How to read a Volkswagen Jetta VIN — every digit explained
Every Volkswagen Jetta carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Jetta.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Jetta VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

While traveling on [XXX] in Van Buren, Arkansas, I was involved in a hit-and-run accident. The impact caused significant front-end damage and resulted in physical injuries. The vehicle’s dashboard/electrical system indicated AIRBAG:ERROR, and the police report reflects that airbag deployed yet we have photo evidence that the airbag did not deploy. However, photo evidence clearly shows that no airbags deployed for any occupants. The airbags remained completely intact following the crash. The vehicle is a certified pre-owned 2019 Volkswagen Jetta that was still under warranty at the time. This raises serious safety concerns regarding the accuracy of the airbag deployment system and the failure of the airbags to function during a serious collision. The vehicle is being held for preservation at the co-part yard. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Auxiliary Heater, Part# 1KO 963 235 H, Melted at the grounding post, potentially damaging wiring harness. Fire started in driver side footwell on 11/5/2025. Included is a photo of where the fire originated from. Medium burning to hands, and smoke inhalation from my passenger.
My vw jetta tdi had many problems since i purchased it. First, we had problems with the injection system imploding. They asked if we ever put in gasoline instead of diesel. I told them absolutely not. They wanted to charge me $6500 because car was out of warranty but service manager got vw to pay for it because i said i was going to get an attorney. On june 27, 2014 we had with an electrical problem where the battery was draining from a short in the radio modulator. The car had 101,348 miles. They fixed the problem which took 9 days to fix and cost $1238.56. I noticed the radio would stayed on with the key out of the car after that though. Then we had the check engine, air bag, abs and traction lights on at 109,452. I took it to my service station on 11/28/2014, but he said the dealer had to program update the software and check the abs module for electrical problem. The dealer said it was the o2 sensor on number 2 cylinder. They found no problems with the air bag, abs module or traction control. They charged me $600. The lights were all off. On january 3, my 17 year old daughter and her girlfriend went to the movies last night with the car. It was lightly raining out. She left the movie theatre around 8:20 pm. She came up to an intersection that was turning red. She applied the brakes and skidded through the intersection hitting another vehicle that was crossing. She was doing about 40 mph. She said the car did not want to stop. She said there where lights on the dashboard when she was driving. People in the other car went to hospital. *tr
Dt: the contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetty. The contact stated s dashboard control system caught on fire. Last night was driving on highway smelled something burning. Was not sure what it was. Got close to home and smoke was coming out of the dashboard. By the time she got within a block of the house the dashboard was on fire. Husband came out with a fire extinguisher. Husband used extinguisher on vehicle. Called fire department and police departments. They unhooked the battery. Fire department gave all clear, but not to try to drive vehicle. They told consumer to take vehicle to volkswagen dealer. This morning called volkswagen, and were in the process of seeing what they could do. Husband sustained right leg injuries. Customer also complained of eyes burning from smoke. Police department and fire department reports taken. No crashes. We had just picked vehicle up from the dealer.*ak
I havve been having electrical issues the past three-five months on this vehicle today when in a car accident the air bag lights came on but no air bags deployed fire and rescue siad they should have deployeed. The radio would turn on and off and sometimes the head lights wouldnt turn on.
Vehicle was purchased with check engine light on, returned to dealership and was told it was the gas cap. The vehicle was stalling after that. Vehicle stalled while driving on parkway, all of the dash lights came on and the ability to brake and steer was gone causing an accident. Airbags did not deploy on the front end collision. Vehicle had 1100 miles on it
The contact’s mother owns a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked outside, the contact’s mother was notified that the vehicle had caught fire. The contact stated that upon her mother and sister approaching the vehicle, they noticed that the front driver’s side door was on fire. The contact then stated that her sister used her hand in an attempt to pat the fire away. As a result, the contact’s sister sustained an injury to her right hand that required medical attention. The fire department was notified, and the fire was extinguished. The fire department determined that the origin of the fire was electrical. A police report was filed. The contact stated that her mother then received recall notification of the NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V648000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The vehicle was taken to the dealer however, the contact stated that the dealer refused service. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 151,217.

The driver sustained injuries to the left shoulder and back, which required medical attention. The injuries to the other vehicle occupants were unknown. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was awaiting diagnosis. Several weeks prior to the collision, the vehicle was taken to the dealer for the flashing instrumental panel lighting and intermittent starting issue. At that time, the vehicle was diagnosed as needing a new battery. The battery was replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Car continues to leak, tire sensor always on doesn't go away, since the beginning of lease terms, all the above mentioned is consistent, while vehicle is stationary, in motion, on street or on a highway. Further, the same occurs with any turn.
I was stopped at a solid red traffic light and when i got the green light to proceed straight across the intersection i began to accelerate. Halfway through the intersection another vehicle (vehicle #2) crossed my path of travel on the right hand passenger side and vehicle #2 driver's side crashed into my front end. My vehicle was spun around counter clockwise due to the impact of vehicle #2. As a result of this crash my vehicle sustained heavy front end damage and pieces and parts were strewn all over the road. Fluid was leaking out of my vehicle and the vehicle was not able to be operated post-collision. With the heavy front end damage the driver, passenger and side airbags in my vehicle did not deploy. *tr

The contact owns a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while attempting to park the vehicle in a handicapped parking space, the vehicle failed to stop despite the contact's foot firmly depressed on the brake pedal. As the vehicle continued to move forward with the contact's foot depressed to the floorboard, the vehicle drove over the parking barrier, knocked over the handicapped post, and entered the sidewalk. The vehicle eventually decelerated and the contact managed to shift the vehicle into reverse(R) and regain control of the vehicle. The contact was uncertain if any warning lights appeared on the instrument panel during the failure. Despite the property damage and emotional distress suffered by both the contact and the passenger, no injuries were reported and no immediate medical attention was needed. A police report was not filed and the air bags did not deploy as a result of the failure. The incident was reported to the store manager. The contact was able to drive the vehicle back home without incident. The manufacturer nor the dealer had been notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be diagnosed or serviced. The failure mileage was approximately 66,000.
2011 vw jetta tdi failed while driving on highway. As car slowed due to traffic, the coil (glow plug?) light came on. When car came to complete stop due to traffic, engine light came on and the car stopped and would not restart. There was no time for me to move to the side of the highway due to traffic congestion so i was stranded in the middle of the freeway. Waiting for ca highway patrol for help, traffic cleared and i was subsequently hit by a car moving at freeway speeds and sustained injuries (ribs, back and neck injuries, and concussion) online, there are numerous reports of other vw cars that experienced the exact same issue (coil/glow plug light, then engine failure). This happened to me on a freeway and the rear-end collision i was subjected to due to car failure could have been fatal. Since this is happening to other vw cars, i believe this needs to be investigated to prevent fatalities. Thank you! *tr
2019 jetta s. Began stalling after 6 months of ownership. Car was purchased brand new with 62 miles. Brought vehicle to dealer 09/27/2019 and they stated it was fine no issues could be found. On 05/18/2020 the car stalled again it had 15452 miles on it. It was towed to the dealer where they kept the car until 07/25/2020 to fix the problem. They stated it was fixed. On 07/30/2020 the vehicle stalled again, and this time the brakes failed and the steering wheel locked and i lost control and crashed into a center median with large boulders in it. If they were not there i would have continued into oncoming traffic. I was traveling at 45 mph when the impact occurred. The vehicle safety systems did not deploy because the cars engine was not running at the time of impact.
Since day one car is shaking like a boat, when i drive it on a highway making it not stable. Brakes squeak and i see signs on the brake disk.i am with the original brakes. Car is shutting down when i park. When i switch again to drive, it is completely off from itself, key is inside and i have to turn the key off and then start the car again. Air condition is not working properly vw said they have better 8 zones air condition. I had oil lamp around 5000-6000 miles they said that the car should not have problems till 10 000 miles. I have problems accelerating, i am loosing power. I have grinding scraping noise from the transmission. Also transmission jumps when i drive, slow response. The engine is giving me lag when i am at traffic light, vibration and shaking. I make multiple calls to the dealership and volkswagen group of america to tow and fix my car that i leased. I explain that the car is not safe. I have been involved in multiple accidents. I am not feeling safe operating this vehicle. It's been more than half year and not one problem is fixed.
My vehicle has started to hesitate when i try to accelerate randomly. It doesn't happen every time i drive but it happens multiple times per week. I will press my gas, and my car will hesitate, i hear it revving but my rpms go nowhere. It's almost like it's not catching. This will occur for around 5 seconds, leaving me incapable of moving. It has left me stuck in the middle of intersections, taking unsafe turns out of parking lots, etc. It is a very scary issue. However, no check engine or other lights illuminate at that moment, and no codes are found when the car is scanned. I have a sprint drive device that is constantly plugged in to the oem port and it has never picked up on an issue which makes diagnosis very difficult. This leaves me in serious fear of driving my car that i just purchased certified used 3 months ago, with less than 30,000 miles on it. I also have another issue where the same set of lights come on every time i drive- abs, tire pressure, airbag, traction/anti-skid, and steering wheel light all come on at the same time... But not sure if they're related because they don't initiate simultaneously with the delay in acceleration.
Dealership has had my car for 100 days and still not fixed. 2014 - 2 clutches and a rebuilt transmission later. Car was returned, same day 5th gear went out again on interstate 95 almost killed my son.

I tried to stop my car and the brake pedal went completely to the floor and did not stop at all. There were no warning lights on, I keep my brakes and car well maintained. My car hit the rear of another car because the brakes failed to engage when I pushed the pedal down. My car which is the vw jetta was totaled in the accident. My insurance company GEICO has the car sitting at copart and it should be able to be inspected. *tr

I suspect that my 2019 vw jetta computer system/car was hacked/driven remotely on 12/3/2019 that caused an accident (photos attached) that led to my car being a total loss. I sustained injuries and was taken by ambulance to the local er from the accident. This case is still involved in court proceedings as of today. I was driving home and my car speed accelerated without me being on the gas and my breaks were not working. Without turning the steering wheel i drove off to the right hitting a parked car. The police report indicated that after impact with parked car #1, i rolled back 55 feet and hit another parked car on the opposite side of the street. I did not think any of this was possible until i was reading about car hacking and cars being driven remotely. I also did not think that it was possible with the 'impact safety features' on a vw jetta, i could possibly roll backward after the impact of parked car #1? I am looking to have this issue investigated. I am also sending information to the fbi internet crime complaint center.

Drove the vehicle home from work friday 1/13, weather was below freezing causing ice build up. Parked the vehicle in my garage ~45 degrees. Ice began melt, and when trying to start the vehicle saturday afternoon it turned 1/4 turn and the engine stopped. My assumption is that the engine inhaled water causing a hydro-lock, i continued to try to start the vehicle a total 5 times (it turned over once and ran extremely rough and died once). The last time trying to start the vehicle i smelled smoke, i popped the hood to find the starter and wiring on fire. I was able to extinguish the fire relatively quickly, considering the vehicle was parked in my garage attached to my house this could have extremely catastrophic if i wouldn't have been able to get the fire out. *** this is the second time for the hard / no start problem, this one however resulted in the fire. Volkswagen will not follow the below tsb since the vehicle started after wiring and starter replacement. Issue mirrors tsb # 21 11 06 / 2025464, which includes engine will not turn over, "dead battery" starter action (due to hydraulic resistance in cylinder), and starter/electrical fires (due to starter overheating during attempts to start locked engine). *tr

I purchased a 6-speed manual transmission jetta-tdi at the end of december of 2009. I have been driving manual transmission cars since 1975, and i was upset that my car was stalling either just starting out in first or in the lower rpm range of the lower gears when turning and moving through intersections or trying to go uphill when the rpms were in the lower range. Keeping the rpms up a bit seems to have helped, as i am not having it stall as much as before. I also noticed what seemed like a slight hesitation or jerking when cruising . It would be just for a split second and then be gone my accident occurred when i was parallel parking on a hill. I went to back up a bit to straighten out my car and it stalled, rolling forward into the car parked in front of me. Fortunately, no one was injured. Damage was minor, but was submitted to my insurance company. At this point i was just blaming myself for not being able to adjust to the difference of clutching with a diesel engine because i couldn't figure out how to explain it. Then a heard 2 radio reports about the complaints being filed. I called vw of america who listened to my story. They told me that in order to be compensated for my accident, that i would have needed to have had the car towed immediately to a dealership and had it diagnosed. She suggested that i take it to be diagnosed. I took it to the dealer who kept it for two days and could not find anything wrong. A week later, i was coming to a stop for a red light and the rpms began to fluctuate like it was going to stall and then it would come back to normal rpms. When i started to drive it was a little rough, then smoothed out. I called vw of america who recommended that i take it back to the dealer. I am waiting for them to return my call. I have also 3 intermittent problems with my am radio cutting out--are the problems connected?
My car caught fire today.car was parked while i was at the doctors, girl came into the office asked if anyone had a white car and that it was on fire. We called 911. The fire department put out the fire. Yesterday i received a recall notice and i called the dealership today to set up a date to get it fixed. I asked if it was safe to drive. I guess it wasn't. The fire dept. Thinks it might be electrical but the recall was for fuel injectors. The dealership sent out a flatbed to tow the car back to there garage. Not sure how it will turn out. *kb

Air Bags 884 Read
I was injured in a car accident in my 2012 vw jetta where the airbags should have been deployed but were not. People including police and insurance companies were surprised my air bags did not function. Looking further into the incident i found out via internet that there was a recall in 2016 for this problem. However, i was never notified (of the recall or problem) as the owner of this vehicle who purchased this new from a vw dealer. This occurred on the freeway when my car was coming to a complete stop for backed up traffic going under 10mph. I was rear ended by a vehicle going at least 35 mph - propelling me into the car several feet in front of me causing a 5 or 6 car pile up.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 30 mph through an intersection, the vehicle was t-boned on the passenger side. The side and curtain air bags did not deploy. Five people sustained minor injuries and a police report was taken. The dealer was not contacted.

In both accidents the air bags failed to deploy, the air bag light never goes off, even before the accidents. I had this light reset about 3 times, the first time was through the dealer and the others where through auto mechanic shop. The dealer wants to charge me $250 to fix the light problem, they say it has something to do with the seat belt buckle. I really think that this has been a safety problem and that there have been many complaints inregard to this matter. Yet the dealer does not want to accept responsibility. *tt

My 2002 volkswagen jetta gls turbo, 26,000 miles caught on fire in washington state while on the highway. I smelled gas while driving and pulled over opned hood and a fe seconds later a fire started. While on the phone with 911 there was a minor explosion and i received minor burns to the face and hands. Vehicle was towed 20 miles to karmart vw in burlington, wa. The next vw of america called and said they were investigating it. Three weeks later they called and denied the claim for repair or replacement. About $10,000 in damages. My insurance company allstate is involved and hired an engineer to investigate it. He determined it is most likely a factory defect. Vw denied to fix or replace the car becuase there no clamps present where the fire ocured. The hoses burned off about 3-6 inches. Allstate found the one of the clamps in the engine compartment. I think it rediculous that vw will not cover the damges or replace the car. What am i suppose to do with a 2 year car with major fire damage. I have lost total faith in the vehicle and don't want. I will have a hard time selling it with this kind of problem, who would want to buy car two olds knowing it was in a serious fire? What problems in the future due to this? I feel with my minor injury and being a new car vw should do something. *ak
Fuel hose leaked, resulting in a fire after recall repairs (92v-058.001). *ak
The contact owned a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while driving at 15-25 MPH, she smelled a strong burning gas odor. The contact veered to the side of the road. The contact felt an intense heat on her legs. The contact saw a flame on the driver's side of the hood and quickly exited the vehicle. The contact stated that there was also fire underneath the driver's side of the hood. The fire was extinguished with the assistance of the fire department. There were no injuries sustained. A fire department report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot, where it was totaled. A police report was not filed. The contact became aware that her VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V648000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE). An unknown dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but did not provide any assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 98,000.
Tl* the contact owned a 2010 volkswagen jetta. The vehicle was parked when the contact noticed flames coming from under the hood area. The fire department was called to extinguish the fire. The manufacturer was contacted and sent an engineer to inspect the vehicle and determine a cause of failure. The engineer discovered that there were leaves in the engine, caused by rodent infestation, which resulted in the fire. The contact stated that prior to the failure, the vehicle was repaired under a voluntary recall for the fuel system. The contact was concerned that the recall could have been related to the fire and did not agree with the engineer's findings. The vehicle was destroyed. The approximate failure mileage was 68,000. High pressure fuel pump failure caused car to stall at highway speed, ~68 mph. Pulling off freeway with dead car caused a minor fender bender. Being told fuel system repair is $8700 but will likely be covered under warranty. I wish to remain anonymous. 2010 vw jetta tdi sportwagen, dsg transmission, 3292 mi. *tr
My 2009 vw jetta tdi burst into flames 15-20 minutes after being parked. No one was in or near the car and there were no injuries or extended fire damage. The fire department was called to extinguish the fire. The hotspot is in the front left of the car, with severe damage to all components under the hood and front interior of the car. The car had been in like-new condition with scheduled maintenance performed on-time by a vw dealer; there had never been any maintenance or performance issues that i knew of prior to the incident. I contacted vw on 9/20/2011 about the incident. Their fire inspector studied the remains of the car on 9/22/2011 and deduced it might have been an issue with the exhaust system, and the leak/fire probably started as i was still driving. There was no recourse or further action. At the time, the vin # of my car had not been a part of any recall. I believe my car might/should have been part of a recent recall announced on 10/5/2011 on tdis due to fire hazard. *tr
My 09 tdi wagon with 27k miles broke down on a road trip one month ago. I was going 70 mph on the dangerous california grape vine pass when i lost power suddenly. The "engine fault workshop" came on the dash screen. I luckily coasted to a rest stop on the busy and dangerous highway. To add to the danger we came to rest under the lebec wildfire of aug. 24th flying vehicles dropped flame retardant over us. We waited for the vw roadside assistance amidst the smoke and flame retardant dust for 2 hours. The car was towed to the nearest dealer and is still in the shop approximately one month later with some part being on back order. Still under warranty, vw is going to repair the faulty fuel pump that imploded and ruined the fuel system it is a $ 6000 repair covered under warranty but i am very concerned when the warranty will expire in 3k miles. Upon further investigation we found on the blogs that this is happening widely and repeatedly among 09 tdi s when they reach a certain mileage. Further more they will be replacing the part with the same faulty part. The vw service dealer refused to give us the old pump or assure us it is a different part with a different part number. The representative i spoke with at vw of america is aware of this widespread faulty fuel pump problem. You get the sense that vw is performing damage control and almost covering up this dangerous defect. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 volkswagen jetta. While driving at speeds of 40 mph, the vehicle caught on fire. The police and fire department were called to the scene where the fire was extinguished and a fire report was filed accordingly. The manufacturer advised there were no recalls on the vehicle and would not provide any assistance. The contact inquired about nhtsa campaign id number 04v586000 (fuel system, diesel) however, the manufacturer advised they had no knowledge of the recall. The current and failure mileages were 70,000.
Fuel gauge malfunctioned. It indicated gas tank was full when it was actually empty. Consumer ran out of gas on the freeway, and was rear ended at an intersection.*ak

Car continues to leak, tire sensor always on doesn't go away, since the beginning of lease terms, all the above mentioned is consistent, while vehicle is stationary, in motion, on street or on a highway. Further, the same occurs with any turn.
I am reporting a safety concern involving unintended acceleration in a 2025 Volkswagen Jetta SE (VIN [XXX] ) Te vehicle has experienced two separate incidents in which it surged forward unexpectedly when shifting from park to drive while my foot depressed the brake pedal. The first incident occurred in approximately August 2025 while attempting to move the vehicle into a residential garage. When the transmission was shifted into Drive, the vehicle accelerated forward despite continued brake application and traveled approximately 30 feet before stopping. A collision with a structural wall was narrowly avoided. The second incident occurred on [XXX]. When shifting from Park into Drive with my foot on the brake pedal, the vehicle again surged forward unexpectedly and struck a storage cabinet inside the garage, causing property damage. A family member was nearby at the time. Following these incidents, the vehicle was taken to an authorized Volkswagen dealership (Garnet Volkswagen of West Chester, Pennsylvania) on December 15, 2025 for inspection. The dealership preformed diagnostic scans and reported no stored fault codes and was unable to duplicate the condition. The vehicle was returned without repair. The vehicle was later presented to another authorized Volkswagen, Pohanka Volkswagen of Salisbury, Maryland in February 2026 for additional evaluation without any solution. I subsequently notified Volkswagen Group of America and requested a manufacturer-level engineering review to determine whether a defect exists and whether the vehicle is safe to operate. Volkswagen declined to conduct any further manufacturer-directed investigation. Because the problem has not been resolved, I remain concerned that an intermittent mechanical or electronic defect may exist. The vehicle has relatively low mileage and is less than one year old. I am submitting this complaint so that the incident is documented as a potential safety defect. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Two safety defect incidents involving unintended acceleration. This defect has resulted in two loss of control incidents causing property damage. First incident: While attempting to move vehicle inside garage, I started engine with foot firmly on the brake, shifted the transmission into drive, and maintained full brake pressure. Immediately upon shifting, the vehicle bolted forward at an accelerate rate, despite my foot remaining fully depressed on brake. Vehicle travel about 30 feet in only a few second, coming within three feet of a structural cinder-block wall supporting house beams before braking force finally overcame the surge. Avoided a serious collision required immediate corrective action and full driver control. Second incident: Again, vehicle parked in my driveway in front of storage garage. After briefly backing up to clear the driveway, I again shifted to drive with my foot firmly on brake. As with previous incident, the vehicle surged forward unexpectedly and forcefully, overcoming normal braking and collided with full-length of storage cabinet system inside garage, destroying the cabinetry and stopping the vehicle's forward motion. At the time, my brother-in-law was nearby. Had he been in the vehicle's path serious injury could have occurred. As in the first incident, avoiding a more catastrophic impact required immediate and precise driver intervention. Following these incidents, I presented the vehicle to Garnet Volkswagen of West Chester, 1620 Wilmington Pike, West Chester, PA 19382, on December 15, 2025. The dealership reported that: They were unable to replicate the condition. Diagnostic scans reportedly showed no stored fault codes. The vehicle was returned without identifying or correcting the issue. Both major incidents occurred under the same operating scenario: shifting into drive from a stationary position with the brake pedal fully depress.
I have a 2019 vw jetta gli bought new from vw dealer. When you first start the car in the morning or after its been sitting, basically cold, it idles very rough. The whole car vibrates and shakes. After the car warms up this goes away. The ride of the car feels like there is no suspension. You feel every bump in the road. I have never gotten motion sick from a vehicle while driving. This car gives me motion sickness every time i drive it. I have had others drive the car and report the say thing. I have had passengers in the car and they can't believe how hard the ride is. I have tried all the modes eco, normal, sport and they all have a horrible ride quality. The worst thing is i was driving the car home after work and while sitting at a red light the a/c stopped blowing cold air. After coming off the red light i started smelling fuel coming from the a/c system. The a/c system was on max a/c with the recirc on, so was not on fresh air. Pulled over, opened the hood and saw fire coming from between the engine and firewall on the passenger side. I dropped the hood and the fire ball shot out the side passenger side right behind the passenger front tire. The side and under carriage of the car was on fire and is burnt up. I contacted the dealer they said to drive it in and they will take a look at it. Drive it in???? After it was on fire??? *tr
The fuel rail bolts on the car loosened, one sheered off. Fuel poured from the front end of the car. When the car was started, to be placed on a flatbed the car caught on fire. The car is currently at a mechanics, but has not been repaired. The car could have easily caught on fire while being driven or started any time before or after it actually caught on fire, it was only taken care of quickly as the tow truck driver had a fire extiguisher, we do not carry one in the car. The car had the recall work done in 2021 in Tyson's Corner VA. The dealer refuses speak to us and states that the recall was done and therefore not their issue. The issue was confirmed with the new mechanic. There was one EFC light on the night it started leaking fuel.

My car started on fire as driving to work January 21 2022 at 7:30 am.After researching after the fire Not knowing how and why that happened car had been perfectly fine no warning signs or any difference with the way it drove , I came to find out about fuel rail recall on my car that will cause car to start on fire .I almost and could have got stuck in the car which as i panicked was having trouble getting safety belt off and the door is so heavy that it had always closed back on me getting my leg smashed.I have not got any update from Manny the VW Man he ignores my calls and only left a message in response to my request to customer service i have lost my job because i do not have a car now my son has been missing school now about to be getting evicted as soon as the eviction lift is up i have 5 children i am a single widowed mother and need a car i was still paying on my car for 3 and a half years the bank screwd me over and insurance only covered them to pay off car for the bank i was financing it threw this is not fair i see q&a's on VW and they say yes to providing loaner vehicles to the ones that are having recall repaired why can i not get treated the same Manny response was that i had to pay for my own rental car they have to investigate my car to see if it was the recall that caused fire i sent him the fire police report . My car clearly had a recall this is ridiculous and not fair Do You think i did this on purpose expecting something back from these greedy not caring people in the world today lol yeah right . i loved my car was satisfied and had no issues until this one complete horrific incident that i almost got locked in and could of got injured or died. I was working and paying for my car i do not expect anything from anyone for free and that is why all the VW customer satisfaction guarantee literature i have read is of course just a bunch of sound good tell the customers what they want to hear and of course yeah Of coursr to good to be true !!!!
Map sensor - repeating failure the manifold absolute pressure (map) sensor failure causes exponential safety issues while driving on highways and/or higher speeds that can result in death. After repeated replacement and repairs, continuous failure occurs. Stalling, power and steering issues occur at high speeds and/or on highways, putting driver at risk for a fatal collision. Personally, i have had the sensor replaced multiple times, including hoses and pumps on three different occasions. Soon thereafter, map sensor fails and has caused me to create almost a dozen collisions at high speeds, particularly on highways.
I had driven the car earlier that day (about 40 miles) with no problems. I got home at about 7:30pm and parked the car outside our house. At about 2am, i heard a beeping car horn. I looked outside and saw flames coming out of the front drivers side of our beautiful 2011 jetta sportwagen. I dialed 911, the car continued to burn until the fire dept arrived and put it out. The car is a total loss. I'm only happy it wasn't parked inside a garage where the fire would have destroyed our house as well. No work had been done on the car recently and no aftermarket options were installed. I have only one question - what could cause a completely cold car (not driven in over 6 hours) to suddenly burst into flame?? Thank you.
