TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD JERK ABNORMALLY WITH THE ILLUMINATION OF THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LAMP. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO ADVISED THAT THE MASS FLOW AIR SENSOR FAILED. THE CONTACT HAD RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF A VOLUNTARY MANUFACTURERS RECALL IN REGARDS TO PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER THE RECALL. LESS THAN FOUR YEARS LATER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS THEN CONTACTED YET THEY OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 42,000. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THE FAILURE AS THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND ADVISED HAVING IT REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 82,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

WHILE DRIVING OUR 2000 VW JETTA THE TIMING BELT THAT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE SERVICED UNTIL 105K SNAPPED, DESTROYING THE ENGINE AND LEAVING THE CAR PARALYZED ON THE HIGHWAY. ALL REQUIRED MAINTENANCE WAS DONE AT DEALER FOR THIS CAR. IT HAD 89K WHEN THE CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OCCURRED. *TR

MY 2000 JETTA GLS VR6 HAS ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS LOST POWER WHEN DRIVING AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. ON ALL THREE OCCASIONS, I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE VW SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO HAVE IT DIAGNOSED AS A FAULTY COIL PACK AND WIRES. EACH TIME I REPLACED PAYING OVER $1000 OUT OF MY OWN POCKET, FOR WHAT IS CLEARLY A DEFECTIVE PART WITH THE VW COIL PACKS IN VR6 ENGINES. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE SPARK PLUGS WERE CHANGED ON THE VEHICLE. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY NOTICED THAT THE SIXTH VALVE WAS LOSING PRESSURE. THE MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDED THAT THE ENGINE BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT FEELS THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD REPLACE THE ENGINE BECAUSE IT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WITH THE NEW ENGINE WAS 2,000 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WITH THE OLD ENGINE WAS 188,000. I HAVE A 2000 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA AND WITHIN THE PAST 2 MONTHS MY DRIVER SIDE WINDOW JUST FELL DOWN INTO THE DOOR. THERE'S LITTLE PLASTIC CLIPS THAT HOLD THE WINDOW ON TRACK AND THEY BROKE. BUT YOU CANT BUY THOSE CLIPS, YOU HAVE TO BUY THE WHOLE DOOR ASSEMBLY. 2ND YESTERDAY, OCT 6TH, MY PASSENGER WINDOW JUST FELL DOWN INTO THE DOOR, AND AGAIN, THE SAME THING. I SEARCH ALOT OF VW RELATED FORUMS WHERE PEOPLE AROUND THE NATION HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS AND HAVE FILE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS WITH VW AND COMPLAINTS WITH CONSUMER AFFAIRS. WHY HASN'T VW ISSUED A RECALL FOR THESE CLIPS? I CANT AFFORD THE OUTRAGEOUS PRICES TO HAVE BOTH OF MY WINDOWS FIXED SO I HAVE THEM TAPED WITH DUCK TAPE TO HOLD THEM UP. TODAY I TOOK MY DAUGHTERS 2000 JETTA IN FOR SERVICE. I HAVE HAD MANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR AND I TAKE IT TO VW DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE AND RECALLS. MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING AND THE AIR BAG LIGHT SUDDENLY CAME ON. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE VW DEALERSHIP AND WAS CHARGED ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR THE COMPUTERIZED CHECK-UP. I WAS THEN INFORMED THAT THERE WAS A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE DRIVERS'' SIDE AIR BAG. THE MECHANIC SAID THAT THE PROBLEM COULD CONSIST OF ANYTHING FROM AN ELECTRICAL SHORT TO THAT OF A MALFUNCTIONING AIR BAG UNIT. HE STATED THAT THE PRICE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WOULD BE WELL OVER A THOUSAND DOLLARS. HE ALSO SAID THAT SINCE THE DRIVERS SIDE AIR BAG WAS MALFUNCTIONING THE CARS INTERNAL COMPUTER HAD SHUT OFF ALL THE OTHER AIR BAGS WITHIN THE CAR. THE CAR IS IN THE DEALERSHIP RIGHT NOW AWAITING SERVICE. YOU ARE THE THIRD PERSON I HAVE TALKED TO AT THE DEALERSHIP REGARDING THIS SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE YET TO RECEIVE ANY ANSWERS. SAFETY IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS IN CARS TODAY AND THAT IS WHY I PURCHASED THIS JETTA. YOUR ADVERTISEMENTS STATE THAT THIS CAR IS ONE OF THE SAFEST ON THE MARKET. IT IS DEFINITELY NOT A SAFE CAR NOW AND VW COMPANY REFUSES TO HELP ME FIX A PROBLEM THAT SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN AN ISSUE. I HAVE TALKED TO SEVERAL MECHANICS AND THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A PROBLEM. ALL OF THEM AGREED THAT THE DEALERSHIP SHOULD FIX THE PROBLEM AND ABSORB THE PRICE WITH NO QUESTIONS ASKED. MY 2000 JETTA VR6 HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING COIL ISSUES FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS WHENEVER THE WEATHER IS WET/RAINY AND HIGH HUMIDITY. IF THE CAR SITS IDLE FOR 6-8 HOURS WITH A COLD ENGINE IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO START THE ENGINE WITHOUT CONSTANT SPUTTERING. THERE IS NO POWER IN ACCELERATION UNTIL THE ENGINE WARMS UP COMPLETELY. DURING THIS TIME THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FLASHES AND REMAINS ON UNTIL THE NEXT TIME I START UP THE ENGINE OR UNTIL THE WEATHER BECOMES LESS HUMID. THIS ALSO OCCURS WHEN DRIVING THRU A PUDDLE OF WATER CAUSING IT TO SPLASH THE COIL AREA. I REPLACED THE IGNITION WIRES TO THE TUNE OF $145 BUT THAT DID NOT ALLEVIATE THE PROBLEM. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE BRAKE LIGHT WOULD ILLUMINATE INTERMITTENTLY. THE DEALER CHANGED THE BULB. AFTERWARDS, SHE WAS PULLED OVER BY A POLICE OFFICER WHO POINTED OUT THE MALFUNCTIONING BRAKE LIGHT. SHE PROVIDED THE OFFICER WITH THE PAPERWORK OF HER RECENT REPAIR. THE OFFICER INSTRUCTED HER TO TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER. THE CONTACT CHECKED THE BULB AND REALIZED THAT IT WORKED. SHE PURCHASED NEW BULBS, BUT THEY WOULD NOT ILLUMINATE. SHE ASSUMED THAT THE ISSUE WAS DUE TO THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. ON AUGUST 12, 2008, THE CONTACT HAD HER DAUGHTER FOLLOW HER TO A DEALER 30 MILES AWAY. HER DAUGHTER WAS INSTRUCTED TO SOUND THE HORN EVERYTIME HER BRAKE LIGHT MALFUNCTIONED. HER DAUGHTER SOUNDED THE HORN A TOTAL OF 13 TIMES ON THE 30 MILE TRIP TO THE DEALER. WHEN SHE ARRIVED AT THE DEALER, THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY FAILURES WITH THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 125,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 113,000.

BOUGHT USED VW FROM A DEALER. DEALER WAS DOING BRAKES/INSPECTION, AND ON PICKING UP THE VEHICLE STUNK OF BURNT ELECTRIC SMELL. VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. THIS WAS AROUND 50,000 MILES. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINS ON ALTHOUGH NUMEROUS CODES CONTINUE TO COME UP NOTHING IS FOUND. DEALER SENT CAR TO AUTHORIZED VW DEALER TO FIX - LIGHT STILL REMAINS ON. AROUND 87,000 MILES CAR BEGAN TO DRAIN BATTERY AND WOULD NOT START EVEN AFTER NEW BATTERY. TOOK TO AUTHORIZED VW CAR SHOP. SEEMS SOMETHING WITH FUSES/ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. AGAIN MANY CODES BUT NOTHING SEEMS WRONG, ACCEPT FOR THE WHOLE NOT STARTING. IGNITION SWITCH WAS REPLACED - LIGHT STILL ON. LIGHTER SOCKET NO LONGER WORKS. CLUTCH PROBLEMS ON JETTA 2000. CLUTCH FAILED ON ME WHY DRIVING ON THE FL TURNPIKE ON SATURDAY 14, 2006. I WAS AT THE TOLL PLAZA AND WHEN I LEFT MY CAR WENT INTO GEAR AS NORMAL, WHEN I PUT IT IN 4TH GEAR I HEARD THE ENGINE REV HIGH BUT MY CAR BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN. I COASTED OFF THE FIRST EXIT I SAW AND LUCKILY, KEPT COASTING RIGHT INTO AN APARTMENT COMPLEX. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP I BOUGHT THE CAR FROM AND THEY SENT OUT A TOW COMPANY TO PICK MY CAR UP. ON MONDAY, MAY 15, 2006 I RECEIVED A PHONE CALL FROM ESSERMAN INTERNATIONAL AND I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE DEPT THAT I HAD SOMEHOW ACTIVATED THE ANTI-THEFT ON MY CAR AND THEY HAD DISABLED IT AND IT WAS FIXED. WHEN I WENT TO PICK UP MY CAR, I WAS TOLD THAT MY CAR WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE BECAUSE WHEN THEY TOOK MY CAR TO GET WASHED THE CLUTCH FAILED AGAIN. I WAS TOLD IT WAS EITHER THE TRANSMISSION OR THE CLUTCH. TURNS OUT THEY ARE CHARGING ME 1800 DOLLARS BECAUSE THE CLUTCH NEEDS TO REPLACED, WHICH IS NOT COVERED UNDER THEIR WARRANTY. *JB

2000 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA VR6 WAS IN THE SHOP FOR NEW TIRES AROUND 12/7 - AN ALIGNMENT TEST WAS PERFORMED. THE CAR HAD ABOUT 65000 MILES. IT WAS PURCHASED AS A CERTIFIED USED VEHICLE AT ABOUT 20000 FROM VOLKSWAGEN AND WAS RECENTLY OUT OF WARRANTY. NOTHING UNUSUAL AROSE DURING THIS WORK. THE CAR BEHAVED NORMALLY DRIVING HOME, AS IT HAD FOR YEARS PRIOR. ONE DAY LATER, THE CLUTCH ON THE VEHICLE FAILED SUDDENLY. FORTUNATELY, THE FAILURE WAS FIRST NOTICED BACKING OUT OF A DRIVEWAY AND THERE WAS NO HAZARD. THE CAR WAS JUST BARELY DRIVABLE, AND LIMPED TO THE SHOP. I WAS TOLD BY THE MECHANIC THAT THE PART SHOULD HAVE LASTED FOR AT LEAST 100K MILES, AND THAT THE CLUTCH PARTS "FELL APART IN PIECES" ON OPENING THE CLUTCH. HE DESCRIBED IT AS A DANGEROUS, POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC, FAILURE. COST TO REPAIR WAS $900. DID NOT TAKE THE CAR TO VW BECAUSE OF THE VERY HIGH COST OF POST-WARRANTY REPAIRS. MY WIFE AND I (SOLE DRIVERS) BOTH HAVE LONG EXPERIENCE DRIVING STICK SHIFT VEHICLES AND HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED CLUTCH FAILURES ON PRIOR STICK SHIFT VEHICLES. I HAVE PREVIOUSLY HAD THE CLUTCH GO OUT ABOUT THE SAME TIME ON A '95 JETTA III GLS. I SUSPECT THE PART IS OF POOR QUALITY. *JB

THE CAR TRANSMISSION STALLED ABOUT 4 TIMES. EACH TIME (4 TIME) I TOOK THE CAR TO THE VW DEALERSHIP AND THEY COULD NOT IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM. THEN THE CAR BROKE DOWN. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE VW DEALERSHIP THEN THE DEALERSHIP IDENTIFIED IT AS A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. THE COST TO REPAIR THE CAR IS $4000. ALSO, NO OTHER DEALERSHIP OR AUTO REPAIR SHOP HAS SERVICED THIS CAR EXCEPT MILLER VW. *NM

MY FIRST AND SECOND GEARS HAVE BEEN SPORADICALLY GRINDING EVER SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR. THREE TIMES THEY REFUSED TO FIX IT BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T HEARD IT. FOURTH TIME THEY HEARD IT, BUT WOULDN'T FIX IT BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T HEAR IT WHEN I RETURNED FOR THE SERVICE. *MR

I HAVE A 2000 VW JETTA TDI THAT I PURCHASED NEW. THE CLUTCH STARTED SLIPPING AND HAD TO BE REPLACED AT 51,203 MILES. ACCORDING TO TOM SAPELAK, THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE VW DEALER, THERE IS A RUBBER PIECE (MASS DAMPENER?) BETWEEN THE TWO PLATES OF THE FLYWHEEL. ON MY FLYWHEEL, THIS PIECE HAD 2.5" OF MOVEMENT, BUT THE SPECS INDICATED THAT IT SHOULD ONLY MOVE .1 MM. EVEN THOUGH THE OWNERS MANUAL INDICATES THAT THE 100,000 MILE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY FOR THIS VEHICLE WAS SUPPOSED TO COVER THE FLYWHEEL, I WAS TOLD THAT THIS FAILURE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. I HAD TO PAY $1381.08 FOR A NEW CLUTCH KIT (CLUTCH, FLYWHEEL, CLUTCH RELEASE BEARING) AND THE LABOR TO REPLACE IT. I DO NOT BELIVE THAT THIS FAILURE COULD HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY DRIVING HABITS. I HAD A 1985 VW GOLF DIESEL THAT HAD OVER 130,000 MILES WHEN I SOLD IT, AND I NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE CLUTCH IN THAT VEHICLE. MY HUSBAND HAD A 1996 VW JETTA TURBODIESEL THAT HAD OVER 238,000 MILES ON IT WHEN WE SOLD IT, AND WE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE CLUTCH IN THAT VEHICLE EITHER. MY HUSBAND AND I ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT DRIVE MY CAR AND WE ARE NOT "HARD" ON CLUTCHES.*AK

IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY A SOUND OF AIR PRESSURE BEING RELEASED. IF YOU PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL AFTER THE AIR IS RELEASED, THE PEDAL WILL RETURN TO REST AND THE BRAKES WILL FREE UP. NO EXISTING DEALER RECALLS AND VW (AND VW SERVICE DEPARTMENTS) HAVE NO RECORD OF THIS BEING A COMMON PROBLEM. MY LOCAL VW SPECIALTY REPAIR SHOP SAYS THIS IS COMMON ON 2000 JETTA TDI'S. FIRST WE WOULD LIKE TO START BY SAYING WE LOVE THIS CAR, WE ARE AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE LOYAL VW CUSTOMERS. THERE SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE TENSIONER ON THE REAR BRAKE PADS. WE HAD THE TENSIONER FALL OFF CAUSING THE RIGHT REAR BRAKE TO CLUNK AND THE BRAKES TO BE TOUCHY TO THE POINT WHERE IT WAS SCARY. WE DISCOVERED THIS WHEN WE DECIDED TO PUT NEW PADS ON BECAUSE THE LOCATION OF THE NOISE WERE BOTH PADS ON THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR. I HAVE BEEN HAVING AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WITH THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ON MY 2000 VW JETTA TDI. THE ABS "ACTIVATES" WHEN GOING VERY SLOWLY (LESS THAN 10 MPH) AND WHEN APPLYING MINIMAL PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, AND SOMETIMES WHEN NOT TOUCHING THE BRAKES AT ALL. IT FIRST HAPPENED OVER A YEAR AGO, AND THE DEALER CHANGED AN ABS HARNESS CONNECTOR, AND THE PROBLEM DID NOT RECUR UNTIL ABOUT 4 OR 5 MONTHS AGO. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES, AND THE PROBLEM OCCURRED FOR THEM, BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE, EVEN AFTER CALLING VW TECHNICIANS. THEY REPLACED A WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AT MY EXPENSE, BUT SAID IF THAT DIDN'T FIX IT, THEY SUGGESTED REPLACING THE ABS CONTROL MODULE, BUT THEY REALLY DIDN'T KNOW IF THAT WAS THE PROBLEM. THE DRIVER SIDE SEAT NO LONGER STAYS IN A LOCKED POSITION, AND THE SEAT MOVES FREELY, SLIDING FROM BACK TO FRONT, MAKING CONTROL OVER THE VEHICLE'S PEDAL VERY DIFFICULT AND DRIVING HAZARDOUS. AFTER INSPECTING UNDERNEATH THE SEAT, A LARGE COILED PIECE OF METAL WAS FOUND LYING ON THE CARPET. THIS PIECE OF METAL MATCHES EXACTLY ANOTHER PIECE OF METAL THAT FELL OUT FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE PASSENGER SEAT OVER SIX YEARS AGO. I CONTACTED THE DEALER, (FRESNO MICHAEL AUDI VW) TO HAVE THEM REPLACE THE PART BACK INTO THE SEAT SO THAT THE SEAT NO LONGER MOVED FREELY AND THE SERVICE MANAGER REFUSED TO CARRY OUT ANY SUCH WORK ON MY VEHICLE. I HAVE DRIVEN THE CAR APPX 10,000 MILES SINCE PURCHASE WITHOUT ANY ACCIDENTS OR INCIDENTS THAT MAY CAUSE THESE ITEMS TO COME LOOSE. WHEN I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALER I WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS VERY COMMON AMONG THESE CARS AND IS NOT A WARRANTY ITEM, FURTHERMORE, THEY ADVISED ME THAT THIS HAD TO BE DRIVER INDUCED DAMAGE, ALTHOUGH THEY NEVER INSPECTED IT. SHE NOTICED THAT THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED OR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. I BOUGHT MY JETTA 03/2009 AND HAVE NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS. IMMEDIATELY AFTER PURCHASING I NOTICED AFTER ONCE I WOULD PULL OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY AND PRESS THE GAS AND THE ASR LIGHT AND EPC LIGHT WOULD COME ON, AND IT WOULD LOSE POWER AS IN NOT GO. AT ABOUT 50,000 MILES AS I WAS DRIVING UPHILL THE ENGINE FELT AS IF IT WAS FAILING AND LOSING POWER. IT REGAINED POWER, BUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. FOR A NEWER CAR THIS VOLKSWAGEN HAS BEEN VERY PROBLEMATIC. ON THREE OCCASIONS AFTER STARTING THE CAR THE ENGINE WOULD MAKE A NOTICEABLE SPUTTERING NOICE AND SHAKING LIKE IT WAS STRUGGLING TO KEEP RUNNING. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON ACCOMPANIED BY A SULFUROUS SMELL AND BLUISH EXHAUST. UPON ATTEMPTING TO PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE, AFTER IDLING FOR A WHILE, THE CAR WOULD STALL AND NOT RESTART. USUALLY WITHIN AN HOUR TO A DAY LATER IT WOULD START AGAIN ONLY AFTER REVING THE ENGINE TO HIGH RPMS FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES. I CONTACTED THE DEALER THE FIRST TIME IT OCCURED (TOO BUSY TO SEE MY CAR) THEY THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE MOISTURE IN THE ENGINE. THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO OCCUR AFTER OR AROUND RAINY/SNOWY WEATHER. WHEN I SHUT THE DOOR AND REACHED TO OPEN THE DRIVER'S DOOR THE DOORS LOCKED AND ARMED. THANKFULLY I HAD MY KEYS IN MY HAND AND WAS ABLE TO QUICKLY UNLOCK AND GET INTO MY CAR, BUT I SHUDDER TO THINK WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO MY CHILD IF IT HAD BEEN A HOT SUMMER DAY AND I COULDN'T GET INTO MY CAR QUICKLY ENOUGH. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES (INTERMITTENTLY) WITHIN THE LAST TWO MONTHS. WHEN I CONTACTED MY LOCAL DEALERSHIPS SERVICE DEPARTMENT I WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM IS A FAULTY DOOR LATCH AND THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH VW CARS. THIS WAS UPSETTING NOT ONLY BECAUSE MY CHILD COULD HAVE BEEN HURT, BUT BECAUSE I HAD JUST REPLACED ANOTHER DOOR LATCH JUST PRIOR TO THE BIRTH OF MY CHILD. I?M NOT SURE WHY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT DIDN'T CHECK THE OTHER DOOR LATCHES AT THAT TIME, BUT I THINK THAT SHOULD BE STANDARD PRACTICE AS THESE CAN BECOME DANGEROUS IF UNFIXED. UNTIL I CAN AFFORD THE $400 TO FIX THE DOOR LATCH (OR BUY A NEW CAR AT THIS POINT) I NO LONGER LOCK MY DOORS OR USE MY REMOTE IN ORDER TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN. HOWEVER, EVEN IF SERVICE DEPARTMENT REPLACES MY DOOR LATCH I AM NOT CONFIDENT THAT THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN. IN TALKING TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE SERVICED VW CARS I HAVE LEARNED THAT THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM. I UNDERSTAND THAT CAR PARTS STOP WORKING AT SOME POINT; HOWEVER WHAT THEY SHOULD NOT DO IS TURN THE CAR INTO POTENTIAL DEATH TRAP. MY CAR HAD RECALL #04V096000 PERFORMED APPROX 1.5 YEARS AGO (A SWITCH WAS REPLACED). THAT SAME SWITCH HAD BEEN REPLACED SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE. IT IS THE SWITCH THAT DETECTS WHETHER OR NOT I HAVE PRESSED THE BRAKE, ALLOWING ME TO SHIFT OUT OF PARK. SOMETIMES IT ALSO AFFECTS MY BRAKE LIGHTS, CAUSING THEM TO NOT TURN ON WHEN THE BRAKE IS DEPRESSED. HOWEVER, ON MAY 14, 2005 I BROUGHT THE CAR IN AGAIN FOR THE SAME PROBLEM, EVEN AFTER THE RECALL. THIS IS THE 4TH TIME IT HAS HAPPENED. THIS TIME IT DID AFFECT THE BRAKE LIGHTS - THEY WOULD NOT COME ON WHEN I DEPRESSED THE BRAKE. THE DEALERSHIP STATED THAT THE CAUSE OF THE BRAKE LIGHT FAILURE WAS NOT DUE TO A FUSE, BUT DUE TO THAT SWITCH, AND THAT THE TWO ARE CONNECTED. WHEN THE SWITCH MALFUNCTIONS THE BRAKE LIGHTS COULD MALFUNCTION AS WELL. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE SWITCH (AGAIN). THIS IS THE 4TH TIME THAT PART HAS BEEN REPLACED. AFTER 4 TO 5 WEEKS OF DRIVING, A SECOND TIRE (DIFFERENT WHEEL) FROM THE SAME ORIGINAL SET OF 4, FAILED SUDDENLY. THIS TIRE "SUDDENLY" FAILED WITH A "GUN SHOT" LIKE NOISE WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY. REVIEW AT THE SERVICE SHOP SHOWED NOTHING UNUSUAL IN THE INSTALLATION. I WORK FOR AN AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING COMPANY, AND HAD ONE OF OUR EXPERT TECHNICIANS REVIEW THE SECOND TIRE. HE HAS 30 YEARS OF SERVICE EXPERIENCE WITHIN CHRYSLER DEALERSHIPS. HE WAS CONVINCED THAT THIS WAS A TIRE DEFECT, HAD NEVER SEEN SUCH A FAILURE, AND STATED THAT THIS TYPE OF FAILURE WOULD NOT HAPPEN DURING INSTALLATION. THIS WAS BASED ON THE LOOSE CONDITION OF THE STEEL RING ON THE INNER TIRE, AND THE FACT THAT THEIR WERE NO WITNESS TOOL MARKS ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE TIRE. THE ORIGINAL INSTALLER OF THE TIRES ALSO STATED THAT THE RUBBER ON THE INNER BEAD OF THE TIRE WAS "TOO THIN" AND OF POOR CONSTRUCTION. I HAVE THE SECOND TIRE IN MY POSSESSION, AND HAVE REQUESTED THE ORIGINAL FIRST TIRE BACK FROM THE SELLER. I HAVE NOT YET RECEIVED THIS, NOR HAVE I RECEIVED ANY FORMAL CONCLUSIVE REPORT WITH MEASUREMENTS AND ANALYSIS TO PROVE THEIR CONCLUSION. RIGHT NOW THEY ARE ONLY STATING THEIR PERSONAL OPINION, WITHOUT THOROUGH ANALYSIS. I AM STILL DRIVING ON THE REMAINING TIRES WITH AN "UNEASY" FEELING THAT I AM AT RISK OF ANOTHER CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. IN READING THE MANUAL FOR MY VEHICLE IT STATED THAT THIS IS A THREE-POINT SAFETY BELT AND THAT THEY ARE EQUIPPED WITH BELT TENSIONERS. SENSORS ACTIVATE THE BELT TENSIONERS IN FRONTAL COLLISIONS. HI, IT SEEMS AS IF MANY 2000+ VW JETTAS HAVE DEFECTIVE REAR CENTER SEAT BELTS. WHEN YOU FOLD DOWN THE REAR SEATS, THE CENTER SEAT BELTS WILL RETRACT IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO MOVE THE SEAT BACK TO THE UPRIGHT POSITION WITHOUT DISCONNECTING THE SEAT BELT. THE FUEL LINE ON MY 2000 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA RECENTY BURST, MAKING A SOUND LIKE A BALLOON POPPING AND LEAKING SEVERAL GALLONS GASOLINE IN THE TEN MINUTES IT TOOK ME TO GET TO A SERVICE STATION FOR AN EMERGENCY REPAIR. THE MECHANIC WHO REMOVED THE FUEL LINE (WHICH I KEPT) SHOWED ME TWO SMALL SPLITS, BUT HE WAS UNCERTAIN ABOUT WHAT CAUSED THE DAMAGE. THE JETTA'S FUEL LINE RUNS IN A SHALLOW CHANNEL UNDER THE CAR, BUT I WAS ON A SMOOTH, PAVED STREET AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE AND DON'T RECALL HITTING A POTHOLE OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT MIGHT EXPLAIN THE DAMAGE. TWO THOUGHTS: DESPITE BEING IN A CHANNEL, CLEARANCE ON THE JETTA IS LOW AND THE FUEL LINE IS RATHER EXPOSED, SO IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN SCRAPED OR DAMAGED AT SOME OTHER TIME...PERHAPS BY ROAD DEBRIS OR DRIVING OVER A SPEED BUMP OR POTHOLE. THE ONLY OTHER LOGICAL EXPLANATION WOULD BE A DEFECTIVE FUEL LINE. IF THE FORMER, THEN VW SHOULD CONSIDER A RECALL TO RELOCATE THE FUEL LINE IN THIS MODEL OR INSTALL SOME TYPE OF SHIELDING. IF THE LATTER, THEN VW SHOULD REPLACE AND UPGRADE THE FUEL LINE IN THIS MODEL. ONE YEAR AFTER PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE FROM A PRIVATE OWNER, TODAY WAS THE SECOND INCIDENT I'VE HAD REGARDING THE CLUTCH AND THE FUMES IT EMITS. VW DIAGNOSED MY CAR AS HAVING A "TURBO WASTE GATE BLOWN" I DEFERRED THE REPAIR INTENDING TO DRIVE THE CAR UNTIL THE TURBO WENT. 2) ON THE WAY HOME, SIX MILES FROM THE DEALERSHIP, THE CAR RAN SLIGHTLY ROUGH. I OBSERVED LIGHT SMOKE COMING FROM MY CAR IN THE HEAD LIGHTS OF THE CARS BEHIND ME. I DEDUCTED MY CAR WAS BURNING CARBON SINCE CARBON BUILD UP WAS NOTED ON THE REPORT. I SLIGHTLY DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR AND THE CAR RACED FORWARD. I IMMEDIATELY REMOVED MY FOOT FROM THE GAS PEDAL AND NOTHING HAPPENED. THE CAR RACED FORWARD SO QUICKLY AND WITH SUCH FORCE I WOULD COMPARE IT TO A MUSCLE CAR BEING FLOORED. THE CAR KEPT ACCELERATING. I LOOKED AT THE TACHOMETER AND IT WAS GOING BY 4,000 RPM. THIS DIESEL ENGINE WAS SCREAMING. INSTINCTIVELY I DEPRESSED THE CLUTCH TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE CAR. THE ENGINE REVVED THEN BLEW. I WAS 7 MILES FROM THE DEALERSHIP. SERVICE MANGER STATED THAT A GASKET IN THE TURBO LET GO CAUSING THE ENGINE TO SUCK OIL FROM THE CRANKCASE FUELING THE ENGINE. HE TOLD ME THAT NOTHING COULD STOP THE ENGINE FROM REVVING NOT EVEN TURNING OFF THE KEY. HE TOLD ME THAT ALL DIESEL ENGINES WERE MADE THIS WAY. THERE IS NOTHING VW COULD DO FOR ME. PURCHASE VW PASSAT 2000 1.8 TURBO AFTER ONE FROM PURCHASE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT GOES ON. TOOK IT INTO THE SHOP AND THEY REMOVED AND INSTALLED TEMP SENSOR. AFTER COUPLE OF MONTH LATER AGAIN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT GOES ON AGAIN. DEALER'S SERVICE DEPT SAID THEY HAVE TO PERFORM DIAGNOSTIC CHECK TO FIND OUT AND THEY WOULD CHARGE FOR THAT SERVICE. The contact owns a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while driving with the front driver’s side seat heater activated, the seat became extremely hot. The contact started smelling a burning odor coming from the seat. The contact felt a hole in the seat, which burned the contact's middle finger. The contact immediately pulled over and turned off the vehicle. The contact’s back started burning due to the extreme heat of the seat back. Upon inspection, the contact discovered a hole in his jacket and approximately four holes that had formed in the front driver seat due to the seat heater failure. The contact was not treated for the burns to his back. The contact stated that two dealers were notified of the failure but neither provided immediate assistance. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and informed the contact that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 489,000.

SINCE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED, THERE HAS BEEN NUMEROUS PROBLEMS AND ISSUES WITH THE VEHICLE. THE MOST TROUBLESOME AND EXPENSIVE IS THE COOLING SYSTEM. I HAVE HAD 3 DIFFERENT REPAIR SHOPS LOOK AT IT AND "FIX IT" ONLY TO HAVE THE CAR DO THE SAME THING. THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE DOES NOT INDICATE THAT THE CAR IS OVERHEATING, HOWEVER, IT MUST BE. I HAVE BEEN STRANDED MULTIPLE TIMES (ALMOST EVERYDAY IN MY COMMUTE TO FROM WORK AND SCHOOL), AFTER I SIT IN TRAFFIC OVER 20 MINUTES, OUT OF NOWHERE THE RADIATOR CAP BLOWS OFF THE COOLING RESERVOIR SPILLING THE LIQUID ALL OVER THE ENGINE AND CAUSING THE CAR TO SMOKE. I HAVE EVEN BURNED HAD A SECOND DEGREE BURN FROM HAVING TO PULL OVER AND OPENING THE TRUNK SO I CAN REFILL AFTER IT COOLS. SOMEONE HAS YET TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. 1) I'M NOT EXACTLY SURE WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED, SEE #2 AND YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHY. 2) TODAY I FOUND THAT THERE WAS SOME KIND OF SHORT CIRCUIT IN THE DRIVERS SIDE SEAT. IT LEFT A PEA-SIZED BURN IN THE UPHOLSTERY. LUCKILY, I USE A SMALL DRIVING PILLOW FOR MY LOWER BACK WHICH BORE THE BRUNT OF THE FIRE INSTEAD OF MY BUTT. I HAD FOUND THE PILLOW WAS STUCK TO THE SEAT, AND WHEN I PULLED IT OFF THE BURN WAS REVEALED. THE PILLOW WAS DAMAGED. 3) I HAVE DONE NOTHING TO CORRECT THE FAILURE AS OF YET. 1) SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR IN 2000, THERE HAS BEEN A SOUND MADE AT THE FRONT END OF THE CAR WHILE DRIVING. 2) LOUD SOUND WHEN DRIVING ON REGULAR ROADS. PERSISTENT LOUD THUMP SOUND. 3) I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES FOR SOUNDS AND HAVE ASKED OTHER JETTA OWNERS AND THEY TOO AGREED THAT THEIR CAR HAD A LOUD NOISE FROM THE FRONT END. I WAS EVEN CHARGED SEVERAL TIMES BY THE DEALER WERE I PURCHASED THE CAR TO RE-TORQUE AND TEST THE FRONT END. THEY AGREED THAT THEY COULD DEFINITELY HEAR THE SOUND BUT COULD NOT TROUBLE SHOOT THE PROBLEM. ALL ATTEMPTS TO REPAIR OR FIND PROBLEM ARE DOCUMENTED IN MY SERVICE THROUGH VOLKSWAGEN. I ALSO HAVE TAKEN MY CAR TO APPROXIMATELY 8 ADDITIONAL SHOPS TO TROUBLE SHOOT NOISE. ALL AGREED THAT THE NOISE WAS UNBEARABLE BUT NO SOLUTION WAS FOUND. I AM THE PRIMARY REPAIR PERSON FOR THIS VEHICLE. OVER ITS HISTORY, THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS COMPONENT FAILURES THAT IN MY OPINION ARE UNACCEPTABLE FOR A VEHICLE WITH THIS MILEAGE AND AGE. I PERSONALLY KNOW THE OWNER, AND KNOW THAT IT IS NOT OPERATED UNDER UNUSUALLY HARSH CONDITIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A MINOR COSMETIC CRASH EARLY ON, OTHERWISE, THERE HAVE BEEN NO UNUSUAL OUTSIDE FACTORS. AT THIS POINT, THE CAR HAS ONLY 37,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. PRIMARY USE IS ON LONG TRIPS. THE VEHICLE IS PARKED AND STORED FOR ABOUT 3-6 MONTHS EACH YEAR. FIRST PROBLEM: AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM LEAK: THE EXPANSION VALVE FAILED, REQUIRING REPLACEMENT. CHECK ENGINE/ MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT: HAS COME ON SEVERAL TIMES, EACH TIME WITH THE SAME DTC, A MANUFACTURER SPECIFIC CODE RELATED TO THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR. THE POWER WINDOWS HAVE FAILED, ULTIMATELY RESULTING IN FREE REPAIR OF THE WINDOWS WITH A REVISED RETAINING CLIP, AS THIS PROBLEM OCCURS FAR TOO OFTEN, AND FINALLY, THE REAR BRAKE PADS HAVE WORN COMPLETELY WITH THE FRONT PADS IN VIRTUALLY NEW CONDITION. THIS IS ACCOMPANIED BY ALL FOUR ROTORS BEING EXCESSIVELY PITTED, WITH LARGE AREAS OF THE ROTOR FACE ACTUALLY FLAKING OFF. MY RESEARCH SHOWS THAT I MAY END UP NEEDING TO REPLACE THE REAR CALIPERS, AS WELL, DUE TO POOR DESIGN. *JB

1) VEHICLE COMFORT MODULE SPONTANEOUSLY FAILED. THIS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING THE CAR! 2) A MAJORITY OF THE FUNCTIONS CONTROLLED BY THIS MODULE FAILED, INCLUDING ALARM GOING OFF WHILE DRIVING, FUEL CAP RELEASE NOT WORKING, DOOR LOCKS, TRUNK RELEASE, ETC. ALL FAILED. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY, THE ALARM WENT OFF AND THERE WAS NOTHING I COULD DO TO TURN IT OFF. CALLED EMERGENCY ROADSIDE SERVICE AND THEY SHOWED ME HOW TO DISABLE THE ALARM (TURN THE KEY IN THE DOOR LOCK ON AND OFF SEVERAL DOZEN TIMES). HOWEVER NONE OF THE OTHER FUNCTIONS WORKED, MOST SERIOUS WAS THAT THE FUEL CAP COULD NOT BE OPENED. I HAD TO GET THIS FIXED BEFORE I RAN OUT OF FUEL! 3) TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. THEY REPLACED THE COMFORM MODULE AND MOST OF THE SYSTEM OPERATIONAL AGAIN. 4) HOWEVER OVER TIME, ONE BY ONE VARIOUS SYSTEMS STARTING MALFUNCTIONING AGAIN. WITHIN WEEKS, ONE OF THE REAR DOOR LOCKS WOULDN'T CLOSE AUTOMATICALLY. LATER THE TRUNK RELEASE DIDN'T WORK WITH THE REMOTE. THEN THE INTERIOR LIGHTS WOULDN'T GO OFF AUTOMATICALLY. OTHER DOOR LOCKS STOPPED FUNCTIONING, ETC. 5) SINCE THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THESE WERE NOT CRUCIAL FUNCTIONS, I LIVED WITH THESE FAILURES. BUT NOW I'M UNCOMFORTABLE DRIVING THE CAR, NOT KNOWING WHERE AGAIN IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, EVERYTHING STOPS WORKING AGAIN. 6) I CALLED VOLKSWAGEN AND DESCRIBED THIS. MY CAR HAS 58,000 MILES ON IT AND LIKE MANY OTHERS ON THIS SITE IT HAS SUFFERED PROBLEM AFTER PROBLEM WITH EACH ONE GETTING MORE SERIOUS. I HAVE REPLACED A MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR,GLOVE BOX,TURBO PARTS,AND SOME PLASTIC CLIPS ON THE ARM REST. BUT, WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONER, FUEL GAUGE STARTED ACTING UP, AND THE FACT THAT THIS CAR HAS STALLED ON US THREE OR MORE TIMES RECENTLY (WHILE OUT DRIVING),THEN SAFETY BECOMES AN ISSUE. THERE HAVE BEEN THREE INSTANCES WHERE THE SAME RIGHT REAR BRAKE PAD HAVE WORN DOWN BEFORE ANY OF THE OTHER BRAKE PAD ON OUR VEHICLE. AT THE TIME WE HAD AN EXTENDED WARRENTY AND CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND THE VEHICLE WARRENTY OWNER THROUGH THE DEALERSHIP. THE WARRENTY OWNER INDICATED THAT IT WAS NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR THEREFORE THEY WOULD NOT COVER IT. WE FOUGHT WITH THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT THE ISSUE BUT THEY ALSO INDICATED THE SAME THING ALTHOUGH THEY COMMENTED THAT IT WAS VERY UNUSUAL THAT ONLY ONE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE SUCH A PROBLEM. WE MET ANOTHER CUSTOMER AT THE SAME DEALERSHIP THAT WAS HAVING THE SAME EXACT ISSUE WITH HER VEHICLE AND HAD BROUGHT IT IN FOR REPAIR. WE MENTIONED THIS TO THE SERVICE AGENT BUT IT WAS AGAIN NOT REGARDED AS SOMETHING SIGNIFICANT. THE FOLLOWING YEAR WE HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH THAT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AGAIN. WE WENT TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP WITH OUR COMPLIANT AND SHOWED THEM OUR REPAIR ORDER THE YEAR BEFORE AND THEY DID NOT REGARD IT AT ALL. WE HAD THE PROBLEM REPAIR AT PEP BOYS BECAUSE IT WAS GOING TO BE TOO MUCH AT THE DEALERSHIP. WE AGAIN HAD THE PROBLEM A THIRD TIME AND BY THIS TIME OUR EXTENDED WARRENTY WAS OVER AND WE KNEW THE DEALERSHIP WOULD NOT LISTEN SO WE WENT AHEAD AND REPAIRED THE PROBLEM YET AGAIN. TOOK CAR IN FOR THE A/C PROBLEM A TOTAL OF 8 TIMES! WROTE OFFICIAL COMPLAINT LETTER TO VW DEALERSHIP. MANAGER FOUND THE WHOLE A/C SYSTEM WAS LEAKING! MANAGER SAID IT WOULD COST $3,725 DOLLARS! ( B/C WARRANTY HAS BEEN EXPIRED) TO FIX THE A/C UNIT. THEY OFFERED TO PAY FOR 50% OF THE PRICE. WE ARE NOT SATISFIED. WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING B/C THE VW "QUALIFIED" TECHNICIANS ATTEMPTED TO FIX THE CAR, ENTRUSTED THE CAR INTO THEIR CARE, BUT EVENTUALLY LED THE CUSTOMER TO BIGGER PROBLEMS! THE CAR HAD ALL THE MAINTENANCE SERVICES DONE ON TIME! FAILURE OF THE TECHNICIANS BEING ABLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM DOES NOT SHOW THAT THEY ARE QUALIFIED..WHAT DID THEY CHECK??? WHY TELL THE CUSTOMER THAT JUST BECAUSE WARRANTY EXPIRED THAT THERE IS NO OLBIGATION BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY ANYMORE WHEN THEY ARE THE ONES WHO HAVE TOUCHED THE SYSTEM AND ATTEMPTED TO FIX IT?? TRANSMISSION FAILED. THE DEALER REPLACED THE PART. HOWEVER, TWO WEEKS LATER THE PART FAILED AGAIN. *AK THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT GO INTO REVERSE. THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPED AND THE VEHICLE HAD RUN INTO A POLE AT A GAS STATION ON THE RIGHT FRONT SIDE. THIS PROBLEM REMAINED THE SAME.
