My vehicle has never missed an oil change or maintenance event yet at my last oil change my engine had burned through all its oil and no low oil light or check engine light came on. Hyundai is refusing to cover it under their warranty stating it occurred due to maintenance neglect even though all oil changes and maintenance events receipts were provided to Hyundai and are available in car fax.

Engine went into limp mode and a knocking sound was heard. Had car inspected and oil changed but no improvements occurred. Took car to dealership and it failed engine test. Hyundai will not cover replacement under open extended warranty.

At 70,000 miles the Santa Fe was consuming oil at 1.5 quarts per 1000 miles. It is a 2.4 engine. The Hyundai dealership did an oil consumption test and verified the consumption. They want to do a combustion chamber cleaning and have me run it 1000 miles. The vehicle is unsafe because this defective engine could seize up at any time. I am trying to have Hyundai USA replace the engine asap. I have all my maintenance records and two warranties.

My 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe suffered a crankshaft/bearing failure identical to NHTSA Recall 17V578000. Hyundai states my VIN was not included in the recall, but the vehicle has the same 3.3L engine, the same failure, and the same symptoms described in the recall bulletin. The engine has never been replaced. The defect appears broader than the recall VIN range. They are refusing to replace the defective engine.

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while driving at slow speeds, the vehicle briefly shifted erratically, slamming into gear and violently lunging forward. The vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to another dealer, who was also unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was unknown.

The car has intermittent hard upshift from 1st to 2nd gear. It feels as if the transmission seems to slip for a moment then jolts the car, making a hard bang noise and jerking forward, and at times spinning the rear wheels. If I stop the car, turn off the engine and restart it clears the issue. It does not throw off any codes. I have taken it to the Hyundai Dealer several times and they have verified it with me while in the car but since it does not give a code or warning lights they tell me they cannot fix it. Hyundai corporate has also been made aware. This started at 77K miles and has been occurring for the last 3 years. I have brought it into hyundai over a dozen times for the concern. I have several videos of the issue

I was driving down the road to get dog food when all the electrical went black on the car and it started down shifting, it quickly came back on It put my safety and others around me at risk as I was on [XXX] in Eustis a high traffic area in the middle lane and close to nowhere to get on the side. The next day it had started knocking - the rod bearings, I turned it off quickly and that was the last time I had turned it on. I had taken it to the shop and they said the engine will have to be replaced. We have had this (2nd owner) car a little over a year. Owe 24k on it and they are telling me it will be 14k to replace the engine. Towed it to our local Hyundai where they are saying the same and there is no recall on it. Driving down rd at 35 mph felt a sudden jolt and loud noise, car lost power and all lights came on. Coasted to a safe driveway and shut it down. Tried to re- start and it was a loud racket so immediately turned back off. Crazy thing is the oil was just changed , no leaks in garage or warning lights. Now I’m stuck trying to replace an engine that should’ve lasted more than 5 years!

“My 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.4 has been experiencing severe oil consumption issues for a long time. I previously completed a combustion chamber cleaning service as recommended, but the problem continued. On November 10, the Hyundai dealership confirmed the engine oil was low and topped it off. On December 10, the oil was completely empty again with no warning lights. The dealer has documented the issue and recommended an engine replacement, but Hyundai is refusing to approve the repair . The vehicle continues to lose oil rapidly, creating a serious safety risk of engine failure or stalling while driving. This appears to be a known safety-related engine defect affecting this model.”

This vehicle has experienced numerous serious failures, including two engine replacements, a transmission replacement, and persistent safety system malfunctions. The Downhill Brake Control (DBC) system remains stuck in the "on" position, and the traction control warning light stays illuminated. These issues directly compromise vehicle safety and stability, particularly on hilly or wet roads. Despite extensive service at Arapahoe Hyundai in Centennial, CO, these problems continue to return. The vehicle has been in the shop multiple times and was most recently in service for nearly 30 days. My wife was stranded at the dealership today due to the same unresolved safety system failure. Dealer communication has been poor, and repairs are often incomplete, requiring immediate return visits. The repeated failure of safety-critical systems, combined with the inability to resolve the issues long-term, presents a significant safety concern for both my family and others on the road. I am requesting NHTSA to investigate whether this is part of a broader defect pattern affecting 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe models and if a recall is warranted.

Was driving on [XXX] (approximately 130 miles from home), when a loud clunking and metal on metal sound was heard, the causing power loss, slowing of vehicle and necessitated immediate pulling over to the side of the road. The was a catastrophic internal engine failure which caused the spark plugs to blow out. There were no warnings. The car was just inspected and had an oil change earlier in the month. The vehicle suffered sudden power loss and violent metal-on-metal destruction while transporting my child on [XXX] (130 miles from home). Certified diagnostics from Kennett Square Quick Lane Auto confirm: "Multiple spark plugs forcibly ejected due to severe internal engine damage – full replacement required". Quick Lane said they would not be able to replace the Engine. so the Vehicle was towed to Reliable Car Connection (West Chester, PA). I had tried to make an appointment at Piazza Hyundai, but the did not have appointments until Mid August. Result: Stranded overnight requiring hotel and towing/tolls at personal expense (receipts available). This traumatic event directly stems from Hyundai’s acknowledged Theta II defects. Hyundai’s Documented Failures: Recall Compliance: Recall 996 (Piazza Hyundai, 4/12/24) Recall 953 (1/31/19) Recall 163 (7/18/17) Maintenance: All services performed per Hyundai schedules (records available). Unresolved Defects: This failure matches: Recall 20VH4 (Lifetime Warranty Extension) Recall 20VH5 TSB 20-01-033H Current Status: Vehicle at Reliable Car Connection (West Chester, PA) after Piazza Hyundai’s unacceptable 6-week delay. T3G Campaign 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport AWD, 116000 miles. Purchased from a dealer in VA [XXX]. Never would have purchased if engine issues had been disclosed. The letter re:T3G campaign went out to dealers/service managers from Hyundai (of which I have a copy) is dated for October 2019. We never received any information regarding a T3G campaign. We took my car to the dealership on 12/16/24. (Valdese, NC). In 5 hours, they said they ran diagnostics & found the P0302 Misfire code. Without running further tests, they adamantly claimed there was a dead cylinder & the only fix was to replace the engine. Note: Spark plugs were replaced 2 weeks before this visit on Dec 1, 2024. They refused to listen to my concerns about the T3G campaign. Said vehicle didn't have that issue. That they couldn't run the tests because the P1326 code wasn't present (but it was in Sept). They didn't do anything about the current open recalls. They said they didn't have time. Corporate confirmed that my vehicle has had the correct service campaigns completed to qualify for the T3G campaign. I have called corporate twice-No response. We are very upset over the lack of care and solutions. We gave consent for work & nothing was done. The service manager was practically shouting that this car would leave me stranded, it wasn’t safe to drive, & that the only option to fix was to replace the engine/get rid of it. I was basically told it wasn't worth fixing. Putting a new engine in would equal than the car is worth at trade in value. No one can give me a guarantee that a new engine (even brand new from the factory) would not have the same problem that is happening now. Make this right by immediately authorizing an engine replacement for my vehicle to include a loaner vehicle & tow charge cover. I am aware of the class action lawsuit from 2021. Hyundai refuses to issue a recall for this engine issue. Please see attached letter for more information. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Sunroof exploded It sounded like a bomb went off and had my inside cover been opened I don’t know if I would’ve veered off the road been injured or injured someone else in the process. As it is I don’t know where the big huge piece of glass went. I do have pictures I reported it to my insurance company and also to corporate Hyundai. I was shaken up until the next day.

SPONTANEOUS PANORAMIC SUNROOF EXPLOSION - SERIOUS SAFETY DEFECT On October 12, 2025, at approximately 10:00 PM, while my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport was being driven on Interstate 85 near Greenville, South Carolina, the panoramic sunroof spontaneously exploded without any external impact or warning. What Happened: - My son was traveling at highway speed in normal driving conditions and he said it sounded a shotgun being shot at close range. The explosion created a period of dangerous distraction. - There was NO impact from road debris, rocks, or any external object - The sunroof suddenly and violently shattered, making a loud explosive sound - A few tempered glass fragments entered the passenger cabin, by the vast majority blew out of the vehicle. - The incident created an immediate safety hazard for vehicle occupants and for other vehicles who may have been following. - Visibility was not compromised, but due to glass exploding, my son had to drive on the shoulder of the Interstate at a slow speed with his hazard lights on in order to make it safely to an exit. Safety Concerns: - Sudden Loss of Structural Integrity - The sunroof exploded outward without warning - Glass in Passenger Cabin - Tempered glass fragments fell into the vehicle, endangering occupants - Driver Distraction - The sudden explosion and noise created a dangerous distraction at highway speed - Visibility Impairment - Glass debris and the sudden opening affected visibility - Weather Exposure - Immediate exposure to wind and weather elements at highway speed - Ongoing Safety Risk - This defect affects thousands of vehicles still on the road What Did NOT Happen: - No collision or impact with another vehicle - No road debris struck the vehicle - No rocks or projectiles hit the sunroof - No hail or weather-related damage - No recent sunroof operation or manipulation - No aftermarket modifications or repairs This was a spontaneous failure of a defective component during normal vehicle operation.

back up camera operates very erratically. some times it works properly, some of the time it is very slow to engage. other times it comes on after i have completed my rearward movement, and some times it comes on after shifting into drive. then there are times t never comes on. i spoke to a dealer tech and was told there are a lot of them like that. if i wanted to spend about $900, they might be able to fix it. this has been going on for a couple of years.

Backup camera and it is available for inspection. I had the car in the dealership for 2 recalls July 3. When I picked up the car backup camera was blank. Dealership states it was a coincidence and nothing they did. Immediately took the car back for repair. I was told they don't know what's wrong., they checked the wiring all good, replaced the camera and it still didn't work. I've been in contact for weeks with Hyundia they don't have any answers yet.

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel was jumping from left to right. The contact stated that the ESC and ABS warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was taken back to the same local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the passenger’s side wheel speed sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. Additionally, the steering column housing needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. While driving, the steering wheel had extensive play. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The approximate failure mileage was 6,200.

Steering wheel sticks and will not turn or adjust until forcefully manipulated , then snaps sharply causing a change in direction of the vehicle. Dangerous to our family while driving.
Dec 12, 2023
The car has a steering defect. The defect causes the car to wonder from lane to lane requiring the driver to constantly make corrections. This is especially dangerous when you are between two vehicles. The car has been back to the dealer numerous times and they state that there is no problem with the steering. Hyundai National claims claims that the defect does not exist.
Dec 08, 2023
While driving the vehicle there is a noticeable “locking or sticking” in the the steering wheel while driving. This issue is most notable at a driving speed over 35 mph. Due to the vehicle not having a steering fluid reservoir, it is not possible to see if the power steering fluid is below the recommended levels.
Dec 03, 2023
The steering is sticky or notchy, it gets stuck like it moves around grooves instead of being linear. Since its not linear, every notchy movement requires a correction towards the opposite side and that results in over correction and this way the car is zig-zaggy. This becomes very prominent as speeds more than 40 mph, and quite significant on highways. Several time reporting to dealer, over the 6+ years of ownership, they have failed to recognize the issue and provide a fix. Several people have reported the same and can be viewed by searching for sticky steering problem and its not restricted to sante fe models. This is highly dangerous on the highways constantly having to correct and overcorrect and increases driver fatigue. Hyundai fails to recognize this hazardous steering issue and provide a voluntary fix or recall.

I bought this car a 2017 in December 2023. The first time I got the oil change they told me there’s no oil on a stick and then couple months later again no oil on the stick so I took it to my personal mechanic. He said there is an oil consumption problem so you advise me to take it where I bought it from. I had to go up there for 1000 mile test and then a 500 mile which I was low. Seems like every two weeks I had to put oil in it so where I brought the vehicle from told me to go to Hyundai. Hyundai only did one oil consumption test. I have a records of oil changes from Valvoline, my personal mechanic, Tradition Ford and one from Hyundai. Tradition Ford, where I got the car from with disappointment because I had a lot of proof that I was burning oil. There was no leak. There was no smoke at all. Besides it being under 10 years old, I was under 100,000 mile warranty and I had an extended warranty. tradition Ford where I bought it from took that one back however I lost $7000 from the down payment. I bought new tires for it, new battery, remote starter, spark, plugs, and rain guards. I still have all my papers from that vehicle 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe sport 2.4 engine liter.

In May 2025, the vehicle (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe) developed severe sluggishness. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and I was told the engine would need to replaced due to a recall. Four months later (week of Sept 14 {exact date not known}), the engine was replaced and the vehicle made available for pickup. I drove it home (8.1 miles) and all seemed normal. It sat in the driveway for approx. one week. On Sept 22, 2025, I drove to the store (8.4 miles round-trip). On the way to the store, the engine light came on. I immediately called the dealership and reported the problem. The car was taken in that night (a trip of 8.1 miles) and left at the dealership. On Sept 23, 2025, I was informed that the intake manifold needed to be replaced (this had caused the engine light to come on) at my cost of approx $1000. The car remains at the dealership (unused by me). Online research revealed that if debris had been found in the manifold, it was to be replaced along with the engine (Hyundai TSB #22-EM-010H DATE JULY 2022). The following has been cut-and-pasted from the web: The issue of the intake manifold not being replaced or cleaned after an engine failure is a direct result of the core defect. When the old engine failed, it likely shed metallic debris and shrapnel. That debris could have traveled into other components, including the intake manifold. If the manifold is not cleaned or replaced, the new engine draws that old metallic debris back in, causing it to fail again almost immediately. NHTSA indirectly mandated that the repair must be COMPLETE AND EFFECTIVE. When a dealership refuses a critical part of that repair (like cleaning the manifold), they are effectively carrying out an incomplete remedy to a safety recall, which is a violation of the manufacturer's federal obligation under the Consent Order. It is my contention that residual debris in the intake manifold caused the warning light and will quite possibly damage the new engine.

This car has oil consumption issues due to a manufacturer defect, design of the engine 2.4L. This has been on going for the last three years and is getting worse. Now is affecting the catalytic converter because of it burning so much oil. The Hyundai dealership will do nothing for me. Now they want $4,500 for a new catalytic converter. I can’t afford a new car and this should be an expense of Hyundai. In my research I have found there are thousands of cars on the road with this issue. They knew about this years ago and just kept making the cars and selling them . They should be helping me and all they are doing is denying that this has a problem. What recourse do I have. Why hasn’t there been a recall?
Aug 14, 2025
From the day we purchased this used vehicle, the check engine light came on. We had to have the catalytic converter replaced next. Now we’re having oil leak issues. Multiple oil leaks have been repaired, and I’ve most recently paid over $700 to have this issue resolved. A week after the Hyundai dealership repaired it, the vehicle is leaking oil again. We have to add oil about every 5-7 days. Today we were told that my [XXX] daughter needs to drive it until the engine goes out, and not to add any oil. This is not only unacceptable, it’s also unsafe! INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The engine had no oil. No indication was given by the dashboard lights. I heard a ticking noise soon after I started my car. My husband checked the oil; it was bone dry. I still had 200 more miles before my next oil change. Needless to say, the engine would have blown up if I hadn’t payed attention to the noise coming from the vehicle. In fact, this happened about a year ago, I just thought it was a fluke. Since this is the second incident, this is not a fluke and something needs to be done. We can’t afford to have a vehicle blow up on us. There was no sign of leaking on the driveway.

Complete failure of brake system. After the vehicle parked, a significant puddle of brake fluid formed under the rear axle area (mid between rear wheels. It appears that a break line failed. When driving front right brake caliper locked up and would not release, after replacing brake pads, rotors and calipers on both front right brakes. I drove my car about a week and car brakes locked up again…I then had to have my car towed to the mechanics. Where they discovered that the ABS module was bad, this is the same part that is causing fires in many others Hyundai vehicles but somehow my car was exempt from the recall and after having issues with getting the part and having to rent a car and borrow a car for several weeks I finally got my car fixed almost $3000.00 later. Seems to me this part is a common problem for many people. Thankfully I was not in an accident due to the brake locking up, I will say I had a little fear when driving my car for several weeks after the 2 incidents.

All safety lights AEB, TMPS, ABS, on. The car breaking as driven due to this issue. Reported to Hyundai Headquarters. They said it was a major safety issue but not willing to pay for repairs especially since it's a safety issue. There many reports online of people experiencing the same issue with new cars as well. Having to pay for this is not very noble of Hyundai.

The left rear brake caliper broke off and was hanging next to the wheel. The brake fluid was leaking and had leaked out. it is available for inspection. This occurred while driving home from an errand. Had it occurred earlier on a steep hill down the mountain, the results would have been catastrophic, probably resulting in loss of life. The vehicle has yet to be inspected by the manufacturer but will be soon. No warning lights just noise of caliper banging against car and loss of brakes. Event occurred close to home problem discovered there.

Twice my car's gear shifter went from Drive to the right hand side of the gear box. 90% or more of the power cut out immediately creating a massive safety issue. In both instances, i was pulling into traffic after making complete stops at stop signs. The first time, i turned left, the second time I turned right. The shift was untouched by me as it is not a stick shift car. Hyundai charged me close to $400 for the privledge of telling me that I or something bumped the shifter to the right. Also they claim that the shifter is designed to go into low gear if it does go to the right. a low gear should provide more power not cut it out. They refuse to fix the issue, but wanted me to bring it in so they could duplicate a problem that has occurred twice in four months.

The traction control system engages too frequently and makes the vehicle unable to accelerate and far too long to disengage, endangering my family during right turns onto lanes with traffic. the traction control system will engage even when there is no loss of traction, only a moderate acceleration with some turn angle. this has caused near accidents about once a month, that both me and my wife experience. there are no active recalls. all recall work was completed last year. this issue has persisted for the length of my ownership, last occuring only about week ago, and about once to 2 times a month.

I OWN A HYUNDAI 2017 SANTA FE. I, MY HUSBAND, AND MY DAUGHTER ARE EXPERIENCING (FROM THE TIME OF PURCHASE & REPORTED TO THE HYUNDAI DEALER) A SERIOUS & DANGEROUS LAG WITH ACCELERATION. THIS USUALLY HAPPENS WHEN EITHER THE CAR IS STOPPED AND THEN I GO TO TURN, OR TURNING AT A VERY LOW RATE OF SPEED AROUND A CORNER. WHEN I PUSH DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL TO GO, IT TAKES OFF ABRUPTLY OR WITH A SURGE. THIS IS CONCERNING, ESPECIALLY IF A CAR IS FOLLOWING BEHIND ME. I ALSO NOTICE IT WHEN STOPPED AT A LIGHT, GOING STRAIGHT ALSO BUT NOT NEARLY AS MUCH AS WHEN I AM MAKING A TURN.

The car has been consuming all the engine only after 700 miles. This has been a constant issue since December 2024 and the issue has been brought up with Hyundai dealership in Denville, NJ and Hyundai Corporate as well. Hyundai dealership in Denville, NJ performed 2 oil consumption tests, which the vehicle failed both test only after 700 miles as it consumed all the engine oil. They refused to do further investigation or recall the engine as it should be covered under Hyundai TXXI warranty given the Hyundai Engine II Class Action Settlement a few years ago. The vehicle has broken down on me on the highway a few times and has put my family at risk and danger due to the negligence of the Hyundai dealership in Denville, NJ and Hyundai Corporate refuel to resolve the issue. Now the car does not start at all some days thus it has impacted my work and my ability to provide for my family

The car started jerking and the check engine light came on. I had to have it towed to my house. We can't get the car to do anything now. We get it started for 5 seconds, the engine completely dies

The act is consuming all the engine oil only after 500-700 miles. It has been recored and tested at Town Hyudnia dealership in Danville, NJ after it failed 2 engine oil composition tests but the dealership did not replace the engine nor put in a. request to Corporate Hyundai to replace the engine as it should be covered by the 2.4L engine lawsuit a fe years ago.

My 2017 Hyundai Santa fe sport burns through 2qts of oil between oil changes (every 3000 miles). I check my oil once a week to make sure I have adequate oil to ensure my engine doesn't blow, Hyundai has open recalls on the 2017 models of my vehicle but my VIN number is not included...I have complained to Hyundai corporate and also the dealer and they state that I have to do an oil consumption test, at cost to me, to prove that their engine is defective...I first noticed this issue about 1 month after I purchased my vehicle, I was driving and my oil light flashed on for less than a second, I stopped at my sisters house and let my engine cool down and checked my oil and there was absolutely none... I refilled it and then began checking my oil weekly. I add at least 1/4-1/2 quart per week between oil changes. Every time I take my car in for an oil change they have to add an extra quart and make me aware that my vehicle is burning a significant amount of oil... This is my everyday car, I use it to get back and forth to work, I transport my children in this vehicle. There is a 953 Recall and also 218 but my VIN is not included.

I have Hyudai Santafe 2017 Sport, bought it from dealership in 2020 with 46,000 Miles and in around past 4/5 years added 30,000 miles. Which is not much, in the past one year i have noticed that engine oil is burning faster than usual. On every oil change after driving between 1200 and 1500 miles the oil engine sign blinks and upon checking needed 2 Quarts of oil. I spoke the dealership and they are not very helpfull. Also they did the oil combustion test which i was charged. Later i was advised to do. ("Good morning, Just got off the phone with you sir warranty won't cover it due to the vehicle being out of manufacture warranty and mileage. My technician recommended starting with combustion chamber cleaning which would be around 1200 before taxes and shop supplies. Combustion chamber cleaning is the process of removing carbon buildup from the combustion chamber and intake valves of a fuel-injection engine. to see if that fixes the problem that you are having with the car burning oil. If that step doesn't work we we would submit a warranty pa again, to see if they would cover a new engine." Please advise what should be my next step, as per my mechanic the only solultion right now i have is keep adding oil carefully.

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that the automatic power door locks failed to operate as needed. Due to the failure, the contact had to manually unlock and lock all doors inside the vehicle. In addition, the contact stated that the button to unlock the gas cap also failed to operate as needed. The vehicle was not yet diagnosed or repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.

The liftgate randomly closes and I have to jump out of the way to avoid it hitting me. This obviously poses a huge risk to my young children when they are nearby. In addition to that, the liftgate will sometimes only open a quarter or half of the way, sometimes all the way then suddenly reverse and start closing, and sometimes does not open at all. I've gone on Hyundai forums online and found numerous other people with the exact same complaint. Seems to be effecting cars made from 2016 - 2020. I have multiple videos of this but can't upload them as you only accept pictures.

On June 22, 2023, I went to start my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe in a shopping center parking lot. I had recently driven from the Pgh airport to Monroeville and stopped to run errands. Upon reentering my vehicle I used the push button start to start the car. The engine started and the center computer screen turned on, however the dashboard did not light up and I was not able to shift into Reverse. I cycled the car ~5 times trying to get it going, but the same start-up happened. Upon calling husband (after trying to start another few times) he recommended that I look at the fuses. At this point I opened the driver side door and was outside looking at the fuse panel. This is when I heard someone shouting from the highway across from the parking lot that my car was on fire. I looked at the rear of my car and saw flames coming from the rear bumper. I quickly stepped away from the vehicle. The entire drivers side of the rear bumper was engulfed in flames. Both the police and fire departments came to the scene. We were collectively able to extinguish the flames and the car was totaled.

Hyundai Safety Concerns. The details of the incidents are as follows I own a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe sport turbo on Saturday June 24th while driving down the palmetto expressway at about 70 mi an hour the vehicle suddenly stopped. It was a very dangerous situation with my family aboard we were lucky to have Florida highway patrol toys to a safety location. The car was completely dead and the vehicle was told to homestead Hyundai dealership for repairs 4 days after delivering we received a call letting us know that the computer had been damaged due to a oil leak in the engine that was repaired by them 10 months prior. It has come to our attention that there are recalls for this vehicle for crankshaft problems it is a concern that this is a safety hazard for us and that the dealership is not being transparent with us is the consumer. We have emailed Hyundai Motors Corporation and filed a complaint. I kindly request your immediate attention to this matter, as the safety of my family and other drivers is at stake. I trust that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will conduct a thorough examination of the reported incidents, the dealership's actions, and the potential risks associated with the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport Turbo. Your intervention and expertise are vital in ensuring consumer safety and holding accountable those responsible for any negligence or lack of transparency. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. I eagerly await your response and hope for a swift resolution to this alarming situation.

# **NHTSA Complaint Answers** ### **1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request?** The **engine** failed due to **sudden and extreme oil consumption** that resulted in the engine being completely dry of oil despite regular maintenance. This caused internal damage including **CVVT (Continuous Variable Valve Timing) system failure**, bearing damage, and a complete engine seizure. Yes, the failed engine is fully available for inspection upon request. The vehicle is currently located at Dick Smith Hyundai in Greenville, South Carolina, where the dealership diagnosed the failure and recommended a full engine long block replacement. ### **2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk?** The engine failure occurred **suddenly and without warning**, causing the vehicle to lose power while operating. The loss of engine function created the risk of: * sudden deceleration in traffic, * inability to accelerate or maneuver, * potential rear-end collision, * complete engine stall in unsafe conditions. The vehicle had **no oil warning light** prior to the failure, meaning I had no indication that the engine was at risk until the failure occurred. ### **3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center?** Yes. The engine failure was confirmed by: • **Schwab’s Automotive** in Fayetteville, NC – determined the engine suffered catastrophic internal damage and was not repairable. • **Dick Smith Hyundai** dealership – confirmed **high oil consumption and CVVT damage**, and recommended a full **engine long block replacement** (estimate: $8,160.60). The problem has been fully verified by both an independent mechanic and an authorized Hyundai dealership. ## **4.Yes.The vehicle was formally inspected by Hyundai Motor America through the dealership’s diagnostic report. The vehicle started to stall/drive in limp mode. I took it to the Hyundai dealership, and they quoted me $5000 for repairs. The repair recommendations were as followed: ensure connecting rod bearings are within spec, recommending performing timing job w/replacement of intake camshaft, e-cvvt motor/gear, e-cvvt cover, and other components necessary for repairs. This engine burns/consumes oil and the engine code that shows up in P00100. All of this after I paid it off. Not within warranty anymore either. $22,000 down the drain it seems... called hyundai customer service to see if there was anything that could be done but they said there is nothing they can do and I have to fix it even though it is a manufacturing issue.

Was going down the highway at 65 when my vehicle completely lost the accelerating component. Almost got rear ended so I pulled off. Then made it to work when it happened again. The engine light came on and gave 2 codes. Finally got it towed to the dealership where they have decided it’s either a new timing chain or new engine due to mechanical loss. They discovered there was no oil in the car and they have also found metal shavings in my oil. Now they are telling me I need a whole new engine. I only have 124000 miles on this car. The car was driving perfectly fine the day before and had just been to the dealer and looked over 1,500 miles before and I was told everything was perfect working condition. I am out $4000 on a car I bought a year and a half ago in October 2023.Was told my warranty only lasted a year.

While driving on rural side road, two lanes, my check engine light (yellow, steady) came on. I pulled into a safe spot and did a quick survey, checked the owner manual, but could not identify any problem, and continued on my way. The check engine light was still on. About 15 minutes later the car would not accelerate past 25 mph (limp mode?). I was on a two-lane mountain road, speed limit 45 (but most cars were faster), visibility limited by terrain, trees, etc. Again, there was little traffic around me and I found a safe place to pull over. in neutral the engine revved normally. I turned the ignition off, checked oil level, (normal), turned the engine back on and started driving to find a safe place to pull over and summon help, but the car drove normally. I drove directly to my repair shop and had the codes pulled, (0436, 0021) which indicate a problem with timing. When a qualified tech examined it he recommended taking to the dealer. Unwilling to drive in traffic, I had it towed to the dealership. Their inspection revealed damage to CVVT components and the timing chain, and recommend an (expensive) engine rebuild.

Oil compsumption noted and leakage noted by mechanic. Informed me could cause a fire in engine compartment. Unsafe to drive. I rented a car. . Engine burning oil, high oil consumption, oil leak. Reported to Hyundai. Took vehicle to Kerry Hyundai, Alexandria, Ky. Was informed that Hyundai won’t take care of it. Filed a complaint. Mediation through The Better Business Burrau. Claim was denied. I was not driving the car for a couple weeks. I am guardian of 2 school age children transporting to and from school and activities and was concerned for our safety. Took vehicle to Superior Hyundai, Cincinnati, Ohio for an oil change and reported an oil leak. Was informed there was no oil leak. Had oil changes at Valvoline, Newport,Ky, No report of oil leak. Walmart, Ft Wright ,Ky pointed out leak from oil pan. Replaced oil pan. Check engine light came on. Took vehicle to Konen’s Pittstop , Bellevue, Ky who repaired oil leak. Continued oil check for consumption. Again check engine light illumination. Recently Replaced spark plugs & wires, catalytic converter. Engine running rough. Valves going bad. If car stalls on highway an accident could occur. Hyundai has a recall in the same year and make but not for those manufactured in the state of Alabama. The dealership inspection was about a year ago at Kerry Hyundai, Alexandria, Ky. They only recommended oil changes. I cannot afford the additional engine repairs. Hyundai has prior knowledge of the engine defect and refuses a recall thereby endangering peoples lives.

On November 28, 2025 at approximately 2:20am, I was involved in a multi-car pile up crash on Interstate 85 south near Durham NC. At least 5 vehicles were involved and significantly damaged. At least two drivers were taken by ambulance to local hospitals. Fortunately I was not one of them. I was driving in the left lane of the 2 lane southbound interstate. It happened right in front of me and I had no chance of completely avoiding it so I veered to my left onto the shoulder to attempt to avoid a direct hit on the large Nissan SUV that was now straddling both lanes. I hit the front of the Nissan and the guardrail almost simultaneously at somewhere around 50 to 60mph which caused considerable damage to the front right quadrant and the entire drivers side of my vehicle, but my airbags never deployed and I sustained moderate to significant injury to my arms, shoulders, chest and neck, most likely due to how I was gripping the steering wheel in anticipation of the impact and from the seat belt. I did not require medical treatment at the scene but have since received treatment at home. I believe the airbags should have deployed given my speed at impact and where my vehicle came in contact with both the Nissan SUV as well as the guardrail. I believe this was a clear failure of the airbag system in my vehicle, which has since been deemed to be totaled by my insurance company.

We consistently had issues with losing power on turns. My wife questioned Hyundai many times. They took it for a test drive and said they could not duplicate the issue and that they did not receive any complaints from anyone. We believed them until I saw many complaints on various websites including this site. Then the major issue occurred. I was merging onto an interstate making a big right hand loop and while I was in the middle of the right turn loop, the car lost power and then it did not come back. I had multiple cars behind me and many on the highway with nowhere to pull over. Top speed was 45 mph. It turned out to be a blown Turbo. The car is under warranty. That was in July of 2021. It is now December 2021 and I still do not have my car with no idea of when it will be fixed. After telling us they would have the part in August (which didn't happen) then September (which didn't happen) then November (which again did not happen) they said they didn't even show a ship order any longer for the part. We were told to call customer affairs. I called them on 11/22 and again on 12/8 - still no one is calling back. I'm stuck driving a small car while I'm paying for an SUV that no one will give any feedback. There were many cars at the dealer lot which appeared to be the same issue - same model. This has to qualify for the lemon law. The loss of power suddenly is extremely dangerous so if you have one, be careful.

My engine failed with regular oil changes at less than 120k miles with NO warning. It was 9 at night and it completely shut down on the highway. The hazards, brake lights, etc were not operable! I was almost hit by traffic three times due to not being able to turn on hazards and brake lights not working. I could not even place the car in neutral. Thankfully, the local police department was finally able to assist me but it was a frightening experience and Hyundai is doing absolutely nothing about it.

I was driving on the highway, and suddenly oil and battery light came on and engine stopped and I had to pull over. The only warning was the check engine light came on when I started it 10 minutes before the engine died.
Nov 19, 2023
The engine seized without warning or notice. No warning lamps came on to indicate anything wrong with the oil pressure, engine, or anything else. I received notices for low gas from time to time, but never anything concerning the engine. I heard engine noises the day before the engine seized. The next day it failed. The car was inspected by the dealership and Hyundai to determine whether the cost would be covered by them and this is what was reported to me in the cost for repair: “Engine Rebuild/Replace: 3.3L LONG BLOCK, GASKETS, AND FLUIDS This is the entire process needed to either rebuild or replace the vehicle's engine. This is a process needed when the vehicle's engine is in need of serious repair.” I was denied coverage because my VIN number was not on the recall list for 2017 Hyundais. I believe it was recall 168. When I looked into it, I read exactly what happened to mine. My safety was a concern because the engine stopped while I was driving and I had to coast into a safe area without causing an accident. I was told by the dealership that this was a common problem for 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe’s but the recall is not for all of the Hyundais this problem has happened to. I was told by a former employee of Take5 that Hyundais burn oil quicker than most cars. I can’t confirm that the issue was from a lack of oil, but from what I’ve read, that could be the main issue. I believe a warning on the quickness of oil consumption should be put out as well as an improved warning system/sensors for this make and model.

This will be my second report to the NHTSA. I was originally told my car needed a new engine, but then it was confirmed that was not the issue since the car started and drove just fine, the recall for the ABS mod was brought up to two different Hyundai dealerships and their corporate office, I requested if it could not be fixed to buy back my car. It was denied. My car then caught fire while driving, resulting in my husband almost dying on the highway. Fire shot from the bottom of the car up into engulfed flames within seconds…and then blew. Determined it was an electrical engine fire. All could have been avoided if Hyundai had just listened to my concerns and checked my ABS. However due their refusal to do so, and refusal to inspect my engine for the recall, my family, kids included were put at risk. It seems to be happening all over the world with these cars and NOTHING is being done.

While just entering the freeway my hood flew open at approximately 65-70 mph, hit and broke the windshield, causing me to run off the road. The vehicle exhibited no prior indications that the hood could fly up. The vehicle was taken to a Hyundai dealership and we were told that we needed to contact Hyundai Customer Care that the dealership could not do anything until a Claims Manger contacted them. Upon contacting Customer Care a claim number was assigned and the Hyundai claims manger eventually called saying that this defect is not covered under the recall 163 (TSB# 17-01-050 for Secondary Latch Cable) because the manufacture date is 7/30/2016 and the recall dates are 7/12/2012 through 6/27/2016. This is only 33 days after the recall period ended and sounds like the Hyundai factory had an escape of a bad vehicle. I took pictures of the secondary latch cable, it shows corrosion, and uploaded to the Hyundai website at the advice of the Customer Care Representative. After a lengthy period time the Hyundai Clams Manager reported, on a recorded line as he stressed, that his management did not see this as a warranty or goodwill repair and suggested that I make an insurance claim for the repair and for a rental car. My wife, mother in law and children were not physically injured but emotionally rattled. We've had no choice but to drive the vehicle, with the hood secured alternate DIY means, as we awaited disposition by Hyundai. We now have no choice but to arrange both repair and loaner vehicle by ourselves. Again, the vehicle manufacture and recall date range are only 33 days apart - this smells of an escape from the Hyundai manufacturing plant. Also, isn't the purpose of the secondary latch to prevent the hood from flying up if the primary latch fails or is partially / false latched? Please contact me if you need any additional information i.e. Claim number, Claims Manager name, etc.

In June 2024, my vehicle suddenly lost power while I was driving on the freeway, almost causing a serious accident. I managed to restart the car after being stuck on the shoulder of the freeway for several minutes. The same issue occurred the following day, prompting me to have the vehicle towed to the dealership. Hyundai Motor was contacted since the vehicle is still under warranty. The dealership informed me they would conduct an oil consumption test three times to diagnose the issue. However, they also stated that for the test to be successful, I needed to replace unrelated parts, including the brakes and transmission oil, among other items. Reluctantly, I agreed and spent $1,800 on these replacements. After completing the first oil consumption test, I returned for the second test. However, the dealership informed me that no further tests were necessary and returned the car to me without addressing the underlying issue. I emailed the case manager assigned by Hyundai to report this, but I never received a response. A few months later, the car failed to start. I contacted Hyundai again, and they dispatched a tow truck. The tow truck driver managed to start the car. A few days later, the issue recurred, and the roadside assistance tow driver suggested it might be the battery. Out of frustration, I paid $300 to replace the battery. Despite this, the car continued to make unusual noises at startup, a problem I had repeatedly mentioned to the dealership and in my communications with Hyundai. The situation reached a critical point today when my wife was driving the vehicle on the freeway with our five children inside. While traveling at 60 miles per hour, the car suddenly lost power again, putting their lives in danger. This is the third time this hazardous issue has occurred, and I fear for the safety of my family.

I bought this vehicle back in 2022 hearing how great Hyundai is wanting to make a long time purchase with a for my family. I’ve had different models vehicles but I wanted something reliable. Now hearing this is possibly a fire hazard I need all this taking care of immediately . I am dependent on my car to get to work, for food, and I take my kids to school an to practice and just everyday life. I will take my vehicle to the dealership immediately to attempt to get this taking care of this week an hopes this company can make it right. Thanks for your time

Car has repeatedly lost power or hesitated when making turns. Now it lost power and decelerated over 10 mph abruptly while driving on I-65. After deceleration the car would not accelerate to in a normal fashion. Took minutes to get up to speed. Upon a test drive at the dealership, Terry Lee Hyundai, I was told nothing was wrong with the car. I refused to believe that after my highway driving incident and made them test it again. It produced a dTC code of P0088. After having my car for four days they tried to return it to me again saying nothing was wrong with it. I was dumbfounded. How can I have a drastic highway incident and DTC codes emailed to me via bluelink and nothing be wrong. I feel this car is unsafe for highway driving. May cause a wreck due to the losing power while turning issue and now this highway driving issue. The car drove normal under 60 mph. The turning issue happens when the car makes quick 90 degree turns. Also the engine was replaced due to electrical interference issues at 96000 miles. Car has always had loss of power issues followed by the lack of the ability to accelerate properly. Please help!!!!

My engine had been using oil at a very fast rate and I was just told that hyundai consume a lot of oil. I have had this car since 77k miles and have issues ever since I bought it. At first I had issues with it not accelerating on the interstate and then it would randomly stop while I was driving, almost like a car hiccup. I took it to the dealership, and other car shops and no one found anything wrong. Finally two weeks ago, I was on I85 and my car was driving really roughly and idling roughly as well. No lights came on until it started to decelerate on the interstate to 30 miles an hour and I had to pull off to the side of the road. Then a bunch of different lights came on and I turned it off and it wouldn't turn back on. I had it towed to the dealership, and they stated I had a bad engine, and Hyundai may replace it but it will take the shop 4-6 months to even take the engine apart to see whats happening. I'm out of a car for at least 4 months probably more, and there is nothing I can do. The mechanic is thinking there is an issue with the bearing.

2017 Hyundai Santa Fe. While driving, the vehicle stopped accelerating. The vehicle operated appropriately until half way through the drive. At stops, it would take several seconds (30ish) for the car to go about 20 mph (rough estimate). The car would not go above 50mph, and this took a few minutes to reach with the gas pedal all the way down. I parked the car and had it towed. After approximately a month at the dealership, the dealership text that there was a hole in the valve cover and that the engine would also need to be replaced. They did not say what was wrong with the engine and later stated, also via text, that to do a diagnostic it would be $350. I purchased the car used with approximately 45000 miles 10 months prior. At the time of the incident, there were 62000 miles on the vehicle. They stated that it would not be covered under warranty because I was not the original owner. I purchased the extended warranty at the time of purchase. They then filed a claim with that policy and we are awaiting an inspector to look at the vehicle. There were no warning lights prior to the issue. My family, husband and 3 children were in the car and it was dangerous because we were on a busy road and the car would not go to the speed of traffic. We are awaiting an inspector to look at the vehicle. The vehicle is currently still at the dealership. If requested, I am willing to have the car inspected. The incident occurred 5/12/2022.

I WAS DRIVING FROM KELLOGG, MN TO WINONA, MN AND I STOPPED AT LARK TOYS. WHILE JOINING MN HIGHWAY 61, TURNING RIGHT I HAD TO ACCELERATE. I WAS IN SPORT MODE AND VEHICLE ACCELERATED AND ALMOST STOPPED. LUCKILY NO ACCIDENT OCCURRED, I HAD MY 17 MONTH KID AND MY WIFE IN THE CAR. CAR AFTER THAT GAVE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WARNING AND IT WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. I CHANGED TO ECO MODE AND THEN IT SLOWLY STARTED TO ACCELERATE, BUT AT ABOUT 20 MILES AN HOUR IT JERKED AGAIN, BUT I PRESSED ACCELERATE HARD AND IT SUSTAINED SPEED. BUT IT WONT GO OVER 65 MILES AN HOUR. I SLOWLY MADE IT HOME. BUT I TRIED TO DRIVE AGAIN AND SAME ISSUE. CALLED HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SUPPORT AND THEY REFUSED TO ROCHESTER AS IT IS 46 MILES AND THEY ONLY SUPPORT 20 MILES OR LESS TOW. MY CAR IS STILL UNDER MANUFACTURE WARRANTY AND YET WORST SERVICE. I ALMOST GOT KILLED TODAY WITH MY 17 MONTH TODDLER

FAILURE TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOP POSITION. PULLED OFF THE HIGHWAY ONTO THE OFF RAMP. CAME TO A STOP THEN TRIED TO TURN LEFT. VEHICLE BARELY MOVED AND HAD TO ACCELERATE TO OVER 2500 RPM AND SEVERAL SECONDS LATER TO GET THE VEHICLE BARELY MOVING. PULLED OFF THE ROAD, PUT THE VEHICLE INTO MANUAL SHIFT MODE TO FIND THE TRANSMISSION IS LOCKED INTO 4TH GEAR AND CANNOT BE DOWNSHIFTED TO 1ST. VEHICLE CONTINUED TO BE LOCKED INTO 4TH GEAR AFTER EACH STOP. TURNING OFF THE VEHICLE AND RESTARTING TEMPORARILY CORRECTS THE PROBLEM. POTENTIAL MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. VEHICLE NOW WITH DEALER TO RESOLVE

2017 HYUNDAI SANTE FE SPORT AWD - PURCHASED IN OCT 2017. CURRENTLY HAVE 7525 MILES ON VEHICLE. I NOTICED ACCELERATION HESITATION IMMEDIATELY AFTER MAKING IN CITY TURNS (FROM BOTH STATIONARY AND IN MOTION TURNS) AS WELL AS WHEN GETTING ON HIGHWAY (IN MOTION). I AM RETIRED AND DO NOT DRIVE SANTE FE VERY OFTEN. THE PROBLEMS WITH ACCELERATION AFTER MAKING STATIONARY AND IN MOTION TURNS AND GETTING ON HIGHWAY HAS ALWAYS BEEN PRESENT SINCE DAY OF PURCHASE. I HAVE NOTICED THE PROBLEM HAS BECOME MORE PREVALENT AFTER TAKING A 1000 MILE ROAD TRIP THIS PAST AUGUST. THE ACCELERATION/ HESITATION AFTER TURNING IS MORE NOTICEABLE AND IS BECOMING CONCERNING BECAUSE I HAVE TO PRESS PETAL TO FLOOR TO GET THE SANTE FE TO ACCELERATE PROPERLY TO GET OUT OF WAY OF ON COMING TRAFFIC. HESITATIONS/ACCELERATION PROBLEMS OCCURS AFTER TURNING AND WHEN ENTERING A FREEWAY. VERY POOR ENGINE PERFORMANCE GIVEN THE VEHICLE COST OF $35,000. I OWNED A 2011 HYUNDAI SONTA FOR 6 YEARS AND HAD THE SAME 2.4L ENGINE AND I NEVER EXPERIENCED ANY ENGINE HESITATION LIKE I AM NOW WITH THE 2017 HYUNDAI SANTE FE SPORT AWD.

HAVE OWNED VEHICLE SINCE 12/16. APPROX 6 TIMES THERE HAS BEEN AN ACCELERATION PROBLEM WHEN CHANGING LANES OR TURNING. HAVE PUSHED THE GAS AND NOTHING HAPPENED - ENGINE DOES NOT REV OR RESPOND IN ANY WAY TO THE PRESSING OF THE GAS PEDAL. ITS LIKE THE CAR IS IN NEUTRAL AND THEN IT WILL JUST ALL OF A SUDDEN RE-ENGAGE. NO WARNING LIGHTS; NO INDICATION WHEN IT WILL HAPPEN. FILED COMPLAINT WITH HYUNDAI BUT THEY ARE UNABLE TO RECREATE THE PROBLEM AND/OR WILL NOT ASSIST UNTIL THEY CAN. DEALER HAD CAR FOR TWO WEEKS AND COULD NOT RECREATE SO HYUNDAI CLOSED OUR COMPLAINT. THE DATE ENTERED BELOW IS THE LAST TIME IT HAPPENED.

BRAND NEW VEHICLE (1600 MILES) HESITATES WHEN I GO FROM A COMPLETE STOP AND START TO ACCELERATE AT LOW SPEEDS. MAINLY NOTICE IT WHEN TAKING A CORNER. IT SEEMS AS IF IT HAS TROUBLE SELECTING THE GEAR AND ONCE IT DOES, IT LURCHES FORWARD. DANGEROUS WHEN PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC AS THE HESITATION PUTS YOU IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD JUST A LITTLE TOO LONG FOR COMFORT. ALSO, MY TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT WILL COME ON AROUND CERTAIN CORNERS AND LEAVES ME WITHOUT CONTROL OF THE CAR. ALSO ANOTHER SAFETY ISSUE AS AGAIN THE CAR HESITATES OR LOCKS UP BECAUSE OF THIS FEATURE AND DOESN'T ALLOW ME TO DRIVE FORWARD AS I WISH. IT'S THE MIDDLE OF THE SUMMER WITHOUT ANY RAIN AND DEFINITELY NO SNOW ON THE GROUND (I'D SAY PERFECT ROAD CONDITIONS) SO NO REAL REASON WHY MY TRACTION CONTROL SHOULD BE TURNING ON AROUND CORNERS. VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS ISSUE! ALSO, I SHOULD NOTE THAT THESE ISSUES HAVE BEEN HAPPENING LONG BEFORE 1600 MILES. I NOTICED THEM THE FIRST WEEK OR SO THAT I TOOK THE VEHICLE HOME SO DEFINITELY LESS THAN 500 MILES AS I BOUGHT IT NEW. FOR A BRAND NEW, FAIRLY EXPENSIVE VEHICLE I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO FEEL LIKE MY CONFIDENCE IN IT'S BASIC PERFORMANCE IS COMPROMISED.

I WAS MAKING A LEFT TURN ON TO A STREET GOING UPHILL AND MY 2017 HYUNDAI SANTE FE SPORT AWD ULTIMATE HESITATED FOR APPROXIMATELY 10 SECONDS. WHEN I PRESSED THE GAS I COULD NOT GET SPEED. I HAD MY CAR FOR 12 MONTHS I BOUGHT BRAN NEW. IT HAS STALED AND TURN OFF ON ME AT LEAST 5 TIMES. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE ESPECIALLY ON THE FREEWAY THE CAR LOSES POWER AND STOPS.THAN BEFORE IT STOPS MAKES A KNOCKING NOISE.

THE VEHICLE FAILS TO ACCELERATE PAST THE INITIAL PRESS OF THE ACCELERATOR FROM A STOP LEAVING YOU COMMITTED IN TRAFFIC WITHOUT POWER FOR AROUND 2 SECONDS. STEPPING ON THE ACCELERATOR FAILS TO PRODUCE ANY POWER. JUST HAD THE VEHICLE LOOKED AT BY HYUNDAI WHO SAID THEY CAN FIND NOTHING WRONG. HYUNDAI ALSO SAID THERE ARE NO BULLETINS OR RECALLS. A SEARCH ON THE INTERNET SHOWS AN ALARMING AMOUNT OF CHATTER FROM OTHER OWNERS WITH THE SAME ISSUE. THERE IS UNDER 6000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE AND THIS HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES, INTERMITTENTLY.

2017 SANTA FE ULTIMATE 2.0T. CAR DOES NOT ACCELERATE AND LAGS. HAPPENS AT A LOWER SPEED AND FROM A STOP. VERY SCARY WHEN MAKING A LEFT TURN AND ENTERING FREEWAY.DEPRESSING ACCELERATOR AND NOTHING HAPPENS FOR A SECOND OR MORE, THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN IT TAKES OFF. AT LOW SPEED IN PARKING LOT DEPRESS ACCELERATOR LIGHTLY AND CAR TAKES OFF. WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP CAR WILL ACCELERATE QUICKLY WHILE DEPRESSING PEDAL GENTLY. DOES NOT HAPPEN EVERY TIME BUT IS FREQUENT ENOUGH TO BE CONCERNED. HAS HAPPENED SINCE NEW.

SOMETIMES, WHEN I PRESS THE GAS TO ACCELERATE, MY CAR DOES NOT GO. IT WILL MOVE FORWARD AT A SLOW PACE BUT THEN DOESN'T GO AS FAST AS I'M PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL, EVEN THOUGH MY RPMS ARE INCREASING. THIS HAS ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE THE CAR DOES NOT PERFORM AS IT SHOULD. HAPPENED TODAY FOR PROBABLY THE 10TH TIME SINCE I'VE HAD THE CAR, LESS THAN A MONTH. PULLING OUT OF A PARKING LOT ONTO THE STREET, MY CAR MOVE'S FORWARD VERY SLOWLY THEN WHEN I GO TO INCREASE MY SPEED THE CAR DOESN'T GO FASTER.

While driving- in total movement- the car completely shut off. Without any prior warning or indication. Immediately after, the car restarted, drove a couple blocks over, continuing to shut off while driving. It was then towed. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The warning lights did not appear until AFTER the car quit. They all came on & flashed & quickly went back out. Uncertain which component misfired or is affected- possibly related to an engine or fuel/ cylinder failure. Car is at mechanic for inspection. Our safety & lives were in critical jeopardy as the vehicle stopped without warning while driving in traffic congested area. It is unknown if this is a known issue or if this situation has been replicated however the current mechanic facility has experienced the same issue with this vehicle. Also strong odor of gas was experienced during shutoff.

On May 2023, while my husband was taking my daughter to go to school with 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe, he noticed engine knocking noises emanating from the engine compartment. Shortly after, the vehicle's performance significantly deteriorated, and the check engine light illuminated on the dashboard, and the engine shut down. Get the car towed to the nearest auto service, the mechanic told me that there’s an engine failure as result of abnormal oil consumption causing internal damage and need to be fixed by Hyundai. I called Hyundai USA, and was told that in order to have it covered under the warranty, it needed to be repaired by an authorized dealer. However, no authorized dealer had an available appointment for at least 2 months. Finally after 2 months, I had the car towed to the authorized Hyundai service center for diagnosis and repairs. Upon examination by the certified technicians at the Hyundai service center, I was informed that it needs and engine replacement that will cost around $20,000. I called Hyundai Corporation and had escalated my case to the case manager, but the manager never called back to give me an update. Their customer service department is also frustrating to deal with. They just sort of repeat the same phrases over and over again rather than having any sort of actual conversation with you. It's been more than 2 months after the incident and they finally they can’t do anything about it because it’s outside of warranty. It’s very frustrating

I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE ON 5/7/16. ON 6/2/16 I WAS DRIVING ON HIGHWAY 395 WHEN I NOTICED SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE CAR STARTED LOSING POWER AND EVENTUALLY DIED. WHEN I GOT IT PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD I NOTICED FLAMES COMING OUT FROM THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE. I GRABBED WHAT I COULD AND GOT OUT OF THE CAR. WITHIN 5 MIN THE FRONT OF THE CAR WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. I HAD APPROXIMATELY 675 MILES ON IT. I HAVE CONTACTED HYUNDAI BUT THEY HAVE NOT RESPONDED TO ME. I ORDERED A COPY OF THE POLICE REPORT BUT HAVE NOT RECEIVED IT YET. I HAVE PICTURES THAT I HAVE ATTACHED. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THIS HAPPENING TO OTHER PEOPLE. THANKFULLY I DIDN'T HAVE GRANDKIDS IN THE CAR, I'M NOT SURE I WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET THEM OUT.

My daughter immediately grabbed her dog and exited from the vehicle to a safe spot away from the car. Within 10 seconds the vehicle exploded and erupted into a 20 ft fireball. If my daughter would have hesitated she could have been killed. Hyundai inspected the vehicle and found nothing conclusive except that this problem has been documented in other Incidents. I bought this vehicle and there was a complete break down malfunction due to the ABS module system! This lack of due diligence caused both myself and my 7 year old to unwillingly enter a vehicle that put our lives at risk and a near death experience that still traumatizes my daughter until this day who refuses to enter any vehicle! This is an unfortunate mistake on your end and there is no where near enough compensation that will ever withdraw the fear from my innocent child’s eyes anytime I need to drive her to school, or basketball practice, or anywhere to run our daily errands and live a normal life! I have nothing else to add except I expect compensation for a safe vehicle and compensation necessary to help my child, my innocent child to get through this fear!

Icalled my dealer where I purchase my Hyundai & I called Hyundai customer care as well. Both p;laces told me since they do not have a remedy to cure this default there is nothing they can do. They both advised me to park my car away from other vehicles & structures as a fire could be triggered in the engine that could damage the surrounding area. This is preposterous that they recommended me to continue to drive the car but not keep it next to anything. I am a young mother with an 8 month old baby & I am petrified to drive the car & they will not provide me with a substitute car or rental car until they can fix the issue, which they have no timeframe to complete. The recall number for Hyundai is 22V056. Hyundai has it as 218. Please let me know what I can do to expedite this issue & feel safe. Thanks.

Purchased Vehicle 6/2022 has had an electrical problem since day one randomly does not start and must be jumped. I have taken in 2 times only to be told there is nothing wrong. I called Hyundai Corporate to see what steps I should take to resolve issues was told to take car in a third time and again told nothing wrong. A new battery was placed two months after my purchase date. And again this past February and issues still exist. Was given two option should problem not be resolved 1) Buy back vehicle 2) replace with different vehicle. Both options have been withdrawn. Explanation car has been on the road to long. I put $13500 down and have made payments for 2 years. There is still $12000 on the loan. Is there anything I can do to recoup at least my down-payment. I am a senior on social security and a part time job in which i am a caregiver and do not feel safe driving this vehicle. I and do not have a down payment to trade the car in. I do not want the vehicle there are other issues starting and with a parasitic draw there are bound to be additional issues down the road. Can you help please. Expected ResolutionHyundai take car back and return my down payment so I can purchase a reliable vehicle o Additionally just recently discovered vehicle was in 2 accidents which this information was never disclosed. I would not have purchased had I known.

At this time Hyundai has not taken responsibility.

The panoramic sunroof spontaneously shattered while driving under normal conditions. It sounded like a loud gunshot and then shards of the glass fell into the car - luckily the liner caught the majority of the shattered glass. The vehicle is currently at a dealership to fix the damage. I am fortunate that no other cars were around me when the spontaneous shattering happened. The loud noise caused me to slow down considerably, and some glass shards fell backward. If the glass shards had fallen into the vehicle it could have cut me. The dealership has no idea why my sunroof spontaneously combusted, but after doing some research, I saw that Hyundai has had this happen to many other of their vehicles with panoramic sunroofs, and they have gone through a handful of class action lawsuits over the damage. As it is the holidays, I have yet to hear back from my insurance company, but I have started the process of filing a claim online - however, the online form said I would need to call since the damage is on the sunroof which fell under a specialty circumstance. There were no warnings, messages, or other symptoms before the failure. The shattered glass came out of nowhere and without warning.

We were driving on a highway at normal highway speeds around 10:15pm. There was some light rain and some lightning in the area. Out of nowhere our panoramic sunroof on our 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe just exploded. There were no cars/trucks in front of us that kicked up any debris that could have caused this. It just shattered and the sound was deafening, it sounded like an explosion and for a quick second I thought we were getting shot at until I observed that no other glass in the car was broken so at that point I knew it was the panoramic sunroof.

The panoramic sunroof on our 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe unexpectedly and without warning, exploded during a leisurely drive through our town this morning. At a speed not exceeding 40 mph, we were suddenly met with a loud, gunshot like sound that instantly frightened us. We immediately put our hazards on and pulled off to the side of the road to find that the sunroof had completely shattered. Thank goodness we had just closed the sun shade or else our three year old and family pet would have been covered in glass shards, shards that would have most definitely caused serious injuries had that sun shade not been closed. We were on a paved road where no other vehicles were present, leaving no chance for a rock or any sort of debris to have impacted the vehicle. There has been no prior glass work done on the sunroof and we have not experienced any sort of major temperature differential in our area recently. There were no chips or hairline cracks present prior to this incident. We have contacted our insurance company but are waiting to file a claim until we reach out to the dealership (it is currently a Sunday and all dealerships are closed here). Had we been on a major highway or road, this could have most definitely caused an accident as the noise was incredibly loud and shocking. Again, what is most concerning is the fact that had we not just closed the sun shade, our toddler could have been seriously injured by the glass shards.

ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)

I FILED THIS REPORT ON 2/21/17 AND AFTER A FEW WEEKS IT DISAPPEARED (COMPLAINT # 10956079). THIS IS AN UPDATED VERSION OF THAT COMPLAINT. WHEN MAKING A RIGHT OR LEFT TURN FROM A STOP INTO TRAFFIC AND THE SUV HITS A SMALL PATCH OF SNOW, POTHOLE OR BUMP IN THE STREET, THE STABILITY/ TRACTION CONTROL WILL CURTAIL THE VEHICLE ACCELERATION FOR A FEW SECONDS. THIS HAS CAUSED A NEAR MISS REAREND COLLISION INTO MY VEHICLE ON THREE OCCASIONS. THERE IS A BUTTON TO SHUT THE TRACTION (ACCELERATION) CONTROL FEATURE OFF BUT IT MUST BE PUSHED EACH TIME YOU START THE VEHICLE. MY OPINION IS THAT THE STABILITY/TRACTION CONTROL SENSOR IS FAR TOO SENSITIVE AND / OR THE COMPUTER SOFTWARE NEEDS TO BE REVISED. HYUNDAI MOTOR USA AND MY LOCAL DEALER HAVE STATED THAT THE STABILITY/TRACTION CONTROL IS OPERATING AS DESIGNED.

DURING NORMAL LEFT HAND AND RIGHT HAND TURNS AND U-TURNS, THE TC/ESC CAN ACTIVATE AND CAUSE THE ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM TO SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE ENGINE POWER. THIS HAPPENS ON DRY PAVEMENT, UNDER NORMAL ACCELERATION. IT WILL ALSO HAPPEN MORE FREQUENTLY DURING TURNS IF THERE IS A BUMP/POTHOLE/ROAD IMPERFECTION THAT JARS THE SUSPENSION. THIS ISSUE IS DANGEROUS AND HAS NEARLY CAUSED ACCIDENTS. I HAVE HAD TO PULL OFF THE ROAD TO AVOID A COLLISION FROM THE REAR BECAUSE THE ENGINE HAD NO POWER, THE TC/ESC LIGHT WAS FLASHING ON THE DASH. SO FAR MY ATTEMPTS AT THE DEALER TO HAVE THIS FIXED HAVE BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL. I AM WORKING WITH HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS TO DETERMINE A SOLUTION.

PURCHASED A HYUNDAI SANTA FE AWD TURBO IN MAY 2016, WITHIN THE FIRST 3 MONTHS THE TRACTION ASSIST HAS TRIGGERED CAUSING THE POWER TRAIN TO LOOS POWER FOR 10-15 SECONDS A TOTAL OF 5 TIMES. EACH TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED IT HAS BEEN FROM A STOP AND TURNING ONTO ANOTHER STREET AND OR U TURN ALL UNDER 30MPH, HAVE HAD IT TO THE DEALER 3 TIMES AND HAVE CONTACTED HYUNDAI DIRECTLY AND THEY CAN NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I CAN REPRODUCE THE ISSUE IF I RUN OVER PART OF THE CURB OR A HARD BUMP. I FEEL THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE IF THE SUV LOOSES POWER FOR 10-15 SECONDS WHEN PULLING OUT.

While driving on the highway at normal speed, the vehicle suddenly lost power with no prior warning lamps or messages, placing me and other road users at immediate risk. The engine rapidly began knocking, lost acceleration, then stalled completely. I had to coast to the shoulder, which was extremely dangerous in high-speed traffic. The failure appears consistent with bearing wear and debris circulation described in Hyundai Recall 168 and TSB 17-01-071, which warn that certain Hyundai 3.3L engines can suffer internal metallic debris contamination during manufacturing. This can restrict oil flow, damage the bearings, and lead to sudden engine seizure without warning — exactly what happened in this incident. After the failure, the engine was inspected by a Hyundai dealership, but no oil sample, no debris test, and no photo documentation were provided, even though the recall procedure requires these steps when symptoms match knock/no-start failure patterns. The cause was not reproduced or confirmed by any independent mechanical test; the vehicle simply failed suddenly and has remained inoperable since. The incident created a major safety risk because the sudden loss of power happened at highway speed with no safe way to maintain vehicle control or speed. Based on known recall documentation, the symptoms match the described safety-related engine defect. The vehicle remains available for inspection. There were no injuries or police reports, but the situation definitely could have resulted in a crash. In my assessment, this is a critical safety defect related to internal engine debris and bearing failure, consistent with the known Hyundai recall pattern for this engine family

I bought this vehicle at Enterprise car sales back in [XXX] and it's been having issues for a while now recall after recall I bought this vehicle at 7745 Indiana avenue Riverside California 92504 I actually bought this vehicle without realizing that this car had a recall prior to buying it off the lot therefore in California law this company should have not sold the vehicle with a recall as Hyundai has warned me about this as he advised they cannot sell a vehicle with a recall on it. When I had to Google search my recall as I have not received a letter Enterprise car sales gained the letter for the recall prior to my buy and did not mention anything as this recall was sent out on the letter way prior to buying ever since buying this vehicle I have had numerous recalls as to now there is a GDI issue with the engines as I have made many complaints through the financing company Santander consumer USA, Hyundai, Enterprise car sales, and it seems like no one has listened to me on the lemon I have gained as I'm sure it sounds just like a complaining customer. I pay a very high interest rate and very high monthly payments 523 a month is expensive let alone expensive to pay for a vehicle that I constantly have to put in maintenance and now my engine is gone my VIN number somehow is not on regards to the recall but yet my VIN number has been on every recall Hyundai has ever given out when it comes to my vehicle as the GDI 3.3 l should be really considered on regards to a recall as well as the 2.4. I'm not very happy as I would like to have a voice on to what is fair I am sick of this vehicle having issues after issues as I do take care of my vehicles with good maintenance routine all I can ask for is to have someone here my voice and to take action either from Enterprise car sales to Hyundai which I believe Enterprise car sales is more reliable at this point than Hyundai since Hyundai let me be aware of the California law they cannot sell a vehicle with recall. I WAS DRIVING ON THE EXPRESSWAY AND MY OIL LIGHT INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON IN THE CAR AND WENT OFF AFTER I GOT OFF THE EXPRESSWAY PULLED OVER AT A GAS STATION. SO I STARTED DRIVING AGAIN AND AGAIN THE OIL LIGHT COMES ON SO I RECORDED IT ON MY CELL PHONE.I JUST HAD MY OIL CHANGED A WEEK PRIOR TO THIS. TOOK MY VEHICLE BACK TO THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP IN MATTESON ILLINOIS WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM. AND GET ALL MY OIL CHANGES DONE ON THE VEHICLE. THEY CHECKED OUT MY VEHICLE AND SAID THAT THEY DIDN'T GET THE COMING ON WHEN THEY TOOK MY CAR ON A TEST DRIVE. SO I SHOW THE MECHANIC THE VIDEO I RECORDED ON MY PHONE. HE LOOKS AT THE VIDEO AND SAYS TO ME WELL IF THE OIL LIGHT COMES BACK ON BRING THE VEHICLE BACK. AND TELLS ME THE VEHICLE IS OK TO DRIVE AS IT IS. TWO DAYS LATER I'M RUNNING AN ARRON IN TRAFFIC ON A BUSY CITY STREET AND AS I'M DRIVING MY CAR STARTS JERKING AND STALLING AND A FLASHING ENGINE LIGHT ON THE DASH BOARD I PUT MY HAZARD LIGHTS ON AND PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. CALLED HYUNDAI SERVICE DEPARTMENT. BECAUSE I WAS CLOSE BY THE DEALERSHIP THE SERVICE PERSONNEL TOLD ME TO DRIVE THE MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP SO I DID. THEY TOLD ME MY ENGINE HAD TO BE REPLACED. FOR THE SECOND TIME MIND YOU. 1ST TIME WAS A YEAR PRIOR. SO THEY KEPT MY CAR FOR A WEEK AND 2DAYS. GET MY CAR BACK A WEEK LATER I'M DRIVING ON MY WAY TO WORK AND THE FLASHING CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AGAIN. SO I TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE KNOCK SENSOR THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED THIS TIME. THEY REPAIR IT THE SAME DAY. MEAN WHILE WAITING I FIND AN VIDEO ON YOU TUBE ABOUT THE VERY PROBLEM I WAS HAVING WITH MY VEHICLE. BUT IT'S FROM THE HYUNDAI MANUFACTURES ABOUT THE 2014-2018 SANTA FE ,SONATA AND TUSON VEHICLE ABOUT KNOWN MALFUNCTIONS AND PROBLEMS THESE VEHICLES ARE HAVING AND WOULD HAVE. SO I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THESE ARE NOT RECALLS. NOW AGAIN YESTERDAY 1/16/21

The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at undisclosed speeds, the vehicle lost automotive power and the vehicle failed to stop while depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle was allowed to decelerate and come to a stop. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the alternator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. In addition, the contact stated that the engine was previously replaced and the contact was concerned that the warning lights on the instrument panel might not properly display because the check engine warning light had not illuminated during the previous failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 121,000.

I had just dropped my son off at the barbershop by my apartment. As I left the parking lot I proceeded to pull out into the street,as i tried to accelerate the car sputtered & lost all power. I then coasted into a nearby Wendy's. I parked & tried to crank the car to no avail. I then noticed a burning smell followed by some smoke. I had no dash lights prior to indicate any issues. I ended up calling my insurance to get help with the vehicle. Long story short the starter, coil pack & plugs along with the engine had to be replaced.2

The car is 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe with a defective crankshaft. The car is leaking oil. I called Hyundai and they noted that although they have recall 168 the VIN for my car doesn't match a recall that is on their website. I spoke to a Hyundai case manager today who said that even though my car has the defective crankshaft they will not repair the vehicle because it beyond 100,000 and the recall is expired. I am seeking help from the NHTSA as my car should be covered under this recall. I took it to an independent shop that noted that my car should be covered. I have photo and documents to prove that my car should be covered under this recall. My VIN just doesn't match their records and they are denying my claim.

The rear hatch closes automatically even if somebody is under the hatch putting items in the trunk without going back up. This is dangerous especially if children are near the hatch. It also at times opens when the button on the hatch is pushed but does not close automatically. The Hyundai Dealership Alexandria (1707 Mount Vernon Avenue) was uninterested in the issue and said they would charge $370 to look at the problem. Also for the safety recall of the ABS system, the earliest appointment at the same dealership was September 7 even though this sounded like a serious recall.

I went to a drive through car wash. Put my car in neutral and it drives your car through the wash. Once it was done I changed to drive and tapped lightly to get out. I was going to have the car wash attendant wipe down my car. As I approached him my brakes wouldn’t work and the car continued to accelerate despite not pressing down on the gas pedal. None of my electrical lights were working. It took me onto a busy street in Chicago and kept accelerating at full speed. I was trying to brake, put it into neutral or drive, use emergency brake system and nothing was working. I was swerving to avoid hitting other cars or pedestrians. I erratically drove about 1.5 blocks until I hit another SUV. All my airbags deployed. My full trauma work up was negative at the hospital. I am not sure if anyone sustained major injuries in the other car. I filed an insurance claim and my car was deemed a total loss. Insurance company thinks there was definitely an electrical shortage but did not further investigate. They said it would take more money to investigate the cause rather than paying a lump sum for car. I filed a claim case with Hyundai 2 days after the accident. The initial representative said a case manager would call within 5-7 business days and would like the car preserved in case of investigation. I have called over 5 times and have never received a call back nor an initial call from the case manager assigned. There was no active recalls out at the time and the car was serviced a month prior at a Hyundai dealership. Since the accident occurred we received a new recall that the anti-lock brake system could malfunction and cause an electrical short. But according to recall notice there is still no remedy available.

RPM WENT UP TO 5000 BUT SHIFTING THE TRANSMISSION INTO SPORTS MODE AND DOWNSHIFTING AND UPSHIFTING MADE NO DIFFERENCE IN THE SPEED OF THE VEHICLE. SPEED REMAINED THE SAME, ENGINE ROARED AS IF IN NEUTRAL. I PULLED OFF THE INTERSTATE, CUT OFF THE VEHICLE FOR SEVERAL MINUTES, RESTARTED THE VEHICLE, RETURNED TO THE INTERSTATE AND COULD ACCELERATE. THIS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES IN 2017 AND 2018 BOTH ON THE HIGHWAY AND CITY STREETS. IN 2018, TAKEN TO PEARSON HYUNDAI AND COULD NOT BE FIXED BECAUSE NO ERROR CODES. AFTER A DANGEROUS, IDENTICAL INCIDENT ON THE INTERSTATE IN MAY 2019, TAKEN TO PEARSON HYUNDAI. THEY PERFORMED A TCU AND ECU SOFTWARE UPDATE MAY 21, 2019. THIS LATEST INCIDENT IS A REPEAT OF THE MAY 2019 PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM IS RANDOM AND UNPREDICTABLE BUT OCCURS ON BOTH HIGHWAY AND STREET SPEEDS. My engine failed. Dealership put it through an oil consumption test which it failed. They ended up keeping my car for 3 weeks to build a new engine, add new belts, new spark plugs and new filters to go with the repair. After completing this repair they told me they noticed my air bag light on. They recommended a new sensor to fix it. Which I was to pay $600 for. I agreed to this and had it done. I picked up the car and had it for 3 weeks before the airbag light came back on. I brought it back to dealership. They assessed it and told me the problem actually came from the seat and the total.to repair the whole seat would be $2500+ I am the only owner of this car. It has never been in an accident where the airbag deployed. It is in it's original state. I feel this is a huge safety concern that should be looked into.

The turbocharger failed on my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0T. It is still on the vehicle and available for inspection upon request. The turbo failure caused a severe loss of engine power, making acceleration dangerously slow and unpredictable, especially when merging onto highways or passing vehicles. This sudden reduction in power could have caused a rear-end collision or made it impossible to avoid faster-moving traffic. Yes. The failure was confirmed by two independent service centers: Mavis Tires and Brakes, and Tires and Trust in Pensacola, FL. Both observed loss of turbo boost and excessive oil consumption consistent with turbocharger failure. Yes. The vehicle was also inspected by Allen Turner Hyundai in Pensacola, FL. They did not detect the failure during their inspection, but the issue persisted and was documented by the other two shops. The check engine light came on around 118,000–119,000 miles. After that, the turbocharger lost significant power, making the vehicle unable to accelerate normally. At the same time, the engine began consuming oil at an abnormally high rate, requiring frequent top-offs between oil changes. This suggests internal oil seal failure in the turbo or related component issues. These symptoms are consistent with failed turbocharger bearings or seals, oil starvation, or blocked oil lines causing overheating and damage. Such failures can release oil and metal debris into the intake and exhaust systems, risking further engine damage or even fire. Hyundai previously issued a software update (KSDS) to detect early bearing wear in these engines, which my vehicle received in 2019 (Service Campaign 953). Despite this, the turbo failure still occurred, suggesting the underlying design or manufacturing issue may not have been fully resolved. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this pattern of failures, given the safety risks of sudden power loss and potential fire hazard from oil leaks.

He drove it around a parking lot and heard a rattling noise, He tried to get it to his shop, the rattling got louder and louder, He was scared the engine would lock up, We parked it and had to have it towed to my residence. In the last 6-8 months I had to put oil in my car EVERY week. I have taken to mi mechanic several times checking for leaks. I have been to the dealer checking to see if they there has been any recalls. Due to this situation I have NO transportation. I am already financially struggling and now I have to figure out what to do I have already paid out of pocket for the ABS to be replaced as well. The brakes and rotors need to be replaced every 3-6 months. They have been fixed at least 4 times under warranty. Every time I take the car in I get asked if I drove through the mountains because they are fried. This vehicle has never been in the mountains because I fear what will happen if it really were driven through the mountains. However, no excessive braking occurs to cause them to be ruined every 3-6 months. I am at the point I’m curious if automatic braking is causing it to heat up and burn them. The incident below is the last time I had them replaced. I’m currently looking to sell the vehicle because of the number of times I’ve had to go in and get them replaced.

The engine seized due to an issue with the oil plug and another part, leading to a lack of oil in the system. The vehicle is currently with Hyundai and available for inspection upon request. How Safety Was Put at Risk: While driving on the highway, I suddenly lost acceleration (below 40mphs). I was forced to pull over to the left side of the highway where it was shallow, where I risked being hit by passing vehicles until there was a safe break in traffic, allowing me to maneuver to an exit. This created a hazardous situation for both myself and other drivers. Reproduction or Confirmation of the Problem: The issue has been confirmed by an independent automotive technician, who diagnosed the problem as a blown engine caused by a lack of oil. The vehicle is now with Hyundai for further inspection. Inspection by Others: The vehicle has been inspected by an independent service center and is currently being inspected by Hyundai. No other parties, such as the police or insurance representatives, have been involved. Warning Lamps or Messages Prior to Failure: The only warning sign prior to the incident was the check engine light blinking at the time of the failure. There were no other warning lamps, messages, or symptoms before the engine seized. The vehicle was within the oil range limit of 7,500 miles at the time of the incident. Additional Notes: The incident occurred suddenly, without prior warning or indication of an issue. Based on the diagnosis and known issues with the oil plug, I believe this failure was caused by a defect.

We noticed that we had our airbag light was on in our dashboard along with that we also notice that the buttons and horn did not work in to the steering wheel. When we took the car to get checked by the Hyundai dealership in Lakewood. We were told that the clock spring was the cause of this problem to the airbag, horn, and the buttons not working. They told us that this clock spring part it was broken and it needed to be replaced. Our concern is the number one safety which making sure that all of the airbag and horn to be working. When this was communicated to the dealership person he response was that he could not say anything much about other then him saying that it was not under warranty and it was due to the mile of the car. Which I the moment we told them we totally understand about warranty and miles to the car but the safety of someone should not be put at risk just because of one part that connects all of this things. To us this is safety concern due to the airbag and horn not working. We are not sure by us reporting this would be something can be considered for a recall or be done about without costing any money to those who own a vehicle like this.

I purchased this vehicle 05/05/2019 as a certified pre-owned vehicle from the dealership. I have kept regular maintenance on the car. Three same day of purchase, the engine quit as I was driving it. I was making a left hand turn and it quit while I was in the intersection. My children were in the car. Hyundai replaced the engine, but about a year and half later, that engine did the exact same thing. This time I was coming off the freeway. I can't imagine the possibilities if this had happened while on the freeway. Now, the engine is making the same sound as with the first two engines. I took it to Hyundai, and they claim it's normal. The car has issues where I will be trying to safely merge into traffic and it will hesitate. There are multiple intermittent issues that occur, but the scariest is knowing how the first two engines felt/ran and sounded prior to their failure, and once again experiencing those exact issues. How many times should an engine have to be replaced in a four year period? It is very likely that one of my children could be fatally injured depending on where we happen to be when this most recent engine fails, because it will - guaranteed. Online forums are full of thousands of people who purchased vehicles from Hyundai that have the EXACT same issue. No check engine warning. Just a rough sounding engine, and then it will just quit as they're driving. Something needs to be done. Lastly, June 18th, 2023 I had a collision with another vehicle. I collided with another vehicle, my front end to the other drivers driver's side. My air bags did not deploy. Nobody was injured, but I truly feel my airbags should have went off for the amount of damage to my front end. Pictures will be included.

While driving down a California freeway, the sunroof of my wife's 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport exploded without warning. Glass rained down on my niece and nephew in the backseat and caused my wife to swerve a bit in surprise. Luckily there was no one else on the road and no one was hurt by the glass. She was not near anyone or anything, plus nothing fell into the backseat so we know that it wasn't anything that impacted the glass causing it to break. Upon further review, this is a problem with Hyundai vehicles and it looks like they are the subject of multiple class-action lawsuits for it. This is the second time something like this has happened. In 2016, my wife was leasing a Sonata and the sunroof exploded unprovoked. The dealership took responsibility that time and one of the mechanics stated that it was "a known issue".

I was accelerating on the highway and my RMPS shot the whole way up over 7,000 then bottomed out. I lost speed so I pulled over. Another car pulled over to inform me my car was on fire. I turned the car off and the fire went out. The car was towed to Blaise Alexander (dealership) in Altoona, PA. The mechanic reported that a connector rod went through the oil pan, engine block, and brake starter. He kept repeating to me "I've never seen anything like this before". He reached out to Hyundai to ask if they would cover repairs (starting at $13,790). Hyundai said no. I believe this incident was more than mechanical, and is related to the open recall. I attempted twice to have my car repaired under the recall but the dealership "didn't have the part".

Unable to restart engine for about 30 minutes. Engine able to restart, then shutoff again a few minutes later at 45mph. There have been reports of unusually high motor oil consumption with the Theta 2 engine. There are no leaks, smells, smoke (from engine or exhaust) however, I must continuously add motor oil and check levels about every 100 miles. Oil level will reduce from max line to almost empty very quickly, maybe 1-3 weeks after refilling. All service maintenance is timely and done at authorized shops (Goodyear and Hyundai dealership). Dealership will perform oil consumption test to determine if eligible for powertrain warranty. Further research shows Hyundai denied many claims related to this issue.

Just received another letter from Hyundai (First one in Feb./March this one in June) telling me about the same problem with the ABS System and how it might short out and cause an engine fire. STILL NO REMEDY! The letter said I'd receive a second notice ...I guess they meant a third notice! What's taking so long to find a fix??? I'm supposed to be confident taking this vehicle on a trip knowing it may short out and cause a fire at any time while driving or parked!?? This is not acceptable.

While traveling at approximately 60mph I decelerated to make a left turn through a busy intersection (evening rush hour traffic). While decelerating, I felt the car give a "shudder" at which point I looked to the dash to see the check engine light blinking, then the battery light illuminated. At this point, while passing through the intersection turning left, the engine shut off, as well as the power steering. The car coasted through the intersection and came to a stop barely out of the crossing lane. It would not restart and I was forced to push the car with my family inside to a safer position. Prior to this event there had been no drivability issues, no other times that warning lights had come on. The only issue of note that I have had for this vehicle is a seemingly excessive amount of engine oil being consumed. The car is at a dealership now and I am told that the engine needs to be replaced, with no explanation for the failure.

THE V6 2017 SANTA FE SUV IS ADVERTISED IN MANY CAR MAGAZINES AND BY HYUNDAI TO TOW 5,000. LBS. I TOLD THE SALES MANAGER THE SPECS OF MY CAMPER. HE SAID IT WOULD NOT HAVE A PROBLEM TOWING MY CAMPER THAT WEIGHS 3,200. I SAID IF YOU GET IT PREPARED FOR TOWING, MEANING, HITCH, BRAKE BOX AND WIRE FOR LIGHTS, I WILL BUY IT. THE DEAL WAS MADE. I TOWED A FEW TIMES THEN HAD A BAD SHAKING IN THE REAR. THE SERVICE MANAGER TRIED TO TELL ME I WAS TOWING TOO MUCH WEIGHT. IMPOSSIBLE. IT'S JUST ME AND A SMALL DOG. I ARGUED WITH ALLEN TURNER HYUNDAI IN PENSACOLA, FL AND THE CORPORATE OFFICE. THEY BELIEVED WHAT THE DEALERSHIP SAID. I TOLD THEM I CAN GO WEIGH IT ALL ON DOT SCALES TO PROVE IT. SO THEY ENDED UP FIXING IT THAT TIME. I DIDN'T TOW FOR AWHILE BECAUSE OF COVID. THE FIRST TIME I DID, ON THE WAY HOME IT STARTED SHAKING. I GO TO THE DEALER. HE TOLD ME THE RIGHT REAR PASSENGER TIRE WAS SEPARATING INSIDE. IT WOULD NEED ALIGNMENT AND STRUTS. THEY WERE NOT GOING TO PAY FOR IT EVEN WITH THE CAR WITH LOW MILES STILL UNDER WARRANTY. THEY OFFERED ME SOMETHING OFF THEIR USED LOT. WHICH I CONSIDERED IF IT HAD THE SAFETY FEATURES THAT I ORIGINALLY BOUGHT ON MY SANTA FE. NO, THEY OFFERED A BASIC SMALL TRUCK. I'M OLDER AND I HAVE GOTTEN USED TO THE SAFETY FEATURES. THE SALESMAN TALKED DOWN TO ME, TRIED TO INTIMIDATE ME AND PRACTICALLY CALLED ME STUPID. I WAS SUPPOSED TO SEE THE SERVICE MANAGER BUT HE DISMISSED ME . I'VE BOUGHT THREE CARS FROM THIS DEALER USING THE SAME SALESMAN. THEN WHEN I HAVE A PROBLEM THEY TREAT ME LIKE THIS. I HAVE TESTIMONIES FROM OTHER CAMPER TRAILER HAULERS WITH THE SAME CAR THAT EVEN TOW A HIGHER WEIGHT CAMPER. THEY HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS. I WILL ATTACH PHOTOS OF THEIRS ALSO. THANK YOU [XXX] WHEN I'M TOWING IT ALL SOUNDS GOOD AND WORKS GOOD. I WOULDN'T KNOW THE CAMPER WAS BACK THERE. WHILE DRIVING MY 2017 HYUNDAI SANTA FE SPORT 2.0T TO ENTER THE FREEWAY, THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE NORMALLY. IT STARTED TO SHAKE AND FELT LIKE THE ENGINE WAS "MISFIRING" AFTER SEVERAL MINUTES, I WAS ABLE TO GET UP TO 60MPH. I TRIED TAKING MY FOOT OFF OF THE ACCELERATOR AND PRESSING IT AGAIN BUT IT WOULD ONLY LOSE SPEED AND THEN I'D HAVE TO WORK MY WAY UP TO 60 MPH. I WAS TRAVELLING STRAIGHT AND ON A FLAT ROAD. ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON WHEN FOOT WAS ON ACCELERATOR, THEN IT WENT OFF. ONCE I WAS OFF THE FREEWAY AND TRIED TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN FROM A STOP, CAR WOULDN'T ACCELERATE GOING UP THE INCLINE AND THE CAR BEHIND ME ALMOST HIT MY TAIL END. FINALLY,I TURNED LEFT TO GO UP THE HILL TOWARD MY HOUSE, I COULD ONLY GET UP TO 15 MPH BUT RPMS WERE BETWEEN 3500-4000. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC BEHIND ME BUT I WAS AFRAID I WASN'T GOING TO MAKE IT UP THE STREET OR THAT SOME CAR WOULD COME UP BEHIND ME AND MY CAR WOULD STOP. IN ORDER FOR A CAR TO BE SAFE IT NEEDS TO BE RELIABLE IN ACCELERATION AS MUCH AS BRAKING AND STEERING! I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT AT THE DEALERSHIP DAY AFTER TOMORROW.

IT USUALLY WORKS FINE, UNLESS ANOTHER VEHICLE CUTS IN FRONT, EVEN IF THERE IS ENOUGH TIME TO BRAKE. I HAVE TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES MANUALLY TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. I NOW FEAR USING THE CRUISE CONTROL AT ALL, AS IT DOES NOT PERFORM CORRECTLY 100% OF THE TIME. THE DEALER SAID THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG, BUT THIS IS A VERY REAL ISSUE THAT PUTS MY FAMILY AT RISK. TWO ISSUES: SEVERE PROBLEM - WHEN DRIVING AT A RATE OF APPROXIMATELY 35MPH TODAY ON A MAJOR CITY THOROUGHFARE, OUR 2017 HYUNDAI SANTA FE 2.0T ULTIMATE SUFFERED A SUDDEN AND COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER (ENGINE AND ALL ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS INCLUDING LIGHTING). AFTER COMING TO A STOP, THE VEHICLE WAS STRANDED IN PLACE UNTIL IT WAS ABLE TO START UP AGAIN MANY MINUTES LATER. FORTUNATELY NO ONE WAS PHYSICALLY HARMED AS THE INDIVIDUAL DRIVING BEHIND OUR VEHICLE WAS OBSERVANT ENOUGH TO IDENTIFY THE ISSUE (DESPITE A LACK OF BRAKE LIGHTS OR HAZARDS) AND STOP IN TIME. NO VISIBLE ENGINE LIGHT OR FAULT CODE WAS TRIGGERED. LESS SEVERE PROBLEM: ON A REGULAR BASIS, THE VEHICLE SUFFERS ABRUPT AND SUSTAINED LOSS OF POWER IN MERGING SITUATIONS (ESPECIALLY WHEN TURNING ON CITY STREETS FROM A STOP). THIS SEEMS TO BE FROM AN OVERACTIVE OR OTHERWISE INEFFECTIVE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM/PROGRAMMING. DESPITE EVEN PLANNING FOR THE POSSIBLE LOSS OF POWER, THIS HAS STILL RESULTED IN A NUMBER OF "NEAR MISS" SITUATIONS. A WARRANTY VISIT HAS BEEN SCHEDULED FOR THESE ISSUE AND WE WILL GLADLY PROVIDE THE RESULTS AND/OR OTHER UPDATES UPON REQUEST. WE ARE, HOWEVER, SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING SELLING THE VEHICLE AT A LOSS DUE TO THESE TWO ISSUES. *TR

ADDITIONALLY THE LIGHTS OF THE TRAILER CONSTANTLY RUN EVEN WHEN THE POWER IS COMPLETELY OFF. LASTLY THE HARNESS WHERE THE TRAILERS ELECTRICAL PLUGS INTO ON THE VEHICLE, POPS OUT OF PLACE WHEN PLUGGING IT IN. IN TURN CAUSING ME TO RESEAT THE VEHICLES HARNESS EACH TIME. IN THE AFFECTED VEHICLE, THE WIRES IN THE CAN WIRING HARNESS ASSEMBLY AND AIRBAG WIRING HARNESS ASSEMBLY MAY BE DAMAGED BY THE PASSENGER SEAT'S HEIGHT ADJUSTER MECHANISM. A METAL 3RD PARTY POWER INVERTER WAS POSITIONED UNDERNEATH THE PASSENGER SEAT. PRIOR SEAT ADJUSTMENTS CAUSED THE SHEATH AROUND THE HARNESSES TO BECOME BARE, EXPOSING THE ELECTRICAL WIRING. THE METAL POWER INVERTER BECOME LODGED AGAINST THE WIRING CAUSING A SHORT IN THE WIRING AND CAUSING THE ENTIRE VEHICLE'S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM TO FAIL. THE EPB (ELECTRONIC PARKING BREAK) BECAME ENGAGED AND IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. ALTHOUGH ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE 3RD PARTY POWER INVERTER WAS UNDER THE SEAT, THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN DRIVEN 4 TIMES WITH IT UNDER IT, TOTALING LESS THAN 800 MILES. IT IS NOT KNOWN HOW LONG IT WOULD TAKE FOR THAT BOX TO RUB AGAINST THE SHEATH ON THE HARNESS AND BARE THE WIRING, THEREFORE IT IS SUSPECTED THAT THE POWER SEAT ADJUSTER CAUSED THE WIRES TO BECOME BARE AND THAT RECALL #141 SAFETY CAMPAIGN #16V145000 MAY NOT HAVE BEEN PROPERLY RESOLVED. WE BELIEVE THE SEAT ADJUSTER CAUSED THE WIRES TO BECOME BARE, PRIOR TO THE INVERTER BEING PLACED UNDER THE SEAT. THE INVERTER WAS POSITIONED SUCH THAT IT WASN'T MAKING CONTACT WITH THE BARE WIRE, UNTIL THE SEAT WAS ADJUSTED ON 7/2/2017. THE CAR WAS NOT DRIVEN ON 7/3/2016. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED ON 7/4/216 AS THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN ACROSS RAILROAD TRACKS. IT IS BELIEVED THE INVERTER WAS THEN JARRED AGAINST THE BARE WIRE, CAUSING THE SHORT. THE DEALERSHIP HAS NOT VALIDATED THIS; THEY ARE SUGGESTING IT WAS THE INVERTER THAT CAUSED THE WIRES TO BECOME BARE. OUR OPINION IS THAT THE INVERTER WAS NOT THERE LONG ENOUGH TO CAUSE THAT WIRING TO BECOME BARE. IT WASN'T UNTIL I DISCOVERED THIS PREVIOUS RECALL THAT EVERYTHING STARTED TO MAKE SENSE. IT IS A $5,300.00 REPAIR BECAUSE THE OTHER WIRES INVOLVED THAT ARE BARE ARE FOR THE AIRBAGS.

AFTER READING THESE COMPLAINTS WE ARE WONDERING IF WE HAD THE SAME ISSUE AS SOMEONE ELSE WHO REPORTED AND IS THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT. WE FIGURED WE WOULD REPORT THIS. WE ARE ALSO WONDERING IF OTHER PEOPLE ARE HAVING SIMILAR ACCIDENTS SINCE THERE HAS BEEN A MAJOR ISSUE GETTING PARTS TO REPAIR SAID CAR (CAR HAS NOW BEEN OFF THE ROAD FOR 11 WEEKS MOST PARTS REQUIRED FOR REPAIR HAVE BEEN EXTERNALLY BACKORDERED AND HYUNDAI HAS BEEN EXTREMELY UNHELPFUL TO HELP US GET OUR CAR REPAIRED). THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD, WHILE SLOWLY DEPRESSING THE BREAKS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. UPDATED 11/2/2017*JS
