How to read a Forest River Vibe VIN — every digit explained
Every Forest River Vibe carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Vibe.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Vibe VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Tl* the contact owns a 2018 forest river vibe. While traveling 65 mph, the contact and her husband were alerted by another motorist that there was smoke coming from their vehicle. The contact's husband pulled the trailer over and discovered that the rear passenger side wheel axle was in flames. The contact's husband was able to extinguish the fire with water. However, as they began to pull off the exit, the rear passenger side tire detached from the vehicle. The contact linked nhtsa campaign number: 18v624000 (suspension) with the failure. The contact spoke with an independent mechanic and was informed to call forest river. The manufacturer and dealer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was not available. *dt*jb *js
Not enough clearance between the tires and the bottom of the camper causing the tires to impact the bottom of the camper while towing. This has the potential to damage the tires and cause deflation and a possible crash.
This travel trailer is dual axle. Each side has 3 couplings welded to the frame. The leaf springs bolt to these couplings. During a routine inspection on 9/30/2023, found cracks on the aft passenger side coupling. The aft welds are cracked all the way through and the front welds are cracked half way through. The coupling is pulled away from the frame. This coupling has less than 1 inch of the weld intact holding it to the frame. If the remaining weld failed, The aft section of the leaf spring would become free. This could cause the travel trailer to become unstable and possibly crash. This is the second serious issue we have had with this travel trailer. (See complaint 11493254, dated 11/12/2022). Tomorrow (10/2/2023) will be contacting welding shop to see if it is reparable and get an estimate.
On Friday, November 11, 2022 while traveling to North Carolina from Ohio, our travel trailer suffered a catastrophic incident. One of the axles broke while driving on I64E, resulting in the tire coming off, damaging the body of the camper, and leaving my husband stranded several hours from home. After waiting for hours, he was not even able to find anyone to tow the vehicle, so he had to make his way to a repair shop 23 miles away. Thankfully, no other vehicles were involved, and there were no injuries. This is the second issue we have had with this particular travel trailer. The camper is only 3 years old. In late 2020, a leaf spring broke, rendering the camper unusable. Subsequently, during repair, it was discovered that a second leaf spring was on the verge of breaking, and it was replaced. We have reported the incident to our insurance company, as well as the extended warranty company. I have also contacted Forest River, Inc. and I am awaiting their response.
Trailer is rated at 9600# has 4400# axles installed. Springs, shackles and bolts have been replaced. Latest failure was a hub break while underway causing left rear wheel to lockup. I believe this is due to under engineering as the parts im replacing are for a 3500# axle when looking up part numbers. This makes max trailer load 7000#
Found right rear leaf spring hanger broken off of frame causing severe axle misalignment. Lippert frame.
Tl* the contact owns a 2015 forest river vibe 311rls. While driving 70 mph, the rear driver's side tire blew out without warning. The contact also stated that the wires from the axle were wrapped around the tire. The contact was able to steer off the road and stop the vehicle. The contact had to remove the wires that were wrapped around the defective tire and axle. The contact was able to replace the tire with a spare and drove home. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 1,000. The vin was invalid. *tt*jb

The plywood roof has separated from the rafters down both sides of the travel trailer up to a foot in towards the center of the roof. This has caused the rubber membrane two separate at the rough edges as well. This could cause the rubber roof membrane to come off traveling and land on a vehicle that could be behind it. There are at least two trailers of this model that i know of have this issue. This vehicle has been told less than 500 miles in most of it was back-and-forth to the dealer for several repairs. We have only owned owned this trailer since march.

Purchased trailer new 02/2020, after recent trip had trailer in to repack wheel bearings and check brakes. Dealer notified me of burnt wheel bearing and states brakes bad. Also needs to replace hubs? When I brought trailer home noticed right rear axle tire had cords showing on outside of tire and inside tread was separating, left rear axle tire was wore off on inside of tire. Front axle tires OK. Initially had no problems or warnings with trailer. Replaced tires. Dealer didn't notice tire problem, could have been safety issue if blown while traveling. Don't have tire brand handy. I see there is possibly axle/bearing problems with 2019 Vibes!, and certain brands of tires? [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
Not enough clearance between the tires and the bottom of the camper causing the tires to impact the bottom of the camper while towing. This has the potential to damage the tires and cause deflation and a possible crash.

The propane stopped working, I had just installed new refilled tanks and was troubleshooting so I turned on the refrigerator propane and waited outside for it to light. When it tries to light there is a big whooshing noise coming from the burner. I have never heard that before when running my refrigerator off of my propane. I went to listen at the tanks to see if I can hear propane going through the lines, I do hear propane, but the burner will not light. Nothing propane wise currently works. I did some internet research and came across the Jayco recall with the exact same regulator part that I have. I called Forest River and they said since they do not have a recall on that part, they will do nothing about it. They gave me a number for the distributor, which I called, he told me they also do not have a recall on it and also will not replace it he also said the manufacturer will also not replace it because they also do not have a recall on it. I find this to be a huge safety issue, as reading the recall Jayco put out it appears that the regulator could put out to much propane and cause a fire.
