TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 VOLVO S80. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE RPMS BEGAN TO FLUCTUATE ABNORMALLY AS THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED SIGNS OF POSSIBLE STALLING. THE VEHICLE THEN ACTIVATED IN LIMP MODE AND STOPPED RUNNING. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 06V441000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL) THAT DEALT WITH THE DIRTY THROTTLE HOUSING. THE RECALL REPAIR CONSISTED OF A SOFTWARE UPGRADE TO CORRECT THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, BUT THE VEHICLE EXCEEDED THE WARRANTY STIPULATIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 87,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 VOLVO S80. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH THE VEHICLE SHIFTED INTO LIMP MODE AND DECELERATED AFTER THE CHECK ENGINE LAMP ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED UNDER RECALL NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 06V441000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 170,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 170,200.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 VOLVO S80. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD HESITATE BEFORE RESPONDING TO ACCELERATION ATTEMPTS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY ADVISED THAT THE THROTTLE MODULE HAD FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE CLEANED AND REPLACED. THE THROTTLE WAS CLEANED BUT THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE AFTER THE CLEANING SO THE THROTTLE WAS NOT REPLACED. THE FAILURE RECURRED WITHIN A FEW WEEKS. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON. I TOOK MY CAR TO MY MECHANIC WHO INFORMED ME THE CODE WAS FOR THROTTLE BODY POSITION SENSOR AND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL. I CALLED THE VOLVO DEALER AND ASKED THEM ABOUT IT. THEY SAID, YES THERE WAS A RECALL FOR SOFTWARE AND THAT MY VEHICLE HAD GOTTEN THE UPGRADE. I ASKED IF THERE WAS ANYTHING ELSE THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT, THE EMPLOYEE IN VOLVO SERVICE SAID NO. I RECEIVED THE SAME ANSWER WHEN I ASKED THEM IN PERSON. ON MARCH 1, 2011, NEARLY A YEAR LATER, I ASKED ANOTHER MECHANIC, WHO INFORMED ME THAT IF THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE DIDN'T WORK, THE DEALER WAS SUPPOSED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE THROTTLE BODY. I CALLED THE ANOTHER VOLVO DEALER WHO INFORMED ME THAT YES, THIS WAS THE CASE. MY CAR WAS ONE DAY OUT OF COVERAGE FOR THE RECALL NOW. AND SOMETIME WITHIN THE YEAR MY COMPUTER WAS RESET AND THE PROBLEM CODE FOR THE THROTTLE BODY IS GONE. I AM UPSET BECAUSE WHEN IT WAS A PROBLEM FOR ME, THE FIRST DEALER GAVE ME THE INCORRECT INFORMATION ABOUT THE RECALL. I WAS DRIVING FOR A LONG TIME WITH MY CAR IN LIMP MODE AND A MALFUNCTIONING THROTTLE BODY. I AM SURE THAT THE DEALER WAS OBLIGATED TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY, SINCE IT IS PART OF THE ACCELERATION SYSTEM. I THINK YOU SHOULD COMPEL THEM TO REPLACE MY THROTTLE BODY OR GUARANTEE REPLACEMENT IF MY THROTTLE BODY MALFUNCTIONS AGAIN. *TR

WHILE TRAVELING AT 25 MPH, I APPLIED BRAKES TO STOP ABOUT 30-35 FEET BEHIND ANOTHER VEHICLE, WHEN MY VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED (WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKES AND) AND LAUNCHED FORWARD AND STRUCK THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF ME, CAUSING INJURY TO THE DRIVER AND THE PASSENGER AND RESULTED IN A LAWSUIT AGAINST ME. MY ETM ON VOLVO S80, T6 MODEL (YEAR 2001) HAS A RECALL ON IT ISSUED BY VOLVO BUT THE PROBLEM IS THAT THIS PART ALONG WITH THE THROTTLE BODY IS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDS CONSTANT COMPUTER UPDATE, AND THAN THE ETM FAULTS WITHOUT NOTICE AND TAKES WITH IT THE WHOLE INFRASTRUCTURE DESPITE ETM BEING SERVICED AND NEW SOFTWARE BEING INSTALLED BY DEALER. THE DEALER IS NOT ALWAYS KEEN ON WORKING ON ETM OR THROTTLE BOTTLE ISSUES AS THEY DON'T GET PAYMENT ON TIME FROM VOLVO AND THEY NEED TO DO A LOT OF PAPER WORK TO ET PAID BY VOLVO USA. THE CAR STALLS SUDDENLY AND ONE OF THESE DAYS I AM AFRAID THIS WILL LEAD TO A MAJOR CRASH AS GOV.'T CAN'T STOP WHAT VOLVO USA WANTS TO ACCOMPLISH AND THAT IS PROFITS AND NOT RECALLING THEIR DEFECTIVE EQUIPMENT. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 VOLVO S80. WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH DOWNHILL, THE CONTACT SMELLED BURNING AND SAW SMOKE. THE VEHICLE HAD NO ACCELERATION, POWER STEERING, OR BRAKE FUNCTION. THE CONTACT APPLIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. ALL OF THE WARNING INDICATOR LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE BURST INTO FLAMES FIFTEEN SECONDS AFTER STOPPING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED. THE VOLVO INVESTIGATORS STATED THAT THE FIRE WAS CAUSED BY BIRD SEED DEPOSITS UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 56,000.

I PURCHASED MY VOLVO S80 NOT EVEN 1 YEAR AGO AND I AM EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH MY CAR LOSING ACCELERATION IN TRAFFIC AND IDLING WILDLY. THE PROBLEM HAS BECOME SO SEVERE THAT AT ONE POINT AT A COMPLETE STOP, MY CAR SURGED FORWARD AND HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME! THANK GOODNESS THERE WAS NO DAMAGE OR INJURIES TO MYSELF OR TO THE CAR INVOLVED. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS INFORMED THE PROBLEM LIES WITH THE THROTTLE. HOWEVER, VOLVO REFUSES TO ISSUE A RECALL AND HIDES BEHIND THE "WARRANTY" SONG AND DANCE EVEN THOUGH THEY AGREE THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE THROTTLES IN THEIR VEHICLES. I DID MUCH RESEARCH (OR SO I THOUGHT) BEFORE PURCHASING MY VEHICLE. I CHOSE VOLVO BECAUSE THEY ADVERTISE THE FACT THAT THEY MANUFACTURE ONE OF THE SAFEST CARS ON THE MARKET. THIS CAR RUNS SO ERRATICALLY THAT I AM EVEN AFRAID TO CHANGE LANES IN TRAFFIC BECAUSE I AM JUST AFRAID THAT IT IS GOING TO STOP RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE AND I AM GOING TO BE HIT BY THE CAR BEHIND ME. I AM AFRAID TO STOP AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS BECAUSE THE CAR WONT ACCELERATE AND RUN NORMALLY THEREFORE ILL HAVE UPSET DRIVERS IN BACK OF ME WAITING UNTIL THE CAR DECIDES TO MOVE FORWARD. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING WITH A LOT OF TRAFFIC AROUND YOU. I WAS DRIVING APPROX. 65 MILES AN HOUR ON I395 AND I WAS IN THE PASSING LANE. I WENT TO ACCELERATE AND MOVE INTO THE TRAVEL LANE AND I WAS NOT ABLE TO ACCELERATE. MY SPEED STARED TO REDUCE AND ALL OF THE POWER SHUT OFF IN THE VEHICLE. NO WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND NO INDICATION ON WHAT THE CAR WAS SHUTTING DOWN. I CHECKED FOR VEHICLES BEHIND ME AND AROUND ME AND PUT ON MY HAZARD LIGHTS. I QUICKLY PULLED OFF OF THE BUSY HIGHWAY AND MANAGED TO STOP AT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD (MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY - NEXT TO THE MEDIAN). THE POLICE HAD SEEN ME PULL OVER AND CALLED A WRECKER SERVICE. THE CAR WAS BROUGHT TO THE PLACE WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE (FOREIGN MOTORS EAST IN BROOKLYN, CT) AND THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR THE NEXT 3 DAYS. THEY WERE UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE AND THIS JUST HAPPENED AGAIN LAST MONTH (JUNE 20TH 2007). IT WAS THE SAME CONDITIONS...DRIVING ON I395 WHEN THE ACCELERATION STOPPED AND THE CAR STARTED TO SLOW DOWN. I PULLED THE CAR OVER AND TURNED OFF THE CAR. 2001 S80 VOLVO ETM FAILURE. IT STARTED AS VEHICLE HESITATION, THEN PROCEEDED TO SURGING FORWARD WITH NO THROTTLE INPUT, THEN PROGRESSED TO NO ACCELERATOR RESPONSE WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKE PEDAL, THEN TO STALLING WHEN COASTING LEAVING THE DRIVER WITH NO POWER STEERING OR BRAKES AT SPEEDS UP TO 55 MPH, THEN TO ROUGH IDLE AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. ALL SYMPTOMS WERE PRESENT UPON TAKING TO THE DEALER BASED ON SOME WEB RESEARCH TO IDENTIFY TO PROBLEM. THE DEALER RETURNED WITH AN ANALYSIS FOR TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT, ENGINE TUNE UP, ENGINE COOLANT FLUSH, CRANKCASE VENTILATION SYSTEM CLEANING, BRAKE SYSTEM FLUSHING, AND MASS AIR FLOW REPLACEMENT AMOUNTING TO AN INITIAL COST OF $1980.00 US. I REQUESTED A CONFERENCE WITH THE TECHNICIAN, AND A REVIEW OF THE DIAGNOSTICS REPORT. THE END RESULT WAS A MAF REPLACEMENT PAID FOR BY ME (CUSTOMER) AND AMAZINGLY THE TECH NOTES RECOMMENDED CLEANING OF THE CRANKCASE VENTILATION SYSTEM AND THE ETM CLEANING WHICH WAS COVERED BY THE DEALER. TOTAL COST WAS $328.21 TO CONSUMER AND BALANCE COVERED BY DEALER. THE REPAIRS WERE MADE ON 3/07/06, REPLACED MAF UNAVAILABLE. I FEEL THAT I HAVE BEEN TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF AND ESSENTIALLY PAID $328 UNNECESSARILY DUE TO FURTHER WEB RESEARCH IDENTIFYING CLEANING OF THE ETM AND CRANKCASE VENTILATION SYSTEM WOULD IN FACT CAUSE TROUBLE CODES LEADING THE REPLACEMENT OF THE MAF. *JB

I OWN A 2001 VOLVO S-80. THERE IS A DANGEROUS PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR . IT INVOLVES THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE (ETM). THE CAR AT TIMES WILL NOT MOVE EVEN THOUGH THE ENGINE IS RUNNING AND THE CAR IS IN GEAR. IT JUST WILL NOT MOVE. PARTICULARLY WHEN TRYING TO MOVE INTO TRAFFIC. I AM AWARE THROUGH MY READING OF THE FACT THAT THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF VEHICLES WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. VOLVO KNOWS ABOUT THIS BUT TO DATE HAS DONE NOTHING TO CORRECT IT. WEEK OF 10/10/05 AS TRAVELING UPHILL, MY CAR SPUTTERED AND LOSS POWER. AFTER NEARLY BEING REAR ENDED ON THE BUSY ROAD, I WAS ABLE TO LIMB MY CAR INTO A PARKING LOT AND TURN OFF THE ENGINE. AFTER A FEW MINUTES, I WAS ABLE TO RESTART MY CAR AND CONTINUE DRIVING. TODAY, 10/18/05, AS I WAS ENTERING I-85, MY CAR ONCE AGAIN SPUTTERED AND STALLED. THE ENTRANCE RAMP WAS DOWNHILL, SO I WAS ABLE TO COAST INTO THE EMERGENCY LANE AS TRACTOR TRAILERS AND CARS WHIZZED BY ME. I RESTARTED THE CAR AFTER A FEW MINUTES OF BEING TURNED OFF. I WENT TO A MECHANIC FRIEND AND HE TOLD ME THAT IT WAS PROBABLY THE ETM AND IF IT WAS NOT, IT WOULD BE THE NEXT TIME THE CAR BREAKS DOWN. HE COULD NOT REPAIR IT. HE ESTIMATED THE DEALERSHIP WOULD CHARGE ME $1200.00. HE REPORTED THAT HE SEES THIS AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH IN VOLVOS. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER. AN HOUR AND A HALF LATER, I WAS INFORMED MY ETM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND THE COST WOULD BE $1150.00. I RELUNCTANTLY AGREED TO THE REPAIR. I HAVE RESEARCHED THE ETM PROBLEM OVER THE INTERNET AND HAVE LEARNED THAT VOLVO KNEW OF THIS PROBLEM YEARS BEFORE THEY SOLD THE CAR TO ME. AT A PERSONAL LEVEL, I HAD TO PAY FOR A DEFECTIVE PART THAT VOLVO HAS KNOWN IT HAS A 94%-100% FAILURE RATE! AT A MUCH HIGHER LEVEL, VOLVO IS RISKING PEOPLE LIVES BY NOT INFORMING OR VOLUNTARILY RECALLING THIS DEFECTIVE PART. CARS STALL UNEXPECTIVELY. I WAS FORTUNATE THAT I WAS NOT ON THE INTERSTATE YET. OTHERWISE, THE OUTCOME COULD HAVE BEEN DEADLY.

2001 VOLVO S 80 T6 EX TRANSMISSION FAILURE. BASED ON PERSONAL RESEARCH IT APPEARS THAT THE 2001 VOLVOS HAVE A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM WITH TRANSMISSION FAILURE. TRANSMISSIONS WERE BUILT BY GM FOR VOLVO AND TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS ACROSS THE ENTIRE LINE FOR THAT YEAR ARE EXTREMELY HIGH. IS THERE OR CAN THERE BE AN INVESTIGATION OF THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE A 2001 VOLVO S80 T6 WITH 61000 MILES. WITHIN THE LAST TWO WEEKS IT FELT AS THOUGH THE CAR WAS "SLIPPING" OUT OF GEAR ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS... THE RPMS WOULD FLAIR THEN NORMALIZE. YESTERDAY THE CAR JUST QUIT MOVING. IT WAS TOWED TO THE VOLVO DEALER AND I WAS JUST TOLD THE TRANSMISSION IS SHOT AND WOULD COST $4000 TO REPLACE WITH A REMANUFACTURED ONE. MY PROBLEM DOES NOT SEEM TO BE AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. I'VE FOUND THAT ITS WELL KNOWN THE TRANSMISSION IS A PROBLEM AND SINCE THEY TEND TO FAIL AFTER 50000 MILES, VOLVO'S WARRANTY IS EXPIRED. NOW I'M STUCK WITH PUTTING THE SAME WORTHLESS TRANSMISSION BACK INTO THE VEHICLE ONLY TO EXPECT IT TO FAIL AGAIN IN THE FUTURE. VOLVO NEEDS TO RECALL THE TRANSMISSION OR EXTEND THE WARRANTY TO AT LEAST 100000 MILES. *JB

WHILE DRIVING ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY AT 65-70 MPH, MY 2001 VOLVO S80 T6 DISPLAYED A MESSAGE INDICATING "REDUCED POWER". I WAS ABLE TO STEER THE CAR, BUT PUSHING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL HAD NO EFFECT. I WAS FORCED TO MANEUVER TO THE SHOULDER AND HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO MY LOCAL DEALER. THE CAR WOULD START AND CONTINUE TO RUN, BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT "GO". IT WAS AS IF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL HAD BEEN DISCONNECTED. THIS WAS ACTUALLY THE SECOND TIME THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO THIS CAR. THE FIRST OCCURRED A MERE 20 MONTHS EARLIER. THE VOLVO MECHANIC INDICATED - DURING BOTH INCIDENTS - THAT THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL MODULE HAD FAILED AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. MY CAR WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY EITHER TIME - HAD JUST EXCEEDED WARRANTY MILEAGE WHEN THE FIRST INCIDENT HAPPENED. IN ADDITION TO BEING PUT INTO A DANGEROUS SITUATION ON A CROWDED INTERSTATES HIGHWAY, I WAS FORCED TO PAY MORE THAN $1000 TO HAVE THE PART REPLACED EACH TIME. *NM

THIS CAR WAS STUCK IN PARK. WE COULD NOT SHIFT THE CAR OUT OF PARK INTO DRIVE. WE WERE STUCK IN A LINE OF TRAFFIC AND IT WAS A DANGEROUS INCIDENT. WE REPEATEDLY CORRECTLY DEPRESSED THE BUTTON ON THE GEAR SELECTOR KNOB AND AND AT THE SAME TIME DEPRESSSED THE BRAKE PEDAL ( WE HAVE DONE THIS THOUSANDS OF TIMES ON THIS VEHICLE FROM 2001 TO PRESENT WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS) . IT TOOK OVER 15 MINUTES OF TURNING OFF THE ENIGINE AND RESTARTING IT, TURNING THE STEERING BACK AND FORTH TO FINALLY GET IT OUT OF PARK INTO DRIVE. WE ARE FULLY AWARE OF THE BRAKE SHIFT INTERLOCK SAFETY FEATURE. THIS INCIDENT WAS THE RESULT OF EQUIPMENT MALFUNCTION AND NOT OPERATOR ERROR. MY WIFE AND I EACH STRUGGLED TO FINALLY GET IT FROM PARK TO DRIVE. THIS IS A REAL EQUIPMENT PROBLEM THAT NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED AND CORRECTED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 VOLVO S-80. THE CONTACT STATED AFTER HAVING THE BATTERY REPLACED, THE CLIMATE CONTROL UNIT BECAME INOPERABLE. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO RESET THE UNIT AND ADVISED IT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT BELIEVED THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD TAKE THE LIABILITY FOR THE FAILURE WHICH COULD POTENTIALLY BECOME A SAFETY ISSUE WHEN TRYING TO DEFOG THE WINDOWS, DISRUPTING VISIBILITY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 74,610 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 74,665.

I WAS GOING THROUGH AN AUTOBUFF'S CARWASH IN DOUGLASVILLE, GA AND MY SUNROOF IMPLODED! I TOOK MY CAR TO VOLVO AND THEY SAID THAT THEY WOULD ONLY COVER THE GLASS, NOT THE LABOR, NOR THE CRACKED WINDSHIELD, ETC. THERE ARE MORE THAN 81 OTHER PERSONS WHO HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE WITH THEIR VOLVO, AND YET VOLVO DOES NOT CHOOSE TO CONSIDER IT A NECESSARY RECALL. MY 2001 VOLVO S-80 SUDDENLY LOST ALL POWER AND CAME TO A STOP AND WOULD NOT RESTART. THIS OCCURRED IN SEPT. 2003. THE DEALERSHIP, BEACH VOLVO IN MYRTLE BEACH, SC, WANTED OVER $600 TO REPAIR THE AUTO SINCE IT WAS BEYOND THE 50,000 MILE WARRANTY. IT HAD 60,000 MILES AT THE TIME. AFTER A LENGTHY DISCUSSION WITH VOLVO AMERICA, THEY AGREED TO SPLIT THE COST BETWEEN MYSELF, THE DEALERSHIP AND VOLVO AMERICA. THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY WAS REPLACED. CAR SHUT DOWN AND LUNGES FORWARD AT A LIGHT/TOOK TO DEALER AND FIXED RESET VALVE STICKING AND GASKET HAPPENED AGAIN REPLACED BOX AND PIPE REMOVED TRAP BOX IN PIPE, SHUT DOWN AGAIN REPLACED DID TOTAL CAN UP GRADE FAILED AGAIN. I OWN A 2001 VOLVO S80. I HAVE HAD TROUBLE WITH THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE NOT RESPONDING TO THE THROTTLE INPUTS AND SURGING AT IDLE. IT WOULD SOMETIMES KILL THE CAR WITHOUT WARNING WHEN COMING TO A STOP (LOSING POWER-STEERING WHILE IN TURNS) OR MAKE THE CAR LUNGE FORWARD UNEXPECTEDLY. THE LUNGING FORWARD HAS ALMOST CAUSED ACCIDENTS AT INTERSECTIONS. I'VE BEEN LUCKY FOR NOW, BUT I WILL NOT LET MY WIFE DRIVE THE CAR WHILE IT IS DOING THIS BECAUSE SHE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR WITHOUT POWER STEERING AND BRAKES. I TOOK IT IN FOR REPAIR AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE, AND THEY NEED REPLACING AFTER A WHILE, SO I REPLACED IT. 4 MONTHS LATER, I'M EXPERIENCING THE SAME IDLE PROBLEMS AS WELL AS THE LUNGING PROBLEMS. I WAS ON THE RAMP GETTING ON TO THE HIGHWAY, AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR STALLED. I COULD NOT ACCELERATE, AND A SEMI WAS GOING TO HIT THE BACK OF MY CAR BECAUSE I GOT OUT THERE IN FRONT OF HIM AND THEN I CAN'T MOVE. SO TO AVOID THE ACCIDENT, I DARTED OF THE HIGHWAY UNTO THE SHOULDER WITH THE DISMAY OF THE TRUCK DRIVER. THE INFORMATION IN THE LEFT CORNER GAVE "PERFORMANCE REDUCED". I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. SO I HAD IT TOWED, AND WITHOUT FINDING ANYTHING THE FIRST DAY, THEY FOUND THAT IT WAS THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE. SO I HAD TO PAY OVER $1000 TO GET THIS FIXED. THE CONTACT OWNS 2000 VOLVO S80. PURCHASED IT UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY CERTIFIED USED CAR PROGRAM FROM CLAYTON VOLVO IN KNOXVILLE TENNESSEE IN APRIL 2001. SEVERAL MONTHS LATER, WHILE THE CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, THE CAR DIED IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION. AFTER TOWING IT TO THE DEALER IT WAS DISCOVERED THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE WASFILLED WITH CARBON. THAT UNIT WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. A COUPLE YEARS LATER, THE CAR AGAIN DIED. THIS TIME IT HAPPENED IN A PARKING LOT. THANKFULLY, IN BOTH CASES IT HAPPENED IN A SAFE SITUATION. AGAIN, THE ETM WAS DETERMINED TO BE THE PROBLEM. BUT, THE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER REFUSED TO RECOGNIZE THAT THE PROBLEM WAS AN ONGOING ISSUE. THIS TIME THE CONTACT WAS FORCED TO PAY NEARLY $1000 FOR REPAIRS. IT WAS THE CONTACT'S UNDERSTANDING THAT INFORMATION WAS BEING COLLECTED ON THIS PROBLEM, SO HE FELT COMPELLED TO ADD THIS COMPLAINT. LAST MONTH, I GOT INTO A CAR ACCIDENT. A FORD ECONOLINE IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION TURNED LEFT WITHOUT SEEING ME AND HIT ME IN THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT WHEEL AND ALL THE WAY TO THE BACK. I BROUGHT MY BRAND NEW 2001 VOLVO S60 BACK TO MY DEALER BILL GRAY VOLVO FOR REPAIR. I GOT MY CAR BACK JUST LAST WEDNESDAY (4/18). THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME EVERYTHING WAS FIXED EXCEPT THE MOLDING ON THE WINDOW. WHILE I WAS DRIVING BACK HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP, I NOTICED THE CAR WAS QUITE A BIT OFF-CENTERED WHEN I WAS ACCELERATING WHICH DIDN'T HAPPENED BEFORE THE ACCIDENT AND THE REPAIR. SO I CALLED BACK THE NEXT MORNING INQUIRING, NOT ONLY DIDN'T THEY WORRIED ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, BUT ALSO ADVISED ME AND MAKE SURE THAT I'M AWARE THAT THIS IS NORMAL FOR FRONT WHEEL DRIVE CARS. DESPITE THE TECHNICIAN'S ADVISE, I WAS STILL VERY WORRIED, SO DUE TO OTHER PROBLEMS THAT DIDN'T HAPPENED BEFORE THE REPAIR , I SCHEDULED TO BRING IT BACK FOR A CHECK ON TUESDAY (4/24). HOWEVER, ON SUNDAY(4/22), AS SOON AS I DROVE OUT FROM MY APARTMENT, I HEARD A CRACK SOUND AND THOUGHT THAT WAS A FLAT TIRE. I STEPPED OUT AND CHECKED THE TIRES, NOTHING WAS WRONG. WHEN I BACKED UP THE CAR, MY FRIENDS SAW PARTS ARE FALLING OUT FROM THE CAR AND THE WHEEL WAS OFF THE AXLE HITTING THE FENDER. THIS ALL HAPPENED ON THE LEFT SIDE OF MY CAR WHICH WAS DAMAGED IN THE ACCIDENT, AND THE DEALER IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE THAT FIXED. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME THIS WAS CAUSED BY BALL JOINT DETACHMENT. HE SAID THIS MIGHT BE AN AFTERMATH OF MY FIRST ACCIDENT. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE POWER STEERING RESERVOIR HOSE CONNECTING CLAMP LEAKED FLUID. THE VEHICLE WAS SEEN BY A DEALER AND CONNECTING CLAMP WAS REPLACED. AFTERWARDS, THE POWER STEERING FLUID CONTINUED TO LEAK AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT DETERMINED THE CLAMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AGAIN.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 VOLVO S80. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER AND THEY REFUSED TO DIAGNOSE OR REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO ANOTHER FORD DEALER THAT WILL PERFORM THE REPAIR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE HAS OCCURRED BEFORE AND SHE BELIEVES THAT THE CAUSE IS THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, WHICH IS CURRENTLY UNDER NHTSA RECALL NUMBER 06V441000. SHE ALSO STATED THAT THE RADIATOR WAS REPLACED AT 28,000 AND 56,000 MILES AND CURRENTLY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AGAIN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE RADIATOR FAILS EVERY 28,000 MILES AND THE ENGINE COOLANT LIGHT ILLUMINATES. THE PURCHASE DATE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 87,000.

WE BEGAN REPORTING PROBLEMS WITH HESITATION AND SURGING IN OUR 2001 S80 T6 SEVERAL YEARS AGO TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT OUR NEAREST DEALER, SILL TERHAR MOTORS IN BROOMFIELD, COLORADO. THEY TRIED REPLACING A TURBO VALVE AND A SOFTWARE UPGRADE THAT WAS AVAILABLE AT THE TIME, AND WE WERE TOLD THAT USING THE HIGHEST OCTANE FUEL WOULD BE NECESSARY IN ORDER TO PREVENT THE HESITATION. THE PROBLEM CONTINUED. GIVEN THE INCONVENIENCE OF THE DEALERS LOCATION AND THAT THEY HAD NOT SEEMED TO BE ABLE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, WE HAD THE VEHICLE SERVICED FOR A WHILE AT AN INDEPENDENT VOLVO MECHANIC. LAST FALL THE EMISSIONS AND CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHTS TURNED ON, AND THEY REPLACED AN OXYGEN SENSOR AND/OR MASS AIR SENSOR. THE WARNING LIGHTS TURNED ON AGAIN, AND THEY RECOMMENDED THAT WE GO TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT THE DEALER. WE LEARNED OF THE "EXTENDED WARRANTY" VOLVO WAS BEGINNING TO OFFER AS A RESULT OF THE PROBLEMS IN THE DESIGN OF THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE. IN EARLY DECEMBER WE LEFT THE VEHICLE WITH THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT SILL TERHAR, AND THEY DID THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE. WITHIN DAYS THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING HORRIBLY AND WAS STALLING IN INTERSECTIONS. SILL TERHAR HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED AND REPORTED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO A HOSE THAT HAD NOT BEEN FASTENED SECURELY. DUE TO TRAVEL DURING THE HOLIDAYS AND THE MULTIPLE SNOWSTORMS IN COLORADO IN LATE DECEMBER, WE DROVE THIS VEHICLE IN EARLY JANUARY AFTER HAVING PUT ONLY ABOUT 100 MILES ON THE VEHICLE SINCE THE TIME THAT IT WAS REPORTEDLY FULLY CLEARED OF PROBLEMS WITH REGARD TO THE ETM, THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT TURNED ON AGAIN. WE RETURNED TO SILL TERHAR, AND THEY SAID THAT THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO A FAULTY RIGHT FRONT OXYGEN SENSOR. THEY WERE CERTAIN THAT THIS WAS UNRELATED TO THE ETM PROBLEM. THAT MOST RECENT WORK COST US $400. WE PICKED UP THE VEHICLE LAST FRIDAY EVENING AND, TODAY, ONLY A FEW DAYS LATER, THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT HAS TURNED ON YET AGAIN. *JB

WELL, WELL - LET'S SEE, I BOUGHT A 2001 VOLVO S-80, T-6 IN FEBRUARY 2005 TO REPLACE MY 1996 740 IL BMW - I THOUGHT I WOULD GET A MORE ECONOMICAL AND SAFE CAR. BOY WAS I WRONG! TO MY DISGUST I PAID ALMOST $20,000 FOR THIS USED CAR AND WITHIN WEEKS IT STARTED ACTING UP. IT TURNED OUT TO BE THE MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR AND THE THROTTLE BODY. I FINALLY - 9 MONTHS AFTER PURCHASING THE CAR - HAVE HAD TO GET IT FIXED - OVER $1200.00. I, LIKE ANOTHER PERSON WHO FILED A COMPLAINT, WAS MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN ON A VERY BUSY ROAD, AND THE CAR DIED WHILE IN THE MIDDLE OF MY TURN. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO PUT IT IN NEUTRAL QUICK ENOUGH AND RESTART IT BEFORE I GOT HIT. THE CAR ALSO SURGES DANGEROUSLY AT STOPS. IF YOU DON'T HAVE YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKE 110%, THE CAR WOULD LURCH FORWARD AND HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF IT. I'M SO DISAPPOINTED IN THIS CAR I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER VOLVO. SO MUCH FOR LOOKING FORWARD TO "ONE DAY PURCHASING THIS SAFE CAR". NOW THAT I HAVE DUMPED LOTS OF MONEY INTO THIS CAR, TAKEN VACATION TIME TO PICK IT UP AND DROP IT OFF, IT WORKS OKAY. THE THROTTLE BODY WAS REPLACED ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO, BUT THE CAR STILL FEELS LIKE ITS NOT GIVING ME 100% - BUT AT LEAST IT ISN'T STALLING OR SURGING. I STILL HAVE MY BMW - THANK GOODNESS. DURING DARKNESS THERE IS NO INDICATION THAT THE NIGHT TIME HEADLAMPS ARE IN THE OFF POSITION (BECAUSE THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS ARE ON AND DAYTIME LAMPS ILLUMINATE THE ROAD TO SOME EXTENT). DT: THE VEHICLE IS A 2001 VOLVO S80. THE CONSUMER'S DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE IN TRAFFIC WHEN IT STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY. THIS WAS BECAUSE THE BANJO FITTING HAD CARBON BUILD UP. THE THROTTLE BODY IS COVERED BY WARRANTY. AND THE CLEANING OF THE BANJO FITTING IS NOT. I PURCHASED VEHICLE 8 MONTHS AGO I NOW HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE FRONT AND BACK SUSPENSION. THE AIR TURNS ON ITS OWN, THE AXLE HAS BROKEN, THE SUNROOF OPENS WHEN IT WANTS TO OPEN, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS TURNED ON ALONG WITH MAINTENANCE LIGHT, MY DOORS WILL UNLOCK THEMSELVES WHEN I LOCK THEM AND THE ALARM WILL ENGAGE, THE LEFT WINDOW DOES NOT WORK , SOMETIMES I CANT UNLOCK THE DOORS HAVE TO UNLOCK WITH MY HAND. MY 2001 VOLVO S80 T6 COST ME AROUND $3,500 IN REPAIRS/MAINTENANCE AFTER PURCHASE IN THE LAST 3 MONTHS. THIS CAR HAS SOMETHING GOING WRONG ONE THING AFTER ANOTHER. TO MENTION SOME: FRONT SWAY-BAR LINKS, TURBO CHARGER DRAIN, BAD ALTERNATOR (THAT CAUSE OTHER ELECTRONICS TO MALFUNCTION I.E. THE VEHICLE'S ENTIRE HEATING SYSTEM), IN-CAR SENSOR FAILURE FOR INTERIOR AIR QUALITY , ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE FAILURE THAT CAUSED ME TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP FOR $190, CATALYTIC CONVERTER FAILURE, OXYGEN SENSOR FAILURE, THE FRONT STRUTS AND MOUNTS NEED TO BE REPLACED, YET. MAINTENANCE WISE, THE 60K MAINTENANCE, WHICH THE DEALERSHIP NEVER MENTIONED THAT IT HAD BEEN COMPLETED ON THIS VEHICLE ( NO PAPER WORK FOR THE VEHICLE WAS PROVIDED TO ME AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE), THE BRAKES WENT BAD IN TWO WEEKS AFTER PURCHASE, THE TIRES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, TOTAL COST: AROUND $2,000. I DON'T KNOW WHAT MORE TO EXPECT TO HAVE GONE WRONG ON THIS VEHICLE. THIS CAR HAS PUT ME THROUGH LOTS OF STRESS, WASTE OF TIME, AND LOSS OF MONEY. I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE FOR $14,000 AND HAS PUT IN ALMOST $3,500 AND IT'S NOT EVEN WORTH $17,000 IN THE MARKET AT THIS POINT. WHILE ON A ROAD TRIP, MY 2001 VOLVO S80 STARTED LURCHING FORWARD AND SPEEDING UP/SLOWING DOWN BY ITSELF. THE CAR WAS IDLING ERRATICALLY AND WOULD STALL OUT. AS I WAS AWAY FROM HOME AND NEEDED TO RETURN SOON, I TOOK MY CAR TO BE CHECKED OUT. I WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED A NEW ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE. I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO HAVE THE CAR FIXED AT A COST OF OVER $800.00. NOW I FIND OUT THAT VOLVO KNEW OF PROBLEMS WITH THIS PARTICULAR PART AND THAT THERE MAY BE A RECALL AND I AM VERY ANGRY THAT I HAD TO PAY TO REPLACE A PART THEY (VOLVO) KNEW WAS DEFECTIVE!!! SURGING IDLE SPEED. CAR LURCHES FORWARD AT TIMES WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP. ON OR ABOUT MAY 3RD, 2005, MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR 2001 VOLVO T6 WHEN SHE SUDDENLY LOST ENGINE PERFORMANCE. SHE WAS TRAVELING ALONG A BUSY INTERSTATE AND SHE MANAGED TO GET THE CAR INTO THE EMERGENCY LANE WHILE HOLDING UP TRAFFIC BEHIND HER. THE FOLLOWING MSG APPEARED ON THE DASH, "ENGINE PERFORMANCE REDUCED". WHEN SHE GOT THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, SHE TURNED THE CAR OFF AND CALLED ME TO INFORM ME THE CAR WAS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. SHE STARTED THE CAR AFTER A FEW MINUTES AND IT PERFORMED OKAY ON THE WAY HOME. AT THIS TIME, I THOUGHT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN A FUEL OR GAS CAP PROBLEM. SHE WAS VERY CLOSE TO HAVING A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. THE NEXT DAY SHE WAS TRAVELING WITH OUR CHILDREN ON A VERY BUSY BYPASS AND THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED. THIS TIME, I MADE A CALL TO THE VOLVO DEALER AND THEY INFORMED ME TO LEAVE THE CAR OFF FOR A MINUTE AND THE COMPUTER WOULD RESET. NOT A GOOD SOLUTION. NEEDLESS TO SAY, SHE HAD TO NAVIGATE THE CAR FROM THE INSIDE LANE TO THE EMERGENCY LANE WHILE TRAVELING NO FASTER THAN 20 MPH. AGAIN, THIS WAS A VERY BUSY BYPASS AND LUCKILY SHE MANAGED TO GET THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. FINALLY, I DROVE THE CAR THE NEXT DAY TO SEE HOW IT PERFORMED FOR ME. AGAIN, THE CAR FAILED (I.E. SLOWED TO 20 MPH ON A 70 MPH INTERSTATE) WHILE I WAS DRIVING. I CALLED THE DEALER AGAIN THE NEXT DAY AND THEY INFORMED ME THEY WOULD NEED TO SEE THE CAR IN ORDER TO DIAGNOSE. I INFORMED THEM I NEEDED RECALL WORK PERFORMED ON AN ELECTRICAL FAN SO THEY COULD CHECK INTO MY "ENGINE PERFORMANCE REDUCED" PROBLEM AT THE SAME TIME. ALL THIS SAID, THE CAR FAILED APPROXIMATELY 8-10 TIMES BEFORE I COULD GET THE CAR TO THE SHOP AND REPAIRED ($933.00). THE PROBLEM PART WAS DETERMINED TO BE AN ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE. LUCKILY, MY WIFE, AS WELL AS MYSELF, WERE ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITHOUT GETTING RAN OVER BY TRAFFIC. THIS PROBLEM DEFINITELY NEEDS THE ATTENTION OF THE NHTSA. MY ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE FAILED ON MY 2001 VOLVO V70 AT APPROXIMATELY 48,000 MILES. I WAS LUCKY THAT PERFORMANCE WAS ONLY REDUCED AND I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO THE DEALER FOR THE APPROXIMATELY $1200 REPAIR, BUT I DID CONSIDER IT TO BE A VERY DANGEROUS FAILURE IN THAT THE CAR APPARENTLY CAN CONVERT INTO A "LIMP HOME" MODE WHICH WOULD REDUCE SPEED TO A MAXIMUM OF ABOUT 20 MPH WITHOUT ANY ADVANCE WARNING, WHICH COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS IN EXPRESSWAY DRIVING, OF WHICH I DO A LOT. 2001 VOLVO S80 SERIES DEVELOPED PROBLEMS WITH THE STEERING AND THE BRAKING SYSTEM.***NO ANSWER REQUIRED***. *MR WHILE EXITING A PARKING LOT, THE VEHICLE CEASED TO OPERATE. THE VEHICLE TOWED AND THE CONSUMER WAS ASSURED THE PROBLEM HAD BEEN RESOLVED, HOWEVER 8 MONTHS LATER THE INCIDENT HAPPENED AGAIN. THE CONSUMER HAD SEVERAL ELECTRICAL REPAIRS DONE ON THE VEHICLE, SUCH AS THE INTERIOR LIGHTS, THE POWER WINDOWS, THE BATTERY WAS DEFECTIVE WHICH HAD TO BE REPLACED TWICE, THE ALARM WOULD GO OFF FOR NO REASON, THE HEAD LIGHT BULBS AND TAIL LIGHT BULBS WERE REPLACED. THE KEY WOULD NOT TURN IN THE IGNITION, THE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED, THERE WAS A FRONT SUSPENSION NOISE WHEN GOING OVER BUMPS. THERE WAS A POWER STEERING LEAK DUE TO A LOOSE HOSE CLAMP.
