INSTRUMENT PANEL/CLUSTER GOES OUT WHILE DRIVING WHICH MEANS YOU CAN'T READ ANY OF THE GUAGES OR WARNINGS LIGHTS OTHER THAN IF CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. THIS IMPOSES A SAFETY RISKS TO ME AND OTHER TRAFFIC ON THE ROAD. IT DOES THIS ERRATICALLY, GOING OUT COMPLETELY AND COMING BACK ON IN TIME. NO FUSE PROBLEMS, THEY ARE CHECKED WHEN THIS ISSUE HAPPENS. I HAVE A PICTURE OF EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENS RIGHT BEFORE THE WHOLE PANEL GOES OUT.

THE DASHBOARD INSTRUMENT PANEL AND LIGHTS GO OFF AND COME BACK ON WHENEVER. I HAVE HAD THE CAR FOR OVER A YEAR. IT WAS A GIFT. I JUST FOUND OUT TONITE FROM AN OFFICER THAT WHEN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND LIGHTS ARE OFF I HAVE NO TAIL LIGHTS. I WAS WONDERING IF THERE HAS EVER BEEN A RECALL. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS THE DATE BELOW IS IT AN APPROXIMATE. I REALLY DO NOT REMEMBER THE EXACT DATE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 VOLVO S60. WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL INDICATOR INTERMITTENTLY ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT A CABLE BEHIND THE MILEAGE GAUGE FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 179,000.

WHILE DRIVING ON I-290 THE ENGINE OF MY 2003 VOLVO S60 SUDDENLY LOST ALL POWER. I NARROWLY ESCAPED SEVERAL SERIOUS ACCIDENTS ON A BUSY CHICAGO HIGHWAY. WHEN THE CAR LOSES POWER THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING THE OPERATOR CAN DO TO MOVE OVER TO THE SIDE. I WAS DRIVING APPROX. 60 MPH WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY STALLED, AND I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AFTER APPROX. 30-60 SECONDS. THE PROBLEMS EXHIBITED BY THE CAR ARE EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE RECENT RECALL THAT VOLVO HAS ANNOUNCED FOR VOLVO VEHICLES. MY CAR IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL. I HAD A SIMILAR ISSUE ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO AND REPLACED THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. JUST TODAY (9/25/10), MY 2003 VOLVO S60 BEGAN TO IRREGULARLY STALL WHILE DRIVING. WHILE I'M SLOWING DOWN, IT DOWNSHIFTS BY IT SELF, AND JUST DIES, AND WHILE I'M SLOWING DOWN, THE WARNING INDICATORS ON THE DASH ARE NOT LIT, AS IF NOTHING IS WRONG, BUT WHEN COME TO A COMPLETE STOP ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH ARE LIT. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT THEN COMES ON, IT WASN'T ON BEFORE THIS HAPPENED. THIS CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS WHEN YOU ARE SLOWING DOWN TO TURN AT AN INTERSECTION. I HAVE A 2003 S60 VOLVO. WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH THE CAR WOULD GO INTO LIMP MODE AND THE SPEED WOULD QUICKLY DROP TO 10 MPH AND THE MESSAGE REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE WOULD BE DISPLAYED. THE CAR WILL NOT ACCELERATE PAST THAT SPEED. THIS IS VERY SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE THE QUICK DROP IN SPEED MAY LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE A 2003 VOLVO S 60 THAT HAS BEGUN STALLING OUT WHILE DRIVING. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS SIMILAR TO OTHER CAR PROBLEMS THAT HAVE BEEN REPORTED RECENTLY. 1. THERE IS A WHOOPING CRANE SOUND WHEN I STEP ON THE FOOT FEED AND THEN RELEASE. THE DEALER SAID IT WAS REPAIRED AND THEN WHEN I DROVE IT HOME IT WAS STILL MAKING THE NOISE. AFTER NO RESPONSE FROM MY COMPLAINT TO THEM I STOPPED THE PAYMENT VIA AE AND HAVE STILL HEARD NOTHING. I THINK I PUT THE WRONG YEAR OF MY VEHICLE IN THE BEGINNING AND IF I TRY TO GO BACK I LOOSE EVERYTHING. IT IS A 2003 XC90 PURCHASED IN 12/02. THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE. I TOOK POSSESSION OF THE CAR IN 12/02 SO MY MATH SAYS THE WARRANTY EXPIRED 12/06 AND THAT MEANS IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY WHEN THIS WAS FIRST NOTICED. I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE IN AT LEAST EVERY 4 MONTHS FOR SERVICE AND EACH TIME COMPLAINED ABOUT IT. ALSO I HAD IT IN AT LEAST 5 TIMES FROM JUNE THRU JULY 2007 WITH NO SATISFACTION. THE TRANSMISSION OF MY S60 INADVERTENTLY MIS-SHIFTS AT A VARIETY OF SPEEDS. FUEL LEAKING FROM TANK (MOST LIKELY TOP OF TANK), WHEN FUEL PUMP IS OPERATING. UPON SOME SEARCH, I FOUND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM FOR THE S60 FROM 2001 TO 2009. BUT FOR SOME REASON MY VIN IS NOT COVERED. SEEMS LIKE THERE'S SOME LOOPHOLE THAT THEY MANAGED TO USE, WHY NOT ALL VINS SHOULD BE COVERED. ITS CLEARLY A VERY DANGEROUS FAILURE.

SOME MODELS HAD A RECALL NOTICE FOR A CRACKED LEAKING FUEL PUMP (PE09039). THIS EXACT THING HAPPENED TO OUR CAR. VOLVO REFUSES TO COVER THE VEHICLE UNDER THE RECALL BECAUSE IT WAS NOT SOLD IN ONE OF THE STATES LISTED. THE PROBLEM IS EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL. COMPLIANT 1: I HAVE A 2003 S60 VOLVO. THE INSTRUMENT PANEL GOES DARK AND ALL INSTRUMENTS STOP WORKING. THIS INCLUDES ALL GAUGES, SPEEDOMETER, RPM, FUEL, TEMP AND BLINKERS. THEY ALL GO TO ZERO AND PANEL TURNS BLACK AND COMPLETELY OFF. THE EXTERIOR BLINKERS DO STILL WORK. WHEN THE PANEL IS WORKING I RECEIVE VARIOUS MESSAGES SUCH AS SRS AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT, BRAKE FAILURE, AND STOP IMMEDIATELY NO OIL PRESSURE. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC AND HE SAID IT'S THE DRIVER INFORMATION MODULE WHICH COSTS $1300 TO REPLACE. MY MECHANIC ALSO STATED THAT THIS IS A REOCCURING PROBLEM IN THIS CAR. I HAVE DONE RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND HAVE FOUND THAT THERE ARE MANY VOLVO'S OF THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL IN WHICH THE SAME EXACT PROBLEMS ARE OCCURING. I FEEL THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FIXING THIS PROBLEM. IT'S OBVIOUS THAT IT'S A RECURRING PROBLEM. COMPLIANT 2: I'M ALSO EXPERIENCING AN ENGINE STALL PROBLEM. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. THE CAR WILL STALL AT LEAST 50% OF THE TIME WHEN MAKING A TURN. I'VE RESEARCHED THIS AS WELL AND FOUND THAT IT'S A REOCCURRING PROBLEM AS WELL. APPARENTLY THE FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR LOCATED ON THE LEFT END OF THE FUEL RAIL MAY, AT TIMES, TRANSMIT AN INCORRECT SIGNAL REGARDING THE FUEL PRESSURE TO THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE. THIS CAUSES ENGINE MISFIRES AND CAUSES THE ENGINE TO SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY WHEN IN MIDDLE OF INTERSECTIONS. I HAVE COME CLOSE TO MANY DANGEROUS SITUATIONS BECAUSE OF THIS ENGINE FAILURE.

MY WIFE, JANELLE, AND I HAVE A 2003 VOLVO S60 WHICH WE PURCHASED NEW IN APRIL, 2003, AND WHICH HAD FOUR ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MICHELIN TIRES (MXV-4, I BELIEVE). WE USE IT FOR NORMAL HIGHWAY AND SUBURBAN TRAVEL IN THE BOSTON AREA. WHEN THE CAR HAD GONE ONLY 8000 MILES, ONE OF THE LEFT TIRES GAVE OUT ON US. THE SIDE WALL OF THE TIRE UNRAVELED, AND THE TIRE COULD NOT BE REPAIRED. NO SPECIFIC CAUSE COULD BE DETERMINED. FORTUNATELY, THIS HAPPENED IN A QUIET CAPE COD TOWN AND WE WERE NOT IN ANY DANGER (BUT I WAS OUT ABOUT $150). WE HAD NO FURTHER PROBLEMS UNTIL SEPTEMBER 13, WHEN THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE GAVE OUT FROM THE SIDE IN THE SAME MANNER AS THE PREVIOUS TIRE ON ROUTE 128 IN WAKEFIELD, MA (AT 23000 MILES), WHILE I WAS TRAVELING MORE THAN 60 MILES AN HOUR IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. WE WERE LUCKY NOT TO HAVE BEEN KILLED OR INJURED. AGAIN, THE TIRE WAS RUINED. AGAIN, IT COST ME OVER $150 FOR A REPLACEMENT TIRE. BOTH TIRE DEALERS WHO SOLD US REPLACEMENT MICHELIN MATCHING TIRES ADVISED US THAT PERHAPS THE PROBLEM HAD TO DO WITH THE "LOW PROFILE" OF THE VOLVO S60 AND BUMPING INTO CURBS. YET THE FIRST TIRE WHICH UNRAVELED WAS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND THE SECOND TIRE WHICH UNRAVELED HAD ABSOLUTELY NO CONTACT WITH A CURB FOR ABOUT 100 MILES PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THIS SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED. I BELIEVE THAT THE ORIGINAL TIRES WERE DEFECTIVE, AND WE ARE NOW AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR AT ALL, EVEN THOUGH WE ARE PLANNING LONG TRIPS IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS. I RECENTLY LEASED A VOLVO S60 WITH PIRELLI P6 235/45R17 TIRES. THE VEHICLE HAS 2900 MILES ON IT AND I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THREE (3) OF THE TIRES. I AM TOLD IT IS DUE TO ROAD CONDITIONS, SUCH AS POTHOLES, ETC. THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO ANY OF MY RIMS; THEREFORE, I OBVIOUSLY DID NOT HIT ANYTHING THAT HARD. THE TURN SIGNAL LEVER BROKE WITHOUT MUCH FORCE BEING PLACED ON IT. THE PLASTIC USED TO CONSTRUCT IT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN OF GOOD QUALITY. I AM SURPRISED THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL ISSUED FOR CERTAIN MODEL YEAR VOLVOS RELATIVE TO THE CENTER DASH MODULE LOSING ALL COMMUNICATION APPARENTLY DUE TO FAILED SOLDER CONNECTIONS (BASED ON CHAT-ROOMS, VOLVO SPECIFIC). I UNDERSTAND COMPONENTS CAN FAIL, BUT THE SHEER NUMBER OF FAILURES AND THE FAILURE MODE IS BEYOND TYPICAL OR EXPECTED FAILURES. I AM THE OWNER OF A 2003 VOLVO S60, THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN A HEADACHE FOR SOME TIME NOW. THE FIRST ISSUE STARTED WITH THE HEADLIGHTS BLOWING OUT. OF COURSE WHEN THE CAR IS HOOKED UP TO A DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE THERE ARE NO ERROR CODES AND SINCE THIS ISSUE HAPPENS WITHOUT WARNING IT NEVER HAPPENS WHEN A SERVICE TECH IS WITH ME. LASTLY, TWO DAYS AGO I STARTED MY VEHICLE AND THE ENTIRE DASH COMPLETELY BLACKED OUT. NONE OF THE GAUGES ARE OPERABLE. I CANNOT SEE WHETHER I HAVE FUEL OR NOT IN IT. AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE, THE VEHICLE WAS UNDER THE WARRANTY OF 50,000 MILES AND WAS SERVICED FOR WARRANTY ITEMS BY RICKENBAUGH VOLVO. THE VEHICLE CURRENTLY HAS 60,500 MILES. UPON USING THE SEAT WARMERS FOR THE FIRST TIME DECEMBER 27, 2006, A SMALL HOLE BURNED IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT FROM THE SEAT HEATING ELEMENT. SMOKE WAS COMING OUT OF THE HOLE WHEN I DISCOVERED THE ISSUE AND I IMMEDIATELY TURNED OFF THE SEAT WARMER. I TOOK THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY (DECEMBER 27, 2006) TO VOLVO PARTS, INC. FOR INSPECTION. THERE IS A SHORT IN THE HEATING ELEMENT THAT MAKES THIS VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I CALLED THE VOLVO CORPORATION CUSTOMER SERVICE THAT SAME DAY AND WAS TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT BE REPAIRED BY THE VOLVO CORPORATION BECAUSE IT WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. I PHONED RICKENBAUGH VOLVO THAT SAME DAY AND WAS TOLD THE HEATING ELEMENT AND PAD WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF APPROXIMATELY $630.00. I AM CONCERNED THAT THE HEATING ELEMENT WAS IMPROPERLY INSTALLED CAUSING A SHORT, OR THE ELEMENT IS DEFECTIVE. THE DEALER SAID A PLASTIC PART HAD BROKEN INSIDE THE DOOR PANEL AND TO CORRECTLY FIX, IT WOULD BE $845 AND THAT THE ENTIRE DOOR PANEL WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THEY THEN SAID THAT IF WE WANTED TO ACCEPT THE RISK, THEY COULD GO IN AND GLUE THE PIECE AND TIE IT FOR $162. VOLVO SAID THEY WOULDN'T BE RESPONSIBLE ALTHOUGH THE PART FAILURE TRAPS A PERSON IN THE CAR NOT ALLOWING THE PASSENGER TO OPEN THEIR DOOR FROM WITHIN. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE STALLS WITHOUT WARNING. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE AND PROVIDE A REMEDY. WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE A LOUD "BANG" WAS HEARD FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE CAUSING A MOMENTARY MOVING DISTURBANCE (SHIMMY). UPON STOPPING THE VEHICLE TO INSPECT, I NOTICED THERE WAS NO LONGER ANY TENSION ON THE PARKING BRAKE. CONTINUING TO DRIVE INDICATED THAT THE BRAKE WAS SEIZED ON ONE WHEEL AND LOOSE/RATTLING PARTS FROM SOMEWHERE NEAR THE REAR WHEEL. FURTHER INVESTIGATION HAS SO FAR REVEALED THAT THIS MAY NOT BE AN UNCOMMON PROBLEM FOR S60 VOLVOS WITH REPEATED COMPLAINTS APPEARING ON ENTHUSIASTS SITES INCLUDING INCIDENTS OF BOTH REAR WHEELS SEIZING WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN OPERATION. CONSULTATION WITH THE TWO NEAREST VOLVO DEALERSHIPS INDICATES NO ACKNOWLEDGMENT FROM VOLVO OF THE DEFECT. IT APPEARS THE PROBLEM MAY BE WITH THE INTERNAL PARTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE RETURN MECHANISMS IN THE PARKING BRAKE ASSEMBLY. ON 12 DEC, 2008, MY 2003 VOLVO S60 STALLED WITH NO WARNING WHILE TRAVELING ON A BUSY HIGHWAY AT 60 MPH. I PULLED TO SAFETY (VEHICLE WAS IN "LIMP HOME" MODE) AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP (PARK PLACE VOLVO). SINCE THE VEHICLE STARTED RIGHT BACK UP AND PRESENTED NO CODES, I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG AND GIVEN A BILL FOR $418 (FOR TOW AND DIAGNOSTIC CHECK). APPROX. 1 MONTH LATER, VEHICLE PRESENTED SAME PROBLEM; IT STALLED, WITHOUT WARNING, WHILE DRIVING... CREATING A GREAT SAFETY RISK FOR THE SECOND TIME. THE OEM JACK THAT CAME WITH MY VOLVO FAILED MISERABLY WHEN I HAD A FLAT TIRE. THE JACK WAS NEVER USED BEFORE THIS INCIDENT. WHILE THE JACK WAS PLACED ON A LEVEL SURFACE AND WAS COMPLETELY VERTICAL, THE FORCE NECESSARY TO SPIN THE JACK HANDLE CAUSED THE JACK TO VERY SLOWLY SLIDE SIDEWAYS IN AN INCREASINGLY PRECARIOUS POSITION. I STOPPED AND STARTED OVER SEVERAL TIMES ONLY TO RENDER THE SAME RESULT. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS, I WAS ABLE RAISE THE CAR HIGH ENOUGH TO ATTEMPT REMOVAL OF THE FLAT TIRE. THE JACK HOWEVER WAS VERY UNSTABLE. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE THE TIRE, THE JACK FAILED AND THE CAR FELL TO THE GROUND. LUCKILY, THE FLAT TIRE WAS STILL ON THE CAR. SINCE I WAS IN MY PAVED DRIVEWAY, I WAS ABLE TO USE ANOTHER JACK. SINCE IT WASN'T A VOLVO JACK, I WAS ABLE TO USE WOODEN BLOCKS TO CRIB OR SECURE THE CAR BY STACKING WOOD UNDER THE CAR AS THE JACK RAISED THE CAR SO IT WOULDN'T FALL OFF THE JACK. THE VOLVO JACK IS BENT AND UNSAFE TO USE AGAIN, EVEN THOUGH IT WASN'T SAFE TO USE THE FIRST TIME. THE GRIEF FROM THIS CAR LITERALLY BEGAN ON THE WAY HOME FROM THE SHOW ROOM, AS THE SEAT BELTS WERE NOT FUNCTIONING. THEY REQUIRED FOUR VISITS TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THE ISSUE OF THE TIRES BEING UNSAFE BECAME APPARENT WHEN THE CAR WAS TWO WEEKS OLD, WITH UNDER 1000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER FRONT & REAR BUMPERS SEPARATE FROM VEHICLE , WITH LITTLE OR NO PROVOCATION. TIRES SELF DESTRUCT AT SPEEDS OF 2-4 MPH (WHILE PARKING), IF A CURB IS TOUCHED. I'M INFORMED THAT TIRES HAVE WEAK SIDEWALLS & TO REPLACE TIRES (AT MY EXPENSE).
