I recently purchased this used car and discovered that there is a recall on it. I made an appointment for the recall service. Prior to the appointment, the ABS warning light came on while driving the car. I took the car to University Volkswagen. They charged me for a diagnostic on the ABS system and have advised that the ABS module needs to be replaced and that I must have that done, before they can address the recall. I asked the service advisor if the issues with the ABS system were due to the recall issue, and he told me it was difficult to say. I escalated the issue, and they still tell me that I have to pay $3000 to replace the ABS module before they can do the recall work. It seems that if the ABS failure is due to the recall, that it should not be up to me to pay for the ABS module so that they can test the ABS module. Can you please help me with this situation, or advise me what steps to take next?

ABS MODULE HAS BEEN KNOWN TO BE DEFECTIVE ON THIS MODEL YEAR VOLKSWAGEN GTI. SOME VINS ARE NOT COVERED UNDER A RECALL EVEN THOUGH IT USES THE SAME ABS SYSTEM AND ABS MODULE THAT HAS BEEN KNOWN TO BE DEFECTIVE. ALL VINS THAT USE THIS ABS MODULE SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THIS RECALL AS THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD.

MY VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION SLOWING DOWN TO A RED LIGHT WHEN THE ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, AND BREAK LIGHTS CAME ON AT THE SAME TIME. I RAN DIAGNOSTICS AND ALL 4 ABS SENSORS FAILED. THIS LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THERE MIGHT BE A PROBLEM WITH THE GROUNDING CONNECTION OR THE ENTIRE ABS MODULE IS FAULTY. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE THE CAR MAY THINK THE TIRES ARE SKIDDING ON DRY PAVEMENT, COMPUTE A FALSE POSITIVE, AND CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. MY CAR HAS BEEN IN THE DEALERSHIP FOR ALMOST TWO WEEKS AND I WAS PROVIDED NO LOANER CAR IN THE MEAN TIME. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 VOLKSWAGEN GTI. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IDLING, THE RPMS REVVED TO A HIGHER LEVEL AND AN OIL LEAK WAS NOTICED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAR MAIN SEAL WAS LEAKING, WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO SURGE. THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 93,000.

I TOOK MY CAR TO GUNTHER VOLKSWAGEN IN FT LAUDERDALE, FL. MY AUTOMATIC DSG TRANSMISSION WAS NOT SHIFTING INTO GEAR ON MANY OCCASIONS AS I WAS DRIVING, PARKING STOPPED AT A LIGHT. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THIS PROBLEM HAD RESULTED IN SOME NEAR ACCIDENTS WITH OTHER CARS, AND ON TWO OCCASIONS I HAD HIT A POLE AND A WALL. THE NEAR ACCIDENTS WITH CARS HAD OCCURRED IN PARKING SITUATIONS AS WELL AS ON THE STREET AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS WHEN MY CAR WOULD NOT MOVE AND CARS BEHIND ME ALMOST HIT ME. ANOTHER OCCASION MY CAR WOULD NOT MOVE WHEN I WAS AT AN INTERSECTION WAITING FOR TRAFFIC TO CLEAR TO TURN LEFT, AND THE LIGHT CHANGED. WHEN THIS PROBLEM WAS OCCURRING THE SHIFT INDICATOR LETTERS IN THE ELECTRONIC DISPLAY WOULD FLASH WITH BOXES AROUND THEM. IT WAS DISCOVERED BY THE DEALER THAT THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM I WAS HAVING WAS THE SUBJECT OF A VOLUNTARY RECALL BY VOLKSWAGEN. I WAS TOLD THAT THE MECHATRONIC UNIT OF MY TRANSMISSION WOULD BE REPLACED UNDER THIS VOLUNTARY RECALL AS WELL AS THE OTHER FUSE RECALL. LATER IN THE DAY I WAS CALLED BY CAR DEALERSHIP AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE FUSE RECALL WORK WOULD BE DONE BUT THE TRANSMISSION RECALL WOULD NOT BE DONE BECAUSE MY CAR HAD A REBUILT TITLE. THE CAR HAD BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT WHERE IT SUSTAINED DAMAGE TO RIGHT FRONT SUSPENSION AND INSURANCE COMPANY HAD PAID OUT CLAIM AND DECLARED VEHICLE A TOTAL LOSS. I BOUGHT "SALVAGED" VEHICLE AND REPAIRED DAMAGE FOR UNDER $1,000 AND RETITLED (REBUILT) VEHICLE UNDER FLORIDA LAW. ACCORDING TO WHAT I HAVE READ ON NHTSA WEBSITE IF VEHICLE IS ON THE ROAD AND BEING DRIVEN AROUND MANUFACTURERS ARE REQUIRED TO PERFORM RECALL REPAIRS ON THEM. THE RECALL ON THIS TRANSMISSION ISSUE WAS SUBJECT OF AN INVESTIGATION BY NHTSA (ACTION NUMBER PEO9035) SEVERAL ACCIDENTS HAD OCCURRED BECAUSE OF IT BUT NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. VEHICLE HAS A RECALL FOR THE ABS MODULE, I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE VW OF MURIETTA CALIFORNIA DEALER TO GET THE RECALL TAKEN CARE OF ON 1/11/20 AND THEY CLAIMED THAT THEY ASSUMED THAT THE MODULE HAD ALREADY BEEN DONE AND THEY CLAIMED TO HAVE CONTACTED VW OF AMERICA TO CLEAR THE RECALL IN THE SYSTEM. THEN ON 4/10/20 I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE SAME DEALER FOR AN UNRELATED ISSUE AND MENTIONED THE STILL ACTIVE RECALL, THEY THEN PROCEEDED TO TELL ME THAT THE MODULE WAS UNABLE TO BE UPDATED AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY AN ESTIMATE OF $1800 TO FIX THE RECALL. ON 4/16/20 I CALLED VW OF AMERICA TO WHICH THEIR RESPONSE WAS THAT VW OF MURRIETA DID NOT HAVE AN OPEN CLAIM WITH THEM ABOUT MY VEHICLE. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ABS MODULE MALFUNCTIONED AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE CONTINUED INTERMITTENTLY UNTIL THE WARNING INDICATORS REMAINED ILLUMINATED AT ALL TIMES. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V913000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC, ESC). THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO GUNTHER VOLKSWAGEN OF FORT LAUDERDALE (1660 S STATE RD 7, FORT LAUDERDALE, FL 33317, (954) 797-1660) WHERE IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE ABS MODULE NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SERVICED PER THE RECALL BECAUSE INSUFFICIENT PCU GROUND CONNECTION WAS NOT DETECTED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE MODULE COULD NOT BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. WAS TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE AROUND A CURVE DURING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC AND HAD TO APPLY THE BRAKES PRETTY HARD ON THAT CURVE. THE ABS ACTIVATED VERY SHORTLY AND THEN WAS FOLLOWED BY THE ABS LIGHT AND TRACTION AND BRAKE LIGHT COMING ON WITH AN AUDIBLE CHIME AND THE TIRES THEN LOCKED UP, WHICH THEN CAUSED THE CAR TO START TO SPIN SIDEWAYS. LUCKILY WAS ABLE TO CORRECT IT BEFORE DISASTER. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON MANY OCCASIONS, BASICALLY WHENEVER THE ABS IS ENGAGED, THE SYSTEM IS DISABLED RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF NEEDING IT, VERY DANGEROUS. I DO NOT HAVE THE $1,000+ TO FIX THIS PROBLEM.

2009 75,000 MILES. ABS CONTROL MODULE FAILURE FOR THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS MY CAR WOULD INTERMITTENTLY THROW UP THE ABS AND TRACTION LIGHTS BUT THIS WOULD GO AWAY SHORTLY AFTERWARDS. I GET IN MY CAR ABOUT 30 MINUTES AND START DRIVING FOR MAYBE 1/16TH OF A MILE AND EVERYTHING JUST FREAKS OUT. SPEEDOMETER IS DROPPING TO ZERO (WHILE IN MOTION DOING ABOUT 15 MPH) AND FLUCTUATES ALL OVER BETWEEN 0 AND 20 MPH. BRAKE LIGHT IS ON. TRACTION LIGHT IS ON. ABS LIGHT IS ON. STEERING LIGHT IS ON. ABS BRAKES AND STABILITY CONTROL FAILURE, EVERY TIME THE ABS OR STABILITY CONTROL IS ACTIVATED THE SYSTEMS IMMEDIATELY FAIL AND DASH LIGHTS ALL TURN ON WITH THREE LOUD CHIMES. OTHER TIMES THE FAILURE HAPPENS DURING NORMAL DRIVING. POWER CYCLING THE VEHICLE RESETS EVERYTHING BUT THE FAILURE WILL SOON OCCUR AGAIN. THIS IS A WELL KNOWN PROBLEM WITH 2009 MODELS AND IN MY OPINION IS DANGEROUS -- ABS & STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM ARE CRITICAL TO SAFETY DURING EMERGENCY BRAKING. SOME TIME AGO I HAD TO USE THE BRAKES TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT, MY WHEELS ALL LOCKED UP AND MY VEHICLE BEGAN TO SKID SIDEWAYS -- NOT WHAT ONE WOULD EXPECT ON A VEHICLE THAT COMES WITH ABS BRAKES. MY CAR WAS AFFECTED BY THE 2017 RECALL FOR THE ABS MODULE. I WAS DRIVING AROUND A CORNER AND HIT BRAKES TO SLOW A LITTLE, THE ABS/TRACTION CONTROL/STEERING LIGHT(S) CAME ON AND MY BRAKES LOCKED MOMENTARILY CAUSE ME TO SLIDE. I CALLED LOCAL DEALER TO HAVE THE RECALL PERFORMED. THE DEALER STATED(AND VW AMERICA) THAT BECAUSE THEY WERE UNABLE TO PULL CODES FROM THE MODULE I WOULD NEED TO PAY TO REPLACE IT MYSELF AND THEN THEY COULD PERFORM THE RECALL. A NUMBER OF WARNING LIGHTS COME ON WHEN THE CAR IS TURNED ON AND SOUND ALARMS COME ON AND OFF WHILE DRIVING. THE STEERING WHEEL MOVES ON ITS OWN AT TIMES AND THE SPEEDOMETER DOES NOT WORK. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY LOCAL VW DEALER LOCATED IN COUNTRYSIDE IL (AUTOBARN) KNOWING THAT THERE IS A RECALL ON THE ABS SYSTEM. THE DEALER EXPLAINED THAT THE ABS MODULE WAS NOT WORKING AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT ($2,400) PARTS AND LABOR AND THAT THE RECALL DID NOT COVER WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE PART.

WHILE TAKING THE KIDS TO SCHOOL, MY TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT AND STEERING ASSIST LIGHT CAME ON FOLLOWED BY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND A LOSS OF DRIVE.AFTER TAKING THE VEHICLE TO AN OFFICIAL VW DEALERSHIP THEY SPENT 2 DAYS DIAGNOSING THE 6 PAGES OF FAULTS THAT CAME UP AND INFORMED ME THAT THE ABS MODULE HAS FAILED AND WILL REQUIRE REPLACEMENT.

ABS CODE 16352 PRESENT. CAR LOST CONSISTENT ELECTRONIC STEERING ASSISTANCE MAKING FOR VARYING STEERING WHEEL RESISTANCE DURING TURNING. MOST DASH INFORMATION (SPEED, FUEL GAUGE, ETC.) FLUCTUATED. THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED FOR ALL VW VEHICLES WITH ABS CONTROL MODULE ISSUES, NOT JUST SOME. I BROUGHT THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF VW AND WAS TOLD THAT THE SPECIFIC FAULT I THREW WAS NOT COVERED (UNDER EXISTING RECALLS) EVEN THOUGH ALL ABS CONTROL MODULE ISSUES RESULT IN EVENTUAL FAILURE OF DASH CLUSTER AS WELL AS OBVIOUS SAFETY CONCERNS (WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED RESULTING IN ONGOING COSTLY SHOP VISITS).

WITH IGNITION ON AND WHILE DRIVING ALL OF A SUDDEN 4-5-POSSIBLY 6 LIGHTS COME ON MY DASHBOARD A CHIME STARTS DINGING AND THE ABS,ESC,AIRBAG,EPC, BARKE PEDAL LIGHTS ILLUMINATE ON DASH ALONG WITH EITHER THE SPEEDO OR TACHOMETER START JUMPING. VEHICLE CAN BE STATIONARY OR DRIVING BUT VEHICLE MUST BE RUNNING.

I GOT A RECALL FOR THE ABS MODULE FOR MY 2009 VOLKSWAGEN GTI. WHEN I BROUGHT IT TO VOLKSWAGEN I WAS TOLD THE RECALL WENT THROUGH BUT THERE IS CODES THAT ARE NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL. WITH THAT BEING SAID I HAVE TO PAY 2,600 DOLLERS FOR A NEW ABS MODULE. I HAVE DONE RESEARCH AND IT SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE WITH MOST 2009 GTI'S WHY HASN'T THERE BEEN A RECALL ON THE ACTUAL MODULE ITS SELF SINCE SO MANY ARE HAVING ISSUES.

ON 11/14/2014, I PAID MY VW DEALER $1102 TO HAVE THE FAULTY ABS CONTROL MODULE REPLACED. AT THE TIME, MY CAR HAD 72,648 MILES ON IT. EARLY IN 2017, VW ANNOUNCED A RECALL OF SOME 2009 CARS OVER THE SAFETY ISSUE OF A FAULTY ABS COMPUTER. MY CAR WAS NOT LISTED IN THIS RECALL- BUT I BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE, AND I SHOULD BE COMPENSATED FOR MY REPAIR COSTS.

HELLO, I RECENTLY LEARNED ABOUT THE RECALL THAT VOLKSWAGEN HAS FOR 2009-2010 GTI'S. THE RECALL WAS FOR THE ABS CONTROL MODULE THAT CAUSED A SAFETY CONCERN TO OUR CARS. WHAT I CANNOT UNDERSTAND IS HOW MY FRIEND GOT A RECALL KETTER AND I DID NOT (WE HAVE THE SAME EXACT CARS).. MY ABS MODULE WENT OUT LAST YEAR AND I REMEMBER DRIVING ON THE ROADS EVERY DAY WITHOUT TRACTION, ESC CONTROL, PRETTY MUCH MY WHOLE DASH WAS LIGHTENED UP.. I AM A COLLEGE STUDENT AND HAD TO PAY 1600 DOLLARS OUT MY TUITION FUND JUST TO PAY FOR THIS PROBLEM THAT IS NOW A RECALL A YEAR LATER! I AM WONDERING IF VW FIGURED THAT MY CAR WAS GOOD AND THOUGHT I WOULDNT NEED A RECALL LETTER. VEHICLE HAS 140,455 MILES ON IT AND WAS WELL MAINTAINED. AT APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH HEARD LOUD SOUND AND HAD TOTAL ENGINE FAILURE. CAR WAS TOWED TO A VOLKSWAGEN SPECIALIST AND SAID THAT THE TIMING CHAIN THREW DUE TO THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER, A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THE 2.0 TSI ENGINES FROM 2008-2012. MINIMUM FOR REPAIR WOULD BE $4,000 DUE TO BENT VALVES; MAXIMUM WILL BE ENGINE REPLACEMENT (~$9,000). GIVEN CAR'S AGE AND VALUE, NEITHER OPTIONS ARE WORTH FIXING AND I WILL HAVE TO SELL CAR FOR PARTS. AFTER RESEARCHING ONLINE, THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER FAILURE IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH 2.0 TSI ENGINES YET VOLKSWAGEN DID NOT ISSUE A RECALL RELATED TO THE ISSUE.

FOR SEVERAL WEEKS, I NOTICED OCCASIONAL MISFIRES UPON STARTUP AND ACCELERATION. THEN, THE VEHICLE BEGAN RUNNING LOUDLY AND CONSUMING A LOT OF OIL. THE VEHICLE ALSO SHUDDERED WHILE DRIVING. ONE MORNING, THE CAR SHUDDERED AND BUCKED WHILE I ATTEMPTED TO START IT, AND ULTIMATELY FAILED TO START AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS. THE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THIS IS NOT A BATTERY ISSUE; THE BATTERY IS ONLY A FEW MONTHS OLD AND WAS TESTED IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS (HOLDS CHARGE AT 100%). I HAVE HAD THE CAR TOWED TO TWO MECHANICS AND THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS A TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER FAILURE LEADING TO CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE. ACCORDING TO THE FIRST MECHANIC, THE ENTIRE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED FOR APPROXIMATELY $4500. ACCORDING TO THE SECOND MECHANIC, THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER NEEDS REPLACING AND THE TOP HALF OF THE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED, LEADING TO A QUOTE OF $2800 FOR REPAIR. THE MECHANIC STATED TO ME THAT HE HAS ALREADY PERFORMED APPROXIMATELY 8 OF THESE REPAIRS ON VOLKSWAGENS IN THE LAST YEAR AND DIRECTED ME TO INVESTIGATE A PENDING NEW JERSEY LAWSUIT AGAINST VOLKSWAGEN FOR THE SAME ISSUE. THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON COMPLAINT. IF MY ENGINE HAD FAILED WHILE AT SPEED ON A ROADWAY IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.

The warning light went on engine oil pressure off. Search manual. Then it wouldn't start. But lights where on so we put a new starter. But it wouldn't turn the engine. So We thought it must be the battery needs a jump start. And then wire from battery to starter caught on fire? I Googled the problem, and found that there had been recalls for that faulty wire before.

THE 12 VOLT OUTLETS IN MY CAR AREN'T WORKING. WHEN I WENT TO CHECK THE FUSE, I DISCOVERED THAT THE DIAGRAM OF THE FUSE BOX PROVIDED BY VOLKSWAGON IN MY MANUAL DOES NOT MATCH THE ACTUAL FUSE BOX IN MY CAR. JUST LAST WEEK MY GTI STARTED HAVING ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS AND SOON REALIZED MOST 2009 GTIS EVENTUALLY HAVE THIS PROBLEM WITH THEIR ABS CONTROL MODULES. SOLID ABS, SOLID POWER STEERING LIGHT, SOLID CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, SOLID TRACTION CONTROL, AND FLASHING "BRAKE" LIGHTS WOULD ILLUMINATE ON THE DASHBOARD OCCASIONALLY UPON TURNING ON THE VEHICLE, ACCOMPANIED BY 3 AUDIBLE BEEPS. THEN, THE ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, BRAKE, EPC, STEERING, AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS BEGAN TO COME ON WHILE DRIVING. ABS AND TRACTION CONTROL STAY ILLUMINATED, WHILE THE EPC, STEERING, CHECK ENGINE, AND BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON INTERMITTENTLY, ACCOMPANIED BY 3 AUDIBLE BEEPS. THE MESSAGE "ENGINE FAULT - WORKSHOP!" TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 VOLKSWAGEN GTI. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ABS BRAKE MODULE MALFUNCTIONED. SEVERAL YEARS AGO, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO BE REPAIRED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V913000 (POWER TRAIN) BY HERITAGE VOLKSWAGEN PARKVILLE (9215 HARFORD RD, PARKVILLE, MD 21234, (877) 398-1963). AFTER A COUPLE OF DAYS, THE DEALER REFUSED TO PERFORM THE RECALL REPAIRS BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS SHOWING THE INCORRECT FAILURE CODES. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A SECOND RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL AND WAS INFORMED BY THE DEALER THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD BE REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKES STARTED GRINDING AND TWITCHING AND THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATED. IN ADDITION, THE SPEEDOMETER STOPPED WORKING, THE STEERING BECAME LOOSE, AND THE VEHICLE STOPPED ACCELERATING AFTER THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS INITIALLY DEPRESSED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE SAME DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE REPAIRS WOULD BE COVERED; HOWEVER, THEY LATER CALLED THE CONTACT BACK STATING THE RECALL REPAIRS WOULD NOT BE COVERED. THE INCORRECT FAILURE CODES WERE VAG00290 (DRIVER'S SIDE REAR ABS WHEEL SPEED SENSOR WITH MECHANICAL FUNCTION) AND VAG00285 (PASSENGER SIDE FRONT ABS SPEED SENSOR). THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE RECEIVED A LETTER FROM THE DEALER THAT THE RECALL HAD TO MATCH TWO OF THE SPECIFIC CODES, WHICH WAS WHY THE RECALL REPAIRS WERE NOT PERFORMED. THE CONTACT WAS INSTRUCTED TO CALL THE MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THEY WOULD CONTACT THE DEALER. THE CONTACT RECEIVED THE RUN AROUND FOR A WEEK WITH BOTH THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER, STATING THEY WERE WAITING TO HEAR FROM EACH OTHER. RECENTLY, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE RECALL REPAIRS WOULD NOT BE PERFORMED AND THE CONTACT MADE ARRANGEMENTS TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THEIR REPORT SAID "SMALL METAL SHARDS ABOUT THE SIZE OF A GRAIN OF SAND" IN THE TRANS FLUID, AND "IT APPEARS THE TRANSMISSION COMMUTER DID NOT DISENGAGE THE CLUTCH IN USE AS IT ENGAGED THE CLUTCH FOR THE NEXT GEAR AND TRIED RUNNING THE VEHICLE IN TWO GEARS AT THE SAME TIME AT CRUISING SPEED., WHICH IN TURN DAMAGED THE TRANSMISSION INTERNALLY AND DESTROYED THE DUAL CLUTCH FRICTION DISCS." I RECENTLY FOUND OUT THAT THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE ABS MODULE ON MY VEHICLE. ANOTHER DRIVER (NHTSA ID 10944646) INDICATED THAT WHEN HIS ABS MODULE FAILED, THAT HIS VEHICLE RANDOMLY DOWNSHIFTS TO FIRST GEAR, AND IS UNABLE TO SWITCH BACK. HE SAID "WHAT STARTS AS A SIMPLE BRAKE PROBLEM IS NOW AN UNDRIVEABLE CAR". IS THIS WHAT HAPPENED TO MY CAR? COULD MY ABS MODULE FAILURE CAUSE THE TRANSMISSION TO DOWNSHIFT WHILE TRAVELLING AT 45 MPH? SHOULD THE TRANSMISSION REPAIR BE INCLUDED IN THE ABS RECALL PROGRAM? THIS WAS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION, AND I HAD NO WARNING BEFORE IT HAPPENED. ALSO, IT WAS VERY HOT OUT, ABOUT 90 DEGREES, IF TEMPERATURE PLAYS A ROLE IN THIS SITUATION. 2009 89,000 MILES. ABS CONTROL MODULE FAILURE FOR THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS MY CAR WOULD INTERMITTENTLY THROW UP THE ABS AND TRACTION LIGHTS BUT THIS WOULD GO AWAY SHORTLY AFTERWARDS. I GET IN MY CAR ABOUT 30 MINUTES AND START DRIVING FOR MAYBE 1/16TH OF A MILE AND EVERYTHING JUST FREAKS OUT. SPEEDOMETER IS DROPPING TO ZERO (WHILE IN MOTION DOING ABOUT 15 MPH) AND FLUCTUATES ALL OVER BETWEEN 0 AND 20 MPH. BRAKE LIGHT IS ON. TRACTION LIGHT IS ON. ABS LIGHT IS ON. STEERING LIGHT IS ON. I PURCHASED MY 2009 GTI FEB 2015 AND THE CARFAX WAS GREAT; HOWEVER, THE ABS CONTROL MODULE RANDOMLY FAILED ABOUT TWO MONTHS LATER CAUSING LOSE OF STEERING AND CONTROL, THIS OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC AND IT WAS VERY SCARY. LOUD WARNING BEEPS WENT OFF AND WARNING LIGHTS STARTED FLASHING. THE WARNING LIGHTS CONTINUED FLASHING UNTIL I TURNED IT OFF. WHEN I RESTARTED THE ENGINE, THE WARNING LIGHTS WERE NO LONGER LIT AND DROVE IT HOME. I TESTED MY CAR AGAIN MINUTES AFTER ARRIVING HOME. I RESEARCHED MY VIN WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND AN INCOMPLETE SAFETY RECALL ON THE ABS MODULE. THAT RECALL NUMBER IS 16V913. BEFORE I COULD TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT THE ABS MODULE FAILED. THE VOLKSWAGEN DEALER IN TACOMA, WASHINGTON CHARGED ME A DIAGNOSTIC FEE BECAUSE THE MODULE FAILED COMMUNICATION, IN WHICH THEY FOUND THE MODULE DID INDEED FAIL, BUT THEY WOULD NOT REPLACE IT BECAUSE THEY CLAIM IT WASN'T COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY OR THE RECALL. THEY SUBMITTED A SECONDARY CLAIM TO VW OF AMERICA TO TRY TO HAVE THEM APPROVE THE CLAIM WHICH WAS ALSO DENIED. I AM REACHING OUT TO HOPEFULLY GET HELP WITH GETTING MY VEHICLE FIXED AND ONCE AGAIN SAFE TO DRIVE. ATTACHED WILL BE A COPY OF THE INVOICE FROM THE DEALER AND THEIR FINDINGS.

WHEN BRAKING HARD TODAY (IT WAS RAINING AND I GOT CUT OFF BY A DISTRACTED DRIVER) MY CAR WENT INTO A (BARELY) CONTROLLED SKID. ABS, ESP. STEERING WHEEL LIGHTS ALL FLASHING WITH THREE BEEPS. THE LIGHTS WENT AWAY WHEN I TURNED THE CAR OFF/ON. MY WIFE IS 7 MONTHS PREGNANT, AND WAS WITH ME IN THE CAR. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V913000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic, Electronic Stability Control). Upon reprogramming the ABS module, the dealer informed the contact the ABS module failed the diagnostic test and needed to be replaced; however, the dealer informed the contact that he had to pay for the repair even though the recall remedy stated that the ABS module replacement was free of charge. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 17,000.

ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT ON A CITY STREET IN DRY CONDITIONAT A STEADY SPEED THE ESC LIGHT ON MY DASH CAME ON AND WOULD NOT GO OUT UNTIL I HAD PARKED THE CAR FOR SOME TIME AND RESTARTED IT. THE LIGHT THEN CAME BACK ON AGAIN AFTER ABOUT 5 MINUTES OF DRIVING, THIS TIME IT WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT WHICH BEGAN TO FLASH ORANGE, THEN WAS SOLID ORANGE AND THEN FLASHED BETWEEN ORANGE AND RED. WHEN THE ELECTRIC STEERING LIGHT IS ORANGE THE STEERING ASSISTANCE IS REDUCED WHEN STRAIGHTENING AFTER CORNERING, HOWEVER WHEN IT IS RED THERE IS NO POWER ASSISTANCE AND THIS CONDITION CAN HAPPEN AT ANY SPEED AND AT ANYTIME WITHOUT WARNING. AFTER ALL THE LIGHTS WENT OUT THE VEHICLE SEEMED TO BE OK UNTIL I ATTEMPTED TO PULL OUT OF A GAS STATION AT WHICH TIME WITH THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE I PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR AND THE REVS WENT UP BUT THE VEHICLE DID NOT MOVE UNTIL THE THIRD ATTEMPT. I HAVE READ ON LINE THAT THIS MAYBE A RESULT OF AN ABS MODULE FAILURE BUT MY VIN DOESN'T PULL UP ANY RECALLS AND MY VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE SHIFTED GEARS IN MOTION WHILE DRIVING ON CITY STREETS. PARKED THE CAR IN MAY OF 2017 AND HAVEN'T DRIVEN IT SINCE. I SUBMITTED A COMPLAINT LAST YEAR WITH COMPLAINT #: 10907462. SUMMARY OF THE UNEXPECTED ABS MODULE BREAKDOWN THAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR. THE MODULE BROKE DOWN THE FIRST TIME ON 09/06/216 ON MY WAY TO WORK AND IT OCCURRED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. I SLOWED DOWN THE SPEED TO AROUND 45 AFTER I LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WHEN IT HAPPENED AND THE LIGHTS AND BEEPING DID NOT STOP WITH THE ENGINE LIGHT TURNED ON. THE CAR WAS EVENTUALLY TOWED AND REPAIRED (PAID OUT OF POCKET) AT VW DEALERSHIP. AFTER SEARCHING ONLINE, THE ABS MODULE APPARENTLY HAS BEEN A PROBLEM ON GTI AND GLI JETTA. MOST RECENTLY, THERE IS A RECALL ON THE ABS MODULES ON CERTAIN VW VEHICLES; HOWEVER MY CAR WAS NOT ONE OF THEM EVEN THOUGH IT IS THE SAME PART THAT ALMOST CAUSED ME A CAR CRASH ON THE HIGHWAY! WHEN I STARTED THE VEHICLE AFTER IT HAD SAT FOR A WEEK WITHOUT STARTING, WARNING LIGHTS APPEARED FOR ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, AND BRAKES. I DROVE IT AROUND THE BLOCK TO TEST THINGS OUT, AND THINGS SEEMED TO BE RUNNING PRETTY MUCH LIKE NORMAL, SO I DROVE IT TO A MECHANIC. THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTIC, AND 8 CODES CAME UP, ALL HAVING TO DO WITH THE ABS SYSTEM. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE ABS CONTROL MODULE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. I DIDN'T WANT TO DO THE REPAIRS AT THAT MECHANIC, SO THEY TOLD ME I COULD DRIVE THE CAR, BUT THAT I WOULDN'T HAVE ABS OR TRACTION CONTROL. UPON DRIVING IT A FEW MILES, THE LIGHTS TURNED OFF, AND EVERYTHING WAS FUNCTIONING AS NORMAL. WHEN I STARTED IT THE NEXT DAY, THE LIGHTS WERE BACK ON, BUT I DECIDED TO DRIVE IT TO WORK, BASED ON WHAT THE MECHANIC HAD TOLD ME. ABOUT A MILE DOWN THE ROAD, THE SPEEDOMETER STOPPED WORKING, AND THE CAR THEN BEGAN TO CHANGE GEARS AT RANDOM, WHICH PRESENTED AN ALL NEW SAFETY RISK. AT THIS POINT I ALSO LOST POWER STEERING. I MANAGED TO PULL OVER AND TURN OFF THE CAR. WHEN I STARTED THE CAR AGAIN, JUST THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS WERE ON, SO I DECIDED TO DRIVE HOME, CONSIDERING I WAS ONLY ABOUT A MILE AWAY. EVERYTHING WAS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY ON THAT DRIVE. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES BEGINNING IN MARCH, 2018. EPC LIGHT COMES ON (SEEMINGLY) RANDOMLY. OCCASIONALLY, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT/SERVICE ENGINE NOW WARNING WILL ALSO COME ON. SOMETIMES THEY ALL SHUT OFF AFTER LETTING THE CAR SIT OVERNIGHT. EPC LIGHT COMES ON SOMETIMES WHEN WE TURN THE CAR ON AND SOMETIMES WHILE DRIVING. WE HAVE HAD THREE INCIDENTS WHERE WE TRY TO GET ONTO THE INTERSTATE (70MPH) AND CAN'T GET ABOVE APPROX 40MPH. I'VE ALMOST BEEN REAR-ENDED TWICE BECAUSE OF THIS. ON ANOTHER OCCASION, I COULDN'T GET THE TURBO TO KICK IN. SO, DRIVING AT 65MPH AGAIN ON THE INTERSTATE, I COULDN'T GET UP HILLS AND WOULD END UP AT APPROX 55PMH BY THE TIME I REACHED LEVEL GROUND. AGAIN, CARS SWERVING TO GET AROUND ME. MY HUSBAND HAS HAD A COMPLETE LOSS OF CONTROL OF ACCELERATION AND HAD TO COAST OVER ONTO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I HAD IT HAPPEN ONCE AT A STOP LIGHT, TAKING A LONG TIME AND A LOT OF COAXING OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL JUST TO GET UP TO 40MPH. THESE ALL HAPPENED ON STRAIGHT STRETCHES OF ROAD AND NORMAL WEATHER CONDITIONS. RESTARTING THE CAR MAY OR MAY NOT RESET THE ACCELERATION ISSUE AND THE EPC LIGHT. COMPUTER SCAN FROM VW DEALER SHOWED THROTTLE BODY SENSOR, SO WE REPLACED THAT WITH SAME SYMPTOMS AFTER A COUPLE OF DAYS. THEN, COMPUTER SAYS IT'S ACCELERATOR PEDAL SENSOR. REPLACED ALSO WITH SAME RESULTS. REPLACED SPARK PLUGS, AIR FLOW SENSOR, CLEANED OTHER SENSORS, STILL THE SAME. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. I SEE IN FORUMS THAT WE ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES. IT IS EXPENSIVE TO KEEP CHASING THE PROBLEM BUT LIVES ARE AT RISK. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET SERIOUSLY HURT BECAUSE THEIR LIMP CARS CAN'T KEEP UP WITH TRAFFIC. VW SEEMS STUMPED. THEN, THE ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, BRAKE, EPC, STEERING, AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS BEGAN TO COME ON WHILE DRIVING. ABS AND TRACTION CONTROL STAY ILLUMINATED, WHILE THE EPC, STEERING, CHECK ENGINE, AND BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON INTERMITTENTLY, ACCOMPANIED BY 3 AUDIBLE BEEPS. THE MESSAGE "ENGINE FAULT - WORKSHOP!" ALSO SHOWS UP ON THE MESSAGE DISPLAY CENTER IN THE DASH. IN ADDITION, WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION, THE SPEEDOMETER WILL REPEATEDLY ALTERNATE BETWEEN THE ACTUAL SPEED READING AND A READING OF 0 MPH. WHEN THE SPEEDOMETER DROPS TO 0 MPH, THE ENGINE RPMS INCREASE. FINALLY, THE CAR SPUTTERS AND BUCKS WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE RAPIDLY, AND STEERING FEELS A BIT STIFF. THE DEALER HAS INDICATED AN INTERNAL FAULT IN THE ABS CONTROL MODULE.

ONE OF THE HID HEADLAMP STOPPED WORKING CAUSING THE BULB FAIL WARNING LIGHT ON THE DASH TO BE ILLUMINATED. I WENT TO THE AUTO PARTS STORE AND BOUGHT A NEW BULB. UPON REMOVAL OF THE BULB ACCESS COVER I FOUND THAT ALL THE INSULATION ON ALLOF THE WIRING IN THE HEADLIGHT UNIT TO HAVE DISINTEGRATED CAUSING THE BARE WIRES TO TOUCH AND SHORT OUT. I THEN INSPECTED THE OTHER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND FOUND THE EXACT SAME CONDITION. UPON CONTACTING THE DEALER I WAS TOLD THAT AS THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY I WOULD HAVE TO PURCHASE TWO NEW HEADLAMP UNITS AT A COST OF $500 PER UNIT. I THEN CONTACTED VWOFA ( CUSTOMER CARE REF #[XXX]) ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT AGAIN BEING OUT OF WARRANTY IT WAS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO INCUR THE REPAIR COSTS. AS THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 60K AND THIS IS NOT ONLY A SAFETY ISSUE BUT POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS AND A MANUFACTURING DEFECT PLEASE INVESTIGATE. TAKATA RECALL MY VOLKSWAGEN HAS MANY PROBLEMS THAT I BELIEVE ARE FACTORY DEFECTS. STARTING WITH THE AIRBAG FAULT WARNING THAT COMES ON AS SOON AS I START THE VEHICLE. THEN ITSTARTED LOOSING COOLANT TO TBE POINT THAT K WAS HAVING TO PULL OVER EVERY 30-50 MILES TO PUT MORE. AND THIS ONLY HAPPENS WHEN THE ENGIN HAS BEEN RUNNING FOR ABOUT 5 MINS. THEN THE CHECK COOLANT COMES ON AND SHORTLY AFTER IT SAYS CHECK OIL PRESSURE TURN OFF ENGINE. IVE HAD TO PUT MORE WORK INTO THIS CAR THAN WHAT ITS WORTH. THE HEADLIGHTS TURN OFF RANDOMLY THE BRIGHTS DONT WORK OR WHILE IM DRIVING ONE WILL TURN OFF OR BOTH AT THE SAME TIME AND THIS HAPPENS ANYWHERE IF MY CAR IS IN MOTION. . THE IMAGE BELOW THAT SHOWS THE RADIATOR CONNECTOR THAT HAS KB WELD ON IT BECAUSE MY ENGINE GOT SO HOT THAT THE TOP HOSE BROKE OFF CAUSING A DOMINO EFFECT OF PROBLEMS ANLONG WITH COSTLY REPAIRS.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V913000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC, ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 95,120.

WHILE PULLING INTO A GAS STATION AFTER LEAVING A STOP LIGHT, THE STEERING WHEEL MOUNTED BUTTONS AND LIGHTS (HORN, STEERING WHEEL, ETC) FLICKERED OFF WHEN TURNING. AT THAT POINT, THE BUTTONS FAILED TO WORK UNLESS THE WHEEL WAS TURNED ALMOST TO FULL LOCK CLOCKWISE. IT TOOK ABOUT A DAY OF DRIVING UNTIL THE AIRBAG LIGHT FINALLY CAME ON TELLING ME THERE WAS A FAULT. FURTHER INVESTIGATION LED TO A FAULTY AIRBAG CLOCKSPRING. ON 4 AUG 2012 AT ABOUT 2:15PM MY WIFE EXPERIENCED A FAILURE OF HER RIGHT (PASSENGER SIDE) REAR TIRE. THE TIRE IS A DUNLOP SP SPORT 01 AS 225/40R18. THE CAR WAS BEING DRIVEN AT ABOUT 35 MPH ON SURFACE STREETS. MY WIFE HEARD A "POP" NOISE AND NOTICED THAT THE TIRE INFLATION WARNING CAME ON. SHE IMMEDIATELY CALLED ME AND AAA. THEY PUT ON THE FULL-SIZED SPARE. WHEN I INSPECTED THE TIRE THE INSIDE SIDEWALL SHOWED A "SPLIT" IN ONE OF THE SEAMS. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME TYPE OF FAILURE (INSIDE SIDEWALL SHOWED A "SPLIT" IN ONE OF THE SEAMS) WITH THE SAME TIRE TYPE (DUNLOP SP SPORT 01 AS 225/40R18) ON 1 JUNE 2012. THAT TIME THE CAR WAS BEING DRIVEN ON A HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH. THAT TIME THE RIGHT FRONT (PASSENGER) TIRE FAILED. THIS IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE! HERE IS WHAT HAPPENS: WHEN THE ENGINE TEMPERATURE IS COOL, IT HAS NO PROBLEM TO TURN IT ON. BUT WHEN THE ENGINE IS ALREADY WARMED UP (E.G., AFTER DRIVE 15 MIN ON THE FREEWAY), AND YOU TURN IT OFF. I HAVE A 2009 VW GTI THAT IS ONLY 3 MONTHS OLD. THE REAR BRAKELIGHT IN THE SPOILER IS FILLED WITH MOISTURE AND DOES NOT GO AWAY. I WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO CHANGE THIS BULB OUT EASILY WHEN IT FAILS BECAUSE IT WILL IF MOISTURE REMAINS TRAPPED. HOWEVER THE FACTORY MANUAL WARNS THAT THIS IS A MULTI-DAY JOB AND MAY RESULT IN A BROKEN SPOILER AND POSSIBLE BODY DAMAGE. THIS APPEARS TO BE A VIOLATION OF FMVSS 108 WHICH REQUIRES THAT REPLACING THE BULBS BE SIMPLE AND REQUIRE ONLY COMMON TOOLS. THIS IS AN ISSUE ON ALL 2006 - 2009 VW GTI AND R32 CARS. *TR
