How to read a Jeep Cherokee VIN — every digit explained
Every Jeep Cherokee carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Cherokee.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Cherokee VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Vehicle Speed Control:cruise Control
What's wrong. Malfunction of fuel injection system throttle postition sensor could cause intermittent high engine idle speed immediately after starting engine.
Risk. High engine idle when car is first placed in gear couldresult in unexpected acceleration.
Fix. Replace throttle position sensors with sensors that would send correct signals to the fuel injection system.
Vehicle Speed Control:accelerator Pedal
What's wrong. Vehicle description: multipurpose passenger vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. This is not a safety recall in accordance with federal regulation 573. However, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. Drivers can mistakenly step on the accelerator pedal when they intend to step on the brake pedal.
Risk. Pedal misapplication by a driver can cause unintended acceleration.
Fix. Dealers will install a shift interlock on the automatic transmission of these vehicles.
Service Brakes, Hydraulic:foundation Components:disc:rotor
What's wrong. Vehicle description: passenger and multi-purpose vehicles originally sold or currently registered in the states of connecticut, illinois, indiana, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, or wisconsin, and the district of columbia. The front disc brake rotors can experience severe corrosion if operated for an extensive period in the "salt belt." if the rotors are not replaced, the corrosion can eventually compromise the structural integrity of the stamped steel center hub section of the rotor.
Risk. The reduced strength can allow the cast iron wear surface to separate from the hub, reducing the brake effectiveness of the vehicle.
Fix. Dealers will replace these rotors with rotors that are coated with a corrosion protection.
Service Brakes, Hydraulic:antilock/traction Control/electronic Limited Slip
What's wrong. Vehicle description: vehicles equipped with antilock brake system (abs). The antilock brake system (abs) hydraulic control unit can experience excessive brake actuator piston seal wear which could cause pump-motor deterioration.
Risk. If this occurs, the abs function would be lose and reduced power assist would be experienced during vehicle braking. The instrument panel warning lights will signal system impairment and the base manual brakes will remain functional.
Fix. Dealers will test the vehicle's abs and repair as necessary. The warranty on all abs components will be extended to 10 years or 100,000 miles (except for the brake actuator piston assembly and the pump-motor assembly which will have a lifetime coverage). Owners will be reimbursed for previous abs component repair costs.
Service Brakes, Hydraulic:foundation Components:hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings
What's wrong. Improper insertion/crimping of the hose-to-end fittings of the high pressure hose on the anti-lock brake system can cause detachment of the hose from the abs system, and discharge of hydraulic fluid.
Risk. Detachment of the hose from the abs system causes theloss of the abs function and hydraulic brake assist, leaving only manual brakesand decreasing stopping ability, which could result in an accident. Discharge ofhydraulic fluid in the area of the hot exhaust system could result in an enginecompartment fire.
Fix. Replace the abs high pressure hose.
Service Brakes, Hydraulic:foundation Components:hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings
What's wrong. There may be hydraulic fluid contamination from condensation formation that can plug the abs brake booster pump filter; stress corrosion of the master cylinder snap ring has been traced to chlorine leaking from the low pressure hydraulic hose which may cause it to break; front brake hose to tire interference which may cause failure of the brake hose.
Risk. Contamination of the hydraulic fluid can causemalfunctioning of the anti-lock brake system; low pressure hose leakage causesloss of brake fluid and also results in corrosion and failure of the mastercylinder snap ring, resulting complete brake failure; failure of the front brakehose due to hose to tire interference will cause failure of one half of thebrake system resulting in a longer stopping distance than expected.
Fix. Replace abs low pressure hose; rebuild master brake cylinder; inspect, service interference problems, and replace front brake hose as necessary.

Although a winding road the axle snapped during a straight portion.

Brakes failed to operate causing accident; master cylinder was checked by inspector and found to have leak that allowed all fluid to escape without any warning
I was involved in a single vehicle accident at 5 am on October 5, 2023 on a rural road in Deland, Florida. I was on an unfamiliar road with a sharp curve and as I was trying to slow down the I was unable to slow down or steer the vehicle. It slammed into a cluster of trees and immediately the engine caught fire. I crawled out of the vehicle in pain from the force of the crash and was disoriented. A good Samaritan came to my aide and called the Volusia County Sherriff. I can remember my 2019 Jeep Cherokee Latitude was fully engulfed in very intense flames in less than 8 minutes. It was so intense it set fire to the wooded area. This wasn't the first problem I had with this vehicle. I purchased this vehicle new from a dealer in Bowie, MD in 2019. Since that time I replaced all 4 tires due to numerous flat tires starting around 20K miles. I replaced the battery at less than 25K miles. I had braking issues when going downhill in the Washington DC area which caused me to brake hard. I complained and the dealer said they did an inspection. I also had other auto service companies perform checks. I have most of the service records which have cost me so much. I am a disable Gulf War Veteran on a fixed income. I am now waiting for VIN verification by GEICO because the vehicle burned so hot that the engine block and everything metal (melted). Had I not gotten out so soon I would have burned to death.

Electrical System 2,628 Read
My mom bought a jeep grand cherokee, 2000. On july 25 we went into town to the hardware store, my sister and her granddaughter stayed in the car with the air condidtion on and the engine running. We were (mom and i) gone 7-8 minutes, and when we got back in the car; put the seat belts on, put my foot on the brake and put the jeep in reverse and we took off backwards across the naylors parking lot across third street, up and over the curb, went between two trees into the parking lot between the fire station and city hall where we hit a parked car and the parked car hit a telephone guide wire, we hit a tree that finally stopped us. After doing some research on the computer i know this is not the first time this has happened with powering uncontrollably backwards with the jeep grand cherokees. The witnesses stated we were going about 30 miles an hour backwards. I tried to use the brakes but it was out of control. I reported this to chrysler and they did an investigation denying my claim. *la

Went to start car wouldn't start or turn over. Received jump from roadside assistance and waited 20 min before attempting to drive to the nearest auto zone (2 miles). Once i started driving the dashboard lights started flickering and as soon as i came to a red light at a very busy 3 lane intersection i was in the middle lane and my car shut off & wouldn't turn back on. At this point, my only option was to sit without any power, therefore no hazard lights, and wait for someone to hit me as i was unable to leave my vehicle due to high risk of being hit by a car. During the terrifying time of waiting eventually i did get hit. Which caused a three car accident & pile-up on this very busy road. I was the front vehicle and my jeep is probably totaled and i will be going to doctor tomorrow, the middle vehicle received the most damage & the passengers were hurt & went to hospital, the 3rd vehicle (truck) was very damaged but the driver was not injured. I then called 911 & we filled out a police report & my car was towed & the police drove me home like a criminal. This accident was caused by my jeep's electrical malfunction. I do not currently see a recall for anything by vin or by make/model. Please address this immediately as i do not want others to be effected as i was at the fault of jeep. *dt*jb

Traveling on highway i 94 at 70mph 5pm jan 10th, 2018, came into contact with vehicle while merging into center lane. His car forces mine into a spin, i crashed head on into the concrete barrier/wall separating the east and west bound lanes. None of the airbags in the entire vehicle deployed. Neither the driver, passenger or side curtain airbags deployed. I survived but had two breaks in the sternal chest plate, a fractured right rib and broken left wrist requiring surgery resulting in screws and plates installed. Medical bills over $80k i was wearing my seatbelt the entire time. That day the weather was clear and approx 40-45 degrees. Through the dealer, i contacted the manufacturers customer service which directed me to their forensic team so they could obtain the black box in the vehicle and access to the car. I have serious concerns regarding not only my safety but others that own the same make and model. I am 73 years old and everyone from the ambulance driver to the state trooper that was on the scene of the accident said that i have a lawsuit here. I do not want to file suit. I don't have the time or the inclination to go that direction but i feel that the manufacturer owes me and the other customers something should they find themselves in my position. The manufacturers representative was not very helpful and i feel that i am getting the brush off and they have not returned my calls. I am hesitant to be a complainer. I hope that jeep/chrysler address this safety issue for me as well as others that may have the same concerns. *tt *js

Was traveling to work and there was a car ahead of me. This person had out of state plates and was not paying attention, speeding up and then slowing down several time. The person behind me and passed both of us. In fact he was the one the i ran into. Then when i approached the next town to get on the 4 lane, there is a turn off that everyone uses to get to the school. I don't remember what happened to the green out of state car, i think he did a quick left turn in front of me, and then i hit the guy that passed both of us. He was stopped waiting for the car ahead of him to turn. Needless to say, i was charged with failing to stop in an assured clear distance. The sun was bright and i seen no brake or turn signals. The front end of my 10 day old vehicle sustained over 8600 dollars in damage so far. My concern is why did the air bags not go off at 50 mph when i hit the back of his 2012 buick? I was taken by ambulance to be checked out as the seat belt hurt my chest and possible broken finger. Later that night i returned to the hospital for a head ct and chest xray for dizziness and headaches. I still have head aches when i bend over and will most likely consult my doctor for possible whip lash. The other driver was not hurt, but was told his vehicle was going to be total loss. We just bought this and now i am concerned about safety! Both the adjustor and i were concerned why they didn't deploy. The whole front end of my vehicle is destroyed. From bumper back to radiator, which was destroyed.

My jeep has about 26,000 miles on it, since i've purchased this vehicle brand new off the lot, it has been towed 6 times for engine failure. My engine is burning the oil, with out warning while driving, the car shuts off. The dealer insists this is normal, but it is not normal for a car to absorb or burn oil. *tr
I was driving on the highway and all of a sudden my car wanted me to shift into P to park while i was still in drive. My vehicle was hit passenger side as well in a hit and run incident. I pulled over and waited awhile and called the police then brought my vehicle home because it was not totaled. I tried to get coverage from my GEICO insurance but they were unable to help. Then February i was in a rear end collision from another gentleman on the way home from work. My vehicle was being repaired for a month and some change until i got it back. At first I thought it was the battery or alternator going bad, but a diagnostic test showed normal for both. I’ve tried different gas thinking it could be bad gasoline. When the vehicle shuts down it’s difficult to get it to restart. Now it is saying service 4WD which i believe is something with the transfer case because its not the axels or differentials which I had replaced from Jeff D Ambrosia. Looking for assistance to get my vehicle driving safe and possible reimbursement or help, I have all my receipts from what has been done to my vehicle since I first bought it in 06/20/20 For my birthday present. There is a lot of more information that i want an advisor or assistance to know as far as what i have already paid out of my own pocket with dates and receipts (battery, axels ,rear diffs , alternator , etc) and try to diagnose it from there. I know about the mechanisms myself and my buddy who is an authorized mechanic. I am sure that after hearing all the difficulties and safety issues i have had i may be able to get some serious help and even possibly with my right side of my vehicle ! Thanks

I was driving in the rain going the speed limit. My jeep hit a pool of water on the surface of the highway and started to skid and hydroploane. The next thing i knew it was flipping over and landed on the shoulder of the highway. I was lucky to be wearing my seat belt. I was suspended upside down by my seatbelt. I was able to unbuckle it and crawl out the drivers side window which was completely blown out. Seconds after i got out of the car it burst into flames and the entire vehicle was engulfed and burned completely inside and out. There was nothing left of it but burnt frame. As soon as the car came to a stop upside down, i smelled gas and just a minute or two later the car was totally burned up. *tr

Vehicle incident 09/23/08 approx. 2:55-3:00 p.m. On highway 90, milton, fl driving a 1997 jeep cherokee, 4 cars in total were involved i was stopped far back in a line of cars waiting for a red light to turn green. The line began to move up slowly, i let my foot up from the brake and within seconds the jeep accelerated forward, i immediately applied pressure to the brakes the car slowed temporarily but continued to surge forward in a jerking hopping motion. My vehicle impacted the car ahead of me. I looked down to make sure i was applying pressure to the brakes; my passenger was already checking as well. Seeing that i was (my foot never touched the gas pedal during any of this) and that the car was still pushing forward i was forced to turn off the ignition to stop the vehicle. The officer did not cite me though of course my vehicle was still responsible. The officer in her report stated that she believed the impact, to the car my jeep struck, was at 45 mp/h because of the amount of damage to the rear end. This of course was not possible since i was at a stopped position starting to coast forward; the extent of the damage was due to the jeep hitting the car multiple times as it continued to accelerate while i was braking. After the incident the car was taken to the dealer, no overt cause was found. Through personal research i have found similar incidents linked to the cruise control system (even when not turned on), because of this we are in the process of having it disconnected. My family is extremely tentative to drive the vehicle till this problem is resolved. *tr

1. Came out of gear when in park and crashed sustaining 5000.00 dollars in damage. Had received a letter from daimler-chrysler in 2002,however it was not dated stating the car could do this. No recalls were present at the time. They denied any problem when car crashed. Called an attorney who was a relative that told without a doubt (100%) the car would do this. He then called me back and stated he could not represent me because he represented daimler-chrysler. He was hired by chrysler after he bought a viper from them that was a lemon and he shoved it you know where and won. They realized what an outstanding attorney he was then hired him. Talk about family ethics. They finally installed the secondary detent system in 12/2008. I was told it was repaired. 2 the car is stalling at high speeds, during u turns, while at stop signs. It to dangerous to drive. Jeep keeps telling me they can not find anything on diagnostics. I was out of town 250 miles from home and they want me to drive an unsafe vehicle back to the. They have been rude, evasive and blaming me. After 500.00 there diagnostics showed nothing. It has been to 5 other mechanics and know one has been able to diagnose the problem. I now have a 1997 grand cherokee limited that is loaded that is dangerous and worth nothing. 3 if they insist on arbitration and a chance to fix it you will lose. It is worth your money to hire a lemon law attorney from the very beginning. *tr
Car was maintained at dealership. 1.5 years old, 31,000 miles. Last oil change and service at dealership was on 5/5/2017 with mileage of 29,056. Fire occurred on 6/10/2017. Driving 35 mph, straight down a small hill, first got warning light that brake fluid was low, followed by abs needs servicing, followed by many warning lights all at once. Gas pedal failed to work at that point, looked in rear view mirror, blue smoke was coming out of the car. Coasted to a dirt lot, got out, fire under drivers side front wheel area. Quickly spread to the rest of the engine compartment, destroying the car. From first warning message to pulled over was about 0.5 miles and about one minute. Please note that there was a uconnect update (the first for the car) on 6/2/2017, only eight days before the car was destroyed by fire. Including a picture of the engine compartment after the fire. *bf *tr

The two front airbags did not deploy. We was hit into a cement divider on freeway while going 65to 70 mph. Flipped rolled 5to6 times on all sides of car landed on the top and the front airbags did not deploy. Causing injury to driver and passenger
My son and i were in front and side impact crash with another vehicle on 4/24/17 with significant damage but no airbags deployed in our vehicle. Attached are a few photos of both vehicles for reference. We were driving a 2015 jeep cherokee and were hit by a driver who hydroplaned in a 2011 hyundai elantra. The reporting officer estimated my speed at impact was 40 mph. Airbags deployed in the other vehicle but not in ours. Considering the damage to the vehicle, force of impact and estimated travel speed at impact, i feel the jeep airbags failed from a safety standpoint and would like to know how to go about investigating this further with jeep. An accident report is available but did not upload due to the sensitive information contained within (vin #'s, names, insurance policy numbers, etc); however, the report can be provided under separate cover if needed.
Driving in the freeway and have an accident due to the malfunctioning front collision warning and the not working sensors
Airbags didn't deploy when I was hit by another driver whose speed was greater than 35mph n the other driver didn't break or slow down when hitting me on the driver n left passenger doors. I requested for my insurance company to preserve the vehicle for inspection but I don't know how long they can hold it because it was determined a TOTAL LOSS. When I was hit NONE of my airbags deployed n because of that, left side of my head n shoulder were slammed into driver's door. The vehicle was inspected by my insurance n a certified mechanic n due to impact n location of damage done to vehicle, both parties determined vehicle was TOTAL LOSS n couldn't b repaired. There were no warnings lamps or ANY messages n other symptoms of the problem prior to deployment failure.
Vehicle was in an accident on 06/27/2020. The vehicle was traveling at approximately 45 mph on a road flipped 6-8 times and impacted 3 trees. No airbags were deployed.*dt*jb
A car turned left as i was going straight and struck me at the front left side of the vehicle. The impact broke my tired completely off the vehicle smashing both the front and the entire side of my car with enough damage for me to have to kick my door multiple times in order to exit the car. After the first impact i lost control since a tire was missing and the vehicle hit a semi truck head on. No air bags deployed. Car is totaled and has frame damage. I contacted jeep and they have since done an investigation and told me i was not going fast enough for air bags to deploy and are now not returning my calls. When the investigator called me after he inspected the vehicle he was shocked that i said the car was totaled. The car was brand new i had it for 15 days. There was a recall performed on the air bags the day before and when reviewing the receipt showed that they worked on the car for less than 15 mins but had my car for 6 hours? Stating the recall was previously performed even though when i brought my car in to have a security system installed few days prior they said the recall needed to be performed and i set the appointment up. There is no way i was not going fast enough to have my safety features work in my brand new vehicle but i was going fast enough for my axle to snap and my tire to become disconnected from the vehicle. Jeep will not return my calls so i must take further action. Please assist me and take this seriously no one should feel unsafe in their vehicles.
I was traveling on route 18 a 55 mph road yesterday and hit some ice or center rumble strips in the road. My car went into a large ditch. The front end of my car is severely damaged. The driver side airbag did not deploy. I find this very disturbing. Definitely a safety issue!!
5 recalls since i bought it brand new september 2014 . When you step on the gas, car sometimes won't move then jerks into motion & other times it starts off in 3rd gear. Soon after purchase, noticed extreme condensation inside windows. Back right floor board was soaked with water? & condensation under the right front seat. Dealership can't figure it out. Most recently ,radio display not working properly. Noticed getting shocked when opening the door. Rear hatch sometimes won't open the the power lift button is pushed
