I have a 2019 Subaru Ascent Limited model with 96,xxx miles as of January 2025. In 2023, there was a safety recall for the PTC heater ground bolt sent first class mail for multiple year Ascent models. This recall was completed by local subaru dealership on 3/27/2023 stating "WRL 22 completed. Removed ground bolts and cleaned threads. Found no signs of heat damage. Removed and replaced bolts." Move forward to Saturday, [XXX]. I remote started vehicle from inside the house while on vacation in Bristol Tennesee. Car was running for roughly 5 minutes, when fire alarms inside the house starting going off. Seemed odd considering nothing was going on inside. Walked inside to see large amounts of white smoke coming from the windows of the Ascent. I was able to jump into the car and turn the engine off. I opened all 4 doors to let the car air out. I checked the engine, nothing seemed off. I then turned my attention to the air cabin filter, everything seemed normal as well. After the engine cooled and aired out, there is smoke damage to the vehicle. I was able to transport the car safely to Wallace Subaru which was less than 0.25 mile from our airbnb. I was quickly notified by the service technician that the car is not safe to drive until it was fixed. After further investigation, it was found that the PTC ground bolt has failed again, and this time melting the wiring harness and bolt around it. This was right next to the carpet and put my life as well as my wife, who is [XXX] and my [XXX] daughter. Thankfully we weren't in the vehicle when this occurred. There was no warning. No check engine light, nothing. No other issues leading into the incident. Car is still parked in Bristol TN at the dealership and I am 5 hours away in Lexington KY. Subaru has been uncooperative with this situation and is avoiding talking to me or making this situation better. I literally have no answers. We have had to replace battery twice and had to have auto club give us a jump start multiple times. We drive this vehicle once or twice a month, but something is causing battery to run down way to fast. Manufacturer claims we need to drive more often. I have always had one car, that burned to much fuel, and was used as an occasional vehicle, but never had this type of problem. Something needs to be provided so that battery does not leak power when it is a low use car. I don’t want the internal lights to turn on when I walk by, or for it to access the internet. I believe that this leaves us vulnerable to non-availability at a critical time. We are planning a multi-week trip and have no idea if car will start when we return. Nor is their a way to disconnect unneeded activity that is draining battery.

Car battery died in store parking lot. Low mileage (24,000). I do lots of short trips and this is a reported problem for 2019 Subaru Ascents. I had to wait 2 hours for someone to bring a charger to drive to auto parts store fire replacement battery.

Battery keeps dying.
Dec 16, 2023
Rear lift gate drains battery to the point where the vehicle won't start. The tailgate will beep three times, but will not open. Within 24 hours, the battery is insufficient to start it. You have to do a manual override to open the lift gate. The battery, starter and alternator were all tested and had no issues. I have to keep a jump pack in the car as the issue has become more frequent. The local Subaru dealership in Mequon, WI said they would replace the battery, but won't replace the module identified in a technical service bulletin for no charge: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10163522-0001.pdf This seems to be a very common problem with the MY19 Ascents.

Subaru windshild in my 2019 Ascent have been replaced twice in 30,000 miles due to very inadequate glass. I'm struggling to get Subaru to acknowledge their responsibility to replace this current cracked windshield with a new part, as per my reading of a settlement that they should be following [XXX] ). They are currently trying to send me to a 3rd party repair business to do the repair, but supposedly they have fixed the part on more recent versions of the car. By comparison, I had a Toyota Highlander for 11 years and never once had to replace the windshield glass. Yes, it took a beating, but never once cracked like this glass does. It's not up to the task, and clearly dangerous. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The windshield cracked with no obvious damage. The crack did not start at a chip. Cracked while not driving and no recent rock hits.

Yesterday I got in my vehicle first thing in the morning and there was a crack at the bottom of my windshield. I’m not parked anywhere near anything that could’ve caused a crack, so it appears to have just randomly cracked for no reason. This morning as I’m just sitting at the bus stop with my kid the crack got a little bigger.

Over the past few months the transmission has started randomly refusing to engage. When entering the expressway, you will press the accelerator, and the engine will rev and the vehicle will not accelerate at all. Then you let off the accelerator, let the engine RPM drop back down to idle, and press again and it will accelerate. This has happened 3 times in 2 months. Subaru is refusing to replace the transmission because their tech cannot personally reproduce the problem on demand, even though they have voluntarily extended the warranty on this model transmission due to slippage issues. They are instead going to change the transmission fluid, which has less than 1/2 the mileage for a typical fluid service, to mask the issue, risking the safety of passengers.
Dec 02, 2025
While driving on the highway, my vehicle suddenly lost the ability to accelerate—this is the second time this has happened, with the first incident occurring in June 2022. Each time I bring the car to the dealership, I’m told that because the issue cannot be recreated on the spot, despite codes that are warranted for the QMR to be done they’re unable to inspect or apply the WRK-21 procedure to replace the transmission under warranty. Despite this, my car consistently slips during normal driving conditions. It shudders and surges unpredictably while accelerating in traffic, creating an extremely unsafe situation. Most recently, I was driving with my children when the car failed to accelerate as I attempted to merge across four lanes of highway traffic. I had to coast until I could safely pull over. On other occasions, the vehicle has jolted forward unexpectedly, nearly causing collisions and forcing me to slam on the brakes. This issue is not only recurring—it is dangerous. I am requesting that it be taken seriously and addressed appropriately under warranty.

I purchased the car brand new in 2019. Shortly after purchasing, the transmission started having hesitation and slipping. I took the car back to the Subaru, and they replaced the transmission under warranty. Unfortunately, they replaced it with another full transmission, and very shortly there after, they had to replace it again. Unfortunately, they replaced it with another faulty transmission and now it is at 150,000 miles and needs another transmission. No one offered me to buy back my car with a second transmission replacement. I was told I was trying to scam a new transmission from Subaru. For this third transmission, I had it verified by an independent shop. I have placed a complaint with Subaru and ask them to buy back my vehicle and I have been told it’s unlikely to happen. I am worried about what will happen when the transmission goes out while I’m driving 70 miles an hour down the highway. This is a pattern in the warrants consumer protection. Many other car companies have stopped. Trying to make this CVT because it kept having problems..

When trying to maintain highway speeds (65 to 70 MPH) and driving in mountainous terrain of Pennsylvania, Maryland, or New York, the vehicle will shudder as if it is loosing power. The vehicle will rapidly loose speed. No warning code is issued. The only way to solve issue is depress the pedal to increase the RPMs. Took vehicle to dealer and reported that it felt as if the CVT chain was slipping. They said they could not recreate and there was no code.

All of a sudden my vehicle accelerated after placing it in reverse with my foot on the brake. There was a screeching sound and I immediately shifted into (at least) Park. In attempting to exit my garage again, it repeated the same events. I parked the car and never did leave my residence. No dash lights etc. I am afraid to now drive this vehicle. This occurred several days before this mentioned event, but responded OK the 2nd time. In May of 2025 I actually crashed into a car across the street from this happening. Others are definately at risk. This actually occured twice during my 1st year of ownership, but was overlooked until now. I intend to take it to my dealer and have my vehicle inspected. There were no warning lamps etc.

As a veteran and spouse of an active duty service member, we are currently fulfiling our overseas tour in South Korea. We were notified of the recall of our Subaru Ascent and made contact with Subaru via email for guidance on how to proceed as we are not within the continental United States. My email to them was as follows: Our family is currently stationed overseas in South Korea. Our family has been stationed here the past two years and will be completing an additional duty of two more years here in service of our country. I previously contacted Subaru addressing the concern of the Recall for our PTC Heater Ground Bolt which has been found to be unsafe and can lead to the vehicle catching on fire. It was disheartening to be told we could not be offered assistance as Subaru only services those in the U.S. Subaru prides itself as providing one of the safest vehicles for families on the market which is why we chose Subaru. What can be done to assist us? I look forward to hearing back soon.  Subaru responded with: Thank you for reaching out to Subaru of America. Regrettably Since we do not have a reciprocal agreement with Korea we would not be able to assist with the repairs until you return to the states. I do apologize as there would be no other loopholes that we will be able to provide to have the repair done. If fyou have any further questions, you can always give us a call back or email back in as well. Hope you have a good day ahead. We will not be able to ship our vehicle until all recalls have been fixed especially as this specific recall does come with a noted safety risk by Subaru and is as follows: This potential condition may result in the melting of the ground terminal and surrounding components when the PTC heater is in operation, increasing the risk of a fire. I am submitting a claim to acquire assistance as to how to proceed. -thank you.

My 2019 Subaru Ascent windshield cracked from no apparent reason while driving on freeway. There was a loud bang sound and there is a circular crack quite symmetrical in the middle of the windshield. The diameter of the circular crack was ~2 inches wide. There is no hairline fracture. In recollection, it didn't feel like there was any rock or particle that ricocheted off the windshield. It felt more like it cracked on its own.

The break pads had to be renewed after 2.5 months because the ABS was engaging every time I used the breaks. At all speeds. 84,000 miles

Front brakes squealing at low speed stops. This was confirmed at the dealership when pulling into the service department. And, severe vibration and shuttering in the steering wheel and break pedal when applying brakes at high speeds. This could not be replicated at the dealership. Dealership inspected front brakes and 're surfaced front rotors twice during same visit. Same symptoms still occur. No visual early warning signs are or were present.

I HAD BRAKES REPLACED IN DECEMBER 2020 WITH 50,000 MILES ON THE CAR. FOR THE LAST FEW WEEKS, I HAVE NOTICED WOBBLING/PULSING WHEN I PRESS ON THE BRAKE. SUSPICIOUS THAT IT WAS THE ROTORS, I HAD THE MECHANIC WHO WAS DOING MY 60,000 MILE SERVICE CHECK THE ROTORS. HE LET ME KNOW THAT THE ROTORS AREN'T EVEN CLOSE TO BEING WARPED. I CALLED SUBARU OF AMERICA WHO IN TURN TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS A "NEW" PROBLEM WITH A "NEW" LIMITED AVAILABILITY PART THAT JUST CAME OUT IN THE PAST TWO WEEKS. BOTH SUBARU OF AMERICA AND THE SUBARU DEALERSHIP I DEAL WITH SAY THIS IS UNDER NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR AND THEY WILL NOT REPLACE IT UNDER WARRANTY. I UNDERSTAND THAT BRAKES ARE WEAR AND TEAR, BUT I ALREADY REPLACED MY BRAKES AND PAID FOR THOSE OUT OF POCKET. IT IS NOT MY FAULT THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE MANUFACTURING OF REPLACEMENT BRAKES TO WHERE THE CAR HAS THIS PROBLEM. SINCE IT IS THE BRAKING SYSTEM, IT COULD OBVIOUSLY BE A SAFETY ISSUE. THEY WANT ME TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR THIS BRAKE PAD KIT (TO THE TUNE OF $200+ AFTER LABOR) WHEN ALL I DID WAS REPLACE THE BRAKES WITH WHAT THEY CAME UP WITH. IF THAT PART IS WRONG, SUBARU NEEDS TO TAKE CARE OF IT.

BRAKES SHOOK VIOLENTLY AT HIGHWAY SPEED AND WHILE DESCENDING MOUNTAIN. TOOK TO DEALER AND THEY SAID THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE. HAD TO REPLACE BRAKES AND ROTORS ON ALL 4 WHEELS. ASCENT HAD ONLY 7600 MILES. VEHICLE NEEDS TO BE RECALLED AND RETROFITTED WITH NEW BRAKES/ROTORS THAT CAN HANDLE THE DEMANDS/WEIGHT OF THE ASCENT.
Nov 27, 2020
AT ABOUT 13,000 MILES THE VEHICLE SHOWED SYMPTOMS OF WARPED FRONT ROTORS. THEY WERE MACHINED SMOOTH. AT 21,000 MILES THE SYMPTOMS RETURNED AND THIS TIME THEY FRONT ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS WERE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE NOW HAS 32,000 MILES AND IS PRESENTING WITH THE SAME SYMPTOMS. THE SYMPTOMS ARE: SHAKING WHEN BRAKING AND A NOTICEABLY DELAYED STOPPING TIME.

The Y pipe that connects the exhaust from the engine to the turbo charger, has cracks from poor welds. It happened 8-12 months ago we started to notice that during warm up our Ascent would sound real loud then quiet down once it warmed up. We didn’t know there was an issue as there were no lights that came on and we had no loss of power or MPG. The safety issue would be that we finally took the car in once we started to smell exhaust fumes coming from the car that we would start to smell from inside the car. We had to start to air out the car after warming up if we couldn’t immediately drive away once started. We contacted Subaru and they offered a partial credit for a repair but after researching I have seen they have had recalls in the past regarding similar cracked Exhaust manifolds on another model car.

During an inspection at the dealership in December 2023, the tech found the oil pan to be leaking. It was resealed during the same visit. I parked my Ascent rear facing inside of my garage to unload my groceries. When i opened my hatch at the front button, the hatch only opened halfway. The hatch would not close with the push of the button and had to be closed manually. Once I returned to my Ascent to go somewhere, the hatch sensor beeped repeatedly, while driving, until coming to a complete stop. Once driving continued, the sensor continued beeping. This occurred with two straight vehicle drives. The entire course of the drive. I parked the Ascent in my garage and returned to the car the next morning and the Ascent would not start. AAA came to do a jumpstart with no remedy. We replaced the battery with a new, borrowed battery and the car started immediately with no beeping. We charged the old battery and replaced the new battery and the Ascent had no other issues, including easy startup and no beeping. There were no warning lights for any of the issues including the hatch or the battery.

My vehicle won’t stay charged. We replaced the battery and still every single time I go out to start it it’s completely dead and I have to get it jumped.
Jan 15, 2023
Spent 5 hours at a tailgate/beach event with the rear lift gate open. I made sure that interior lights were off to avoid draining the battery with the lift gate open. When we were ready to leave, the car battery was dead. We were panicked because we have a 5mo old and had to track down another driver to borrow jumper cables. Once home, we discovered that the lift gate will always draw power from the battery unless you trick the hatch lock with an off-market device or carabiner clip.
Apr 26, 2022
Have had to jump my battery start using a portable power supply at least 4 times. Various reasons, such as leaving the back hatch open for extended periods, leaving the accessories on for a little over 15 minutes etc. At times it appears to struggle to start as though the battery has not fully charged. These incidents has been happening shortly after the vehicle was purchased. They are happening less to date because I'm aware that i cant use ANY accessory for an extended period because of the risk of a dead battery.

SUSPENSION

We observed Subaru Ascent 2019 (Limited) car handling poorly over bumpy areas, especially over bumps on turns even at speeds under 40 mph. Car feels as if it is loosing contact with the road. It is also jarring over bumps even while driving straight. In wet conditions, I do not know if I will be able to stop within the proper distance. We took the car to the dealer, that indicated front struts needed replacement. They could not provide an estimate of when struts would be available -- this was over one month ago. I am uncertain if a repair is possible to correct this apparent safety issue.
Nov 21, 2024
My Ascent is primarily driven in the city of San Francisco, a fairly hilly city. We have had issues with the suspension on this vehicle in the past, and I will need to install my third pair of struts in the coming weeks (the parts are currently on backorder). The CVT has also been replaced on the vehicle. The tires are routinely rotated, and we keep up with the maintenance schedule. We were driving home after dropping our daughters at school and while accelerating up a hill heard a crack. We immediately pulled over, and saw that the lower control arm had sheared.
Nov 18, 2024
There is a knocking or clunking noise at low speeds during and after turning in the front driver's side of the vehicle. Car has 17,500 miles on it. Assembled inspection suggests that tie rod (inner and outer), ball joint, stabilizer links are all intact and functioning properly. No loose components or fasteners. All bushings appear firm and intact. There is an apparent [XXX] ), though seemingly unreported issue with the front-end suspension system that dealerships and service techs can't seem to diagnose. At best, noises go away for a period of time then return. If it's an issue with a wear component then it may be that the OEM parts are deficient for use on this vehicle. Aug 15, 2024
The front suspension is making a clanking noise. Inspection of the front strut towers tops shows an interior separation of the rubber in the Strut bearing at 63k miles. There is also a noticeable difference between the left and right side relative to the components present. The space at the drivers side which is making the noise has a bigger separation in its components when the wheels are in a straight ahead position. The failure of this component can cause a catastrophic accident.

FRESH FUEL SMELL FROM THE VEHICLE (ENTERING THE CABIN WHILE DRIVING AND UPON PARKING). UPON ARRIVING HOME YESTERDAY, THE SMELL WAS STILL VERY STRONG. I WENT A STEP FURTHER AND PULLED THE OIL DIPSTICK TO CHECK THE LEVEL AND TO SEE IF THAT'S WHERE IT WAS ORIGINATING FROM. SURE ENOUGH, THAT IS WHERE I AM SMELLING IT. I WENT SO FAR AS TO WIPE OFF THE DIPSTICK AND CHECK ONCE AGAIN WITH THE SAME RESULT. I ALSO NOTED THAT THE OIL LEVEL IS WELL ABOVE THE HIGH MARK. MY MAIN CONCERN IS THE RISK FOR DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE GIVEN THAT IT APPEARS THAT FUEL IS MIXING IN WITH THE OIL.

Purchase the car two weeks ago the first night on the way home it was acting up just like it did when I test drove it and was told by the BMW dealership Aristocrat Motors in Topeka Kansas that they would fix anything that was wrong with it. On the way home I realized I didn't think it would make it back the 60 miles so I took it to Olathe Subaru they informed me that it had had transmission problems reported by the previous owners but their technician couldn't get it to do it again so the people just traded it in instead and then I got the car without them getting the transmission fixed or whatever was wrong. They are actually waiting on Subaru of America to respond to tell them what needs to be done to the car and in the process I have been two weeks with little information of what's going on. I feel the recall should have been done and the car is still a good car it just needs to be repaired correctly. Thank you for your response I look forward to hearing from you please help.

As I am going up a hill I will be pushing on the gas and the engine will rev up loudly and the rpm will increase but the vehicle speed won’t increase or it decreases as I’m trying to accelerate. This is dangerous because the people behind me are expecting me to be speeding up to go up the hill but my vehicle will be slowing down and won’t let me increase speed. It has been to the dealer multiple times and they say they can’t find nothing wrong. We drove the mechanic around and it did the exact same thing I explained and he still said they couldn’t find anything wrong with it. I know this isn’t normal because when we first bought it, it did not drive like this. I’ve also had multiple people tell me they are experiencing the same exact issues. This has been going on for about a year now. It also has been doing a few other things as well.

On Friday, June 28th, we were driving the Ascent, towing our 4100 lb. camper from Tehachapi, CA, headed north toward Las Vegas. When we stopped for gas in Tehachapi, we checked all fluids including the oil. Then at about 86 miles outside of Las Vegas coming up a steep grade in hot conditions, we hear a noise that sounded like it could be valve flutter. We drove for another minute (there was no shoulder), and noted that no warning lights were on. Then we heard a louder knocking sound and saw the oil temp indicator start moving quickly to hot, and immediately pulled off onto the shoulder. After our tow to the Las Vegas Subaru dealer, it became apparent that the battery was also dead (this was the second battery replaced under warranty, and we have had to jump both batteries at least monthly over the last 2 years). Last Monday, June 14, Subaru notified us by phone on a recorded line that the investigation had concluded. They determined towing excessive weight to be the cause of the engine failure (thrown rod). We verified the make and model and registration of our camper with Subaru, which at a dry weight of 4134 pounds, is 100 lbs. less than the Airstream used in Subaru's promotional materials. We disclosed to Subaru that the camper has few miles on it and we tow with empty tanks and less than 100 pounds of cargo (2 adults and one toddler). We also told them that on our two prior trips towing, the transmission has revved frequently and it sounds like it can't find the right gear. Subaru has not provided us a copy of either inspection report, and we have been without the vehicle for nearly a month. We are asking Subaru to repair the engine under warranty (39k miles). This sudden failure put our family's safety at risk. We were forced to stop the car in the middle of a high-speed highway without safely moving to an exit- we waited in excessive heat, barely off the road in deep sand without a shoulder for an hour- we were almost hit by a semi truck as we braked.

My fiancé and I driving down my driveway when I noticed my dogs were out, I stopped the car, put in park and got out, closing the door behind me. Unbeknownst to me the driver side impact airbag deployed causing my fiancé to loose hearing temporarily and obviously leaving her in shock. Corporate Subaru Of America did a 4 month investigation and told us we had to have shift a foreign object in the door (which we did not). We asked for a report on what happened and they refused. We asked for them to put in writing the exact words they used when they called us and verbally told us their findings and they refused that as well. My thought is if they have nothing to hide then why can’t we have in writing the exact same thing they told us over the phone.

INTERMITTENTLY, APPROXIMATELY 50% OF THE TIME, A PASSENGER SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT DOES NOT TRIGGER THE AIR BAG SIGNAL TO "ON". WHEN THIS STATE OCCURS, IT PERSISTS THROUGH THE PASSENGER EXITING THE VEHICLE AND RE-ENTERING AND THROUGH THE CAR BEING TURNED OFF AND THEN BACK ON. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM MAY GO AWAY HOURS LATER OR THE NEXT DAY WHEN WE RESTART THE CAR. WE HAVE NOT WITNESSED THE AIR BAG SUDDENLY ENABLING MID-RIDE AND WE HAVE NEVER SEEN THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT DISPLAYED. THE PASSENGER IS A FULL-SIZED WOMAN. HER CLOTHING IS TYPICALLY DRY AND THERE IS NO CELL PHONE ON THE SEAT. (WE ARE AWARE THAT THERE HAVE BEEN REPORTS THAT MOISTURE AND ELECTRONICS CAN AFFECT THE SENSOR FOR THE ODS ON SUBARU VEHICLES). WE UNDERSTAND THAT THERE ARE CURRENT CASES UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR SIMILAR PROBLEMS IN THE SUBARU FORESTER. THIS HAS BEEN REPORTED TO OUR SUBARU DEALER (MICHAEL'S SUBARU OF BELLEVUE). WE HAVE BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN FOR THIS FOUR TIMES IN TOTAL, AND IT HAS STAYED AT THEIR FACILITY FOR A WEEK TWICE. THEY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, THEY WILL VERIFY THAT ON ONE OF THE VISITS THE SENSOR WAS IN THE INCORRECT STATE (NOT ENABLED) WHEN WE BROUGHT IN THE VEHICLE AND THEY READ THE CODE. THEY ALSO SAW THAT THE PASSENGER EXITING AND RE-ENTERING THE VEHICLE DID NOT ENABLE THE AIR BAG, NOR DID TURNING THE VEHICLE OFF AND ON AGAIN.

The contact owns a 2019 Subaru Ascent. The contact stated that while driving at 35MPH, the struts were impacted hard which caused the vehicle to shake the dashboard. No warning lights as illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they could not diagnose the failure and would not take apart the vehicle to inspect the strut. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but refused to let the dealer work on the vehicle but offered to give 6,000 dollars on the new vehicle because the vehicle was nonrepairable. The failure mileage was approximately 39,634.

I am currently replacing my 3rd front windshield in 11 months on my 2019 Subaru Ascent (First 8.19.21, Second: 4.15.22; Third was replaced 7.5.22) from a simple rock chip. Within minutes of occurring the chip leads to significant cracking and the inability to navigate safely. It is my understanding that a class-action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of Subaru Ascent owners due to this very issue. It is my understanding Subaru is aware of their windshields being designed at an angle making them susceptible to frequent breaking.

2019 Subaru Ascent purchased new. Auto has about 25,000 miles on it now. When driving at highway speeds the hood vibrates and shakes especially when there is a crosswind. This will damage the latch and cause the hood to fly open when driving at this speed which cold be dangerous. Called two Subaru dealers and they say that is normal. I have owned several cars and this is not normal.

WE HAD TO STOP BOTH TIMES TO CLOSE THE HOOD AND WERE RELIEVED IT DID NOT COME ALL THE WAY UP. I WONDER IF THE LATCH IS NOT SUFFICIENT FOR THE DESIGN TO HANDLE A STRONG WIND. *TR THE CONSUMER REQUESTED TO WITHDRAW COMPLAINT STATING THAT THE LATCH DID NOT COME UNDONE. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STOPPED WITH THE PARKING BRAKE SET, THE REAR DOORS CAN NOT BE OPEN FROM THE REAR DOOR HANDLE. THE CHILD PROOF LOCK IS NOT SET. YOU HAVE TO PRESS THE UNLOCK BUTTON ON THE FRONT DOORS SO THE REAR PAX CAN EXIT. TO ME THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE IN AN EMERGENCY WHEN EVERYONE NEEDS TO EXIT QUICKLY, ONE HAS TO REMEMBER TO UNLOCK THE DOORS FROM THE FRONT DOOR UNLOCK SWITCH TO LET THE REAR PAX OUT. SUBARU TELLS ME THAT IT'S NORMAL, AND I THINK IT SHOULD NOT BE NORMAL. THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. THE DOORS LOCK AUTOMATICALLY ONCE THE VEHICLE STARTS MOVING. I PUT TODAYS DATE AS WHEN THIS HAPPENS SINCE THERE IS NO "ALL THE TIME".

The contact had to use excessive force to complete the turn as several other unknown warning lights illuminated. After she pulled over, the contact was able to resume normal driving after the vehicle was restarted. The contact then called the dealer who informed her to bring in the vehicle to be inspected. ISSUE #1: TRANSMISSION. STARTING AROUND 8000 MILES, A LOUD SQUEALING SOUND WOULD OCCUR PERIODICALLY DURING AUTOMATIC SHIFTING. AT FIRST IT WAS ONLY WHILE OBTAINING HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND LATER IT WOULD HAPPEN AT CITY STREET SPEEDS. THE SQUEALING SOUND WOULD BE ACCOMPANIED BY A SHUTTERING FEELING AS WELL. WE LIVE 3 HOURS FROM THE DEALER AND WERE TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THE CAR WAS JUST 'GETTING TO KNOW US'. AS THIS PROBLEM PERSISTED AND WORSENED, WE WERE FINALLY BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER AT 12,000 MILES AND THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM AND SAID WE NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION. THAT WAS ON 9/27/19. WE ARE AWAITING THE AVAILABILITY OF A NEW TRANSMISSION WHILE DRIVING A LOANER. ISSUE #2: ELECTRICAL ISSUE. TWICE ALL OF THE ENGINE WARNING/DASHBOARD LIGHTS CAME ON WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 20 MPH ON A DIRT ROAD. THE FIRST TIME WAS AROUND 9800 MILES. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR AND BROUGHT THE CAR TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP (SUBARU DEALER IS 150 MILES AWAY) AND HIS COMPUTER DIAGNOSED A POSSIBLE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM AND HE REBOOTED THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. ALL SEEMED OK WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FOR A WHILE. THIS HAPPENED AGAIN AROUND 11,000 MILES WHILE BEING DRIVEN AT CITY STREET SPEEDS AND THE NEXT MORNING THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WAS BACK TO NORMAL. IN TALKING TO THE SUBARU DEALER BY PHONE, THEY SAID THERE WAS PROBABLY JUST A BUG IN THE SYSTEM AND IT CAN FIX ITSELF. AT THE 12,000 MILE APPT, NO ISSUES WERE DISCOVERED WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.

GASOLINE VAPORS IN CABIN AND AROUND CAR. AFTER THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN PARKED, GASOLINE VAPORS ARE ACCUMULATING AROUND CAR. WE EXPERIENCE STRONG GASOLINE VAPORS IN OUR ENCLOSED GARAGE AFTER DRIVING (APPEARING 10-15 MINUTES AFTER TURNING CAR OFF). ALSO, AFTER DRIVING FOR EVEN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, THEN TURNING THE CAR OFF, THEN STARTING AGAIN, GASOLINE VAPORS ENTER THE CABIN THROUGH THE VENTS (IF NON-RECIRCULATING). DEALER CONFIRMED WE GASOLINE MIXED WITH OUR MOTOR OIL (DEALER CHANGED THE OIL, BUT DIDN'T CORRECT THE PROBLEM). WHILE THIS IS ALARMING ENOUGH, THE SMELL CONTINUES. THE SMELL OF GASOLINE IN THE CABIN AND MY HOME GARAGE IS NOT HEALTH/SAFETY RISK FOR MY FAMILY BREATHING IN, BUT SINCE SUBARU DOESN'T KNOW A CAUSE, COULD IT BE A RISK FOR A FIRE. MY FAMILY SHOULDN'T BE DRIVING IN A BRAND NEW CAR THAT IS INTRODUCING GASOLINE VAPORS UNDER NORMAL OPERATION. OTHERS ON MESSAGE BOARDS ARE COMPLAINING OF SIMILAR ISSUES WHICH COULD POINT TO A BIGGER PROBLEM. THANK YOU!

Vehicle has experienced total loss of power while driving under normal circumstances. This has occurred in a drive-thru, at 45 and 50mph, and also twice during 70mph highway driving. The entire vehicle shuts down and multiple dash board lights illuminate at the time of power loss. I first documented this on 4/7/22 and it randomly occurs every month, once it even happened twice in the same day. I had called the dealership (where I purchased the vehicle and have it serviced) multiple times throughout the spring and summer awaiting parts for the TCM recall with the assumption that this could be the issue. However , my vehicle passed the recall and even after the new TCM was placed on 8/19, I again had the same event on 10/1. Vehicle was taken in on 10/6 for diagnostics on this issue again and nothing found. I do not feel like the dealership has been accurately documenting my issues so I will need to be more persistent in getting someone to address the problem as this could be a serious safety issue.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

The two map lights and the part referred to as the front overhead console has a defective design which at the least stops the lights from working properly, but at the worst, can start a fire. Subaru must be aware of the problem because it routinely change them. My vehicle listed above was ready for the installation of the third console when I said to myself, this one is not under warranty so let me call Subaru. They agreed to cover part of the cost- now we are sure that Subaru knows there is a fire hazard, didn’t report it, do a voluntary recall, or notify you. Am I eligible for money for whistleblowing? So I have pictures of the melted condition, and the repair. I also made a video of the repair. You can search re-engineering Subaru ascent map light console if you want to see it. I figured the cause, developed a solution, and re-engineered it. I can, most can’t. I definitely shouldn’t have to get out a solder gun and repair the electrical components because they are defective. The problem is the design. The direction you push the light cover switch pushes the socket away from its contact. This creates a gap that causes heat that both melts the plastic, and also cracking and melting around the plate of metal that makes contact with the socket. I just soldered them together and have a light that works perfect, but i do have degraded cracked plastic around the socket, so I condenser it perhaps temporary, but better than hearing the light sizzle while arcing. Plus the lights work every time. You can search Subaru ascent maplight and will find a bunch of people asking about the problem. For some it just stops working which is the best thing. For others you get sizzleing and a dim light. The resulting arcing also causes the light to turn off improperly and results in sizzling also. That’s should not be able to happen. Off is off. Let’s get this taken care of. We dont want injuries, or accident s because the light started smoking and distracted someone.

WE TOOK POSSESSION OF THIS VEHICLE OCTOBER 2019, BRAND NEW ORDER. EVER SINCE WE HAVE HAD THIS VEHICLE WE HAVE QUESTIONED SEVERAL DEALERS REGARDING THE HEADLIGHTS PLACEMENT. WHEN YOU DRIVE ON NON LIT ROADS YOU CAN ONLY SEE ABOUT 6 FEET IN FRONT OF YOU. ANYONE WALKING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, AN ANIMAL, BROKEN DOWN VEHICLE, THE STREET YOU ARE SUPPOSE TO TURN ON; YOU DO NOT SEE UNTIL YOU ARE RIGHT ON TOP OF THE OBJECT. WE HAVE BEEN DRIVING WITH THE HIGH BEAMS ON IN ORDER TO SEE WHAT IS AHEAD OF US. THE LOW BEAMS ENGAGED SEEM TO HAVE A WALL ABOUT 6 FEET OUT THAT YOU CAN NOT SEE BEYOND THAT AREA. WE WERE TOLD THAT THE HEADLIGHTS ARE AIMED PROPERLY AND THERE IS NOTHING THAT THEY CAN OR WILL DO ABOUT IT. WHEN DRIVING IN A LIGHTED AREA IT IS NOT AS BAD; WHEN DRIVING DOWN BACK UNLIT ROADS WITH TRAFFIC COMING AT YOU OR TRAFFIC IN FRONT OF YOU THE HEADLIGHTS ARE TERRIBLE. WE LIVE IN A RURAL AREA WITH VERY LITTLE STREET LIGHTING AND I AM REALLY CONCERNED ABOUT HITTING SOMETHING BECAUSE THE HEADLIGHT DO NOT ILLUMINATE ENOUGH TO SEE OBJECTS IN THE ROAD. WE ASKED OUR SALES PERSON ABOUT THE HEADLIGHTS AND HE WENT OUT AND TESTED OUR CONCERN, HE TOLD US TO SAY SOMETHING TO THE MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT WHEN WE BROUGHT THE CAR IN FOR ITS FIRST INSPECTION. WE WERE TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT THE HEADLIGHTS. I HAVE ASKED AT THE NEXT DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE SAME THING. I AM AT A LOSS ON HOW TO CORRECT THIS.

PURCHASED A NEW 2019 SUBARU ASCENT IN FEBRUARY 2019. AFTER HAVING IT HOME A FEW DAYS NOTICED A CHIP WITH A SMALL CRACK IN THE WINDSHIELD ON THE BOTTOM DRIVERS SIDE CORNER NEAR THE BLACKED OUT AREA, WHICH I DID NOT SEE WHEN I TOOK THE CAR. CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND BROUGHT THE CAR IN TO SHOW THEM. THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AND I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR A NEW WINDSHIELD. A MONTH LATER I WROTE A LETTER TO THE OWNER OF THE DEALERSHIP AND NEVER RECEIVED A RESPONSE OR ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF MY LETTER. THIS HAPPENS IN ANY ENVIRONMENT (PARKING LOT, OUR DRIVEWAY, RURAL AREA) WHEN THE CAR IS IN PARK AND STILL RUNNING. RARELY HAVE I SMELLED THE FUMES UPON STARTING THE CAR, ALTHOUGH IT HAS HAPPENED BEFORE. THE PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED IN EVERY SEASON AND WITH THE CAR BLOWING OUT WARM, NEUTRAL, AND AIR CONDITIONED AIR. THIS WAS NOTICED VERY SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASING THE CAR IN SEPTEMBER OF 2018. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR IN TO THE SUBARU DEALERSHIP THREE TIMES AND THEY HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIND THE ISSUE. THE FIRST TIME THEY WERE ABLE TO DETECT THE SMELL BUT FOUND NO PROBLEM TO CORRECT. THE OTHER TWO TIMES THEY SAID THEY WEREN'T ABLE TO REPLICATE THE SMELL EVEN AFTER LEAVING IT ON FOR AN HOUR. I CAN ELICIT THE SMELL EVERY TIME IF I LET IT RUN FOR A FEW MINUTES WHILE PARKED. OTHERS APPEAR TO BE HAVING THIS ISSUE AS WELL AND ARE BEING TOLD THE SAME THING BY THEIR DEALERSHIPS. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS ISSUE AS MY CHILDREN MAY BE AFFECTED WHEN THEY ARE IN THE CAR.

Over the course of 5 years, a lot has been mechanically wrong with our vehicle. Each service appointment yielded a 'cannot duplicate' response. Recently, my car has been in the service department a few times. My car had recall work performed on a ground bolt, and my husband advised them that the car had a 'rich fuel' smell when starting with the hood open. I've complained since 2021 of a smell when pulling up the mountain. The smell is what I described as a perm solution smell. Each time, the response was 'cannot duplicate.' In February, I took the car in to have the exhaust inspected because it was getting louder each passing day. I was advised that the entire exhaust needed to be replaced, and I would be responsible for costs. I brought my car home, unrepaired, and called Subaru of America to file a claim through them. I had repeatedly expressed concerns, and nothing was done, yet I'm expected to foot the bill now. Since February 12th, I have been back and forth with Subaru and just made the appointment to get the exhaust work completed, with a small contribution from Subaru. However, this past Saturday, [XXX] my vehicle caught on fire while driving. I am fine, but my vehicle has now been deemed a total loss. As I was descending the mountain, I smelled the same 'perm solution' smell, and shortly after, there was smoke coming from under the hood. The smoke entered the cabin as I pulled off the road. Upon exiting the vehicle, flames and smoke were visible from the hood. I grabbed my purse and ran, called 911, and watched my vehicle engulfed in flames. I had to pay $150 for a tow to the nearest Subaru dealership, even though I was 65 miles from my home. It would have cost $450 to be towed to my local dealership. The dealership wouldn’t tell me if this was covered by warranty because they didn’t know. I was at about 65,000 miles and my original warranty had ended. In the end, Subaru replaced my transmission but never gave me a loaner. Subaru also kept saying it would be done soon, but took a week. In the mean time I had to find a way to work, and pay the tow bill. Now, my Subaru Ascent is feeling like it did before, such as hesitation when stepping on the gas. I believe Subaru put in a transmission that was the previous recalled one. I also believe that Subaru lied to me about putting in a brand new transmission. I have tried to make a service appointment for the recall and problems with the transmission, but there are no appointments available. I stopped looking when I got to the bookings that were a year out. No warning lamps before this, just hesitation when stepping on the gas pedal.

SEAT BELTS
1 complaint
In February 2020, my wife and I discovered fraying on the edge of the second row center seat belt on our 2019 Subaru Ascent. The belt was stuck in the connected position and would not retract into the ceiling retracting apparatus. Other than the fraying on the edge of the belt, the belt was in near-new condition. The vehicle had approximately 23,000 miles on it. She took it to the dealer, Adventure Subaru of Fayetteville. The wear pattern was substantially the same as depicted on a 2022 Subaru Outback we own, Complaint #11468872. The dealer refused to honor the belt’s lifetime warranty. The technician said the fraying was caused by an “outside influence”, possibly our dog. The dog could not have damaged the belt in the manner of the fraying and there were no teeth marks or stains on the belt. It was imperative that the belts be replaced on the spot since our five grandchildren were occasional passengers. The dealer has no records identifying the “outside influence” When the fraying was discovered on the rear center belts on our Outback in May, 2022 (Complaint #1146872), I checked all belts in the Ascent. I discovered that the right and left third row belts had the same wear pattern as on the rear center seat belt replaced in February 2020 AND as on the 2022 Outback (Complaint 1146872). The dealer honored the lifetime warranty on the belts and replaced them on June 8, 2022, when the car had mileage of 48439. The wear pattern on the belt replaced on February 20, 2020, and June 8, 2022, were substantially similar to each other and to the wear pattern on the 2022 Outback. I checked both vehicles closely to find a pinch point or some other edge that could cause the fraying. It is not possible that our dog could have chewed any belt in the pattern displayed. Attached are 8 photos of the belts replaced June 8. I could not upload two photos that exceeded the allowed size.

My wife was pulling into a parking spot at a Safeway in Seattle. The car, instead of stopping, sped up when she stepped on the brakes, slamming into a brick wall. She shifted into reverse, and the car sped backwards, then shifted to drive, and sped forward and slammed into a wall again. She shifted to park and pulled on the parking brake. Then, after 5 minutes with the car off, she drove home without incident and parked, although the car was severely damaged.

The contact owns a 2019 Subaru Ascent. The contact stated that after arriving to his destination from driving and powering off the vehicle, the vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle required a jump start in order to restart. After the restart, the Traction Control and Anti-Collision warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact notified the local dealer of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 26,000.

I have received numerous recalls on this model and failed to receive WUV-07. Now they have sent WRK-21 to replace WUV-07 and tell me the tools and reprogramming should arrive by May and they will contact me again. This is a drive train slippage issue (something I have been complaining about since I purchased the car) and very hazardous. I was planning 2 trips between now and then and I believe Subaru is uniquely slow in fixing this critical issue. Also in an unrelated matter I was forced to put 4 new tires on this vehicle already replacing the original tires after 29,000 miles. I do not believe Subaru did due testing diligence prior to releasing this model for weight/handling/tire strength.

Rear lift-gate (power tailgate hatch) emits an audible constant tone, and will not open. The car can be in park, off, or driving and will not stop the audible tone and the lift gate remains locked closed. You can not unlock the lift-gate by using the door mounted unlock, the rear lift-gate button or by key fob. No matter what the lift-gate will remain in a locked and fixed state. The only (temporary) fix is to manually disconnect the battery terminals and "reset" the car. No warning lights are displayed, dealership is unable to "find" a trouble code or fix. This is an ongoing problem, occurring with intermittent frequency. This is certainly a safety issue, as a rear occupant can be trapped in case of an emergency.

Steering is so sensitive that it exhausted driver. Lane control is exhausting. Transmission looses power, but mechanics say nothing registering. The car smokes on cold start and white exhaust smells terrible. This is worse in summer when transmission is hot. Hatch can’t be left open when camping because it ran my battery dead. There is no lighting at the back of car and front interior lights, LED, time out.

I have reported to dealership in Edinburg Tx that the head lights dem at night. Dealership claims is normal for lights to dem. Now, the battery is dead. It won’t start. On 11-19 I arrived from Disney at the Airport only to experience that my 2029 Ascent didn’t start. I called road side assistance it it would take about an hour to come jumó start me. I went with a helper to get some cables and started my vehicle. I called the dealer and I was told to bring the Ascent until December 1. That’s the date that dealer could check my vehicle. I’m home and the and I can’t get an answer if my batter has warranty. I’ll keep calling. Bad service from dealership to Roadside service.

1 complaint
Trying to pass an 18-wheeler on PA Turnpike. Weather 68-degrees, sunny day, no precipitation. When accelerating, the vehicle began shaking. There was a stutter in engine, shaking the vehicle. Suddenly a loud bang jolted the car and the Crash avoidance system applied breaks (I was the left passing lane, at a speed of 70 mph, with more than a dozen vehicles close behind). Emergency collision warning, EyeSight warning, check engine, RAB, and numerous dash error alterts illuminated. The parking brake turned on and off without human intervention (it's computer-controlled). The engine shut off and a multiple car fishtail began behind me. Fortunately, no one was hurt. I put the car in Neutral, lurched to the side of the road, and called OnStar. Calls to the dealer have not been returned. I drive elementary children to scouts and sporting events. I can't imagine the horror had they been harmed or worse.

Hi Issue #1: My Subaru never gives the MPG what they promised, on average I get 17 or 18 MPG mixed drive supposed to get 21MPG, whenever I complain to the dealership they give a standard answer about it depends on driving style never attempted to find the root cause. Never had this issue with my previous cars, I used to get the same as what they promised. So I feel not related to driving style. Issue #2: Blue smoke came multiple times, so not consistent reproducing not sure. Issue #3. My battery died many times couple of times had called roadside, later I got a jump starter and I have used it multiple times to start my car, and replaced the new battery under warranty and Subaru paid for it, but unfortunately, the new battery I got had also died and got it replaced by warranty.

Unknown. Electrical failures including eyesight, the dealers lie about the work they do, the latest was recent - they said sludge was everywhere which causes the timing to be off and said the entire engine needed to be replaced but refused to do so. I do not trust they were honest about the spot welds, as my VIN and contract were mysteriously changed after I took delivery. Battery dies, amp dies, head unit stops functioning for months at a time. Eyesight slams on brakes at last minute. I am told it’s normal to shut up and leave. For example the last time I took it in less than 30 days ago they said they changed the filters as well. They did not. According to them they owe me a new engine. I have Starlink and documents oil is changed by Subaru yet they claimed they had no record, and it is my fault so I need to replace engine.

I WAS ALREADY AT THE BEACH AT EMERALD ISLE NC AND HAD TO GO PICK HIM UP AT PARKWAY SUBARU IN JACKSONVILLE NC. THIS WAS ON JULY 2,2020. TODAY, JULY 11, WE STILL DON'T HAVE MY CAR BACK. TOOK CAR TO SUBARU DEALER WHERE THEY TOLD ME THE ROTORS WOULD NEED TO,BE CUT! ON A NEW CAR WITH UNDER 900 MILES! TOOK IT HOME AND THE NOISE WAS LESS BUT GREW LOUDER AS THE WEEK WENT ON. BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO SUBARU AND THEY INDICATED THEY WOULD REPLACE THE ROTORS AND THE BRAKE PADS. OF COURSE, THEY DIDN'T MENTION IT WOULD TAKE OVER A WEEK AND A HALF TO GET THE PARTS. NOISE WAS WHEN BRAKING WHETHER STATIONARY OR MOVING. ANOTHER ISSUE IS WHEN MY CELL PHONE RINGS, THE RADIO STARTS BLASTING! I ALMOST RAN OFF THE ROAD. THIS HAPPENED TWICE AND THE DEALERSHIP CAN'T SEEM TO REPLICATE THE ISSUE. THEY TOLD ME THEY HAD NOT HAD TO RESOLVE BOTH THE BRAKES AND RADIO ISSUE WITH ANYONE ELSE IN THEIR DEALERSHIP. WE TOOK OUR 2019 ASCENT IN BECAUSE WE WERE HEARING SOME WEIRD NOISES COMING FROM THE FRONT END ROUGHLY 5000 MILES. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION THE SUBARU DEALERSHIP INFORMED US THAT THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE STEERING RACK. THEY ASKED US TO ALLOW THEM TO ORDER A NEW STEERING RACK AND THEY WOULD CALL US AND SETUP AN APPOINTMENT TO CHANGE OUT THE RACK. ON SATURDAY THE AUG 17TH WE WENT ON A DRIVE WITH A TECHNICIAN TO SHOW HIM WHAT WE WERE FEELING IN THE TRANSMISSION. HE DROVE IT FOR PROBABLY 15 TO 20 MINUTES, SEVERAL DIFFERENT SPEEDS. HE TOO NOTICED SOME WEIRD SHIFT POINTS. ALSO COULD HEAR THE FRONT END. WE LEFT IT THERE AND CALLED THEM TODAY (19TH) TO FIND OUT THAT IT ISN'T THE STEERING RACK. IT'S THE COIL SPRINGS HITTING SOMETHING CAUSING THEM TO CHIP. THE TECHNICIAN STATED, WE WILL GET WITH THEM ON A NEW UPDATED PART AND YOU CAN PROBABLY COME IN AND SWAP OUT CARS UNTIL WE GET THE PARTS IN. MEANING, GIVE BACK SERVICE VEHICLE FOR OURS. I TOLD HIM AT THAT POINT THAT I HAVE NO ISSUES WITH THEM KEEPING IT TO REASSURE IT'S SAFE FOR OUR FAMILY TO BE IN. HE SAID OK I APPRECIATE IT I'LL BE CALLING YOU TOMORROW. THEY ALSO SAID THAT THEY DID A TORQUE CONVERTER DIAL IN AND THAT THE TRANSMISSION SHOULD BE BACK TO NORMAL. HOPEFULLY ALL IS WELL AND IT DOES IN FACT FIX THE WEIRD SHIFTING AND HESITATION AT ALL SPEEDS. ACCELERATING AND DECELERATING.

WITHIN MY FIRST TWO WEEKS (200-300 MILES) OF OWNING THE VEHICLE I WAS TOLD BY STEVENS CREEK SUBARU THAT THE CAR WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AND HERE WE ARE AGAIN. ANOTHER FAILED STRUT. SO BY DEDUCTION, IT'S UNSAFE TO DRIVE BUT THAT HASN'T STOPPED SUBARU FROM PUTTING ME BACK IN IT, FULLY AWARE THAT THE STRUT HAS FAILED VERIFIED AT 20,000 MILES BUT PROBLEM STARTED 12,000 MILES AGO. IN MOTION THIS IS A PROBLEM EVERYWHERE. SAFETY ISSUE. SUBARU IS NOT MAKING ME DRIVE FOR ALMOST A MONTH WITH A FAILED STRUT, WAITING ON PARTS. LET'S TALK ABOUT BRAKES NEXT... SO THEY REPLACED THE FRONT PADS WITH "SPECIAL" BRAKES, HAND DELIVERED FROM JAPAN. WHY? WHAT ARE THESE "SPECIAL" PADS AND HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT? I REALLY WANT TO KNOW WHAT'S DIFFERENT ABOUT THESE? ARE THEY SOFTER? WILL THEY WEAR OUT FASTER? I'M NOT HONESTLY THRILLED THAT THEY RESURFACED THE ROTORS. AGAIN... BRAND NEW CAR... BRAND NEW ROTORS... NOW THEY HAVE EXTRA "WEAR" AS A RESULT OF THE BAD BRAKES FROM THE FACTORY AND THEY WILL WEAR OUT FASTER. WOULD HAVE PREFERRED THEM TO BE REPLACED. THIS ONLY ADDS ADDITIONAL OUT OF WARRANTY COSTS TO ME IN THE END. ESPECIALLY IF THE NEW PADS ALSO WEAR QUICKER. SAFETY WE JUST BLINDLY APPLIED THE ECU FIRMWARE UPGRADE WITH NO PRE-DRIVE TEST TO VERIFY THE PROBLEM. WHICH WAS WHY THE CAR WAS LEFT OVERNIGHT IN THE FIRST PLACE INITIALLY. SO WE HAVE NO DOCUMENTATION OF THE ISSUE JUST THAT WE FLASHED THE FIRMWARE. FROM MY TESTS THE PAST TWO MORNINGS IT SEEMS BETTER AND POSSIBLY RESOLVED BUT AGAIN, THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN PROPERLY DOCUMENTED AND TESTED AND WAS NOT. THE SURGING ENGINE CONDITION / TRANSMISSION GEAR RATIO HUNTING PROBLEM WAS NEVER VERIFIED BY THE DEALER. THEY BLINDLY FLASHED THE FIRMWARE AND ALSO DIDN'T ROAD TEST AFTER THE FACT.
