The check engine light and oil pressure light appeared on my dash screen as I was driving home from work. I pulled over to the nearest repair shop to have the vehicle diagnosed. Upon arriving, the mechanic noticed my oil was low and filled the car with oil. Once that was completed, the car would not start. I noticed it made unusual noises after several more failed attempts. I had the vehicle towed to an authorized dealership to further troubleshoot and they were able to confirm that the engine jumped time due to a failed timing chain tensioner, which requires a new engine since mine is an interference engine. Due to the timing chain tensioner failing, there was catastrophic damage done to the engine leaving the vehicle inoperable.

TL* THE CONSUMER OWNS A 2009 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT. THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THE ENGINE INTAKE MANIFOLD FAILED AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE NOT TO ACCELERATE IN A TIMELY MANNER. THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE FAILED THE STATE INSPECTION DUE TO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. On [XXX], a MIDAS shop found an alleged crack in the front part of the gas tank on the upper part of the tank by the floor board. The manager also stated that it could be a plastic seal from the fuel pump on the top part of the tank. The tank is located next to the exhaust system. My 2009 VW CC 4-Motion only has 122,xxx miles on it. I could see a wet spot and presumed I smelled gas but was not sure. He gave me a printout of what the cost would be to repair the system. I told him I would be filing a report with NHTSA. I then called Lunde's VW, W. Bell Rd., Peoria, AZ. I talked to a Tyler Rodriquez and he said there were no recalls and VW could not warrant the problem. I told him I would be filing a report with NHTSA and he did not respond to me. Both places were quite fast to elicit repairs from their business. Only MIDAS pointed out the exhaust pipes being near the gas tank. Approximately six years ago I had been to another VW dealership in Phoenix about my gas gauge needle not working properly and I was sold a gas cap to fix the problem. The problem has been a recurring one and my gas mileage fluctuates. This situation reminds me of the mid-1970s problem with the Ford Pinto gas tanks, which I believe was never resolved. FUEL PUMP HAS GONE OUT. VOLKSWAGEN INDICATES MY PARTICULAR CAR DOESN'T QUALIFY UNDER THE RECALL FOR THE RECALL REPORT 17V-509. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS ISSUE WITH THE 2009 PASSAT.

FUEL PUMP CRACKED, AND PLACEMENT OF PUMP CAUSED GASOLINE TO POOL UNDERNEATH BACK SEAT INSIDE THE CAR, RIGHT UNDER WHERE MY 4 YEAR OLDS CAR SEAT IS. TECH STARTED WE ARE EXTREMELY LUCKY THAT IT DIDNT CATCH ON FIRE, BECAUSE IT WAS BASICALLY A BOMB DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH HIM THAT COULD HAVE GONE OFF ANYTIME THE CAR WAS TURNED ON OR RUNNING. ONLY FOUND OUT ABOUT IT WHEN I TOOK IT TO GET THE FUEL PUMP MODULE REPLACED, AND ONLY FOUND OUT ABOUT THAT RECALL WHEN THE CAR STARTED STALLING OUT WHILE DRIVING. IT IS NOW AT VOLKSWAGEN OF MACON WAITING ON PARTS FOR A $1,000 REPAIR. WE ARE GOING TO GET RID OF THE CAR BECAUSE WE ARE NOT PUTTING MY SON BACK IN A CAR WHERE THAT IS EVEN POSSIBLE.

I AM WRITING TO YOUR ORGANIZATION BECAUSE OF THE INJUSTICE I EXPERIENCED WITH A RECALL AT VOLKSWAGEN. A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO I HAD SOME ISSUES WITH MY PASSAT AND TOOK IT TO THE DEALER. DEALERS DOING WHAT DEALER'S GAUGED ME FOR WHATEVER THEY COULD. THIS YEAR, HOWEVER, VOLKSWAGEN CAME OUT WITH RECALL FOR THE PART WHICH I REPLACED TWO YEARS AGO. THEY PAID ME PARTIALLY FOR MY OUR OF POCKET EXPENSES BUT MY ARGUMENT TO THEM WAS THAT I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN AT THE DEALER TO BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF IF NOT FOR THE RECALL. I INITIALLY REQUESTED THAT THEY REFUND FULL LABOR AND ONE OF THE PARTS. BUT COME TO THINK OF IT BOTH PARTS ARE RELATED TO THE FUEL SYSTEM AND NOW I WOULD LIKE A COMPLETE REFUND.

STEERING

The power steering system fails when the engine/engine compartment gets hot. The problem has appeared after the car has been shut down (such as when refueling or a quick run into a store) and then restarted. When the key is pushed in to start the car, there is a loud grinding noise, a visible shimmy of the steering wheel, followed by the red steering wheel icon indicating there is a problem and 3 chimes. The steering wheel is locked in position with very limited turning ability and ability to control the direction of the car.

MY STEERING WILL LOCK UP AND FAIL, BUT THEN AFTER I RESTART THE CAR A COUPLE TIMES IT WORKS AGAIN. THEN IT FAILS WITHOUT WARNING. I GET THE AUDITORY ALERT AS WELL AS A SOLID RED STEERING WHEEL ON THE DASH. THERE IS A RECALL ON 130 OF THIS EXACT CAR, BUT WHEN I DO A VIN SEARCH IT IS NOT INCLUDED. THE CURRENT RECALL NUMBER IS 08V577000, AND I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT GETTING MY VIN INCLUDED SINCE ITS THE SAME FAILURE. IT HAS ALREADY BEEN TO THE SHOP 3 TIMES TO BE CORRECTED, BUT ONLY IN THE STEERING WHEEL, NOT IN THE STEERING BOX AS INDICATED ON THE RECALL. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING IT WHEN IT FAILED, BUT WAS IN HER PATIENTS NEIGHBORHOOD WHEN IT LOST POWER STEERING (LIKELY WITHIN THE 5 MPH SPEED FOR IT TO FAIL).

WHEN PARKED OR WHILE DRIVING THE STEERING COLUMN LOCKS UP CAUSING THE CAR TO LOSE THE ABILITY TO STEER OR WILL AUTOMATICALLY SHUT THE CAR OFF WHILE IN TRAFFIC!! THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL ON LINE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS SAME ISSUE AND VOLKSWAGEN REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS FAULTY PART WHICH NOT ONLY ENDANGERS THE DRIVER AND PASSENGERS BUT EVERYONE OUT ON THE ROAD IN THE CAR'S PATH. I HAVE UPLOADED THE OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS VERY DANGEROUS ISSUE.

SINCE I BOUGHT MY CAR WITH 75000 MI ON IT 3 YEARS AGO, WHEN I PUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION AND START IT THE CAR SHUTS DOWN AND TELLS ME STEERING CONTROL LOCK MALFUNCTION. SOMEONE HAD TOLD ME TO CHANGE THE BATTERY, I DID SO AND THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS. IT IS DUE TO A FAULTY IMMOBILIZER KEY. SOMETIMES THE CAR WON'T EVEN START, AND SOMETIMES IT DIRECTS ME TO TAKE IT TO THE WORKSHOP. I HAVE SPOKEN TO VOLKSWAGEN A NUMBER OF TIMES ABOUT THIS ISSUE, BECAUSE IT WAS A RECALL FOR THE 2008 MODEL OF MY CAR, BUT THEY INSIST THAT 2009 DIDN'T HAVE THE PROBLEM. I KNOW FROM SPEAKING WITH OTHERS THAT HAVE THE SAME YEAR MAKE AND MODEL THAT I AM NOT EXPERIENCING AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. JUST AS A NUMBER OF OTHER PROBLEMS VW NEEDS TO OWN UP TO IT'S MISTAKES AND OFFER A RESOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM. EVEN IF IT IS CHANGING THE IGNITION SYSTEM TO A REGULAR TURN STYLE KEY.

MY CAR HAS LESS THAN 35000 MILES. THE STEERING WHEEL COLUMN LOCK IS DEFECTIVE HAS BEEN APPEARING ON MY INSTRUMENT PANEL. THIS DEFECTIVE PART WILL NOT ALLOW THE CAR TO START AT TIME. FURTHER INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT IT COULD CAUSE THE CAR TO STALL WHILE IT IS BEING DRIVEN. A SEARCH OF THE INTERNET REVEALED THAT THIS IS A FREQUENT PROBLEM WITH THIS MAKE AND MODEL OF THE CAR. IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE WHICH IS NOT CAUSED BY NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. VOLKSWAGEN REFUSES TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE AT NO CHARGE FOR A KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE. I WANT VOLKSWAGEN HELD RESPONSIBLE. IF THE VEHICLE STALLS WHILE IN MOTION, I WILL FILE A LAWSUIT. I WANT TO GIVE YOUR COMPANY THE OPPORTUNITY TO RESOLVE IT FIRST.

THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO VOLKSWAGEN OF ORANGE PARK (7220 BLANDING BLVD, JACKSONVILLE, FL 32244 (855) 758-7110) WHERE SHE WAS INFORMED THAT SHE WOULD HAVE TO PAY $100 TO HAVE THE INDICATOR TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS INFORMED AND ADVISED THE CONTACT TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.

TAKATA RECALL- I WAS NOTIFIED BY TK HOLDINGS INC. THAT MY 2009 VW PASSAT SHOULD HAVE AIRBAGS REPLACED AS PART OF THE NATIONAL RECALL. I CONTACTED VW AND THEY REFUSED TO REPLACE MY AIRBAGS STATING THAT MY CAR WAS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR AN AIRBAG RECALL, BUT ONLY ELIGIBLE FOR A FUEL PUMP RECALL.

MY VW PASSAT 2009 SUSTAINED ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO FAILURE TIMING CHAIN/TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER AND NOW NEEDS VERY EXPENSIVE ENGINE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF ENGINE. CAR DROVE OKAY FOR 15 MINUTES IN THE MORNING THEN IT WAS THEN PARKED FOR ABOUT 2 HOURS. WHEN TRYING TO RE-START THE CAR, THE CAR WOULD NOT START. MECHANIC NOTED ABSENT COMPRESSION IN 2 CYLINDERS AND DIAGNOSED IT TO BE DUE TO TIMING CHAIN SLIPPING. THIS HAPPENED AT 80,000MILES AND LESS THAN 10 YEARS (9 YEARS 9 MONTHS) OF PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE. VW'S EXTENDED WARRANTY COVERS REPAIR/REPLACEMENT OF TIMING CHAIN BUT DOES NOT COVER REPAIR OF ENGINE DAMAGE RESULTED DUE TO TIMING CHAIN FAILURE. THE CAR WAS SERVICED AT VW DEALER REGULARLY AND THERE WAS NO WARNING OR INDICATION OF IMPENDING FAILURE OF THE TIMING CHAIN. OTHER OWNERS OF VW VEHICLES HAVE ALSO COMPLAINED OF HAVING IDENTICAL PROBLEMS ON ONLINE COMMUNITY WITH SOME PEOPLE COMPLAINING OF ENGINE STALLING WHILE DRIVING. THIS APPEARS TO BE A DEFECTIVE DESIGN RATHER THAN WEAR AND TEAR DUE AGEING AND I FEEL THAT VW SHOULD RECALL THE AFFECTED VEHICLES TO REPAIR THE PROBLEMS.

THERE IS A LATENT DEFECT IN THE TENSIONER SYSTEM OF THE TIMING CHAIN THAT CAN CAUSE THE CHAIN TO 'JUMP A TOOTH' IN THE VEHICLE'S CAMSHAFT, WHICH CAUSES SERIOUS AND SOMETIMES FATAL DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE. UNFORTUNATELY THE DEFECT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR CAR OWNERS TO DISCOVER, BUT AUDI AND VOLKSWAGEN KNEW OF THE TENSIONER SYSTEM PROBLEM SINCE AT LEAST JUNE 2010. NORMALLY, THE TIMING CHAIN IS MEANT TO FUNCTION PERFECTLY FOR AT LEAST 120,000 MILES. BECAUSE THE SYSTEM IS NOT ON THE SCHEDULE FOR RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE FROM THE MANUFACTURERS. HOWEVER, WITH THE DEFECTIVE TENSIONER, THE TIMING CHAIN FREQUENTLY FAILS WELL BEFORE THAT MARK, BUT OFTEN AFTER THE WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED. THIS ISSUE CAUSED MY ENGINE TO HAVE CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE.

AT 43,321 MILES, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON. VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO A VOLKSWAGEN DEALERSHIP WHERE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD HAD TO BE REPLACED ALONG WITH THE FUEL INDUCTION. THE MANIFOLD WAS COVERED BY WARRANTY BUT, NOT THE FUEL INDUCTION. OUT OF POCKET COST $136.90 AT 54,337 MILES, WHEN ACCELERATED THERE WAS A HESITATION IN THE ENGINE AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAD COME ON. VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE IGNITION COIL FOR CYLINDER 1 HAD TO BE REPLACED (CYLINDER MISFIRE FAULT AND COOLING FAN FAULTS) AND ALSO THE COOLING FAN WHICH WAS FAULTY. CAR STOPPED ON A HIGHWAY WHILE IN MOTION. WENT TO THE VW DEALER. THEY FOUND "FAULTS FOR FUEL MODULE, AND FUEL PUMP UNIT." THEY REMOVED AND INSTALLED FUEL PUMP AND TUBE BUT DIDN'T TELL ME IT WAS A RECALLED ITEM/PART. I PAID THE FULL AMOUNT OUT OF MY POCKET: $988.57

ON SUNDAY MORNING ABOUT 11:20 AM AS I TURNED MY CAR ON IT IMMEDIATELY STARTED TO RATTLE FOLLOWED BY BLACK SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER MY HOOD. I IMMEDIATELY TURNED MY CAR OFF, UNLOCKED MY HOOD AND UNBUCKLED MY 3 BOYS OUT OF THEIR CAR SEATS AND RAN OUT OF THE CAR. AS I MADE SURE THEY WERE AT A SAFE DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE CAR I WALKED BACK TO MY CAR POPPED THE HOOD UP AND NOTICED FIRE COMING FROM WHAT APPEARED TO BE THE ENGINE. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED 911 AND RAN TO MY NEIGHBORS APARTMENT TO ASK FOR WATER SO MY CAR WOULDN'T BURN TO THE GROUND. BY THE TIME THE FIRE DEPARTMENT MADE IT OUT MY NEIGHBOR AND I WERE ABLE TO PUT THE FIRE OUT THANK GOD. THE FOLLOWING DAY I HAD IT TO TOWED BY HANNA'S TOWING THROUGH MY CAR INSURANCE AGENCY TO THE NEAREST VOLKSWAGEN SERVICE CENTER. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER WALTER HAD TO UNPLUG THE BATTERY BECAUSE WHEN HE TURNED IT ON TO PUT THE VEHICLE ON NEUTRAL TO HOOK IT UP TO THE TOW TRUCK IT STARTED TO SMOKE UP AGAIN. *JS

FAILURE OF KEY (FOB OR WHAT EVER VW CALLS IT) TO START VEHICLE WHEN INSERTED IN IGNITION SWITCH. THIS FAILURE HAS OCCURRED TWICE AND RESULTED IN IGNITION SWITCH NEEDING TO BE REPLACED BY DEALER. ON THE SECOND OCCURRENCE THE KEY ITSELF SHORTED OUT AND WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO OPEN POWER DOORS; HOWEVER, THE KEY WOULD ALLOW ME TO OPEN THE POWER REAR HATCH SO THAT I COULD CRAWL THROUGH CAR TO UNLOCK DOORS. TODAY THE OTHER KEY STARTED ACTING UP FOR MY WIFE AND WOULD NOT ALLOW HER TO UNLOCK DOORS AND SHE HAD TO CRAWL THROUGH CAR TO UNLOCK DOORS. THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE DEALER HAS THE FIRST FAULTY KEY FOR WHICH HE WAS TO GET US A REPLACEMENT AND WE ARE WAITING ON VW TO REPLACE FAULTY KEY. I DO NOT KNOW IF DEALERSHIP STILL HAS FAULTY IGNITION SWITCHES BUT THE SERVICE MANAGER STILL HAS MY KEY. THE DATES OF THE IGNITION SWITCH REPLACEMENTS ARE 01/20/2009 & 09/09/2009. I BOUGHT THIS CAR USED AND FROM THE MOMENT I TOOK IT OF THE LOT 13 MONTHS AGO I HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS. THE CARE WILL STOP, SHAKE. I HAVE ALREADY HAD IT CHECK 3 TIMES AND REPAIRED TWICE. FUEL PUMP HAS BEEN CHANGED TWICE AND I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AGAIN. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY HAZARD IF I AM ON THE EXPRESSWAY AND NO WARNING TAKE PLACE WHICH COULD LEAD TO A MAJOR ACCIDENT. 2009 VW PASSAT 2.0T. OIL LEAKING FROM REAR MAIN SEAL. REAR MAIN SEAL FAILED AT ABOUT 75,000 MILES, NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. FIRST INDICATION WAS OIL SPOT ON DRIVEWAY AND THEN CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. INSPECTED BOTTOM OF ENGINE AND IT WAS COATED WITH OIL. THE PCV VALVE FAILED AND CAUSED REAR MAIN SEAL TO RUPTURE AND SHOOT OIL (AND POSSIBLY GAS VAPORS) ALL OVER BOTTOM OF HOT ENGINE. MY VEHICLE'S CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED ON FOR SEVERAL DAYS, AND THE ENGINE STARTED RUNNING ABNORMALLY, SO I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC DISCOVERED THAT THE INTAKE MANIFOLD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, IN ADDITION TO OTHER WORK ON THE ENGINE AND FUEL SYSTEM. I FOUND OUT THAT VOLKSWAGEN HAD ISSUED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THE INTAKE MANIFOLD AND FUEL INJECTORS OF MY VEHICLE'S ENGINE. HOWEVER, ALTHOUGH MY ENGINE WAS OF THE EXACT SAME TYPE INCLUDED IN THE EXTENDED WARRANTY, VOLKSWAGEN CLAIMED I WAS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR WARRANTY REPLACEMENT SINCE MY VEHICLE'S VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED ON THE EXTENDED WARRANTY LIST. CONSIDERING THAT MY VEHICLE HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED AND IS ONLY ABOUT 5 YEARS OLD, I BELIEVE THAT THE INTAKE MANIFOLD PROBLEM IS RELATED TO THE PROBLEM THAT RESULTED IN THE WARRANTY EXTENSION, AND MY VEHICLE SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE WARRANTY EXTENSION. THIS WAS A VERY DANGEROUS EXPERIENCE. AFTER STOPPED AT ONE TRAFFIC LIGHT, THE ENGINE WAS TOTAL SHUT DOWN WHEN I PRESS THE ACCELERATION PEDAL. CAR STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD RIGHT AFTER THE CAR MADE THE LEFT TURN. THEN I RESTARTED THE ENGINE, IT SEEMED NORMAL, BUT AFTER ONLY 300 YARDS WHEN I HIT THE GAS PEDAL, THE ENGINE STALKED AGAIN. CAR JUST PARKED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I RESTARTED THE ENGINE AGAIN, THIS TIME THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON, AND SAME PROBLEM HAPPENED AFTER THE CAR BARELY RAN OVER 400 YARDS. I FINALLY DROVE TO HOME WITH 7 OR 8 RESTARTS FOR 4 MILES. THEN ON MAY 21, I CALLED AAA TO TOW MY CAR TO A LOCAL VW DEALER. IN THE MORNING OF MAY 22, THE DEALER'S SERVICE ADVISER CALLED ME THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP WAS BROKEN AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE COST INCLUDING DIAGNOSE IS $873. HOWEVER, AROUND 4PM IN THE AFTERNOON, THE DEALER CALLED AGAIN AND ADVISED THAT THE REPLACEMENT OF FUEL PUMP DOES NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. The contact took the vehicle to a certified mechanic, who attempted to start the vehicle; however, the engine skipped, and the vehicle failed to start. The contact stated that the timing chain had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact learned of the Volkswagen Timing Chain Settlement, ID Number: 16/2765 for the timing chain; however, the campaign ended in 2019. The VIN was not under recall, and the vehicle was not included in the Volkswagen Timing Chain Settlement. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 112,322.

THE CAR SUDDENLY HAS 50% OR LESS POWER AND BEGINS STUMBLING VERY BADLY. ACCELERATION IS SO POOR THAT IT'S QUITE DANGEROUS IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND THE ABILITY TO PULL OFF THE ROAD IS SEVERELY HAMPERED. 3 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS MY CAR WOULD LOOSE POWER AND SHUT DOWN ON THE HIGHWAY. WHICH LEADS TO THE MOTOR EATING SO TO SPEAK THE OIL. INITIAL FAILURE OCCURRED WHILE ACCELERATING ONTO MAIN THOROUGHFARE. VEHICLE LOST ALL ENGINE POWER AND STALLED OUT. VEHICLE WAS SEND TO VW DEALER FOR REPAIR WHERE SOME WARRANTY REPAIRS WERE MADE AS WELL AS PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE THAT WAS ADVISED. THE CAR WAS RETURNED AS "REPAIRED" AND AFTER DRIVING HOME EXPERIENCED THE EXACT SAME FAILURE WHILE THE CAR WAS IDLING IN THE DRIVEWAY. CAR WAS RETURNED AGAIN AND EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE A SECOND TIME WHILE I WAS TRAVELING ON I275 IN DETROIT. THE CAR STALLED OUT AND I AGAIN LOST ALL POWER. I WAS FORCED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHERE THE CAR THEN FAILED TO START. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT. WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE, A VERY STRONG ODOR OF FUEL WAS PRESENT INSIDE THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, THE BATTERY LOST ITS CHARGE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE BATTERY FAILURE WAS RELATED TO THE FAILED FUEL PUMP. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 17V509000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE); HOWEVER, ANY OTHER DAMAGES CAUSED BY THE RECALLED PART WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. I RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL FROM VW IN OCTOBER OF 2017. IT SAID THERE COULD BE AN INTERRUPTION TO THE FUEL PUMP MODULE. RESULT COULD BE FUEL PUMP RUNNING CONTINUOUSLY, RESULTING IN DRAINED BATTERY AND/OR A NOT TART CONDITION OR CAUSE A LOTT OF MOTIVE POWER WHILE THE CARE IS IN MOTION. I STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN, THE CAR ACCELERATED NORMALLY AND AFTER A FEW MINUTES THE ENGINE SPUTTERED, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED, AND THE BATTERY LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE ENGINE QUIT. ATTEMPTS TO RESTART THE ENGINE FAILED. I WAS LOCATED AT AN INTERSECTION AND PUSHED THE CAR OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE ENGINE AND NOTICED AN AROMA OF BURNING PLASTIC. I OPENED THE HOOD AND THERE WAS SMOKE EMANATING UNDER THE TOP ENGINE COVER, TOP LH SIDE VIEWED FROM THE FRONT TO THE REAR. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION I NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A FIRE UNDER THE COVER. I REMOVED THE COVER AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. THE #1 IGNITION COIL HARNESS WAS MELTED FROM THE FIRE AND ASSOCIATED FIRE DAMAGE WAS NOTED ON THE INSIDE OF THE ENGINE COVER ABOVE THE ENGINE COIL LOCATION. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT THE FAILURE OF THE #1 ENGINE COIL WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE. I REPORTED THE INCIDENT IN DETAIL TO THE VOLKSWAGEN AMERICA CUSTOMER SUPPORT AS SOON AS I RETURNED HOME. VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY UNDERGOING REPAIRS TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE ITEMS. I RECENTLY PURCHASED A NEW 2009 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT CC SPORT VEHICLE THROUGH BOARDWALK VOLKSWAGEN OF RICHARDSON TEXAS, WHO HAD THE CAR SHIPPED TO THEIR LOCATION FROM TYNAN'S VW IN COLORADO. I PICKED UP MY BRAND NEW 2009 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT CC SPORT VEHICLE WITH 24 MILES ON THE AFTERNOON OF SATURDAY FEBRUARY 28, 2009. ON SUNDAY, AS I WAS DRIVING, THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AND FUMES STARTED COMING OUT THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKED OUT AND SPRAYED ALL OVER THE ENGINE RENDERING THE CAR A SAFETY HAZARD AND FIRE HAZARD. THE CAR WAS TOWED BY VW ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE TO BOARDWALK VW, WHICH UPON CLOSER INSPECTION, THEY FOUND THE TRANSMISSION LINES MISPOSITIONED IN SUCH A WAY THAT THE COOLING FAN MOTOR CUT THE LINES OPEN CAUSING CATASTROPHIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE. THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT HAS BEEN CONTAMINATED WITH POTENTIALLY FLAMMABLE TRANSMISSION FLUID, AND THE TRANSMISSION WAS RUN WITH EXTREMELY LOW LEVELS OF FLUID BY THE ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE SERVICE TO GET IT ON AND OFF THE TOW VEHICLE, SERIOUSLY REDUCING THE MARKET VALUE AND SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE. I WENT TO TAKE PICTURES OF THE COMPROMISED VEHICLE WITH THE FAULTY TRANSMISSION LINE ROUTING AND ANOTHER PASSAT CC VEHICLE WITH THE CORRECT TRANSMISSION LINE ROUTING. TO SEE THE PROBLEM, THE CAR WAS RAISED, AND THE UNDERSIDE ENGINE COMPARTMENT COVER WAS TAKEN OFF. IN THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION, THE TRANSMISSION LINES WERE ROUTED IN FRONT OF A RADIATOR TUBE, LEAVING THEM IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH THE ROTATING RADIATOR FAN, WHICH EVENTUALLY CUT OPEN THE LINES CAUSING THE LEAK. THE FLUID LEAKED INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND WAS BLOWN INTO THE ENTIRE ENGINE BY THE RADIATOR FAN. IN THE OTHER VEHICLE, THE TRANSMISSION LINES WERE ROUTED BEHIND THE RADIATOR TUBE, WHICH SHIELDS THEM FROM COMING INTO CONTACT WITH THE FAN. THIS CAN BE USED TO START A RECALL ON ALL PASSAT CC MODELS TO HAVE THEM CHECKED FOR INCORRECT ROUTING OF THE TRANSMISSION LINES, WHICH CAN CAUSE CATASTROPHIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE AND CUSTOMER PROBLEMS. *TR

The power steering system failed. At first I thought the steering wheel was locked. I started the car and could not turn the wheel. The power steering light illuminated in red and there was a loud beeping sound when the car is turned on. It was not until the car was towed that I realized that the wheel was not locked. The tow truck driver was able to turn the wheel to steer the vehicle on to the truck bed. I had someone plug in a diagnostic machine. I do not recall the exact code but he said the power steering system was not getting a signal. He replaced the steering angle sensor but that did not fix the issue. I had passenger at the time and was concerned for my safety. Luckily, the system failed while the car was parked, but we were left stranded. I have come across the following information on the Kelley Blue Book website: Steering: gear box (other than rack and pinion) NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID: 08V577000 Report Date: Oct 31 2008 Vehicles Affected: 130 Consequence: DRIVER ATTEMPTS TO OVERCOME THE SYSTEM DURING MALFUNCTION WILL CAUSE (1) VIBRATIONS IN THE STEERING WHEEL; (2) THE STEERING SYSTEM MOTOR TO TURN OFF; (3) THE RED STEERING SYSTEM MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE; AND (4) AUDIBLE WARNINGS TO CHIME. BOUGHT THIS AT A USED CAR DEALERSHIP. WITHIN TWO DAYS, THE EPC LIGHT WAS COMING ON. WHEN DRIVING THE CAR OR WHEN STARTING TO PUSH THE GAS PEDAL, THE GAS PEDAL HAS NO RESPONSE. IT'S AS IF THE PEDAL IS NOT WORKING. WE TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND HAD THEIR MECHANIC LOOK AT IT. THEY SAID IT WAS A SENSOR. SAID THEY FIXED IT. WITHIN A WEEK, THE EPC LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. THIS TIME, SAID IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY. THEY SAID THEY FIXED IT BUT WITHIN ABOUT 3 WEEKS, THE PEDAL ISSUE HAPPENED AGAIN. LUCKILY, WE HAVE STAYED ON LOCAL ROADS 40 MPH MAX BUT WHEN THE CAR DOESN'T GO WHEN IT IS SUPPOSED TO, I'M EXPECTING TO GET REARENDED. WE BROUGHT THIS TO OUR MECHANIC AND $1700 LATER, THE CAR IS STILL DOING THE SAME THING. THE EPC LIGHT IS ON AND THE CAR IS NOT GOING WHEN YOU PRESS THE GAS PEDAL. THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK WAS DEFECTIVE ON MY 2009 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT. THE VEHICLE HAD LESS THAN 35000 MILES ON IT. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT OCCASIONS WHILE I WAS TRYING TO TAKE THE VEHICLE OUT OF THE GARAGE. THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK ALSO CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STALL. IN ADDITION, IT COULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO SHAKE WHILE IT IS BEING DRIVEN. VOLKSWAGEN USA ADMITTED THAT THIS PART IS AN ISSUE. THEY ISSUED SEVERAL TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS ABOUT THE STEERING WHEEL COLUMN LOCK. SEVERAL OTHER MAKES AND MODELS OF VOLKSWAGENS WERE RECALLED AS A RESULT OF THIS ISSUE. I AM SEEKING JUDGEMENT FROM VOLKSWAGEN IN THE AMOUNT OF $588.91, WHICH IS THE COST OF REPAIR. VOLKSWAGEN REFUSES TO PAY FOR THE SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE THE CAR ONLY HAD A 3 YR WARRANTY. CHARRED REMAINS OF THE CAR WERE TOWED TO TROMBLY BROTHERS, 141 SUTTON ST NORTH ANDOVER, MA 01845. THIS VEHICLE HAD CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO A FAULTY CAM CHAIN TENSIONER. THIS IS BEEN KNOWN BY VOLKSWAGEN AS A SERVICE BULLETIN WAS ISSUED IN 2011. I WAS DRIVING ON A CITY ST. AND HAD TO PUSH THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE. THE FUEL PUMP AND SENDING UNITS HAVE ALSO FAILED IN THIS VEHICLE ALONG WITH THE TURBOCHARGER DIVERTER VALVE WHICH WAS A DEFECTIVE ITEM. ALL THESE ITEMS HAVE BEEN KNOWN BY VOLKSWAGEN FOR SOME TIME. THE COST OF REPAIR ON THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN OVER $5,000. I BELIEVE ALL THESE ISSUES SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL ITEM. FAILURES ON SOME OF THEM HAVE BEEN HAPPENING AT 20,000 MILES. THEY COULD POSE A SAFETY HAZARD DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU WERE DRIVING. VOLKSWAGEN HAS DENIED ANY REIMBURSEMENT ON MOST OF THESE ITEMS. HAD CONSUMERS KNOWN OF THESE ISSUES THE COST WOULD HAVE BEEN SIGNIFICANTLY LESS IF THE DEFECTIVE PARTS HAVE BEEN REPLACED. I AM CURRENTLY JOINING AN ACTIVE CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST VOLKSWAGEN FOR THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT. WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE POWER STEERING FAILED AND THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A CRASH. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO GARVEY VOLKSWAGEN (483 QUAKER RD, QUEENSBURY, NY 12804, (518) 793-3488). THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER TWICE AFTER THE CRASH AND WAS INFORMED THAT PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE, AND FURTHER TESTING WAS NEEDED ON THE FUEL PUMP. THE CONTACT THEN TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE A NEW FUEL PUMP WAS INSTALLED. ONE MONTH LATER, THE VEHICLE STALLED AGAIN WITHOUT WARNING. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,000. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 17V509000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE) AND STATED THAT THE PART WAS NOT AVAILABLE WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME FRAME TO SCHEDULE THE RECALL REPAIR. THE DEALER (BACHMAN VOLKSWAGEN, 9652 BLUEGRASS PKWY, LOUISVILLE, KY 40299, (502) 996-8943) DID NOT GIVE A SPECIFIC DATE FOR WHEN THE PART WOULD BECOME AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. ON 1 SEPTEMBER 2017, I PARKED MY VW IN MY GARAGE. THERE WERE NO ENGINE LIGHTS ON OR ANYTHING, BUT THE CAR HAD BEEN MAKING A LOUD FAN LIKE NOISE AFTER I REMOVED THE KEY FOB FROM THE IGNITION. ITS BEEN DOING THAT SINCE I BOUGHT IT. I DIDN'T START THE CAR BACK UP UNTIL 5 SEPTEMBER 2017 AFTER RETURNING FROM A WEEKEND WITH FAMILY. WHEN I STARTED MY VW UP I NOTICED THAT THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS NOW ILLUMINATED. I WAITED ABOUT A WEEK BEFORE I TOOK ANY ACTION HOPING THAT THE LIGHT WOULD JUST GO AWAY ON ITS OWN, BUT IT DIDN'T. ON 12 SEPTEMBER I TOOK THE CAR TO THE NEAREST AUTOZONE AND TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THEIR FREE ENGINE LIGHT DIAGNOSTIC CHECK. THE ERROR CODES READ "P0171 SYSTEM TOO LEAN (BANK 1)" AND "P12A2 FUEL RAIL PRESSURE SENSOR INAPPROPRIATELY HIGH." AT THE TOP OF THE PAPER IT STATED THAT THE MOST LIKELY SOLUTION FOR THESE ERROR CODES WAS TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP. ONCE I RETURNED HOME I CALLED THE LOCAL VOLKSWAGEN DEALERSHIP AND TOLD THEM WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS A RECALL OUT FOR MY MODEL VEHICLE, BUT THERE IS NO FIX AT THE MOMENT. I THEN WENT ONLINE TO SEE FOR MYSELF, THE MANUFACTURER RECALL NUMBER IS: 20AE AND THE NHTSA MANUFACTURER NUMBER IS: 17V509. I AM NOT SURE WHAT CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO RANDOMLY START HAVING THESE ISSUES. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THE CAR OUT OF TOWN ANYMORE, I ONLY DRIVE IT TO AND FROM WORK.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED INDEPENDENTLY WITHOUT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BEING DEPRESSED. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT NOTICED ENGINE OIL LEAKING FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE FAILURE RECURRED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAR MAIN ENGINE SEAL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. WHEN BACKING UP, OR GOING FORWARD SLOW, TO PARK WITH FRONT WHEELS TURNING THERE IS A SNAPPING SOUND WHICH A AN ARIZONE VW DEALER BLAMES ON SALT/SAND FROM NE. CAR WAS ON LIFT IN MAINE AND I PAINTED UNDERCARRAIGE AND THERE WAS NO SIGN OF RUST EXCEPT ON PARTS OF CLAMPS/SCREWS. VEHICLE WAS WASHED A MINIMUM OF ONCE A WEEK DURING WINTER. MOVED TO AZ AND THE SNAPPING IS MORE EVIDENT. VW REPLACED MUCH OF THE FRONT END AND HAD CAR FOR THREE WEEKS. I HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE CAR AND STILL HAD TO PAY OVER $1200.00. I WAS TOLD TO TAKE IT TO A VEHICLE REPAIR SERVICE TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT.

THE STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS STOPPED WORKING ONE DAY, ALONG WITH THE HORN. SEVERAL DAYS LATER, THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT CAME ON, AND THE DISPLAY SHOWS "AIRBAG FAULT" EVERY TIME I START THE CAR. I PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THIS CAR, AND VW REFUSES TO COVER THE REPAIR. MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM TO BE A FAULTY CLOCK SPRING.

VW'S MECHANICS FOUND THAT MY CAR HAD DEFECTIVE PARTS IN IT, WHICH WERE THERE FROM THE TIME I BOUGHT IT. I HAVE HAD SO MANY PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR THAT I DON'T TRUST IT, EVEN THOUGH VW'S MECHANICS SAID THEY'VE EITHER FIXED OR REPLACED THE BAD PARTS, BUT EACH TIME I'VE TAKEN IT IN FOR REPAIRS IN THE PAST, I'VE HAD THE SAME PARTS REPAIRED OR REPLACED OVER AND OVER. A SUMMARY OF THESE ISSUES: - REAR SIDE WINDOW SUNSCREEN HOOK - REPLACED DUE TO FALLING OUT ? YEAR 2009 - REAR WINDSHIELD SUNSCREEN - REPLACED BECAUSE IT HAD BROKEN ? YEAR 2011 - ENGINE FAULT - CAR DIED AND RUNNING ROUGHLY EVER SINCE ? YEAR 2011 - ENGINE LIGHT COMING ON 4 TIMES ? YEARS 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014 - DRIVER?S DOOR LOCK - HAD STOPPED LOCKING ? YEAR 2012 - ENGINE COVER - SCREWS FELL OUT OF THE REAR OF ENGINE COVER ? YEAR 2012 - 2 WATER PUMPS - REPLACED DUE TO COOLANT DRAINING COMPLETELY OUT OF THE RESERVOIR ? YEARS 2012 & 2013 - KNOB TO ADJUST SIDE MIRRORS CAME OFF AND NOW UNABLE TO ADJUST SIDE MIRRORS ? YEAR 2013 I HAVE PAID NEARLY $40,000 TO DATE ON THIS DEFECTIVE VEHICLE AND VW DOESN'T SEEM TO CARE HOW MANY TIMES I'VE BEEN PUT IN HARMS WAY AND INCONVENIENCED. THERE ARE 3 COMPLAINTS. I HAVE PURCHASED 2 VOLKSWAGEN PASSATS IN 2009. ONE IS WORKING FINE EXCEPT WINDSHIELD TANK LEAK, AND THE OTHER ONE HAS THE LEAKAGE AND AT THE SAME TIME AN ENGINE PROBLEM. I WOULD LIKE TO RECALL THE OTHER ONE OF WHICH I HAVE REGISTERED WITH VEHICLE ID HERE FOLLOWED BY THE BELOW REASONS AND REQUESTS. 1. WINDSHIELD TANK LEAKAGE SINCE THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT AND IT NATURALLY LEAKED. 2. ON THE 17TH OF NOVEMBER 2011, THE CAR SUDDENLY STOPPED AND EXHALED BLACK SMOKE AND I COULD NOT DRIVE ANY MORE. I DEFINITELY STOPPED AND CALLED A WRECK CAR AND WENT DIRECTLY TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER REPORTED AS STEERING COLUMN MODULE PROBLEM. (ALSO MENTIONED ABOUT INJECTOR ) 3. ON THE 14TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012, I WAS ON MY WAY TO WORK AND QUITE FAR AWAY FROM THE COMPANY, THE CAR SUDDENLY STOPPED WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AS 2011. I WAS LATE FOR WORK FOR SURE AND IT WAS ALMOST LIFE THREATENING CIRCUMSTANCE BECAUSE OF THE ENVIRONMENT. I CALLED THE WRECK CAR AND HERE IS ANOTHER REPORT FROM THE DEALER. "CUSTOMER STATES VEHICLE WAS DRIVING ROUGH, SHAKING AND EMITTING SMOKE EXCESSIVELY: SMELLED OF FUEL: MADE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WILL NOT START. CHECK AND ADVISE. INSPECTED VEHICLE RETRIEVED P0300 RANDOM MISFIRE P0303 CYLINDER #3 MISFIRE AND P0087 FOR FUEL RAIL. NOTICED LARGE AMOUNTS OF WHITE SMOKE COMING FROM EXHAUST AND STRONG ODOR OF FUEL...)" 4. I HAVE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY FOR 5 YEARS OR 60K MILE (WHICH WILL BE THE FIRST) AND THE DEALER FIXED 2 TIMES FOR FREE BECAUSE OF THE WARRANTY. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT. WHILE TURNING LEFT, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND CRASHED INTO A BRICK PILLAR HOLDING UP A BUILDING. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE ALSO ACCELERATED TWO ADDITIONAL TIMES. THE VEHICLES MOTOR BEGAN MAKING AN IRREGULAR NOISE ( SOUNDED LIKE AN AIRPLANE ENGINE) BETWEEN 2-3RPMS AND THERE WAS SERIOUS VIBRATION THROUGH THE ENTIRE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE CHUGGED ALONG AT LOW SPEEDS AND THE STEERING WAS DIFFICULT AND NOT THAT RESPONSIVE. THERE WAS SERIOUS VIBRATION THROUGH THE VEHICLE WAS LEFT AT THE SERVICE CENTER ON FRIDAY AS IT WAS LATE IN THE DAY. UPON RETURNING ON MONDAY MORNING, THE TECHNICIAN INFORMED ME THAT THE MOTOR MOUNT BOLTS (TWO) WERE MISSING AND THE THREADS FOR EACH WAS COMPLETELY STRIPPED. THE MOTOR WAS ROCKING BACK AND FORTH CREATING THIS DREADFUL NOISE.THE THREADS WERE RESTORED USING TAP AND DYE SET AND NEW BOLTS WERE INSTALLED. I WAS INFORMED THAT SOMETIMES THE BOLTS SNAP AND THIS IS A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT. I WAS TOLD THERE WERE OTHER SIGNS OF DAMAGE AND I KIND OF FEEL SOMETHING WILL BE FOUND ONCE MY WARRANTY IS UP AS A RESULT OF THIS MISHAPS. *TR
