Indian Motorcycle competes head-to-head with Harley-Davidson in the US cruiser, bagger and touring segments and indirectly with BMW K1600, Honda Gold Wing and Kawasaki Voyager in dressed touring. Indian's 2013 relaunch under Polaris brought modern engineering and reliability that the original Indian was famous for lacking. American Flat Track dominance with the FTR750 has elevated the brand's racing profile alongside Harley's X86 program.

About Indian Motorcycle
George Hendee, a former bicycle racing champion, partnered with Swedish-American engineer Carl Oscar Hedstrom in 1901 to produce motorized bicycles in Springfield, Massachusetts. The 1901 Indian Camelback was the first production model. By 1907 Indian was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, peaking at 32,000 units in 1913. Multiple Great Depression-era bankruptcies and the 1953 closure of the original Springfield factory ended the original company. Polaris Industries (already owners of Victory Motorcycles, founded 1997) acquired the Indian trademark in 2011 and built the new headquarters and manufacturing plant in Spirit Lake, Iowa.
