The contact owns a 2000 Volvo S80. The contact stated that while at a complete stop, the vehicle intermittently hesitated in responding while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated during the failure. The contact called the dealer and the manufacturer and was informed that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 06V441000 (Vehicle Speed Control) which he linked to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

THE CAR THROTTLE IS FAULTY. MY CAR REVS TO HIGH RPM WHEN IDLE AND AT LOW SPEEDS. IT ALSO IS IN LIMP MODE. WHEN THIS PROBLEM WAS FOUND AND RECALLED IN 2006 I BROUGHT THE CAR IN FOR THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE, BUT THE CAR IS STILL TRYING TO LUNGE FORWARD AT LOW SPEEDS AND REVVING IN IDLE. I WAS TOLD BY VOLVO CUSTOMER CARE THERE WAS NOTHING THEY WILL DO FOR THE PROBLEM SINCE THE SOFTWARE HAD BEEN UPGRADED EVEN THOUGH THE THROTTLE IS FAULTY. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 VOLVO S80. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 70 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE INDEPENDENTLY DECELERATED TO 20 MPH AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESPOND TO ACCELERATION ATTEMPTS. THE VEHICLE WAS SHUT OFF AND RESTARTED BUT THE FAILURE WAS STILL PRESENT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE PROBABLY NEEDED A NEW COMPUTER BUT THE MECHANIC WAS NOT POSITIVE THAT THE REPAIR WOULD CORRECT OR WAS CAUSING THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT THEN CALLED THE MANUFACTURER IN REFERENCE TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 06V441000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL) BUT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN REPAIRED ACCORDING TO THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 166,000 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 162,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 VOLVO S80. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS AT A STOP, THE RPMS FLUCTUATED UP AND DOWN. THE CONTACT ALSO NOTICED THAT WHEN HE DID NOT HAVE THE BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED TO THE FLOORBOARD, THE VEHICLE WOULD SUDDENLY SURGE FORWARD. HE EXPERIENCED THE FAILURE WITH WHAT HE ASSUMED TO BE THE TRANSMISSION FOR A YEAR BEFORE TAKING IT TO THE DEALERSHIP . THE AUTHORIZED DEALER WAS INFORMED ABOUT THE FAILURE BUT THE CONTACT WAS TOLD THAT THE REPAIR COSTS WOULD BE AT HIS EXPENSE. HE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS INFORMED THAT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY, HE WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIR COSTS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO CLEANED THE THROTTLE BODY. THE CONTACT NOTICED NO PROBLEMS UNTIL RECENTLY. HOWEVER, THE CONTACT BEGAN EXPERIENCING THE SAME FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 80,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 125,000. UPON RESTART THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE DRIVING BUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WOULD ALSO WOULD NOT RESPOND WHEN PRESSURE WAS APPLIED TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE FAILURES OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY UNTIL THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT LONGER START AT ALL. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 VOLVO S80. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE WAS A BENEFICIARY OF A CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT REGARDING A DEFECTIVE THROTTLE MODULE IN THE ENGINE. THE VOLVO DEALER WOULD NOT REPAIR THE FAILURE DUE TO THE WARRANTY LAWSUIT. THE LAWSUIT WILL EXPIRE WHENEVER THE VEHICLE BECOMES TEN YEARS OLD OR REACHES 200,000 MILES. THE FAILURE CAUSES THE ENGINE TO SURGE FROM FAST TO SLOW OR VICE VERSA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS NO DEALER NEARBY TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, BUT THEY STATED THAT THE COMPUTER WOULD NOT DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A REPAIR SHOP AND THEY DETERMINED THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 108,000.

THE ENGINE LIGHT WOULD ILLUMINATE SIMULTANEOUSLY. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD, TURBO BACK FIELD, AND TORQUE MOUNT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AS WELL AS PERFORM A TC-B SERVICE ALL AT THE COST OF OVER $3,320. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 VOLVO S80. WHENEVER THE VEHICLE IS AT A STOP, IT WILL SURGE FORWARD UNLESS THE CONTACT APPLIES A GREAT AMOUNT OF PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. ALSO, WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, THE ENGINE WILL SUDDENLY STALL AND SHUT OFF. THE VEHICLE IS ABLE TO BE RESTARTED IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES, BUT THE FAILURE STILL PERSISTS. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 50,300 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 44,000.

ON APRIL 21,2011 APPROXIMATELY 7:45AM, MY VEHICLE FAILED IN ACCELERATING POWER SUDDENLY WHILE DRIVING. IN ADDITION, MY VEHICLE JERK, SKIP, AND SHOOK UNCONTROLLABLY. I HAD MY CAR TOWED TO MY PERSONAL REPAIR SHOP (REPUTABLE VOLVO SERVICE, INC.) MY MECHANIC INFORMED ME AFTER A DIAGNOSTIC, THAT THE THROTTLE MODULE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. HE TELLS ME THAT ONLY THE VOLVO DEALER WOULD BE THE ONLY REPAIR SERVICE TO REPLACE THIS PART DUE TO THE SOFTWARE PROGRAM THAT INCLUDED. SO, ONCE AGAIN, THE CAR WAS TOWED THE AUTHORIZE VOLVO DEALER. THE DIAGNOSTIC HERE IS THE SAME, THE THROTTLE MODULE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS PART, ALONG WITH OTHER PARTS. I WAS NOT INFORMED ABOUT THIS THROUGH THE DEALER BUT THROUGH RESEARCH OF MY OWN. THE SERVICE MANAGER TELLS ME THAT I WOULD HAVE TO CONTACT VOLVO MANUFACTURER TO SEE RATHER THEY WOULD HONOR THE RECALL OF THE REPLACEMENT OF THIS PART. I CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER AND SPOKE WITH MRS. MARILYN AND MRS. JAN AND I WAS TOLD THAT THIS PART WAS PAST THE WARRANTY BUT THEY WOULD HONOR THE SOFTWARE UPDATE FOR THIS PART. ALSO THE ENGINE COOLING FAN RECALL IS STILL OPEN BUT I HAVE ALREADY HAD THIS PART AND LABOR DONE AT MY OWN EXPENSE DUE TO THE FACT THAT I WAS NOT AWARE OF THE RECALLS. THE THROTTLE MODULE IS ABOUT $700.00, THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE LABOR OR ANOTHER SOFTWARE PROGRAM. FOR MY TOTAL REPAIR COST IS $1185.00 AND STRONGLY FEEL THAT THIS IS NOT FAIR BECAUSE NONE OF MY PARTS WERE REPLACED THROUGH THE RECALL. IN OTHER WORDS I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY FOR A PART PLUS LABOR THAT WAS DEFECTIVE IN PRODUCTION. I SHOULD BE EXTENDED THE SAME RECALL CONDITIONS THAT OTHER VOLVO OWNERS WERE ABLE TO RECEIVED. VOLVO INC KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT CARS RECEIVED THEIR RECALL PARTS REPLACEMENT AND ALSO WHICH CARS DID NOT THROUGH THEIR VIN NUMBER. OF COURSE THEY WOULD EXTEND THE SOFTWARE UPDATE PROGRAM BECAUSE IT'S LESS EXPENSIVE. PLEASE ASSIST ME. THANKS

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 VOLVO S80. WHEN THE CONTACT ARRIVED HOME, SHE NOTICED SMOKE UNDER THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE. FLAMES WERE PRESENT SOON AFTER. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. EVERYTHING UNDER THE HOOD WAS MELTED. A FIREFIGHTER STATED THAT IT APPEARED TO BE AN ELECTRICAL FIRE. A REPORT WAS FILED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE WILL CALL VOLVO AND FILE A CLAIM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 125,300.

AS I UNDERSTAND IT, THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE (ETM) ON MY 2000 VOLVO S80 IS IN THE PROCESS OF FAILING. TWO YEARS AGO, I HAD MY VEHICLE SERVICED WHEN IT BEGAN SURGING FORWARD WHEN IDLING, EVEN WHEN I WAS BRAKING. AN ETM SOFTWARE UPGRADE WAS DONE AT THAT TIME AND THE ETM WAS CLEANED. NOW, JUST SHORT OF TWO YEARS LATER, I AM HAVING EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM AGAIN. AS I AM COMING TO A STOP, MY VEHICLE WILL SUDDENLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY SURGE FORWARD, EVEN WHEN MY FOOT IS ON THE BRAKE. I AM PETRIFIED THAT I AM GOING TO STRIKE THE BACK OF ANOTHER VEHICLE BEFORE I CAN ARRANGE TO GET MY CAR IN FOR SERVICE. FURTHER, WHEN I PUT MY CAR IN PARK OR USE THE AC SYSTEM, MY CAR COMES TO A NEAR STALL AND JUST LURCHES ALL OVER THE PLACE. IT SIMPLY CANNOT MAINTAIN AN EVEN IDLE WHEN IN PARK. LAST WEEK, FOR THE FIRST TIME, I BECAME AWARE OF THE NOVEMBER 2006 RECALL CONCERNING ETMS. THIS LED ME TO LOOK AT MY OLD SERVICE RECORDS, SINCE I WAS HAVING THE SAME FRIGHTENING PROBLEM THAT I HAD TWO YEARS AGO. SURE ENOUGH, THERE IT WAS AGAIN - "CUSTOMER STATES AT IDLE REVS UP AND SURGES." I HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR THIS REPAIR ONCE. YR 2000 VOLVO S80 2.9L. TWO SAFETY RELATED COMPLAINTS FOLLOW: 1. DASH BOARD (SPEEDOMETER, TACH, LIGHTS, ETC), ELECTRIC WINDOWS AND DOOR LOCKS, AND TURN SIGNALS JUST STOP WORKING ALL AT THE SAME TIME! I HAVE TO UNHOOK THE BATTERY TO RESET. COMMON PROBLEM FROM LOOKING AT INTERNET FORUMS. 2. AIRBAG MALFUNCTION LIGHT MESSAGE COMES ON WHEN THE AIRBAG HAS NOT DEPLOYED. THIS OCCURRED AFTER THE MYSTERIOUS ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTION DESCRIBED ABOVE. THE DEALER WANTS A FEE TO RESET AND CHECK THE AIRBAG FUNCTION. THIS IS ALSO COMMON FROM LOOKING AT INTERNET FORUMS. VEHICLE HAS THE SMELL OF FUEL. THE 2001-2005 MODELS HAVE A RECALL FOR THIS SAME ISSUE BECAUSE OF THE PLASTIC ON THE FUEL PUMP FLANGE CRACKING. MANY OWNERS OF THE 2000 MODELS ARE REPORTING THIS ISSUE. THE FUEL PUMP IS THE SAME USED ON THE 2000 YEAR MODEL AS THE 2001-2005 SO THE 2000 SHOULD BE PART OF THE RECALL ALSO. THE SMELL OF FUEL IS NOT JUST UNPLEASANT BUT DANGEROUS. I HAVE A 11 MONTH OLD SON WHO RIDES IN MY CAR AND IT WOULD BE TRAGIC IF SOMETHING HAPPENED TO MY FAMILY OR SOMEONE ELSE. WITHIN THE PAST FEW DAYS, I'VE GOTTEN MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE FOUL SMELL OF GASOLINE LINGERING ON MY VEHICLE. SURE ENOUGH, I TAKE IT TO A MECHANIC AND THE FUEL PUMP IS VISIBLY MOIST ON THE EXTERIOR FROM AN OBVIOUS FUEL LEAKAGE. I RESEARCHED "VOLVO S80 FUEL PUMP" AND FOUND A RECALL IS IN PLACE. THE RECALL STARTS FROM 2001 MODELS AND RANGES UP TO 2005 MODELS AND IS DUE TO THE MATERIAL USED IN THE FUEL PUMP (RECALL CAMPAIGN 09V-483). SINCE MY VEHICLE IS A 2000 MODEL, MY LOCAL VOLVO DEALERSHIP SAID "I DO NOT MEET THE QUALIFICATIONS". MY CONCERN IS IF THE MATERIAL USED IN THE ASSEMBLY OF THE FUEL PUMP CHANGED FROM S80 2000 TO 2001 MODELS. I WOULD LIKE TO BE NOTIFIED WHAT MATERIAL WAS USED FOR S80 2000 MODELS VERSUS THE MATERIAL USED FOR S80 2001 MODELS AND MAKE SURE THAT THE MATERIAL FOR S80 2000 MODELS "MAY NOT DEVELOP CRACKS DUE TO EXPOSURE TO CERTAIN ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND VARYING FUEL QUALITY" AS DOES THE S80 2001 MATERIAL. GASOLINE IS DRIPPING FROM THE FUEL SYSTEM DIRECTLY BELOW THE POSITION OF THE FUEL PUMP. THE VEHICLE IS REGISTERED IN SARASOTA, FLORIDA, A WARM WEATHER CLIMATE. WITHOUT ANY PRIOR WARNING, THE LEFT FRONT BALL JOINT SEPARATED AND DAMAGED THE AXLE. NO ODD NOISES BEFORE HAND. NO UNUSUAL TIRE WEAR. WE DO ALL SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE. NO WORK HAD RECENTLY BEEN DONE ON THE FRONT END. THE TECHNICIAN SAID HE DID NOT THINK THE VEHICLE HAD EVER BEEN IN A PRIOR ACCIDENT--HE SAW NO INDICATION OF THAT. MY DAUGHTER WAS ON HER WAY TO WORK--GOING 40 MPH--NO ONE AROUND HER, AND NOT YET ON THE FREEWAY WHERE SHE WAS HEADED, THANK GOD. THE TECHNICIAN CALLED IT A "CATASTROPHIC FAILURE" AND SAID HE WAS NOT EXAGGERATING WHEN HE USED THAT TERM. BOTH FRONT BALL JOINTS WERE REPLACED (AND THE ONE THAT DID NOT FAIL WAS NOT IN GOOD CONDITION EITHER) AND THE AXLE AND 2 NEW TIRES. THERE HAD BEEN A CAMPAIGN TO REPLACE THE ORIGINAL BALL JOINTS. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR CAR AND THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL FELL OFF. SHE HAD JUST PULLED OUT OF A DRIVEWAY AND WAS NOT GOING VERY FAST. THE CONSEQUENCES WERE THAT THE SUSPENSION WAS DAMAGED AND THE BALL JOINTS, WHICH HAD FAILED AND CAUSED THE COLLAPSE, AND THE CV JOINTS HAD TO BE REPLACED AND SOME OTHER BODY WORK AND REPAIRS HAD TO BE DONE. THE BALL JOINTS WERE SUBJECT OF A RECALL IN 2001, THEN OUR ACCIDENT WAS CAUSED BY A SUBSEQUENT FAILURE AND NOW I AM TOLD THE FRONT SUSPENSION IS LOOSE AND THE BALL JOINTS NEED REPLACING AGAIN. I THEN ADDED 24 FL. OZ. OF POWER STEERING FLUID AND THAT CORRECTED THE PROBLEM FOR ABOUT 5-10 MINUTES. I ENDED UP DRIVING THE REMAINDER OF THE TRIP WITH NO POWER STEERING. IT APPEARS THAT THE LEAK IS COMING FROM THE AREA OF THE POWER STEERING SERVO LOCATED AT THE LOWER END OF THE STEERING WHEEL ROD. CAR WAS TAKEN IN TODAY TO THE SHOP FOR REPAIRS. BOUGHT USED VOLVO 2000 S80 FROM VOLVO OF HOUSTON, HAD SHIPPED TO CALIFORNIA WITH 30K MILES. WE HAVE PUT ANOTHER 45K ON THE VEHICLE. VOLVO OF PLEASANTON, HAS GIVEN US EXCELLENT SERVICE, THE CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP 11 TIMES. I AM WRITING YOU THIS LETTER DUE TO THE INVESTIGATION FOR STALLING. I OWN A 2000 VOLVO S80 2.9 - VIN: [XXX]. I HAD PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW FROM BRIDGEWATER VOLVO IN NJ ON AUG 15, 2000. I HAVE 49,100 MILES ON THE CAR AND I HAVE MAINTAINED THE VEHICLE IMPECCABLY IN THE LAST 5 YEARS OF OWNERSHIP. TWO WEEKS AGO THE CAR STARTED STALLING AND THE MESSAGE DISPLAY READ "REDUCED PERFORMANCE". MY WIFE USES THE CAR TO COMMUTE TO WORK AND THE STALLING OF THE CAR ON THE HIGHWAYS PUT HER INTO A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. SHE WAS ABLE TO SAFELY PULLOVER AND THE CAR WOULD RE-START AGAIN EVERY TIME IT STALLED. SHE FINALLY GOT HOME AND AFTER THE SECOND DAY OF THE PROBLEMS SHE LEFT IT IN THE GARAGE AND USED THE SECOND CAR FOR COMMUTING. SHE THEN TOOK IT TO THE VOLVO DEALER IN EDISON NJ. VOLVO OF EDISON DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AND HERE IS THE DIRECT QOUTE FROM THEIR BILL - "PERFORMANCE REDUCED LIGHT FAULT TRACE ECM 91A7 AND ABS 00B1-FOUND INTERNAL FAULT IN ETM AND BRAKE PEDAL POSITION SENSOR REPLACE AND DOWNLOAD ETM AND BRAKE PEDAL POSITION SENSOR" SINCE THE CAR IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY I HAD TO PAY THE FOLLOWING AMOUNTS: PARTS - THROTTLE BODY, GASKET & SENSOR = $655.42 LABOR - $472.50 TAXES = $67.68 TOTAL = $1,195.60 I CALLED VOLVO CUSTOMER SERVICE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE PRE-MATURE FAILURES AND THEIR RESPONSE WAS THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT. I GET PERFORMANCE REDUCED MESSAGES ON MY 2000 VOLVO S80 MESSAGE CONSOLE, AND THE CAR WILL SLOW DOWN ALMOST TO A STOP. THIS HAS HAPPENED MORE THAN 100 TIMES TO ME - EVEN AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. I HAVE TO PUT THE HAZARD LIGHTS ON, AND MAKE MY WAY OFF OF THE ROAD ON TO THE SHOULDER. IF I TURN THE CAR OFF, AND RESTART THE CAR, (OFTEN SEVERAL TIMES), THE CAR SEEMS TO "RESET" AND I CAN OFTEN DRIVE ON. WESTSIDE VOLVO OF CLEVELAND, OHIO HAS QUOTED ME BETWEEN $1,200 AND $2,000 TO FIX THIS PROBLEM, AND HAS TOLD ME IT IS THE "ETM". MY CAR HAS 106,000 MILES ON IT. THE DEALER HAS TOLD ME THAT THE UNIT WAS "DESIGNED ONLY TO LAST UNTIL 100,000" MILES, AND THAT ONLY A VOLVO DEALER CAN REPLACE IT - BECAUSE OF COMPUTER SOFTWARE THAT MUST BE ENCODED ON THE PART. I PURCHASED THIS CAR USED WITH 59,000 MILES ON IT, THINKING I WOULD GET A CAR THAT MIGHT LAST ME ("VOLVO - FOR LIFE..." HAPPENS TO BE THE COMPANY'S MARKETING SLOGAN). HOWEVER, I CANNOT CURRENTLY AFFORD THE REPAIR, AND I CANNOT AFFORD TO GET ANOTHER CAR. I AM FORCED TO DRIVE THIS CAR AND IT IS UNSAFE. THIS CAR BEEN PARKED SINCE MID MAY 2012 WITH 2 PROBLEMS, CVVT & INLET HOSES. I HAD THE BATTERY CHARGED & THE INLET HOSE FIX, SO IT COULD GO INTO THE SHOP FOR INSPECTION. AUG.13 I PUT THE PLATES ON IT & DROVE IT FOR THE 1ST TIME AT NIGHT TO DROP IT OFF AT THE SHOP FOR INSPECTION. WHICH I HAD SPOKEN WITH 2 DAYS EARLIER.. THE MORNING OF AUG 14, I CALL THE SHOP AND WAS INFORMED MY CAR HAD A FUEL PUMP LEAK. I THAN CALL THE VOLVO CORP. CAUSE IT HAD ISSUE A RECALL FOR THE FUEL PUMP. THIS CAN BE DONE BY PULLING TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND STOPPING TO CYCLE THE KEY OR TRAFFIC PERMITTING PLACING IN NEUTRAL AND RESTARTING AND THEN BACK TO DRIVE. NO OBSERVED FAILURES ABOVE 65 MPH. IN EARLY JUL 05, I EXPERIENCED ELECTRONIC THROTTLE SYSTEM (ETS) PROBLEMS WITH MY 2000 VOLVO S80. PARTICULARLY CONCERNING TO ME FROM A SAFETY STANDPOINT WAS THAT SEVERAL TIMES, INCLUDING WHEN I WAS IN HIGHWAY DRIVING SITUATIONS, THE CAR ON ITS OWN SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND DECELERATED, HESITATED ON ACCELERATION OR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE, AND DISPLAYED ENGINE STALL SYMPTOMS. THE COMPUTER INDICATED DEGRADED ENGINE PERFORMANCE (LIMP MODE). I LINED UP A SERVICE APPOINTMENT WITH LOVERING VOLVO OF MEREDITH. AFTER LOVERING'S FIRST ATTEMPT AT REPAIRS, THE CAR WAS STILL NOT OPERATING NORMALLY AND I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER A SECOND TIME. I PAID A TOTAL OF $2,074.42 FOR REPAIRS, $1,741.44 THE FIRST TIME AND $332.98 DURING THE SECOND VISIT. IN ACCORDANCE WITH A JUNE 2006 VOLVO LETTER, I TOOK MY S80 BACK TO LOVERING FOR INSPECTION AND ETS SOFTWARE UPGRADE. I SUBMITTED TO VOLVO A CLAIM FOR REIMBURSEMENT FOR ETS REPAIRS. THE ADVERTISING CHECKING BUREAU (ACB), WHICH ADMINISTERS THE ETS WARRANTY REBATE PROGRAM ON BEHALF OF VOLVO, SENT ME A CHECK FOR $747.93 FOR THE ETS REPAIRS. ACB ADVISED ME TO CONTACT THE VOLVO CUSTOMER CARE CENTER. A VOLVO CUSTOMER CARE REPRESENTATIVE CONFIRMED THAT ACB HAD DONE AS INSTRUCTED AND SUGGESTED THAT I TAKE UP THE MATTER OF THE REMAINING REPAIR COSTS WITH LOVERING. I WAS DRIVING MY 2000 VOLVO S80 ON 5/19/10 AND HAD EXITED I-405, ONTO HWY 169, HEADING HOME TOWARDS MAPLE VALLEY, WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN I HEARD A VERY LOUD BANG, RESULTING IN SUDDEN STEERING LOSS, HEARD LOUD SQUEALING, AND SAW LOTS OF WHITE SMOKE. THE SMOKE WAS FROM THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRE, WHICH HAD TURNED OUTWARD, COMPLETELY SIDEWAYS AT A 90 DEGREE ANGLE. THE CAR IS NOW IN NO CONDITION TO BE DRIVEN. LAST YEAR MY S80 VOLVO STALLED ON THE HIGHWAY DUE TO AN ETM DEFECT. TWO DAYS, I EXPERIENCED ANOTHER SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE VOLVO. I WAS DRIVING THE CAR ON A BUSY STREET. SUDDENLY, AN ELECTRONIC MESSAGE CAME UP INDICATING A PROBLEM WITH THE AIR BAG. THEN TWO SECONDS LATER, A 'CHECK ENGINE MESSAGE' CAME UP. WITHIN ANOTHER MINUTE ANOTHER MESSAGE INDICATED 'TRANSMISSION SERVICE REQUIRED URGENTLY'. THEN WITHIN TWO MINUTES THE CAR WENT TO A LIMP MODE. THEY WERE CARS BEHIND ME. IT WAS A MIRACLE THAT WE WERE NOT INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. I SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND OUT THAT MANY PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCED SIMILAR PROBLEMS. I FOUND MANY COMPLAINTS ONLINE RELATED TO VOLVO SUDDEN TRANSMISSION FAILURE. SOME WERE EVEN INVOLVED IN ACCIDENTS WHEN THEIR CARS SUDDENLY STOPPED. I AM WONDERING WHETHER THE GOVERNMENT HAD LOOKED AT THIS SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. VOLVO MUST BE AWARE OF THE DEFECT. ETM (ELECTRIC THROTTLE MODULE INTAKE MANIFOLD) NEEDS TO BE REPLACED! (VOLVO ONLY HAS A VERY LIMITED EXTENDED WARRANTY ISSUED ON 4/2006. THE ETM WAS CLEANED 3 DIFFERENT TIMES SINCE 8/8/02; AND A SOFTWARE UPGRADE WAS COMPLETED ON 10/19/06. MY LAST 2 COMPLAINTS TO MY VOLVO DEALERSHIP MECHANIC HAS RESULTED IN DENIAL ON 10/19/06 AND REFUSAL TO REPAIR UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY ON 8/18/08 DUE TO UNRETRIEVABLE COMPUTER CODES (VOLVO ADMITS THE PROBLEM WAS STILL AN ETM PROBLEM). TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 VOLVO S80. THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED TWO FAILURES LISTED AS RECALLS FOR THE SUSPENSION AND VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT HIS VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALLS. HE IS VERY UPSET WITH BEING EXCLUDED FROM THE RECALLS BECAUSE THE FAILURES ARE IDENTICAL. WHILE PROCEEDING TO MAKE A LEFT TURN AT APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH, THE TIRE DETACHED FROM THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT FELT THAT THIS WAS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND THE WHEEL AXLE, LOWER CONTROL ARM, AND UPPER BALL JOINT WERE REPLACED. THE CONTACT ALSO OBSERVED THE FAILURE OF THE SPEED CONTROL MECHANISM. WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 55-60 MPH AND APPLYING PRESSURE TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, THE VEHICLE DECELERATED AND HESITATED. THIS FAILURE OCCURS ONLY DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED FOR THIS FAILURE. THE RECALL NUMBERS WERE UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 53,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.

SRS AIRBAG FAILURE AND ABS BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS AND ALERTS POSTED ON DASHBOARD DISPLAY. TURNS OUT THE PROBLEM WAS DEFECTIVE SOFTWARE AND WAS RESOLVED WITH A SOFTWARE UPDATE. THIS IS A CRITICAL SAFETY ISSUE SINCE THE FAILURE RESULTS IN THE DISABLING OF THE SYSTEMS. THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AND FIXED IN ABOUT AN HOUR. VOLVO CLEARLY NEW ABOUT THIS PROBLEMS SINCE THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE (AKA A FIX) WAS ALREADY COMPLETED AND AVAILABLE - VOLVO HAD TO PAY SOMEONE TO FIX THE SOFTWARE, WHY PAY THEM IF THERE WAS NO DEFECT. I BELIEVE THIS SAFETY ISSUE SHOULD BE AT LEAST ADVISED IF NOT MANDATORY FOR ALL OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES. CAR DOES NOT ACCELERATE SMOOTHLY, LARGE "SHUDDERS" PRESENT WHEN MERGING ONTO HWY, DURING TRANSMISSION/GEAR SHIFT. NOT GOOD! 2) AIRBAG "SRS-URGENT SERVICE" WARNING INDICATOR LIGHT IS ON. THE REAR BACK BUMPER WAS STRUCK AT AN ANGLE ON THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT HAS HAD THE REAR BUMPER REPLACED, AND NOW THE VEHICLE'S LEFT REAR DOOR IS NOT LOCKING AND THE SEAT BELTS NOT LATCHING. MY 2000 VOLVO S80 BEGAN GIVING ME ERROR MESSAGES OF SEVERAL KINDS, ONE OF WHICH TELLS ME "DIPPED BEAM BULB FAILURE." WHEN THAT HAPPENS, THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS DO NOT WORK (THEY COME ON WHEN I START THE CAR AS RUNNING LIGHTS). AFTER BUYING NEW BULBS TO PUT IN, I FOUND THAT THE OLD BULBS WERE NOT BURNED OUT AND THAT THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AT RANDOM. THE BIG PROBLEM WAS DRIVING HOME WITH THE BRIGHT LIGHTS ONLY - WHICH THOUGH SEEMED DIFFERENTLY, ARE NOT TOO AWFULLY BRIGHT - ONLY A FEW PEOPLE FLASHED ME. I THEN HAD OTHER CODES COMING UP AND HAD TO REPLACE THE "ABS CONTROLLER" TO THE TUNE OF $1000; AND, GUESS WHAT? I WANT TO ADD MY DOCUMENTATION ABOUT THE FAILURE OF THE THROTTLE MODULE AND SUBSEQUENT LACK OF APPROPRIATE ACTION. THE UNIT IN THE 2000 VOLVO S80 FAILED TO BRING THE CAR TO A COMPLETE HALT IN TRAFFIC IN DECEMBER 2004. SUBSEQUENT REPAIRS TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM WERE $845. IF VOLVO SENT OUT A NOTICE FOR ETM REPAIR REFUNDS LAST WINTER, I DID NOT RECEIVE IT DESPITE LIVING AT THE SAME ADDRESS AS WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN DEC 1999. I ALSO WANT TO CALL YOUR ATTENTION TO THE INCREASING PROBLEM WITH THE DSTC SYSTEM AS EVIDENCE BY ACTIVITY IN THE CHAT ROOMS. OUR VEHICLE SHOWS A PERSISTENT DSTC SERVICE MESSAGE THAT THE DEALER CLAIMS CAN NOT BE ADEQUATELY DIAGNOSED WITHOUT FIRST REPLACING THE YAW SENSOR FOR $668. OTHERS WITH THIS PROBLEM HAVE TURNED TO BUYING AND SELF INSTALLING REBUILT ABS UNITS WHICH THE NHTSA SHOULD BE PROACTIVELY SEEKING TO UNDERSTAND. THE CAUSE OF THE ABS UNIT FAILURE? SOME CLAIM IT IS THE VIBRATION AND POUNDING FROM THE ENTIRELY INADEQUATE FRONT END SUSPENSION AND WHEEL SYSTEM CAUSING THE ELECTRONIC PARTS TO FAIL. I CAN ATTEST TO THE SUSPENSION PROBLEM HAVING SPENT $1790 YESTERDAY TO REPLACE FRONT BUSHINGS, STABILIZER LINKS, STRUTS AND SPRING SEATS ON A CAR WITH 64K MILES. IN OCT 04, WE PURCHASED A VOLVO 2000 S80, [XXX]. WE WERE SATISFIED WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF THE CAR FOR THE MOST PART. SHORTLY AFTER WE PURCHASED THE VOLVO, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, AND AFTER HAVING THE CODES CHECK, THE OXYGEN SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. SINCE THE CAR WAS RUNNING SMOOTH AND W/AGREEMENT OF MY MECHANIC, I DID NOT HAVE THE OS REPLACED. IN MARCH 2006, ANOTHER MSG CAME ON THE MSG CTR, URGENT TRANSMISSION SERVICE REQ'D. AFTER HAVING THE PROBLEM CHECK OUT, I WAS TOLD THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE COMPLETELY OVERHAULED. MY TRANSMISSION OVERHAUL COST $1300. THE PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION, ACCORDING TO TRANSMISSION TECHNICIAN, WAS WITH THE OVERDRIVE CLUTCH HUB AND TWO SHIFT SOLENOIDS WERE DEFECTIVE. AFTER THE REPAIR THE CAR WAS RUNNING GREAT. ANOTHER PROBLEM CAME UP ON THE MSG CTR, STATING URGENT ENGINE SERVICE REQ'D. WE HAD DRIVEN LESS THAN THE 100 MI WHEN ANOTHER MSG APPEARED. AFTER CHECKING W/MY MECHANIC AND ANOTHER OWNER OF A 2000 S80 VOLVO, WHO HAD EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM, IT WAS DETERMINED WE HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE ETM (ELECT THROTTLE MOD), WHICH WAS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH VOLVO. L. AFTER MORE INVESTIGATING, I FOUND OUT THAT THE WARRANTY ON THE ETM HAD BEEN EXTENDED TO 200,000 MILES, MY CAR HAD A LITTLE OVER 125,000 MILES. I SCHEDULED MY CAR FOR REPAIR AT MY LOCAL VOLVO DEALERSHIP, TIM MARBURGER VOLVO OF BRISTOL, TN, FOR REPAIR UNDER A WARRANTY PROBLEM. MY CAR WAS REPAIRED/UPGRADED TO FIX THE ISSUE WITH THE ETM. MY VOLVO IS CURRENTLY RUNNING MUCH BETTER THAN IT'S RUN SINCE WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. IT WAS TOWED TO THE REPAIR SHOP, THEY REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY, MASS AIR FLOW, MFI MODULE- AT COST OF 2098.96. THE CONTACT DID NOT TAKE THIS CAR ON ANY LONGER TRIP. DUE TO STALLING ON THE ROAD, FREQUENT LOSS OF HEADLIGHTS AND NUMEROUS OTHER MECHANICAL PROBLEMS THE CONTACT BELIEVED THIS CAR WAS UNSAFE TO BE ON THE ROAD. 11-16 E-MAIL ; FIRST TIME THE CAR WOULD NOT RESPOND TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. 2000 VOLVO S80 T6 ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS THE VEHICLE WOULD STALL, EVEN WHEN DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHILE DRIVING MY CHILDREN TO SCHOOL ON THE HIGHWAY THE VEHICLE STALLED FORCING ME TO CROSS 3-4 LANES OF HEAVY TRAFFIC WITHOUT THE USE OF POWER STEERING OR POWER BRAKES. THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE WAS DETERMINED TO BE DEFECTIVE. THIS IS A KNOWN DEFECTIVE PART ON 1999-2001 VOLVO S80'S. THERE ARE EVEN DOCUMENTED REPORTS THAT THE ETM WILL FAIL ON OVER 90% OF ALL VOLVO S80'S WITHIN THIS YEAR RANGE ('99-01). I HAVE SPENT $900 TO HAVE THIS REPLACED. THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA IS FILING A LAWSUIT AGAINST VOLVO OVER THIS PART. I LIVE IN KY; THEREFORE I DON'T BELIEVE THAT LAWSUIT WILL HELP ME. I AM ASKING VOLVO FOR FULL REIMBURSEMENT TO REPLACE THIS PART. IT NOT ONLY WAS A FAULTY DESIGN, BUT ALSO POTENTIALLY DEADLY PART. THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A FULL RECALL ON THIS PART AND VOLVO KNEW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM EVEN BEFORE THE RELEASE OF THE VEHICLE IN '99. ANOTHER COMPLAINT FOR THE VOLVO S80 THROTTLE MODULE CAUSING THE CAR TO LOSE ALL POWER ON THE FREEWAY. I WAS FORTUNATE THAT EACH TIME THIS OCCURRED, I WAS IN A POSITION TO GET OFF THE ROAD SAFELY. THE SITUATION COULD HAVE BEEN DISASTROUS, HOWEVER. I WORK IN NASHVILLE WHERE EVERY ROUTE TO WORK IS UNDERGOING ROAD CONSTRUCTION AND DOES NOT HAVE A SHOULDER TO PULL OFF ON. HAD THE ETM FAILED IN ONE OF THESE LOCATIONS, I WOULD LIKELY HAVE BEEN HIT BY OTHER AUTOS UNABLE TO AVOID ME. I HAD THE PART REPLACED FOR ABOUT $850 AS VOLVO CLAIMED THAT IT WAS NOT A PROBLEM AND REFUSED TO FIX IT. IN ADDITION TO THE FAULTY ETM IS THE ABS CONTROL UNIT FOR THE AIRBAGS AND TRACTION CONTROL. ACCORDING TO WHAT I'VE SEEN ON VOLVO MESSAGE BOARDS (VOLVOSPY.COM, SWEDESPEED.COM AND BRICKBOARD.COM), THIS PART ALSO SEEMS TO FAIL AS FREQUENTLY AS THE ETM. SHORTLY AFTER BUYING A VOLVO 80, I NOTICED THAT THE CAR WOULD SURGE PERIODICALLY. I WAS TOLD THAT THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE CLEANED. AFTER READING UP ON THIS, IT SOUNDED LIKE A WASTE OF MONEY SO I AM STUCK WITH A $40+K CAR THAT HAS A SIZABLE DEFECT. THE SURGING IS SO BAD THAT IF YOU DON'T HOLD THE BRAKE PEDAL HARD THE CAR WILL SURGE FORWARD IE AT RED LIGHTS. NOTHING WAS DONE TO CORRECT THIS FAILURE. I AM THE SECOND OWNER. ALSO I HAD TO REPLACE A BALL JOINT ON THIS CAR AFTER A RECALLED BALL JOINT WAS INSTALLED AT MY COST. THE DEALER SAID THE RECALL WAS ONLY A BOLT AND NOT THE WHOLE JOINT BUT I VERIFIED THAT THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD BOTH BALL JOINTS REPLACED VIA A VOLVO RECALL. I BELIEVE THE RECALLED JOINT WAS DEFECTIVE LIKE THE ORIGINAL ONE. NO ACCIDENTS OCCURED BUT IT PUT MY STEERING WAY OUT OF WHACK AND NEEDED AN ALIGNMENT. (ALL AT MY COST)

I SHOULD HAVE KNOW THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH MY USED 2000 VOLVO S80 T6 TWO WEEKS AFTER PURCHASED IT WHEN THE ENGINE CUT OFF ON ME WHILE I WAS GOING THROUGH AN INTERSECTION. I JUST THOUGHT THAT MY CAR WAS STILL WARMING UP AND THAT IS WHY THE ENGINE CUT OFF. THEN A COUPLE WEEKS LATER MY AUTOMATIC DOOR LOCKS WOULD WORK INTERMITTENTLY SO MUCH SO THAT I HAD TO USE MY REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY JUST TO UNLOCK MY DOORS WHILE I AM SITTING INSIDE MY CAR! BUT THIS ISN'T THE WORST OF IT. WHILE I AM ON MY WAY TO A HAIR APPT IN HEAVY LOS ANGELES TRAFFIC, MY CAR STARTING STALLING. I WAS DOING 30 - 50 MILES PER HOUR GOING DOWN THE FREEWAY AND MY CAR WOULD JUST CUT OFF. IMAGINE IF MY 3 YEAR DAUGHTER WAS IN THE CAR AT THE TIME. I COULDN'T BELIEVE THAT I WAS HAVING ENGINE PROBLEMS WITH THE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED VOLVO. I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT. I WAS UPSET AND PISSED OFF THAT MY CAR WAS STILL CONSIDERED SAFE TO DRIVE. ALL OF THESE MODELS SHOULD BE TAKEN OFF THE STREETS. I EVENTUALLY HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE VOLVO DEALER AND LUCKILY I STILL HAD THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT IT WAS A FAULTY ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE AND THEY REPLACED IT. MY CAR WAS WORKING FINE UNTIL TWO WEEKS AGO WHEN THE SAME ISSUE HAS STARTED TO OCCUR WITH THE AUTOMATIC LOCKS. I CAN'T UNLOCK THE AUTOMATIC LOCKS FROM INSIDE OF MY CAR, I HAVE TO USE THE REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY. EVERY TRIP TO THE DEALERSHIP IS EASILY $1000 PLUS. AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE, THE RESEARCH WAS SCANT IN TERMS OF PROBLEMS. I HAVE TRULY BEEN DISMAYED BY VOLVO'S COMMITMENT TO ITS PRODUCT AND IS DESIGN FLAWS AND/OR DEFECTS. AFTER, THE TRANSMISSION WAS CORRECTED AT THE DEALERSHIP, I WENT TO TRADE THE CAR IN---TO PURCHASE ANOTHER CAR. THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR BASICALLY WOULD NOT GIVE MONEY ON ITS TRADE. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE GOES INTO "LIMP" MODE AND A ERROR MESSAGE SAYING "SAFELY PULL OVER AND RESTART VEHICLE" GOES ON. THE VEHICLE WOULDN'T EXCEED 5 MPH WITH TRAFFIC BEHIND ME. IT IS A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION, WHICH HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES. BUT I'VE FINALLY BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND APPARENTLY THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY MODULE, AND THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE MODULE BOTH HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THEN AFTER CHECKING SEVERAL FORUMS THIS SEEMS TO BE AN EPIDEMIC FOR THE VOLVO S80.

AT 70MPH MY CAR SAID REDUCED PERFORMANCE, AND WITHIN 30 SEC. MY CRUISE CONTROL FAILED, THE CAR REDUCED TO 5MPH, AND THERE WAS NO ACCELERATION. I WAS IN 5 LANES OF RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC DOING 70-80MPH. AN EIGHTEEN WHEELER SKIDDED APPROX. 50 FEET IN ORDER TO AVOID HITTING ME. HE THEN HAD TO BLOCK OFF TWO LANES OF TRAFFIC TO ASSIST ME TO THE SHOULDER. MY CAR WOULD ONLY COAST. IT WAS A NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE FOR ME. I'M THANKFUL MY CHILDREN WERE NOT WITH ME. AFTER BEING TURNED OFF OVER NIGHT, MY HUSBAND ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE IT TO THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP. HE EXPERIENCED THE SAME. WE WERE TOLD THAT IT WAS DUE TO A COMPUTER CHIP MALFUNCTION. A CHIP WHICH CONTROLS THE THROTTLE, FUEL-INJECTION, AND CRUISE CONTROL. WOW! THE SERVICE REP. "WE HAVEN'T SEEN ANYMORE PROBLEMS AFTER REPLACING THE CHIP". WE ASKED WHY HAS THIS NOT BEEN RECALLED. THE REP. SAID "THERE HAVE TO BE SO MANY ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES REPORTED, BEFORE THEY WILL RECALL IT". THIS HAS LEFT ME VERY DISTURBED, AND RELUCTANT TO EVER DRIVE A VOLVO AGAIN. I FEEL SURE IF IT HADN'T BEEN FOR MY QUICK USE OF THE HAZARD LIGHTS, IT COULD HAVE BEEN FATAL. THE TRUCK DRIVER ALSO CONCURRED. I DO NOT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO ANYONE ELSE. THEY MAY NOT BE SO LUCKY.

CONTINUOUS AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT. CAR DIES ON ROAD. GET FIXED, THEN AIR BAG LIGHT COMES ON AGAIN. RAN INTO A PERSON WHO VOLVO AIRBAGS DEPLOYED WITHOUT REASON AND SHE WAS INJURED. AFTER EXITING HIGHWAY, CAR "DIED." I AM LUCKY TO BE ALIVE AS THE WHEEL STIFFENED UP & I HAD TO RELY ON THE PARKING BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN. HAD TO GET A "JUMP START" TO GET HOME. CAR IS UNSAFE. RETURNED TO VOLVO. ALSO HAD STEERING WHEEL THAT SHAKES AT HIGWAY SPEEDS, ALARM THAT WENT OFF WHILE DRIVING, & WOULDN'T START, REMOTE DOOR OPENER DOESN'T ALWAYS WORK, SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT FLICKERED ON & OFF -- SAID IT WAS AN EMISSIONS PROBLEM.

SIMILAR TO A NHTSA COMPLAINT NUMBER 873996, THIS VEHICLE (2000 VOLVO S-80 T6) SHUT DOWN DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING AT 70 MPH. CONSOLE MESSAGE STATUS INDICATED "ENGINE SYSTEM SERVICE URGENT" AFTER COASTING TO SAFE LOCATION, ENGINE WOULD NOT RE-START UNTIL COOLED. AFTER STARTING, THE MESSAGE STATUS REMAINED THE SAME, BUT CRUISE CONTROL WAS INOPERABLE, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT OPERATE ABOVE 2000 RPM IN BOTH AUTOMATIC -OR- MANUAL MODE. EARLY SYMPTOMS OF THIS PROBLEM MAY HAVE BEEN FALSELY MANIFESTED AS POOR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFTING PERFORMANCE IN 3RD, 4TH, AND OVERDRIVE GEARS. THE SYMPTOMS HAVE PERSISTED UNTIL FAILURE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. I HAVE BEEN TO THE DEALER ON MANY OCCASIONS FOR OTHER REPAIRS SUCH AS THE ROOF TOP COVER, BRAKE LIGHTS...BECAUSE OF THE BALL JOINTS AND THE ON AND OFF HUMING NOISE, I AM UNCOMFORTABLE DRIVING THE CAR BEYOND THE AREA. PROBLEM NUMBER 1:ON 07/18/2000 FOUND TO HAVE NONE OF THE CONTROLS ON DRIVERS DOOR PANEL MASTER SWITCH WERE WORKING. MY CAR HAS BEEN REPAIRING ON VOLVO STATION FROM 07/19/2000 TO 08/16/2000. MASTER SWITCH WAS REPLACED AND SOFTWARE DOWNLOADED. IT TOOK ALMOST ONE MONTH TO FIX MY CAR.PROBLEM NUMBER 2ON 02/13/2001 DURING HIGH SIDE IMPACT WITH ANOTHER CAR NONE OF AIRBAGS AND NONE OF SIDE IMPACT PROTECTION SYSTEM WORKED. THREE PEOPLE WERE INJURED. IMPACT OCCURRED AT THE RIGHT SIDE (PASSENGER) T-BONE AND RIGHT FRONT FENDER. VOLVOCARS WAS CONTACTED. THEY REFUSED TO RELEASE THEIR TECHNICAL EVALUATION OF MY CAR.
