When I start driving the vehicle after it has been sitting for a little while (anywhere between a couple hours to overnight), the first few times I use the brakes, it sounds and feels like the brakes. are grinding. There is a loud metallic grinding noise until I come to a full stop. This will last for several miles, and eventually go away. Sometime, the vehicle sliding up or stop too before I expected

I currently am leasing a 2022 Volkswagon Cross Atlas Sport that currently has 26,000 miles on it. In October, I noticed when I press on the brakes of my car, there is a loud grinding and squealing sound both inside and outside of the car. It is so bad, that I tend to not push the brakes all the way down. I brought my car to be serviced to Jack Daniels Volkswagon in Fair Lawn, NJ. They said they checked the brakes and they were in good condition and didn't need to be replaced. I left there and the car continued to squeal and grind when the brakes are pressed. I brought the car back last week to have them checked again and was told that they definitely hear the noise, but the brakes are still fine and they will not repair them. They are telling me there is nothing they can do and that I have to live with the noise and the feeling of the brakes being unsafe. I was upset and dissatisfied with their answer so I tried to call Volkswagon corporate and they told me the same answer, that I have to live with it. The girl at the repair shop told me that other Volkswagon cars are experiencing the same thing but there is no recall yet. She explained that it might be possible to change the rotors and it may correct the noise. All I would like is for someone from Vokswagon to approve the change of my rotors paid for by them to see if that will eliminate the noise or to rectify the situation. I feel unsafe whereas I can't even fully press down on my brakes without the noise and grinding being heard in and out of the car. I can't believe that I was told to live with it by the Volkswagon corporation and that noone would try and fix the manufacturers brake error.

Breaks vibrate and squeal when making a slow stop. Dealership stated was just debris, but it continues to do this repeatedly. Online this appears to be a known issue throughout the Volkswagen brand and dealership give the same reasoning, but the problem continues to persistent for all owners who have reported it. The dealerships appear to have been instructed to use the same reasoning for the issues, but never repair/resolve the issue.

There is a recall on my airbags in my vehicle. Volkswagen dealership states they do not have the remedy to this issue currently and do not know when it will be available. They also would not offer a rental car for the safety risk. This is putting my life and any other passengers at a high safety risk!

The engine has shut off on multiple occasions since we bought it in 2022. It appears to shut off at traffic lights and we are given the indicator message to start car manually. Typically when this happens we have to put the car in park and restart the engine. Just the other day 5/13/24 this happened again while I was sitting at a traffic light and I put the car in park and restarted the engine and as soon as I did it, the car shut off again, it did this 3 times in a row before I was able to get the car moving. We have taken it to the dealer and there are no error codes they can find and they cannot mimic what is happening either. This is a huge safety issue as I am highly afraid one of these times that I will be stopped at a light trying to get my car to start and will get rear-ended or worse.
May 17, 2024
I was coming to a red light and my 2022 vehicle shut off. A message popped up on the screen and said “please restart car”. This is very dangerous as I had to put my car in park and restart the vehicle in moving traffic.

Connecting rod bearing caused the engine fail. The Vehicle is currently in the Dealer's service shop. I was driving in a very busy highway with my wife when suddenly a lot of smog start coming out of under the hood and the vehicle suddenly stopped in the middle of the highway. Had to stop traffic to be able to pull over. Another vehicle stopped to help us and handed a fire extinguisher because she though it caught on fire. The problem has been confirmed by the dealer. The vehicle has been inspected by the manufacturer. No warning lamps or messages, but the vehicle began to jerk a few seconds before it totally failed.

This vehicle has an issue where the engine stalls when operating a slow speeds/a stop. When the engine stalls, a message appears on the dashboard stating that you must put the car in park, turn off the ignition, restart the car, and then put it back into drive. This has posed as a significant risk to myself, my wife, and our [XXX] daughter. Additionally, my wife is currently [XXX]. The engine has stalled on us in the middle of an 8 lane intersection when attempting to turn left, when merging onto a highway, and numerous other very dangerous situations. This issue begin about 1 year after purchasing the car (brand new) from Volkswagen. Since then, we have brought the car back to the dealership where we purchased it (Heritage Volkswagen Parkville) over 5 times to have them look into this issue. They have attempted to replace the gas tank (claimed it had shrunk) and reset the computer system, yet neither of these things have worked. Neither myself or the dealership can "make" the car stall as it happens very randomly (which increases the risk that this issue poses) and now we are stuck - where Volkswagen has won't continue to research the issue/attempt to fix it yet my family is still left at risk with a car we purchased brand new off of their lot. The vehicle has not been inspected by the police, insurance, or any other people outside of Volkswagen and the vehicle has no warning signals that there is an issue and no code that they have been able to pull at the dealership. Slowing down as I pulled into a turning lane. The vehicle lost power and cut off with a warning light saying please restart engine manually. I did start engine manually to begin with. I had to throw my car in park in the middle of the road. And restart it. The vehicle restarted and I got out of the way with my kids in the car. And after continuing to drive the vehicle feels like it has no power. This is not the first incident my car has 53k miles on it. Has had 2 gear shifters, 2 auto stop start relays and gone through several batteries

While at a red light, stopped in traffic and at a stop sign the vehicle turns off and says to restart manually. Need to put in park and manually restart. Very dangerous when no one around me knows what I am doing. This occurred four (4) the times the last 4-YEARS. I will contact the dealer tomorrow as the latest random stop occurred today. A truly random occurrence with no warning.

5 days after purchasing the brand new vehicle I was driving on the highway and felt and heard a clunking sound. Shortly after the check engine light and EPC light came on. Then as I was driving (55mph) I lost all power. The dash was telling me to restart my engine manually as I was driving. I was able to get to the side of the road - in a very unsafe location and had to wait for a tow. When the vehicle got back to the dealership they said it looked like the engine had just exploded. In the oil pan was chunks of metal. The entire engine and turbo had to be replaced. The entire situation was extremely dangerous and no one has an explanation for why this happened.

when I got in my car the display showed that my driver’s door was open, but it wasn’t. When I tried to put it in drive, the car had an awful beeping sound and wouldn’t go into drive unless I released the emergency brake button. Once I came to a stop the car would automatically go into park and wouldn’t not proceed unless I released the emergency brake again. I did look up if there was a recall and there was back in February 15, 2023. I would like to bring it to Volkswagen for it to be fixed and not have to pay for it as I have only owned the car since October of 2025.

While driving down the road with my 9year old and pregnant wife at 30MPH vehicle came to a complete stop and started flashing a picture of car with red all around, message went away immediately and car continued as if nothing had happened. we were NEARLY rear ended. Very hard stop This is my wife’s daily driver. She is 3 months pregnant and we dont feel comfortable driving this vehicle. I reached out to the dealership we bought it from and no answer. I will continue to call, manufacturer need to stand by there vehicles and get this issue resolved.

I was driving on the highway, when out of nowhere, the emergency brake assist was activated, causing the car to brake out of nowhere and almost causing a multi-vehicle collision. It was during rush hour, so luckily, due to traffic, I was only driving between 20-30mph. The car in front of me was at a safe distance and nothing passed in front that would have been a cause for the emergency brakes to be activated. This is extremely dangerous and could have resulted in a very bad multi-vehicle collision had the car behind me been just slightly closer. This is the second time that this has happened. The first time I was driving down a local street doing approximately 15mph, no rain, no debris in the road, and out of nowhere the emergency brake activated and brought me to a full stop. I’m very concerned now as I am often driving with my toddler in the car and this has now happened twice for no apparent reason.

On January of 2022 we are pulling into the parking lot of a grocery store the car stalls out at about 5 mph. Volkswagen Autobahn says the door harness needs replaced assured us it was good to go. Almost 30 days later it stalls again at about 5mph pulling into our driveway. Volkswagen Autobahn informed us the door harness they put in 30 days ago was defective. My wife and I started to raise concerns. We asked what if this does it at a high rate of speed. We were told by Volkswagen Autobahn this issue usually happens at 5mph or less. Less than 15 days later we are on I 20 in Southwest Fort Worth the vehicle loses power at 75mph in the fast lane. I was able to coast over to exit and on ramp before it came to a complete stop. My wife and I sat in the vehicle with our seat belt on for two and a half hours until the tow truck came. Only one side of the emergency lights (driver side) were working. It made it seem like we were merging onto the highway. AAA roadside arrived they had to obtain permission to bring one of their other trucks onto the high as that area they deemed one of the most dangerous locations in Fort Worth. A flatbed truck would not work due to the e brake would not disengage to pull it on to the bed. The car was returned to us on 3/24/23 and were advised that a door harness and module in the door were replaced. I drove the car home from the dealer and it has been parked in the garage since then. Based on our past experience with this vehicle my wife and I not confident that the repairs completed resolved that issue and we no longer feel safe driving this car.

I leased a 2022 VW Atlas Cross Sport last month and currently has less than 600 miles on it and the issue's happened 4 separate times.  Today it happened twice.  I am in line to drop my son off at school with many cars in front of me and behind me so it's a stop and go kind of situation; I let go of my brakes and about to step on the pedal when the engine shuts off entirely.  I had to put the car in park and start the engine again when it happened again! I just feel unsafe now driving that car.  Bringing it to the shop Monday morning (Friday today). The previous two occurrences took place while stopped at a traffic light. While the engine is off a message is displayed ""Start Engine Manually". I feel this is a safety hazard because I don't know if this car's engine will shut off while I am actually driving since it did shut down while I was in "Drive" mode plus it's happened to others while driving on highway. The next time it happens I will need to film it.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

I purchased my car in July 2022 and started having issues with it within 3 months. I’ve have my car at the dealer 4 times for them to look at… 1 - the brakes (grinding, scraping noise, squeaking that can be fetl in the pedal). I was told each time that the rotors and brake pads aren’t compatible. VW knows about the problem but doesn’t have a fix for it. They say they clean the pads and that the car is safe to drive (really?). 2 - the infotainment system. On several occasions I cannot switch from one media system (Sirius XM, FM, AM, blue tooth, etc…), when I turn my car on, the screen shows “initializing” but nothing happens. It just sits there. Today was a first; the whole system shut off and the screen was blank. No radio, no phone, nothing. I’ve made several videos to show the dealer what the system is doing and they tell me it just needs an update, yet I still have the problem. 3 - the front assist light comes on but doesn’t engage or when I am stopping it will engage so hard that it nearly stops my car on a dime (if I wasn’t wearing my seatbelt, I would have been on the floorboard). 4 - the remote start doesn’t work, from my fob or the app on my phone. The dealer was able to make it work once and said it was fixed. Hasn’t worked since. I only have 7,900 miles on my car and I just want it permanently fixed.
Apr 23, 2023
I have a 6 month old Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport (purchased in July/2022), only 5,000 miles on it. When driving, the front driver's side door warning light kept coming on, even though the door was fully closed. The car continued to beep and a warning message was displayed asking me to put the car in park. When I slowed down or stopped at a stop sign or traffic light, the emergency brake would automatically engage and I'd have to press a button to turn it off so I could drive. This is very dangerous to have the car be thrown into park when you're slowing down or stopping at a traffic light. This happened numerous times in the course of a couple weeks. Shortly after, my car display (with backup camera) went black and would not come back on. I brought my car into the dealer and they said they were unable to replicate what happened and couldn't get the warning messages to appear, so there was nothing they could fix. They reset my display/radio/backup camera and said it just lost power and needed to be rebooted (which isn't really normal for a new car and funny it happened at the same time the other problems were happening.) It appears there was a recall on previous years' models for a faulty wiring harness that was causing the same problems. Well, I'm thinking they need to continue this recall to newer models because it doesn't appear they have fixed the problem. It's very dangerous and I'm worried the automatic brake is going to engage, causing me to get rear-ended. If this ever happens, you better believe I'm holding Volkswagen accountable, since this is a known issue and they've already issued a recall on previous years' models. PLEASE FIX THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM!

While driving less than 30 mph in slow traffic the automatic braking system engaged itself which caused me to almost get hit. Another time, I was in slow traffic less than 20mph both sides of the street were filled with cars driving and my automatic brake began to light up and the brake was engaging but I was still able to keep driving the car despite what was happening with the automatic brakes. In normal driving conditions whenever I press on the brakes the vehicle does not stop right away. It take a lot of effort for the vehicle to stop almost as if, the car is too heavy for the braking equipment installed on the vehicle. There have been maybe one to three times where I slammed on the brakes and the vehicle did not fully stop which now has caused increased anxiety. Another issue I am having not related to the braking mechanism. Electrical on the infotainment system. The screen has gone out a few times and the syncing system from cell phone via Bluetooth does not always seamlessly happen. I have taken my car to be checked out regarding my concerns. I was advised the car checked out.

There has been no incident with my car. The DRL on the drivers side stopped working and wasn’t my fault. The price to replace the light is absolutely unheard of. I have owned three Volkswagens and loved all three but this is very disappointing. The car only has 40,000 miles on it. I don’t feel like this should’ve happened this soon.

The front light led bulbs died. First it was the driver side at 53k miles, now the passenger side. The car has less than 55k miles. The price for the repair is outrageous. $2,000 for just ONE led bulb change. I’ve seen forums and many, many WV Atlas have the same problem. WV should be responsible for this. $4,000 total for two light bulb replacements! It’s insane!

The car’s engine start/stop feature has failed multiple times while at an incomplete stop. This failure endangers the driver because the car will not drive, forcing the driver to put the car in park & manually restart the car. This failure has occurred at least 6 times, reported as the original owner of the car for 3+ years. Recently, as a potential result(?), the car’s check engine light has appeared (@52k miles). The dealership suggested replacement of the N80 purge valve,~$400 repair at VW dealership, to fix the tandem start/stop error & check engine light issue.

This vehicle is burning excessive engine oil. My vehicle required two quarts of oil before my oil change. This occurred at the 20,000-mile interval and again at 30,000 miles. This vehicle also had two coolant repairs before 30,000 miles. The car has not been in any accidents. The vehicle had no oil.

While driving the Pre-collision system will alert when there is nothing in front of vehicle. I’ve had to bring the car into the service department on 3 separate occasions due to this system problem. The pre-collision system has triggered the brakes on 2 occasions for no reason at all. The wireless charging pad does not function properly. The service department claims the vehicle is working as it’s suppose to even with documented proof of the pre-collision system triggering with nothing in front of the car. I was able to duplicate the wireless charging pad at the service center and the technician still claimed the vehicle is working as normal.

Since purchasing this car, i have had problems with the parking brake automatically turning on when driving and at every stop; the car doors in the front do not lock/unlock; causing a concern for emergency with two kids in the car. The sunroof malfunctions along with the windows working on their own, going up and down and the sunroof not closing. The electrical front panels malfunction and cause the break system to start on its own, the screens turn black and am unable to use the front power screen. The doors lock and unlock by themselves from the inside and outside, not able to use the buttons on the doors to lock/unlock. The windows constantly open and close by themselves, again causing safety harm for the children in the car. When the car comes to a stop sign and brakes, it will either shut off or the parking/emergency brake will engage automatically. I have called 2 branches of dealerships through vw and since its a recalled car with no remedy, they will not let me schedule appointments to fix as they have no loaners available long term. I am very scared driving this car with two small children and the airbags recalls, brake problems and electrical malfunctioning. The VW customer care did not help me at all with the claim, and more concerns are happening weekly. With no remedy for the recall, vw dealerships have given me no trade in options or ability to put into the service department; they took name and number and said they would call when remedy is available.

This vehicle DOES has a recall listed for the door harness. I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to get a return call from my dealship since NOVEMBER. I literally leave a message (after physically talking to someone) and NO ONE calls me back. The passenger front door is misaligned and does not close properly, the electronics go crazy and sensors randomly go off. I took the vehicle in one week after purchase regarding the above and was told they needed to get approved to get my car in and get me a loaner. Service stated my car would need to be sent to their body shop for "several weeks," and couldn't provide a loaner at that time. Since then, I have called MULTIPLE times and nothing. With the issues with the electronics and now the wiring harness, this vehicle is definitely NOT SAFE TO DRIVE, though VW claims it is. How is it safe to drive when you are driving down the road and the emergency brake engages? Then you have a wreck and the airbags don't deploy correctly? I am a nurse and drive all over Texas for my job. Sometimes I may drive 3 hours just to get to one location, then drive 3 hours back. These issues do not leave me confident in driving my VW safely.

Initially, my Atlas would not auto-start with the key fab. When I returned to my vehicle, the lights flashed, it gave a battery warning, then I was able to start the vehicle. However, several lights on the dashboard cycled through, radio/center console was non-responsive, and I could not get my car to park. Eventually, I had to use the emergency break to park it. We jumped the vehicle and it did start again. However, very shortly thereafter it lit on fire and there were visible flames under the hood. We called the fire department, put the fire out with water and an extinguisher. Then we had the vehicle towed to the dealership. Its been more than 2 months since this incident and no work has been started. Volkswagen corporate sent an engineer out to inspect my car (confirmed by the dealership that they did visit) but still no work has begun. My car is still covered under the original manufacturer warranty. We bought brand new and have owned the vehicle for less than 4 years. VW Customer Care line has been "close due to an all day employee meeting" since last week. The dealership has no information about my car.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
1 complaint
On going fuel system issues that pose significant safety risks, suggest potential design or manufacturing flaws, and are impacting vehicle performance. The primary component affected is the fuel injection system. I have had to replace the fuel leak detection pump, spark plugs, and ignition coils multiple times, as fault codes have repeatedly appeared even after repairs, indicating a persistent failure within the fuel injection system. Additionally, I believe that the use and recommendations regarding fuel grades are contributing to the problem. I was informed by a Volkswagen employee that I should have been using 93 octane fuel; however, I was never provided with this guidance at the time of purchase. The vehicle’s fuel tank clearly indicates the use of 87 octane fuel. This discrepancy raises concerns about whether consumers are adequately informed about the proper fuel to prevent issues. The lack of clear guidance on fuel grade requirements appears misleading and could be viewed as potentially deceptive. My vehicle has begun riding rough and shaking while driving. I have been informed that I now need a decarbonization (decarb) engine intake service and a fuel injection service to address these new symptoms. These issues further indicate that there may be underlying problems within the fuel and intake systems, possibly related to the ongoing deposit buildup and improper fuel use. The failed fuel leak detection pump, affected fuel system components, and the recent service needs are available for inspection and can be provided upon request.
The malfunction of the fuel injection system and the fuel leak detection system substantially engine failure while driving which could endanger the driver, passengers, and others on the road. The issues manifested as the vehicle would jerk later my engine light came on, prompting me to seek repairs. It has not yet been formally inspected by the police, or insurance representatives, the mechanic’s diagnosis confirms the malfunction.

The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal, there was an abnormal metal on metal grinding sound coming from the brakes. The contact stated that the failure was a recurring failure while slowing for traffic or while coming to a stop. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent at first but over time became more frequent. Additionally, the "Emergency Stop" warning light illuminated, and the vehicle came to a complete stop. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact had then taken the vehicle to an authorized dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 18,285.

There is a metallic rattle in the driver's side b-pillar (similar to the issue in the 2018 Tiguan LWB). Every component in the pillar has been replaced and the rattle persists. The first time I complained about it to the dealership the car only had 1,500 miles on it. 3 years and several months of the car sitting in the shop they have not been able to fix it nor have they bothered working with VW of America to find a solution. I'm guessing it is structural. The brakes are also very concerning and I have mentioned it many times over the last few years. It is not the normal VW squeal -- it is a grinding that causes the car to shake. I was told by my local VW that "Apparently you've never driven high performance vehicles before--that's normal". Uh, no it is not normal. Often times when shifting into drive from park (even on flat ground) the shifter is hard to move and then makes an awful clunking noise. Coolant disappears. And, indicator light does not come on. I was refilling the wiper fluid reservoir and noticed the coolant reservoir was almost empty, however, no light has come on. I've had to top off the coolant at least every couple months.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

We bought a 2022 black Atlas Volkswagen in April 23, 2022. In December 2023 we noticed persistent braking system issues, loud horrible grinding squeling noises and squeaking brakes at different speeds. It felt like a metallic scraping/grinding sound when in reverse and forward when coming to a stop at low speed. Also random emergency braking approaching traffic light intersections. We brought the car to the dealer Flagship Volkswagen immediately and they gave a us a January 8, 2024 appointment. The mileage in was 17,476 and their diagnostic was crystallized discs. They proceeded and cut the four discs. They charged us $256. On January 24, 2024 we returned to the dealer with exactly the same problem and a mileage of 17, 925. Their diagnostic this time was that the brakes have enough friction surface left and that the unit was working correctly and should be under observation by us.

My airbag warning light keeps randomly coming on and off. My breaks are making a constant grinding and screeching noise that alternate on the driver and passenger side randomly and at times fail to break properly. The dealer has stated that nothing is wrong with my breaks or rotors

The water pump on this vehicle required replacing, and the coolant light comes on for possible overheating. This vehicle has under 18,000 miles with this issue. The car has not been in any accidents. This is the second incident with the coolant system, but the first time its being reported to the dealer. This car purchased was brand new vehicle with 10 miles. The automatic start and stop system shuts off and on by itself and the warning light came on while driving the vehicle.

I leased the vehicle on 2/2022, months later I started having braking problems. The dealer stated the brakes squeals only in the morning, but the brakes squeals throughout the day while I am driving. A water leaked was fixed, however, the carpet remains in the car and on back order, also the smell effects my pregnant wife. If we were told brakes would be squealing we wouldn't have purchased the vehicle.

STEERING
1 complaint
While driving on the highway, going approximately 70 mph, a red Steering Malfunction light lit up on the dash and beeped loudly. The steering wheel almost immediately locked up and would not turn left or right. It took pulling hard in one direction to get in over three lanes and onto the shoulder. After attempting to turn off and turn the vehicle back on, the light remained and the beeping would occur a few times before stopping. The vehicle had to be towed from its location. The light remained on and steering wheel continued to be locked up the following day when service at VW turned on the vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

Just bought the vehicle within the first day the radio systems turned off and cannot turn on again after 8 turn on the vehicle it affects all the safety systems because it's all connected to the radio. Vehicle was taken back to dealership which was reprogrammed and given back after one day it began again and now it's back at the dealership. They are saying they're going to put a brand new video but it's back on it and that I could still use my vehicle even though radio is not working correctly connecting to all the safety components. I was told that it was safe to drive even though I feel like it's not safe to drive at all in that condition. Right now I have a loaner car but they want it back within 2 days and until I get the new radio and hopefully it will work correctly and turn on again all the bells ring after a while because it's connected to the radio system. Once I put the car in reverse push the gas in the car did not move. So far it's working fine

Lease 10/29/2021. Remote start never worked. Diagnosed as faulty fuel pump. Replaced. Two days later remote start stopped working and check engine light came on. VW service advised vehicle safe to drive. Days later broke down due to no fuel. Fuel guage always says tank full. Last week park brake engaged while driving 60mph on a 4 lane highway.
