How to read a Volkswagen Beetle VIN — every digit explained
Every Volkswagen Beetle carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Volkswagen and the country it was built in.
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Beetle.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Beetle VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Air Bags 196 Read
Consumer hit an other vehicle on the front or the side, and air bags did not deploy. *ak
The airbags deployed on their own on 7-4-2023 in my daughter’s 2013 VW Beetle. My daughter and her friend were both injured (physically/mentally) as a result of both front airbags (steering wheel and dashboard airbags) deploying on their own causing over $10,000 USD damage to the beetle and injury to my daughter and her friend who was a passenger in the front seat. Volkswagen never sent out a recall notice to us even though we have owned the car since 9-13-2019 and the airbag recall notice was determined on 12-16-2020 by NHTSA and announced on that date. I only became aware of this recall through investigation, after the accident happened and during repairing of the car. The vehicle was not inspected by the manufacturer, or police, or insurance even though Progressive Insurance paid out over $20,000 in damages to the parked cars that were struck after the airbags deployed causing the vw beetle to crash into two parked cars in a residential neighborhood. There was a sparse accident report that was filed by Colorado State police. There were not any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the Tatanka airbag failure and recall.
The vehicle was involved in a frontal collision and the air bags did not deploy.*ak ph *jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 volkswagen beetle. While driving approximately 3 mph, another vehicle crashed into the front end of the contact's vehicle. The driver side air bag deployed. The contact sustained lacerations to the forehead and a fractured sternum that required medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 9,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 volkswagen beetle. The contact stated that the independent dealer who sold her the vehicle was unable to verify if the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 12v540000 (air bags). The dealer did not provide the recall history and the contact had not called a volkswagen dealer. The contact was concerned about the air bags working properly. On november 2, 2018, while the contact was driving 20 mph, another vehicle cut in front of the contact's vehicle. The contact applied the brake pedal, but rear ended the other vehicle. None of the air bags deployed. A police report was filed. The contact sustained head and back pain and was transported by ambulance for medical treatment. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard. The vehicle was not diagnosed by a dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the crash. The cause of the failure was not determined. The failure mileage was not available.

1.Air bags did not deploy in a three vehicle collision. 2.Passenger and myself could have hit our head on the dashboard or steering wheel. 3. unknown 4.yes, its been inspected by insurance company (the driver at fault). 5. no, no lights have ever come on. Car was always in great condition.
While slowly approaching a parking space in a shopping center my 2009 vw beetle suddenly accelerated, jumping over the curb and sidewalk, and crashing into the side of the building. It then rebounded about 6-8 feet. The passenger side airbag deployed but the driver side airbag didn't.
Electrical System 142 Read
Battery problem. I stopped at signal and when i restarted the engine stopped and i was almost rear end. The abs and brake lights came on. The car was towed. Apparently the battery was falling out of the car at 13,000 miles. A few months later i heard a noise and slipping within the transmission. As it turned out, engine coolant had leaked into the transmission and a rebuilt was put in. Within a few weeks after the rebuilt was put in, it was making some noise and it had intermittent lurching. I complained to vw of america and the dealership. They took care of the noise and said they would be unable to help with the lurch problem. I was in an accident a month and a half after getting the rebuilt. I went into a pole sideways. I had an independent transmission specialist test drive it after the car was repaired. He reported an unusually long pause for engagemet. I believe that when i was in a roll forward motion and would put my foot to the gas, it would not engage properly and lurched. The reason it was intermittent , is due to the fact that sometimes when you would be in a rollforward motion it would be in gear and not lurch. If it was not in gear due to the long pause, you would get a lurching movement. My first transmission never had this problem. There is a potential design flaw with this transmission. When i was talking to the service manager at commonwealth, with my first transmission, he had stated they were having problems with the jetta transmissions.*ak
My 2019 VW Beetle, AT, keyless entry was parked in a store parking lot. When I left the vehicle it wouldn't lock. I thought my fob battery died. I came out of the store about 30 minutes later and my car had rolled away. It came to rest about 50 feet away, up against a fixed object light pole. I was shocked! My rear bumper sustained damage. I got in my car and saw it was in D. I guess I left it in D, turned off the push button start/stop and it rolled away after I left it. I then did some checking and found that when push button start/stop tech is installed in many cars with the added safety features of audible sounds or transmissions ratcheting into park when stopped with transmission in Drive, which are standard safety features on most newer cars, but were not standard on my car. The car did not alert me to anything being wrong. This is a safety hazard. I noted that VW recalled their keyed entry Beetles for Rollaway Risks, but did not include key-less entry vehicles. A call to VW ensued and a case number was assigned, #04874410. Regional personnel Cathy was coordinating the case which she said caused an internal report to be filed. On Sept 3 at approximately noon, she called me to say that the accident was my fault, for parking incorrectly, VW would not pay to have my rear bumper fixed, nor would they take any responsibility. This Rollaway Risk could have been deadly, it could have been worse. I would hate to see someone killed for being in similar circumstances. VW is negligent in their response, these cars should be recalled for being a safety hazard to the general public. I am deeply concerned with the nonchalant attitude of VW. My husband's Lincoln ratchets into Park when he stops the car using the button if left in Drive. Ford does the same thing. Nissan makes an audible noise alerting the driver to something being amiss. VW is not even on the ballpark on this, what a shame!
Daughter was driving to school, car stalled, restarted car then saw smoke and fire under passenger side dash. Car burnt completely, totaled. Have before and after pictures. ..updated 11/12/14 *bf
Owner was driving vehicle and attempted to turn on a/c. When a/c would not work properly, she pulled off roadway and stopped. Smoke and burning odor came out of vents, with fire eventually showing from climate control panel. Interior of vehicle was fully involved in fire when fd arrived. Engine compartment not involved. Radio operating properly prior to incident. No prior issues with vehicle. *tr
Windows started going up and down randomly and doors locking/unlocking randomly. As i was reaching through my window to gram my keys from the ignition my arm got pinched, and lodged in the window that was going up, (i was trying to get my keys before getting locked out of the car (again) due to the random locking and unlocking). Auto reversal of the windows when an appendage gets lodged in the window did not occur. This pinched and lodged my left arm in the window to a point of bruising an area of 4 inches by 2 inches. After exhaustively researching this issue (which is a common issue with the door lock modules on the 98-02 vw beetles with the old style "loud" power locks) i concluded that the door lock module and the door closed microswitch were with culprits of this incident. I am very grateful that this only occurred to a 32 year old man and not one of my 4 small children (7mo-7 years). Vwoa should do their research and see that hundreds if not thousands of vw owners have had to replace dlms on multiple doors at a cost of at least $200+ each door (more at the dealership). This should be a recall for the safety factor alone, let alone the inconvenience factor of having to replace a dlm because of a $3 microswitch at the door closed sensor, or 1 of 6 bad solder joints on the circuit board inside the door lock module. Information on the exact problem can be found on multiple vw repair sites (tdiclub.com; vwvortex.com; newbeetle.org; etc, etc, etc) i do understand that my car is 14 years old, however i have had to spend over $1000 fixing vw factory mistakes on this car already. I love vw, being a former owner of several air cooled vws in the past, however this will severely affect my decision to ever buy another water cooled vw. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 1998 vw beetle diesel. Driver was traveling about 5mph on a clear day when she noticed a squeak in the engine. Took to dealer for a new battery and to check squeak in front end and check air conditioner. The technician discovered fuses were burnt and that both fans were melted. After repairs made contact states that squeak still present and fans still not working. Technician informed contact that repairs made correctly. Contact took vehicle back to dealer and it is still there. Failure mileage was 106,000. Current mileage 106,075.
Volkswagen overheat with fuse block electrical fire. Fire was contained to the fuse block of 1998 volkswagen new beetle. The fuse block on top of the battery caught fire. *tr
I own a volkswagen beetle, 98. I was driving my car to work around 9:00 am. The air conditioner would not turn past 2. I could not get it to turn off either. Smoke then began to come out from around the vents of the ac. I pulled off of the road, called my work, and my fiance. The smoke then got worse, then were flames. I then called 911. Police and fire trucks arrived. My car was totaled. The inside was completely destroyed, and most of the outside. *ak
I"ve had multiple failures with my 1998 beetle. The car was overheating--found out that the engine fuses were melted over the battery terminal. My reverse lights stopped working--no one has been able to correct that yet, my daytime running lights don't usually work, but sometimes will come on all by themselves. Got locked in my car twice. The alarm sometimes goes off for no reason. The car periodically doesn't start. Had it towed to vw twice for this. They could find no problems. Also, something in the car's electrical components is drowning the battery--have to buy a new battery every six months. I have replaced both windows once . I had the brake light switch replaced three times and was rear -ended once before vw finally did a recall on that part. I'm sure i have left something out--there is so much it's hard to remember. Bottom line--this car is a hazard on the road for the person driving and other motorists. *jb
I own a 1998 volkswagen beetle. About a year ago the electrical system malfunctioned and i was locked in my car. Fortunately i was able to get out using a new remote i had just purchased.*ak secondly, two days ago i was driving on an interstate, it was warm, and i turned on the fan. It immediately started blowing 'high' and wouldn't turn off. Within a minute the dashboard began smoking and there was a distinct eletrical smell. I stopped, raised the hood and there was no fire. The fan stuck in the 'high' position and caused a fire which 'totalled' the car. The dash and seats melted and the front windshield broke out from the flames.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 volkswagen beetle. The contact stated that the window regulator for the driver's side window was inoperable. The contact was unable roll the window up or down. The contact also stated that the door failed to unlock on several occasions. The contact stated that the passenger's side window regulator was previously replaced. The vehicle was taken to volkswagen of huntington located at (838 e jericho tpke, huntington, ny 11746). The contact was informed that the window regulator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 35,600.
Tl* the contact owns a 2015 volkswagen beetle. While driving approximately 55 mph, the sun roof exploded. The contact was uninjured and continued driving to his destination. The vehicle was taken to team volkswagen (3990 w lincoln hwy, merrilville, in 45410) where it was determined that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v658000 (visibility). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 44,130.
The contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Beetle. The contact stated that while attempting to activate the high-beam headlights, the lever failed to operate as designed. The contact stated who is an independent mechanic, diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the multifunction lever switch failed to operate in the forward position as designed, and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 volkswagen beetle. While driving 45 mph, there was an abnormal cracking noise and the panoramic sun roof cracked. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and opened case number: 17079053. The failure mileage was 60,000.
Windshield crack horizontally from rooftop down in two places behind rearview mirror. *tr
My windshield cracked on its own while driving on the highway at a rate of 60mph. There were no chips or splits from rocks. I heard a cracking noise and watched as the my windshield cracked from the passenger side midway to the middle of the window. When i pulled over to make sure my car was safe to drive, i saw that the crack happened on the interior of the window. *tr
Driver side window would drop about 1.5 cm when exit the vehicle but would not go back up. Was allowing water and outside debris to enter the vehicle. When i notified the dealer and my salesperson they said they will take care of it and call vw on my behalf. It has been more than a month and i have heard nothing. Some reviews online said they were able to have vw take it back/ buy it back. Frankly this would be the best solution as in va the rain and cold winds is just unbearable in the winter with the window unable to operate as it was designed to. *tr
I have three concerns about my new car. First and foremost is the window issue. I had the vx beetle for about two weeks when the automatic windows on both driver's and passenger's sides either do not go up or down all the way as they are supposed to. They stop intermittently and take several tries to either close or open. Safety issue. Dealer says vx knows and is working on fix. Vx says the same but i have had the car three months now and no fix (and no fix in sight it seems). Also, fuel gauge would not register as full. A part for this issue has been ordered and is in. It will be installed in a few days and hopefully addresses this problem although other consumers have posted that this doesn't always work. Lastly, my air conditioner blows warm air unless you turn the dial completely to max. Any adjustment backward feels like the heater is on. When i turn off the ac and put on the fan with vents open wanting to get fresh air (55 degrees out), air warmer than outside is blowing in. It's difficult to adjust the interior temperature when you have either ice cold or heat and are hesitant to mess with the windows!!! *tr

The 2015 Volkswagen Beetle was in a minor accident that was rear-ended by another vehicle. No one was injured. The other party claimed responsibility and the vehicle was repaired and the other party paid for the repairs. The problem is with Volkswagen not having the OEM safety equipment available to complete the repairs. The specific part is a spoiler attached to the rear trunk lid that increases the visibility of the brake light built into the rear trunk lid. In traffic this vehicle has only two brake lights within the rear fenders lower to the ground. The spoiler attached above the brake light that is attached at the top of the rear trunk lid, sits above the tail lights and the brake light can be seen by the driver in the vehicle behind the VW. VW claims that this part is on backorder. It is not available within the United States. I believe Volkswagen is refusing to manufacture this critical safety part for repairs of their vehicle. I have been told by several dealers that this part is not available and is on back order. I have tried to locate this part from VW dealers in Texas and out of state also. They all tell me the same thing. Its on back order. I understand this vehicle model is out of production but is being reintroduced again in 2025. Volkswagen should be responsible for providing original parts, especially critical safety parts. Hopefully the NTSA can bring this problem to Volkswagens attention and they will make the responsible safety decision and provide a critical safety component of this vehicle to the customers of their company. Thank you.
In early may i had an accident with our 1998 vw beetle which was caused by a defective part. The car was in drive, and i pushed down the brake petal. Then i changed gears to reverse and gently stepped on the gas pedal. The car lurched forward uncontrollably at an accelerated speed and hit a trailer at my place of work causing damage to both the beetle and trailer. The car was brought in for servicing at vallejo volkswagen (1401 sonoma blvd, vallejo ca) the previous friday, so it was surprising that the car would malfunction so dangerously after having just been serviced. The car was brought back to vallejo volkswagen monday afternoon. The dealer told me that it sounded like this was due to a faulty brake lights switch and that they had seen this problem before. I left the car there overnight and they determined that the cause of the malfunction was indeed the faulty brake light switch. The part in question was subject to a recall and had apparently been replaced in my car in december of 2003. Vallejo volkswagen disavowed any responsibility for the accident and attributed the malfunction to normal wear and tear of the break light switch. However, if this part is susceptible to breakdown due to normal wear and tare then it should be inspected when the car was serviced. Vallejo volkswagen replaced the defective switch and had the audacity to charge me for doing so. Needless to say i am very unhappy with this situation and feel like both vallejo volkswagen and volkswagen are liable for the damage caused by the accident and are liable for placing me in such a dangerous and uncontrolled situation. Indeed, i am extremely relieved that the car hit the trailer, and god forbid not another human being which could have easily occurred had i been in a crowded parking lot. Addendum: i recently found out that as of may 30th 2006 there has been a recall of the recalled brake light switch. *nm

Fuse that controls reading or map light in cabin and external lighting outside for night driving continually fails (3). Safety issue because rear lights at night only come on when brakes applied.
The front headlight beam has a distinctive blind spot on the left side and a double notch on the right side. Volkswagen refuses to address this as they say it's by design though i have seen another beetle, same model year with the same hids, have a completely normal headlight beam. With the beam like it is, it makes driving the car at night unsafe, especially on black asphalt roads. I've escalated this to volkswagen of america and they insist this is by design and is due to the shutter that comes down when using the normal headlight beam. Our other vehicle is a gmc acadia with the same system and it does not do this. On the beetle the if i switch it to high beams the blind spot and notch go away. Also volkswagen claims that the left headlight is aimed lower on purpose as to not blind oncoming traffic. The car sits so low i don't see how that's needed, especially when our acadia which sits up higher doesn't do this. I did take a look at a couple of other 2019 beetles at another dealership and the headlight beams were all different; still a blind spot and notches but in different spots. The blind spot and notches are seen both stationary and in motion. I have pictures and video of both. I feel this is a design defect that will lead to an accident at night as it hinders the drivers view on the left side. Volkswagen has ignored my concerns and refuses to address this. I'm very concerned for our safety and my wife and i refuse to drive the car at night because of this. Volkswagen's 'remedy' is to trade it in. We love the car, just not the headlights at night. Please investigate. I have attached two photos; one low beam and one high beam so that you can see the difference.
The contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible. The contact stated that the front passenger’s side seat would no longer slide backwards. The contact was concerned that the front passenger was too close to the air bag system due to the seat malfunction. Additionally, the trunk door handle had malfunctioned, and the trunk door could not be opened from outside the vehicle. The contact stated that trunk door would not shut securely, and the front driver’s side headlight bulb had overheated and experienced charring inside the lens. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 70,000.
Low beams both stopped working, bulbs and fuses are fine.

Thank you.
Adult male had hand under the trunk lid getting ready to lift it open when the passenger door was closed (driver side door was already closed). There was a vacuum effect and the trunk lid slammed down on the hand. The hand was severely crushed but the skin wasn't broken and no bones were broken. If this had been a child or adolescent it probably would have been much more severe. This was a rental car. *tr

My new 2019 volkswagen s coupe has a significant turbo lag. So much so, that i do not feel safe driving the car. I was making a turn at an intersection and it was as though the car lost all power when i excellerated. It goes from no exceation when moving from stopped position to surging very fast upon the car ahead of me. I feel that this is a very serious issue and that my life may be at risk. It seems the accretion cannot be controlled!! This is a continuing problem when i am stopped and hit the excellerator to go forward . I don't know how much longer i can drive the car without a serious crash!!
2018 Beetle with 2.0 TSI. Vehicle is extremely well maintained and all work has been done by VW dealers. This is not our primary vehicle and, as a result, it only has about 8600 miles. Stopped at a store for a few minutes. Vehicle would not restart. Many fault lights appeared on the dash (e.g., battery, check engine, EPC). Pushed vehicle into another area of the parking lot where there was more room in case it needed to be towed. Waited a few minutes and tried to restart. Vehicle sputtered and seemed to be running on only 1 or 2 cylinders for a few seconds. Gave it a little gas, all lights went off, full engine power resumed. Sat there a few minutes evaluating engine performance, everything seemed fine. Decided to head to the dealership instead of going home. After about 2 miles engine stopped running. Many fault lights appeared including battery, EPC, check engine, and so many others I can’t even recall. Had almost no steering. Struggled to coast vehicle to shoulder. Weather was very hot and traffic was heavy, not a pleasant situation or place to get stranded. Waited a minute or two. Tried to restart. Vehicle coughed, sputtered, and shook like it was only running on 1 cylinder. Shut vehicle off and sat. Tried to restart 2 or 3 more times without success. On next attempt vehicle sputtered to life, lights went off, and full power resumed. Tested engine performance and it seemed fine. EPC light came on. Still heading to the dealership. Got another 1.5 miles or so. EPC and check engine light came on. Another engine failure. Super heavy traffic on a 6-lane highway. Luckily I had enough speed to coast off the road and into a dirt parking lot. Many fault lights on the dash. Waited a few minutes. Tried to restart vehicle, no luck. Vehicle was towed to closest VW dealership. Absolutely terrifying and horrific 3 hours.

Component or System Failure: The specific component that failed or malfunctioned in my 2015 VW Beetle 1.8T Classic PZEV is the timing belt, which caused bent valves resulting in the engine seizing up, rendering it inoperable. It is available for inspection upon request. Safety Implications: The failure of the engine posed a significant risk to my safety and the safety of others. When the engine failed while I was driving on the freeway, it resulted in a sudden loss of power and alarming knocking sounds. This sudden loss of power on a busy highway endangered my life and the lives of other drivers around me. Confirmation by Dealer or Service Center: The problem has been confirmed by a Volkswagen dealership. I had the vehicle towed to Bill marines Volkswagen dealership for diagnosis, and they assessed that the engine had "jumped time" and the valves were bent, rendering the car undrivable. Inspections by Manufacturer, Authorities, or Others: The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer or any other relevant authorities at this point. However, I have sought assistance and evaluation from a Volkswagen dealership, which is an authorized service center for the brand. They were the first to diagnose the catastrophic engine failure. Warning Lamps, Messages, or Symptoms: Prior to the engine failure, there were no warning lamps or messages indicating a problem. There were no noticeable symptoms or signs of an impending failure. The failure occurred suddenly while driving on the freeway, without any prior indication of trouble. Please let me know if there is any additional information or documentation required to assist with the investigation. This vehicle experiences faults with the camshaft advance system randomly. At 70,000 miles this seems to be abnormal. At times upon start up or slow speed operation the vehicle will stumble, misfire and the engine may stall if the rpms arent increased. Fault codes indicate a faulty camshaft sensor or solenoid valve. VW tells me this isn't covered by any emissions warranty and could be caused by dirty oil. My own searches on the internet have found multiple complaints about this issue with the 1.8 and 2.0 engine. Camshaft timing most certainly effects emissions and this part in my opinion would be able to function properly between oil changes. A slow speed engine stall could be dangerous due to the lack of power steering .

On Sept. 21, 2023, I was in my 2019 Beetle and pulled into a parking place at a store. When parked, I pressed the electric start button to shut off the vehicle. When the vehicle was shut off, I got out of the car to go into the store. Luckily, I turned my head in the direction of my vehicle and saw it rolling backwards out of the parking space. In a panic, I raced back to the vehicle and jumped into the car. At that point, I had realized that I had not placed the vehicle in Park when I parked the car and it was still in Drive. At that point, I reparked the car, this time placing it in Park before I shut off the vehicle. When I came home, I told my husband what happened. He said it should be impossible to shut off a vehicle when it is in Drive. We went outside and recreated the scenario. In summary, we were able to shut off the vehicle while it was in Drive - and - when the car was placed on a slight incline, it rolled backwards all by itself. There is no alarm warning the driver that the vehicle was left in Drive. The only warning is a small message that shows up on the dash that reads " Move selector lever to position p1". It is very easy not to notice this mesage. As I had an appointment scheduled at the dealer on Oct. 4, 2023 for my NYS inspection, I expressed my concern to Basil Volkswagen in Lockport, NY. They investigated my concern and concluded that the car can be shut off when in Drive and, if parked on an incline, it will roll backwards. They stated it was my fault as I left the car in Drive. On Oct. 5, 2023, I called Volkswagen Customer Care. Candace stated I would receive an email responding to my complaint in 24 hrs. No email was received. I think this is a serious safety issue as when the car was rolling backward, it could have hit someone or another vehicle. In my eyes, there should be a mechanism in place to prevent the driver from shutting off the vehicle if it is in Drive. At a minimum, there should be an audible alarm.

My VW Beetle has pushbutton start. The ignition can turn off when not in park. This was called a rollaway problem in keyed ignition models, but not pushbutton. I took it to dealer and they said not covered by warranty and no recall. This is as dangerous as in the keyed ignition model. I saw a report of a similar rollaway that VW refused to cover. Also, apparently pushed button while underway. Engine stopped while in traffic. Rolled to side of road and restarted without incident.
On October 21st I had a recall performed at Evansville D- Patrick for a 37M2 shift lever micro switch. Today Nov 5th I was leaving work, pulling out of the drive onto highway and once I got on the road the car lost motion and just rolled. Barely made it across the highway. I got across the street into another lot. Turned car off and back on. You can hear the throttle but tires would not move. It would not go into any gear. It wouldn’t even go into park. It would roll no matter what the gear shifter was in. The work they did was in the gear shifter. So whatever work they performed was not done right. The sensor was bad they installed possibly or they didn’t connect the linkage or cables of some sort back I’m thinking. To have that recall done then have an issue with it that has to do with going into park is very odd. Especially to have an issue like that after having the appointment so close. I plan to have it towed to dealership but they are already trying to say it’s not something they did. Everything I’ve looked at with the recall correlates with the gear shifter which is what I had issues with today. The car can not move and I barely made it across the road before a semi came. They should definitely be held accountable for covering the cost of repairs or fixing the recall correctly.

Key is stuck in the ignition and the car will not power off, not even after taking out the battery. Vw told me they had no idea how to help me and had never seen this happen before. When i look it up online, this is a common problem with beetles and jettas.
Key got stuck in the ignition and would not turn for it to power off. No release in the car to get the key out therefore the car would not shut off even with the battery disconnected.
Safety recall 23r1 was received yet vw and local dealership will not make repairs stating that their needs to be an investigation and/or i need to wait until i have issues. The notice states that it can "lead to a crash without warning". However, they insist that i continue to drive my car they have determined to be unsafe. The dealer says they have no knowledge of the recall and vw refuses to send parts to my local shop to have it fixed stating again that i need to wait until i have an issue. We have spent hours on the phone trying to get this resolved and vw continues to brush us off and telling us they will resolve it tomorrow. I drive 200-500 miles a day for work around the state and do not feel safe driving my car that could unknowingly crash at any moment. If this was not a safety concern, vw would not have issued a safety recall. Per their documents sent to national highway traffic safety administration: the camshaft lobe that can break off drives the brake vacuum pump, and if the problem occurs drivers would lose power assistance and suffer reduced engine performance.
