THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 VOLVO S60. WHILE PARKED, A STRONG ODOR OF FUEL EMITTED OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE. THERE WAS NO FUEL VISIBLE ON THE GROUND. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO NOTICED THAT FUEL WAS LEAKING FROM THE TOP PART OF THE FUEL TANK. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 VOLVO S60. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE WAS DEFECTIVE, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SURGE ABNORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WOULD ALSO STALL INTERMITTENTLY AND EXHIBIT AN ABNORMAL INCREASE IN ENGINE RPMS. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE BOTH NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE, BUT DENIED ANY ASSISTANCE WITH REPAIRS TO THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 105,000.

2001 VOLVO S60. ATTORNEY WRITES ON BEHALF OF CONSUMER IN REGARDS TO PROBLEMS WITH VEHICLE AS DESCRIBED IN NHTSA ACTION NUMBER PE05-041*TGW THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER REGARDING THE RECALL. HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT EXHIBITING THE CHARACTERISTICS AT THE TIME. THE DEALER CLAIMED THEIR DIAGNOSTIC TEST DID NOT INDICATE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE ETM, BUT THERE COULD HAVE BEEN SOMETHING WRONG WITH AN OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE SENSOR, WHICH THEY SUGGESTED MIGHT BE A PART OF THE PROBLEM. THE CONSUMER WAS CHARGED $103 FOR THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST, AND THEY INDICATED IT WOULD COST $270 TO REPLACE THE SENSOR. THE CONSUMER DECLINED THE REPAIRS. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A REPAIR FACILITY AND THEY REPLACED BOTH TEMPERATURE SENSORS. FOLLOWING THE REPLACEMENT OF THE SENSORS, THE TECHNICIAN REPORTED THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED SYMPTOMS OF SURGING, IDLE FLUCTUATING AND LOSS OF POWER. CLEARLY, THE SENSORS WERE NOT THE PROBLEM. No warning lamps prior to the fire. Symptom of problem was the radiator cooling fan staying on after vehicle was turned off, which caused the battery to discharge.

ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS: FIRST, THE LIGHT BULBS, INCLUDING HEADLIGHTS, BRAKE LIGHTS, AND TURN SIGNALS, ON MY 2001 VOLVO S60 HAD TO BE REPLACED AT LEAST EVERY TWO MONTHS. THIS IS CAUSING PROBLEMS WITH VISIBILITY AND ALSO WITH THE LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENT -- THEY DON'T LIKE IT WHEN I'M DRIVING THROUGH TOWN WITH NO LIGHTS ON. SECOND, THE INTERIOR LAMPS ABOVE MY DASHBOARD AND THE SUNROOF STOPPED WORKING ON AN INTERMITTENT BASIS. FOR NO SEEN REASON, I WON'T BE ABLE TO OPEN OR CLOSE THE SUNROOF (NOT GREAT WHEN IT'S RAINING AND I CAN'T GET IT CLOSED) AND THE LIGHTS WON'T WORK EITHER. *JB

OUR VOLVO S60 HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING A WELL KNOWN ISSUE WITH WHAT'S COMMONLY CALLED TRANSMISSION FLARE. WHEN SHIFTING INTO LOWER GEARS FROM A STOP OR AT LOWER SPEEDS AND IN SLOW TRAFFIC THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION JERKS THE CAR FORWARD SEVERELY. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF POSTS IN ONLINE CAR FORUMS WITH CONSUMERS COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS SAME PROBLEM. WHILE IT STARTED OUT AS A NUISANCE THE PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE AND IS AGGRAVATED BY HOT WEATHER, SO MUCH FOR TAKING THE VOLVO ON A DRIVE FOR SUMMER VACATION. WE TRUSTED VOLVO'S QUALITY AND INTEGRITY WHEN PURCHASING OUR CAR AND ARE VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALL ISSUED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. WHEN WE ASKED THE DEALERSHIP WHERE WE PURCHASED THE CAR WHAT WE COULD DO TO FIX THE PROBLEM THEY SUGGESTED WE PURCHASE A NEW CAR FROM THEM. SHAME ON YOU VOLVO. IN 2008, AT ABOUT 93K MILES, THE TRANSMISSION ON MY 2001 VOLVO S60 FAILED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON A MAIN THOROUGHFARE. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO AVOID BEING IN AN ACCIDENT. I HAD A VOLVO DEALER INSTALL A NEW VOLVO TRANSMISSION. IN 2014, AT ABOUT 123K MILES (OR ABOUT 30K MILES ON THE NEW TRANSMISSION), THE SECOND TRANSMISSION FAILED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON A LOCAL STREET. AGAIN, I WAS ABLE TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT. A SEARCH OF THE NHTSA DATABASE AND OTHER ONLINE SOURCES SHOWED THAT THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS EARLY TRANSMISSION FAILURES WITH VOLVOS LIKE MINE. I NOTICED MY CAR JERKING WHEN IT SHIFTS, SO I THOUGHT IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION OR SOMETHING, SO I BROUGHT IT IN A VOLVO DEALERSHIP AND THEY FOUND OUT THAT IT WASN'T THE TRANSMISSION BUT " DSEM NEEDS ETM AND BREATHER BOX ENGINE LIGHT) OR WHAT THE SERVICE ADVISOR SAID THE THROTTLE MODULE AND I WAS SURPRISED THAT THEY DIDN'T TELL ME OR ASKED ME IF I KNOW ABOUT THE RECALL. VOLVO S60 OF THE FIRST GENERATION HAS HAD MAJOR TRANSMISSION ISSUES. MANY HAVE FAILED, SLIPPED, AND HAVE DESTROYED THE VEHICLE. ACCORDING TO OTHER DRIVERS IT SEEMS THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN FIXED AFTER 2005. IT IS NOT NORMAL FOR TRANSMISSIONS TO BE GOING OUT BEFORE 100K MILES. I'M SURE MANY DRIVERS HAVE COMPLAINED OF THIS ISSUE. MANY TIMES I HAVE ALMOST BEEN IN WRECKS BECAUSE IT WILL NOT GO INTO GEAR AND WILL CLUNK INTO GEAR LURCHING ME FORWARD. THE SOFTWARE WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT WOULD PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AFTER YOU TOUCHED THE BRAKE TO SAVE GAS MILLAGE. THIS SOFTWARE WAS REMOVED FOR AN UNKNOWN REASON. MOST LIKELY BEING BECAUSE IT WAS DAMAGING TRANSMISSIONS. TRANSMISSION DO NOT SHIFT INSTANTLY. SO YOU WOULD BE IN NEUTRAL THEN IT WOULD SWITCH INTO GEAR. AFTER MANY UPDATES AND SMALL CHANGES TO THE TRANSMISSION REPORTS OF TRANSMISSION FAILURES HAVE GONE DOWN MAJORLY AFTER 2005. IT IS NOT RIGHT THAT IT TOOK 4 YEARS TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. *JS

TERRIBLE GAS SMELL EVERY TIME I DRIVE IT. I GOT SOMEONE TO CHECK IT OUT, THERE IS GAS LEAKING FROM THE FUEL PUMP. THIS PERSON PUT SOME PUTTY OVER THE LEAK WHICH STOPPED THE SMELL BUT THIS IS NOT SAFE. I SEE A RECALL FOR THE FUEL PUMP BUT IT SAYS MY CAR DOESN'T HAVE A CURRENT RECALL.

I COMMUTE APPROXIMATELY 30 MILES TO WORK. DURING MY COMMUTE ON NOV. 2, 2005 THERE WAS NOTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY. ALL GAUGES READING WITHIN NORMAL LIMITS. I PARKED MY CAR. WENT INSIDE MY PLACE OF WORK. WITHIN 7 (SEVEN) MINUTES I WAS NOTIFIED BY A COWORKER THAT MY CAR WAS ON FIRE. THE RESULTING ENGINE FIRE TOTALED MY 2001 S60 T5 VOLVO. ON SATURDAY APRIL 2, 2005 ,AT ABOUT 3:00 P.M., I WAS RETURNING HOME WITH MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER FROM A SPRING BREAK TRIP TO WASHINGTON D.C. WE HAD DRIVEN FOR A GOOD PART OF THE DAY THROUGH DIFFICULT CONDITIONS...CONSIDERABLE RAIN AND EVEN A SOME SNOW SHOWERS IN EASTERN OHIO. WHILE DRIVING ON THE OHIO TURNPIKE IN THE VICINITY OF TOLEDO, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY LOST POWER, THAT IS, THE CAR DECELERATED REGARDLESS OF FOOT-PRESSURE ON THE GAS PEDAL. ALTHOUGH I WAS AT THE TIME IN THE MIDDLE LANE OF A RATHER BUSY INTERSTATE HIGHWAY, I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY, WHERE THE CAR STOPPED RUNNING ALTOGETHER. I LET THE CAR SIT FOR A MINUTE, AND THEN ATTEMPTED TO START THE ENGINE AGAIN. ALTHOUGH THE ENGINE TURNED OVER IT WOULD NOT RUN. THROUGH INFORMATION PROVIDED BY GEICO INSURANCE ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE FACILITY WERE ABLE TO SUMMON A TOW TRUCK, WHICH DELIVERED THE CAR, AND MY FAMILY TO A VOLVO DEALERSHIP SCHMIDT IN PERRYSBURG, OHIO AT ABOUT 5:00 P.M. BECAUSE OF THE HEAVY TRAFFIC MUCH OF IT CONSISTING OF MASSIVE TRAILER-TRUCKS TRAVELING WEST I THINK IT REASONABLE TO SAY THAT THE EXPOSURE TO RISK WAS HIGH. HAD THE WEATHER VERY CHILLY TEMPERATURES, A PIECING NORTH WIND, AND THE EVER-PRESENT THREAT OF RAIN BEEN ANY BETTER I WOULD HAVE GUIDED MY FAMILY TO THE SHELTER OF AN OVERPASS ABOUT ONE QUARTER-MILE TO THE WEST UNTIL THE TOW-TRUCK ARRIVED. I EXPERIENCED A PROBLEM WITH THREE OUT OF A SET OF FOUR GOODYEAR AMERICAN EAGLE TIRES PURCHASED AT WALMART IN NORTH CAROLINA ON 09/25/2003. THESE WERE 60,000 MILE RATED (TREAD WEAR RATING 420) RADIAL TIRES SIZE: P205/55R16. THESE WERE FOR MY VOLVO S-60...THE MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDED SIZE. I KEPT THE RECOMMENDED PSI @ 38 TIRE PRESSURE. I HAD THEM ROTATED AND REBALANCED SEVERAL TIMES, USUALLY AT ABOUT 5,000/6,000 MILE INTERVALS. DURING MY MOST RECENT SERVICE FOR ROTATION AND REBALANCING ON AUGUST 31, THE WALMART STORE IN ROANOKE, VA BROUGHT THIS DEFECT TO MY ATTENTION. THREE OF THE TIRES HAD DEVELOPED SEVERE AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CRACKS ON THE INSIDE SIDEWALL BETWEEN THE TREAD AND THE RIM CIRCLING THE INSIDE OF THE SIDEWALL AND APPEARED TO BE A "BLOW-OUT" POTENTIAL HAZARD. THE MANUFACTURER'S PRODUCTION CODE WAS: DOT PJT24AHR2403. WALMART ADJUSTED AND REPLACED THIS SET WITH THE SAME TIRE THAT THEY HAD IN STOCK. I REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO GOODYEAR AND WAS GIVEN A CLAIM # 789726. I PHONED THEM TO ASK WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO AVOID THIS PROBLEMS OR TO AVOID THIS SAME PROBLEM FOR OCCURRING ON THE CURRENT SET THAT WALMART HAD PUT ON. THEY TOLD ME THAT NOTHING COULD HAVE BEEN DONE OR COULD BE GUARANTEED ON THE NEWER SET. PIRELLI FOUR SEASONS P6, TIRE SIZE P235/45 R 17, DOT NO. XBCUC236, I HAVE HAD THREE INSTANCES WHERE THE TIRES HAVE EXPERIENCED SUDDEN DEFLATION WHILE PARKING ALONG A VALLEY CURB. NO DAMAGE TO THE TIRES BUT HAD TO HAVE THEM REMOUNTED AND BALANCED. I HAVE ALSO HAD TWO INSTANCES WHERE THE TIRES HAD SUDDEN DEFLATION WHILE DRIVING, ONCE AT 35 MPH AND ONCE AT 70 MPH. IN BOTH INSTANCES, I WAS NOT IMMEDIATELY AWARE OF THE DEFLATION AND THE TIRES WERE RUINED AS THEY WERE DRIVEN FLAT. THE MILEAGE ON THE PERELLI P6 TIRES FOR VOLVO S60 T5 IS ONLY 11,000 MILES. DURING A CRUSING ON THE FREEWAY, THE DRIVER HEARD A LOUD "POP" NOISE INSIDE THE CAR. WHILE STOPPING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, I NOTICED ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS ON THE LOWER RIGHT SIDE OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CAME ON AND IMMEDIATELY WENT OFF, NO OTHER INDICATIONS. WHILE WAITING AT THE LIGHT, EVERYTHING APPEARED NORMAL. WHEN THE LIGHT CHANGED TO GREEN, I PUSHED ON THE GAS PEDAL TO PULL AWAY AND NOTHING HAPPENED. THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AT ALL. NO LIGHTS WERE ON. I PUSHED TO GAS PEDAL TO THE FLOOR AND BACK UP AND THEN HALF WAY DOWN, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WORKED. IT WOULD NOT GO ANY FASTER THAN IDLE. NO INCREASE IN RPM'S AT ALL, NO MATTER WHAT POSITION THE GAS PEDAL WAS IN. I'M IN THE FAST LANE AT RUSH HOUR AND COULD ONLY GO ABOUT 4 MILES PER HOUR. I MANAGED TO WORK MY WAY OVER THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND PULL INTO A PARKING LOT. I STOPPED AND PUT THE CAR INTO PARK. I HEARD A "CLICK" AS IF A RELAY WAS RESET. I THEN PUT THE CAR INTO REVERSE AND IT SEEMED TO WORK. I PUT IT IN DRIVE AGAIN AND EVERYTHING APPEARED TO WORK OKAY AFTER THAT. MY 2001 S60 2.4T VOLVO SEDAN HAS HAD NUMEROUS ERROR MESSAGES DISPLAYED OVER THE 4 YEARS I HAVE OWNED IT. MOST TIMES THERE WAS NO PROBLEM IN DRIVING THE VEHICLE UNTIL I COULD SAFELY PULL OVER. THE "FIX" FOR THE ERROR MESSAGE WAS TO SHUT OFF THE ENGINE, SIT FOR A MOMENT AND RESTART. ON TWO OTHER FRIGHTFUL OCCASIONS, HOWEVER, I LOST STEERING ASSIST AND ACCELERATION. BOTH TIMES I WAS ON BUSY INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS AND FEARED FOR MY LIFE AS MY CAR LIMPED TOWARD THE BREAKDOWN LANE. IT APPEARS THAT I HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY FORTUNATE IN THAT BOTH TIMES THE CAR LOST POWER AND CONTROL THAT IT STARTED UP AGAIN. I WILL BE SUBMITTING 2 ACCOUNTS ONLINE. MY REPAIR GARAGE CONFIRMED YESTERDAY THAT THERE ARE A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF ERROR MESSAGES CAUSED BY THE "THROTTLE CONTROL" AND THAT I HAVE TO TAKE THE CAR BACK TO THE ORIGINAL DEALER. MY 2001 VOLVO S60, AT 68K MILES, HAD CRACKS IN THE FUEL PUMP, CAUSING A STRONG GAS SMELL DUE TO THE LEAKS. THIS APPEARS TO BE A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM WITH THE S60 IN PARTICULAR, SINCE NUMEROUS POSTINGS HAVE BEEN SEEN REGARDING THIS SAME PROBLEM. MY DAUGHTER WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AND SURROUNDED BY CARS ON A FOUR LANE ROAD. DESPITE THE TECHNICIAN'S ADVISE, I WAS STILL VERY WORRIED, SO DUE TO OTHER PROBLEMS THAT DIDN'T HAPPENED BEFORE THE REPAIR , I SCHEDULED TO BRING IT BACK FOR A CHECK ON TUESDAY (4/24). HOWEVER, ON SUNDAY(4/22), AS SOON AS I DROVE OUT FROM MY APARTMENT, I HEARD A CRACK SOUND AND THOUGHT THAT WAS A FLAT TIRE. I STEPPED OUT AND CHECKED THE TIRES, NOTHING WAS WRONG. WHEN I BACKED UP THE CAR, MY FRIENDS SAW PARTS ARE FALLING OUT FROM THE CAR AND THE WHEEL WAS OFF THE AXLE HITTING THE FENDER. THIS ALL HAPPENED ON THE LEFT SIDE OF MY CAR WHICH WAS DAMAGED IN THE ACCIDENT, AND THE DEALER IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE THAT FIXED. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME THIS WAS CAUSED BY BALL JOINT DETACHMENT. HE SAID THIS MIGHT BE AN AFTERMATH OF MY FIRST ACCIDENT. IN OCTOBER 2007, I INQUIRED OF FIELDS VOLVO OF WAUKESHA WISCONSIN, ABOUT A MALFUNCTIONING TEMPERATURE GAGE. THE GAGE WOULD OFTEN DISPLAY A FAULTY READING, SHOWING THAT THE CAR WAS OVERHEATING WHEN IN FACT IT WAS NOT. WHEN I BOUGHT MY CAR IN FOR AN INSPECTION OF THE MATTER, JASON FISCHER SERVICE ADVISOR, INFORMED ME THAT I NEEDED AN ELECTRONICS BO ( SEE ATTACHED RECEIPT). HE ASSURED ME THAT WAS THE PROBLEM, SO I AGREED TO ALLOW HIM TO REPLACE IT AND WAS CHARGED $537.15 FOR THE PROCEDURE. HOWEVER, A YEAR LATER IN JULY 2008, THE PROBLEM RESURFACED. EVENTUALLY, THE COOLING FAN MALFUNCTIONED AND WOULD NOT SHUT OFF. THIS PROBLEM ALSO CAUSED THE BATTERY TO DRAIN. I TOOK MY CAR TO AUTO WERKS IMPORT CENTRE IN MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, WHO THROUGH RESEARCH OF THE PROBLEM, FOUND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ISSUED FOR THE COOLING FAN IN NOVEMBER 2004. I OWN A 2001 VOLVO S60 2.4T. I HAVE LATELY NOTICED A STRONG GASOLINE ODOR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY TELL ME THE GASOLINE PUMP NEEDS TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THERE IS A PLASTIC CAP THE JOINS THE PUMP TO THE GAS TANK THAT IS CRACKED AND THAT IS CAUSING GASOLINE TO LEAK. I HAVE RESEARCHED WITH SEVERAL SERVICE SHOPS, AND THEY TELL ME THEY HAVE SEEN MANY OCCURRENCES WITH THESE MODEL FOR THAT PROBLEM, WHICH FOR A 5 YEAR OLD CAR SEEMS UNACCEPTABLE. IT IS A VERY EXPENSIVE PART AND LABOR AND IT SEEMS IT ALL CAUSED BECAUSE OF A DEFECTIVE PLASTIC "CAP" THAT JOINS THE PUMP TO THE TANK. I HAD THE DEALER REPLACE THE PART, BUT SEEMS TO ME THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM THAT SHOULD BE COVERED BY A MANUFACTURER'S RECALL. ALSO, THE CAR HAS PLASTIC OR FIBERGLASS MOLDING THAT RUN ON TOP BETWEEN THE DOORS AND CEILING THAT HAVE BUILT UP A LOT OF RUST, WHICH AGAIN THE DEALER STATES ARE NOT COVERED UNDER ANY WARRANTY, BUT AGAIN, FOR A 5 YEAR OLD CAR SEEMS UNACCEPTABLE. *JB

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN AFTER REACHING 30 MPH AND CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. THE CONTACT TRIED BRAKING, BUT THE BRAKES FAILED, DUE TO THE THROTTLE ISSUE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A SERVICE DEALER TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE. A POLICE REPORT WAS TAKEN.

AT 53,000 MILES (FEBRUARY 2006) MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, SERVICE TRANSMISSION LIGHT AND URGENT SERVICE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AT THE SAME TIME. HOWEVER, I WAS I NOT EXPERIENCING ANY NOTICEABLE DRIVABILITY ISSUES. (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SOME SLIGHTLY ROUGH GEAR SHIFTING - BUT I DIDN'T THINK MUCH OF IT). THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT THE FAULT CODE WAS RELATED TO MY TRANSMISSION AND THAT I NEED A SOFTWARE UPGRADE TO MY TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE). IF THE FAULT CODE RETURNED AFTER THE UPGRADE, MY TRANSMISSION WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. AND THAT MOST LIKELY (99.9%) THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE WOULD CORRECT THE PROBLEM. IN ADDITION, I HAD TO PAY $340 FOR THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE BECAUSE I WAS 6 MONTHS / 3,000 MILES OUT OF WARRANTY AND SOFTWARE ISSUES WHERE NOT COVERED BY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY (3RD PARTY - EASYCARE -[VIA FORD]). A FEW WEEKS LATER (3/5/06), THE CHECK ENGINE COMES ON AGAIN AND THE DRIVABILITY DETERIORATES RAPIDLY ON MY TRIP HOME FROM WORK. HIGH RPM'S - LITTLE POWER - ABRUPT SHIFTING. FORTUNATELY, I WAS CLOSE TO HOME (WITHIN 1 MILE). IT FELT LIKE THE TRANSMISSION FELL APART. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER (3/8/06), AFTER TWO DAYS OF 'TESTING', I'M TOLD THE ETM WAS REPLACED AT NO CHARGE AND TO COME PICK UP THE CAR. I PICKED IT UP AND COULD NOT LEAVE THE DEALER DRIVEWAY. THEY APOLOGIZED PROFUSELY AND SAID THE ETM WAS REPLACED BUT NOTICED THAT THERE IS STILL A PROBLEM. AFTER A FEW DAYS OF TROUBLESHOOTING BY THE DEALER, I WAS INFORMED THAT THE CAR NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION (AND I HAD TO PAY AN ADDITIONAL $200 FOR EXTENDED WARRANTY CO-PAY). *NM

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT NO PARTICULAR SPEED, THE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE DEALER DETERMINED METAL SHAVINGS WERE PRESENT IN THE OIL PAN RESULTING IN THE ENGINE NEEDING REPLACED AND NO REPAIRS WERE MADE. ADDITIONALLY, THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT INTERMITTENTLY SHIFT OUT OF PARK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION AND REPAIR.

MY ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE FAILED ON MY 2001 VOLVO V70 AT APPROXIMATELY 48,000 MILES. I WAS LUCKY THAT PERFORMANCE WAS ONLY REDUCED AND I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO THE DEALER FOR THE APPROXIMATELY $1200 REPAIR, BUT I DID CONSIDER IT TO BE A VERY DANGEROUS FAILURE IN THAT THE CAR APPARENTLY CAN CONVERT INTO A "LIMP HOME" MODE WHICH WOULD REDUCE SPEED TO A MAXIMUM OF ABOUT 20 MPH WITHOUT ANY ADVANCE WARNING, WHICH COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS IN EXPRESSWAY DRIVING, OF WHICH I DO A LOT. I AM CONCERNED THE NEW REPLACEMENT ETM IS THE SAME DEFECTIVE PART AND IS NOT PERFORMING PROPERLY AFTER ONLY ABOUT 2 WEEKS OF USE, AND CONSIDER THE CAR TO STILL BE DANGEROUS AND THE PART DEFECTIVE. *JB

DT: CONSUMER STATED 2001 VOLVO S 60 WAS HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE UNIT THAT REGULATED THE AIR FLOW INTO THE BRAKES AND ENGINE. THE CAR WAS MAKING A HISSING SOUND, LIKE AIR BEING LET INTO THE CABIN. THIS WAS HAPPENING A LOT, ESPECIALLY IN THE HEAT. THE BRAKES HAD TO BE DEPRESSED TO GET THE CAR TO STOP. CONSUMER HAD THE CAR FIXED LAST WEEK AT THE DEALERSHIP; THE MECHANIC INFORMED CONSUMER THAT THE AIR PUMP TO THE BRAKES HAD TO BE REPLACED. THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT STALLING,OR LOSING POWER, NOR WERE THERE NEAR MISSES. CONSUME R WAS JUST RESPONDING TO THIS BECAUSE OF WHAT SHE SAW ON THE NEWS. THE WARRANTY EXPIRED. PROBLEMS WITH VOLVO HEAVY DUTY TRUCK: SINCE THE VERY FIRST WEEK OF OWNERSHIP WE HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH OUR BRAND NEW $130,000 RIG. IN A NUT SHELL HERE IS A LIST OF THE MAJORITY OF PROBLEMS THAT WE HAVE HAD SINCE MARCH 2001: -5 ALTERNATORS...THE FIRST TWO ACTUALLY FELL OFF WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY!!?? -3 CAM SHAFTS (DETROIT DIESEL)... THE FIRST ONE WENT @ APPROXIMATELY 40,000 MILES -MAJOR VIBRATION/LOUD RATTLE COMING THROUGH THE GEAR SHIFTER **HAS BEEN CONSTANT SINCE I DROVE IT OFF OF THE LOT...THEY SAY THAT IT IS NORMAL?? -DESPITE THE LARGE RED WARNING LABEL ON THE TRUCK THAT STATES THAT PRE-MATURE WEAR WILL OCCUR, THE VOLVO MECHANICS HAVE ADJUSTED THE DRIVELINE ANGLES NUMEROUS TIMES. EVEN IF THEY EVER DID GET THE NOISE TO GO AWAY, DAMAGE HAS ALREADY OCCURRED! -TRANSMISSION WILL NOT SHIFT PROPERLY... VOLVO MECHANICS SAY IT SHIFTS NORMAL AND THAT IT IS ALL IN MY HEAD!!!!!!? (TRUST ME, MANY MECHANICS WHO DO NOT WORK FOR THE MANUFACTURER AGREE WITH ME!!) -2 ECM COMPUTERS -3 ON BOARD DISPLAY COMPUTERS -3 SETS OF STEER TRIES (FIRST SET LASTED 90,000 MILES) -2 SETS OF WHEEL BEARINGS. EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE BEEN ADJUSTED AT THE SPECIFIED INTERVALS! -THE PAINT ON THE HOOD BEGAN PEELING OFF BEFORE I GOT THE TRUCK HOME!! -PASSENGER SIDE DOOR LOCKS MALFUNCTIONED ON THE FIRST TRIP OUT!! -4 NEW BATTERIES HAD TO BE BOUGHT 1 DAY AFTER THE 1 YEAR WARRANTY EXPIRED!!! I HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE BATTERIES PRIOR TO THE WARRANTY EXPIRING, HOWEVER MANY VOLVO MECHANICS TOLD ME THAT THEY TESTED FINE...I HAVE PROOF THAT THEY WERE NOT OK! ...AND VOLVO SAYS THAT THIS IS NORMAL??!!
