AFTER NOTICING A VERY ACUTE SMELL OF GAS I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR INSPECTION. THE MECHANIC ADVISE THAT I HAD A FUEL LEAK IN MY 2004 VOLVO S 80 . THATS COULD HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS PROBLEM AND THAT THE CAR IS NOT DRIVEABLE IN THIS CONDITION.

STRONG ODOR OF GAS OUTSIDE OF CAR. RECALL ON SIMILIAR CARS BUT NOT IN THIS AREA. KNOWN ISSUE BY VOLVO BUT WILL NOT REPAIR AT NO COST AS IT IS OUTSIDE OF THE 10 YEAR EXTENDED WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH CAR DOES NOT HAVE 150000 MILES ON. FIRE HAZARD AND SHOULD BE FOR ALL CARS OF THIS YEAR AND MAKE BUT OFFER LITTLE IF ANY HELP.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO S80. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, THE CONTACT SMELLED FUEL COMING FROM THE GARAGE. UPON CHECKING UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE, THE ODOR BECAME STRONGER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT A FUEL LEAK ORIGINATED FROM THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK. THE FUEL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO S80. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE SMELLED FUEL AROUND THE VEHICLE. UPON INSPECTION, THE CONTACT NOTICED FUEL HAD LEAKED OUT OF THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 19,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

THE CAR IS PUTTING FORTH A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE. THIS WAS FIRST NOTICED A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO BUT WAS PUT DOWN TO HAVING JUST FILLED THE TANK. THE PROBLEM HAS PROGRESSED TO THE POINT WHERE YOU CAN SMELL GAS 20 FEET AWAY FROM THE CAR. WE ARE NOT ALLOWING OUR DAUGHTER TO DRIVE THE CAR AS IT IS AN EXTREME FIRE HAZARD. I HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH ANOTHER S80 IN 2015 WHICH ALSO WASN'T COVERED IN THE RECALL SINCE IT WAS NOT SOLD IN A "HOT CLIMATE". WITH THAT CAR THE FUEL PUMP (WITH DEFECTIVE FLANGE) WAS REPLACED AND THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY. ALTHOUGH I AM NOT CONVINCED THAT HEAT IS THE PROBLEM (RATHER THE DEFECTIVE FLANGE) THE TEMPERATURES IN OUR AREA RANGES FROM 15 IN WINTER TO LOW 100S IN THE SUMMER. THIS IS A PROBLEM WHICH VOLVO HAS ACKNOWLEDGED AND IT CLEARLY MAKES DRIVING THE CAR DANGEROUS IF NOT DEADLY. RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM 09V483000 - VOLVO RECALL #R220.

THE LAST TIME I HAD THE CAR SERVICED THE REPRESENTATIVE AT THE DEALERSHIP SAID THAT THERE WERE ISSUES WITH THE POWER STEERING RESERVOIR. HE SAID THAT THEY HAD APPARENTLY MADE IT OF THE WRONG PLASTIC AND WHEN IT HEATS IT EXPANDS AND WILL LEAK FLUID, POSSIBLY FAILING. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO S80. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN DRIVING OVER A ROAD BUMP, THE STEERING WHEEL BEGIN TO PULL TO THE RIGHT ABNORMALLY. WITHIN MINUTES, THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE POWER STEERING WOULD NEED REPLACING. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THERE WAS A PREVIOUS OPEN STEERING RECALL ON THE VEHICLE (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 04V029000- STEERING: LINKAGES) BUT THE VEHICLE WAS NEVER TAKEN IN FOR REPAIRS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE HAD PURCHASED THE VEHICLE USED AND WAS UNAWARE OF ANY OPEN RECALLS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 99,000.

LATE EVENING ON THE 22ND , OR EARLY MORNING, OF JULY 23RD I RENTED A VOLVO S80 FROM HERTZ CORPORATIO DIA LOCATION AND LATER ON THE MORNING OF THE 23RD DROVE WITH MY FAMILY FROM DENVER TO CARBONDALE ALONG I-70 AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. SHORTLY AFTER ARRIVING IN CARBONDALE MY YOUNGEST SON AND I WENT FROM THE HOUSE AT WHICH WE WERE STAYING TO THE LOCAL 7/11 FOR A FEW SUPPLIES. WHILE IN THE PARKING LOT THE FRONT AXEL, DRIVER''S SIDE, DISCONNECTED FROM THE VEHICLE. HAD THIS HAPPENED A FEW HOURS EARLIER ON THE INTERSTATE I DOUBT THAT I WOULD BE ABLE TO AUTHOR THIS.

I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY WITHIN THE DESIGNATED 70 MILE LIMIT WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL BEGAN TO SHAKE AND THE CAR SPUN OUT OF CONTROL. IT SWERVED TO THE RIGHT AND LEFT AND LUCKILY THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC, OR A TRAGIC ACCIDENT COULD HAVE OCCURRED, SINCE MY TWO CHILDREN WERE IN THE CAR. I LANDED IN A DITCH. THE DRIVING CONDITIONS WERE SUNNY AND THE ROAD WAS CLEAR OF DEBRIS. THE DEALERSHIP REPAIRED A LOOSE GRAVE SHIELD, WHICH THEY SAID WAS CAUSED BY SOMETHING HITTING THE CAR, ALTHOUGH THE ROAD WAS CLEAR OF DEBRIS AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT. I TOLD THEM THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON YOUR SIGHT FOR S80 2004 VOLVOS, BUT THEY SAID MY VIN WASN'T PART OF THAT RECALL. WHILE THEY REPLACED THE GRAVE SHIELD AND COMMENTED THAT NO DAMAGE WAS NOTED THEY SAID THAT SOMETHING HAD "KNOCKED IT LOOSE" AND THAT MAY HAVE CAUSED THE STEERING WHEEL TO SHAKE OUT OF CONTROL. SINCE WHAT HAPPENED WAS RELATED TO THE SHAKY STEERING WHEEL, I AM CONCERNED THAT THE PROBLEM MIGHT REOCCUR AND I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS CAR, EVEN THOUGHT THE VIN IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR TWO KIDS IN OUR 2004 VOLVO S80 ON I-75 WHEN THE VEHICLE JUST COMPLETELY STOPPED OPERATING. SHE COULD NOT GET THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE AS WHEN SHE PRESSED THE GAS PEDAL, THE ENGINE WOULD NOT EVEN REV UP. MY WIFE AN CHILDREN WERE STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSTATE IN A CAR THAT WOULDN'T DRIVE. THE DASH STATED "REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE". SHE CALLED ME ON MY CELL IN A PANIC AS CARS ON I-75 WERE FLYING BY HER AND SWERVING OUT OF HER LANE TO AVOID COLLIDING WITH OUR VEHICLE. I ASKED HER IF SHE HAD TRIED TURNING OFF THE VEHICLE AND RESTARTING IT. THE FIRST TIME SHE TRIED, IT DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. THE SECOND TIME, IT STARTED UP WITHOUT THE "REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE" ON THE DASH BUT IT STATED "CHECK ENGINE" ON DASH. MY WIFE WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE OFF AND GET IT HOME. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP IN OUR CITY AND INFORMED THEM WHAT HAD HAPPENED AND THAT I HAD DONE MY RESEARCH AND THOUGHT THAT IT WAS PROBABLY THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE (ETM) AND THAT IT MIGHT BE UNDER A 10 YR/200,000 MILE WARRANTY. THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME THAT THERE WOULD BE A DIAGNOSTIC FEE TO START. WHEN I GOT THE CAR BACK, THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME THAT I HAD CARBON BUILD UP ON THE THROTTLE PAD AND THAT AFTER CLEANING THIS, THE ETM PASSED ALL OF THE TESTS. THE NEXT DAY, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON AND THE CAR STARTED TO LEAK GAS OUT THE BACK IN HUGE AMOUNTS AFTER I STOPPED TO GET SOME GAS. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO DEALERSHIP AND THEY LOOKED AT IT AND AFTER FIXING IT, INFORMED ME THAT THEY HAD KINKED AN O-RING WHILE PERFORMING A RECALL ON SOMETHING ON THE GAS TANK AND THIS CAUSED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. UPON DRIVING HOME, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON AGAIN. UPON TAKING BACK TO DEALERSHIP, THE DEALERSHIP ADMITTED THAT THEY HAD NOT DONE A DIAGNOSTIC FEE THE FIRST TIME SO THAT HAD NO IDEA IF THE ETM WAS FINE OR NOT. MY 2004 VOLVO S80 HAS STALLED DOZENS OF TIMES OVER THE PAST 2 1/3 YEARS. SOMETIMES IT STALLS WHILE COASTING TO A STOP. IT WILL GENERALLY RESTART AND YOU CAN LIMP HOME. THIS IS A SEVERE INCONVENIENCE, BUT NOT A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. HOWEVER, IT ALSO HAS LOST POWER AND SPUTTERED ALONG AT A VERY LOW SPEED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER REFUSE TO DRIVE THE CAR ON THE HIGHWAY DUE TO THIS PROBLEM. THE CAR HAS BEEN TAKEN TO A VOLVO DEALER 6 TIMES SINCE MAY 2007 FOR THIS PROBLEM. MANY TIMES THE PROBLEMS WAS MIS-DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER AND AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR WAS PERFORMED WHICH DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. IN MAY 2007, THE CAR WAS GIVEN A TUNEUP AND SOFTWARE UPGRADE TO THROTTLE CONTROL MODULE. IN JUNE 2007, THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE (ECM) WAS REPLACED. MY TOTAL COST WAS $1,165 WHILE THE DEALER SUPPLIED THE ECM PART AS A GOODWILL GESTURE. SAME PROBLEM IN MAY 2008. DEALER REPLACED TERMINAL ENDS IN WIRING ON ECM AT A COST OF $215. SAME PROBLEM IN SEPT 2008. DEALER REPLACED THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR FOR $525. SAME PROBLEM IN DEC 2008. DEALER REPLACED WIRING FROM ECM TO THROTTLE ACTUATOR AND COVERED THE COST AS A GOODWILL GESTURE. SAME PROBLEM IN JULY 2009. DEALER REPLACED THE ECM AT A COST $500; PART WAS COVERED AS A GOODWILL GESTURE. THIS APPEARS TO BE THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM COVERED BY NHTSA ACTION NUMBER PE05041 FOR 1999 TO 2001 MODEL YEARS. IN THAT CASE, VOLVO EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO 10 YEARS AND 200,000 MILES FOR THE ECM. THAT APPEARS TO BE AN APPROPRIATE REMEDY FOR 2004 MODEL YEARS AS WELL. *TR

DT: THE CONSUMER OWNS VOLVO S80 2004, SUDDENLY THE TIRE BECAME PARTIALLY SEPARATED FROM THE RIM ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE. THE CONSUMER LOST CONTROL OF VEHICLE. THE CAR CRASHED, THEN ROLLED AND FLIPPED OVER INTO A DITCH UPSIDE DOWN. THE PASSENGER IN THE REAR BEHIND THE DRIVER SUSTAINED INJURIES, INCLUDING HEAD TRAUMA. THE CONSUMER CALLED VOLVO AND REQUESTED THAT AN INVESTIGATOR COME AND CHECK THE CAR. AN INVESTIGATOR CAME, AND INVESTIGATED THE VEHICLE BUT VOLVO WOULD NOT RELEASE ANY INFORMATION TO THE CONSUMER. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE GM REPAIR SHOP. A POLICE REPORT AND PICTURES WERE TAKEN. THE CONSUMER TALKED TO VOLVO, AND THEY SAID THAT THEY CHECKED EVERYTHING AND IT WAS OKAY. THIS MODEL VOLVO USES A SWITCHBLADE KEY, AND DUE TO A DEFECT IN THE KEY, IT DOES NOT LOCK IN THE EXTENDED POSITION WHEN THE KEY IS OPENED. THE LARGE PLASTIC KEY HANDLE DANGLES DOWN BELOW THE IGNITION WHEN DRIVING. ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION, THE DRIVER'S KNEE BUMPED THE KEY FOB AND TURNED OFF THE CAR WHILE IN MOTION. Both of the key fobs I have are broken in that the key won't lock straight out or stay folded into the fob. The weight of the plastic fob alone frequently causes the key to twist backwards if the road is bumpy or uneven, which kills the engine and makes it extremely difficult to steer to safety without power steering. The first time this happened to me I was traveling at 55 mph on a crowded highway but fortunately I was in the rightmost lane, not in a curve, and was approaching an area where I could pull over to safety. I have had to duct tape both keys in the open position to prevent this. The situation is much worse if additional keys or other weight is added to the ring. It is possible to insert a broken key in a way that causes the weight of the fob to hang away from the driver but large road bumps or accidental interference from the driver or passengers can cause it to flip backwards anyway. These incidents are alarming and confusing for the driver, particularly the first time, and could easily cause an accident depending on the conditions. I am not the only person who has experienced this issue, and it will become even more common as these vehicles age.

PURCHASED A 2004 VOLVO S80 IN "MINT CONDITION" FROM A USED CAR DEALERSHIP (GOOD REPUTATION).THREE (3) MONTHS LATER THE TRANSMISSION STARTED THE FAMOUS VOLVO "SLIP, SLIDE, AWAY".. EVERY WEEK OR SO I GET THE "STOP SAFELY COOLANT LEVEL LOW" WARNING ON MY DASH...KEEP IN MIND THE DEALERSHIP HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THESE ISSUES SINCE THE CONDITIONS DIDN'T APPEARED UNTIL 3 MONTHS/50000 MILES AFTER THE PURCHASE. STEERING HAS SOME PLAY AND I'M CONTINUOUSLY RECOVERING THE DIRECTIONAL PATH SLIGHTLY. SHORTLY AFTER I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE I INSTALLED ALL NEW TIRES (MICHELINS) PURCHASED A LIFETIME WHEEL ALIGNMENT, WHICH WAS DONE DURING NEW TIRE INSTALL AND RECENTLY RE-CHECKED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE IGNITERS THAT WERE USED TO TURN ON THE HEADLIGHTS HAD FAILED. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS HAD THEIR OWN IGNITER AND THE DEALER ADVISED THAT BECAUSE THE FAILURE WAS COMMON IN HIS YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL, THE REPAIR WOULD POSSIBLY ONLY LAST FOR TWO YEARS. WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, MY 2004 VOLVO S80 2.5T WILL SUDDENLY LOSE POWER, SURGE FORWARD OR ENTER 'LIMP MODE" WITH A MESSAGE OF "REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE" FOLLOWED BY "ENGINE SERVICE REQUIRED." USING AN OBDII CODE READER I DISCOVERED THAT THESE MESSAGES AND MY ISSUE WERE CAUSED BY A PROBLEM WITHIN THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE (ETM). I TOOK IT INTO A LOCAL VOLVO REPAIR SHOP AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT THIS WAS A THROTTLE BODY ISSUE. IF THIS PROBLEM OCCURS WHILE I AM DRIVING WITHIN THE CITY, IT IS FAIRLY EASY TO PULL OVER TO SAFETY, BUT ON THE FREEWAY, LOSING POWER IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC CAN BE DANGEROUS, AND THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME, CAUSING A NEAR ACCIDENT. THE ISSUE IS RECURRING AND WHILE IT DOES SEEM TO "CLEAR ITSELF" IT HAS RETURNED MULTIPLE TIMES. THERE WAS A DEFECT INVESTIGATION, OPENED JULY 26TH 2005 UNDER NHTSA ACTION NUMBER PE05041 FOR THE EXACT SAME ISSUE, AND EXACT SAME GROUP OF PROBLEMS. THE REPORT FOUND THAT THE ISSUE WAS LIMITED TO S80S MANUFACTURED BETWEEN 1999 AND 2001. I WOULD SUGGEST THAT THIS ISSUE IS NOT LIMITED TO ONLY THOSE MODEL YEARS BUT HAS AFFECTED OTHER YEARS AS WELL. I BASE MY SUGGESTION ON INFORMATION FOUND BY SEARCHING VARIOUS VOLVO OWNER DISCUSSION BOARDS AND FINDING OTHERS THAT HAVE IN FACT BEEN AFFECTED. PLEASE TAKE A LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE... THE SECOND TIME I COMPLAINED THE SERVICE MANAGER DROVE THE CAR AND SAID IT THE WAY THE CAR WAS SUPPOSE TO BE, THE COMPUTER SYSTEM WORKED THAT WAY. I BROUGHT IT BACK IN WITH THE SAME COMPLAINT AND THEY SAID OTHER CARS HAD SIMILAR DIFFICULTIES, AND THEY REPLACED A COMPUTER CHIP. THE PICK-UP WAS A LITTLE BETTER BUT STILL NOT LIKE OTHER CARS.
