Around 8 am on 1/4/2022, driving the car on I85 in Durham County, NC, at a normal highway speed, the sunroof glass shattered suddenly and without warning. The sunroof was fully closed at the time, but the inside cover was open. Shards of glass were sprayed within the cabin. This was a dangerous distraction to the driver, and could have been much more serious if he had gotten glass in his eyes from looking up to see what had happened. There was no apparent impact to the sunroof glass from a rock or other object outside the car, and the sunroof was not being opened or closed at the time. We contacted Subaru of America and our local dealer. The car is no longer under warranty, and Subaru refused to cover the cost of repair (though I see online we are not the only ones to have this problem). The local dealer could not perform the repair for another week, so we bought a new sunroof glass and installed it ourselves. There was no apparent damage to the surrounding metal frame or roof. The car and shattered sunroof were not examined by anyone else. I have the damaged sunroof, but was planning to discard it. I am attaching an email we received from Subaru of America, along with photos of the sunroof.

Windshield spontaneously cracked. No impact or accident.

Subaru Outback windshield cracks again within 2 months after warranty replacement pursuant to windshield settlement agreement. The claimed enhanced windshield from Subaru is exposed to the issue reported from the windshield settlement agreement, and Subaru refused to provide warranty replacement to fix this issue. Carter Subaru replaced my windshield on 02/15/2022. The new windshield placed by Carter Subaru crack on 4/24/2022 while I stop at a restaurant and there is no obvious external influence in my windshield.

The windshield spontaneously cracked at the deicer area. The windshield is available for inspection. The crack has grown and is interfering with visibility. The crack in the deicer part of the windshield is easy to see. I have called and left messages about the cracked windshield for the Subaru service manager at the dealership where we bought the car. The service manager has not returned my calls. I drove the car to the Subaru dealer and showed the crack to the substitute service manager (Brian from Kia). Brian took my name and number and said he would contact the Subaru rep for me. To date, I have not heard from the Subaru rep about the spontaneously cracked windshield. There was no warning that the windshield would crack. I was driving the car on Saturday June 5th when I heard a pop. There was no other traffic on the paved road I was driving on. Noticed a crack low on the windshield starting at the deicer area.

Car unable to restart after sitting for several days. Battery and charging system test good after incident
Jul 03, 2025
Yesterday, my car would not start due to a dead battery. This happened last week, as well. Both times, my husband used a battery charger to enable me to start my car. I have had this issue multiple times in the past, as well, and previously replaced the battery in 2022. I am also aware of a previous class action lawsuit, and several customer complaints about parasitic drain and poor battery performance in the 2015 Subaru Outbacks. Continuing to replace the battery is not only costly and bad for the environment, it doesn't solve the problem. There is some flaw in the electrical design of this car and Subaru needs to address the root cause. I am very concerned that I am going to be stranded somewhere in unsafe conditions, or not have my car available to me when I need to get to a critical appointment or respond to an emergency. This is unacceptable.

Battery fails repeatedly even after several battery replacements and dealer fixing the software at a hefty cost, presumable to make sure the battery is charging. My insurance company (State Farm) dropped my roadside assistance coverage after repeated requests to get help to start the car. I continuously dread and fear that the car will not start after a drive to the grocery store. I dear not think about using the car to take a trip away from home. I bought jump starters and now take one with me every time I consider driving this car. God forbid it drains outs before I get back to the house to recharge it, which has happened and ended up bigging a stranger to jump start my car. It is a shame that this reputable company can sell a car that has this problem, that could be easily fixed which seems to be not a problem for other manufacturers.

Horn became intermittent with failure related to steering wheel position, then failed altogether. No horn is a safety issue. We replaced the 'SRC SET 83196AJO4', AKA 'clockspring', the wiring assembly that connects the AIRBAG as well as the HORN, and all steering wheel controls.

Been having issues with my Subaru Outback dying for years now. I’ve gone through 5 battery’s the last 6 years. No amount of driving seems to fix the issue, the replacement batteries only work for so long until it gets cold or I don’t drive my car for a week and suddenly it dies. I believe there is a parasitic drain somewhere, I can’t figure out what. I have nothing obstructing the hatch locking mechanism, I turn all my lights off and air system off before turn turning the car off. It’s becoming a serious issue, I have to jump my car almost everyday or every other day and am driving for over 40 minutes a day. Subaru has been unhelpful and I’m now not trusting of their help.

The horn stopped working on my vehicle. This puts my safety and other driver's safety at risk since I can not alert them if they are coming into my lane. I contacted Subaru Customer Advocacy but they are not willing to fix this problem. I checked the online forums and this seems to be a common problem.

iNFOMATION UNIT STOPPED WORKING AND HAS MOISTURE FOG INSIDE OF IT. I WAS USING IT FOR THE MAP ROUTE IN AN AREA THAT I WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH WHEN IT STOPPED WORKING. I DO NOT KNOW HOW MOISTURE COULD GET IN A SEALED UNIT BUT IT IS OVER $22,000. TO REPLACE IT. PERHAPS THIS DOES NOT QUALIFY AS A SAFETY ISSUE BUT IT WAS FOR ME SINCE I NEEDED DIRECTIONS AS TO HOW TO GET HOME.

The child safety lock on the passenger side will not disengage. Our child is old enough now to operate the door safely but she cannot open the door from the inside. I feel that this is a great safety concern and the dealer should take care of the cost. When we asked if it could be fixed the dealer expressed that it would be on us for all charges. This is a manufacturer defect and should be rectified immediately. Thank you.

On my drive in to work this morning, the sunroof on my outback shattered with a loud bang. Fortunately the inside sun shade was closed, otherwise I would have been showered with glass while driving 50mph on the expressway. How does this happen? There were no trees overhead, no cars or trucks near me, the temperature was not especially hot or cold. And, I would think the glass would have a film or something that would hold the pieces together in the unlikely event that it would break!

POWER TRAIN
20 complaints
After a transmission replacement performed by Bud Clary Chevrolet, Inc. in Longview, WA on September 9, 2025, my vehicle was returned to me with critical components left unsecured. On November 19, 2025, an independent mechanic discovered loose suspension bolts connecting the ball joints to the spindles on both front wheels. On November 29, 2025, Subaru of Portland documented additional unsecured and unattached components related to the prior transmission replacement, including loose mounting hardware and a disconnected PCV hose. Subaru of Portland’s written inspection states that the loose bolts would have been unsafe if left uncorrected. These conditions were present after a major repair and created a potential safety hazard while the vehicle was being driven. This complaint concerns an unsafe condition caused by improper workmanship during a vehicle repair.

When shifted into drive or reverse, with brakes applied, and after initial start the vehicle will surge forward or reverse with force enough to overcome standard braking.
Feb 10, 2024
The continuously variable transmission failed at 114,000 miles. The unexpected lack of proper shifting on the roadway causes impediment to traffic expecting a continual flow of traffic. This causes the vehicle and drivers sharing the rode to have to make sudden braking or lane shifts without sufficient notice. The CVT was inspected by the dealer. There were no warning lamps or symptoms prior to failure.

ENGINE

The cam carrier has a leak that is causing oil to slowly leak out of the car. The current issue is causing me to have to regularly add oil to the car. My safety is at risk as the car engine could fail while driving which would be me and others at risk. My understanding is that the leaking oil could also cause other parts to fail such as the O2 sensor. The recommended repair from the local Subaru dealer is to reseal the cam carrier at an estimated cost of $4,744. I attempted to contact Subaru after reading that many others have had this same issue and some have received monetary compensation to get the repair completed after complaining. Subaru has been very difficult to get in touch with and doesn't seem to want to respond to the issue. The only warning I have had was the oil engine light coming on multiple times to which I proceeded to add oil to the car.
Dec 05, 2023
The car had a recall on it for the catalytic converter and front pipe and bellows being cracked. It was replaced under a service bulletin put out by Subaru at 104,000 miles in 2020. I just went to get the vehicle inspected in 5/2023 and the exact same part is failing once again. It will not pass inspection. This causes exhaust to leak back into the car (including carbon monoxide) given the converter/bellows are parts that come off the engine right under the driver/passenger's front seat. I have called corporate Subaru to see what could be done and they refuse to do anything since they told me the car is a 2015 and had 167,000+ miles. At this point, it will cost me a few thousand dollars to fix at which point has to be done by Subaru and they will replace it with the exact same parts that have proven time and time again to be a poor design and fail. Or I can take it to an exhaust specialist to be fixed.

The contact owned a 2015 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that while driving at 60 MPH, he was alerted by another driver that the vehicle was smoking and flames were coming from under the vehicle. The contact stated that warning lights flashed off and on. The contact stated that he pulled over, exited the vehicle, and saw flames coming from underneath the vehicle before it was engulfed in flames and exploded. The contact stated that he sustained minor burns on his hands from the steering wheel however, medical attention was not required. The fire was extinguished by the fire department. A fire department report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a junkyard as it was deemed a total loss. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a field technician was sent to retrieve information from the EDR. The contact was not aware of the diagnosis. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

On 8/25/21, during servicing, I was informed by the Subaru dealer who has always serviced my car that the driver's side head gasket was starting to go bad. The car had 54,108 miles on it and was 6 years and 5 months old. It had always been driven under normal conditions, on public roads, and 100% of the servicing had been performed by the Subaru dealer who sold me the car, which I bought new. In addition, I had never used the car for towing. Under the circumstances, it seemed indefensible that the head gasket should be going bad. It's a very expensive repair. The engine in question is the 3.6-liter 6-cylinder.

2015 Subaru Outback Premium. Took in to a very helpful local Subaru Dealer and they discovered that the front subframe has rusted out seemingly prematurely. The vehicle just turned 10 years old with and upon doing research it seems to be a widely known commonly occurring problem. Would be handy if Subaru of America could do a recall on the front subframe as it is a very high cost repair to have it done correctly with the safest outcome.

The dealer found significant rusting on the front subframe and some on the rear subframe. The front was enough there's a hole in it. I was told it was not safe to drive as it would not hold in an accident.

SERVICE BRAKES
12 complaints
While driving the Parking Brake warning light came on and the Subaru Eyesight system shut down. On stopping the car and restarting, the car got harder to drive. I pulled over again immediately as the parking brake was locking the wheels up. I got a tow truck to take the car to the Subaru dealer. By this time the rear wheels were completely locked up. If the car had to stop at a railroad crossing, the immobile car would be in a dangerous spot. The dealer service shop said there was Code C1411, C1194, C1956, C1942 and "Electronic Parking Brake Connector Failure". This was repaired under Warranty Extension Repair indicating that Subaru knew this was a serious problem but refused to do an emergency recall. Instead they intentionally allowed people to drive a dangerously defective vehicle.
Jun 29, 2024
The issue below has occurred previously and was addressed by a completed recall "EPB Reprogramming" - WTB63. However, issue has reappeared. Issue: The parking brake engages without engaging parking brake switch while parked and also blinks a red warning while driving. We had an issue a few days ago where brake engaged by itself in parking lot (even though parking brake light never came on). I managed to get the car out of park by turning the car on and off several times and also pressing parking brake switch. The car is scheduled for Subaru service on 5 June, they will be able to do more diagnostics after reading error codes. The dealer told me that parking brake should not engage while driving which is my main concern...but I'm also concerned about possibility of being stranded somewhere because I cannot turn off the parking brake.
May 26, 2023
The electronic parking brake disengages on it's own after being set. After putting the vehicle in park and pulling on the EPB switch, the light comes on for a short time, then turns off. Attempting to re-engage it results in the same thing, it comes on briefly then disengages without being touched.

BRAKES WERE MOMENTARY APPLIED BY SUBURU EYESIGHT BRAKING ASSIST SYSTEM WHILE DRIVING (IN MOTION AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH) ON A STRAIGHT PORTION OF AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY WITH NO OBSTRUCTION APPARENT. THIS HAD ALSO HAPPENED ONE OTHER TIME IN THE SAME VEHICLE SEVERAL MONTHS BEFORE IN SIMILAR CIRCUMSTANCES. ON BOTH INSTANCES THE DRIVER HAD HER FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR AND THE BRAKES RELEASED AFTER ONLY A SHORT DECELERATION. A QUICK FLASH OF THE BAS WARNING LIGHT WAS ALSO OBSERVED IN THE SECOND INSTANCE. A SECOND PERSON IN THE CAR AT THE TIME ALSO STATES THAT THERE WAS NO OBSTRUCTION SEEN ON THE ROAD AND THE DISTANCE TO ANY CAR AHEAD IN THE SAME LANE SHOULD NOT HAVE CAUSED THE PROBLEM BEING REPORTED. THERE WAS A REAL CONCERN THAT CARS FOLLOWING US ON THIS BUSY HIGHWAY COULD HAVE EASILY CAUSED A REAR-END COLLISION IF THE BRAKES HAD NOT RELEASED QUICKLY. THE DRIVER HAD NEVER TAKEN HER FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR AND WAS CAUGHT COMPLETELY BY SURPRISE.

I'VE HAVING BREAK PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR SINCE I FIRST BOUGHT USED. PRE OWNED CERTIFIED WITH THE DEALERSHIP. I'VE TOOK THE CAR IN A COUPLES SAYING THE BREAKS MAKE LOUD SQUEAKING NOISE AND PULSING EVERY TIME I HIT THE BREAK AND SOMETIMES DOESN'T STOP IMMEDIATELY. 'SCARY SITUATION'. THE SERVICE GUY LOOKS AT IT AND ALWAYS SAYS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. I TAKE IT BACK AND IT'S REPEAT ALL OVER AGAIN WITH SUPPOSEDLY NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BREAKS. I GAVE UP ON PLANET SUBARU DEALERSHIP AND DECIDED TO CHANGE THE BREAKS MYSELF TO SEE IF THAT CORRECT THE ISSUE. NOPE IT DIDN'T CORRECT THE ISSUE. MY BREAKS ARE STILL PULSING AND MAKING A LOUD SQUEAKING NOISE. I PUT NOISE FREE ON THE BREAKS AND STILL NOT HELPING, WHEN THE BREAKS START TO PULSES, THE BREAK GETS TIGHT AND WON'T STOP IMMEDIATELY. WINTER IS COMING AND I'M SURE THIS WILL BE THE DEATH OF ME. SUBARU NEEDS TO FIX THIS ISSUES. I'M SURE THERE WILL BE MORE COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS SOON. SUBARU CARS ARE NOT RELIABLE ANYMORE. I'M SCARED DRIVING THIS CAR WITH MY BREAK PROBLEMS AND SUBARU NOT WANTING TO FIX THE ISSUES. PURCHASED THE CAR APRIL 2018 AND NOW IT'S NOVEMBER 2018. THE LAST 7 MONTHS OF CONTINUOUS BREAK PROBLEMS.. There was no impact to the sunroof that could have caused the sunroof glass to explode. The shards of glass from the sunroof fell onto the contact, his wife, and his son; however, no injuries were sustained, and medical attention was not received. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who replaced the sunroof glass. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

The contact owns a 2015 Subaru Outback. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH and activating the windshield washer on intermittent mode, he noticed that the windshield was significantly dry as the washer mechanism was not supplying fluid to the windshield at the nozzle. The contact stated that as the failure impaired his visibility of the road, he veered to the side of the road. Upon investigating the failure, the contact discovered a puddle of fluid underneath the driver’s side fender of the vehicle and concluded there was a leak of windshield washer fluid through the windshield washer tubing. The contact manually cleaned the windshield and drove to his residence, where he noticed that the windshield washer tubing was fractured about 6 inches from the point at which it entered the cowl housing located at the base of the windshield. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 95,000.

The contact owns a 2015 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that she noticed that there was a crack on the passenger's side windshield after a small rock struck the windshield. The contact stated that the windshield shouldn't have cracked from such a small rock impacting the windshield. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 69,460.

The contact became aware that an unknown manufacturer recall was associated with the failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the manufacturer partially covered the windshield replacement; however, the failure reoccurred while driving. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.

Failure on multiple lug nuts due to rust and corroding bolts. The vehicle is mostly garaged, and exposed to the elements only when driven. For a < 68000 mile vehicle, this type of failure is on the higher side. Additionally, the lug nuts break when trying to open using company specific torque. The car regularly drains the battery. We are the original owners and have had to purchase 3 car batteries thus far. The car does not provide any warning messages or report any issues. Every time the battery has been drained it happens without explanation, over a dozen times since we’ve owned the car. We’ve always had the batteries inspected, and they’ve been in good contention with life left in them, just drained, needing a recharge. Unfortunately, the car counties to drain the battery, leaving me stranded, including at night away from home. The details for the incident I will be providing below will be for the most recent, this morning.

Excessive battery drain from open back hatch while parked and engine off. Having my back liftgate open while my engine was off for a 30 minute period drained my battery so that I could not start my vehicle. Had not my friends been there to jump me I would have been without transportation miles from home. No warning light was given by the vehicle. Others with this vehicle have had similar issues and it is an easy issue to find complaints about. A service center has not been contacted yet but I plan on speaking with my dealership soon. This problem blindsided me completely.

THERE IS A CRACK IN THE WINDSHIELD THAT SHOWED UP ABOUT 5 MONTHS AND HAS INCREASED IN SIZE. BEFORE BRINING IT TO THE DEALER (NAPOLEON SUBARU IN SCHAUMBURG, IL), I HAD THE VEHICLE CHECKED BY A LOCAL MECHANIC AND WAS TOLD THE CRACK WAS DUE TO THE FAULTY WINDSHIELD AND NOT BECAUSE OF ANY IMPACT. THERE HAS BEEN NO IMPACT TO THE WINDSHIELD TO MY KNOWLEDGE AND YET THE CRACK APPEARED AND HAS SPREAD. SUBARU DEALER SAID THAT THE CRACK MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY AN IMPACT BUT AGAIN I DON'T RECOLLECT ANY IMPACT THAT COULD CAUSE THIS. THE SUBARU DEALER SAID HE DID HIS PEN POINT CHECK AND THE CRACK WAS NOT CAUSED BY SUBARU'S FAULT. WHAT THE SUBARU DEALER TOLD ME ABOUT THE PEN POINT CHECK MAKES NO SENSE TO ME ESPECIALLY AS THERE HAS BEEN NO IMPACT TO MY WINDSHIELD. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT SUBARU AND THE DEALER ARE LYING ABOUT THE FAULTY WINDSHIELD AND ARE REFUSING TO REPLACE IT (WHICH I AM ASSUMING IS ALSO A FAULTY OEM PART). I HAVE OWNED SEVERAL CARS BEFORE AND I'VE NEVER HAD THIS ISSUE BEFORE. I REPEAT, NEVER BEFORE ON ANY CAR, ESPECIALLY A NEW CAR. I CHECKED WITH A LOCAL MECHANIC AND AGAIN, WAS TOLD THIS WAS LIKELY CAUSED BY FAULTY WINDSHIELD. EITHER TO AVOID ADMITTING FAULT OR TO AVOID PAYING FOR A RECALL FOR THIS ITEM OR FOR AVOIDING LIABILITY IN A LAWSUIT, I DON'T KNOW BUT I FEEL LIKE SUBARU IS DELIBERATELY LYING OR MISREPRESENTING THE FACTS ABOUT IT. I DON'T KNOW WHAT I SHOULD EXPECT FROM WRITING THIS COMPLAINT BUT I AM WRITING BECAUSE I AM EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS. WE WERE CONSIDERING A SUBARU FORRESTER FOR NEXT YEAR BUT I AM NOT GOING TO DO THAT NOW GIVEN HOW BADLY SUBARU IS TREATING ME ON THIS FAULT OF THEIRS. I SUSPECT SUBARU WILL NOT DO THE RIGHT THING DESPITE IT BEING SUBARU'S FAULT AT PUTTING IN A BAD WINDSHIELD AND INSTEAD PUSH THE COST TO THE CAR BUYERS. I CAN BE REACHED ON THE CELL AT [XXX]. THANKS. NAVIGATION SYSTEM SCREEN HAS SERIOUS GLARE DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS. ALMOST DROVE OFF ROAD INTO A DITCH YESTERDAY, WHILE TRYING TO SEE SCREEN. NO ONE ELSE ON ROAD. SYSTEM VIRTUALLY USELESS. ALSO SEVERE GLARE ON DRIVER-SIDE MIRROR FROM CAR INTERIOR, MAKES IT HARD TO SEE VEHICLES ON LEFT. SUBARU COULD FIX THIS PROBLEM WITH DESIGNING A PRE-CUT ANTI-GLARE SCREEN COVER OR SIMPLY REPLACING THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM SCREEN WITH A NEW ANTI-GLARE PLASTIC ONE. SOMEONE WILL EVENTUALLY GET HURT OR KILLED.

Within the last few months, my 2015 Outback has been unreliable with the fuel gauge indicator, causing me to run out of gas three times, stranded roadside, with supposedly 30 miles in rank. Fortunately, there were no accidents, but two out of three times, I was left stranded on highways, that put me at risk of being struck.

Our 2015 Subaru Outback occasionally accelerates sharply without the driver's foot being on the gas peddle. It always happens when decelerating and applying the brakes. Suddenly, the engine roars and revs up, all while the driver is depressing the brake pedal, desperately trying to bring the vehicle to a safe stop. In our case, we've always been able to stop without hitting anything, but we've had some near misses. It seems to happen in the winter. The Subaru dealer we purchased the vehicle from denies any knowledge of this particular problem, even though numerous drivers have reported similar incidents.

We called Subaru Roadside Assistance Sunday, July 25, 2021 because the Subaru lost power, as though it were out of gas, but the gage showed we had over an eighth of a tank. We mentioned this to the roadside assistant Rep. several times. She took our cell and credit card #s and said she ordered us a tow truck. I asked if the driver will have a gas can with. She said, "Well do you need a tow or fuel". Again we repeated we didn't know and explained again what happened. She said it would be 60-90 minutes. It was 94 degrees, we had no water, no shade, it was horrible. After 90 minutes still nobody came. We called again to see how much longer it would be. COME TO FIND OUT, THEY DIDN'T SEND ANYONE!!!. They said they didn't know if we needed a toe or fuel, so they didn't send anyone, didn't call, NOTHING. They said it would be another 90 minutes. We told them to forget it, hung up and went to a nearby house and the guy gave us a bottle of water and from a gas can, provided us enough gas to get to the next gas station 11 miles away. I tried calling subaru headquarters to report the issue and to let them know if our credit card was charged, they need to reimburse it since we did not receive service, but I was on hold for so long, I hung up and emailed them - 3 times and I NEVER heard anything back from them. So here I am reporting to not rely on their gas gage and reporting a safety concern that they would leave people in massive heat, probably would in the terrible cold as well. They do not call to let you know that nobody is coming. Subaru roadside assistance is one big joke. Subaru service is a big joke because obviously they don't care since they never responded to any of my emails. Needless to say, we will never call their roadside assistance again and will NEVER buy a subaru again since they have shown lack of interest. Thank you.

#1. I replaced the battery in June of 2022 after all the dash warning lights came on. My eyesight safety feature was rendered in operative. After the battery was replaced, all the warning lights eventually went out. In July of 2023 the same scenario happened again. I returned to Advance Auto retailer and the store manager checked the battery. She replaced the battery with a new one of greater cold cranking amps. she was most knowledgeable and extraordinarily gracious. I asked her to check the alternator for proper function and was told it was functioning as it should. #2. On June 07, 2023, I took the automobile in for service: oil and filter change and brake pads and rotors on all four wheels. My Subaru had 68,482 miles on this date. The technician (who previously was employed by a local Subaru dealership) noticed that the engine was leaking oil and diagnosed the timing cover gasket was leaking oil. Oil leaking would contribute to the bad smells entering the passenger compartment. The gasket and three seals were replaced at a cost of $1329.94 plus 8% tax. Online research reveals that Subaru"s boxer engine suffers chronic oil consumption and seal problems. Subaru of America relies on the consumer to eat any repairs rather than fix the problem that has been going on for years.
Aug 17, 2023
Oil consumption issues. The oil is burning more then it should. Oil light would come after 2 to 3 more after an oil change. The dealership has been notified and is working on ordering new parts for the engine. Replacing the small block of the engine. Had less the 100k miles when this problem accured. Electrical issues. The battery is being drained after the car is turned off. Car would not start in the morning and need to be jumped. Additionally, battery eventually dies and needs to be replaced. Dealership has been notified.

A transmission that was replaced in July of 2023 went bad un December of 2024 and dealership won't give reasons why transmission went bad or what caused a almost brand new transmission with less than 50,000 miles on it went bad. They are demanding we pay $5000.00 dollars on a transmission that was replaced under the extended warranty on cvt transmission from subaru. Which also extends to the brand new transmission. They are demanding their loaner car back and refusing to honor extended warranty on new transmission which the gave us which is bad. They will not give us anything other than it is bad. No information what so ever is being given to my husband or I as to why, how or what happened. My car will not move unless it is pushed by someone. They are refusing to honor their recall warranty or provide a loaner while dealing with their corporate offices on this issue. This is after in the past 1 and a half years my car has been in their shop for well over 8 months and I am still making payments on this vehicle. They will not even provide paperwork on the issues with my vehicle.

CONTINUOUS VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (CVT). THE VEHICLE STOPPED WHILE MAKING A LEFT TURN SUDDENLY MOTIONLESS, ENGINE REVVED UP AT 3500 RPM BUT THE CVT REMAINED UNRESPONSIVE. PACED SHIFT GEAR TO PARK POSITION THEN TO DRIVE GEAR THEN THE VEHICLE MOVED-UP VERY SLOW THEN IT PULLED FORWARD TO A NORMAL DRIVEABLE CONDITION. THIS ISSUE HAPPENED IN 2017, 2018, 2019. TOOK TO DEALERSHIP 2X TESTED THE VEHICLE BUT, NO PROBLEM FOUND AND NO MANUFACTURER'S ISSUE WAS RELEASE. SEVERAL SUBARU OWNERS COMPLAINTS WITH THE SAME ISSUE, ON 2013 - 2015 OUTBACK MODELS.THE BATTERY ON 2015 OUTBACK MODEL LIKE MINE, HAD REPLACED IN 2017 WHILE UNDER WARRANTY UP TO 3 - YEARS. LATELY, THE BATTERY DIED SEVERAL TIMES, TOOK BACK TO THE DEALER FOR TEST AND REPLACEMENT BUT, THE 3 - YEARS WARRANTY WAS OVER FROM ITS ORIGINAL PURCHASED. THE WARRANTY SHOULD BE APPLIED ON THE SECOND BATTERY REPLACEMENT THAT RUNS FOR THE NEXT 36 - MONTHS. ANOTHER ISSUE IS THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER THE VEHICLE HAS, TOOK BACK TO THE DEALER LAST JULY 2020, A SRVICE ADVISOR ADMITTED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM, THE VEHICLE DROVE FOR TESTING THEN CAME BACK WITH NOTHING WRONG ON THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER PER MECHANIC ASSESSMENT. THE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE WAS CRACKED AND IT WAS REPAIRED AS PART OF MANUFACTURER RECALLS. THERE ARE ISSUES ON THIS MODEL REFERRING TO THE CVT, BATTERY, INFOTAINMENT GOT FREEZED, NO DATA ON SCREEN, ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION TO FAST. THE MAIN ISSUE FOR ME IS THE "SAFETY ISSUE." WHICH IS THE TRANSMISSION. FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED WAS IN 2017, 2018, 2019.

RECEIVED SUBARU RECALL (WUJ-95) ON AUG,3.2020 PERTAINING TO EXHAUST PIPE BELLOW FAILURE. THE RECALL INCLUDES REPLACEMENT OF THE EXHAUST Y-PIPE THAT IS INSTALLED FROM ENGINE TO TALE PIPE. THIS EXHAUST PIPE IN MY UNDERSTANDING WAS INSTALLED UNDER A STRESS MANUFACTURING PROCESS WHERE THE PIPE AND FASTENER SYSTEM HAS TO BE FORCED IN TO INSTALL. THIS PUTS EXCESS STRESS ON THE BELLOWS AND CAUSED FAILURE. MY QUESTION IS WHY DID SUBARU WAIT FIVE YEARS TO NOTIFY THE CONSUMER AND ISSUE A RECALL. PLEASE RETURN MY REQUEST FOR A FULL EXPLANATION OF WHAT HAPPENED. 2ND. I WOULD LIKE TO ADDRESS THE CVT TRANSMISSION ISSUE. SUBARU EXTENDED THE TRANSMISSION FAILURE TIME LINE TO 10YR-100,000 MILE. I AM HAVING MANY ISSUES WITH MY CVT TRANSMISSION AND SUBARU WILL NOT ISSUE A RECALL. WITH ALL THE COMPLAINTS AND PROBLEMS WITH THE GEN-5 CVT TRANSMISSION WOULD PLEASE TAKE A 2ND LOOK AT THIS ISSUE.

I WAS GETTING GAS AT A STATION. WHEN I WAS FINISHED PUMPING GAS I ENTERED THE CAR, STARTED IT, PUT IT IN REVERSE, BRAKED, PUT IT IN DRIVE, IT ROLLED BACKWARDS, PUT ON THE BRAKE, IT CONTINUED TO ROLL BACKWARDS, GAVE IT SOME GAS SINCE IT WAS STILL IN DRIVE, CAR JUMPED FORWARD ALMOST HITTING CAR PARKED IN FRONT OF ME, MY FOOT WAS STILL ON BRAKE AND IN DRIVE WHILE I TRIED TO KEEP IT FROM ROLLING BACKWARDS. TRIED TO MANIPULATE BRAKE AND GAS TO STOP ROLLING BACKWARDS. EVENTUALLY I SWERVED AROUND PARKED CAR IN FRONT OF ME WITHOUT HITTING IT. THIS HAS HAPPENED 4 TIMES SINCE I PURCHASED NEW CAR. WINDSHIELD DEVELOPED A CRACK WITH NO NOTICEABLE IMPACT FROM DEBRIS. FIRST INCIDENT DECEMBER 1, 2014, WINDSHIELD REPLACED WITH IDENTICAL MODEL BY CARLEX (MINUS THE SUBARU OEM STICKER). THE REPLACEMENT WINDSHIELD HAS EXHIBITED THE SAME SYMPTOMS (DEVELOPED A CRACK WITH NO NOTICEABLE IMPACT) ON JANUARY 15, 2015. THIS SEEMS LIKE A SAFETY ISSUE FOR STRUCTURAL AND VISIBILITY REASONS. BOTH CRACKS BEGAN IN THE WINDSHIELD WIPER HEATER AREA. *TR

NOTICED AN 18 INCH CRACK IN MY 2015 SUBARU OUTBACK WINDSHIELD STARTING AT THE TOP UNDER THE HEATING ELEMENT TWO MONTHS AGO. WAS NOT HIT BY A ROCK AND NO IMPACT SPOT FOUND. HAD THE WINDSHIELD REPLACED THREE WEEKS AGO. WHILE DRIVING YESTERDAY, HEARD A CRACKING SOUND AND NOTICED A 12 INCH CRACK APPEAR IN THE LOWER LEFT (AGAIN, STARTING WHERE THE HEATING ELEMENT IS AND AGAIN, NO ROCK SOUND OR IMPACT SPOT). MY SISTER HAS THE EXACT SAME CAR WITH A CRACK IN THE *EXACT* SAME SPOT THAT DEVELOPED LAST WEEK OUT OF THE BLUE (I HAVE PHOTOS OF BOTH OF OUR CRACKS FOR COMPARISON). FROM DOING RESEARCH, IT SEEMS THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH SUBARU WINDSHIELDS (WWW.SUBARUOUTBACK.ORG HAS SEVERAL FORUM THREADS DETAILING SIMILAR REPORTS). *TR

THIS CAR HAS A SCREEN IN THE DASHBOARD THAT CONTROLS THE STEREO, PHONE, AND OTHER FUNCTIONS. IT HAS A VERY REFLECTIVE GLASSY FINISH. THE SCREEN IS NOT SURROUNDED BY A HOOD OF ANY SORT AND IT IS TITLED AT ABOUT A 50-DEGREE ANGLE. ON OTHER OCCASIONS, I HAVE NOTICED THAT THIS SCREEN REFLECTS A LOT OF SUNLIGHT, BUT IT WAS MORE OF AN ANNOYANCE THAN ANYTHING. ON THIS OCCASION, I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AT ABOUT 1:30 IN THE AFTERNOON, GOING EAST ON A HIGHWAY. THE DASHBOARD SCREEN WAS REFLECTING THE SUN INTO MY EYES SO DIRECTLY THAT IT WAS PAINFUL. IT WAS ALSO DISTRACTING. THE LIGHT WAS SO BRIGHT AND SO CONSISTENT THAT I HAD TO DRIVE WHILE HOLDING MY RIGHT HAND IN FRONT OF THE SCREEN TO BLOCK THE LIGHT. I HAD TO DRIVE THAT WAY FOR PROBABLY HALF AN HOUR. I DID NOT HAVE ANY SORT OF "ACCIDENT." HOWEVER, I CAN FORESEE THAT UNDER THE WRONG CIRCUMSTANCES, THIS CHARACTERISTIC OF THE CAR COULD BLIND OR DISTRACT A DRIVER FROM SEEING OTHER TRAFFIC, TRAFFIC SIGNALS, ETC. AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. IT COULD ALSO CAUSE SOMEONE TO KEEP ONE HAND OFF THE WHEEL AND MAYBE CAUSE AN ACCIDENT THAT WAY. IT IS MY OPINION THAT THIS CHARACTERISTIC OF THE CAR SHOULD BE ADDRESSED. *TR

My sunroof glass just shattered spontaneously while I was driving. Thankfully the door was closed or me and my daughter would have been showered by glass while in the road. Nothing hit the car , I just heard a loud bang over my heard and when I stopped to see what happened my sunroof was in pieces!
Jan 20, 2025
While driving on 55mph road, sunroof suddenly shattered for no apparent reason (no sudden impact from rock or other debris), producing a loud bang, startling driver. Driver momentarily swerved due to being startled by noise from next to head before correcting. No other cars were around on the road at the time and driver is sure no rocks or other objects fell onto sunroof (covered by rooftop cargo box, no trees near street to drop debris). Pieces of glass went upwards and ended up on roof of vehicle.

THERE WERE NO OTHER VEHICLES AROUND AND THERE WAS NO IMPACT FROM FOREIGN OBJECTS. THERE WAS A LOUD, DISTRACTING, BANG FOLLOWED BY A CLOUD OF SHATTERED GLASS COMING FROM THE BACK OF THE CAR. THE SUNROOF COVER WAS CLOSED AND THE TEMPERED GLASS FRAGMENTS COLLECTED IN THE WELL AND RATTLED AROUND FOR THE REMAINING 3 1/2 HOURS OF OUR JOURNEY.

I HAVE A SURGING ISSUE WITH MY 3.6R AFTER COLD STARTS. UPON START-UP, THE IDLE WILL BE ~1800 AND WHEN I PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE, IT WILL DROP TO 800-1000RPM. THEN, AS I SLOWLY PULL INTO THE GARAGE, OR PULL INTO A STOPPED LINE OF TRAFFIC, THE ENGINE WILL SURGE BACK TO THE HIGHER RPM, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO PUSH THROUGH THE BRAKES. I HAVE HAD THIS RETURN TO HIGH IDLE OCCUR AFTER I HAVE COME TO A COMPLETE STOP, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO PUSH THROUGH THE APPLIED BRAKES AND REQUIRING ADDITIONAL BRAKE PRESSURE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. I HAVE ALSO HAD IT OCCUR WHEN SLOWLY ROLLING FORWARD. I BELIEVE THIS IS AN UNSAFE SITUATION THAT COULD RESULT IN DAMAGED PROPERTY AND/OR INJURY. I SEE THAT THERE IS AT LEAST ONE ADDITIONAL NHTSA COMPLAINT FOR THIS ISSUE, WHICH SUBARU DEEMED "NORMAL" OPERATION. I DID CONTACT MY DEALER REQUESTING A FIRMWARE UPDATE, IF ONE WAS AVAILABLE, AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NOT ONE. I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE SINCE 3/23/2015 AND THIS ISSUE HAS OCCURRED SINCE NEW, BUT IT MORE COMMON IN COLDER WEATHER. I HAVE 18K MILES ON THE VEHICLE.

While driving at highway speed and traveling over about 6 hours, the car simply shut off. We were traveling on the highway in the passing lane. Without warning the car began to slow down rapidly, no dash lights on, but the engine was off. We managed to cross two lanes of traffic without power assist and once on the shoulder and slowing down, the engine lights all came on. Once fully stopped, we turned the car off, waited a few seconds and restarted. We were then able to complete our trip without difficulty. This has happened twice. The dealer has done full diagnostics twice but has been unable to find the problem. We have heard that other year Subaru outbacks have been recalled for this problem but our year isn't included.

THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH THE 3.6R ENGINE AND A CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION. WHEN DESCENDING A LONG HILL IN A FIXED GEAR RATIO (USUALLY 2ND OR 3RD) THE VEHICLE SLOWS NORMALLY UNTIL THE RPM REACHES APPROXIMATELY 1200 RPM AT WHICH POINT THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY BEGINS ACCELERATING UNTIL THE RPM REACHES APPROXIMATELY 2500 RPM AT WHICH POINT THE PROCESS REPEATS. I OBSERVE THE "MPG" SUDDENLY DROP AT THE SAME TIME TO AROUND 25 MPG WHEN THE VEHICLE ACCELERATES. IT RISES BACK TO "99" WHEN IT SLOWS. NOTE THAT DURING THE ENTIRE SEQUENCE MY FOOT IS OFF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND THE THROTTLE ANGLE DISPLAY SHOWS ZERO. I FIND THIS VERY HAZARDOUS AS THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION CAN OCCUR WHEN ENTERING OR WITHIN A TURN CREATING A CRASH RISK. UPADTE 9/15/15*CW

ON FEBRUARY 25 I WAS DRIVING MY SUBARU ON A CITY STREET AND TRAVELING ABOUT 40 MPH. I NOTICED THAT A TRAFFIC LIGHT AHEAD OF ME WOULD BE TURNING RED SO I TRIED TO SLOW DOWN. THE POWER BRAKES DID NOT WORK AT ALL. NOT ONLY DID THE POWER BRAKES GO OUT BUT THE CAR BEGAN TO ACCELERATE ON IT'S OWN. I LOOKED AROUND FOR OPTIONS AND DECIDED I COULD TURN OFF INTO A PARKING LOT. THE BRAKES (NOT THE POWER BRAKES BUT THE BACK UP SYSTEM BRAKES) GRABBED JUST ENOUGH TO SLOW ME DOWN SO THAT I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF SAFELY INTO THE PARKING LOT. I DROVE THROUGH THE PARKING LOT TO A PLACE WITH NO CARS AND WAS FINALLY ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO STOP. AS I PUT THE CAR IN PARK THE ENGINE RPMS REVVED UP TO 4000 SO THE CAR ENGINE WAS OBVIOUSLY STILL TRYING TO PROPEL THE CAR. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND CALLED MY HUSBAND. WHEN HE CAME, HE GOT INTO THE CAR AND CHECKED THINGS LIKE THE CAR MAT POSITION WHICH WAS IN THE CORRECT PLACE. HE STARTED THE CAR AND IT WAS AS IF THE CAR HAD GOT IT'S BRAIN BACK. HE DROVE IT IMMEDIATELY TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG BUT DID UPDATE OUR COMPUTER SYSTEM. WE HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS SINCE THEN.

I DRIOVE OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY ONE BLOCK TO STOP SIGN. ONLY GOING 10 OR SO MPH WHEN I DEPRESSED BRAKE TO STOP AT STOP SIGN . POWER BRAKES DID NOT RESPOND UNTIL PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED HARD TO FLOOR. THEN WHEN STOPPED THE ENGINE REVED UP AND I DID NOT TAKE MY FOOT OFF BRAKE. THE ENGINE SEEMED TO ROAR LIKE IN A VERY LOW GEAR. I CHECKED GEARS AND PUT IT IN NEUTRAL, THEN PARK AND REVERSE, ENGINE STILL ROARING. BUT AS MY FOOT WAS HARD ON BRAKE, IT DID NOT GO INTO FOUR LANE TRAFFIC AHEAD. I TURNED OFF ENGINE WITH KEY AND THE ENGINE REVING STOPPED..WHEN I TURNED THE CAR ON AGAIN THE BRAKES WORKED NORMALLY AND ACCELERATION WAS NORMAL .IT SEEMED TO RESET AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE IT TO SUBARU DEALER FOR REPAIRS ALBEIT VERY SLOWLY. I PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE HAD IT TOWED. THERE ARE NO FLOOR MATS IN THE CAR. DRIVER NOT IMPAIRED. THIS OCCURRED AROUND 10 AM ON A CLEAR AUGUST DAY TEMPERATURE AROUND 75 DEGREES .

THIS CONCERNS A 2015 SUBARU OUTBACK LIMITED 6 CYLINDER. AT APPROX 21,000 MI I WAS SLOWING TO SPEED TO PARK IN A PUBLIC PARKING SPACE ON A CITY STREET AND THE OUTBACK SUDDEN ACCELERATION. PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT I'VE ALSO EXPERIENCED SLIGHT HESITATION IN ACCELERATION WHEN I FIRST ACCELERATE FROM A STATIONARY POSITION AND PROBABLY UNRELATED, THE GEAR SHIFT OFTEN GETS STUCK IN PARK AND I HAVE TO USE FORCE THE GEAR SHIFT TO REVERSE. There's a problem in a part called (clock spring/roll connector) that is responsible for the horn on steering wheel. It affects almost all Subaru models, like Outback, Forester, Legacy... I've verified it in a mechanic shop, and after all the tests of fuses, horn, and everything. They say the problem is the clock spring, a part that goes after the air bag and costs around $130 plus service ($150 minimum) to change. Then I research on internet and found out it's a very common problem with a lot of videos on YouTube of people having the same issue and a lot of comments there of more people complaining about it that it should have a recall cause it's a security part. I couldn't use my horn when another driver almost hit me, that's how I figured out that my horn died. Those are just some of the videos with this related problem. There's a lot more on YouTube and a lot of posts on Internet forums as well: https://youtu.be/E73ao9zRCUM https://youtu.be/vDxvafmQ6Qg https://youtu.be/plbtVX2WZWw https://youtu.be/YIwl5AmhfQ0 https://youtu.be/ZR5Qq3zufRc

THE ENTIRE CENTER PANEL OF CONTROLS (RADIO, NAVIGATION, CLIMATE CONTROL, ETC.) WAS DISABLED. WE ARE CONCERNED BECAUSE THE EYESIGHT SYSTEM CONTROLS BRAKING, ACCELERATION, ETC. THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATION IS ALSO A CONCERN. WE HAVE SEEN THAT OTHER SUBARU OWNERS ARE REPORTING SIMILAR CHRONIC ISSUES WITH THEIR NEW SIMILARLY CONFIGURED VEHICLES. *TR

I have read other posts regarding same issue and the run around the dealer mechanics give to it’s customers. My car is available for inspection anytime if I do not incur a service charge!

The contact owns a 2015 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that while driving 67 MPH with the cruise control activated, the vehicle suddenly decelerated to approximately 25-30 MPH while depressing the brake pedal. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled. After pulling over to the side of the roadway, the contact was able to restart the vehicle and drove to the residence. The vehicle was taken to the dealer however, the cause of the failure could not be determined. The contact's wife stated that the failure had occurred a year prior while driving approximately 55 MPH. The failure only lasted for several seconds. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,700.

The contact owns a 2015 Subaru Outback. The contact stated while driving at 20 mph, the brakes would not engage as the brake pedal was depressed. As a result, the vehicle rear-ended a parked vehicle on the side of the road. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was not filed. Three of the passengers in the vehicle sustained head and neck injuries that required medical treatment. The vehicle was drivable and was taken to a local dealer where it has been for 5 months. The vehicle was diagnosed with nothing needing to be replaced. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer to have the engineers look at the vehicle. The failure mileage was 56,000.

I WAS GOING 55 MPH ON A STRAIGHT FLAT SURFACE WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE RPM'S SHOT UP TO AROUND 4000 BUT THE CAR WAS NOT ACCELERATING. IT WAS LIKE IT WENT INTO NEUTRAL. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THE CAR PROCEEDED TO DIE. FORTUNATELY, IT STARTED RIGHT UP AND I DROVE HOME. I HAD A ALMOST A FULL TANK OF GAS. I HAD ONLY DRIVEN IT FOR 5 MINUTES AS I WAS ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK. I JUST HAD THE OIL/FILTER CHANGED NOT EVEN 2 MONTHS AGO. I HAVE 54,000 DEALER SERVICED MILES ON THE CAR. WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD, THE IDLE SPEED IS 1600 RPM WHEN STARTED. WHEN PLACED IN REVERSE OR DRIVE IT REDUCES TO A NOMINAL 900-1000 RPM. WHEN THE VEHICLE STARTS TO MOVE IT SUDDENLY DROPS TO 600 RPM. WHEN BRAKING TO A STOP AFTER MOVING VEHICLE THE RPM SUDDENLY JUMPS TO 900-1000 RPM JUST BEFORE VEHICLE HALTS. THIS CAUSES SUDDEN UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION OF THE VEHICLE AND PRESENTS A SAFETY HAZARD. I BELIEVE THIS IS DUE TO AN ENGINE/TRANSMISSION SOFTWARE ISSUE. THIS HAS OCCURRED SINCE NEW. UPDATED 9/15/15*CW UPDATED 11/07/2017*CN

WHEN I PRESSED THE BUTTON TO START THE CAR ONLY THE RADIO STARTED AND THE MESSAGE FLASHED KEYLESS START UP DEACTIVATED SEE MANUAL. I SAW THE MANUAL COULD, JUST ABOUT UNDERSTAND IT, DID WHAT IT TOLD ME NOTHING CHANGED. I CALLED ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AT SUBARU AND THE LADY SAID IT WAS MY BATTERY EVEN THOUGH I TOLD HER WHAT THE MESSAGE SAID ON THE SCREEN. SHE SENT SOMEONE TO JUMP THE BATTERY .WHEN HE ARRIVED 50 MINUTES LATER THE CAR STARTED PERFECTLY. I CALLED SUBARU SERVICE AT MY DEALERSHIP ,THAT I HAVE USED SINCE 1979. THE PERSON I SPOKE TO SAID HE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT IT. I LOOKED ON LINE AT THE SUBARU FORUM AND FOUND OTHERS EXPERIENCING THE SAME OR SIMILAR MESSAGE. I AM INCLUDING THEIR WEBSITE HTTP://WWW.SUBARUOUTBACK.ORG/FORUMS/66-PROBLEMS-MAINTENANCE/220162-2015-OUTBACK-NOT-STARTING. I WANT TO KNOW IF THE CAR RESETS ITSELF. HELLO, MY WINDSHIELD BROKE ABOUT 6 MONTHS AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE. I DON'T KNOW HOW OR WHY. IT WAS JUST BROKEN ONE MORNING WHEN I WENT OUT TO MY CAR. I FIGURED A ROCK OR SOMETHING HIT IT. THERE WAS NO RECALL AT THE TIME AND SO I HAD IT REPLACED WITH A OEM WINDSHIELD. MY SECOND WINDSHIELD JUST BROKE A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO WHILE CHANGING MY WIPERS YOU CAN SEE WHERE THE CERAMIC WIPER HEATER DELAMINATED INSIDE OF THE WINDSHIELD. IT TURNED BRIGHT RED. I HAVE OWNED ALOT OF CARS AND NEVER SEEN A WINDSHIELD THAT IS SO FRAGILE. I HAVE CHANGED MANY, MANY WIPER BLADES AND I KNOW WHAT A QUALITY WINDSHIELD IS. I SET THE WIPER BLADE HOLDER DOWN ON THE WINDSHIELD GENTLY AND IT CRACKED, THE CRACK GREW ACROSS THE WINDSHIELD IN A DAY OR SO. RIDICULOUS. THESE WINDSHIELDS RUN ABOUT 500 BUCKS AND SHOULD BE BETTER QUALITY. I ALSO HAVE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS WHERE MY CAR CLOCK WILL NOT SET... CURRENTLY. IT TOOK THEM 3 YEARS TO FIGURE OUT THE STEERING RETAINING PIN WAS BROKEN EVEN THOUGH I WAS COMPLAINING ABOUT IT SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR. THE REAR GATE STOPPED OPENING AND THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE STRUTS ON A 3 YEAR OLD CAR. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE FRONT END BUT MY DEALER SAID "WAIT UNTIL IT GETS WORSE" CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT? THANKS,

PURCHASED THE 2015 OUTBACK IN SEPT. 2014. TOOK TO BACK TO DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPT. OCTOBER. 24, 2014 BECAUSE OF LOUD POPPING NOISE AROUND WINDSHIELD ESPECIALLY WHEN BLUETOOTH PHONE CONNECTED. THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY PROBLEMS. POPPING NOISE AROUND WINDSHIELD CONTINUED FROM TIME TO TIME. TOOK BACK TO DEALER JULY 29, 2015 FOR POPPING NOISE AROUND WINDSHIELD AND POOR RADIO AM RECEPTION. THEY REPLACED THE RADIO BUT AM RADIO RECEPTION STILL NOT GREAT. GOT IN THE OUTBACK ON NOV 17, 2015 AND THERE WAS A 5" CRACK ON THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDSHIELD SLIGHTLY RIGHT OF THE CENTER. A COUPLE OF WEEKS BEFORE THIS I WAS DRIVING AND HEARD A VERY LOUD POPPING NOISE. IT MADE ME JUMP AS I THOUGHT THE WINDSHIELD WAS GOING TO SHATTER BUT NOTHING HAPPENED. I HAD RECEIVED A LETTER FROM SUBARU ABOUT WINDSHIELD CRACKING PROBLEMS SO I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP. I TOOK IT IN SO THEY COULD TAKE A PICTURE. AT THAT TIME I ALSO REPORTED PROBLEMS WITH THE DEFROSTER NOT KEEPING THE WINDSHIELD CLEAR ESPECIALLY ON RAINY DAYS AND NIGHTS. THIS PROBLEM WITH THE DEFROSTER HAS OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES AND IT WAS I THE LOWER PORTION OF THE WINDSHIELD. I THOUGHT THE SUBARU HAD ELECTRICAL L ISSUES BECAUSE OF THE POPPING, POOR AM RADIO RECEPTION AND THE DEFROSTER. NOW THE WINDSHIELD! THIS IS MY FIRST SUBARU AND POSSIBLY LAST IF THE PROBLEMS PERSIST. ALL OF THE INCIDENTS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING BUT WHEN I DISCOVERED THE CRACK IT WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE. CRACK US NOW ABOUT 9".

DOWNHILL FREEWAY CLOVERLEAF ON RAMP, IMPOSSIBLE TO NEGOTIATE SAFELY WITH LOW BEAM.. DEPTH OF FIELD 20 TO 25 FEET, EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. LIGHTS JUST CUT OFF RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU. HAVE TO TURN ON HIGH BEAM TO SEE... ALSO LIGHTS DO NOT LIGHT UP THE SIDES OF ROADS VERY WELL, WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO SEE WILDLIFE VERY WELL. LIMITED VISIBILITY TURNING CORNERS IN RESIDENTIAL DRIVING, HARD TO SEE PEDESTRIANS AT SIDE CROSSWALKS. HARD TO SEE PROJECTED PATH.. The contact owns a 2015 Subaru Outback. The contact stated while the vehicle was at the dealer for an oil change and snow tire replacement, the contact was informed that the sub frame and the brake lines were severely corroded and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to a second dealer, 802 Toyota (30 Berlin Mall Rd, Berlin, VT 05602) for a Trade-In, and it was confirmed that the sub frame was corroded during the appraisal inspection. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the failure was caused by salt damage; however, the contact stated that the vehicle was used for leisure rather than commute since the contact was retired. The failure mileage was 86,801.

The clock spring (steering roll connector) component has failed, confirmed by the resulting complete loss of the horn function. SAFETY HAZARD: The component failure has resulted in the loss of the electrical connection to the Driver's Airbag System, rendering the primary airbag inoperable. This creates an unreasonable, life-threatening risk in the event of a collision. The problem has been diagnosed based on common failure patterns for this vehicle platform and confirmed via manufacturer correspondence. The problem first occurred on or about [Input Approximate Date] with the simultaneous failure of the horn and subsequent inoperability of the driver's airbag. The manufacturer, Subaru of America (SOA Case #251013-1700910), was contacted and acknowledged the concern but refused to cover the repair under a Goodwill Adjustment, citing an expired warranty, despite the component's direct link to the critical airbag safety system

I was within the town limits so I was driving slowly. When I approached the first stop light in town I saw that it was red. There were of three or four vehicles stopped at that light. At that point I was probably only going 5mph. I took my foot off of the gas pedal and put my foot on the brake to make a slow stop. Instead, the car accelerated rather quickly. I continued to brake but the car seemed to speed up. I was able to avoid hitting the truck in front of me by going around it. No vehicles were coming towards me but there were some stopped at the other side of the light. I drove up on the sidewalk to avoid hitting anyone. At that point the front passenger side of the car hit & snapped a pole. The car did not stop immediately upon impact. It stopped acclerating and came to a stop about 10 feet past the pole. I am not sure how fast the car was moving when it hit the pole but I was only going about 5 mph when I put my foot on the break. I would estimate the distance my car traveled from the moment I put my foot on the break until the car stopped was approximately 100-120 feet. It felt like the car went into the cruise resume mode and was trying to accelerate to a predetermined speed. I had not been using the cruise control that day but that is exactly what it felt like. There was one other time this year that the car lunged forward without using the gas pedal. It stopped quickly for me and I just assumed that I had hit the cruise resume button, although I also hadn't been using the cruise that day. The insurance company took the car to an impound lot two hours away. I am sure there has been no inspection and my insurance has not informed me of the status of having my car totaled or repaired. Because of the age of the car, and damage, they think it will be totaled. Yes, my safety and the safety of anyone near me was at risk. The car malfunctioned and the fact no one was hurt was miraculous. There were no warning messages before this accident.

The front subframe on my 2015 subaru 3.6r has rapidly rusted in a few years to the point of a safety concern. The vehicle is lightly driven, with 91,000 miles on it after almost 10 years. We live in the Northeast. I take this car in for regular inspections and service every six months and the service center I work with has not alerted me of any issues until this past march when they found the subframe almost completely rotted in the middle. Subaru has had similar issues subject to recalls for the rear subframe. Notably, my rear subframe does not have this issue. Evidence is available that this is exact issue is happening to many cars in this generation, found upon scanning forums such as reddit [XXX] and the subaruoutback.org owners forum [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The clock spring that controls the steering wheel, horn and other electrical accessories doesn’t work. This put my life and family’s lives at risk. This is a known issue for Subarus 2015-2019. There’s multiple videos online, I have spoken to multiple owners personally that have encountered the same issue. I spoke to the Subaru dealer and they said due to no recall has been issued for the vin number of my vehicle they can’t replace it and it cost about $1,000 dls. We need the NHTSA to step in and ask Subaru to issue a recall to start replacing the defective units at no cost to the owner.

Driver's seat started peeling off approximately a year after purchase. Notified dealer, they said to contact Subaru of America via social media. Now almost all peeled off, have to cover with towel possibly interfering with airbags. Steering column lock will not lock in top position. Dealer repaired once under warranty, now out of warranty. Unsafe when column moves when driving. Transmission started slipping or behaving strangely around 90,000 miles. Never received notice of extended warranty I read about on Subaru forums [XXX] ) Paid $531.43 for fluid change at dealership because of the problem on 7/27/23 and no mention was made about extended warranty. It has not solved the problem. If transmission fails, that is a safety problem. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

MY MECHANIC TOOK APART MY ENGINE AND DISCOVERED LOOSE SEALS THAT HAD ALLOWED MANY PARTS TO RUST OVER INCLUDING BROKEN BRACKETS AND A TORQUE CONVERTER. WARRANTY WON'T COVER ANY RUST BUT DID COVER THE $84 BROKEN SEAL. I SPENT CLOSE TO $3,000 ON REPAIRS AND A NEW BATTERY THEN. I WAS INITIALLY QUOTED FROM THE DEALERSHIP $6K. MY ONLY SALVATION IS TO SQUEEZE OUT OR HIT THE POSITION BUTTON ON THE DOOR PANEL. ALSO, THE PRESETS GO OUT ALL THE TIME. I HAVE ASKED IF THEY COULD DISABLE THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR SENSOR. NOTHING. REAR GATE OPENING: IT HAS HAPPENED SO MANY TIMES. I HAVE COMPLAINED DIRECTLY TO SUBARU ABOUT THE SEAT AND GATE PROBLEM. NO RESULTS. THE REAR GATE HAS OPENED WHILE RAINING OUTSIDE DURING THE NIGHT. IT HAS OPENED WHILE IN THE GARAGE JAMMING THE OVERHEAD GARAGE DOOR. I AM AFRAID ON TRIPS TO HAVE STUFF STOLEN OUT OF MY CAR IS SUCH AN INCIDENT. HAPPENED ONCE. ALSO... THEY HAVE A CUTE PRESET SO YOU CAN SET THE MAX HEIGHT OF THE GATE OPENING. TWICE MY WIFE HAS WALKED INTO THE REAR GATE AND LITERALLY FLIPPED BACKWARDS TO THE PAVEMENT! SUBARU DENIES ANY PROBLEMS ABOUT THE GATE. FUNNY, ONE DAY I WAS HELPING A FRIEND AND HER MOM WAS THERE. AS THEY HELPED ME UNLOAD MY SUBARU WE DISCOVERED THAT MOM HAD ALSO A SIMILAR MODEL. THE FIRST QUESTION SHE ASKED ME "HAVE YOU ANY PROBLEM WITH YOUR REAR GATE"!!! IT'S NOT JUST ME. SUBSTANTIAL RUST HAS DEVELOPED AT THE ATTACH POINT OF THE DRIVER'S SEAT-BELT TO THE DRIVER'S SEAT AND OF THE ATTACH-POINT OF THE DRIVER'S SEAT TO THE CAR. WE'RE THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND THE CAR WAS NEVER FLOODED OR EXPOSED TO WATER IN ANY OTHER WAY. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER TWO WEEKS AGO AND THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO MAKE OF IT OR DO ABOUT IT. THEY REACHED OUT TO SUBARU AND (AS OF 4/24) THE DEALER HASN'T RECEIVED A RESPONSE. THE PASSENGER SIDE DOESN'T HAVE THIS PROBLEM, BUT THE DESIGN IS ENTIRELY DIFFERENT -- NO EXPOSED METAL. INTERESTINGLY, WHEN THE SERVICE ADVISOR CHECKED OTHER LATER-YEAR GEN 5 OUTBACKS THE DESIGN HAD CHANGED: THERE WAS NO LONGER ANY EXPOSED METAL IN THE EQUIVALENT LOCATION. THE NEWER DESIGN FOR THE DRIVER-SIDE ATTACH-POINT MIMICS THE PASSENGER SIDE - NO EXPOSED METAL. A 2016 OUTBACK IN FOR SERVICE HAD THE SAME EXPOSED METAL DESIGN ON THE DRIVER-SIDE SEAT. IT ALSO HAD RUSTING AT THE SAME LOCATION (ALTHOUGH NOT NEARLY AS SEVERE AS ON MINE). IT DOES NOT SEEM SAFE TO HAVE THIS KIND OF RUST AT SUCH A KEY ATTACH-POINT FOR THE SEAT AND A CRITICAL SAFETY DEVICE LIKE A SEATBELT. WE LIVE IN A WARM/TEMPERATE PART OF CALIFORNIA AND THE CAR HAS ALWAYS BEEN "HOMED" IN PART OF CALIFORNIA, SO IT HAS NOT BEEN EXPOSED TO HARSH WEATHER.

IT'S HAPPENING AGAIN AND AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR SINCE THE DEALER WILL SAY NOTHING IS WRONG WITH THE CAR. IT LOOKS LIKE IT'S RELATED TO IDLE BEING LOW OR THE CVT ACTING UP WHEN TAKING THE FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL AND TRY TO ACCELERATE FROM A DEAD STOP OR COASTING TO A STOP. THIS HAPPENED A FEW TIMES DURING FACTORY WARRANTY WINDOW.

PLEASE READ UPLOAD DOCUMENTS. MY 2015 SUBARU OUTBACK BEGAN SHOWING SIGNS OF EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION IN THE SUMMER 2018. APPARENTLY THIS WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH SUBARU AND CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT WAS FILED AGAINST SUBARU FOR MODELS MADE PRIOR TO 2015. MY VEHICLE FAILED A OIL CONSUMPTION TEST IN THE FALL OF 2018. I WAS TOLD BY WHITE BEAR SUBARU IF THE VEHICLE FAILED AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST SUBARU OF AMERICA WOULD PAY TO HAVE A NEW SHORT BLOCK INSTALLED DUE TO THIS ONGOING ENGINE DEFECT. HOWEVER, SUBARU OF AMERICA REFUSED TO PAY THE FULL AMOUNT TO HAVE A NEW SHORT BLOCK INSTALLED AS EVEN THOUGH MY CAR WAS MAKE IN 2014 IT IS TECHNICALLY A 2015 THAT THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT ONLY PROTECTED CONSUMERS OF MODELS PRIOR TO 2015. ALSO, IN THE FALL OF 2018 THE INTERIOR OF THIS VEHICLE BEGAN TO HAVE A EXHAUST SMELL AND WAS MAKING ME FEEL SICK. THEY DETERMINED THAT PART OF THE EXHAUST SYSTEM WAS BROKEN BUT TOLD ME NOT TO HAVE IT FIXED BEFORE THE NEW SHORT BLOCK WAS INSTALLED AND THE EXHAUST SYSTEM WOULD JUST BECOME CLOGGED WITH THE OIL THE CAR WAS BURNING. I WENT AHEAD HAD HAD THE REPAIR DONE ANYWAY AS THE EXHAUST AIR WAS TERRIBLE.

EXHAUST SYSTEM ISSUE. EXHAUST MAINFOLD LEAK AT CATALYST CONVERTER. FOR OUR OUTBACK WE NOTICED A SIGNIFICANT LEVELS OF EXHAUST FUMES IN PASSENGER CABIN. THEY WERE NO INDICATION OF FAILURE OF EXHAUST SYSTEM OR CATALYST CONVERTER ON THE CAR. BUT WE ARE GETTING SOME MUCH FUMES SMELL WHEN WE STOPPED AT THE TRAFFIC SIGNAL OR PARKING LOT. IT ALL MOST MADE US SICK. LUCKILY I GOT IT CHECKED AT THE SERVICE CENTER AND THEY FIND THE LEAK. THIS IS POTENTIALLY A VERY RISKY THING FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T NOTICE THE SMELL MIGHT GET SLOW POISONED WITH CARBON MONOXIDE OR OTHER ELEMENTS IN EXHAUST FUMES. THERE MAY BE DIRECT INJURY FROM THIS ISSUE BUT AS I SAID I WAS ALMOST GOT SICK BECAUSE OF FUMES. FOR PEOPLE WITH PZEV VEHICLE, THE EXHAUST SYSTEM IS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. PLEASE BRING THIS ISSUE WITH MANUFACTURING. FOR PEOPLE OUT THERE IF YOU NOTICE A LOUD EXHAUST NOTE AT START OF YOUR VEHICLE OR SMALL RATTLING NOISE WHEN WE YOU ACCELERATE AFTER A COMPLETE STOP, IT MIGHT BE YOUR EXHAUST SYSTEM, PLEASE GET IT CHECKED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. PS ATTACHED IS THE DIAGNOSIS REPORT FROM DEALER SERVICE CENTER BE SAFE OUT THERE !! THANK YOU.

AFTER 2 YEARS OF OWNERSHIP ON MY BRAND NEW SUBARU OUTBACK 2015, I HAVE NOTICED A LOUD SQUEAKY SOUND COMING FROM THE ENGINE WHEN I START MY CAR AFTER IT RAINED/SNOWED. THE SOUND WOULD GO AWAY AFTER A FEW MINUTES, HOWEVER, IT DIDN'T SEEM NORMAL. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT NOTHING IS WRONG AND IT IS PERFECTLY FINE. HOWEVER, THE SQUEAKY NOISE STILL OCCURS AFTER RAIN/SNOW. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT WATER IS LEAKING INTO A BELT WHEN IT'S NOT SUPPOSE TO AND IT IS CAUSING THE NOISE WHEN THE ENGINE IS STARTED. SUBARU NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE BECAUSE THIS PROBLEM ONLY HAPPENS AFTER IT RAINS/SNOWS AND CANNOT BE REPLICATED WHEN THE CAR IS BROUGHT TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEREFORE, IT IS HARD TO HAVE THIS ISSUE FIXED.

OCTOBER 1, 2016 11:50AM, 32,00MILES SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION (SUA) MY WIFE HAD AN ACCELERATION AND BRAKE MALFUNCTION ON THIS DATE AND TIME.SHE HAD JUST TURNED INTO A PARKING LOT AND ATTEMPTED TO TURN INTO A PARKING SPACE. AS SHE TOOK HER FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR AND APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE, THE CAR ACCELERATED AND THE BRAKE WOULD NOT FUNCTION. THE CAR RAN OVER THE YELLOW CEMENT BARRIER AND WAS HEADING FOR A TREE, SHE CONTINUED TO APPLY PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE AND IT DID NOT RESPOND AS SHE TURNED THE CAR RIGHT TO MISS THE TREE. REALIZING SHE MAY BE HEADING FOR THE STREET SHE TURNED HARD RIGHT, STILL APPLYING PRESSURE TO A UNRESPONSIVE BRAKE PEDAL. SHE CONTINUED TO STEER HARD RIGHT TO MISS A FIRE HYDRANT. SHE LEFT TIRE MARKS IN THE BARK CHIPS NEAR THE HYDRANT. THE BRAKE FINALLY ENGAGED AND THE CAR CAME TO A STOP IN FRONT OF ANOTHER CEMENT PARKING BARRIER THAT WAS PERPENDICULAR TO THE STREET. SHE SAT FOR APPROXIMATELY A MINUTE, GATHERING HER THOUGHTS AND TALKING TO HER GRANDCHILD, IN THE BACK SEAT. SHE THEN DROVE SLOWLY OVER THE BARRIER AND PARKED. SHE DROVE AROUND THE PARKING LOT STOPPING AND STARTING BEFORE PROCEEDING HOME, APPROXIMATELY 2 MILES. THIS WAS A SUDDEN AND RANDOM ACCELERATION AND THE BRAKES WOULD NOT FUNCTION. WE BELIEVE IT HAS TO DO WITH THE COMPUTER THAT CONTROLS THROTTLE AND THAT IT MALFUNCTIONED. WE DO NOT FEE SAFE IN THIS CAR AND ARE CONCERNED THAT THIS SUA MIGHT HAPPEN AGAIN. WE ARE ASKING SUBARU TO REPLACE THIS CONTROL COMPUTER. IT IS AT THE DEALERSHIP WAITING ON THEIR EVALUATION. WE WANT TO DRIVE AND FEEL SAFE IN OUR 2015 SUBARU OUTBACK! THERE SHOULD BE NO DOUBT OR HESITATION IN KEEPING US SAFE AND ONE INCIDENT OF SUA/BRAKE MALFUNCTION IS ONE TOO MANY. WE HAVE PICTURES OF THE AREA SHOWING THE TREE, FIRE HYDRANT AND BARK CHIPS WITH TIRE MARKS. YOU CAN FOLLOW THE PATH OF THE VEHICLE THROUGH THE PICTURE.

VEHICLE WAS PARKED OUTSIDE OVERNIGHT. IN THE MORNING A 12" S SHAPED CRACK HAD APPEARED IN THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE WINDSHIELD. THERE WAS NO DETECTABLE PRIOR DAMAGE AND NO KNOWN IMPACT TO CAUSE THE CRACK. THE CRACK HAS CONTINUED TO GROW AND BRANCH. DEALER STATES THE WINDSHIELD FAILS THE "PEN TEST," I.E. THERE IS A TINY NICK AT ONE POINT OF THE CRACK WHICH, THEY SAY, PROVES THE CRACK IS DUE TO IMPACT DAMAGE. I BELIEVE THE CHIP APPEARED AFTER THE CRACK FORMED, BUT CANNOT PROVE THIS (NOR CAN THE DEALER PROVE THE OPPOSITE). ONLINE RESEARCH SUGGESTS THERE IS A DESIGN DEFECT IN 2015 SUBARU OUTBACK WINDSHIELDS, WHICH FAIL AT REMARKABLE RATE.

UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. WHEN DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS--WHAT WOULD TRADITIONALLY BE 1ST AND 2ND GEAR (THE CAR HAS A CONTINUALLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION)--AND WHILE KEEPING CONSTANT PRESSURE ON THE GAS PEDAL, THE TRANSMISSION CHANGES THE ACCELERATION OF THE VEHICLE ON ITS OWN IN A PROCESS THAT FEELS LIKE IT CAN'T FIND THE RIGHT "GEAR", AND IT PROVIDES A "JERKING" FEELING (USUALLY ONLY A COUPLE OF "JERKS"). YET THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT JUST FINDING THE RIGHT GEAR FOR A SPECIFIC CONSTANT SPEED; AS IT SHIFTS AROUND, THE ACCELERATION CHANGES AND HAS, WITH CONSTANT PRESSURE ON THE PEDAL, ACCELERATED FASTER ON ITS OWN. I HAVE NEVER FELT LESS CONTROL OF A VEHICLE AS I HAVE WITH THIS ONE.

BRAND NEW VEHICLE, PARKED ON THE STREET FOR APPROXIMATELY ONE HOUR. WHEN RETURNING TO THE CAR, A CRACK IN THE WINDSHIELD, BEGINNING AT THE LOWER CENTER AND EXTENDING TO THE MIDDLE OF THE WINDSHIELD APPROXIMATELY 6 INCHES WAS EVIDENT. NO DEBRIS ON WINDSHIELD AND NO EVIDENCE OF IT BEING HIT WITH ANYTHING. CRACK HAS NOW EXTENDED FURTHER UP AND AROUND (SHAPE OF A LARGE QUESTION MARK) OF ABOUT 2 FT IN LENGTH. CONTACTED LOCAL DEALERS AND GLASS COMPANIES FOR REPAIR BUT NO ONE HAS ANY IN STOCK DUE TO A VERY LARGE NUMBER OF THESE ISSUES. AND THE PROJECTED DATE FOR WHEN REPLACEMENT GLASS WILL BE AVAILABLE IS NOW JULY 1 2015, MORE THAN 10 WEEKS SINCE THE DEFECT APPEARED. GIVEN WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING, I FULLY EXPECT THIS CRACK TO CONTINUE TO GROW AND BEGIN TO HAMPER VISIBILITY. WEB SEARCHES HAVE YIELDED MANY SIMILAR REPORTS OF THIS HAPPENING. *TR

I WAS SLOWING PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE AND JUST STRAIGHTENING OUT THE CAR WHEN I HEARD A STRANGE SOUND COMING FROM THE ENGINE. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THAT I HEARD A VERY LOUD ENGINE REVVING SOUND AND THEN SUDDENLY THE VEHICLE SHOT FORWARD LIKE A ROCKET, WENT OVER THE CEMENT BARRIER AND INTO THE WALL OF A BUILDING. IT SEEMED LIKE A VERY HIGH RATE OF SPEED, THOUGH THE DISTANCE WAS ONLY ABOUT 8 FEET. THE SEAT BELT DID NOT RESTRAIN ME AND MY CHEST SLAMMED INTO THE STEERING WHEEL. IT WAS DETERMINED LATER AT THE HOSPITAL THAT I HAD A CRACKED STERNUM AND SEVERAL BROKEN RIBS. I BELIEVE THERE WAS SOME SORT OF MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL OR SOFTWARE PROBLEM THAT CAUSED THIS UNINTENDED ACCELERATION, AND THE SEAT BELT ALSO WAS DID NOT FUNCTIONING AS INTENDED. *TR

THE TOUCH SCREEN THAT CONTROLS THE SYSTEM'S RADIO/NAVIGATION IS VERY GLOSSY AND WHILE DRIVING HOME, THE SUN HIT IT AT AN ANGLE AND BLINDED ME. I HAVE 2015 SUBARU OUTBACK WITH EYESIGHT AND BLIND SPOT DETECTION. I HAD STOPPED THE VEHICLE IN THE DRIVEWAY, ABOUT 10 FT FROM THE GARAGE, WAITING FOR MY HUSBAND TO CLEAN THE FLOOR. THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING. WHEN MY HUSBAND CAME OUT OF THE GARAGE AND SIGNALED ME TO PARK THE VEHICLE INSIDE, I WAS ABOUT TO MOVE THE VEHICLE SLOWLY IN THE GARAGE. HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY STARTED LIKE A BULLET, AS IF IT WAS TRYING TO ACCELERATE TO THAT SET SPEED, QUICKLY. MY HUSBAND HEARD THE WHEELS SCREECHING AND THE VEHICLE ACCELERATING. HE JUMPED ON THE SIDE AND SURVIVED BY AN INCH OR SO. WITHIN A FRACTION OF A SECOND, THE VEHICLE HIT THE CENTER SUPPORT WHICH SUPPORTS THE GARAGE DOORS, THEN THE SNOW BLOWER AND FURTHER STRUCK THE ITEMS KEPT AGAINST THE WALL BETWEEN THE HOUSE AND THE GARAGE, BEFORE COMING TO A STOP. IT APPEARS THAT, IN ADDITION TO THE BRAKE I APPLIED, EYESIGHT MAY HAVE HELPED STOP THE VEHICLE. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING IN THE US FOR OVER 18 YEARS WITHOUT A SINGLE INCIDENT. PARKING IN THE GARAGE IS THE SIMPLEST OF ALL THE TASKS. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT THE VEHICLE MAY HAVE ACCELERATED ON IT'S OWN DUE TO SOME MALFUNCTION.

TWO INCIDENTS RELATED TO THE IGNITION/ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FOR THIS CAR HAPPENED DURING A SECOND START AFTER A SHORT TRIP IN COLD WEATHER. BOTH INCIDENTS OCCURRED IN TEMPERATURES AT OR BELOW 5 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT. THE CAR STARTED AND RAN NORMALLY, THEN AFTER I DROVE FOR SHORT TRIP (BETWEEN 5 AND 10 MINUTES LONG) I PARKED THE CAR, TURNED IT OFF AND LEFT IT FOR ABOUT 5-10 MINUTES. FOR THE FIRST INCIDENT: THE CAR WOULD NOT START. THE ACCESSORIES, INCLUDING THE HEAT/FAN SYSTEM AND RADIO WORKED, BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT CRANK. THE DASHBOARD "SECURITY IMMOBILIZER" INDICATOR FLASHED AS IF THE KEY WAS NOT IN THE IGNITION. AFTER LEAVING THE KEY IN THE "ON" POSITION FOR 5 MINUTES, ALL OF THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS BRIEFLY ILLUMINATED AND THE CAR WAS ABLE TO START AGAIN. THE SECOND INCIDENT: THE CAR STARTED, BUT THE ACCESSORIES, INCLUDING THE HEAT/FAN SYSTEM WOULD NOT TURN ON. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE, BUT BECAUSE THERE WAS NO HEAT OR FAN, THE WINDSHEILD SOON BEGAN TO FOG-OVER, DIMINISHING VISIBILITY, DISABLING THE EYESIGHT SYSTEM, AND FORCING ME TO FIND A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OVER. AFTER THE CAR RAN FOR ABOUT 4 MINUTES TOTAL, THE ACCESSORIES TURNED ON AGAIN. I HAVE CONTACTED BOTH MY DEALER AND SUBARU OF AMERICA OF THIS PROBLEM, AND HAVE NOT YET BEEN ADVISED OF A SOLUTION OTHER THAN TO AVOID SHORT TRIPS IN COLD WEATHER. *TR

THERE IS A GLOSS FINISHED PLASTIC TOUCH PAD KIND OF COVER THAT COVERS THE ENTIRE NAVIGATION SYSTEM. THIS IS APPROXIMATELY 6"X8". IT IS NOT ONLY THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM, BUT THE RADIO, FUEL INFORMATION, ETC. IT IS SLANTED AS PART OF THE FRONT DASHBOARD, AND WHEN THE SUN HITS IT, IT BOUNCES DIRECTLY INTO THE DRIVERS EYES. THIS NAVIGATION SYSTEM SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECESSED INTO THE DASH, OR AT A MINIMUM, A MATTE FINISH INSTEAD OF A GLASSY FINISH ON THE PLASTIC. IT IS DEFINITELY A HAZARD TO THE DRIVER, AS IT IS BLINDING. IF YOU ARE TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY, WITH THE SUN AT AN ANGLE, THE REFLECTION OF LIGHT IN YOUR EYES IS AS BLINDING AS SOMEONE HOLDING A FLASHLIGHT STEADILY INTO YOUR EYES. I HAVE PICTURES THAT I TOOK OF THE SCREEN. IT MUST BE RECALLED SOON, WITH EITHER SOME TYPE OF REPLACEMENT COVER THAT IS A MATTE FINISH, OR AN ATTACHMENT THAT GOES AROUND THE SCREEN SO IT WOULD APPEAR RECESSED. I PAID THOUSANDS EXTRA FOR NAVIGATION, AND NOT ONLY IS IT BLINDING, BUT I CANNOT EVEN SEE THE NAVIGATION SCREEN ANYWAY. BEFORE I CAUSE AN ACCIDENT THAT INJURES MYSELF OR OTHERS, OR SOMEONE ELSE DOES, PLEASE CONSIDER RECALLING THIS. I WOULD BE HAPPY TO PROVIDE YOU WITH THE PHOTOGRAPHS TO SHOW THE REFLECTION. *TR
