How to read a GMC Sierra VIN — every digit explained
Every GMC Sierra carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Sierra.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Sierra VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

2006 GMC Sierra recalls 6
Equipment:other:labels
What's wrong. Certain trucks and sport utility vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 110, "tire selection and rims." these vehicles were shipped with tire and loading information labels listing an inacccurate vehicle capacity weight.
Risk. A misprinted label could lead to improper vehicle loading specifications or tire inflation which could result in a tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix. Owners will be provided with corrected labels and installation instructions. At the customer's option, a dealer can install the label for them. The recall began on march 31, 2006. Owners may contact buick at 1-866-608-8080, cadillac at 1-866-982-2339, chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, gmc at 1-866-996-9463, hummer at 1-800-732-5493, pontiac at 1-800-620-7668, saturn at 1-800-972-8876, or isuzu at 1-800-255-6727.
Equipment:electrical
What's wrong. Certain cequent 90 degree 7-way right angle adaptors sold by distributors in tow packages for aftermarket sales to tow 5th wheel rv travel trailers. Due to incorrect wiring of the harness, the trailer lights may not operate properly.
Risk. If the trailer lights are not working properly, a vehicle crash can occur.
Fix. All of the defective tow packages are still at the distributor level and have not been sold to any consumers.
Steering:hydraulic Power Assist:hose, Piping, And Connections
What's wrong. Certain passenger vehicles may have been built with a power steering hose that is not to specification. Under extreme steering maneuvers, such as turning the steering wheel fully to the left or right while braking, the hose may fracture and leak fluid.
Risk. If this were to occur, power steering assist would be lost and increased steering effort would be required. On vehicles equipped with hydro-boost power brakes, it could also result in loss of power brake assist and increased braking effort would be required. If the power steering fluid spray were to spray onto hot engine parts, an engine compartment fire could occur.
Fix. Dealers will inspect the power steering hose(s) for two suspect date codes and replace them if required. The recall will begin on october 14, 2005. Owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, gmc at 1-866-996-9463, buick at 1-866-608-8080, cadillac at 1-866-982-2339, isuzu at 1-800-255-6727, or hummer at 1-800-732-5493.
Wheels:rim
What's wrong. Certain sport utility vehicles and trucks fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 110, "tire selection and rims." these vehicles have an incomplete tire rim designation on the certification/tire label located on the driver's door edge. In addition, the label may also be missing the tire load rating on the label. Although this information is not required by the standard, if a tire of a lesser load rating is installed, the tire may not be able to sustain the loads encountered during use.
Risk. If a customer replaces a wheel and only relies on the rim size designation that is indicated on the label, a wheel that is of a different rim contour designation may be installed. It may be difficult or impossible to mount the tire on a wheel with the wrong contour. If the tire is mounted on the wheel with the wrong contour, the wheel and tire may not perform as intended, which could increase the risk of a crash.
Fix. A label that will correct the label originally installed will be mailed to consumers along with installation instructions. The customer will have the option for dealers to install the label. The recall begaon on november 7, 2006. Owners should contact cadillac at 1-866-982-2239, chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, and gmc trucks at 1-866-996-9463.
Engine And Engine Cooling
What's wrong. On certain trucks equipped with an 8.1l v8 (rpo l8-vin g) engine have a condition in which the engine fuel rail pulse damper retainer clip may fracture resulting in inadequate retention of the damper.
Risk. If the damper comes loose, a fuel leak may result. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire.
Fix. Dealers will replace the engine fuel rail pulse damper retainer clip free of charge. The recall began on august 31, 2006. Owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 and gmc trucks at 1-866-996-9463.
Exterior Lighting:headlights
What's wrong. Dope, inc. Is recalling 42,540 combination corner and bumper lamp assemblies of various part numbers sold for use as aftermarket equipment for various passenger vehicles. These headlamps fail to conform to the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 108, "lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment." these lamps do not contain the required amber side reflectors.
Risk. Decreased lighting visibility may result in a vehicle crash.
Fix. Dope, inc. Will notify owners and offer a full refund for the noncompliant combination lamps. The safety recall began on july 28, 2009. Owners may contact dope, inc. At 1-626-272-1798.
2005 GMC Sierra recalls 11
Service Brakes, Hydraulic
What's wrong. Certain trucks, sport utility vehicles, and vans equipped with bosch hydro-boost brake assemblies, the hydraulic brake booster pressure accumulator may crack and separate from the hydro-boost assembly during normal operating conditions.
Risk. If a separation occurred and the hood of the vehicle were open, fragments from the accumulator could cause injury to people in the immediate area. The presence of this crack or fractured surface could allow the hydraulic fluid to leak from the accumulator circuit of the booster assembly. The loss of fluid would cause increased steering and braking effort and a crash may occur without prior warning.
Fix. Dealers will test the hydro-boost assembly for functional operation of the two-function valve. If the hydro-boost assembly fails the test, dealers will replace the assembly free of charge. The recall began on march 23, 2005. Owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, gmc trucks at 1-866-996-9463 and hummer at 1-800-732-5493.
Steering:gear Box:shaft Sector
What's wrong. On certain trucks, the bolt that attaches the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear may not meet specification. The bolt may fracture resulting in the loss of steering.
Risk. If this happens while the vehicle is moving, a crash could occur without prior warning.
Fix. Dealers will replace the intermediate steering shaft bolt free of charge. The recall began on january 24, 2005. Owners may contact gmc at 1-866-996-9463 and chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438.
Parking Brake
What's wrong. On certain pickup trucks equipped with manual transmissions and built with either pbr parking brake systems or trw parking brake systems, the parking brake friction linings may wear to an extent where the parking brake can become ineffective in immobilizing a parked vehicle.
Risk. If the parking brake does not hold, unintended vehicle movement could occur, which could result in a crash.
Fix. Dealers will install a low-force spring clip retainer for vehicles equipped with a pbr parking brake system. On vehicles equipped with the trw parking brake system, dealers will install a redesigned parking brake cable assembly. The recall began on july 29, 2005. Owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or gmc at 1-866-996-9463.
Air Bags:frontal
What's wrong. Certain vehicles originally built with cloth seats that were equipped with an automatic air bag passenger sensing system and later reupholstered with aftermarket leather seat cover kits are involved. Testing has indicated that the aftermarket leather seat covers can cause the passenger sensing system to malfunction.
Risk. If the passenger sensing system malfunctions, the front air bag on the passenger side may be disabled when it should be enabled, or enabled when it should be disabled. In either case, in the event of a crash that requires air bag deployment, a front passenger's level of injury may be increased.
Fix. Because a replacement leather seat cover that is compatible with the passenger sensing system is not available, general motors (gm) will repurchase these vehicles in accordance with the terms stated in gm's letter to owners. The recall began on november 6, 2006. Owners should contact gm at 1-877-477-1022 to begin the process of repurchasing their vehicle.

Seat Belts:rear/other
What's wrong. On certain crew cab pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, the 2nd row center occupant seat belt routing may make it difficult to position the lap portion of the safety belt low around the hips of occupants, especially smaller occupants, seated in this position. Appropriate use of a child seat or booster seat, as recommended for small children, does improve the fit condition for this user group. In addition to instructions on proper infant and young child restraint (with child seats or boosters), special verbiage for restraining older child is included in the owner's manual. Also, the suggested seat belt fit/routing for adults, irrespective of seating position, is described in the owner's manual text.
Risk. A lap portion of the seat belt routing that is not low and snug on the hips can allow the lap belt to ride up on an occupant's abdomen instead of fitting low around their hipbones, and therefore, can expose them to more risk of abdominal and internal organ injury.
Fix. Dealers will cut open the guide loop, remove a portion of the loop, and then the remaining two sides should be folded over and secured with a retainer free of charge. The recall began on july 21, 2005. Owners may contact cadillac at 1-866-982-2339, chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, gmc at 1-866-996-9463, or hummer at 1-800-732-5493.
Fuel System, Gasoline:delivery:hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings
What's wrong. On certain sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks equipped with 5.3l (rpo l59) v8 engines, the engine fuel rail crossover tube retainer screws were not manufactured to specifications and may break.
Risk. If the tube retainer screw breaks, fuel could leak from the fuel rail crossover joint, the engine may stall and, if an ignition source were present, an engine compartment fire could occur.
Fix. Dealers will inspect the fuel rail crossover tube and, if necessary, replace the retainer screws. Owners were notified by telephone on july 30, 2004, with a followup owner letter began august 5, 2004. Owners should contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or gmc at 1-866-996-9463. Note: the gm bulletin lists the tahoe and yukon models because canadian vehicles are included in the bulletin. No u.s. Tahoe or yukon vehicles are included in the u.s. Campaign.
Power Train:manual Transmission:shift Pattern Indicator
What's wrong. Certain sport utility vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 102, "transmission shift lever sequence, starter interlock and transmission braking effect." under certain vehicle starting conditions, the shift lever position indicator located in the instrument panel cluster may not illuminate. If the shift lever position indicator does not illuminate, the driver may not know which gear the vehicle is in.
Risk. The vehicle may move in an unintended direction resulting in possible injury to others outside of the vehicle.
Fix. Dealers will reprogram the instrument panel cluster free of charge. The recall began on february 14, 2005. Owners may contact cadillac at 1-866-982-2339, chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, and gmc at 1-866-996-9463.
2004 GMC Sierra recalls 10
Seat Belts:front:anchorage
What's wrong. Certain extended and regular cab pickup trucks and cargo vans converted to compressed natural gas (cng) fail to conform to the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 225, 'child restraint anchorage systems.' these vehicles have one seating position, the center rear seat, equipped with child restraint lower anchorages.
Risk. The standard requires child seat lower anchorages in two seating positions for vehicles with three rear seating positions. The standard cab and cargo van vehicles, which only have front seating positions, have an air bag off switch to disable the front passenger air bag and do not have child restraint lower anchorages in the passenger seat. The standard requires passenger seat child seat lower anchorages in vehicles with an air bag off switch. However, the standard does not require vehicles with only front seating positions to have lower anchorage provisions if the vehicle is not equipped with an air bag off switch.
Fix. To bring the standard cab and cargo van vehicles into compliance, dealers will inject epoxy into the air bag off switch to prevent air bag activation, relocate the switch behind the instrument panel and then install a cover over the resulting opening. The sun visor label and owner's manual will also be changed. The correction for the extended cab vehicle will consist of changing the front passenger seat to a seat that has child restraint lower anchorages. The recall began on september 9, 2004. Owners should contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or gmc at 1-866-996-9463.
Structure:body:tailgate:hinge And Attachments
What's wrong. On certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, the galvanized steel tailgate support cables that retain the tailgate in the full open (horizontal) position may corrode, weaken, and eventually fracture. If both cables fractured, the tailgate would suddenly drop and strike the top surface of the rear bumper.
Risk. Anyone sitting or standing on the horizontal surface of the tailgate when both cables fractured could be injured by falling from the tailgate. On vehicles that have had the bumper removed, the tailgate may drop even lower. Additionally, if there is cargo on the tailgate the cargo may fall off if the support cables fracture.
Fix. Dealers will replace the cables. Interim owner notification began on april 7, 20004. The recall began on september 24, 2004, when replacement parts were available, and will continue through october 29, 2004. Owners should contact cadillac at 1-866-982-2339, chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or gmc at 1-866-996-9463, or visit www.mygmlink.com, and enter your vehicle identification number.
Equipment
What's wrong. Aftermarket pickup truck over-the-rail bedliners manufactured for installation on 1999-2004 chevrolet silverado and gmc sierra pickup trucks. The toggle wing assembly used to attach the bedliner to the truck bed is not engaging fully in the stake pocket of the pickup truck.
Risk. The bedliner can become detached from the pickup while it is motion, possibly endangering following motorists or pedestrians.
Fix. Durakon will issue a press release in attempt to notify customers that could have purchased the defective bedliner. If you purchased either a durakon allstar of patriot overrail bedliner since august 1, 2003, for 1999 to 2004 chevrolet silverado or gmc sierra trucks, or purchased one of these pickup trucks with either brand bedliner already installed, you should return to an authorized durakon dealer so that the bedliner can be inspected and, if necessary, repaired with a newly designed toggle wing fastening system, or if required, replaced with a new bedliner free of charge. Please call the durakon hotline at 1-800-933-4200 to find the nearest authorized durakon dealer.
Service Brakes, Hydraulic
What's wrong. Certain sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and passenger vans fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 135, ?passenger car brake systems.? Some of these vehicles were produced with an out-of-specification brake hydro-boost housing relief valve bore.
Risk. Consequently, the valve o-ring seal may fracture. Steering efforts may be slightly increased while braking or parking. Under certain driving conditions, a fractured seal may require a slight increase in the applied brake pedal effort to achieve the same vehicle deceleration rate as prior to the seat fracture.
Fix. Dealers are to replace the hydro-boost relief valve. The recall began on june 18, 2004. Owners should contact cadillac at 1-866-982-2339; chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438; gmc at 1-866-996-9463; or hummer at 1-866-486-6376.

2003 GMC Sierra recalls 9
Visibility:windshield
What's wrong. Certain pickup trucks fail to conform to federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 212, "windshield mounting." some of these vehicles lack a continuous urethane bonding bead between the body surface and the windshield.
Risk. In vehicles with this condition, the windshield may not be retained in accordance with the safety standard during a vehicle crash.
Fix. Dealers will remove, reseal, and reinstall the windshield. Owner notification began on january 28, 2003. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or gmc at 1-800-462-8782.

2002 GMC Sierra recalls 7
Fuel System, Other:delivery
What's wrong. Some 2wd and 4wd pickup trucks, converted to either dedicated or bi-fuel compressed natural gas (cng) fuel usage, were assembled with a throttle cable that can contact and rub through the flexible pressurized fuel line creating a pinhole leak of natural gas to the atmosphere.
Risk. A strong odor of natural gas may be detected from inside the vehicle, possibly accompanied by a hissing noise. If the natural gas were accidentally ignited, serious injury could result.
Fix. Dealers will secure the throttle cable to eliminate the possibility of contact with the cng fuel line. The cng fuel line, throttle cable, and cruise control cable are also to be inspected and replaced if necessary. Owner notification began on december 11, 2003. Owners should contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or gmc at 1-866-996-9463.

Service Brakes, Hydraulic:antilock/traction Control/electronic Limited Slip
What's wrong. Certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles may experience unwanted antilock brake system (abs) activation. This condition is more likely to occur in environmentally corrosive areas. This recall will be launched in the "salt belt" states of connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, maryland, massachusetts, maine, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia, wisconsin and the district of columbia only.
Risk. This can cause increased stopping distances during low-speed brake applications, which could result in a crash.
Fix. Dealers are to remove the wheel speed sensor and thoroughly clean the wheel speed sensor mounting surface on the bearing, apply rust inhibitor to the cleaned surface, grease the mounting surface, reinstall the wheel speed sensor, and check the peak-to-peak output voltage to ensure the wheel speed signal is within specifications. The recall began september 22, 2005. Owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or gmc at 1-866-996-9463.

2000 GMC Sierra recalls 12
Air Bags:frontal:sensor/control Module-inactive
What's wrong. On certain pickup and utility trucks, some of these vehicles have an air bag sensing diagnostic module (sdm) which contains an anomaly that could result in the driver and passenger's air bag failing to deploy during certain frontal crashes.
Risk. In a vehicle crash, front seat occupants may receive more severe injuries.
Fix. Dealers will recalibrate the sdm on the affected vehicles. Owner notification began august 28, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or gmc at 1-800-462-8782.
Service Brakes, Hydraulic:antilock/traction Control/electronic Limited Slip
What's wrong. Vehicle description: light duty pickup trucks equipped with 4-wheel disc brakes. Some of these vehicles have an antilock brake system (abs) motor containing an out-of-specification spring clip. This clip could allow the motor bearing to become misaligned. If misalignment occurs, eventually the abs would be non-functional.
Risk. The base brakes would remain fully functional, but the dynamic rear proportioning (drp) system, which optimizes front to rear brake balance, would become inoperative.
Fix. Dealers will replace the brake pressure module valve assembly.
Service Brakes, Hydraulic:foundation Components:disc:caliper
What's wrong. This is not a safety recall in accordance with the safety act. However, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. Vehicle description: 1/2 ton light duty pickup trucks. On certain trucks, failure to follow the service procedure set forth in the service manual for removal of the front brake caliper can result in movement of the front brake hose relative to its knuckle mounting bracket. If this movement results in increased length between the bracket and the banjo fitting that attaches to the brake caliper, it is possible for the brake hose to come in contact with the wheel rim.
Risk. This contact with the wheel rim could, in time, cause the brake hose to become worn to the point that brake fluid leakage could occur. If this occurred, loss of front brakes is possible.
Fix. Dealers will attach a notice label to the front brake hoses stating that the calipers must be supported when removed.
Structure:body:tailgate:hinge And Attachments

Service Brakes, Hydraulic:foundation Components:hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings
What's wrong. Vehicle description: light duty pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles. Some of these vehicles have a clearance condition between the front right-hand brake pipe and the body cross sill that could decrease to the point of allowing contact during the life of the vehicle. If contact occurs and the brake pipe becomes damaged, in half of the brake system there can be a loss of brake fluid and pressure. The brake warning lamp will be activated when the brake fluid level reaches the indicator limit.
Risk. During braking, the pedal will be lower than normal and stopping distances will be longer. If this occurs when stopping distance is limited, a crash could occur.
Fix. Dealers will inspect the front right-hand brake pipe for wear. If there are signs of wear, this section of the brake pipe will be replaced with a new designed brake pipe section. If there are not signs of wear on the brake pipe, the dealer will install a spacer clip to ensure sufficient clearance between the brake pipe and the body cross sill.
Power Train:driveline:driveshaft
What's wrong. Some pickup trucks, vans, and sport utility vehicles equipped with a hydraulic pump driveshaft that can fracture, resulting in immediate loss of hydraulic power steering assist. On certain vehicles equipped with hydro-boost power brakes, the same condition can result in loss of power assist for braking after the reserve pressure is depleted.
Risk. An inoperative pump can cause increased steering effort, and in hydro-boost equipped vehicles also increased braking effort, but does not completely eliminate the ability to steer or slow the vehicle.
Fix. Dealers will replace the hydraulic pump. The campaign began on february 14, 2005. Owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or gmc at 1-866-996-9463.
Structure:body:tailgate:hinge And Attachments
What's wrong. Certain pickup trucks have galvanized-braided-steel tailgate support cables used to support the tailgate in the full open (horizontal) position. Over time these cables can corrode and fracture when loads are applied to them.
Risk. If one cable fractures, the remaining cable may retain the tailgate in a horizontal position. If both cables fracture, the tailgate would drop and strike the top surface of the rear bumper. If anyone is sitting or standing on the horizontal surface of the tailgate when both cables fractured, they could fall and be injured. On vehicles without a bumper, the tailgate may drop to a lower position.
Fix. Dealers will replace the galvanized support cables with stainless steel support cables. In addition, dealers are to inspect the tailgate hinge and replace it, if necessary. The recall is expected to begin during april 2006. Owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 or gmc at 1-866-996-9463.

1999 GMC Sierra recalls 9
Steering:gear Box (other Than Rack And Pinion)
What's wrong. Vehicle description: extended cab 4-wheel drive pickup trucks. Some of these vehicles have a lower than specified torque on all three of the steering gear to frame attachment bolts. The bolts can loosen over time allowing the steering gear to move. This loosening can result in some unresponsive steering feel and some noise to the driver.
Risk. If this condition is ignored, the steering gear to frame can wear and/or fatigue the attaching bolts to the point of breakage or the bolts backing out. If all the bolts break or back out, the steering gear would separate from the frame resulting in a loss of steering control.
Fix. Dealers will retorque the steering gear to frame bolts to proper specifications.
1996 GMC Sierra recalls 2
Visibility:windshield Wiper/washer
What's wrong. Vehicle description: light duty pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, 2 and 4-wheel drive. Solder joints near the wiring harness connector can crack causing the windshield wipers to work intermittently.
Risk. This condition can result in inoperative wipers, reducing a driver's visibility, and increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Fix. Dealers will replace the wiper motor circuit board and cover.
Vehicle Speed Control
What's wrong. These vehicles were assembled with the throttle cable contacting the dash mat which could bind the throttle. This does not meet with the maximum return times required by federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 124, "accelerator control systems."
Risk. Consequence of non-compliance: the engine speed may not return to idle increasing the potential for a vehicle accident.
Fix. Dealers will inspect for adequate throttle cable to dash mat clearance, and if there is insufficient clearance, cut out a portion of the dash mat to provide proper clearance.
1995 GMC Sierra recalls 6
Seat Belts:front
What's wrong. If both the lap-belt and shoulder-belt energy management loops on the front seat belt assemblies release at or near the same time, acceleration forces can cause the buckle release mechanism to activate and allow the buckle to separate from the latch.
Risk. If the buckle released, the system would fail to provide adequate occupant restraint protection.
Fix. Dealers will remove the stitching that creates the energy management loop in the shoulder belt(s).
Seat Belts:front
What's wrong. These vehicles were built with front seat belt systems with no energy management loops and may not meet the head injury criteria requirements of fmvss no. 208, "occupant crash protection."
Risk. In the event of a vehicle crash, the occupants of these seats may not be properly restrained.
Fix. Dealers will replace the retractor portion of the seat belt assembly(s) with one having the newly designed energy-management twin-loop system.
Power Train:automatic Transmission
What's wrong. The transmission shift-cable lock clip can back out of its installed position resulting in a loss of cable adjustment. When the shift lever is placed in the "park" position, the "park" indicator light may not illuminate.
Risk. The vehicle can move unintentionally if the driver does not notice that the indicator light is not on and does not apply the parking brake.
Fix. Dealers will adjust the shift cable and install a lock clip.
Vehicle Speed Control
What's wrong. These vehicles were assembled with the throttle cable contacting the dash mat which could bind the throttle. This does not meet with the maximum return times required by federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 124, "accelerator control systems."

Fix. Dealers will replace the wiper motor circuit board and cover.
1993 GMC Sierra recalls 3
Seats:mid/rear Assembly
What's wrong. The rear bench seat does not meet the load requirements of fmvss 207, "seating systems," because the manual latch mechanism on the folding full bench rear seat was attached to the back frame lower cross tube with domed head steel rivets instead of the bolts specified.
Fix. The rivets must be replaced with the correct bolts.
Fuel System, Other:storage:tank Assembly
What's wrong. Vehicles altered by pas, inc. Have compressed natural gas fuel tanks that can develop stress corrosion, which crack the e-glass wrapping. This stress corrosion cracking can lead to tank ruptures.
Risk. If the tank ruptures, personal injury to individuals in or near the vehicle may occur.
Fix. Gm is offering to exchange these vehicles with a comparably equipped 1994 gasoline 1/2 or 3/4 ton gm pickup. If the owner chooses not to exchange the natural gas vehicle, gm will repurchase the vehicle.
Exterior Lighting:headlights
What's wrong. K2 motor is recalling 1,921 aftermarket headlamps of various models sold for use on the above listed vehicles. These headlamps are missing the amber side reflex reflector which fails to conform with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 108, "lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment."
Risk. Without the amber side reflex reflectors, the lighting visibility may be affected, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash.

Crash, injury, frontal impact, brakes did not respond quickly enough. Air bags did not deploy. *jb
Dt: purchased vehicle in november 2003, and on 12-22-03 had a minor accident. This occurred at a low speed at which consumer tapped another vehicle from behind. Took vehicle to a dealer. He checked the vehicle diagnosticians via computer, but the codes checked out as well as a test drive and inspection from the service department. This checked out as adequate, no problems found. About 2 months later, experienced a similar accident. Consumer called gm to inquire about this problem. Again taken to dealer, and no problem found. 5-7-05 experienced another accident that resulted in 3 injuries. The accident happened as consumer was approaching an intersection from about a distance of 60 feet and traveling about 45 mph when applied brake failure and suffered a complete failure with no brakes at all. "brakes would not even grab." glided through intersection striking another vehicle that resulted in 3 injuries. Took to dealer who checked vehicle and again found nothing wrong yet consumer feels as though brakes are not functioning properly. *ak
Crash: 1) traveling on interstate at 55-60 mph 2) poor braking ability to stop vehicle during panic stop.*ak
Brakes will go out while driving, and the pedal will go to the floor before the vehicle even starts to slow down. Contacted the dealer, and the dealer is not willing to do anything. *ak the consumer states that the ride control will not go on; there is an internal short-replaced the ride control, the consumer states that the abs light stays on-faulty speed sensors, and right front seat belt is not retracting. *scc
When brakes applied in panic stop, pedal goes to floor. This allows inadvertant contact with accelerator most of the times i tried to duplicate this after the accident using right foot to brake. Precise placement of right foot is necessary for me to prevent this( i have to look down at my foot to get it where it won't hit the accelerator in this situation). Measurements made indicate that when the brake pedal bottoms out due to the panic stop it travels about 1/2" past the accelerator, allowing contact with it if your feet are big like mine. The brake pedal will not travel far enough to allow this to happen during normal braking. This is a followup to odi#744510. I just got my truck out of the shop yesterday and duplicated the braking problems of the accident. I measured distance that i had to stop at about 200 ft. During the accident at 40 mph initial speed, i did not stop and hit stopped vehicle at about 10 mph while applying full pedal pressure with right foot. *ak
While following other normally traveling vehicles downhill - vehicles in front came to a stop - brake peddle was fully depressed...no response...brake fully applied 2nd time...no response...resulting in a rear end collision multiple vehicles...possible total of my 2007 sierra. Damages are very extensive . Insurance to investigate gm brake possible cause....airbag deployed chest & neck injuries....many other incidents involving gmc brake systems. Need immediate nhtsa investigations !! This could have caused a fatality. *tr
My wife while driving our 2006 gmc sierra was involved in a t-bone accident. She was driving south in her lane and was cut off causing her to hit the car that turned in front of her. She could not stop in time and when she hit the other car her airbag did not deploy. She died from broken ribs that puncher-ed her heart and she bled to death at work two hours later, the coroner determined her death to be from blunt force chest trauma.
While driving forward in traffic when car cut in front from the next lane to the right. This required emergency braking, but my speed was slow and truck should have stopped within the space available and the truck brakes seemed to feel as if they released on their own. Damage occurred to the car i rear ended and they rear-ended a car in front of them. Damage to all 3 vehicles was light enough that all were driven away after crash. On the way home i noticed the brakes were not working properly and lost stopping power shortly after depressing the brake pedal each time. After a 2 mile trip home like this i check the brake fluid and found it low. Then i saw fluid on the ground and found the brake line was dripping brake fluid. It appears to have ruptured from the pressure of the fluid inside. The lines were also seriously corroded. This appears to be a problem in materials and my 1985 suburban shows almost no signs of corrosion on the brake lines and is 20 years older. I was ticketed for reckless driving for not stopping because the car that cut in front made it all the way to the center of the lane before i struck it. That car was behind me and went around me and cut in front because i was ?driving too slow? According to her. I had left two to three full car lengths in front of me and this bothered her. I had a good amount of distance to stop the truck even after she cut in front, but the truck was unable due to the line breaking when i pushed the pedal hard. The line should be able to withstand that pressure. *tr
Brakes worked perfectly to stop vehicle on a steep downward hill in order to open a gate at the bottom of the hill of my driveway. After the gate was opened the vehicle proceeded down the hill coasting and there was a total brake failure when trying to slow down. The pedal went to the floor with no brakes whatsoever. The vehicle crashed into a tree to avoid going over a cliff. The vehicle has been well maintained with no warning of brake failure. Front and rear breaks failed at the same time. No warning brake light indicator on dash ever went on. This occurred on my property and driver and a passenger were both injured. Body shop indicated that the brake lines rusted out. This could have been a fatality if the failure took place on the road. *tr
While driving consumer applied the brakes and pedal went to the floor. Vehicle hit a meridian strip pole. Consumer was unable to maintain control of the vehicle, skidded into a guard rail, and vehicle flipped over twice. Upon impact, both frontal air bags did not deploy. Passenger and driver sustained neck and back injuries, and were transported by ambulance to a hospital. Vehicle was towed, and totaled by the insurance company. *ak *nm

Driving on highway in the evening road was wet due to earlier rain, traveling at 60-65 mph, when another car passed us and changed lanes erratically which caused the need to slow down. Upon engaging the brakes the abs failed to work, and vehicle's rear end lost traction and slid into next lane of traffic, then hit guard rail and spun truck around and hit bridge guard rail on opposite side, causing truck to startle and ride concrete bridge median and finally coming to rest in grass median. Both the driver and passenger air bags failed to deploy causing minor injuries to both occupants. Needless to say truck is totaled. *la

Takata recall: per dealership, 8/12/16 unable to make appointment to fix the recall number #49152. They have no idea when the parts will be in. Says it could tke up to one year!!!! We were in an accident with this vehicle. The truck was sandwiched between two cars, the airbag did not deploy at 35 mph., he was injured. After vehicle came back from bodyshop with $7000.00 worth of damage fixed, airbag light came on and has stayed on. We use this truck for our contracting business, so is it safe like gm recall letter states? I called gm back on july 1st, 2016, asked if there was a takata recall on this truck, i was told no. I told them the airbag light was on so why not recall based on other 2007 trucks? Part 573 safety recall report given to the nhtsa by gm clearly shows that all 2007 gmc sierras were to be recalled in area b, which is where i live.. High humidity. Memo was submitted may 27th, 2016. I just got my recall letter yesterday, august 11th. When i called gm to complain about that, and ask why the delay, i was hung up on. I want justice for airbags that do not deploy when they should.. What about we folk? There are many of us.the airbag light is still on< and now there are no parts to fix the problem. Our mechanic says when the light is on, the bags will not work. Great. No rental car from gm and no way to fix the problem. Should we not go to work? I doubt enterprise would like a contractor to use their rental truck as a "real" work truck like we do. Hence the problem.

I had purchased my sierra 1500 from chesrown dealership of delaware ohio. I had the truck for less than 60 days. I loved the truck very much but was very upset when an electrical fire started in under my hood. This happened the day after thanksgiving and since i had the factory stereo system i had no explanation for the start of the fire. It took the fire department a couple of minutes to get there and by that time the fire had spread from the engine throughout the wires down the firewall and into my trucks entirer. All that i could do was watch in horror as my truck was engulfed in flames from a far. I attempted to stop the fire from spreading inside and my hand was burnt. When the police used the the fire extinguisher from their cruiser it seemed to give it oxygen and spread it faster. I was devastated. *tr
I have had electrical problems with this truck since purchased. It has been in the service center 3 different times with no resolution. Now the engine will not turn over and when attempting to use booster cables to start the cables began to smoke and the copper wires melted. In an attempt to remove the cables before the other car ignited i was burned. Additionally the truck keys were not in the on position. That is i had not attempted to start the vehicle yet. *nlm

While slowly backing my 2008 gmc sierra pick-up truck into the garage, the mirror surface contacted the side of the garage, cracking the mirror. Insurance company recommended having an auto glass shop replace the mirror, but a small, flimsy plastic clip that had broken on the back of the mirror prevented them from doing so. Cut hand on broken mirror surface after removed by glass shop. Dealer estimated repair at $213.02. Gm corporate refused to acknowledge defect in mirror backing clip and refused any assistance whatsoever (district specialist level referral from owner relations center. I thought that flexible mirror assemblies were supposed to survive minor collisions - a previous gm vehicle (blazer) performed admirably in a 25 mph collision with a chrome f250 truck mirror w/no damage to the blazer mirror or assembly. The gmc "professional grade" (term used very loosely here) truck that i now own won't even stand up to a minor clip on the side of the garage at slow speed. Engineering defects are 1) mirror actuator assembly is of poor quality and/or workmanship and 2) mirror assembly moves up slightly when pivoting, which probably contributed to the breakage at such slow speed (was slowly backing up an incline into the garage). Apparently, i was not convincing enough to gm that they have a problem with flimsy mirrors - perhaps nhtsa and bbb can be more persuading. All i asked for was that they cover the flimsy plastic actuator and part of the $93 labor quoted for the job by the dealer. The mirror itself i have no qualms paying for. Old parts are available on the truck - i plan to drive my nearly new truck "as is" for a while as a symbol of gm's poor quality of workmanship and poor customer service. I also plan on telling as many people as possible about how flimsy gm makes their vehicles and how non-existent their customer support is. *tr
Hvac system became operational with the ignition turned off for an unknown period of time while the truck was parked in the garage. Relay resistor module overheated causing melting of the resistor and circuit board. Truck cabin and vicinity around the truck had a strong smell of burning plastic. Truck cabin filled with smoke. Abs system fails on panic stops. Suddenly applied pedal presseur locks brake pedal and provides little or no braking for approximately 1 second. I have been told by the dealership's service department that this is typical of all abs and that i need to train myself not to jam the brakes in an emergency. Vehicle was in shop in dec. 1999 for transmission repair and brakes were supposed to be checked. No check was noted on repair order, but service manager assured me that the mechanic had test driven the vehicle and it was ok. This problem seems to be a result of abs pump overreacting to suddenly applied pedal pressure and locking the pedal with back pressure before braking actually starts. I feel that the brakes should at least chirp the tires first. Currently vehicle is under repair from accident, but it will be taken to another dealership upon completion of this repair.*ak

The transmission violently shifts into gear upon acceleration from a stop or slow speed. This problem has occurred as many as ten times since the original date of purchase. On may 4th it occured so violently that the passenger in the rear hit his head on the rear window. In this incident the shift was so hard the rear wheels left the ground(all 4) and then the truck lurched forward. This is a serious defect that could caused harm to those inside the truck and could harm other drivers or pedestrians. The truck seems to go to a neutral operation even though you are in drive then when the rpm"s icrease to above 2,000 it suddenly shifts. I have taken the truck to the dealer 5 times and recently completed arbitration to take the truck back. While driving a brand new 2008 gmc sierra, 4 door, 4 wheel drive with only 872 miles on the odometer, going approximately 30 to 40 mph, the steering knuckle holding the tie rod broke on drivers front side. The driver impacted a pull camper trailer exploding the tire upon impact with the camper. The wheel rim was turned side ways as it impacted the tires of the camper flattening 2 tires curling the camper wheel rims and causing damage along the side of the camper. Then impacted a ford car down the drivers side that was following the camper. The impact caused the airbag to deploy in the truck. The tire on the truck was found over 200 feet from the impact. The markings on the tire were consistent with the steering knuckle breakage. Inspection by both the tow truck owner and the collision repair shop noticed that the part looked defective and pointed it out to the owner of the truck. The tow truck operator owns an identical truck and was very concerned about the safety of his own vehicle. This vehicle has not been repaired and is available for inspection. If failure would have occurred a few hours later on interstate 95 at 70 mph (a planned trip) the outcome could have been much different. *tr

I started to brake as this was downhill and a very large truck and i did not wish to increase speed as i followed the curve. My brakes did not respond and sank to the floor with no resistance. I had no steering ability either. I ended up in a head-on collision with a very large tree and the airbags failed. I split my head open on the steering wheel despite blocking my face with my forearms crossed; a de-gloving 10-12 inch laceration down to the skull that wraps from my nose bridge around to my right ear in the circular shape of the steering wheel. My right leg was pinned into the center dash area as the engine block and steering column were shoved into the cab. I had to be removed from my vehicle with the jaws of life by emergency response teams. I am lucky to be alive. Can a GMC Sierra tow? Towing & payload
As a pickup, the GMC Sierra is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package, on a curb weight near 8,640 lb.
What sets your Sierra's tow & payload rating:
- Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
- Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
- Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
- Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.
Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
