How to read a Entegra Anthem VIN — every digit explained
Every Entegra Anthem carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Anthem.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Anthem VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

DEF head failure in June 2021. 100 miles after Leaving Clemson, SC, check engine light came on and DEF head indicator turned orange. DEF tank was over 1/2 full. Talked to Spartan rep in the afternoon he said keep driving until you get 3 fault codes. Got parked that evening in Nancy, KY and had 5 error codes. Fortunately we were in a safe parking lot and not on the highway. Saturday morning Coach started but wouldn't go. Replacement was mailed from Spartan Monday to mobile repair unit in Kentucky. DEF head was replaced Wednesday AM and we were back on road by 10am. The DEF head failure seems to be an epidemic on Spartan RV chassis (and other vehicles). We had about 24,000 miles on engine and many of our RV friends had similar failure experiences.
The DEF sensor head failed leaving my 45 foot RV stranded on the side of the interstate with my wife and kids inside.
Having heard rumors for some time of the dreaded DEF shut down while using our motorcoach, without a recall of the unit , we have to assume the coach is safe to use. Ours had been parked in the storage building for about 10 days. Yesterday I went to get it out. When I started the coach it immediately turned on the check engine warning. It threw 3 codes, SPN#3374, SPN#3031, & SPN#1761. I’m told the engine will derate first by 25%, next it debates by 40%, then finally to limp mode of 5 mile per hour. If this had happened the week before I would have had a wife and two dogs, in 95 degree weather with no engine, no air conditioning and about 250 miles from home. When I contacted the manufacturer I was told Parts might be available mid August to September. Fortunately I was at home. There are any number of people being left at the side of the road waiting on a tow truck. We are using what is considered a Gen 6, or a Generation #6, the replacement is to be a Gen7, which seems to have a better reliability but is currently unavailable. The codes have been emailed to the manufacturer and they have had enough experience that they know what the problem is.
DEF failure 7/28/2020. Can not drive Vehicle. Goes into slow mode There are warning lights and messages that state do not drive.
While driving from Los Angeles to Phoenix on 03/07/2019, I received a series of check engine lights and warnings. These came and went , then eventually stayed on. When I got to the dealer in Phoenix, they sent me to an engine/chassis repair facility. The red stop engine light came on (with full derate to 5 mph) just as I pulled into the facility lot. (Whew!) The problem was a defective DEF head (codes 6255 derate 17 counts, 3868 def quality 59 counts, 4677 fluid level uprate 69 counts, 4572 temp uprate 69 counts). The shop had a new head overnighted from Spartan (took 3 days, actually) and repaired under warranty. I am reporting this because these heads are breaking in large numbers now, with a mandatory derate, and if it happens somewhere other than in a shop lot, Bad Things can happen. I understand that there is an investigation going on into this because of numerous failures. I am unwilling to take a long trip across the desert now because I might get stranded.
DEF Fluid Sensor failure codes displayed and warnings of impending engine delayed or shutdown. Cold not continue driving. My safety concern is my vehicle can be stranded on a roadside which my not be possible for a 45 Foot Motorhome. Many RV’s are having this issue and the Manufacture of this unit SHAW Industry can not supply any parts. Leaving many stranded!
Vehicle was stationary. After starting once to fill air pressure, turned off and 1/2 hour later turned key to on and the check engine light stayed on. Three error codes all relating to def were displayed. Spartan sent out a new def head and it was replaced. The next week after about 800 miles of driving and several stops and starts one of those three codes is now displaying. Waiting for cummins to diagnose the current issue. The def issue can lead to derating at any time, which i have not had explained to me quantitatively. This poses a considerable safety hazard if running at 65 mph on a crowded interstate and the coach slows down to 5 mph.
The DEF head unit failed on our Anthem and left us stranded on the road. These DEF heads are failing on diesel motorhomes across the country putting consumers in often dangerous situations along the nations highways. Shaw Industries is the sole provider for Spartan Chassis emission systems. We like many we had to wait weeks to get a new one. We had to buy a 5th generation DEF head and these are the ones that fail the most. The 7th generation which supposedly is the only reliable DEF head won’t work on our 2016 Anthem. Now we run the risk of another failure and being stranded possibly 1000’s of miles from home. Shaw Industries and Spartan have no accountability or legal reason to be held financially liable since RV’s don’t fall under the automobile industries US code compliance. The EPA and NHSTA needs to get this issue resolved ASAP. My 45 ft motor coach is a very large truck in which I pay ridiculous license fees to keep it on the road. This DEF head supplier has got to be held to the same reliability standards as the auto industry. If not then you should demand a recall on these units at Shaw Industries cost for replacement or reimbursement to owners who spent upwards of $1000+ to fix this issue. Please address this issue so diesel vehicle owners can enjoy the same protections we do for our gas vehicles. Thank you , Mike Arnold
DEF Head failure, SPN 1761, FMI 3. Bad tank level sensor, will cause derate of engine performance/speed/rpm in an unknow future time period. Will take the unit down to 5 mph with little notice. During this time the DEF pump and after treatment process is continuing with no environmental effects, this is only a tank level sensor failure, but the engine forces an eventual shutdown. At this time the tank level sensor is not a replaceable item, the whole DEF Head must be replaced at close to $1000. and now there is a national supply shortage of the unit.
The DEF head sensor failed giving a warning that the engine would be derated if the engine was not shut off. The safety hazard with a derated engine is that 5 mph is top speed, not only endangering my vehicle, plus other vehicles near by. The head sensor was replaced by Cummins after purchasing a replacement tank with a new head sensor attached. The purchase was made from Spartan, the manufacturer of the Chasis. Individual head sensors were not available due to a nationwide shortage. I was first made aware of a problem when a DEF warning buzzard and a check engine light started while driving down the interstate. I checked the DEF tank and found it to be 3/4 full and no leaks or noticeable problems. After Cummins replaced the tank with a new head sensor I was able to drive 2000 miles without another problem.

The rear bathroom window, on the left side (driver’s side), separated and fell off the coach. The incident was not observed in real time but discovered after a stop at an RV park. The window fell off somewhere along a busy Interstate. This is a potential hazardous if not life threatening condition. There is a recall for these windows (NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V529000), but apparently my coach was manufactured before the manufacturer complete day. Below is the details on that particular window: WINDOW,18X24 7690 BLK Lippert Components (LCI) part number of V000512571 As you might expect I am terrified that another window might separate and damage another vehicle, or worse cause serious injury or death to unsuspecting motorist. I have never reported a an incident with the NHTSA but would think that this occurrence would raise some serious alarm bells with whoever reviews this submission.
We had our third different window adhesive bonds fail. Which is the same issue as the recall below. The mfg has stated that they will not cover this issue. Case Number: [XXX] VIN: [XXX] Unfortunately, due to the length of time out of warranty Lippert will not be able to assist in warranty coverage. Our 2018 was one of the last 2018 build by ENTEGRA has the same issue as the 2019 recall NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V529000. After the first failure, I checked the other windows and found a second failed window. Have contacted Lippert Customer Care Center and they will not provide any type of support to have this issue fixed.

Reference nhtsa recall 16v-313 and previous submission 11344194. Our motorhome with a spartan chassis suffered an exhaust bellows failure exactly described in recall 16v-313. It is of the correct vintage and type described by 16v-313. Spartan chassis company refuses to make repairs or honor the recall 16v-313. They claim that our unit is excluded from this recall yet will not explain how or why it is not compliant with the recall. We fit within the time, dates and vins described. Spartan refuses to explain why the recall is not being honored despite the failure being a picture perfect example of the recall situation. Can you help me get an answer from them?
The exhaust system separated between the turbo and the particulate filter on the cummins diesel engine. This is in a spartan rv chassis. The heat from the exhaust leak due to the flexible exhaust bellows caused extensive thermal damage. See nhtsa recall 16v-313 as that recall describes the problem exactly.

Several of the windows which where manufactured by herh glass have come loose from their brackets due to faulty adhesive material. While driving down the road when the adhesive comes loose, the window will fly up and be ripped off the coach causing a potential accident due to flying debris.

Blind spot warning is supposed to detect a vehicle at the rear bumper to the front of the motorhome. There are 3 units on each side of my motorhome, rear/middle/front. It detects a vehicle at the front quarter of the motorhome only. I have contacted Entegra for 6 months now with no results. Questioning other owners and many say they do not work properly but pay no attention to them. I use these warning lights and have been in near accidents at least four times already! I am very concerned because if I do get in an accident due to this system not working properly I would be at fault. This system is very important especially when driving at night or at dusk when some vehicles do not have their headlights on yet. If a vehicle is detected, having traveled nearly three quarters of the way thru your vehicle, and you indicate that your changing lanes then its to late. ACCIDENT!!!!!
