Subject: Request for Investigation and Recall – Door Handle Failure on Volkswagen Vehicle Dear National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, I am writing to formally request an investigation and potential recall concerning a serious safety issue with my 2022 ID.4 AWD Pro S Volkswagen vehicle. The problem involves the door handles failing to open from either the inside or outside of the vehicle. I can provide video evidence showing that, while the vehicle is fully unlocked, with no child safety mechanisms engaged and my foot on the brake at a complete stop, the doors cannot be opened from either the front or rear seats. This issue occurs repeatedly—approximately four to five times per week—and has become more frequent since the “919” recall was performed on the vehicle. Despite this, the dealership has stated that the issue is a “non-issue,” claiming that other vehicles of the same model exhibit similar behavior. The inability to open a vehicle door in normal operating conditions is a serious safety concern that could endanger occupants in an emergency situation. Volkswagen’s response minimizes a clear risk to consumer safety. If the software controlling door operation cannot be relied upon to perform such a critical function, it should be removed or replaced with a mechanical mechanism that guarantees the ability to open the door at all times. I respectfully request that the NHTSA investigate this matter and determine whether a recall or corrective action is warranted. Thank you for your attention to this important safety concern. Please let me know if additional documentation or video evidence would be helpful to your investigation. Sincerely, [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S AWD [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 is impacted by three separate recalls. I scheduled repair at my only local dealership. On the day of appointment, I was turned away by the dealer, stating that only one EV (electric vehicle) mechanic was employed, and he had been assigned other tasks. No reasonable accommodation was made by the dealer or manufacturer to resolve, leaving my recalls unresolved.

Manufacturer has failed to fix the recall problem in a timely manner. There is a long wait list at every dealership to get the recall fixed and no dealership knows when they will get the door handles in. Recall 57J9- Door Handles

My cars screen which is digital and radio screen went blank , I couldn't see anything such as speedometer and could not control my climate air conditioning to clear the windshield. I was able to pull over to the side of the road and turned off my car then when I turned the car back on,,, the screen restarted like a computer and I was able to drive safely.. it happened two times on July and August 2024. My car is brand new when I got it and has approximately 22K mile when it happened, it 25K mile now. I took it to the Volkswagen dealership it they did not take my car to diagnose because they said that their is recall already regarding the issue and their is no fix available at that time ...

My complaint is that VW has not fixed a recall in a timely manner. I am writing in reference to recall number 24v344. This is a software recall that was initiated almost 4 months ago and has not been addressed. This diminishes the value of the vehicle and makes it unusable for my purposes. In addition, there is a second new recall for #24V651. This is the second time there have been issues with the door handles and possible water ingress. There was a previous recall on this issue which required inspection by the dealer and my vehicle was not affected. VW has had plenty of time to address this issue since the same issue was present on the last recall. I use this vehicle in a rental business with Turo. I am unable to rent a vehicle with any open recalls.

I was turning into a parking spot in front of the entry doors to a Sheetz convenience store. I was slowing down, and had gotten halfway into the space. All of a sudden, the car surged forward, went over the curb and hit the bollard in front of the parking space. It was hit with such force that the bollard bent and went under our car. My memory is that I was pressing on the brake very hard, once the acceleration started. My husband was in the car with me and can attest to all that I have stated. If that bollard had not been there, and stopped my car, I feel certain that my car would have crashed into the store, seriously injuring (or killing) us and those inside the store. We are planning to report the accident to Volkswagen, and to request that they test the "black box" inside the car, to see if they can find out what went wrong. I have spoken to someone in the Sheetz corporate office , and she told me that they have a video recording of the event. She said she observed my car entering the parking space very slowly, and that the car suddenly accelerated. She is planning to provide that video to State Farm Insurance, our insurance company. Unfortunately, I did not take pictures, myself, of the damage to the front of the car. But we will be requesting that the collision repair shop take pictures before the car gets dismantled for repair. We do not recall hearing any warning signals of the impending crash, and certainly did not experience any emergency braking. The airbags did not deploy.

Crash: 1
Vehicle suffers from unintended and sudden acceleration when the "resume' capacitive touch button is accidentally brushed against. The vehicle is subject to injure or kill the vehicles occupants or others struck by the vehicle. Vehicle advised there is "no issue" with the vehicle but they did acknowledge the problem with the design of the steering wheel. The issue is intermittent and has occurred while driving at slow speeds in parking lots when the steering wheel is frequently turned more than 90 degrees and a body part can unintentionally touch the 'Resume" button.
Jul 28, 2024
This is a repetitive intermittent issue. The ACC will engage without any command to do so. I have been to the dealer several times, but they have not been able to duplicate the issue. Because I never know when this will occur, I drive with caution. When I realize this is happening, of course I brake, and the ACC disengages as it should. These incidents are somewhat hazardous, as I am expecting to slow down, and I don't. I am certain that I do NOT in any way engage the ACC or press the "set" button on my steering wheel.

After using adaptive cruise control, driver pulled into a spot to pick up a pizza. Car was parked then lurched forward without pedal input, jumping over parking parking block and then crashed through front window of a store. Took out retaining wall and came to a stop at the back wall. Thankfully no one was injured. Police report was filed and manufacturer was alerted who interrogated the vehicle but claimed nothing found to be wrong. Vehicle was totaled and damages were paid. A number of other similar incidents have been reported with this vehicle so we felt it necessary to alert.

Crash: 1
While driving with the adaptive cruise control enabled at 60 mph, I entered a 65 mph speed zone, so I attempted to increase my speed setting pressing the “+” control a couple times on the steering wheel, which should added 2 to 10 mph to the current setting, depending upon how firmly I pressed (+1 for light, +5 for firm press). Instead, it increased to 100! As fast as this car is, it could have been well above the limit in seconds so I furiously hit the “-“ button until getting to 65, but the speedometer showed that the car was only going around 47 mph. Clearly, something was wrong, so for safety, I disabled the speed control entirely. After resuming a safe speed, I looked again at the display and realized the problem. The adaptive cruise control display had switched on its own to displaying the speed setting in kilometers per hour, while the speedometer continued to display in miles per hour. The danger here is that it caused confusion and minor panic while driving on a 65 mph highway. Thankfully, I kept my head and the traffic was light, so in the end, there was no damage done. Once off the highway and on a quiet street, I was able to capture a photo of the display. I tried turning the car off and on and rebooting the infotainment display, but neither corrected the problem. I found that going into settings and switching my preference for speed display from miles to kilometers, then back again resolved the issue.

Brand new Volkswagen electric vehicle model ID.4 Pro AWD delivered to us in July 2022 after order was placed in summer 2021 and it was built and shipped from Germany. Tires were manufactured in Poland and came installed with the vehicle. Both front tires (Bridgestone Alenza Sport A/S Size 235/55R19 105T) exhibit rubber peeling where chunks of rubber fall off the tire after only about 1.25 year of driving and approximately 15,000 miles. This presents a safety concern. VW no longer installs these tires as OEM as they switched to Pirelli Scorpion Zero or Kumho Crugen starting with model year 2023. Only first two ID.4 model years of 2021 and 2022 are affected. Note there has already been a recall on Alenza Sport A/S tires but not this exact model per NHTSA Campaign number 22T021000 recalling Bridgestone Alenza Sport A/S tires, size 235/55R20 102V (DOT date codes 2422 through 2722). VW blames Bridgestone as the tire manufacturer and Bridgestone blames VW as they claim they manufactured the tires to Volkswagen specifications. Neither will take full responsibility. The vehicle comes with staggered tires and the back tires are the same but different size (Bridgestone Alenza Sport A/S Size 255/50R19 107T). I am requesting that the NHTSA approve a recall of the OEM tires on VW ID.4 2021 and 2022 model years as described herein. This peeling manufacturer defect is a well documented issue online in different ID.4 owner forums: [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I understand Tesla started this trend of reducing horsepower based on the car's State Of Charge; however, there's times when having access to full horsepower can help collisions, especially rear end collisions. My car gets full horsepower when it's SOC is at 90-100%. Then is gets less as the SOC gets lower. It should get 100% horsepower regardless of SOC when stepping down on the pedal 100% to where I can fell a switch is being pressed. At freeway on ramps when I'm trying to merge, when my car's SOCis at 30%, it drives slower than at 80% and more obvious at 100%.
Oct 12, 2025
When my car starts in ECO mode, meaning ECO mode was the last setting on my last drive, the car appears to drive in ECO mode given the pedal's delay in power; however, on freeways, it can easily go pass 80mph, which it isn't supposed to. Then when I change my car mode to any other mode after starting my car in ECO mode, so Comfort, Sport, etc, and then switching back to ECO mode, I noticed the pedal now has more resistance then it did before. It feels like now, it's 100% ECO mode because I get way better efficiency now. For example, yesterday, when I drove to work and my car started up on ECO mode, it took 6% to get to work. Today, after starting up my car when it is already in ECO mode from the last drive, then switching to comfort or sport mode, then back to ECO mode, it took 4% to get to work. Both drives are on the same road, same speed limit and AC set at 70F for the entire drive for both days.

While exiting/entering from one highway to another, I was slowing down vehicle in curved ramp area to approximately 35mph from 65mph. The car's driver display (a warning banner) indicated that I had insufficient battery and that I should stop the vehicle. The battery was at 65%. I coasted vehicle to right shoulder of road. Steering was difficult. This area of highway access was under construction and I had a very limited space to stop car. The car then lost drive and stopped. Although I was in a narrow shoulder area, there were cars traveling behind me in ramp area. I put on hazard lights as a warning of my stopped vehicle so I would avoid getting hit. I waited 1 minute to re-start vehicle. Car re-started without faults or warning indicators and I was able to travel home.

I took the car to the Dealership for recalls (#1 Cochoran VW, Wexford, PA) on [XXX]. The dealership has not been able to complete the repair and the car has been at the dealership for almost three months. The dealership employees have been in contact with Volkswagen of America and with individuals in Germany but to no satisfaction. We have spent several hundred dollars on gasoline that we would not have spent as the car in question is an EV (VW ID-4 Model year 2022 with 31,000 miles. We are now fearful that the car will be returned to us in an unsafe condition and are even fearful to get NHTSA involved as the company may hurriedly return the vehicle to us without completing the "RECALL". The dashboard and user interface for the vehicle resets, crashes, reboots, crashes and reboots while driving constantly. The dash and entire console is affected. We have had it serviced at least three times for this issue and it has not been remedied even though VW has done full module replacements. The doors also unlock and lock and unlock and lock repeatedly. We no longer feel safe driving the vehicle because the center console will not remain on for more than a few minutes before starting a crash-reboot cycle.

My backup camera does not work and hasn't worked for almost a year. There is no solution, and it just now got recalled today, but there is no fix. It is incredibly dangerous to drive this car with the reduced size of the rear window plus wide, oversized quarter panels, and no backup camera. Add to this the fact that my driver's side door doesn't open. Not when I'm trying to get in to it and often when I'm trying to get out. I climb over the passenger seat every single time I want to get into the car and sometimes when I want to get out.

On March 8, 2023 our VW ID.4 (2022) became unsafe and un-drivable after we experienced several alarming malfunctions that threaten driver and passenger safety including: (1) driver door suddenly opening while driving, (2) driver trapped in vehicle as a result of the driver door failing to open (earlier that same day), (3) vehicle suddenly and immediately beginning to move on its own without pressing the accelerator as soon as it was placed in reverse. The dealership's service manager confirmed all of the above findings and further informed us that unintended forward acceleration was also observed by them during their testing of the vehicle. Any one of these issues would be cause for great concern but taken together they have shaken my confidence in the ID.4 as a safe, road-worthy vehicle within which I can transport my wife and child. No vehicle should ever exhibit these types of alarming safety defects let alone one driven for only 6 months with less than 3500 miles on the odometer.

Oct 9th 23 - My wife pulled into the office parking lot , and as she braked after parking the car. Post braking suddenly she realized the car was morning forward and it hit the car parked in front of her slot. The car being driven in the B mode , so it could recharge. The front bumper and grill were damaged incurring a loss of $ 6,972.76. Fortunately did ot cause ay bodily injury to either me or other people in the parking lot. June 6th 24 - I pulled into the grocery store parking lot, and as i braked and parked the car, i noticed the very same phenomenon , after stopping suddenly i realize that the car went over the curb of the parking lot, hit the car parked next to me and then jumped to the otherside of the road and i had to steer into the next parking lot. Again causing severe damage to my car as well as the car parked next to me. Fortunately there was nobody walking in the parking lot, or no other car that was entering the parking lot, for as the car jumped the curb it could lead to a very fatal accident.

Crash: 1
When pressing on the brake pedal while while the car is using ACC and slowing down for traffic ahead the car lessons the amount of regenerative braking applied. This dangerous situation occurs whenever added breaking is needed for slowing traffic beyond what the car is automatically applying for ACC. The reduction in vehicle breaking when depressing the pedal makes a collision more likely, and makes the car feel like it's lurching forward.

Was backing into my driveway and the brake pedal went hard and almost backed in to my garage. All kinds of warning starting popping on and a message appeared "Brake Booster is Limited". I only stopped the vehicle by pressing really hard but since I was already moving slow the vehicle came to a stop. If I would have been driving in regular traffic I would have never ben able to stop. EXTERIOR LIGHTING
4 complaints
The seals/bonding on the rear right tail light assembly failed under normal use. Water has recently accumulated in the assembly and caused part of the taillight to stop functioning. In addition to apparent defect in integrity of the light housing, it is likely that there is a secondary defect in the conformal coating that lead to the water being able to damage the light. The internal light monitoring feature also did not detect the failed light element until several days after we identified it was broken. Dealer is attempting to reject coverage for something that should clearly fall under manufacturing and workmanship warranty.

During a recent trip to Oregon, my Volkswagen ID.4 experienced a critical failure of both the interior and exterior lighting systems, including the headlights and emergency lights. Initially, upon returning from a walk, I found the lights were on despite the vehicle being locked and not in the "Auto" mode as I had left them. Locking and unlocking the vehicle did not resolve the issue. When I entered the vehicle, a warning light indicating a malfunction in the lighting system appeared on the dashboard, and subsequently, all lights stopped functioning entirely. This malfunction posed a significant safety risk to both myself and other road users, as the failure occurred during a time when proper lighting was essential for visibility and safety, potentially leading to a dangerous situation, especially as it was almost evening. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center at this time. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or other relevant parties, although a video recording of the incident is available for review and is attached to the report in the PDF file. Prior to the failure, there were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms indicating a potential issue. However, during the incident, a warning light for a lighting system malfunction appeared on the dashboard.

There is a band or reduced brightness between the low beams and high beams leading to a worse lit section of the surroundings while drinving. On 5/13/2023, I drove using adaptive cruise control (ACC). I traveled approximately 9 miles without issues and turned left into a parking lot. Upon turning, the break was engaged and which canceled the cruise control. I do not recall the exact speed it was set but it was over 50mph. I drive my VW ID.4 in B mode which is brake energy recuperation mode and brakes the car as soon as the foot is lifted from the accelerator. In the parking lot, I was driving at a slow rate of speed because it was a Saturday morning and there were lots of kids going to the Jui Jitsu gym and dance studio which was my destination. While navigating at this slow speed, I typical lift my foot off of the accelerator rather than tapping the brakes as it is an effective method in the B driving mode. I was turning right into a spot, my foot was on the accelerator because there is not coasting in this mode to turn into the spot. As I was turning the wheel hard to the right, my hand grazed the capacitive controls of the ACC and resumed the cruise control causing my car to suddenly accelerate at the previously set speed into the curbing. As mentioned, my foot was on the accelerator as I was pulling into the spot. When the car crashed into the sidewalk the impact caused my foot to depress further on the accelerator which caused a secondary impact into a support pillar further on the sidewalk. Fortunately, the pillar was there, otherwise, I would have crashed through the yoga studio directly behind the pillar which had a full class going. I also narrowly missed a father and son walking on the sidewalk to Jui Jitsu. I notifed VW and they analyzed the black box but claimed the accident to be my fault since the accelerator pedal was engaged, and I did not break until after impact. I do not dispute that.

Two days ago I was pulling into a parking spot in a shopping center. The car suddenly accelerated forward and I hit a concrete parking block. This is the third time over the past 7 months that this has occurred, where the car suddenly accelerates when in a low speed. After the first time it happened, I called the dealership to ask if any other customers had this issue, but they said no. For them to run a diagnostic on it, they would have to recreate what had occurred. We all know that is impossible. So I ignored it, as it did not happen again until three months later. Then once again two days ago.

I heard the air hissing out of the right front passenger tire, as it deflated. The front of the car was badly damaged from the crash into the barriers. Luckily no one was injured or killed. This is the second acceleration problem we have experiencd. In May I had a deacceleration issue with this car. I was crossing traffic and when I pressed on the accelerator, it very slowly moved, not letting me accelerate. I was worried about the on coming traffic hitting me, but luckily they just honked and went around. Moments later Iaccelerated and the car worked normally again. We took it to the VW shop and they said they didn't find anything. That they "reset it". It had worked normally until today. The system that malfunctioned was the speed control. My safety and anyone around me was put at risk, by having a car accelerating when I didn't want it to. It's a Sunday, so don't know dealers response yet. Contacted insurance, police and will contact VW on Monday. No warning messages.

Crash: 1
I have experienced within 3 months two incidents of unattended, out of control acceleration when pulling into a parking spot. First I drove into some bushes, at the second incident I drove over a sidewalk almost into a building. It was very scary. I found in the internet another person who has experienced the same thing. https://www.vwidtalk.com/threads/sudden-acceleration.6037/ I have not contacted the dealer yet. I cannot reproduce it. I am very sure I did not step on the accelerator.
May 17, 2023
While driving on the highway the car suddenly slowed down refusing to go faster than 27mph. Regardless of how hard I pushed the accelerator. Very dangerous. Almost caused an accident. Continued for 10miles till trip ended.

My vehicle is at 30k miles and the front 2 tires are showing signs of a huge tire quality issue. They are Bridgestone Alenza tires. Looking online this appears to be a huge common problem. The outside 1/4 of the tire tread has chunks missing that are roughly 1/2"long x 1/2" wide x 1/8" deep spots. This kind of wear pattern appears to be around the whole tire circumference and on both tires.

I bought this car brand new in 2022. My car has approximately 13,000 miles of use. It has been used for normal commute with an average use of 25 miles round trip 2-3 times per week in the last year. It was used less frequently in the 1st year. The front tires are shredding from the inside area and the rear tires are going bald.from both edges. I took the car to.a VW dealership and I was told the tires must be replaced to avoid an eventual blow out from any/all 4 tires.
Aug 11, 2024
I recently did a 20,000 miles service on my vehicle and was told the Bridgestone Alenza tires I have on the vehicle are at a level unsafe to drive - under 3/32. These are the tires that came with the vehicle. The VW person informed me that these tires are unfit for an EV and VW stopped installing them. I reported this to a friend who has the same car but with 16,000 miles, he got the car checked, and got the same answer- unsafe to operate. There are potentially tens of thousands of ID.4 vehicles out there that came out in 2021 and 2022 that have these tires on, driving on tires that are unsafe to operate because nobody expects tires to be that bad after less than 20k miles. These should be recalled. I have reported this to VW customer service. VW is unwilling to take any responsibility for this issue. They told me to go talk to the manufacturer (Bridgestone).

My 2022 VW ID.4 Pro S has experienced a total failure of the GPS and telematics system (J949 module), causing a dangerous 'GPS Drift' where the vehicle reports its location miles away from its actual position. This creates two severe safety hazards: Automated System Malfunction: The Travel Assist and Dynamic Road Sign systems are receiving conflicting data. The camera correctly identifies a speed limit (e.g., 40 mph), but the faulty GPS overrides it with incorrect map data (e.g., 25 mph). This causes the vehicle to unexpectedly and dangerously decelerate while in active traffic. Emergency Service Failure: The eCall (Emergency Call) system is reporting the wrong location. In the event of a serious crash, emergency responders would be directed to a location miles away from the actual accident site. My dealer provided written documentation (attached) stating there is 'NO FIX' currently for 2021-2023 models, as they are hardware-locked to a failing Verizon-based data protocol that VW has not patched. The manufacturer has acknowledged the defect but offers no remedy for this safety-critical system.

On two separate occasions the VW ID4 screens have gone blank (main display and heads up display). While the car continued to steer, we lost all indication of speed, navigation, heating, and air conditioning. The pictures we have (unable to attach via this webpage), proves the display does not come back up during driving. Further, holding down the on-off power switch by the steering column or the on-off switch in the main display greater than 10 secs when the car was parked did not reboot or perform a soft reset of the display system.

On November 8, 2025, my 2022 Volkswagen I.D. 4 burst into flames and exploded while it was parked in my apartment complex parking structure (South Side Flats, 1210 Botham Jean Blvd, Dallas TX 75215). My car was completely engulfed in flames, nearby cars as well as the parking structure experienced heat damage. My life and others were put in danger because even though my car was electric, it was parked in a resident garage near other cars who are gas operated, which could have caused an even more catastrophic damage if the fire would've spread more. Dallas Fire Department was present, and a fire report was conducted (Incident number #20253118961). As of today, the vehicle has only been inspected by the Dallas Fire department, as well as a virtual video meeting with my insurance agent from Allstate. Before the incident the car charged normally, was operating normally and there was no indication or warning signs to indicate that there were any issues that would have caused this.

Jul 29, 2025
In July 2023, the airbag light came on in the dash of the vehicle. Upon inspection by the VW dealer, Sheppard Motors, the dealership indicated that the airbag module failed. They said the repair part was back ordered and were not sure when it will be available. I asked them does this mean the airbag system will not work in an accident? They said yes. I suggested pulling an airbag module from one of the cars in their inventory and using it to repair the car. They said no. They left us drive the car away with the airbag light still on. I researched on the internet finding a airbag module for the car. I informed them of the research and website. They said they called the other VW dealer but the part was not available even though the part was showing as available on the website. I believe driving a vehicle without a functioning airbag system is very dangerous. I don't understand why the manufacture does not have parts available for a new car. I think the safety board needs to investigate this parts availability problem and airbag module failure. How can the vehicle have such a great safety rating if the airbag system does not work?

In the VW ID.4, one can retract the rear-view mirrors, making the car a bit narrower, for example for parking. Multiple times, I have started the car and been unable to extend the rear-view mirrors. Not only can I not use the rear-view mirrors, but also, I am distracted trying to figure out how to make them extend. For example, I turn the switch multiple times and failing that, I LOOK at the switch (instead of the road) to verify that I am moving the correct item. This problem has been temporarily mitigated by pulling over, turning off the car, and re-starting it.

This vehicle was recently purchased on 10/14/22 at Mission Bay Volkswagen. The dealership did not fill the window washer fluid reservoir with any fluid. I discovered this during a rainy day when I tried to clean the windshield due to low visibility. Multiple attempts were made to get the window sprayer to work without success. Once I arrived home, I opened the hood and checked the reservoir. Though it is difficult to see the bottom, it appears the car was delivered without any washer fluid.

I’ve had a recall on this car for over 4 months and the dealership/brand hasn’t been able to fix the car yet. The dashboard and the screen every now and then will go off and reset as if I was turning the car on. It has happened when the car is moving. My car is loosing value due to this recalls because it’s reported and I don’t feel safe driving and thinking that the car might suddenly go off in the middle of the road

For the past couple of months, noticing an issue where the main Display in center and also Dashboard above the steering wheel goes pitch black with nothing being displayed while driving. A few times, I was driving on the highway and all screens were black, I could not see what speed I was going at. #2: CarPlay is constantly rebooting every 2 seconds, disconnecting and connecting but e not continuously connected #3 CarPlay automatically connects when I am not in the car but in the living room. None of this observations happened in the first 2 years of my ownership but happening now, I have taken an appt with VW dealer but issue is intermittent, it just goes away without me doing anything.

While driving on the rt 84 near Hartford CT on July 13th the screen for the car went black and was not usable for some time until it restarted/reset, during this period there was no access to ADAS settings and the parking camera and sensors would not have been usable. This disruptive crash also makes for a dangerous situation where navigation guidance is suddenly no longer available.

The sensors for side assist and rear traffic alert are not functioning. The error message came on while driving, then the sensor stopped working immediately. This first occurred about 10 days after taking possession of the vehicle (late July). I scheduled service with the dealer to "fix" the problem, which they claimed was due to excess dirt around the sensors. Within a week of that service (late Aug/early Sept) the error message reappeared and the sensors stopped working again while driving. The sensors do not detect or warn about vehicles or objects in the blind spots. This is a brand new vehicle. One of the techs said they've heard of other customers complaining about different sensors. After searching online for similar issues, I found multiple, such as here: https://www.vwidtalk.com/threads/front-assist-stopped-working.7725/#post-135632 Like this post, I have not been able to get service again yet locally (they are "backed up") and VW of America has been somewhat dismissive of the concerns about these safety features not functioning on a new vehicle.

While driving approximately 35 mph, there was a "thunk". I thought I was hit from behind, but there were no cars or debris around. The dash lit up with multiple warning lights and the car lost all drive power. If this had happened on freeway it could have had a major accident. Car was towed to dealer who said there was an internal battery failure they couldn't work on. Volkswagen then made me pay for a second tow to another dealer. I am currently without the car or further reports.

While driving my 2022 Volkswagen ID4 about 1 and 1/2 hours into our trip, I had multiple system errors come up on the "heads up" display. "Electrical system not working correctly." The car suddenly lost systems including speedometer, parking brake, steering, etc. I was able to pull off the highway with some difficulty since the steering and braking were effected. I was unable to turn off the car and the doors locked so that the key fob was not functioning. we used the key to pop open the cover on the door and unlock the door manually. we had the car towed to a dealership for diagnostic. However, the dealership was closed as it was Saturday night and it's also closed on Sunday. I'll find out tomorrow more information about what they can do. This same exact problem happened last year. I had the car towed to a dealership and then the dealership did a software update and it seemed to be fixed. I believe that this is a serious safety issue and needs to be remedied.

We've taken the ID.4 in to the dealership three times for repairs. They have not been able to resolve it and have more or less said that it is a manufacturer defect. * The car does not connect to the internet. * The driver's console continues to go blank, very often loses all safety features, and generally acts oddly. We've realized that this mostly happens when the car travels over slight bumps or vibrations, which is basically every time we drive it. Warning signs on the driver's console will show loss of main safety features like Rear Traffic Alerts, Lane Assist, and Cruise Control. * The main driver console often goes blank. It recently blanked out for twenty to thirty minutes while driving on the freeway, making it impossible to know how fast I was going. This also happened in a school zone where children were present. * The back over camera often goes blank. There are children in our neighborhood and this makes backing out of our driveway unsafe. I've supplied Volkswagen with multiple videos of these occurrences, including to [email protected] and [email protected], and they have not resolved the issue.

It basically activated something that accelerated suddenly the car and it is like someone took control over the car causing me to crash with 2 cars in front of me. Yes, it is available for inspection. 2. I don't feel safe anymore with that car and also I am terrified that innocent people's lives will be put at risk. 3. I have seen some articles around the internet with the same experience that I had and it looks like Volkswagen has a law suit about it. 4. No, but I have reported to 911 and my insurance. 5. No, there's no any warning on the car dashboard before this incident happened.

[XXX] [XXX] September 14, 2025 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Office of Defects Investigation 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE Washington, DC 20590 Subject: Formal Complaint – Safety Defect in 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 (Power Steering and Brake Failure) Dear Sir or Madam, I am submitting this formal complaint regarding a serious safety defect in my 2022 Volkswagen ID.4, which resulted in a crash and a minor injury to my wife. This defect poses a substantial risk of death or serious injury to the driving public. On [XXX], my wife experienced sudden unintended acceleration, followed immediately by complete loss of braking and steering control. She was unable to avoid leaving the roadway and entered a ditch, sustaining a minor injury. The vehicle suffered fender damage. The vehicle was towed to our authorized Volkswagen dealership. The dealership’s technician documented that the power steering module failed. However, Volkswagen of America subsequently dispatched an engineer, who instructed the dealer not to communicate further with us. Volkswagen headquarters later claimed the power steering module failed only because the vehicle entered the ditch—an explanation directly at odds with the technician’s report and a witness account. Volkswagen has refused to accept responsibility, declined to cover medical or repair costs, and denied replacement of the failed power steering module. Our insurance provider also declined coverage, determining that the accident was caused by a mechanical failure. Legal and Regulatory References 1.49 U.S.C. § 30118 – Motor Vehicle Safety Act Requires manufacturers to notify NHTSA and vehicle owners when they determine a motor vehicle contains a defect related to motor vehicle safety. The failure of the power steering and braking systems clearly qualifies as a “safety-related defect” because it directly compromises steering and stopping ability. 2.49 C.F.R. I purchased this vehicle on [XXX] from Sunnyvale Volkswagen and have experienced ongoing issues with the electrical system, infotainment, safety features, and OTA software updates. In early 2023, all error lights came on while driving, followed by a complete electrical system failure. The car would not restart until the next day. In 2024 and again in 2025, the center screen went completely black, disabling the rearview camera, hands-free navigation, climate control, and car settings. Restart attempts failed. On Feb 26, 2025, I accepted an OTA software update, which failed. I tried again on Feb 27. When I returned to the car later that day, the update was still running. The next day, the car would not unlock with either key. I tried the manual key over an hour and hundred times, which eventually worked, but the keys still weren’t recognized. I replaced both key batteries with new ones from the store (one key was spare hence never used), but the issue persisted. After several days of the same issue and hours of failed attempts, I was finally able to start the car and drive it to Sunnyvale VW on March 3rd. They acknowledged the issue and replaced both key batteries again with OEM ones, which temporarily resolved the problem. On March 25, I was contacted by Stevens Creek Volkswagen to address two open recalls. I scheduled an appointment for March 31 at 9am and called on March 30 to confirm. Despite the confirmation and their having a note for a loaner from the manager, I was told upon arrival—after waiting 15 minutes—that parts were unavailable and they couldn’t perform the repairs. I was told I’d be contacted when parts arrive, the same excuse I’ve heard since the recall opened a year ago. My safety recall remains unresolved. This vehicle has proven unreliable and unsafe for my family. I am requesting a full replacement of this lemon with a brand-new vehicle as soon as possible. I use this car for work daily, see patients in their homes. The driver door won’t locked, for 2 consecutive days and this is not the first time incident. Whenever this happens, I notify the dealer but they said VW does not have repair/solution to it yet. So, the car’s safety features (emergency braking, lane departure assist, adaptive cruise control and etc) are not functional. This makes it dangerous for us/drivers. Because the door is unlocked and car is running, it sends signals/sounds warning the door is unlocked. It is terrifying driving the car while it’s raining. I am unsure if the car will suddenly stop. Also, the anti-fog doesn’t work unless I turn on the heater which reduces my mileage. I can barely see the road when it’s pouring rain. The car doesn’t charge to its usual 200 miles at 80% (recommended), only charging 180 miles at 90%. Hope you can help me please as I am the bread winner in the family. We do not have extra budget to get another car. Our old 2010 Prius is only good in town, not in major highways. If something happens to me due to this car’s manufacturing faults, my husband and child will be left destitute and end up homeless. Thank you for your assistance.

**Summary of Complaint:** A clicking sound occurs randomly during acceleration, deceleration, and when driving over bumpy roads. Despite bringing the vehicle to an authorized Volkswagen (VW) dealer three times, they were unable to diagnose or resolve the issue. The vehicle is only 2.5 years old and still under warranty. **Detailed Description:** 1. **Symptoms:** A random clicking sound is heard under the following conditions: - When accelerating - When decelerating - While driving on uneven or bumpy roads 2. **Attempts to Resolve:** The vehicle was brought to a VW dealership on three separate occasions. Despite their inspections, they were unable to identify the source of the problem. 3. **Vehicle Details:** The car is relatively new, only 2.5 years old, and remains within the manufacturer's warranty period. 4. **Concerns:** The unresolved issue may pose a safety risk, particularly if the sound is related to critical drivetrain or suspension components. Additionally, repeated unsuccessful repair attempts by the dealer are frustrating. **Resolution Sought:** I would like the NHTSA to review this issue and investigate whether this is a broader concern with similar VW models. I hope VW can be held accountable for properly diagnosing and fixing the problem under warranty.

I am writing to report two concerning safety issues with my vehicle: Repeated Door Clicking During Car Wash: On multiple occasions while driving through an automatic car wash, I have noticed that the car doors repeatedly click, as if attempting to unlock or open. This erratic behavior occurs despite no input from the driver or passengers, raising concerns about the vehicle’s electrical system and its reliability under normal operating conditions. Speedometer Malfunction: More critically, the instrument panel, including the speedometer, has gone completely black while driving. The panel remains non-functional for 5-10 minutes before rebooting on its own, leaving me unable to see my speed or other critical driving information during this period. This issue poses a significant risk to my safety as well as the safety of others on the road. Both issues are unpredictable and have occurred multiple times, making the vehicle unsafe under certain conditions. I kindly request your assistance in investigating these problems to ensure that no further safety hazards arise.

The Marin Volkswagen dealer informs me that the JX4 electric drive motor, control electronics 2 and high voltage control module on my 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 all failed and need to be replaced. I am informed that a Volkswagen field representative went out to the Marin dealership and confirmed the necessity of these repairs. On [XXX], 2024, I was driving in the fast lane of [XXX] at a speed of somewhere between 65 /70 miles per hour when I heard a loud "pop" sound and a warning appeared on my dashboard indicating a system failure and warning me to immediately pull over. I had lost all motor power and had to use whatever remaining momentum I had to immediately get over to the right hand shoulder in rush hour traffic. Mine and the safety of all other drivers in the area were compromised because I could have been rear-ended at high speed if I had instead hit my brakes and lost momentum in getting over to the shoulder. I was lucky to have reacted in the manner that I did in maintaining my remaining momentum. There was a very minimal shoulder available for me to pull off on. A Marin County sheriff was able to pull up behind me with flashing lights to warn drivers in the right lane to steer clear and avoid my vehicle. I had the vehicle towed to the nearest VW dealership. I had charged the car at an Electrify America station in San Francisco about an hour prior to the incident and the car had sufficient battery power (approx. 80%). I had no prior indicators that there was any problem with the vehicle. At the time of the incident, I had previously received all software updates and had the 30K maintenance service on [XXX], 2023 at Dirito Bros. Volkswagen in Walnut Creek, CA. The vehicle’s forward collision warning, the land departure warning, the rear cross traffic warning, the blind spot monitoring have all been having issues since the first week of the car. I’ve taken the car into the shop over 10 times since the summer of 2022 on initial purchase. Each time the vehicle comes in and Volkswagen says they cannot fix it and a future update is coming and will fix it. The update finally has come and the vehicle has all of the same problems and more. These cars are really dangerous to drive, please recall them off the road. You have a bunch of people driving malfunctioning vehicles.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
1 complaint
While driving to work at 6:45AM, on a secondary road with the vehicle in "B" mode and the main cruise control switch active, but not on, I approached an intersection and was attempting to use the vehicle's regenerative braking. My right foot was off the gas and gently resting on the brake peddle. This is when I felt the car suddenly accelerate. I immediately pressed the break peddle which slowed the car appropriately, but not to a complete stop. I released the break at which point the car re-accelerated. I immediately reapplied the break and came to a complete stop. There was a car in front of me and if I had not reacted so quickly it's possible I would have run into that vehicle. After these two episodes I immediately pulled off the road into a parking lot and got out of the car to do a visual inspection. After seeing nothing wrong I proceeded to drive to work without incident making sure the cruise control main switch was deactivated. The car is waiting inspection by the local dealership and available for inspection. The problem has never reoccured. No warning lamps nor messages present prior to or during the incident.

The car has now 3 times over the last year suddenly lurched forward while braking and pulling into a parking spot. The first time it went over a curb and into a yard. We thought it could be a mistake, but my wife, driving, has never had an accident in 40 years driving. Happened again, and we thought maybe it had something to do with cruise control and hepatic sensitive buttons. But we keep that system off unless we are on the highway. This time it lurched forward but she managed to get it to stop just as it touched the parked car in front. No damage. Foot was on the brake as coming to a stop. This car should not be allowed on the road.

SEAT BELTS
1 complaint
Vehicle stopped in traffic in exit lane of freeway with a line of other vehicles. Driver at-fault was traveling at freeway speeds of 65+ mph and veered into the line of vehicles waiting to exit. Our ID4 had 4 passengers, adult driver, adult passenger, and two children in rear seat, all wearing seatbelts. The seatbelt of the rear passenger's side failed resulting in child hitting their head on headrest in front of them as well as the side window and post. Moderate injuries occurred and child is recovering. None of the others in the vehicle were injured. Likely failure is pretensioner of seatbelt. Currently in the accident investigation with insurance and the component has not been inspected at this time but certainly will be.

After charging our EV vehicle, an error regarding an electrical system fault displayed on the dash. However, it was very brief and was no longer displayed after a few seconds, leaving only a triangle with an exclamation point illuminated on the dash. Unaware that propulsion power was limited, we proceeded to drive the vehicle, however while making a left turn across oncoming traffic, we realized that the ID4 was limited to around 10-20 percent of normal propulsion, even with the gas pedal to the floor. This nearly caused an accident due to nearly not being able to clear traffic.

I have two issue One issue is -door sometimes hard to open , I have to roll the window down to open it from outside / it's electronic touch sensitive and I have to wear rubber gloves to open the door with force - it happens randomly on both passenger and driver side . 4 to 5 times the problem occurs second issue is the car loosing power while driving and there is multiple errors on the screen and the car is slow to accelerate, and to drive it happened twice the on the first time I brought it to the dealership right away and they kept my car for 2 days and, they said it's clear to drive - it was approximately 6 K miles on the first incident. it happened again on about 8 K miles and I pull over to the shoulder then park and turn off my car , I waited few minutes, before turning on the car , then has power again after I took it to volkswagen on 9.5 K miles 2 weeks ago for routine maintenance 10K service and I mentioned that the loosing power happened again and they said they will keep my car overnight to find out then they said there is update or recall but I don't know if the update or recall is for that incident or something else , they said they did an update or recall on my car for full 1 day on top of the 10K miles routine. all incidents is mentioned to dealership when I take it for them the door handle and loosing power buy when I'm looking at the paperwork , it doesn't say that I brought the car there for that reason.. I wonder if they know the problem and don't know how to fix or they have different paperwork's or they are just ignoring... the tire that came with this car also is nail magnet, I waiting for Costco to schedule my tire replacement. with only 10K miles several flat tires already

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
1 complaint
I was driving in stop-and-go traffic on 5/3/23 and when I released my foot from the brake to gentle accelerate when traffic ahead of me moved, many error messages flashed on the dashboard and the vehicle did not move. The various errors included "travel assist not available", "forward collision warning not available", "vehicle should NOT be towed", "all wheel drive function is currently limited" and "electrical system warning, please service vehicle". When I pressed the accelerator, the car moved extremely slowly - less than 1mph. I put on my emergency flashers and attempted to move into the right lane and pull over to a safe location (extremely slowly with traffic honking and going around me). I tried turning the car off and turning it back on. Many error messages again, but the car did go a few more feet for me to turn onto a side street and park. At that point the car also started shaking/shuddering. I got out of the vehicle in a safe location and called a tow truck, and the vehicle was taken to the VW dealership. The next day, the service manager told me that they ran the fault codes and started a VW tech ticket and the problem was failure of the rear drive motor (the main motor of the car), which is currently being replaced. I also had a similar incident ~6 months ago where the car suddenly lost power while backing up in a parking garage. After about 10-15 minutes the electronic errors seemed to reset and the car drove normally, but I did take it to the dealership and At that time the control module was replaced. Suddenly losing power while driving is a safety issue because it could easily cause a rear end accident, and it is very difficult to even navigate to a safe location to pull over.

My instrument cluster and infotainment system went black while driving. This means that I had no access to my speedometer, which I believe is a safety issue. Additionally, I had no access to my range estimate or any other vehicle information. No backup camera, no lane assist, etc.

While driving on the highway at night in good conditions there were suddenly a large number error warning messages stating that the ADAS functions were no longer working. On checking the codes after the drive it appears that there was a temporary camera module failure. After leaving the car sitting overnight it began working correctly again.

2/14/23, Longmont Colorado snow storm roads snowcovered. Vehicle in Traction mode, all wheel drive. Exiting an inclined parking lot cars rear end started sliding to left, gently accelerated to correct. Yellow caution lights illuminated for all systems. No advanced driver assistance systems were working. Car was extremely difficult to drive, braking was severely restricted as was acceleration and cornering . I believe the computer system was overloaded, “confused” and shut down. I honestly don’t believe that I could have controlled the vehicle had I been driving any Colorado mountain pass. Managed to drive approximately 3 miles to home, but it was a scary experience. Facebook groups for ID-4, reported that when the computer crashes, to stop car, exit, lock and step away at least 50 feet for 5 minutes to reset. Not practical in a mountain blizzard! It was quite a surprise, as we have taken to snow covered Fair Grounds parking lot to determine how the car accelerates, brakes and turns in snow. Did donuts and figure eights and the computer never freaked out. I was not able to photograph cockpit screen because of conditions. Once key 50 feet away for 5 minutes it reset, again not very practical during a snowstorm had I been on Vail pass.

UNKNOWN - My ID4 stalled with ALL errors appearing today (2nd time in 2 days). I was rolling to a stop at a light, around 10mph. The car errored out suddenly and I was stuck. The car could not move for 1-2 minutes. I had to attempt to turn on/off multiple times, put it into park then drive and park and drive until it would start moving again. I was lucky this happen at a stop light otherwise I would have been rear ended on the freeway, which cause extreme harm. The dealer checked the 12v and said it was fine. They do not have an appointment for another two months.

Got in car, put foot on the brake and put it in gear. The car jumped forward and I had to press brakes with all my strength to keep it from accelerating to full “throttle”. It did the exact same when I put it in reverse. I turned the car off, got out, gave it a couple of minutes and tried two more times. It did the same thing every time. It is like the accelerator is pressed to the floor as soon as you put it in gear without you touching it. I almost hit my house due to the wheels being turned before the first try. I called a tow truck to take it to the dealer. I have only had the car for two weeks. The consumer stated that they discovered what the issue was and that they would like to cancel their complaint.

Ever since I picked this car up I've noticed that it's been having constant electrical gremlins. Some days things will work some days things will not work. But the issue that I'm writing about is that earlier this week on a Monday I went to go to a local charger. When I was done charging about 10 minutes later I was pulling out of a parking lot and coasting to a stop to get on the main road. However even though I was pressing the brake pedal the car suddenly lurched forward and started accelerating. I arrested the acceleration with the brake pedal but found that it was firm and had to press even harder to get the car to come to a stop.

Twice, upon starting the vehicle, the front panel said "Warning and information not available. Drive with greater care!". No speedometer, no headlights, no indication of charge left (mileage available for travel). Electric key fob did not open or lock door. I had to pull out the manual in the dark to read how to turn off engine, as it did not turn off in the normal fashion. The first time it happened, I hadn't realized the engine was still running, so I exited the car, and it locked me out with the engine running. Luckily the window was open enough for me to put my hand in and open the driver door. This is the third time into the dealer, the first time was a bad charging cable (though I don't know if that made the car short out, or if the car blew the cable). I've had the car a little over a month.
