How to read a Mercedes-Benz E-Class VIN — every digit explained
Every Mercedes-Benz E-Class carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this E-Class.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your E-Class VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 mercedes benz e320. The contact stated that the driver of the vehicle was traveling approximately 40 mph when another vehicle crashed into the rear passenger's side of the vehicle. The vehicle immediately became engulfed in flames. The driver was fatally injured with trauma to the head. The passenger was fatally injured with trauma to the torso and the two rear passengers died from smoke inhalation. The police were on scene and a report was filed. The contact stated that the fuel system may have been the cause of the fire that erupted upon impact. The cause of the fire was not determined. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000. *tr
When 2005 e320 has gas tank filled, there is an overwhelming fuel odor in the passenger compartment and outside the vehicle. The fumes dissipate when the fuel level decreases from full to 3/4. Car was taken to mercedes dealer for service and this problem was listed for the repair person. They found no problem. Year and a half later, i again asked mercedes dealer to look at this issue. They said it was a leak in the fuel sending unit which is connected into the top of the gas tank. At a cost of $800, the fuel sending unit was replaced. I picked up the vehicle and the fuel smell inside the car was so strong it made me and two clients nauseous with severe headaches the following day. I returned the car to the dealer, and upon further inspection, they now tell me the fuel sending unit was leaking but the gas tank itself also is cracked and leaking which needs to be replaced for another $2,000. I opened a complaint with mercedes benz usa. After their sham of an investigation, they said they would offer me a 50% discount on the fuel tank replacement or assistance on the purchase of a new vehicle. The car now has 118,000 miles and is out of warranty. I have no choice but to make the repairs. You should not have to replace a gas tank on a vehicle of any age, and i am afraid of continued safety problems from poor engineering design with the replacement parts if the car is involved in any accident. *tr
I parked the vehicle in a parking lot. I walked away and it immediately started smoking. Shortly after that, flames appeared coming from the hood. Shortly after that, the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames.
A Summary of the May 9, 2021, event follows: 6:30 a.m: I Woke up, put on gym clothes and shoes and drove to gym (1 mile from home). 7:01:40 a.m. Turned into the gym parking lot and slowly inched into a parking space. (my Mercedes rides low in the front so I pull in slowly so the block will not scrape my bumper). 7:02:00 a.m. As I pull slowly into the parking space the car stalls and the engine begins revving very loud. I firmly press my right foot (foot was already on the brake as I was inching into the space) on the brake because the car is still making that revving sound. 7:02:15 a.m. The car is at a complete stop for some time. The engine begins revving even louder and surges forward (foot was still on the brake) four feet. The car hits the brick gym building and comes to a standstill. I turn off the engine and sit there stunned. ( A witness signed a statement and said "car was at a complete stop for some time...thought driver would open her door and get out but then the car suddenly surged forward and hit the building"). After getting out of my car and inspecting the wrecked car, I notice the gas cap is open and I shut it. The police show up, and say "no police report" will be made. I have some injuries (concussion, bruises over full torso and legs) but I treat patients with TBIs so self-diagnosed and treated my injuries without seeking additional medical attention. On May 9, 2021, I call CSAA and report the accident. After several conversations with CSAA Claims Advisor Karl Arnold, it appears the car frame is damaged, and repair costs exceed value of car. The building had no damage. I then attempted to access relevant data on the EDR and was misled by the Mercedes Fairfield dealership, Service Unit. I was told by Josh “the data is irretrievable, and you can’t get it”. I asked why would Congress pass the EDR in to law making EDRs mandatory and data belongs to owner, if it is not retrievable? He had no answer. [xxx] PARTS OF THIS DOCUMENT HAVE BEEN REDACTED TO PROTECT PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *cc
At approximately 11:50 a.m. On tuesday, february 11, 2020, i pulled out of our driveway onto spruce dr. Nw, going south and the car immediately started accelerating on its own, careening down spruce dr. Nw. I was desperately trying to miss parked cars on the street but my car was moving faster and faster, out of control through the intersection at the end of my block. Then my car was flying through the air, between 25-40 mph, slamming into a creek bank and ending on the driver side down a 30 foot ravine at the end of spruce drive nw. I was trapped inside the car with my seat belt on and according to the police report the side airbag had deployed. Thankfully, i did not hit any cars! It was truly a miracle that i was alive and that my neighbors heard and saw the crash. Within five minutes the metropolitan police department who were stationed at the mayor's house around the corner arrived and with my neighbors were able to pull me from the wreckage through the sunroof. Apparently the glass sunroof had popped open/off during the crash. The crash happened about 11:53 a.m. Shortly thereafter, i was taken by ambulance to a trauma center in a local hospital. Fortunately i only had minor bruises but the trauma center staff gave me a thorough check-up. And no one else was involved in the crash.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 mercedes benz e350. The contact stated that after refueling, he could smell a strong gasoline smell inside and outside the cabin. The fumes were so strong that he and his children became violently ill. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the fuel pump and fuel line would need to be replaced due to a leak. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 110,000.

I drove in and parked behind a child care center. I was stopped and suddenly the car lurched forward crashing through a wood fence and was only stopped by some playground equipment. Breaking did not stop it.
For a couple of months when i put my 2014 e350 sport in park it would jerk forward. Never really thought about it being a problem. I was driving my car into my neighbors driveway and went to turn around and just as i went to put the car in reverse, the car propelled forward directly into her tree. If the tree had not been there my car would have went into the front of her house. I am thankful that i am just shaken up and a little sore. I am also thankful that i was the only one in the car during this freak event and that if happened where it did because the 2 other times that i was in my car that day is was in heavy traffic and i would have done major damage to myself and possibly someone else. At first i believe my shoe got caught on the accelerator, but there is no possible way this could be the issue as i was applying it to the brake when the car propelled forward. For as hard as i hit the tree the airbag did not deploy. I was able to drive my car back home with all the coolant leaking from it. *tr

2007 mercedes benz e350 noticed strong fuel/gas odor inside car after filling up gas tank and would subside after gas tank was approximately 3/4. My children & i had to roll down the windows while driving due to feeling nausea. This has occurred often for weeks. Last thursday on 8/7/14 i was driving vehicle coming to a signal light at an intersection and the car started shaking like is was loosing power, then it shut off in the middle of the street at the intersection. I tried starting it back up and it would not start at all after cranking for few seconds looking like it was not getting fuel at all. I had to get my car towed, the mechanic said it was the fuel pump and it will cost $2000 to replace. This seemed extremely hazardous for car safety having to smell the fumes and almost causing an accident. There have been an enormous amount of complaints regarding the fuel emission pump/tank & this manufacture defect of the car which is a major road safety hazard item should be considered as a safety recall from mercedes car company. *tr
While driving home i smelt smoke. I stopped the car to investigate the smell of smoke that was overpowering the now normal scent of gas which filled my vehicle cabin due to a fuel pump leak. When i exited my vehicle i opened up the drivers side rear passenger door to find smoke emitting from that area. I quickly left the immediate vicinity of the smoldering car and when i turned to look back, i saw flames under my car. I proceeded towards the overpass while moving away from the vehicle attempting to find cellular phone signal, i saw my car now being engulfed in flames. Re: (odi number) is: 10628900. *tr

Most of the enclosed questions do not apply. The reason is that about a year ago we started smelling "gas" fumes in our garage from our car. My daughter's bedroom is above the garage. We asked the dealership to look into it and they said they did not see a problem. We started parking our car in the garage again and my daughter started getting sick she said from the gas fumes. It is now very apparent that this mercedes e550 is leaking fumes from the gas tank. This is very dangerous both from an explosive component and from a day to day health/safety issue because many bedrooms are above the garage like with my family. This needs to be looked at asap from nhtsa before someone dies. *tr
This is the second occurrence. Dealer replaced engine once. I reported the first incident on confirmation number (odi number) is: 10507237. This second incident occurred on or about 13 july 2013, car started having illuminating odor in the cabin again that resembled fuel. Garage and car odor was so bad it actually entered my home and i had to leave the garage door open to ventilate. Went on line and found other owners exhibiting exact defect. Took vehicle to mercedes dealer and was informed that a leak from the fuel tank was the cause again and it was not from damage but from the sending unit and lines. After reading the warranty and contacting mercedes directly, i contacted the dealer and informed them that it is a covered item and they should make the repair as a warrantied item. I am making this complaint because i believe that the replacement unit will be the same oem part that has not been modified to solve this failure from duplicating later. *tr
Very strong, lasting, gas odor inside and outside the car. I searched forum of mbworld.org and found many similar complaints. The cause could be a leaking fuel lever sender due to broken seal. I removed the rear seat and found a puddle of gas on top of the tank. The dealer i called told me there was no recall on this matter and i world have to pay $160 for diagnostic even this is emission related safety issue. *tr

The driver of the mercedes was traveling east on interstate 80 in a rural area of california. The driver claims to have fallen asleep while driving the vehicle and allowed the vehicle to leave the south side of the freeway while traversing a left curve in the roadway. The vehicle launched off a slight downhill embankment south of the roadway and the vehicle traversed an undulated vegetative area prior to striking a large diameter tree with the front of the vehicle. The impact was right of the center of the front of the vehicle. The driver and front passenger were wearing their type-2 safety belts. After striking the tree, the vehicle overturned onto its left side and came to rest on its roof. The driver front and side-curtain airbags deployed as did the front passenger side-curtain airbag. The front passenger front airbag did not deploy. Both occupants sustained major injuries as a result of the collision. The investigating chp officer observed that the front passenger front airbag did not deploy and requested an evaluation of the system due to a perceived potential srs system failure. Chp multidisciplinary accident investigation team (mait) evaluated the system (see included mait investigation). *tr
Driving on the freeway, 61 mph, start raining hard, pouring, car slipped, turned and hit the wall on the side of the freeway heads on straight. Got hit by another car on the side, after couple of turns, it stopped on the middle of the freeway. Couple of side air bags deployed, the most important ones, the front air bags, driver and passenger side did not deployed. *tr
On 12/6/07 my family was involved in a head on collision that caused both front airbags to deploy. My concern is regarding the passenger airbag that should not have deployed according to the dashboard console. When my 7 year old daughter is in the passenger seat the ?passenger air bag off? Light stayed on and this was the only reason we let her ride in the front passenger seat. Unfortunately in this accident the airbag deployed which caused minor head injuries. I contacted mercedes benz of sacramento to look into this and they indicated that if the light indicated the airbag was off, the airbag should not have deployed. They also indicated that the airbag should not have deployed if the passenger weighed less than 60 lbs. In this situation the passenger weighed approximately 50 lbs. I asked mercedes benz to check the vehicle for defects, but i was told that they did not have equipment to check the car in the field. I would have to bring the car into the dealership to be checked. Unfortunately the vehicle is no longer drivable and was considered a total loss by my insurance company so i am no longer the legal owner. To avoid this situation from happening to any other unsuspecting family, i need to know if we were doing something wrong or if there is a manufacturer?s defect that needs to be addressed. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2003 mercedes benz e500. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 25 mph, the brake pedal was applied but did not respond. The contact applied extreme force to the brake pedal, the vehicle spun around and crashed into a tree. The contact sustained whiplash and pains to the wrists due to the force from the impact that did not require medical attention. In addition, the head restraint air bags deployed on the drivers side and the front passenger side only. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed back to the contacts residence and the vehicle was not diagnosed yet to determine how the failure happened. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was not available.
Deployed airbags injure 2 pa. Firefighters dave sommers, staff writer april 24, 2003 edgely, pa. Firefighters face a lot of hazards every time they suit up. But they don't expect to be struck by automobile airbags such as what occurred on tuesday when edgely fire company firefighters responded to a car fire in the 3m industrial park in bristol township. In fact, officials said andy taggart, 25, was knocked out when the driver-side airbag on a 2002 mercedes benz inexplicably deployed as the veteran firefighter was checking the dash for damage. A second firefighter, ryan flanagan, 18, was slightly injured when he was struck in the head by a partially deploying airbag as he was checking the right side of the front dash, officials said. Both were rushed to st. Mary medical center in langhorne where they were kept for observation and then released early yesterday. Flanagan said edgely responded to the fire scene around 9:38 p.m. After learning that a 2002 mercedes benz was on fire in front of a&z automotive on manning boulevard. When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke coming from under the dash and began to get the situation under control. The driver side airbag blew with such force it knocked taggart unconscious while the passenger side bag, which only partially deployed, struck a glancing blow off the side of ryan flanagan's head. Both firefighters were wearing helmets, which likely saved them from further injury. Aerostar, the security company which electronically monitors luxury cars such as the mercedes, had automatically called 911 when it detected a fire under the dashboard. The aerostar system also automatically unlocked the cars doors and contacted the owner, who was not with the vehicle at the time. The fire inside the mercedes was extinguished before it could cause much damage. *nlm
While traveling at highway speeds with adaptive cruise control safety systems engaged, the vehicle failed to detect a hazard immediately ahead in its lane. The Forward Collision Warning failed to alert the driver, and the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) failed to initiate automated emergency deceleration. Manual emergency braking was attempted by the driver in the final milliseconds, but the vehicle's braking system failed to sufficiently decelerate the vehicle, resulting in a high-energy frontal collision. Despite severe structural deformation concentrated entirely on the front fascia and crumple zones, the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) completely failed and no airbags deployed. The driver sustained injuries to the neck, back, and ribs. The vehicle has been declared a total loss by insurance and is available for inspection at a salvage facility. The manufacturer was notified over a month ago (Case #21986205) but has failed to pull the Event Data Recorder (EDR) telemetry or provide an engineering review timeline. No prior warning lamps or system malfunction messages were present before the incident.

The contact owned a 2017 Mercedes-Benz E300W. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 MPH he was side swiped on the drivers side door by another vehicle causing his vehicle to jump the curb. The contact stated he had a brake malfunction and had to depress the brake pedal to the floorboard. The contact had to steer the vehicle into a fence in order to come to a stop. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The police were called and filed a police report. The contact had the vehicle towed to a collision center. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact's insurance company declared the vehicle a total loss. The contact suffered injuries to his back, both knees and his head from hitting the steering wheel, but did not seek medical attention until later. The airbags did not deploy. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 21,000.
I was driving my husband's 2016 E350 at 45 mph when the car accelerated. I attempted to control the speed by braking but the brake did not respond well. The steering wheel was also loose. The car sped up and turned left to the opposite side of the road, crossed the two lanes and hit the fence followed by a tree. The car was totaled, and the tree broke down at its branches. I survived the crush with two fractures on my back and on my left thumb.
My vehicle was moving thru intersection when another vehicle ran a red light. I hit the brakes, but still crashed into side of other vehicle at 20-25 mph. My vehicle had front end damage and was a total loss. I was wearing a seat belt, but it did not hold me to the seat. I hit the steering wheel with my chest and had to go to hospital for x-rays. Also, the steering wheel air bag did not deploy. The dealer said i was not going fast enough to deploy air bag. That is not true. *tr

The contact owned a 2012 Mercedes-Benz E550. The contact stated while her husband was driving 20-25 MPH and making a right turn, the brake pedal was depressed but traveled down to the floorboard, and the vehicle failed to respond. The contact's husband stood on the brake pedal; however, the vehicle failed to respond and crashed into a small ditch. The contact was occupying the front passenger's side seat at the time of the incident. The contact was unsure whether there was a warning light illuminated. The air bags deployed. The contact stated that there was smoke coming from the air bags. Both the contact and her husband immediately exited the vehicle. The contact's husband did not sustain any injuries. The contact stated that her left arm was deformed. The contact was transported to the Hospital by a family member. The Doctor diagnosed that the contact had sustained two broken bones on the left arm and two broken bones on the left foot. The contact underwent surgery and was scheduled for physical therapy. The contact was unsure whether a police report was filed. The vehicle was towed and totaled by the insurance company. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that a field inspector would be sent to inspect the vehicle. The failure mileage was unknown.
I was driving home from work at approximately 1:30 pm on a clear, sunny day, about a minute away from my home. The road conditions were good, and there was no traffic. I stopped at the corner to make a left turn. As i proceeded to turn, the car suddenly accelerated. I immediately applied the brakes, but they did not engage. I had no control of the car. It jumped the curb ( caught on property owner's camera, going air born) , as i continued to brake as hard as i could with the car increasingly accelerating.i crashed through a fence and hit a pole which stopped the car deploying both driver side airbags. There was severe damage to the front right side of the car, and it was totaled. I was taken to the hospital via ambulance.my injury was diagnosed as acute l1 compression fracture along the superior endplate with mild anterior wedging. I was referred to an orthopedic specialist and have not returned to work due to pain and elevated blood pressure. To make matters worse, two days later i was issued a warning for failure to control speed!@&!
I was coming out of the parking garage. I proceeded to the entrance to garage. The street was narrow for two cars to pass by. I made a right turn from the garage exit to the narrow street with 5 mph speed. There were two cars about 25 feet away already on that street. Those two cars were waiting to make a left or right turn on main street at the t junction. Suddenly my car accelerated to 45 mph approximately. I applied the brake but the brake did not even slow down the car. With the brake not working and the car accelerating very fast, the car became out of control. I was approaching the cars in front of me. In order to avoid hitting the cars in front of me, i steered my car to the left of these two cars. I went fast beyond these two cars and came on the main road. I noticed a car was coming close from the right side which would have hit my car. At the same time, i noticed that on the lane on left side there was no car in close vicinity. To protect other cars hitting my car, i steered my car to the left lane and drove my car over the curb. The car went over the curb and hit a street electric pole. The curb and the pole stopped the car. The middle section of the front of my car hit the pole. The impact of sudden stop destroyed the front middle part of the car and also shattered the glass windshield. The air bag did not deploy. Upon my insisting, mercedes benz checked the car for sudden acceleration and brake failure. They told us that nothing was malfunctioning in my car. I do not trust them: so i seek your help in this investigation for sudden acceleration and brake failure as they did not find the cause of car malfunctioning. I was taken to emergency for treatment in an ambulance. I missed several days from office. I am still physically hurting on neck/shoulders and continue to take prescription pain killers; but lucky to be living. *tr

I parked the vehicle in a parking lot. I walked away and it immediately started smoking. Shortly after that, flames appeared coming from the hood. Shortly after that, the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames.
There have been three events, all the same. Each time a speaker in a door, while driving, has began to squeal, sputter and the smoke. The first occurred while sitting inside a car wash, with the windows up, obviously. I was able to open the window, drenching myself, but venting the acrid electrical smoke. The second was while driving home from a medical clinic. The third was while driving on the interstate, traveling from my mothers funeral in California to Wisconsin It was 2am, just outside of Vail, Colorado in the rain. My wife was driving, while I slept. I woke to her screaming that the car was on fire, she pulled over, taking advantage of the antilock brakes for the first time ever, striking some type of curb, ultimately not killing us, but we lost another speaker, and a tire and rim. I’m, needless to say, displeased with my expensive European wagon, but Mercedes’ does not consider melting and smoking speakers to be a safety issue. Look online, and you’ll see plenty of videos of people with the same issue.
I backed the car out of the garage at my condominium building in sarasota and placed the car in park to remove something from the windshield (i believed the car was in park -- but it could have failed to engage it or i possibly nicked it on my way out of the car). I started to move out of the car, while my right foot was on the brake -- about 90% of my body weight was out of the car and then i took my right foot off the brake. The car started to move backwards and i was sandwiched between the left front door of the car and the car itself -- i dove to the ground to avoid being hit by the door, injuring my left side -- and then i rolled on to my back to avoid the door and then saw the left front wheel heading for both legs -- i tucked and dragged my body away -- the car passed by, missing my two legs by only an inch or two. The car crashed in to the fence of my condominium building. After talking with mercedes benz usa, i learned that the car did not have an automatic park feature -- but if i had purchased a keyless go feature, the electronic transmission would have had a feature that would have caused the transmission to go in to park as soon as the standing vehicle door was cracked. No one at my dealer and no one at mbusa service knew that this feature was available -- and then only if the buyer had purchased keyless go. This feature should be on all electronic transmissions from mb -- at a minimum, dealers and prospective customers should have been made aware of this missing safety item and its availability as an extra. Mbusa has told me that this feature cannot be added to my car -- it is only available at the plant of manufacture. *tr
My wife was driving when she smelled something burning and then felt something burning, she pulled over and jumped out to check and found the seat warmer had malfunctioned and burned through the back portion of the seat. Her shirt had a slight burn to it and smoke covered interior of the car. The hole in the seat is about the size of a cigarette burn but deeper. She took it to the import repair shop who disconnected the power source wire to the seat heater for safety. *tr
At the time of the incident, I was pulling into a parking space in a parking lot near a park. I was traveling at approximately 3-5 miles per hour, consistent with idle or walking speed during a routine parking maneuver. I was nearly stopped and aligned with the parking space when the vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly accelerated without driver input. This occurred from a near-idle speed in a parking lot, not during roadway driving. During the unintended acceleration, the vehicle traveled over multiple curbs on both sides. No audible warnings, no beeping, no proximity alerts, no forward-collision warnings, and no automatic emergency braking activated at any time, despite the vehicle crossing curbs and approaching fixed objects. No warning lights illuminated. The vehicle continued accelerating without driver input and struck and knocked down a fixed light pole. After the impact, the vehicle continued moving forward until I immediately slammed on the brake and brought it to a stop in the middle of the adjacent roadway. No orange cones or warning devices were present prior to the incident. Any cones visible in photos were placed after the collision by responders for safety and traffic control. The sudden acceleration and complete lack of safety-system response occurred during a low-speed parking maneuver where the vehicle should not have accelerated beyond idle speed.
On [XXX] at [XXX], while I was slowly moving my car into a parking spot, the vehicle suddenly stopped for a brief moment and then, within a second, unexpectedly accelerated forward without any input from me. The car jumped onto the pathway and collided with the glass door of the property located at [XXX] ". I attempted to control the car using the brakes immediately, but the vehicle was not responding and remained out of control. There were no alert sounds or warnings before or during the incident. The vehicle finally stopped only after hitting the glass door. I strongly believe this was caused by a software or system bug, as the sudden acceleration occurred without my intervention. Please investigate this issue thoroughly, as it raises serious safety concerns. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

552(B)(6). *cc

On 11/24/23 Mercedes Benz had replaced my subframe which was part of a safety recall. When I arrived home after picking up my vehicle, there was a loud bang from under the vehicle. I immediately called the service department and told them about what happened and also complained that the steering wheel was cocked to the left and pulling in that direction. My service advisor John advised me to bring it back the next day which I did. They never told me what caused the loud bang, but they did say another front end alignment was done. The vehicle still continued to pull and the steering wheel was still off center. On [XXX] I took my car to Mr. Tire for a tire rotation because the car continued to sway and jolt when going over bumps. It also made a popping noise when making a sharp turn. Then on [XXX] as I was driving, the car pulled or slid to the left. In order to keep from crashing into another vehicle, I pulled the wheel right causing me to run over the medium and almost crashing into a building. I was extremely shook up and in disbelief. Has this type of thing ever happened to anyone else before after the subframe was replaced? INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Suspension issues, i just placed 4 new tires on my car in june of 2018. On dec 28, 2019 my car felt as if someone was unscrewing all of my wheels off and i spent out losing control of the vehicle. I am unable to get mercedes-benz usa to share ground clearance specification for my vehicle. My car has 100.000 miles. Mbusa directed me to the local dealer but the dealer couldn't find the spec. I was told i would receive a call back and never did. I googled info regarding my issues and saw this site and was like wow. It was raining and i was doing 60 miles nothing more.
Problem #1). The interior driver and passenger door handles have a chrome tape of some type that covers the handles. This tape overtime comes off on the inside and it is extremely sharp like a razor. I cut my finger twice on the driver-side and a passenger got cut on the passenger side a year later. I contacted mercedes about this and they wouldn't do or offer anything. Problem #2). The driver and passenger sun visors overtime get very very stiff and will not go back all the way up. My wife can not even move them at all. I also verbally reported these problems to penske mercedes in west covina, ca to my service writer and he stated "yes we are aware as it is a common problem however there is no recall on those items". He wanted to charge me $275 for each sun visor to be replaced and that did not include labor to install them. Problem #3). Lower ball joints go out quite frequently and is also a "known common problem". *tr
Have purchased a 2014 mercedes E350 59k miles. This vehicle has an issue as so do many Mercedes with their rear subframes rotted out at the control arm bracket which causes the rear link/thrust arm to detach from the subframe/axle carrier and posses a danger when breaking due to the rear spindle assembly flexing throwing the wheels out of alignment and could be at risk for a car crack. This vehicle has already been in a minor crash as a result of this issue. I personally have not brought it to Mercedes to get it diagnosed inspected or the police law enforcement but there are many cases online on the Mercedes Benz forums to which this has also happened to. This issue applies to other Mercedes models ranging from 2010 all the way to 2016. Videos of the exact vehicle brought to an independent shop available upon request.
My vehicle was pulling in the rear when braking. My mechanic informed me that it was a rotted undercarriage. When I called Mercedes they informed me that there is a problem with many models of Mercedes with this. They told me there is a warranty to cover it. This is a very dangerous condition. There should be a recall on all impacted vehicles. This safety failure and lack of transparency by the company (reportedly known for years) puts owners and motorists at risk. Please investigate. To make matters worse, the Dealers are unresponsive and slow to provide service and help. One dealership, Mercedes in New London CT has ignored my repeated phone calls and emails trying to clarify and schedule service. I went to another dealership Mercedes in Warwick RI. They have been more responsive with confirming the issue--but there are delays in getting the vehicle fixed--and no provision of loaner vehicles requiring the renting of vehicles during this time frame. Please investigate and require a recall.
Airmatic front air strut/shock failure. The front left has failed on my car. It happened while driving and a short while after an accident and the two may be related due to the braking forces putting pressure on the front struts. The failure did not happen immediately after the crash. However, about a month later, or so, the car lowered and red warning light came on with a warning to to "pull over and stop driving immediately". I was driving normally, but i had the accident in late june. Also, in addition the the temporal occurrence of my accident, the struts appear defective judging by complaints on mercedes forums. This is a safety issue because the car lowers, the suspension hits bottom and the tires rub on the fenders making steering impossible.
I was driving on the turnpike and thank god no other cars were next to me. Sometimes when i go over 50 the car tends to pull in another direction. I took it to get service a week after i bought it and got my car back 6months later. Than the accident happened. They just replaced computer chip they said. The car has never driven right since i bought it. So when the car decided to pull to the left i was pulling with all my strength to just keep the wheel straight but i had no control and spun around 5 times n landed backwards on the turnpike facing on coming traffic. I'm so upset that i never got to enjoy the vehicle it still pulls and the dealership always says its fine. The car rattles. One day i was driving n the seat i was sitting on blew up for no reason. They replace only the inside parts and never the stitching on the seat so i have a ripped seat for something that was not my fault . This call is def a lemon or should be recalled. *tr
Air suspension lower caused car stopped while driving. This air suspension has serious problem needs recall due to defective design. Springs have been replaced several times with the same problem. This problem will cause accidents while driving.
I’ve been hearing a creaking noise in the rear when coming to a stop. Independent mechanic inspected it and said the subframe was severely rusted and that I probably should not drive long distances until it is fixed. They researched and said others have had similar issue. Mercedes apparently is aware and offers an “extended warranty.” I have an appointment in two weeks (!) to have it looked at by a Mercedes mechanic. They will pay for the repair/replacement IF warranted. Should be a recall, IMO. Can’t imagine that the part in question, which according to my mechanic, “essentially holds the back of the car together” wouldn’t be an immediate recall. Car has 120k miles on it.
