TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 VOLVO S60. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH, THERE WAS A FUEL ODOR EMITTING FROM OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000 THE CONSUMER SMELLED FUEL ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE, WHICH WOULD CEASE ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED AND PLACED IN PARK. IT OCCURRED WHEN THE ACCELERATOR WAS PRESSED, WHICH IN TURN PUT PRESSURE ON THE FUEL LINE AND FUEL PUMP. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO FIND A PROBLEM. THE CONSUMER RECENTLY FOUND THE FUEL SMELL WORSENING AND A LOSS OF FUEL. A MECHANIC CHECKED OUT THE PROBLEM AND FOUND THE FUEL PUMP FLANGE WAS CRACKED. AFTER, THE DIAGNOSIS, THE CONSUMER CONTACTED THE DEALER, AND WAS INFORMED, HER VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL, AND IT HAD EXPIRED IN 2011. UPDATED 08/12/14

THE DRIVER'S CONTROL DOOR MODULE (DDM) HAS FAILED (VERY COMMON ON THE S60). THIS MODULE CONTROLS THE WINDOWS, DOOR LOCKS, REAR-VIEW MIRRORS, AND CHILD-SAFETY LOCKS ON THE REAR DOORS. NOW, BOTH REAR DOORS ARE PERMANENTLY LOCKED, AND CAN ONLY BE OPENED WITH THE OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLES. I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. A NEW REPLACEMENT UNIT FROM VOLVO WILL SOLVE THIS ISSUE, BUT VOLVO DEALERS CHARGE ABOUT $800. A USED DDM WILL NOT WORK, DUE TO THE SOFTWARE ADDRESSING SCHEME USED BY VOLVO.

THE VEHICLE JUST STOPS WHILE DRIVING, ALL OF THE PANEL LIGHTS COME ON CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS. HAD TO REPLACE THE OCM SENSOR AND THE ECM SENSOR MCKIVITT VOLVO IN SAN LEANDRO ([XXX]) SERVICE MGR. HAS NEVER MENTION ANY TYPE OF RECALLS TO THE CAR. THEY ALSO REPLACED THE FUEL INJECTION AT MY COST. HAD TO GET A SMOG IN AUG 2013, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS COME BACK ON NOT ALLOWING ME TO SMOG WITH OUT REPAIRS TO OXYGEN SENSORS, DURING THIS VISIT MY CONTROL ARMS WERE NOTICEABLY BROKEN, THEY SAID NOTHING. I FOUND OUT WHEN I GOT THE CAR BACK AFTER THEM CHANGING THE OXYGEN SENSORS TO PASS SMOG AND I GOT THE SMOG AND A OIL CHANGE THEY NOTIFIED ME, I HAD THEM REPLACED BY A CHEAPER MECH IN APRIL 2014 @ 75,000 MILES. NOW IT'S AUGUST 2014 AND I WAS DRIVING DOWN VERY STEEP HILL@ 45MPH AND THE CAR JUST SHUT OFF CAUSING LIMP MODE AND ME HITTING A CURB TO STOP. TOWED BACK TO DEALERSHIP@ 84,601 MILES AND BEING TOLD IT'S NORMAL, CLEAN OR REPLACE THE ETM SENSOR NOW CHARGING ME $2,000. I HAVE NEVER RECEIVED RECALL. I'M LOST NOW WITHOUT A VEHICLE. ISN'T VOLVO SUPPOSED TO FIX THIS ISSUE OR DO WE HAVE TO DIE AND THEN YEARS LATER YOU GUYS AT VOLVO CORPORATION FIGURE THERE WAS A MALFUNCTION.. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT TO DO??? ELECTRICAL PANEL FAILS (GAS GAUGE SAYS EMPTY), PASSENGER AND REAR DOOR LOCKS, FUEL DOOR, AND TRUNK OPENING ALSO FAILS. INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS AS CANNOT OPEN THE DOORS UNLESS PULLING THE DOOR LOCK UP MANUALLY FROM INSIDE THE CAR SO THEREFORE CAN'T GET TO CHILDREN IN THE BACKSEAT WITHOUT CRAWLING THROUGH THE FRONT SEAT AND MANUALLY UNLOCKING THEIR DOOR. HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH GAS IS IN THE CAR BECAUSE GAS GAUGE FAILS AND CANNOT GET FUEL DOOR TO OPEN CONSITENTLY MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO REFUEL. CAR ALARM WENT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT AND COULD NOT OPEN THE CAR DOORS TO TURN IT OFF BECAUSE OF ELECTRICAL FAILURE AND THEREFORE BATTERY DRAINED. IT IS REALLY DANGEROUS TO NOT BE ABLE TO LOCK AND UNLOCK THE CAR DOORS. A CHILD COULD GET TRAPPED IN THE VEHICLE OR SOMEONE COULD GET INTO THE CAR FOR FEAR OF LOCKING DOORS AND NOT BEING ABLE TO GET THEM UNLOCKED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A VOLVO DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THE FAILURE AS THE ETM AND WAS REPLACED IT AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE. THE ETM FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WILL BE DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 154000.

I OWN A VOLVO S60 AND AM HAVING PROBLEMS (RACING IDLE, UNCONTROLLABLE CRUISE CONTROL, AND COMPLETE DYING OF ENGINE RANDOMLY) WHICH ARE RELATED TO EVENTUAL FAILURE OF THE ETM WHICH COULD BE A CATASTROPHIC EVENT, RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. VOLVO HAS ISSUED A LIMITED RECALL BUT IN ORDER TO BE GRANTED THIS FIX ONE'S VEHICLE MUST FAIL A CERTAIN TEST. IF THERE IS NO FAILURE, NO FIX.(THE TEST IS NOT A COMPREHENSIVE METER OF FAILURE) A SOFTWARE UPGRADE IS OFFERED WHICH IS ESSENTIALLY AN OVERRIDE , IN WHICH THE SYSTEM IS SET TO IGNORE SYMPTOMS, SO THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DOES NOT EMPLOY. THIS IS NOT A FIX.. THE PROBLEM EXISTING IS THAT MY CAR EXHIBITS ALL THE PRELIMINARY PROBLEMS OF THE EVENTUAL FAILURE OF THE ETM WHICH WILL RESULT IN A LIMP HOME MODE ,WHEREAS THE CAR WILL ONLY GO APPROX 15MPH, AND IS IMMEDIATE, MEANING THAT WHEN THIS HAPPENS ONE HOPES THEY ARE NOT ON THE FREEWAY .... WELL, ONE CAN USE ONES IMAGINATION. THIS IS VERY DISTURBING. STILL VOLVO WISHES TO WAIT UNTIL THE COMPLETE FAILURE OBVIOUSLY, AND I DO NOT WISH TO GAMBLE WITH MY LIFE IN THIS WAY. THE SYMPTOMS AT THIS TIME ARE RANDOM, INDICATIVE OF COMPLETE FAILURE IN THE FUTURE. VOLVO HESITATES TO TAKE COMPLETE RESPONSIBILITY OF THIS PROBLEM; BUT ARE AWARE OF THE DEFECTIVE ENGINEERING RESPONSIBLE FOR IT. EVEN THEIR FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM IS TO REPLACE WITH THE SAME ETM (ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE) WHICH AGAIN, IS ONLY BUYING TIME UNTIL IT FAILS ALSO. BUT JUST TRY TO GET YOUR MODULE REPLACED ; NOT AN EASY THING TO DO, UNLESS U WANT TO PAY FOR IT OUTRIGHT, AND THAT IS WRONG CONSIDERING THIS IS A VOLVO PROBLEM, AGAIN, THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF. I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AND WITHOUT WARNING THE ENGINE LOST POWER AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I COASTED OFF TO THE SHOULDER AND THE ENGINE WOULD ONLY IDLE, AND EVEN THAT WAS ROUGH. THE MESSAGE INDICATOR ON THE DASH SAID SOMETHING LIKE "REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE". I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO GENGRAS VOLVO IN MERIDEN. THEY REPLACED THE ETM , SOFTWARE AND THROTTLE BODY AT THE COST OF $1195.43. ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER, I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED. THIS TIME THE DEALERSHIP SAID THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS TO THE ETM MUST BE BAD AND REPLACED SAME AT NO COST TO ME. NOW ABOUT 10 DAYS AFTER THAT REPAIR, THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME ON THE FREEWAY AGAIN. SINCE IT IS THE WEEKEND, I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL MONDAY FOR THE DEALER TO GIVE ME THE DIAGNOSIS THIS TIME. InJanuary 3, 2021, I received a recall for the front driver airbag but replacement parts were not available. OnApril 19, 2021I received a letter the parts were available were and for me to contact a Volvo dealer to replace the front driver's airbag.free of charge. I called Volvo Cars to let me know the dealers in Nashville. They recommended Volvo of Cool Springs. I finally got an appointment on November 16,, and had my car towed to this dealer. I picked it up on November 9, with a receipt the front driver airbag Module had been installed. Aftera few days I noticed my SRS was showing"airbag Service Urgent".I resetthe SRS but the message is still showing. I called Volvo Cars and they agreed to tow the car to Volvo of Coolsprings to check the airbag. I picked my car up the clerk tried to explain the problem was with a failed DIM control module/display. The charge would be over $2000. so the receipt showed "customer declined recommendations. My SRS was working fine until they supposedly replaced the airbag. My mechanic looked it over and the airbag is not connected. Volvo refused to pay another dealer to check the airbag. However, Volvo offered to tow my car to Volvo of Nashville on Murfreesboro road , not the orignal dealer. I refused unless they took care of the charges. I now have an a front driver airbag that is not connected. I would have to pay a dealer to find out if the airbag had been replaced. i have been driving without the recall airbag. I am filing this complaint in case of accident and to let you know the airbag recall has not been corrected. You can never talk to a mechanic at Volvo of Cool Springs. I called numerous times and left messages for the mechanic or manager to return my call.

2002 VOLVO S60. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO NHTSA SAFETY RECALL 21V-766. THE CONSUMER STATED THERE WERE NO VOLVO DEALERSHIPS WITHIN A REASONABLE DISTANCE TO PERFORM THE REPAIR. THE CONSUMER REQUESTED TO HAVE THE NECESSARY PARTS SENT TO A LOCAL AUTOMOTIVE SHOP.

I WAS INVOLVED IN A CAR ACCIDENT IN BRONX, NY ON 8/16/2017 THAT CAUSED SEVERE DAMAGE TO MY 2002 VOLVO S60. THANKFULLY, I WAS THE ONLY ONE IN MY CAR. I HAD JUST LEFT MY LAST DESTINATION, MOVING SLOWLY AND DRIVING STRAIGHT FOR A SHORT BLOCK OR SO, WHEN MY 2002 VOLVO S60, WITH AN ODOMETER READING OF 45,000 MILES, BEGAN TO ACCELERATE OUT OF NOWHERE AND RACE - ALL ON ITS OWN. I TRIED BRAKING (FOOT AND HAND) BUT IT WAS TOO SUDDEN AND NEITHER COULD SLOW IT DOWN. THE CAR ACCELERATED OUT OF MY CONTROL, JUMPED THE SIDEWALK AND PLOWED THROUGH A FENCE BEFORE COMING TO A STOP. I AM APPEALING FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE REGARDING THE CAR'S INCLUSION IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN 06V-441000. IN PARTICULAR, I HAVE A 2002 VOLVO S60 2.4T W/37,500 MILES. WHILE PULLING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT 2 MONTHS AGO, MY CAR'S ENGINE BEGAN SPUTTERED, AND WHEN I GOT ONTO A MAJOR ROADWAY, THE CAR SUDDENLY WENT INTO LIMP MODE, WHEREBY IT WENT 5 MPH MAXIMUM. *AK THE SUDDEN CHANGE IN SPEED ALMOST RESULTED IN MY CAR GETTING REAR-ENDED. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER, CHERRY HILL VOLVO IN NEW JERSEY, AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS PERTAINING TO THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE (ETM). THE DEALER SAID THAT THE ETM NEEDED TO BE CLEANED, AND THEY PROCEEDED TO CLEAN IT. A WEEK AGO, I FOUND OUT THAT NHTSA 06V-441 WAS ISSUED, WHICH ADDRESSES THIS EXACT PROBLEM. HOWEVER, I WAS TOLD BY VOLVO THAT MY CAR, SINCE IT'S A TURBO, WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE NHTSA LIST, BECAUSE THE ETM IS A DIFFERENT DESIGN. WHAT I'M SUGGESTING IS THAT THE ETM ON MY CAR HAS THE SAME PROBLEM AS THE OLD DESIGN ETM, AND THAT MY FAMILY COULD BE IN DANGER. FROM WHAT I'VE READ ON MESSAGE BOARDS, EVENTUALLY, I WILL NEED TO REPLACE THE ETM AT A COST OF $1100. VOLVO HAS WARRANTIED THE ETM ON MODELS OTHER THAN MINE, FOR 200,000 MILES OR 10 YEARS. UNFORTUNATELY, MY CALL WAS NOT RETURNED. I THEN CALLED HANK, CUSTOMER SATISFACTION MANAGER ON SATURDAY MORNING. AGAIN, HE WAS UNABLE TO ASSIST ME AND OF COURSE, I DID NOT RECEIVE A PHONE CALL BACK. I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE BASED ON THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE HOWEVER; I DO NOT FEEL SAFE. I WAS STOPPED AT STOP LIGHT WAITING TO TURN LEFT. UPON LIGHT TURNING GREEN, I ACCELERATED TO TURN LEFT. CAR, WITHOUT WARNING, LOST ACCELERATION, STEERING, AND BRAKING AS IF IN LIMP HOME MODE. I WAS ABLE TO PULL THE CAR OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I THEN PUT CAR IN PARK AND TURNED OFF ENGINE. CAR STARTED BACK UP AND DROVE WITHOUT INCIDENT. THERE WERE NO INDICATOR LIGHTS. TOOK CAR TO LOCAL GARAGE AND NO CODES CAME UP. THEN AGAIN ON MARCH 23, 2011 CAR AGAIN LOST ALL ACCELERATION AND STEERING. THIS TIME THE CAR WAS BEING DRIVEN APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH. NO WARNING INDICATORS WERE LIT. PUT CAR INTO PARK AND IT STARTED WITHOUT INCIDENT. TOOK CAR TO DEALER ON MARCH 25, 2011. THE DEALER SAID NO CODES CAME UP AND THEY WERE HAVING TROUBLE DIAGNOSING THE FAILURE. AFTER 4 DAYS THEY CALLED TO TELL ME IT COULD BE THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR AND THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE CLEANED (COST $660). HOWEVER, THEY COULD NOT SAY FOR SURE IF THIS WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. I AM GETTING THE SUGGESTED REPAIRS DONE. HOWEVER AFTER READING THE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS DESCRIBING THIS SAME FAILURE, I FEEL VERY UNEASY ABOUT DRIVING MY CAR. VOLVO NEEDS TO ADDRESS THESE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS AS THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN. I DRIVE MY CAR WITH TWO SMALL KIDS IN THE BACK SEAT EVERYDAY. I AM TERRIFIED THIS FAILURE WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. TWO MALFUNCTIONS EXIST WITH THE 2002 VOLVO S60. THE FIRST ONE IS A FAULTY DRIVER'S INFORMATION MODULE DEFECT THAT CAUSES A TOTAL MALFUNCTION OF THE ENTIRE DASHBOARD. SPECIFICALLY, THE DASHBOARD GOES COMPLETELY BLANK WHILE DRIVING AND ALL OF THE GAUGES BECOME INOPERABLE, INCLUDING THE SPEEDOMETER. THEREFORE, PREVENTING THE DRIVER FROM BEING ABLE TO CONTROL OR MONITOR THE VEHICLE'S SPEED. THE SECOND MALFUNCTION IS THE FRONT AND REAR HEATED 02 OXYGEN SENSORS. THESE MANUFACTURE DEFECTS HAVE A POTENTIAL TO CAUSE A VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENT. THE DRIVER'S INFORMATION MODULE AND THE 02 SENSORS WERE MANDATORY COMPONENTS THAT WERE REQUIRED TO BE REPLACED AS OPPOSED TO REPAIRED.

EVERYTIME I'VE TAKEN IT IN THE SHOP THEY SAY THERE ARE NO RECALLS - YET PLENTY OF COMPLAINTS OVER FIRES WITH SEATS. CAN'T USED HEATED SEATS AT ALL. ENGINE SEEMS TO REMAIN INCONSISTENT IN SPEED, DASHBOARD LIGHTS GO COMPLETELY OUT AND THE ELECTRICAL ISSUES AFFECT BACK BRAKE LIGHTS. WHILE DRIVING IN THE DARK, POWER TO THE ELECTRONICS LISTED BELOW WERE LOST INEVITABLY AND MANY WARNING LIGHTS/MESSAGES APPEARED ON THE DASH (ALSO LISTED BELOW UNDER SYMPTOMS). THERE WERE NO WARNING SIGNS THAT THIS WAS ABOUT TO HAPPEN NOR IS THERE ANY EXPLANATION FOR WHY IT HAPPENED. I WAS DRIVING ON A DARK ROAD AND I LOST COMPLETE VISION OF THE ROAD DUE TO HEADLIGHT FAILURE (BOTH LOW AND HIGH BEAMS). THIS SCENARIO IS A COMMON SAFETY ISSUE ASSOCIATED WITH MANY OTHER SIMILAR VOLVO YEARS AND MODELS. I HAD TO STOP THE CAR IMMEDIATELY TO AVOID CRASHING AND CALL SOMEONE TO PICK ME UP. ALL SYMPTOMS FROM THIS "BLACKOUT" DID NOT AND HAVE NOT DISAPPEARED SINCE IT HAPPENED, MAKING THE CAR UNDRIVABLE. THESE SYMPTOMS ARE SUSPECT TO BE THE RESULT OF A CEM FAILURE, WHICH ALSO CONTROLS EMISSIONS. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. THERE WAS FULL BATTERY POWER AND THE COMPUTER STATED IT WAS THE IMMOBILIZER CHECK MANUAL. THERE WERE FOUR OCCUPANTS IN THE VEHICLE. AS WE WERE DRIVING HOME FROM THE MALL, WE NOTICED A BRIEF INTERRUPTION IN THE LIGHTS AND RADIO. A FEW MILES DOWN THE ROAD, THERE WAS AN ELECTRICAL FAILURE AND THE CAR SHUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, BUT WE WERE ABLE TO GET IT CRANKED BACK UP IN LESS THAN A MINUTE. WE DROVE APPROXIMATELY TWO MORE MILES AND PULLED INTO OUR DRIVEWAY AND SHUT THE CAR OFF. WE HEARD A SOUND LIKE AN ALARM, BUT IT WAS SO FAINT; BEFORE WE HAD TIME TO THINK ABOUT IT FURTHER, THE CAB BEGAN TO FILL WITH BLACKISH GREY SMOKE INTO THE BACKSEAT AREA. WE ALL GOT OUT QUICKLY AND WALKED TO THE BACK OF THE CAR. I NOTICED FLAMES BEHIND THE DRIVER SIDE TAIL LIGHT (WHERE THE BATTERY IS LOCATED) AND TOLD MY HUSBAND. HE OPENED THE TRUNK (BURNING HIS FINGERTIPS), AND FLAMES SHOT UP INTO THE AIR. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED 911 BECAUSE THE FLAMES WERE HIGH AND FAST-MOVING. THE 911 DISPATCHER INSTRUCTED US TO STAY AWAY FROM THE CAR AND NOT TRY TO PUT THE FIRE OUT DUE TO THE OBVIOUS DANGERS OF A FAST-MOVING CAR FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED WITHIN FIVE MINUTES AND BEGAN PUTTING THE FIRE OUT; HOWEVER, THE CAR WAS A TOTAL LOSS UP TO THE ENGINE, WHICH WAS NOT BURNED. AFTER INSPECTION, THE FIRE DEPARTMENT DEEMED IT A LOSS DUE TO AN ELECTRICAL FIRE. I HAVE CONTACTED VOLVO, BUT THEY HAVE NOT RESPONDED TO ME AS OF YET. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL RECALLS ON THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE, AND WE ARE WORRIED THAT VOLVO MAY HAVE MISSED ONE. FOR THE SAFETY OF OTHERS, I AM REPORTING THIS SAFETY HAZARD. THE CAR REMAINS IN OUR DRIVEWAY AWAITING INSURANCE ADJUSTMENT; HOWEVER, I AM HOPEFUL THAT EITHER VOLVO OR SOMEONE WHO DOES SAFETY INSPECTIONS WOULD CLAIM THE CAR TO INVESTIGATE THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE FURTHER. *TR

PURCHASED USED S60 IN NOVEMBER 2011 WITH 137,000 MILES. A FEW WEEKS LATER VARIOUS PROBLEMS MANIFESTED: SCRAMBLED LETTERS IN DASHBOARD MESSAGE, DRIVER DOOR LOCKS INTERMITTENTLY WORKED, RADIO SELF TUNED TO DIFFERENT STATION, SPEEDOMETER GIVING FALSE READINGS OR STUCK AT CURRENT SPEED OR READING ZERO, FUEL GAUGE MALFUNCTION, ALL INSTRUMENTS ON PANEL FLICKERED, ALL INSTRUMENTS WENT "DARK" WHILE DRIVING. AT FIRST RESTARTING CAR WOULD CLEAR PROBLEM. THEN FREQUENCY BETWEEN FAILURES INCREASED. JUST BEFORE COMPLETE FAILURE - CAR NEEDED TO BE "COLD" FOR INSTRUMENTS TO WORK - WITH INSTRUMENTS FAILING ONCE ENGINE WARMED. FINALLY IN FEBRUARY 2012 AT ABOUT 147,021 MILES THE PANEL COMPLETELY FAILED WHILE DRIVING - GIVING DRIVER NO READINGS (SPEED, FUEL, TEMP, MILEAGE, OR WARNING INDICATORS) AND WOULD NOT RESET. INTERNET FORUMS OF VOLVO OWNERS SUGGESTED IT WAS A DRIVER INFORMATION MODULE FAILURE. OWNERS FORUMS PINPOINTED 3 PROBABLE CAUSES OF A DIM FAILURE - 1. LOOSE CONNECTION OF THE MOTOROLA MICROCHIP, 2. LOOSE CAPACITOR/RESISTOR 3. LACK OF PROTECTION FROM HEAT/HEAT TRANSFER TO INDIVIDUAL PRONGS IN MICROCHIP OR BETWEEN CAPACITOR/RESISTOR AND THE CIRCUIT BOARD. SOME ELECTRICALLY SAVVY OWNERS FIXED BY REFLOWING/RESOLDERING/HEAT PROTECTING SAID COMPONENTS. OUR LOCAL VOLVO DEALER CONFIRMED DIM FAILURE AND QUOTED APROX. $1500 FOR A NEW INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND 3 HRS. LABOR. MY TWO-YEAR-OLD SON RIDES REAR-FACING IN HIS SUNSHINE KIDS RADIAN XTSL, INSTALLED WITH SUPERLATCH AND THE REAR-FACING TETHER. I AM A CERTIFIED CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY TECHNICIAN, SO I KNOW THE INSTALLATION WAS CORRECT. WHEN MY SON PLACES HIS FOOT ON THE TILT LOCK MECHANISM OF THE SUPERLATCH, IT SIGNIFICANTLY LOOSENS IT. IT LOOSENS IT SO MUCH THAT THE CHILD RESTRAINT MOVES MORE THAN 1" FROM SIDE-TO-SIDE AND FRONT/BACK. HE DID THIS WHILE WE WERE DRIVING. WHEN I HAD INITIALLY PLACED HIM IN HIS CHILD RESTRAINT, THERE WAS A TIGHT INSTALLATION (I ALWAYS CHECK), BUT WHEN WE ARRIVED AT OUR DESTINATION, IT WAS VERY LOOSE WHEN I TOOK HIM OUT. THAT'S WHEN I NOTICED THAT HOW HE PUTS HIS FOOT ON THE TILT LOCK MECHANISM. IF WE HAD BEEN IN A MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION DURING THIS TIME, THERE IS A GREAT CHANCE THAT HE COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED OR DIED. I IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED SUNSHINE KIDS VIA EMAIL. THEIR REPRESENTATIVE WAS QUICK TO RESPOND TO ME AND THEY SENT ME A REPLACEMENT SUPERLATCH. I HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE NEW SUPERLATCH. THE REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME THAT THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL REPORTS MADE ABOUT THIS ISSUE, BUT THAT SUNSHINE KIDS HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO "REPLICATE THIS ISSUE" IN THEIR "EXTENSIVE TESTING." SHE SAID THAT THE NEW RADIANS MADE AFTER FEBRUARY 2011 ARE EQUIPPED WITH THE NEW UPDATED SUPERLATCH. THEY HAVE ADDED A RETAINER CLIP TO ALL TILT LOCK MECHANISMS ON THE SUPERLATCH WHICH CHANGES THE RELEASE ANGLE AND PREVENTS ANY LOOSENING. THEY ALSO OFFER THE UPDATED TILT LOCK MECHANISM TO ANY CUSTOMER WHO HAS A CONCERN ABOUT THEIR SUPERLATCH. I FEEL THAT THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL, BECAUSE THERE MAY BE MANY CUSTOMERS WHO ARE UNAWARE OF THIS DEFECT. EVEN IF THE INSTALLATION IS CORRECT WHEN YOU PLACE YOUR CHILD IN THE CHILD RESTRAINT, THE LOOSENING CAN OCCUR, UNKNOWINGLY, WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING AND POSES SERIOUS RISK TO PASSENGERS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 90,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 98,000.

I WAS STUCK IN HIGH WAY TRAFFIC FOR ABOUT 45 MINUTES, ONCE THE TRAFFIC CLEARED I TRIED TO ACCELERATE BUT COULD NOT, I WAS AFRAID I WAS GOING TO GET HIT BECAUSE I COULD NOT GET MY VEHICLE UP TO A SAFE SPEED (THE VEHICLE WENT INTO LIMP MODE). I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO AT LEAST 50 MPH TO GET IT HOME. THIS NOW HAPPENS WITHIN APPROX 1-2 MILES OF DRIVING. DUE TO THE HI COST OF REPAIRS FOR THIS VEHICLE I HAD THE DIAGNOSTICS DONE FIRST (COST $90.00), THE RESULT WAS A BAD MASS-AIR SENSOR AND FAULTY THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR. I HAD THE MASS-AIR SENSOR REPLACED AT A COST OF $140.00, I THEN HAD THE THROTTLE POSITIONING SENSOR CLEANED ( THIS IS WHAT THE DEALERSHIP WILL DO FIRST, BECAUSE OF THE HI COST INVOLVED IN REPLACING THE THROTTLE BODY & PROGRAMMING IT) AT A COST OF $180.00. I PURCHASED A 2002 S-60 AWD IN THE FALL OF 2002, LESS THAN 90 DAYS LATER I DEVELOPED A VIBRATION. THE DEALER COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. I TOOK IT TO A REPUTABLE TIRE DEALER AND HAD AN ALIGNMENT AS WELL AS THE PIRELLI TIRES BALANCED. I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE ALIGNED TWICE SINCE PURCHASE. I HAVE HAD THE TIRES BALANCED APPROX. 10 TIMES. I HAVE HAD TWO BLOW-OUTS, DESTROYING ONE WHEEL. BOTH BLOW-OUTS REQUIRED A NEW TIRE. DURING ALL OF THIS THE VIBRATION COULD NOT BE CORRECTED BY EITHER THE LOCAL TIRE COMPANY NOR THE DEALER. I WAS INSTRUCTED TO PURCHASE NEW TIRES AS ONE OF THE PIRELLIS HAD SIDEWALL SEPARATION AND ONE HAD A BUBBLE, THE OTHER TWO TIRES WERE RELATIVELY NEW AS I HAD TO PURCHASE THEM AFTER THE BLOW-OUTS, MY VEHICLE HAD LESS THAN 20,000 MILES. I REPLACED THE PIRELLI TIRES WITH TOP OF THE LINE NOKIANS, THE VIBRATION WAS STILL THERE. I WAS THEN TOLD MY PROBLEM WAS THE NEW TIRES!! I HAVE A 2002 VOLVO S60 AWD WITH PIRELLI P6 TIRES. BACK IN JANUARY I HAD A BLOWOUT AFTER HITTING A BUMP IN THE ROAD. NOW THE 3 REMAINING TIRES HAVE DEVELOPED LARGE BUBBLES IN THE SIDEWALLS. ALL 4 OF MY RIMS ARE BENT. I HAVE COMPLAINED TO VOLVO AND PIRELLI TIRE. THEY BLAME THE ROAD CONDITIONS IN THE NORTHEAST. THEY OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. I HAVE FOUND OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME COMPLAINT. OVER THE WEEKEND ANOTHER TIRE WENT FLAT AS ONE OF THE BUBBLES RUPTURED. AS THE CAR IS NOT DRIVABLE, IT SITS IN MY DRIVEWAY AS I CAN'T GET ANYWHERE WITH VOLVO. *NLM
