THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND REPAIRED HOWEVER THE FAILURE RECURRED. I RECENTLY WAS A VICTIM OF A HONDA RECALL ON FRONT BALANCER SHAFT SEAL, WHICH CAUSES OIL TO BE RAPIDLY PUMPED OUT ENGINE WITHOUT WARNING, CAUSING SERIOUS ENGINE DAMAGE. I TOOK MY CAR TO EMPIRE HONDA IN DENVER,CO (303)-399-8443. AT EMPIRE HONDA THEY ADMITTED IT WAS THE HONDA RECALL THAT CAUSED ME TO ALMOST WRECK ON THE HIGHWAY. THEY STATED THAT IT WAS COVERED UNDER THE HONDA RECALL AND THEY STARTED TO MAKE REPAIRS. WHEN THEY DISCOVERED THAT I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE, THEY STATED THEY WOULD ONLY COVER 1/3 OF THE COST. WHICH IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE, BECAUSE PROBLEM NEVER WOULD HAVE OCCURRED IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE "DEFECT" IN HONDA CARS. I HAVE THE PAPERS ON THE HONDA RECALL THAT STATES HONDA IS SUPPOST TO REPLACE MY ENGINE AT NO COST (FRONT BALANCER SHAFT OIL SEAL REPLACEMENT PG. 5 "D"). I KNOW YOU HAVE ACCESS TO THESE PAPERS PLEASE LOOK AT THEM, SO YOU CAN SEE THAT I AM CORRECT. HONDA IS TRYING TO WEASEL THEIR WAY OUT OF TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE "DEFECTS" IN HONDA CARS. OFTEN AFTER COMPLETING LONG FREEWAY DRIVE OF OVER 2HOURS IN LENGTH AND WHEN COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP AFTER EXITING THE FREEWAY, ENGINE RPM SUDDENLY JUMPED TO OVER 3,000 AND VEHICLE BEGAN TO SURGE FORWARD INTO THE INTERSECTION. HAD TO EXERT EXTREME FORCE ON THE BRAKE TO KEEP THE CAR FROM ACCELERATING FORWARD. AFTER PULLING OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH THE ENGINE STILL RACING UNCONTROLLABLY, SHIFTED INTO PARK AND BEGAN TO RELEASE THE BRAKE. AS BRAKE WAS RELEASED, ENGINE RPM BEGAN TO DROP, RETURNING TO NORMAL IDLE. TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED ENGINE. PROBLEM DID NOT HAPPEND AGAIN AS DRIVE RESUMED. TOOK VEHICLE TO HONDA DEALER ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASSIONS AFTER PROBLEM HAPPENED. DEALER UNABLE TO FIND CAUSE. REPORTED PROBLEM TO HONDA MOTOR CORPORATION. I PURCHASED A SET OF FOUR TIRES FROM COSTCO.COM IN FEBRUARY OF 2006[1]. THEY WERE DELIVERED TO AND INSTALLED AT MY LOCAL COSTCO TIRE CENTER. ON 28 AUG 2009, I EXPERIENCED A TIRE FAILURE WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY THAT WAS DETERMINED TO BE THE RESULT OF ITS VALVE STEM SEPARATING AT THE BASE AND LEADING TO RAPID DEFLATION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THIS WAS A NOVEL FAILURE MODE TO ME, BUT I INITIALLY CHALKED IT UP TO BAD LUCK AND HAD THE TIRE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY AT COSTCO. EXACTLY ONE WEEK LATER, I SUFFERED YET ANOTHER TIRE FAILURE AT HIGHWAY SPEED FOR A DIFFERENT TIRE. THE CAUSE, AS WITH THE FIRST FAILURE, WAS AGAIN THAT THE VALVE STEM HAD SEPARATED AT THE BASE. SUSPICIOUS OF THE COINCIDENCE, A SEARCH OF THE NHTSA/DOT DATABASES REVEALED THAT A RECALL HAD BEEN ISSUED IN MAY OF 2008 FOR THE MODEL OF VALVE STEM INSTALLED IN THE TIRES THAT HAD FAILED[2]. THE COSTCO TIRE CENTER MANAGER I SPOKE WITH CONFIRMED THAT THE RECALLED VALVE STEMS WERE THE SAME MODELS USED BY THEIR TIRE CENTER. BECAUSE OF THE DATE OF PURCHASE/INSTALLATION OF MY TIRES, THE VALVE STEMS THAT WERE INSTALLED ON MY VEHICLE PRECEDES AND IS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL HOWEVER. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE ON THE DATE NOTED BELOW WITH ONLY 56,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. THE DEALER IMPORTS LTD. IN ST . LOUIS, MO PUT THE WORDS EXEMPT ON THE TITLE IN THE PROCESS OF SELLING ME THIS VEHICLE. I DID NOT REALIZE HE PUT THIS ON THE TITLE DUE TO THE FACT THAT I COULD NOT SEE FROM ACROSS HIS DESK WHAT HE WAS WRITING AND I WAS ALSO SO EAGER TO BUY THE VEHICLE THAT I DID NOT READ THE BACK OF THE TITLE UNTIL I GOT TO THE DMV TO REGISTER IT IN MY NAME. I ASKED THE WORKER AT THE DMV WHAT THIS MEANT AND SHE SAID SHE DID NOT KNOW. THE CAR IS A '95 AND WAS CLAIMED TO ONLY HAVE ONE OWNER BUT JUST RECENTLY I STARTED HAVING TROUBLE WITH MY VEHICLE SUCH AS MY TRANSMISSION SHIFTING REALLY HARD AND ACTING AS IF IT IS ABOUT TO GO OUT. AT THIS MOMENT AS I WRITE TO YOU, WHEN I DRIVE MY VEHICLE IT HAS A LOUD RANCID ODOR COMING FROM THE FRONT END. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS THE GEARS IN MY TRANSMISSION THAT ARE BURNT AND PRODUCING THIS OFFENSIVE ODOR. I WAS TOLD THAT IT WOULD SOON GO OUT. NOW THE REASON FOR MY COMPLAINT IS THAT IF THIS CAR ONLY HAD 56,000 MILES ON IT AND I ONLY PUT IN ANOTHER 30,000 (AS OF DATE) AND I KEEP UP WITH THE REGULAR MAINTENANCE OF THE VEHICLE THEN WHY IS MY TRANSMISSION GOING OUT SO EARLY. WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE CAR WITH OUR CHILD AT AROUND 25 MPH, THERE WAS A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE, THE CAR SLOWED DOWN AND STARTED SHAKING ALONG WITH LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND POWER INTO THE WHEELS. SHE MANAGED TO STEER THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO A STOP AND UPON VISUAL INSPECTION THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL WAS TIPPED AND LOOKED AS IF IT HAD DECOUPLED FROM THE AXLE, AND THE FRONT SUSPENSION HAD DROPPED ON THE RIGHT SIDE. THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER AND WHILE THE CAR WAS BEING LIFTED ON THE TOW TRUCK I NOTICED METALLIC SHAVINGS THAT LOOKED LIKE WEAR DEBRIS COMING OUT OF THE VICINITY OF THE FRONT RIGHT WHEEL. THE DEALER HAS INFORMED ME THAT THE LOWER BALL JOINT WAS DESTROYED, AND THE BALL JOINT, THE FRONT AXLE AND THE CONTROL ARM NEED TO BE CHANGED. I ASKED THE DEALER IF THERE HAD BEEN ANY SIGNS OF CORROSION AND THEY SAID NO. THE CAR HAD ALSO UNDERGONE A MAJOR SERVICING ABOUT 2 MONTHS BACK AT THE SAME DEALERSHIP AND NOTHING WAS NOTICED AT THAT TIME. THE FAILURE APPEARS HIGHLY UNUSUAL SINCE THIS IS A 7 YEAR OLD CAR THAT HAS BEEN DEALER-SERVICED REGULARLY AND THERE WERE NO PRIOR SIGNS OF AN IMPENDING, SUDDEN FAILURE. ON NOVEMBER 16, I TOOK IT TO CLASSIC HONDA OF SAN MARCOS, TX--DEALER #208339--FOR A CHECK UP. THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE SRS CONTROL UNIT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE IS A 1995 HONDA ACCORD STATION WAGON, MANUFACTURED IN JANUARY 1995. THE MILEAGE WAS 89,000 MILES WHEN THE PROBLEM OCCURRED. THE OWNER'S MANUAL STATES "WHEN THE CAR IS 10 YEARS OLD, HAVE THE DEALER INSPECT THE [SRS] SYSTEM." SO THE EXPECTATION IS THAT THE SYSTEM SHOULD FUNCTION NORMALLY FOR AT LEAST 10 YEARS. THE SRS SYSTEM IS ONE OF THE SAFETY EQUIPMENT, MUCH LIKE THE SEAT BELT. I KNOW HONDA HAS A LIFETIME WARRANTY ON THE SEAT BELT AND THE REPLACEMENT MUFFLER. I FEEL THAT THE SRS SYSTEM SHOULD CARRY A LIFETIME WARRANTY AS WELL BECAUSE IT PROVIDES ADDITIONAL SAFETY. I CALLED THE MANUFACTURER ON NOVEMBER 22, 2004 TO REPORT THE PROBLEM AND ASKED THEM TO PAY FOR THE CONTROL UNIT REPLACEMENT. THEY DENIED. ABS LIGHT CAME ON WHILE ATTEMPTING TO STOP VEHICLE AT A STOP SIGN. THE VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP, SPONGINESS OCCURRED WHEN APPLYING BRAKES, THEN FAILURE. CAR WENT THRU INTERSECTION BEFORE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO APPLY EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP VEHICLE. DEALER MECHANIC NOTICED SLOW LEAK ABS MODULATOR/ACCUMULATOR SYSTEM, AND RECOMMENDED REPLACEMENT. ABS UNIT REPLACED AT 71,035 MILES. 8/2010. COST FOR REPAIRS $1600, MUST REPLACE BOTH AS 1 UNIT, DESPITE NO FAILURE WITH ACCUMULATOR. AT 104,000 MILES, 6/2014, THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON, AND BRAKES WERE EXAMINED AT BRAKE, TIRE, FRONT END, AND ALIGNMENT SHOP, WHERE THEY HAVE BEEN CONTINUALLY MAINTAINED. AN EXAMINATION WAS DONE AND NO SIGNS OF UNUSUAL WEAR OR DAMAGE TO FRONT OR REAR BRAKES, TEST DRIVE DONE BY TECHNICIAN. RECOMMENDED ABS UNIT BE DIAGNOSED. DIAGNOSTIC PERFORMED AT SHOP, DETERMINED THAT ABS MODULATOR NEEDED REPLACEMENT AGAIN. IT HAD BEEN 32,965 MILES SINCE THE ORIGINAL ABS MODULATOR WAS REPLACED. CHECKED IN WITH DEALER AND THE ABS MODULATOR WAS ONLY COVERED FOR 12,000 MILES. ABS UNIT NOT REPLACED. AT 117,141, 3/2016, THE BRAKES FAILED AGAIN. WHILE BACKING UP AND APPLYING BRAKES THEY BECAME SPONGY, WENT TO FLOOR, DESPITE PUMPING, AND FAILED AGAIN, CAUSING VEHICLE TO BACK INTO WOODEN BENCHES, DAMAGING CAR PAINT. DEALER ESTIMATION FOR ABS UNIT REPAIRS IS $2300. PRESENTLY, ABS UNIT NOT REPLACED. THESE OVERWHELMING COMPLAINTS, FROM VEHICLE OWNERS, REGARDING THE ABS MODULATOR UNIT, ALONG WITH TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS, REGARDING THE 1995 HONDA ACCORD, SUPPORT A RECALL BEING ISSUED FOR THE 1995 HONDA ACCORD ABS UNIT. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1995 HONDA ACCORD. WHEN SHIFTING, THE VEHICLE BANGS INTO GEAR AND THE TRANSMISSION JUMPS AND MAKES A LOUD NOISE. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A MEINEKE DEALER AND THEY DIAGNOSED THAT THE MUFFLER AND CATALYTIC CONVERTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AND THE RIMS WERE BENT. THE UNDERBODY OF THE VEHICLE HAS AN INCH AND A HALF GAP, IN WHICH THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE CAN BE SEEN. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO HONDA AND THEY STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION, REAR BRAKES, ROTORS, MOTOR MOUNT, AND AIR BAGS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. IN ADDITION, THE RIMS WERE BENT. A FEW MONTHS AFTER THE REPAIR, SHE BEGAN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE SRS CONSISTENTLY ENGAGING, AND HAD THE SRS RESET ON FOUR DIFFERENT OCCASIONS SINCE GETTING A NEW ONE ON 12/27/1997. VEHICLE ABS STARTED MAKING NOISE AROUND 90,000 MILES AND WAS SLOWLY LOSING FLUID. LIGHT CAME ON PERMANANTLY AT 100,000 MILES AND ABS MALFUNCTIONED. AMERICAN HONDA IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. TSB 96-05 WAS ISSUED. DEALER STATED IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM AND THE MODULATER COSTS IS APPROX. $1,100. NO RECALL WAS ISSUED KNOWING THE PLUGS ON THE ABS MODULATOR WERE NOT PROPERLY TIGHTENED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS SHIPPED FROM THE FACTORY. THIS CAUSED A LEAK OF BRAKE FLUID FROM THE SYSTEM, WHICH APPEARS TO HAVE SUBSEQUENTLY CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE MASTER CYLINDER PRESSURE IN THE MAIN BRAKING SYSTEM. CAUSING THE BRAKE PEDAL TO GO TO THE FLOOR AND A NEED TO BE PUMPED TO OBTAIN PRESSURE IN THE BRAKING SYSTEM. HONDA CLAIMS IT IS DUE TO THE AGE OF THE CAR BUT THE TSB 96-050 CLEARLY IDENTIFIES LIABILITY OF THE ABS SYSTEM SHIPPED WITH IMPROPERLY TIGHTEN PLUGS. THIS IS WHAT THEY ARE REQUIRING OWNERS TO TAKE THE CAR BACK AND PAY FOR. *AK

RE: EXHAUST VALVE SPRINGS - CAR CONTINUALLY STALLED. RE: AIR CONDITIONER - LEAK BEHIND GLOVE COMPARTMENT. RE: CRACKED ENGINE BLOCK- DISCOVERED WHEN MECHANIC WAS LOOKING FOR AIR CONDITIONER LEAK. FIXED CRACK AND REMOUNTED ENGINE BLOCK WITHOUT USING EXISTING SCREW BECAUSE THE SCREW WAS CAUSING STRESS TO THE BLOCK.

WHILE TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 35MPH THE BALANCE SHAFT SEAL BLEW OUT. ALSO, OIL LIGHT CAME ON & VEHICLE STARTED TO LOSE FUEL. PULLED TO SIDE OF ROAD. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALERSHIP & THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE OWNER THE PROBLEM WAS NORMAL. MANUFACTURER KNOWS ABOUT THE BALANCE SHAFT SEAL. *AK

WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED UP THERE IS A HUMMING NOISE, AND THE ABS LIGHT COMES ON AND STAYS ON. WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED IN WET CONDITIONS VEHICLE SLIDES. ALSO, TRACTION IS DECREASED UNDER THESE CONDITIONS. THERE IS A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM, BUT THIS VEHICLE IS NOT INCLUDED. THE DEALER HAS BEEN CONTACTED. *AK

MY 1995 HONDA ACCORD EX SEDAN HAS HAD AN EXHAUST BUZZ SINCE THE DAY AFTER I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE BRAND NEW FROM FREELAND HONDA. NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS BY THE DEALER TO CORRECT PROBLEM HAVE FAILED. I WAS TOLD BY HONDA TO "LIVE WITH THE PROBLEM" BECAUSE SOME HONDAS MAKE THIS NOISE AND WE CAN'T FIX IT. IT IS A CONSTANT BUZZ AT 1800 RPM'S. NOW THAT THE VEHICLE IS 4 YEARS OLD, THE "BUZZ" HAS GROWN TO A CONSTANT VIBRATION WHICH CAN BE FELT IN THE STEERING WHEEL AND THE BRAKE PEDAL, AS WELL AS THROUGH THE FLOOR AND SEATS. *AK
