I was under the vehicle changing the oil and heard a loud bang. I investigated the sound and didn't notice anything. After completion of the oil change I got into the driver seat and noticed my rear view mirror was hanging by the wires. It had come loose from the windshield taking a big chunk of glass out of the windshield. It left a gash approximately almost 3/4 of an inch deep by 1.5 inches long by about 3/4 of an inch wide. This seriously degrades the strength and puts any occupants at risk. The windshield can not be repaired and will have to be replaced. Cost of replacement is approximately $413.58.

Recall still has no fix over a year later
Oct 25, 2023
While driving on Sept 11 on I95 a pebble flew up off the roadway and hit my windshield on the left hand side (driver's side) and it immediately began to crack horizontally and went to the middle of the car. If the car is outside in sun/heat the windshield keeps cracking further across the windshield and is now reaching the passenger side of the car. This is a real safety issue. Called glass repair company and the first appointment they could provide was not until Sept 19th.

Windshield cowl continues to buckle from Windshield causing a gap where water can get to engine compartment. Have had it replaced twice now with no resolution. Being that I live in a state with very cold winters if water gets under the gap and then freezes it could potentially Crack Windshield. This needs to be addressed.

A spontaneous crack appeared in the windshield running from the bottom left, near the deicer, into the middle (when looking at the car from the outside). No accident was involved; it just appeared in the morning. Subaru is saying this isn't covered under warranty. There was a class action lawsuit for similar problems in other models manufactured in the same year, but it was settled with only Outback and Legacys included: https://www.windshields.settlementclass.com/

TPMS safety system failure. Vehicle display of tire pressure readings on the dash has changed from displaying tire pressures for each tire to no pressures displayed (pressures are blank; on the Subaru App which also accesses this data, all tires show red/abnormal with dashes displayed) for several weeks now and TPMS error warning light remains illuminated on dash. Manufacturer has suggested I take car to dealer to diagnose at my upfront cost for their defect as the vehicle is out of warranty. A friend with the same car has experienced the same problem, replaced all TPMS sensors at their expense, still having this same problem despite the attempted fix. This safety defect is not being adequately addressed by the manufacturer despite contacting the advocacy department and corporate executive.

I have a Subaru 2019 Impreza. When parked in my drive way on a Los Angeles winter day, I turned on my defroster and my windshield cracked at the bottom center of the glass. I assume this has to be a defect given Subarus are made for more extreme conditions.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The battery dies sporadically when the car has been parked for a short time or a day or two. No telling when it will happen, but suddenly the car will not start. Subaru dealer says there's nothing wrong, but obviously there is. This has happened three times already, once in 25- degree weather with a 15-degree wind chill. I have checked all the lights and keep the headlights turned off, as I don't drive at night. So far this has happened only when the car is parked, but what if it happens when I am driving? Date given below is the third incident. The others were in late January and February.
Mar 06, 2022
Vehicle was purchased new by original owner. Battery died at 5,709 miles and was replaced by dealer. I purchased the vehicle as a CPO. Second battery died at 8,077 miles and was replaced by dealer. Third battery died at 8,836 miles and was replaced by dealer. Old batteries were disposed of by dealerships, surely, and are not available for inspection. Safety concern is chiefly of failure when the vehicle is off, not during driving. Problem has been confirmed at each dealership visit. Note that there are several class-action lawsuits pending against Subaru for prematurely dying batteries. No warning was given by vehicle except for a slightly longer engine start the time before catastrophic draining of battery and failure of engine start. Though anecdotal, non-Subaru technicians feel it's not defective batteries but rather a defective electrical system, specifically the controller area network.

Purchased Impreza Limited 10/31/19. On 1/23/21, car would not start. AAA said battery not good & installed a new battery. On 7/4/21 car would not start; battery jumped by AAA. On 9/10/21 car would not start. AAA said battery not good & installed a new battery again—3rd battery since I purchased car. On 7/22/21 Subaru of Morristown said they checked for parasitic drain, and told me it is “within specs.” They said I don’t drive enough miles. End of July 2021 I (a senior woman) purchased a Battery Tender which I must attach to the battery whenever the car is parked in my garage.

I had my vehicle inspected on 5/3/25 and all 4 break lines had bubbles protruding from the rubber break lines that go from the caliper to the metal lines. A safety recall for the same problem exists for 1 year earlier than my Subaru. It appears that Subaru continues to use defective break lines.
May 08, 2025
Your vehicle inspection has been completed. Unfortunately we found all 4 of your brake lines are swelling and will need to be replaced. The parts are not in stock and will need to be ordered. Until they're replaced we don't recommend to drive the vehicle due to safety concerns.

The brakes on this car squeak constantly. Even after replacing brake pads and rotors the car still squeaks every time the brakes are used. After searching the issue I have found multiple Reddit forums of 2019 Impreza owners complaining of the same issue. I have filed a complaint with Subaru and the dealership I bought the car from (brand new) and they refuse to address this issue. It is extremely concerning to have a car that squeaks constantly as if there is an actual brake issue I would not know it since the car sounds like it has an issue already. If even replacing the rotors and brake pads does not fix this issue, I am concerned that there is a bigger issue at play that may reveal itself later. I ask that Subaru be required to fully look into this issue and correct the brakes for all owners as this is not unique to me and my vehicle.

I was driving in stop and go traffic on the highway for several minutes. Everything worked fine until one moment when I went to press the brake pedal down and the pedal would not move. I used all my strength to push it down for several seconds. It was locked in position. I could not move it all. My car slid into a semi truck in front of me at a very very low speed. After impact, everything worked again and I was able to pull the car to the side of the road. Initially, I believed the truck behind me had pushed my car causing the brake pedal to lock. I contacted the police and we examined my vehicle. There was no damage from the impact on the front of my car and there was no evidence I had been rearended. Two Subaru shops have examined the vehicle. One theory from the first shop is that an object in the road lifted the car off the road and caused the pedal to fail. The other shop has no theories. Neither shop found any issue with the brakes or the pedal and could not recreate the problem. Extensive repairs have been done to correct damage from a large rock in the road. The Subaru shop doing the repairs said the rock damage would not have affected the brakes. The car can be inspected at any time. My family is wary of driving the vehicle. The brake pedal failed once and the issue has yet to be explained to our satisfaction.

While driving on highway, knee contacted key causing the ignition to turn off engine. Car began to decelerate. While care was still in drive, turned ignition switch on and engine returned.
Jul 16, 2022
When driving the vehicle the engine was not getting enough power and it was shifting oddly. I took it in and was told there was excessive carbon buildup on the heads, and there is not a good fix for the problem. Without having the engine torn apart this could of caused the car to not speed up properly or the engine to malfunction while driving the vehicle. This could have caused serious injuries to me or others on the road if the problem would not have been addressed. The vehicle was taken to the Subaru dealership, where the engine had to be taken apart and the heads had to be machined to get the carbon off. I was also told there was no preventative maintenance to avoid this problem. There were no warning lamps, lights, or other warnings to notify me of the problem other than the engine not having normal power when over 2000 RPM. It has also taken the dealership almost 3 months and counting to find and address the issue.

AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY IN AN SIDE IMPACT ACCIDENT
Oct 30, 2023
Crash: 1

On May 8th of this year, my fiancé were involved in a rear end collision. That morning, the Hyundai Tucson in front of us stopped short and we ran into the back of it doing around 35 an hour, and ended up with our vehicle (Subaru Impreza) being totaled. I’d like to provide pictures to show the impact, as even car experts have been surprised that the airbags didn’t deploy. As it turns out, a sedan hitting into the back of an SUV means that the airbag sensors may be untouched (because they’re too low) and therefore, airbags will not deploy, even if the accident severe. To me, that is a defect in the design and should be reconsidered going forward. My fiancé broke his foot , which caused him to be out of work for at least 4 months and I got whiplash.

Description of the Problem: On or about [XXX], my 2019 Subaru Impreza experienced a sudden engine failure. The check engine light illuminated, and the engine shut off. Specifically, the check engine light came on approximately two minutes into the drive, and the engine shut off within 30 seconds of the light appearing. The vehicle was taken to Albany Subaru in Albany, CA, where a technician diagnosed the issue as a blown 15 amp ignition fuse and a damaged ignition coil (#4). Albany Subaru is recommending replacement of the spark plugs, coil packs, and the fuse. Albany Subaru has stated that "Subaru sent the recall out due to defective coil packs, and had the new updated coil packs installed. My tech is recommending to replace the coil packs due to the fuse blowing out and shorting out the current coil packs. The #4 coil was found damaged during the inspection." Connection to Recall: I am concerned that this current failure is related to the original defect addressed by Recall 21V264000. My vehicle had the recall service performed on November 14, 2019, to replace the ignition coils. It appears that the replacement coils, or an issue related to the recall repair, may have failed, leading to the blown fuse and further coil damage. I have asked the service technician at Albany Subaru to specifically determine if the current failure is in any way related to the original defect or the replacement parts installed under the recall. Safety Concern: This sudden engine failure poses a significant safety risk. A loss of engine power while driving can lead to a crash, especially at higher speeds or in traffic. In my experience owning many vehicles, I have never encountered issues with ignition coils, nor have I experienced this frequency of recalls. Vehicle Information: • Year: 2019 • Make: Subaru • Model: Impreza • VIN: [XXX] • Mileage: 59,784 miles Recall Information: • NHTSA Recall Number: 21V264000, Service date: Nov 14, 2019 INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Power button no longer works. Started about a year ago, then randomly seemed to of temporarily resolved itself until a couple of months ago. Head unit is now 100% nonfunctional and constantly reboots. No warnings when first occurred. Issue has been confirmed by independent service center. Subaru is aware of a specific set of year/model/makes that start to make a sound coming from the drive shaft center bearing in cold weather. Unnatural wear occurs on the bearing but the only remedy is to replace the entire drive shaft which is a really costly repair for something that is a structural design issue. There is a service bulletin for it: [XXX] It seems unfair that this is a repair the customer should take on when a drive shaft should likely survive the lifetime of a vehicle. This should be a recall. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Rear wheel bearing premature wear. Originally installed wheel bearings were replaced, under warranty, at 44,137 miles. Same bearings then had to be replaced again at 62,486 miles. Both replacements were done by Beardmore Subaru in Nebraska. A failed wheel bearing at high speed could result in a catastrophic accident, and requiring replacement at these low mileage levels is indicative of poor design or substandard parts.

WHEN SHIFTING QUICKLY INTO 4TH GEAR ON THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION AT HIGHER RPM'S (ABOVE 3000), THE GEAR GRINDS. IF YOU SHIFT SLOWLY, IT DOESN'T. IT SEEMS TO BE ONLY THE 4TH GEAR DOING THIS. I AM ALSO A PROFESSIONAL TRUCK DRIVER, SO I KNOW HOW TO PROPERLY DRIVE A STICK SHIFT. THE RPM HANG IS VERY ANNOYING AND COULD POTENTIALLY BE THE PROBLEM OF THE 5SPEED TRANSMISSION.

STEERING
3 complaints
Vehicle sways significantly and continuously left and right in lane at highway speeds, including in low or no wind conditions, since the car was new. This happens regardless of whether eyesight/lane keep assist is enabled or not, and all tire pressures are regularly monitored and at manufacturer recommended levels. Changing tires from the OEM Continental Pro Contact to Michelin CrossClimate 2, while maintaining OEM wheels and 205/55R16 tire size, has not impacted the car's behavior. This weaving occurs at speeds of 50-70 mph on the highway, including on straight, smooth road. Swaying does not disappear with absence of adjacent vehicles influencing air turbulence. Neighboring vehicle air wakes will cause significant additional pushing of the car to the opposite side of the lane. The steering feel of this car on the highway is extremely "floaty" and unsettling. It is challenging to maintain lane with no surrounding cars, and it is extremely dangerous when passing vehicles.
Sep 04, 2024
The power steering pump on this car makes it feel like it is floating on the road at highway speeds. The tires are like new and have the correct amount of air pressure. As someone familiar with power steering pumps, this behavior is consistent with a pump that is either delivering too much fluid or too little during acceleration. It is a dangerous situation since it gives the driver the impression that the car is losing contact with the road.

The cowl that fills the gap between the bottom of the windshield and the hood is defective and warps from the heat of the engine. This warping leaves a huge gap that exposes the bottom of the windshield and allows debris and water under the hood of the car. I was told this was a known issue with multiple Subaru models. The auto glass specialist I was sent to did not have a fix other than replacing it whenever it warps, which is prohibitively expensive when it only lasts about a year.

I attempted to get a safety recall (headlamp assembly defect) addressed at my local Subaru dealership. The vehicle is still under warranty, and I was told I may be able to get a loaner or rental. However, when I arrived, I was informed that the dealership only has 9 loaners and does not offer rental coverage at all, even for warranty customers. I had already spoken to someone about my need for a rental due to my class schedule and was led to believe this could be arranged. I drove down there, took time out of my day, and missed class — only to be turned away with no solution. Subaru’s recall notice acknowledges the increased risk of a crash due to poor visibility and glare. My vehicle remains unfixed and unsafe to drive, and I was left with no support despite my warranty and a safety recall. Subaru has not made it reasonably possible for me to address this recall. If an accident occurs while I wait for a proper resolution, I will hold them responsible. I am submitting this complaint to formally document my experience and push for accountability.

SUSPENSION
1 complaint
The front suspension has been broken since I purchased the vehicle with 50,000 miles on it. This has always been a safety concern for this vehicle yet I see no recalls for it. This puts my safety at risk as there is a metal clunking sound when turning the wheel and the tire rod can break from the faulty parts used for the vehicle. The vehicle’s front suspension was checked by a car repair company that was changing my brake pads at the time and saw that there was a dire issue with the vehicle that could put my life at risk. I have not had any car accidents or any other issues that could have caused this, meaning it is faulty manufacturing on Subaru’s part. There are no warning lights for the suspension, there is no way to know if you have a suspension issue unless you get the vehicle checked, or in my case can hear metal clunking sounds as the wheel is moved left or right while turning. This issue has been seen by many other owners of the same vehicle make, model and year but there has been no effort to fix this safety issue.

Three engine check lights due to rodent damage within two weeks, even when I first bought the car in South Florida it had damage due to rodents and that when I first found out they use soy for the wires, I had thought the dealership I got it from had replaced it all but no. Fast forward 2-3 years later in a different state I had gotten the first engine check light and thought it was due to bad repairs from the place I bought it from, I had thought after the first repair they got rid of the soy wiring since it was expensive but then I happened a second time 140 miles after I fixed the first one. It was then on that I realized these were recent damage and not old so I decided to buy some things to deter rodents since it’s cold now. And now comes to the third time it gets damaged after snowing and melting a little. I haven’t even driven more than 10 miles and I already have to spend more on repairs. I might even have to get rid of the car altogether if this keeps happening. This damage means cruise control is off due to the car now being in a safe mode and also it cannot tell how hot or cold it is so overall running of the car is gonna be worse off. I’ve put noise/ light devices in the engine bay and also mint pouches made to deter mice and such and still had issues

When you put in reverse my 2019 Subaru Impreza Sport, the control display flashes green and is distorted. It is very difficult to detect an obstruction or a child when backing up. Recently we bumped a pedestrian. This Is A Safety Issue! The condition was observed at the Orlando Subaru dealer. Their solution is to replace the whole radio control unit at a cost of $1341. We ordered it to not gamble on safety.

This is my first car and im completely disappointed I purchased it bc of safety. My car battery keeps dying I purchased my car in 2019 and since then i have changed it 4 times. I keep taking it to the dealer and telling them is a parasitic drainage and nothing yet. On top of that the recall for the headlights over a year and nothing. Im never buying a subaru again!

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
1 complaint
While slowly pulling into a parking slot in a Wal-Mart parking lot, the car experienced an abrupt acceleration causing it to lurch forward at full throttle and it struck a parked vehicle in the next space. The accelerator pedal was not depressed. Upon investigation I discovered that there have been many reported incidents of this behavior with Subaru Imprezas, Foresters, Outbacks and Legacy sedans, engendering at least two lawsuits. My vehicle starts to shake and the engine acts like it is going to die when I hit around 50-60 mph. I cannot floor it and the vehicle will not let me go any faster then 60mph without it acting like there’s no fuel getting to the engine or something in that sense

The contact owns a 2019 Subaru Impreza equipped with a Thule Bike Carrier Part Number: SOA567B020 as well as Thule roof cross bars . After his first two uses of his roof rack, which were a 10 mile trip and then a 400 mile trip, he noticed one of the two bolts connecting the front of the roof rack to the front roof cross bar had failed . A weld to attach the head of the bolt to the body of the bolt (i.e., Part# 753-0242-06) failed and the head separated from the body of the bolt . This failure of one bolt made the connection by the front roof rack assembly unit to the front roof cross bar loose, which resulted in the entire bike rook rack being only loosely connected to the roof cross bars and unstable. The manufacturer repeatedly failed to address the report of this defect in email exchanges with the contact, although the manufacturer eventually refunded the purchase price to the contact . The contact retained the defective bolt and roof rack.

ON OR ABOUT JULY 17, 2020, I WAS TRAVELING ON AN INTERSTATE AT APPROXIMATELY 63 MPH WHEN I EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN LOSS OF AIR PRESSURE IN RIGHT FRONT TIRE. THERE WAS NO WARNING AND NOTHING ON MY DASH INDICATED THAT PRESSURE WAS LOW AT ANY TIRE PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. I ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, BUT WAS ABLE TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND GET TO THE BREAKDOWN LANE. THE TIRE LOST ALL AIR PRESSURE AND THE RIM HIT THE PAVEMENT DESTROYING THE RIM. THE TIRE AND RIM WERE REPLACED BY THE DEALER THAT DAY. THE TIRE WAS A CONTINENTAL PROCONTACT TX 205/55R16 89V. DOT A3T2 WC39 2919.

DUE TO THE ECO FRIENDLY SOY BASE PARTS IN SUBARU VEHICLES, WE HAVE FALLEN VICTIM TO SQUIRRELS CHEWING ON THE WIRES UNDERNEATH THE HOOD CAUSING EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE WITHIN 6 MONTHS. SUBARU STATED THIS WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AND WE HAVE BEEN LEFT WITH THE BURDEN OF THE COST. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THAT SOMEONE HAS REPORTED SUCH A PROBLEM, AS A CLASS ACTION WAS FILED 11/2017 IN HAWAII REPORTING THE SAME ISSUES WITH RODENTS AND SUBARU'S SOY BASED PARTS.

AFTER OWNING THE CAR FOR A MONTH, I NOTICED THE HOOD HAD BECOME UNEVEN WHERE IT MEETS THE FRONT END. I ALSO BEGAN TO NOTICE A WIDER GAP BETWEEN THE HOOD AND THE RIGHT FENDER THAN ON THE LEFT SIDE. THIS GAP HAS WIDENED. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO ALBANY SUBARU, THE SERVICE MANAGER MADE SOME ADJUSTMENTS THAT MADE MINIMAL IMPROVEMENTS TO THE HOOD WHERE IT MEETS THE FRONT END, THOUGH IT IS STILL UNEVEN. THE RUBBER GASKET STILL DOESN'T FILL THE GAP. THIS MADE THE GAP BETWEEN THE RIGHT FENDER AND HOOD EVEN WIDER. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO ALBANY SUBARU. THE SERVICE MANAGER RAISED THE HOOD PAD ON ONE SIDE AND LOWERED IT ALL THE WAY ON THE OTHER SIDE AND DOCUMENTED THE CAR IS WITHIN SUBARU SPECS. I CONTACTED SUBARU. THEY WANT ME TO TAKE THE CAR TO ANOTHER DEALER FOR A SECOND OPINION. I AM WAITING FOR THE SECOND DEALER TO CALL ME BACK TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT. I HAVE ALREADY SENT SUBARU PHOTOS OF THE PROBLEMS AND MY CONCERN THAT THE GAP IS CONTINUING TO GET WIDER AS I DRIVE. THE OTHER ISSUE IS THE STEERING. THERE HAVE BEEN FOUR TIMES WHERE THE STEERING SEEMS TO MOMENTARILY DISAPPEAR. BY THIS I MEAN I GET THE FEELING THE STEERING WHEEL IS COMPLETELY LOOSE, NO NORMAL TENSION WHILE HOLDING THE STEERING WHEEL STRAIGHT. BY THE TIME I CAN REACT, THE NORMAL TENSION RETURNS TO THE STEERING WHEEL. THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME THIS IS THE LANE DRIFT MONITORING OF THE CAR. I TOLD HIM I EXPERIENCE A QUICK VIBRATION OF THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN DRIFTING LANES, NOT A COMPLETE LOSS OF STEERING. HE IGNORED ME AND SAID THE STEERING IS FINE. NHTSA WEB SITE ONLY LET ME UPLOAD ONE PHOTO. I HAVE FIVE PHOTOS TO SHOW MEASUREMENTS ON ALL SIDES OF THE HOOD GAPS
