my 30th+ yr riding and probably 15th or 16th motorcycle and I've never had to replace rotors due to warping.

2019 Multistrada

Rear brake becomes ineffective after a period of time. The brake becomes soft, spongy and does not work properly. I've had the dealer check the brakes, bleed them, replaced the fluid and it will work ok for a short time but then the problem returns. The pedal needs a lot of pressure to actuate the rear brake and eventually it doesn't really work at all.

2019 Multistrada

The motorcycle's rear brake is almost non-existent. Very "mushy" when the pedal is pressed and you must press very hard to get the calipers to bite the rotor. This is very noticeable during low speed riding.

2019 Multistrada

Rear brake is weak, sometimes faulty, sometimes demanding too much pressure to start acting and it doesn't brake strong enough.

2018 Multistrada

I was riding for around 4 hours on the interstate. I came off the interstate and onto the surface streets. I was entering a park with a dirt road and parking lot. I went to apply the rear brake for stopping on dirt. The rear brake lever cycled through the entire stroke. I pumped the rear brake lever and no pressure was built up. I had to use the front brake to stop on the dirt. After visiting the park about 20 minutes the bike was ridden to a gas station and the rear brake still failed to work. The bike was then ridden to a local hotel still with no rear brake. The next morning i tested the rear brake before leaving for the day. The rear brake had normal pressure and a very short lever stroke and would stop the wheel (center stand). After riding on the interstate for 2 hours i pulled off for gas and the brake would not engage. Since returning home from my trip i have experienced the same thing repeatedly, bike cold rear brake works, bike hot no rear brake.

2016 Multistrada

Was riding yesterday and the rear brake does not work at all. The rear brake is non-functional. This been an issue since new and the dealer says this is a known problem but nothing can be done to fix the issue.

2016 Multistrada

Have had to have the brakes bleed twice a year since purchasing .rear brake fades and is almost non existent, worse as the bike heats up numerous times have been to the dealer and have been told this is normal for a ducati.i do not feel safe , and dread the day when i really need them.

2016 Multistrada

I had been riding down the freeway for around 50 min and the motorcycle had been all ok. I tried to apply the front brakes and nothing happened. I managed to somehow stop without incident using the rear brake. When i pulled over i found the from brake line had completely failed on the right hand side.

2022 Multistrada

After 4000 miles the vehicle developed a severe"Stumbling" or misfiring like behavior. It was taken to one dealer and the charcoal canister of the evaporative emission system was full of fuel. The factory technician was unable to repair the problem and it was taken to another dealer where the emission system was replaced. The problem has been undiagnosed and still continues and makes the vehicle un rideable and unsafe. Ducati has been negligent and providing a solution to the problem and I feel the vehicle is unsafe to ride due to the fact of the inconsistent throttle making it unmanageable and I believe there is potential for a fire risk due to the excess fuel being dumped into the system. I can intermittently smell raw fuel and believe there may be a fire risk as well. Several attempts have been taken to have it diagnosed at two different dealers and Ducati has been unresponsive as to any personal request for assistance.

2022 Multistrada

Coasting to a stop and the engine shuts off. Bogging in low gears . Very dangerous in that my motorcycle stalled out 3 times on a major highway when coming up on a traffic jam. I'm contacting the dealer today to report issue. There were no warning lights before the engine shut down. I have over 30 years experience riding motorcycles of different brands and types and had never had this happen.

2020 Multistrada

Engine cutting off while in neutral. Engine shutdown also when downshifting from 2nd to 1st and holding in clutch. similar to many other ducati owners. Very dangerous as engine cut off is affecting my ability to control and distracting from riding properly. Only have 5500 miles on it. Happens every ride now and I can reproduce it fairly easily.

2020 Multistrada

When the throttle is off, the revs go down to 0 then bounce back up to idle (most of the time anyway, if it doesn't stall). This happens when I am coming to a stop, downshifting to first/neutral. It is very distracting and with ambient road noise, if you are not paying attention, will catch you offguard and will leave you trying to restart bike while in traffic, cars beeping, and flying past you. very dangerous and needs to be check by Ducati. there are numerous others with the same situation.

2020 Multistrada

Upon coming to a stop to make a left turn, while pulling in the clutch to engage first gear, the engine quit, stranding me in the middle of the roadway while attempting to restart motorcycle. Traffic to my rear could collide into me as well as possible cross traffic. This has happened multiple times in multiple situations. No warning lights or messages occurred prior to engine stalling. While personally investigating the problem I have found that this appears to be a common problem with this model of motorcycle and anecdotal reports indicate the manufacturer has developed an internal repair procedure to address this issue only after owners have reported it, which is after the potential safety issue has occurred. My motorcycle was purchased new from the dealership.

2020 Multistrada

Upon starting from a stop, then rapidly stopping to avoid vehicle who had unexpectedly stopped in front of me, the engine quit, stranding me in the middle of the intersection while attempting to restart motorcycle. Traffic to my rear could collide into me as well as possible cross traffic. This has happened several times and I have video documentation. Dealer has not been able to duplicate problem. No warning lights or messages occurred prior to engine stalling. While personally investigating the problem I found that this appears to be a common problem with this year make and model of motorcycle which the manufacturerer either has been unable to or refuses to address. Note that I had previously owned and operated an earlier model of this motorcycle (2017) and had no such problems with it while putting over 20k miles on it.

2019 Multistrada

2019 Ducati Multistrada MTS1200S. Bought brand new. The bike constantly stalls when pulling in the clutch coming to a stop. Bike is completely stock. No issues with air filter or fuel. The bike does it intermittently and has almost caused a couple of crashes on the highway when coming into traffic. Bike will stall in backed up traffic on the highway or coming to a red light, then cars behind start moving while traffic starts speeding up and I am having to get the bike restarted. Very dangerous. Not rideable.

2019 Multistrada

The motorcycle randomly stalls when beginning from a stop, adding throttle and then coming off the throttle. It isn't consistent and was very sporadic but today it happened 4 times. It's my understanding that this happens to others based on several posts on ducati.ms forums.

2019 Multistrada

1. When pulling in the clutch approaching a stop sign or light, the engine RPM's drop down through idle and the bike stalls. 2. There is traffic behind me doesn't initially know the bike has stalled and starts to move forward. I have almost been hit several times. The same safety issues occurs when coming to a stop, as the bike may not restart immediately. I also have to take my attention away from the traffic in front of me to restart the engine. 3. I purchase the bike used and do not know if it was reviewed by a dealer. I have not done so. Ducati is well aware of this problem, as it has been known and reported by customers since 2015. 4. No warning is provided by the motorcycle. It just stops running.

2018 Multistrada

The motorcycle has had occasional issues of stalling while riding if I pull the clutch in while coasting to a stop. For example coming up to a light or stop sign, I would anticipate the stop and downshift and pull the clutch in, resulting In a stall. Yesterday while setting the cruise control at 40 MPH and cruising down the street, the bike just stalled and turned off while being on cruise control. I was able to restrat the bike when I stopped. I notified the dealership and will be taking it in on the 11th of May.

Gas gauge is non functional, and Ducati has not been able to rectify this for many years! Ducati is on revision H of the fuel level sender, and still have non-functionality issues. Not knowing how much fuel can lead to sudden loss of power. It's happened many times on this motorcycle.

2011 Multistrada

My motorcycle has a faulty fuel sensor which has been replaced a total of three times a two year period and is broken again. The manufacturer is advising me this is out of warranty and ignoring the clear poor quality and/or design of this part which has required so many replacements in such a short time period. They are relying on the fact that motorcycle riders are mostly recreational and will not notice problems on parts that last just short of their year warranty for parts.

Not sure if the last complaint went through so he i go again. My motorcycle has two manufactured defects. The motorcycle overheats in city traffic causing the motorcycle to shut off because the computer and the motorcycle engine get too hot. This also causes other issues because the motorcycle always runs hot. The clutch fluid can boil and seals fail on the clutch slave cylinder. Mine went at 6000 miles leaking fluid causing me to have no ability to shift the motorcycle due to a design flaw. Please investigate these two flaws before someone gets hurt or killed on these ducati motorcycles. The problem is well known. I have a scheduled repair providing the dealership and the manufacturer do something. Probably get the same faulty part installed but new version of them. Overheating problem probably won't ever get fixed.

2015 Multistrada

1) when driving this motorcycle in second gear and applying the throttle, the bike has a 2-4 second response delay that is followed by an extreme engine and power surge. This surge is very strong in second gear and caused the rider to momentarily lose control of the bike. I complained to the dealer and the manufacturer. Ducati suggested that i attempt to control the surges by reducing the electronic stability control that limit front wheel rises. This is both a dangerous suggestion and ineffective as it only a part of the problem. Subsequently i was told to wait until ducati addressed the problem. No such undertaking has been announced or completed. 2) the electronic stability control also caused power surges that forced the bike to move erratically and dangerously in and out of turns. Again, i was told to turn the safety devices to lowest settings or off. This is an unsafe riding condition as this bike is designed to use those controls. 3) on numerous occasions the dash indicated that the bike was engaged in a running gear when it actually was in neutral. This resulted in a fall at a stop light and several dangerous situations on the road. The gear indicator was adjusted by the dealer but the problem continued. This problem has been repeatedly reported on several models in the ducati line and has never been addressed. I spoke with ducati and they acknowledged that this is a "dangerous" condition but it has never been reported to owners or fixed.

The plastic fuel tank on my 2008 ducati multistrada 1100s motorcycle is expanding and deforming. So far my tank has only cracks in the paint, as well as fitment issues on the motorcycle's frame, but i am concerned about an eventual failure of the tank from continued deformation, causing fuel leakage. Obviously this would be a very dangerous occurrence, which could lead to a possible fire and/or crash. This is a well known problem on late model ducati motorcycles, and appears to be caused by the ethanol added to gasoline in the us. *tr

2008 Multistrada

The plastic fuel tank has expanded to the point where there is interference between the plastic tank and other hard points. Difficult to remove for routine service due to misalignment with mounting hole/fasteners. Bodywork making contact where gaps should exist. Evidence of fuel seepage at fuel-pump mounting flange/seal area indicating warpage. Public forums indicate this is a common problem for many ducati models with plastic gas tanks. *tr

2008 Multistrada

2008 ducati gt 1000 with faulty gas tank and spokes that are rusting. *tr

2007 Multistrada

The plastic fuel tank has expanded to the point where it is nearly impossible to remove and install for required maintenance. It is misaligned with body parts and the side covers don't fit well anymore and pop open. It is damaging to the other body parts. I have read that fuel leakage will be the end result of the problem as it continues to expand and that the tank can come off in a crash. *tr

UNKNOWN- My 2012 Ducati Multistrada V4S is equipped with Blind Spot Warning and Adaptive Cruse Control. The systems have been approved, and are being used in many European countries without incident as the data shows. I have been informed by my US dealer that the US Department of Transportation has not approved the use these potentially life saving systems for my motorcycle. The systems were made active for the media to test and evaluate on US highways without incident. While this may not technically be a complaint against the manufacturer (Ducati), it is more of a question/complaint as to why the DOT has not approved these safety systems that would make me a safer driver and potentially save my life. I am sure there are good reasons - please help me understand.

2014 Multistrada

The rear brake has never worked--at all--since I bought this motorcycle new. The rear brake lever simply "goes to the floor" with no resistance against the foot or any application of the brake caliper. It is fundamentally useless. The front brakes work superbly. I am a mechanical engineer and am high skilled in the repair, modification, and maintenance of automobiles, airplanes and motorcycles. After a thorough bleed of the system, including the installation of additional bleed nipples on the master cylinder and the ABS unit to get ALL air out of the system, the rear brake will work for perhaps 50 miles, then it returns to mush. In addition to the added bleed nipples I have tried all manner of other equipment improvements and procedural changes including reverse bleeding from the caliper--as many other owners have done--with the same result. No rear brake. The dealer admits defeat, too.

2011 Multistrada

While preparing to removing the front wheel from my 2011 ducati multistrada 1200st, i noticed the lower portion of right front fork leg that pinches the wheel axle was broken. This concerned me very much as this holds the front wheel axle tight so that it does not come loose. I was preparing to take a three day, 1100 mile trip. I looked at the ducati forum (http://www.ducati.ms/forums/44-multistrada/342081-2010-11-1200s-tsb-recall-right-fork-lowers.html) and found information referring to a ducati technical service bulletin tsb 14-002 (full tsb can be found here: http://www.mts1200.info/mts12_faq/mts1200_docs/ducati/mts1200_ohlins_right_fork_ducati_service_bulletin_888.pdf ). The tsb states, "this issue has no impact on rider safety..." though it may be safe to ride across town to get it repaired, my engineering experience tells me this is a safety concern, especially if you have to ride any distance before the repair can be performed. I believe this issue should be investigated and should become a full safety recall. I don't feel that it was appropriate to find out about this on my own accord and having to do my own internet research. All susceptible customers should be contacted by ducati for warranty repair service. Pictures available upon request. *tr
