SERVICE BRAKES
7 complaints
I am submitting a complaint regarding premature front brake wear on my 2024 GMC Acadia. At approximately 16,000 miles, Sewell Buick GMC of Midland inspected my vehicle and measured the front brake pads at 5 mm. Despite the pads not being at the replacement threshold and the vehicle being safe to drive, the dealer is already recommending brake replacement. The dealer also advised that the brake parts are currently on backorder due to the high volume of repairs needed for the same issue with no estimated time of arrival. I am concerned that requiring brake replacement at such low mileage indicates a potential design, material, or manufacturing issue with the braking system on this model year. I am also concerned about the lack of parts availability should brake wear progress more quickly than expected. The vehicle is driven under normal conditions (no towing, no aggressive driving), and routine maintenance has been followed. Given the low mileage and early wear measurement, this is abnormal for a new vehicle. I am submitting this complaint so NHTSA can track similar reports and determine whether further review or investigation is warranted. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Breaks are squeaking awful. Have had front brakes and rotors replaced which cost $380. Did not fix the problem. Have also saw where a lot of other 2024 gmc Acadia owners are experiencing the same problem.
Nov 15, 2025
The vehicle brake system completely failed. The brake pedal was depressed and several warning lights were illuminated on the dash, yet the vehicle would not come to a complete stop. At the time of failure, the abs light, parking brake light, traction control light, and collision light illuminated on the driver display. Additionally, the dash displayed a message requesting the driver to depress brake pedal hard and to “service ESC”. The brake pedal felt soft and would go all the way towards the floor. The vehicle had very limited braking and would not come to a complete stop. The vehicle was taken to a GM dealership for diagnosis and repair. The dealership confirmed that the brake system had failed and there was inadequate stopping force being produced. The entire master cylinder assembly which includes the hydraulic valve block and electric motor were replaced under warranty. The vehicle had 24,638 miles at the time of failure. Prior to the failure, there were zero indications that there were any issues with the brake system. Fortunately when the brake system failed the vehicle had just backed away from a parking spot and pulled forward towards a stop sign at low speed. The potential concern was that pedestrians, fellow motorists or the driver of the vehicle could have experienced significant injury or death due to the vehicle’s brakes failing.

Since we purchased this vehicle, we have continually had issues with our brakes to include dragging of the front brakes and brakes squealing when they are in use. We have brought the vehicle multiple times to the GMC dealership who is able to replicate the issue, but states that this is normal. I have filed a complaint with the GMC and they said that this is normal even though they admitted to fixing the problem in 2025 models. Per GMC, they will not be stand behind their product unless the national traffic safety issue administration tells them they need to. This is very frustrating as if you do a search online you will find many other consumers with the same vehicle and same issue with no resolution, this is a safety concern that the brakes are not functioning properly as well as the front brakes also caused an issue with a sensor in my car. They fixed the sensor are unable to fix the front brake issue Due to no recalls or issues given to them by the national traffic safety. GMC will not make any fixes as they consider this normal.

Brake sensor warning pops up that says brake pads need to be serviced. Brake pads still have between 80-92% wear left according to the dealership. There is a TSB out for this issue (#N242471431) but GMC refuses to repair at no cost. States that even though my vehicle is within the parameters of the TSB, it is VIN specific.

Apparently many vehicles like mine and including mine have defective radiator hoses or a poor set up with routing causing issues with the hoses. They are developing cracks/leaks causing poor circulation in the cooling system as well as possible engine failure. In speaking to mechanics and reading forum posts, it is evident that this is a large scale issue.

On a highway about an hour from home, my brand new vehicle with 5,318 miles on it, alarmed me to turn off the vehicle. I was going 75 mph. I pulled over and called GMC being that I just had an oil change and thought maybe they possibly didn't reset something. The vehicle said the oil pressure was low. The dealership advised me to check the oil. It was full and clean. The service person advised that I should be able to continue to drive. I then called my husband. Upon starting the vehicle it was making a noise coming from underneath the vehicle. He said do not drive that vehicle and he headed to come get me. We had it towed to a nearby dealership around 6 pm. I called GMC again because the tow truck driver could not figure out how to put the vehicle in neutral. The told us to hold the start button down but do not push the brake. That didn't work. The tow truck driver put plastic slides under the back tires and dragged it onto the tow truck bed. The service center was closed so we were unable to speak to anyone. Days later we were told the engine seized. It took 3 guys to get into the bay. GMC advised the dealership service to take apart the engine in order to investigate the failure. They did and established it was a bearing. It was in the shop for 52 days. I was told the replaced engine was a remanufactured engine by GMC and by the service center more than once. I was very angry. I bought a new vehicle, not a used one. Then I was told it was a new engine. Since I purchased this vehicle I feel like there have been soft truths. I'm not sure what to believe. Upon picking up my repaired vehicle there was not a drop of gas in it and 77 miles added to the mileage. I get that the vehicle needs to be test driven but that seems like a lot. I think new engine, new odometer starting at 0? I bought a new vehicle for safety. I have a 2006 GMC Yukon that has been very reliable which is why we purchased the Acadia. I seriously do not feel safe.

While 2 hours from home driving down the interstate with a full vehicle, the vehicle alarmed and the screen notified "No Oil Pressure, Turn Car Off Now". I pulled over immediately and we had to sit on the edge of the interstate for 45 minutes - a safety hazard for us and the surrounding traffic. The vehicle was towed to the nearest GM dealer, where they assessed the vehicle and advised that this is a known issue for 2024 and 2025 GMC Acadias and Traverses. The vehicle failed to move oil and the engine was seized - a significant safety hazard. After a month, GM has informed us that zero replacement engines are available in the world and there is no timeline for replacement or repair and the vehicle is unusable.

The Vehicles engine siezed at 6,400 miles leaving us stranded on the side of the freeway for 3 hours and GMC is trying to PIN the blame elsewhere. Car has been in the shop for 3 weeks and they are unsure if it will be covered by warranty. The only thing done to the car was an oil change performed at a GMC dealer.

My vehicle is 3 months old with 4650 miles. I was driving on the turnpike and without notice a warning on the dash advised that there was no oil pressure and to pull over. I had the vehicle towed to a dealer out of state since we were 3 hours from home. The dealer called today to advised the car needed a new engine. I asked what was the route cause and they advise the GM did not require the engine to be stripped to find one.

I have had 3 taillights replaced. The first one was the driver's side taillight at Marty's GMC in Kingston MA. The second one was the passenger side taillight at Quirk GMC in Braintree, MA and the third one was the driver's side one again. the vehicle had approximately 28,000 miles when the 3rd taillight was replaced and was purchased in August of 2024. Both dealers stated that it was safe to drive the vehicle with the taillights not operating. The first 2 took approximately one week to get the part and the 3rd one took 4 weeks. I believe that this is a serious safety issue as the vehicle tailgate lights are only visible when directly behind the vehicle.

Rear driver's side brake light/turn signal is out. This is the second time in under a year. Local GMC dealer is not able to replace it within a reasonable amount of time causing a safety issue. This is a well known issue to GMC which is why the part is on back order. No other dealers in my area have the part in stock.
Jul 21, 2025
Left rear tail lamp failed after only 90 miles. It is available for inspection upon request. This tail lamp also contains the left turn signal, so when turning left, the signal flashes faster. The dealership has been notified of the issue and has inspected the issue in question. There were no warning lamps indicating the lamp was not functioning until I turned my left turn signal on. Now, there is a check left tail lamp indicator every time I use my left turn signal. I have been waiting on the replacement part for approximately 6 weeks with no ETA on a resolution, all while GM thinks its ok and safe that I drive my car without a left rear turn signal and brake lamp.

1. The electrical system and driver-assistance/safety features malfunctioned, including intermittent power loss and dashboard system failures. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. 2. The malfunction caused the vehicle to lose power to the braking system while driving, which created a risk of collision. Essential safety features such as power steering, brakes, and warning systems were impacted, putting both myself and other drivers at risk. 3. Yes. The issue has been reproduced and documented by the dealership during multiple service visits and reported to GM customer service. However, the safety claim was denied by GM and I have been advised to continue to drive this unsafe vehicle. 4. The vehicle has been inspected by the authorized dealership and GMC technicians. It has not been inspected by police or insurance representatives at this time. 5. Yes. Warning messages appeared on the dashboard, including system errors and power failure alerts. These issues first appeared around 20,000 miles, and have recurred intermittently since then. I have communicated with the dealership where the car was purchased and GM corporate requesting replacement with a safe and reliable vehicle. To date, I have not received a satisfactory resolution. I have researched and found that other 2024–2025 GMC Acadia owners are experiencing the same issue. This vehicle is unsafe to operate until GM identifies and resolves the defect. Losing control of the brakes constitutes a catastrophic safety failure that makes this vehicle unfit for road use. Immediate investigation and corrective action are necessary to prevent potential accidents or injuries.

when backing up brakes abruptly apply themselves for no reason at all. This happens all the time the dealer says there is no problem with my vehicle, but the rear breaking abruptly keeps on applying.
Sep 06, 2025
When the vehicle is in reverse and you are backing the emergency brake suddenly comes on practically giving you whiplash. This happens randomly and without any obstruction or reason for the emergency brake to come on. It has happened many times. This morning it slammed the emergency brake on 4 times in a row I didn't think I was going to be able to back up as it kept kicking the emergency brake on. Based on what I have seen on the internet many 2024 GMC Acadia owners are having similar problems. GM needs to fix this!

No traffic collision. Preemptive report. Headrest positioned so far forward that head is forced into a downward position. Unable to comfortably maintain eye contact with the road in this position (photo attached). Only remedy is to have headrest positioned so far down that it would cause decapitation in a collision. I was not aware of the decapitation risk when purchasing the vehicle. GM initially stated the dealership should have remedies in the form of alternate parts to be installed at the dealership. Dealership stated that is not the case and they do not have any resolution available.

When backing up and nothing behind car abruptly applies brakes no alerts. This has occurred on multiple occasions and is very scary. This started first week of ownership took to the dealer and was told GM is aware of the issue but no repair available at the time. the car is a year old now and problem is still present I have had to disable the braking feature. The backing emergency braking is a safety feature so pedestrians / children don’t get run over.

While using the super cruise system I am experiencing unexpected braking of the car as it thinks it is about to rear end the vehicle in the right lane it is passing in the left lane. This happened multiple times on a recent highway drive. I am worried I am going to be rear ended by cars following me or the victim of road rage as it appears to other drivers I am brake checking them while in the passing lane. Additionally the adaptive cruise control and super cruise seem to fail to detect the vehicle immediately in front of me and fails to slow down with adaptive cruise control or attempt to change lanes when using super cruise. In both instances I have to manually brake and or change lanes to avoid a rear end collision. While manually driving the vehicle I am also receiving collision alerts when overtaking cars in the right lane while I am passing them in the left. The super cruise was able to identify cars entering the highway from on ramps multiple times and would auto lane change correctly. This leads me to believe the sensors are working but software may not be utilizing correct distance analysis when slamming on brakes as it passes a vehicle. I am scheduling a dealer service call, but feel like they will tell me there are no computer errors. There are no recalls on file. The on-star monitoring is reporting no errors. Seems like a design flaw, logic error that will require a software update.

while backing out of my driveway the auto braking went off 3 times and there is nothing behind me. i took the vehicle to the dealer and they just put all emergency braking systems on alert. my sales person took a gmc acadia up north and the same thing happened to her.

On our drive home from Colorado back to Wyoming. Our 2024 GMC Acadia AT4 had 3,076 miles on the SUV. No problems leading up to this point. Has we crossed the Wyoming boarder emergency light comes off shut vehicle off immediately. Oil pressure low. I pulled over on the side of the road called OnStar for a tow truck. This all took place [XXX] on Sunday. Dealership says the oil pumped failed. GMC needs to issue out a recall for this. I see other people out there deal with the same issue online. It really sucks I put down nice down payment for our family vehicle. Then this happens. We are down a SUV now, I have to pay the taxes on the car $3,239.40 and still making a payment on a car that I can’t drive. On or about I experienced the check engine light on the above vehicle. After checking, the issue has something to do with the low level in the coolant system. I took the vehicle to a Maguire Chevrolet dealership in Grand Island New York. They charged me $200.00 +tax for diagnosis. They found the Radiator hose was leaking and it isn't covered by the warranty or extended warranty. I took the GMC to another shop for repair. They were told by 3 dealerships the part is on back order and they do not know when it will be in. Just to be sure, I called the GMC Dealership in Rome New York where the VFW purchased the vehicle. I was told they were put of stock but there wasn't an issue. That was on 12/24/2025. the salesman said he would call me on Friday to verify the status of the hose needed. as of 12/29/2025 at 13:00Hrs there hasn't been a call back. My feeling is there must be an issue with the hose in question. The should be a recall and GM should repair the leaking part. [XXX] CFO Department of New York VFW. The upper radiator hose, which is part of the vehicle’s engine cooling system, failed prematurely. The component is available for inspection upon request, and documentation of the repair and replacement can also be provided. Failure of the upper radiator hose caused coolant loss, creating a risk of engine overheating and sudden vehicle disablement. This posed/poses a safety risk, particularly if the failure had occurred at highway speeds or in traffic, where an unexpected breakdown could endanger the driver and surrounding vehicles. The issue was confirmed by an authorized GMC dealership, which diagnosed the failed upper radiator hose and performed the replacement. This issue has also been reported by multiple owners of the same model year, indicating a recurring problem. The vehicle and failed component were inspected by an authorized GMC dealership. No inspection by police or insurance representatives was required, as this was a mechanical failure and not the result of an accident. Prior to the failure, symptoms included coolant loss and cooling system concerns, which ultimately required dealership diagnosis. Any warning indicators appeared shortly before the issue was identified, with little to no advance warning before the component required replacement.

I am filing a complaint about my 2024 GMC Acadia AT4, leased brand new from Frank's GMC in August 2024, now with a little over 8,000 miles. The brake pads are worn to 35% life, far below the expected 30,000-70,000 miles, with loud squealing, fluid leakage, and odors. This poses a severe safety risk to my family and others, as compromised brakes could fail. In October 2024, before my 3,000-mile oil change, I reported brake concerns to Frank’s GMC service manager, Javier, who advised waiting. After the November 2024 oil change and tire rotation, only three months after obtaining my vehicle, Javier claimed no issues, despite my prior warnings. The problems worsened, with squealing, leakage, and odors persisting. My March 19, 2025, service appointment was delayed, calls ignored, and follow-ups never occurred. Sales manager Khaled stated that owner Frank confronted Javier about avoiding service issues, yet no action was taken. I contacted ten GMC service departments in PA, CT, and MD; they reported similar AT4 brake issues, some citing total brake failure. I spoke with GM corporate supervisors, who referred me back to the dealer. Frank’s GMC inspections overlooked my concerns. A local police department safety inspection unit confirmed the issues, but no manufacturer or insurance inspections occurred. The vehicle is available for inspection. I urge NHTSA to investigate this premature brake failure and ensure the 2024 Acadia AT4’s safety. The email screenshot I included was sent in April. I contacted the same GMC dealerships that previously reported no issues to check for updates, and they confirmed a change. All of them now report the same problem with brake pads and/or brake failure. This issue is covered under warranty and should be replaced without issue, but dealers are not complying. If overlooked, this could become a national concern

This 2024 GMC Acadia will not back up safely on a rainy day. when moving backward, when it raining the emergency braking continually engage, approximately every two feet. I took it to GM dealer service center, it did the same with them. However, they can't correct the problem and GM does not have a fix. We have experienced multiple recurring issues with our 2024 GMC Acadia that raise significant safety concerns and affect the vehicle’s reliability and overall operation. First, the brake system exhibits persistent squeaking, even at low speeds or light applications. The dealership has inspected the brakes but the noise continues, raising concerns about premature wear or improper brake function. More concerning is the behavior of the automatic braking system while reversing. The system has repeatedly activated the brakes without any obstacle, vehicle, or person behind us. These unexpected braking events have created both physical and psychological stress for occupants and pose a real risk of causing a rear-end collision from another driver who may not anticipate sudden braking. Due to this hazardous condition, we have been forced to deactivate the automatic braking feature entirely, defeating a critical safety system the vehicle is equipped with. Additionally, the engine frequently runs rough during cold start and the initial warm-up period for the first couple of minutes. This rough operation is inconsistent with expected behavior for a new vehicle and has not been fully resolved despite service visits. The TPMS sensors have also been problematic. Several sensors have already been replaced by the dealership, yet we continue to experience intermittent TPMS faults involving at least two wheels. This results in repeated warnings, loss of real-time tire data, and uncertainty about actual tire pressure conditions while driving. We also experience rattling noises from the interior trim near the door seals whenever there is a cross breeze or windy driving conditions. This appears to be a structural or insulation-related issue. We have others, but this space only allows for 2000 characters, and after writing this sentence, there are only 113 characters remaining.

I'd like to report a safety issue related to the frequency of the adaptive cruise control system on my 2024 GMC Acadia. In multiple instances while traveling at highway speeds (55+ mph), the system will brake heavily when no vehicle or impediment is in visible range. This failure can cause safety issues due to sudden braking at highway speeds potentially leading to traffic accidents and/or fatalities. This failure has happened multiple times, but most recently on 7/21/25, 7/25/25, 10/9/25, 10/21/25, 10/22/25, and 10/23/25. The vehicle was taken a GM dealer on 8/1/25, 8/15/25, and 8/26/25 and they dealership failed to diagnose the problem or indicated all systems were working as intended. The vehicle does not provide any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem.

I bought a brand new GMC Acadia at Thompson GMC in Raleigh NC. From day 1 I have been having a issue with the tire pressure sensors disconnecting from the system. Thompson GMC was giving me attitude for bringing it back so many times so I brought it to Leith GMC in Wendell NC for diagnoses. Both shops referred to GM TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) PIT6188 which they both tried the reprogramming with no such luck. I was advised to wait for GM to come up with a fix and refused a loaner for the time unless I paid (GM customer care confirmed I would have to pay up front for a loaner). It is now 6 months later and I am still driving a vehicle where lights still come up on the dashboard and no fix. I get no where with the dealerships and GM customer care (case # 9-14086984106) advises me I have to keep bringing it to the dealership. No one can give me a update on when this will be fixed and I am constantly getting a run around. Please help.

I was driving and making a left turn at a traffic light when all of a sudden, every light lit up on my dashboard. Then the dashboard turned completely black along with the radio screen. When the dashboard went black, I tried to stop by hitting the brakes to pull over. The brake pedal went all the way to the floor, and I had zero brakes. I was able to coast to a dirt shoulder where the vehicle stopped due to friction and gravity. The brakes never worked to aid in stopping the motion of my vehicle. I had my vehicle towed immediately to the dealership where I bought it.

The automatic braking system activates when there is no danger of collision or impact. During heavy rain, backing out of a parking space, with no hazard activating the emergency braking system near your vehicle, the emergency braking system will activate every 2-3 feet driven- sometimes occurring 6-8 times when trying to back out of space. This is a safety hazard because you’re left sitting in a roadway with no control over vehicle. Your chances of being hit by oncoming traffic, because your vehicle stops itself over and over, is high. Not only is the automatic braking jarring, you have to sit in oncoming traffic while the emergency parking brake releases. The emergency braking system will also activate without cause when backing down a hill, even on a sunny and clear day. This poses a danger when trying to parallel park, on a hill, in busy traffic. Have not reported to service center or manufacturer. Seems to be a system sensitivity issue that is a non serviceable issue. Problem occurred when vehicle under 1,000 miles and continues at 5,000 miles.

SUSPENSION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
1 complaint
2024 brand new Acadia Denali trim with 1k miles was brought in to the dealership because of 'popping' and 'grinding' noise when turning, most loudest when turning to and from the right. It was also very much felt on the steering wheel. Dealer took apart the front right strut assembly and said that it was not 'installed' properly, causing the springs to hit the fender everytime the wheels turned. They inspected it said that nothing needed to be replaced, installed it properly, test drove it and determined that it was fixed. Driving home, I sped through potholes and bumps, especially during turns, to really test their repairs. Luckily, the sound was gone, steering was smooth. And I hope it stays that way. Out of curiosity, I took a picture of the strut assembly post Repair You can see the coil is bulging out of place from the strut. This is only in the right side. The pictures show the suspension with wheels fully turned to the right, left, and pointed straight. The picture even shows the part of the fender where the spring made contact with. I communicated in online groups of acadia owners and they said it’s also the same issue, wherein that they experienced the symptoms themselves or the struts look misaligned already. I believe this is a concern GMC should address the soonest as it could lead to road hazards for everyone involved.
