How to read a Lincoln Corsair VIN — every digit explained

Every Lincoln Corsair carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Corsair.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your Corsair VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
  • Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

The vehicle has never been involved in any accident or collision during our possession. • In April 2026, we discovered that the passenger-side rear brake light was no longer functioning. • Upon inspection, dealership personnel informed me that a small crack—approximately one inch in length—in the plastic housing of the driver-side rear turn signal allegedly allowed moisture intrusion that ultimately caused the passenger-side brake light failure. • I was further advised that the repair would not be covered under warranty and was presented with an estimate totaling $1,377.54 (copy enclosed). • The dealership speculated that the crack may have resulted from a minor parking-lot incident. However, no evidence was provided to establish either the cause of the crack or when it occurred. My concern is not merely the cost of the repair, although the quoted amount appears disproportionate to the nature of the issue. More importantly, the explanation provided raises serious concerns regarding the integrity and durability of the rear lighting assembly itself.

For the last three months, after the car sits for 12 hours or more, I get a "battery saver mode" on my phone and many of the online features won't work. Dealer measured the battery power on first visit - read 93 percent. Went to dealer a month later, battery read 59 percent. Dealer advised me to "drive the car more"! It takes 45 minutes to get to the dealer from our house, shouldn't have to drive longer than that. Something is draining the battery!

I have noticed that when the battery is lower than 85% available power sensor effectiveness is greatly reduced. This is noticed with vehicle going into remote battery saver mode and the Auto Start/Stop function ceases to function. This also greatly reduces front collision, rear cross traffic and pedestrian rear cross traffic warning especially. This is apparently due to a battery drain if any USB items are left plugged in. But after six month review on my second battery it is more apparent that the Corsair has an electrical parasitic drainage problem that adds to the problem. The fix by company is to drive the vehicle every day, which is not a practical option. I have used high end battery tester to prove my point and willing to spare it. The testing was conducted with all USB electrical ports disconnected and random battery testing conducted. I have included a log and will send photos of the battery tests if requested.

Based on your previous Recall Number 24V954000 created December 20, 2024 I believe it needs to be expanded to my vehicle series. I will now be taking it into dealership for 3rd time because the system is not charging battery.

2024 Corsair

I have written before about this VIN not being included in campaign 24V954000 merely because it was manufactured in June 2024 and have gotten no substantive reply. Now that the software fix is ruled inadequate there is a 2nd recall, still not including my vehicle. I have had 2 events of not being able to charge the car yet the Ford dealership claims there is no faults found. Now with the car being less than a year old the range of a full charge has decreased from 30+ miles when new to now being in the low 20's. No doubt in mind due to the automatic software updates that Ford/Lincoln have made. What more evidence do you require to include my VIN and defective battery in your recall, to protect my safety and investment. Since late 2024, we have received notification via the Lincoln mobile app that "certain vehicle features have been disabled to conserve battery life". Those made known via that notice were lack of ability to remotely lock/unlock the vehicle and also lack of ability to remote start the vehicle. Lincoln has read on several occasions the battery charge ranging from 50% to 62% while sharing that the battery charge should be at 80%...recommending via the app and verbally via phone communication, to drive the vehicle for 30 miles (10 on the highway) to charge the vehicle to the 80% threshold (like what?). The vehicle was taken a Lincoln dealer who was asked to diagnose the low charge on the battery and we were told the battery was fine. On 1/28/25 we received notice that we were given a software update (10.1.1) that was meant to enhance connectivity and conserve battery health, validating that Lincoln knows they have a problem. Since that update, the "Lincoln Welcome" feature aka "Lincoln Embrace" was disabled when the battery charge % as read by Lincoln was at 57%. This feature is both SAFETY and SECURITY related and a contributing factor as to why we selected Lincoln. The feature is meant to recognize our approach to the vehicle via the key fob and illuminate the inside and outside of the vehicle to allow us to see if any form of predator is inside the vehicle our outside around the perimeter. The component that failed is a known issue with the backup camera blue screen. My vin# isn't part of the recall but should be. The safety factor is well known. The dealer has reproduced the issue replaced the camera and applied the temporary fix but it failed again. The temporary fix also caused the 360 feature to freeze in one spot. There were no symptoms of the problem prior to the failure.

The screen in which my backup camera appears on seems to not be connected to my vehicle. This screen is also the primary method for controlling AC, radio, parking/camera, and general settings. Initially it was black and did not turn on. After doing some type of “reset” that was suggested during the Lincoln chat, it came on; however, it looks like it was updated with a Ford update, is blue, and looks completely different. It also does not sync to my vehicle and backup camera still does not work. I also have to manually turn radio off because the screen will literally stay on and run the battery. I was involved in a front-end collision a ~7 ton commercial vehicle, their fault due to distracted driving while using a cell phone, in which the forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and air bags failed. My Corsair had to be towed since it did not run after the accident, the drivers door could not open, so had to crawl out the passenger side. The Corsair was taken to an autobody shop that day and within a week their preliminary visual estimate without tearing down was over half the value of the vehicle and has since been declared a total loss. I sustained injuries in the accident that will be treated for some time and can only speculate that had systems worked, there could have been a chance for less severe injuries or potentially avoided the collision altogether. The autobody shop and insurance has all commented they were surprised none of the safety features worked, but no root cause has been documented as to why. At the time of the accident, all recalls were considered up-to-date and the vehicle has been very well maintained to by a Ford dealer and to the specifications of the owners manual. There were no warning lamps.

Despite multiple service visits, the issue remains unresolved, with Lincoln attributing the problem to a system update that has been repeatedly delayed. Chronology of Issues and Service Attempts: 1.Two Weeks After Leasing (February 2024) oThe collision prevention system began failing. oAdditional issue: Passenger-side windshield wiper fluid failure. oVehicle was returned to the dealer for service. oVehicle was returned the next day with the same collision system issue unresolved. 2.Second Service Attempt (March 2024) oThe Windshield wiper fluid issue was resolved. oCollision prevention system issue persisted. oLincoln informed me that the issue would be resolved through an automatic system update by the end of 2024. While driving on the freeway with the cruise set at 70MPH, the sign recognition software all of a sudden picked up the 35MPH speed limit from the adjacent service drive and abruptly slowed the vehicle down to 35MPH. This happened on another freeway which had a service drive so there is definitely some issue with the sign recognition software. This issue occurs in the same location on these freeways so it is repeatable. Reported to the dealer but they can't find an issue and have never heard of this. I am reporting this in case other vehicles could be affected as it could be very dangerous in heavy traffic to abruptly slow down that dramatically.

Saw on the internet (Lincolnforum.org) that disconnecting the battery and reconnect the entire system will return to normal. Tried this with the tech from AAA and it worked. 2 hours on the road after the incident stopped for gas and shut off the car and when I tried to start the car the whole incident was back. There are no dash lights signaling issues. I have reported the problem to the dealer where I purchased the car a couple of months ago (Tim Short Ford of Lafollette); my local dealership (Rusty Wallace Ford Lincoln of Morristown), which also reported that there were two other vehicles currently in the service department for the same issue; and to the Lincoln Concierge. I found many reports online of similar issues with this vehicle and with the confirmed two other vehicles with the same issue at my local dealership, this appears to be a widespread problem. However, after speaking with the Concierge, it is apparent that the company is not acknowledging the issue as no accommodation was offered despite the known similar failures in the same model line.

This luxury car has seat three seat memory positions: When you press the button the seat should go back to the computer-stored position (For the seat and steering wheel). The computer-stored position does not remember the position resulting in one getting jammed against the steering wheel and jamming ones feet into the peddles. While the seat memory recall feature is intended to be disabled unless stopped, the feature can be activated when moving slowly, like when approaching a stop at a stop sign or the garage door. The combination of the defect in the computer-stored position and being able to activate the feature while moving slowly has almost led to me not being able to press the brake or jam the gas pedal. This problem also existed in the 2020 model Corsair and I presume the 2021 model Corsair. The central fix should be Lincoln fixes the seat (steering wheel too) memory recall feature.

My 2021 Lincoln Corsair has 20,691 miles on it. At a dealer visit on June 9, 2025 for an oil change and routine maintenance I was told by the dealer that the rear brakes needed replacement. A friend of mine with a 2022 Corsair with 18000 miles on it has the same issue with rear brakes being worn out. This appears to be a common issue with late model Escapes, Corsairs, and Ford Edges. Rear brakes should never wear out in 20K miles unless the calipers are sticking which is what is happening. This appears to be a safety issue as the rear brakes could fail at any time with these low mileage vehicles.

While driving with cruise control set, an pre-collision assist not available warning showed on the dashboard. Cruise control automatically switched off and the immediately slowed even when pressing the gas pedal. The vehicle began to jerk as if the brakes were automatically activated. When able to safely pull over and stop the vehicle, it would not go into park nor would it turn off. The vehicle would only turn off and start when the emergency parking brake had been applied. After inspection at a certified dealership and maintenance shop, the vehicle was diagnosed with major transmission malfunction. The transmission fluid had been completely burned out and metal shavings were present. I asked how could this happen, especially when the necessary maintenance service checks and procedures were in order. The technician said he didn't know. I checked the manufacturer's recall listing and there is a recall on the transmission but that particular recall did not affect my particular VIN. Now the manufacturer refuses to discuss this issue with me, stating that due to proprietary reasons they could not offer me any further assistance or information. Total repair cost = $10,675.67 $4000.00 has been offered as part of the Ford goodwill program. On the transmission the endcap was missing a bolt that caused the transmission to leak that caused the transmission to fail. 2022 Corsair

My 2022 Lincoln Corsair has an open NHTSA recall (25V789 / Ford 25SC4) for a high-voltage battery cell internal short circuit that can cause sudden loss of motive power. There is currently NO remedy available. Before this recall was issued, my vehicle already lost power while I was driving on the highway, creating an immediate crash risk. This confirms the defect is active in my vehicle. In addition to the recall, the vehicle has experienced multiple major failures including: a long block engine replacement, HV battery program involvement, electrical system issues, axle/drivetrain repairs, and multiple CSP campaigns. These failures show a repeated pattern of serious defects. Lincoln Customer Relations and my dealership have stated they “cannot do anything” because there is no remedy, and told me I must continue driving the vehicle despite the documented highway shutdown. I am extremely concerned for my safety because the recall states that loss of power increases the risk of a crash, and I have already experienced this. I am filing this complaint because the vehicle is unsafe to operate, has an active safety defect with no available repair, and I have not been offered a safe resolution by Lincoln. I am requesting NHTSA review and investigation. VIN: [XXX] Mileage: ~57,200 INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The seat belts in my vehicle takes two to three times to click and stay, the back seat belt on the passenger side was stuck and could not be worn for about a month after the vehicle was driven from Odessa, Tx to me in Memphis, TN on July 1, 2022. The head rest on the passenger side will not adjust at all. It is still stuck forward and is hard to rest my head against it. The Advanced Driver Assistance Systems has stopped working since I got the truck, the steering wheel use to put the vehicle back in my lane but it does not do that anymore. I'm not sure what the difference is between the lane departure warning and the lane keeping assistance but it seems neither one works. Last, but not least the vehicle has a smell coming from it like something is burning under the hood. This vehicle already has two recalls and I called the dealership in Memphis, TN and spoke with Allison and she told me the parts for these recalls were not in and that I really did not have to get them fixed!!!!! I live in Southaven, Mississippi and have been trying to get rid of this vehicle since February because it is not worth the money and I am having a very hard time getting a decent offer for it so I won't be so much upside down on the next vehicle I choose. This is my first Lincoln and my last!!!! Oh and not to mention, the first recall was December 2022 and I received the mail regarding the recall February 12th or later. One more thing I need to mention, the driver seat hurts to sit in, it's like the seat digs into your thighs. There is lumbar support for your back in the front seats but it feels like seat cushion have an issue with being too hard.

Prior issue 11497970 reported on 12/19/2022. Car stopped without warning in traffic on November 30 and would not start or switch gears to neutral. Towed to Hines Park Lincoln and spent 16 days in the repair shop. It was returned to me on December 15. On December 20, I started the car to drive it for a first test drive around the block. It traveled 2 houses and stopped. After several tries, I got it started and made it to the front of my driveway (blocking the entrance). The car was totally dead. The first tow truck driver could not get it on the flatbed as the wheels were locked. The second truck had rollers to move the car onto the flatbed. My wife will not ride in the car as she does not feel safe. Obviously, if the car stops suddenly on a busy highway or expressway, or any road, it will likely end up in a rearend collision of at least 2 cars. It has a dangerous, safety issue. We don't want the car anymore. Can you do anything to help us?

This 2021 Lincoln Corsair is equipped with Auto Start/Stop technology. Auto Start/Stop Technology automatically shuts off the engine when the vehicle comes to a full stop and idles for more than a few seconds. Once the driver puts pressure on the accelerator, then the engine turns back on. It's simple, and some say it can save between 3-5% of gas in stop-and-go traffic. My car while stopped with the engine off, at a red light for example, after approximately 45 seconds, it will re-start itself and lunge forward. It does it every time, when you are stopped over 45 seconds and the engine is off. ( In Auto start/stop mode). Lincoln Dealership has verified this problem by driving the car and confirming the problem, but does not know what is causing the engine to re-start itself. If your foot is not on the brake, the car will lunge forward and strike what ever is in front of the vehicle. If Auto Hold Technology is on, the vehicle will still lunge but will not move forward. This vehicle was first purchased on December 11, 2021 and as this date 07/08/2022 is still lunging forward when in Auto Start/Stop mode. Vehicle had about 18 miles on it when purchased. Currently it has approximately 3,400 miles.

Went to unlock vehicle but found it was unlocked. Tried to start car and noticed there was nothing in the car that worked, interior lights, dashboard monitors, all computer functions were out and could not open the rear hatch. Called Lincoln assist and they sent AAA. They tested battery and it was good, tried a jump start and nothing happened. Again had to disconnect battery and reconnect and it returned to normal. Please find out what is causing this before it shuts down while driving???

This issue is consistent with complaints reported by other owners, as well. Nothing has been address by Ford Lincoln to address this unsafe issue. This is a serious safety risk. There is no recall or TSB to date. Invoice is 6500 to repair. This same issue is being reported by many according to a Lincoln fb group and a search on the internet, as well. I have reported the issue to their Customer Service line and to the Lincoln app. I am requesting that this issue be investigated for manufacturer action with complete and all dollar reimbursements, including tow charges. The water drips on the driver seat and the steering wheel and has caused discoloration to the driver seat. This water leak distracted me while driving due to sudden water leak, it is not safe as it could cause accident.

The hands free sensor on the liftgate will randomly allow the door to open with the key as far as 20 feet or more from the vehicle. The liftgate opened on its own from the motion of a garage door, becoming entangled with the garage door and damaging the door. The door has opened on its own at least twelve times without a person standing directly in front of the rear bumper making a kicking motion. Ford has failed to provide any technical specifications for the door, including the acceptable distance at which the key must be from the vehicle for motion to activate the door and the distance at which motion must occur. As a result the vehicle cannot be safely stored in a garage. The vehicle poses a safety hazard of striking a passerby who may walk behind it when the key is nearby, and has opened at least three times in such a manner. Ford basically states if the door opens at all then it is working and they do not have any specifications for door operation that they can test against. Can a Lincoln Corsair tow? Towing & payload

As an SUV, the Lincoln Corsair is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package.

What sets your Corsair's tow & payload rating:

  • Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
  • Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
  • Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
  • Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.

Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
