The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the transmission shuddered without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the transmission was faulty and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not under recall. The contact was referred to the NHTSA for assistance. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 156,000.

TRANSMISSION GOES INTO LIMP MODE ONCE VEHICLE REACHES NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE. CODES ARE P1689 AND P0746. WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE CAR WILL ONLY FUNCTION IN 2ND GEAR AND NOTHING ELSE. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS ON INTERSTATES WHERE THE MINIMUM SPEED LIMIT CAN NOT BE REACHED. RESEARCHING ONLINE, THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND THE MECHATRONIC NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE'S BATTERY WAS REPLACED THREE TIMES WITHIN A YEAR. THE NEW BATTERY WAS REPLACED WITHIN A MONTH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DETERMINED THAT THE RADIO CAUSED THE BATTERY TO FAIL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT CALLED YORK VOLKSWAGEN (3475 E MARKET ST, YORK, PA 17402, (717) 755-1015) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NO GUARANTEE THAT THEY COULD REPAIR THE VEHICLE. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE COULD NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE KEY FAILED TO INSERT INTO THE IGNITION SWITCH. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR THE IGNITION FAILURE. VEHICLE IS PARKED WHEN THIS PROBLEMS ARE PRESENT. THERE HAS BEEN TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS ISSUED TO SOME 2006 JETTA OWNERS BUT NO TO EVERYONE BEEN AFFECTED BY THIS PROBLEM. THE DRIVER DOOR WIRING HARNESS IS TO SHORT AND IN TIME THE WIRES BREAK WHERE THE WIRES GO FROM THE BODY INTO THE DOOR. THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE 2005 AND 2004 YEARS FOR THIS PROBLEM.

THE OIL PAN IN THE ABOVE MENTIONED VECHILE THAT I OWN HAD TO BE CHANGED DUE TO A DESIGN PROBLEM. THE MANUFACTURER HAD PUT A ALUMINUM PAN WITH A STEEL BOLT. THE STEEL BOLT OVER THE YEARS CORRODED THE PAN NECESSIATING A REPLACEMENT OF THE PAN. FITZGERALD AUTOMALL (410-224-3480) IN ANNAPOLIS MD REPLACED THE PAN FREE OF LABOR BUT CHARGED ME FOR THE OIL PAN. THEY DID INFORM ME THAT IT WAS A DESIGN PROBLEM THAT VW HAS SINCE RECTIFIED IN THE NEWER MODELS AND THAT I HAD TO CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER FOR REIMBURSEMENT. WHEN I CONTACTED VW, THEY REFUSED TO REIMBURSE ME STATING THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. THEY INFORMED IT WAS UNDER THEIR DISCRETION TO RECTIFY THE DEFECT IN NEWER MODELS AND WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR OLDER MODELS. WHEN THE CONTACT STARTED THE VEHICLE, SHE HEARD A NOISE SIMILAR TO SOMETHING MOVING INSIDE THE ENGINE AFTER THE VEHICLE BEGAN VIOLENTLY SHAKING AND JERKING. WHEN SHE ATTEMPTED TO PLACE THE VEHICLE INTO GEAR, THE ENGINE RPMS WOULD ALSO INCREASE. THE VEHICLE WAS CAREFULLY DRIVEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHO INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE DUAL MASS FLY WHEEL HAD A HOLE IN IT WHICH CAUSED THE METAL TO FRACTURE THE BELL HOUSING AND DAMAGE THE TRANSMISSION. THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE FLY WHEEL AND INFORMED HER TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 67,000.

I AM LEASING A 2006 VW JETTA SINCE JAN. 2006. EVER SINCE, PERIODICALLY ONE OF THE DAYLIGHT HEADLIGHTS (MOSTLY THE RIGHT LIGHT) DOES NOT TURN OFF AFTER TURNING OFF THE MOTOR. I THEN TURN THE MOTOR BACK ON, MOVE THE CAR AND TURN IT OFF AGAIN. THE LIGHT WILL THEN TURN OFF. VW SERVICE IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM BUT COULD NEVER DETECT ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. 6 WEEKS AGO, MY BRAKE LIGHT WENT OUT AND THE BULBS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. ON FEB 3RD, THE DAYLIGHT HEADLIGHTS TURNED OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING. IT WAS VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE TOAS HAD A SNOWSTORM AND THE SUPPORTING HEADLIGHTS (SMALLER) WERE NOT SUFFICIENT ENOUGH. I CALLED VW HEADQUARTERS ON 2-3 AND EXPLAINED WHAT HAPPENED. I WANTED VW TO START A CASE ON IT, REPLACED THE HEADLIGHT BULBS AND CREDIT ME FOR THE BRAKE LIGHT I REPLACED EARLIER, BECAUSE I THINK THAT THE LIGHTING ISSUE COMES FROM ONE SOURCE. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH VW SERVICE FOR 2-5, BUT HAD TO RESCHEDULE FOR 2-12 DUE TO A SNOWSTORM. HOWEVER, MEANWHILE THE DAYLIGHT HEADLIGHTS TURNED BACK ON AGAIN (AFTER TWO DAYS OF NOT FUNCTIONING). I BROUGHT THE CAR TO HAVE THE LIGHTS CHECKED AND VW SERVICE WAS NOT ABLE TO FIND ANYTHING WRONG, BUT STARTED A CASE ON IT. MEANWHILE, VW HEADQUARTER CALLED AND TOLD ME THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. YESTERDAY AGAIN, THE LIGHTS DID NOT TURN OFF AFTER PARKING, AND I ALMOST HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP JUST TO PROVE THAT I AM NOT MAKING ANYTHING UP! MY CAMSHAFT AND LIFTERS WENT BAD AND WERE REPLACED IN 2015. IT WAS JUST AROUND 100,000 MILES. THEN I FOUND OUT TODAY THAT THEY WERE BAD AGAIN. MY UNDERSTANDING FROM THE MECHANIC IS THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM, AND LOOKING AT THE VOLKSWAGEN TDI FORUM, THAT YEAR IS PARTICULARLY BAD. THIS CAMSHAFT FAILURE CAUSED A LOSS OF POWER ON THE INTERSTATE DURING A HEAVY TRAFFIC TIME, BOTH TIMES. FIRST INCIDENT WAS ON I-240 IN ASHEVILLE MIDDAY. SECOND TIME WAS TRAVELLING WEST ON I-40 NEAR MORGANTON, NC IN EVENING TRAFFIC. LOSS OF POWER, SMOKING. I COULD BARELY GET OFF THE EXIT. I WAS LUCKY NOT TO HAVE IMPEDED TRAFFIC, BOTH TIMES.

WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE JULY OF 2015, GOING ABOUT 70 MPH, MY 2006 VW JETTA SHOOK AND LOST ALL POWER. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS OR ANY LIGHTS AT THAT MATTER CAME ON. PRIOR TO THIS I WOULD NOTICE THAT TAKING OFF SOMETIMES THE TURBO WOULDNT KICK IN AND I WOULD HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO POWER WHILE GETTING UP TO SPEED. THIS ALSO HAPPENED ON THE FREEWAY AND ONCE OFF OF THE FREEWAY I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND THEN ON AND WAS LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED. AFTER I LOST ALL POWER THE SECOND INCIDENT, I TOOK IT INTO THE SHOP AND WAS TOLD THAT 2 CYLINDERS WERE COMPLETELY DESTROYED. HAD TO SPEND 2400 DOLLARS TO HAVE A NEW MOTOR PUT IN AND NOW THE THING IS HAVING PROBLEMS AGAIN. BATTERY LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON AND OFF WITHIN A SECOND AND THERE IS A LOUD TICKING NOISE WHILE IDLING. SOUNDS LIKE A LOUD VACUUM IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHILE DRIVING IT. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS OR TEMPERATURE GAUGE INCREASES ARE PRESENT. I PURCHASED THIS 2006 VW JETTA TDI 1.9 TURBO DIESEL NEW IN 2006. AFTER ONLY 50K MILES, VW DEALERSHIP STATED THE TURBO CHARGER WENT BAD AND THE WARRANTY WAS INITIALLY REFUSED STATING IT WAS IMPROPER OIL USED. THIS WAS DISPROVED WITH RECEIPTS AND STILL CHARGED $500 OF A $2300 BILL. A FEW YEARS LATER NOW IN 2014,THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN IN FOR NORMAL SERVICE AND THE NEXT WEEK, ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE SAME THING HAPPENED AND VW STATES THE TURBO WENT BAD AND ARE GENERALLY ONLY GOOD FOR 50K MILES. AFTER SHARING MY ANGER ABOUT THIS, IT FELL UPON DEF EARS. I PURCHASED ANOTHER TURBO OUT OF CALIFORNIA, DUE TO NOT TRUSTING VW ANY LONGER. THIS NEW TURBO WAS INSTALLED AND DID NOT COME WITH THE WASTEGATE MODULE FOR IT WHICH IS REQUIRED FOR IT TO WORK. I SOON DISCOVERED THE WASTEGATE WAS BAD AND NEITHER OF THE TURBOCHARGERS WERE BAD, HOWEVER I HAD TO PURCHASE TWICE THE ENTIRE TURBOS SYSTEM FOR THIS ONE $35 PART THAT IS SOLD ON OTHER JETTA MODELS WITH MANUAL WASTEGATE BUT NOT THIS ONE. WAS GETTING HEAD ACHES WHEN DRIVING THE CAR AND SITTING IN TRAFFIC OR AT A STOP LIGHT. SMELLED A SULFUR LIKE SMELL FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. COULD HEAR LOUD BLOWING SOUNDS ON ACCELERATION. DEALERSHIP FOUND AN EXHAUST LEAK IN THE BACK OF THE DIESEL MOTOR FROM THE EGR COOLER ASSEMBLY. THE ENGINE WAS BLOWING SOOT IN TO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND IT COULD BE HEARD AND SMELLED THROUGH THE FIREWALL. THIS IS A DIESEL SO THE EXHAUST CONTAINS CARCINOGENIC CHEMICALS. DIESEL EXHAUST CONTAINS A NUMBER OF POTENTIALLY TOXICOLOGICALLY RELEVANT ORGANIC COMPOUNDS ACCORDING TO THE EPA THAT HAVE HUMAN HEALTH HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH EXPOSURE. THE EGR COOLER IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE 8 YEAR 80K FEDERAL EXHAUST EMISSION WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH IT IS A MANDATED PART OF THE EXHAUST SYSTEM AS PART OF THE EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION SYSTEM. A SHAFT GOING THROUGH THE WALL OF THE EGR COOLER CONNECTING TO A BUTTERFLY VALVE USED TO DIVERT THE EXHAUST GASES IN TO THE COOLER HAS A FAULTY SEAL THAT WILL FAIL AND ALLOW THE EXHAUST GAS TO EXIT THE EXHAUST IN TO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND GET IN TO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. THIS IS NOT ONLY AN EPA VIOLATION BUT A HEALTH HAZARD TO EVERY VW TDI OWNER OR PASSENGER. TO REPAIR THE ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP, THE EGR COOLER HAS TO BE REPLACED AT A COST TO THE OWNER OF $1000. WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH ON THE FREEWAY, MY DRIVERS SEAT BEGAN MOVING ON IT'S OWN. THE TOP PART OF THE SEAT PUSHED ME UP AGAINST THE STEERING WHEEL WHILE THE BOTTOM HALF PULLED ME BACK SO I COULDN'T REACH THE PEDALS. I HAD MY 2 YR OLD GRANDCHILD IN THE BACKSEAT AND BARELY MADE IT OFF OF THE FREEWAY. THE SEAT CONTINUES TO MOVE EVEN WHILE THE CAR IS OFF. THE TOW TRUCK REFUSED TO HELP BECAUSE OF LEGAL REASONS AND THE VW DEALER WANTS TO CHARGE ME $140 JUST TO LOOK AT IT BECAUSE IT'S NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS DEFECT THAT CAN CAUSE A VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENT. ABOUT A WEEK AGO, I NOTICED MY DRIVER'S SEAT WAS TOO FAR FORWARD, SO I USED THE SEAT ADJUSTMENT CONTROLS TO MOVE IT BACK TO WHERE IT WAS COMFORTABLE. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AND PERIODICALLY THROUGHOUT THE WEEK, WHETHER I WAS DRIVING (HIGHWAY OR LOCAL), STATIONARY, OR STOPPED (WITH THE ENGINE TURNED OFF!), THE SEAT BACK WOULD MOVE BACK AND FORTH, SOMETIMES LUNGING FORWARD 4-6 INCHES AND THEN BACK ABOUT 10 INCHES. THIS CAUSED ME, WHILE DRIVING, TO BE PRESSED ALMOST ON THE STEERING WHEEL OR AT FULL ARMS-LENGTH, BACK AND FORTH NUMEROUS TIMES. SOMETIMES PUSHING ONE/ANY OF THE SETTING BUTTONS WOULD STOP THE ROCKING FOR A SHORT TIME; SOMETIMES IT HAD NO EFFECT. THIS ISSUE IS OF SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN TO ME AS IT MAKES STEERING AND BRAKING/ACCELERATING VERY DIFFICULT AND NOT CONTROLLABLE. THERE MUST BE A RECALL ON THIS MODEL AS THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN REPORTED ON THIS SITE SINCE THE MODEL FIRST CAME OUT IN 2006! IT IS UNCONSCIONABLE THAT NO RECALL HAS YET BEEN ISSUED.

The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that brake fluid had leaked from her vehicle as the check engine light illuminated the instrument panel. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic where she was informed that the brake master cylinder needed to be replaced. Soon after repair, the failure returned. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 20E064000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) which she linked to the failure. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed her that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

THIS LETTER IS TO EXPRESS MY DISSATISFACTION WITH REAR BRAKE PERFORMANCE ON MY 2007 JETTA. THE SUMMARY IS EXTREMELY RAPID REAR PAD WEAR, WHILE THEN FRONT, WHICH HAVE THE WEAR SENSOR, REMAIN UNSCATHED. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND THE DEALER ADMITS ITS PART OF A ?SAFE BRAKING? DESIGN THAT TRIES TO MAKE THE CAR SQUAT RATHER THAN DIVE. THE PROBLEM IS, THIS IS AN UNCONVENTIONAL METHOD OF BRAKE APPLICATION (REAR BIASED WHEN PHYSICS HAS THE FRONTS NORMALLY DOING MORE WORK), COMBINED WITH A CONVENTIONAL BRAKE DESIGN THAT HAS SMALLER PARTS AND NO WEAR SENSORS IN THE REAR. THE RESULT OF THIS ?SAFETY FEATURE? IS THAT I CAN EXPECT TO WEAR OUT REAR PADS FASTER THAN FRONT, IN AS LITTLE AS 9-10K MILES. THE PROBLEM IS A REASONABLY MINDED PERSON WOULD NOT COME TO THIS CONCLUSION, AND THE LACK OF A REAR PAD WEAR WARNING SYSTEM CREATES A POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE. THE USER MANUAL DOES NOT WARN THAT REAR PADS MAY WEAR FASTER, AND IN FACT INDICATES THEY SHOULD BE INSPECTED EACH 10 K, OR WHEN THE FRONT WEAR SENSOR ILLUMINATES. BOTH OF THESE CASES MAY BE TOO LATE, LEADING AT BEST TO EXPENSIVE REPAIRS WHEN THE ROTORS ARE DAMAGED, OR WORSE, TO UNPREDICTABLE BRAKING IN AN EMERGENCY. IF I HAVE MY CAR INSPECTED AT 10K, AND THE REARS ARE STILL SERVICEABLE, I DO NOT BELIEVE THEY WOULD MAKE IT TO 20K. THE DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW STOPPED WORKING. THE PROBLEM WAS TRACED BACK TO A FAULTY WIRING HARNESS IN THE DOOR HINGE. THIS IS A VERY COMMON VW ISSUE, AND MANY OTHER ONLINE COMPLAINTS REFERENCE A WIRE HARNESS THAT IS TOO SHORT. I REPAIRED THE SEVERED WIRES WITH BUTT CONNECTORS. AFTER THE REPAIR WAS COMPLETED, THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. I INSPECTED THE WHOLE AIRBAG SYSTEM (CONNECTORS, WIRING, FUSES, ETC.) TO NO AVAIL. THE AIRBAG LIGHT IS STILL ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. AGAIN, OTHERS HAVE COMPLAINED OF THIS SAME ISSUE WHEN FIXING A VW'S WINDOW (I.E., FIX THE WINDOW AND THE AIRBAG LIGHT ILLUMINATES). THE TWO ISSUES SHOULD NOT BE CONNECTED, AND THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN FOR ME.

THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS FAILED AFTER BEING STUCK TO THE WINDSHIELD. THE MOTOR DID NOT HAVE TIME TO BURN OUT AS IT WAS INSTANTANEOUS WHEN I ACCIDENTALLY HIT THE WAND WHEN STARTING THE CAR. IN THE AREA OF THE RIGHT HOOD HINGE THERE IS A FLEXIBLE HOSE SECTION IN THE PLUMBING OF THE SYSTEM TO ALLOW FOR OPENING OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT HOOD WHILE MAINTAINING WASHER SYSTEM PLUMBING INTEGRITY. THE HOSE WAS SEPARATED WHERE IT BENDS BETWEEN THE ENGINE AREA AND HOOD, MAKING THE WASHER FLUID SYSTEM INOPERABLE. DEALERSHIP REPAIRED WITH A CONNECTOR. I NOTICED THAT THE SIDE WALLS OF MY CONTINENTAL TIRES ON MY 2006 VW JETTA WERE CRACKED(THERE WERE 25K MILES ON THE TIRES). I REPORTED THIS TO CONTINENTAL -MR. CARL WALKER. I REPLACED THE TIRES WITH BRIDGESTONES. I STILL HAVE THE ORIGINALS. I WAS TOLD TO TAKE THE TIRES TO MERCHANT'S TIRE ON WOODFIED ROAD IN GAITHERSBURG, MD AND HAVE THEM INSPECTED AND THE TREAD DEPTH MEASURED. I DID THIS IMMEDIATELY AFTER SPEAKING TO MR. WALKER. THE SALES REP. AT MERCHANT'S CALLED MR. IN A BRAND NEW CAR WITH "UP GRADED" CONTINENTAL TIRES GOING ABOUT 60 MPH THE TIRES DISINTEGRATED, THE CAR SPUN OUT OF CONTROL AND HIT HIGHWAY WALL. IT WAS A CLEAR TIRE MALFUNCTIONED AND AFTER SENDING TIRE TO CONTINENTAL NORTH AMERICA IN CHARLOTTE, NC THEY SAID THAT THEIR "INSPECTORS" FOUND NO FAULT. WE ASKED THEM TO RECONSIDER AND ENDED UP GETTING A $1,500 GOODWILL OFFER FROM THEM. NEEDLESS TO SAY WE HAD A RENTAL CAR FOR 8 WEEKS WHILE OUT CAR WITH $6,000 IN DAMAGES WAS FIXED. JUST THIS WEEK AS WE WERE ABOUT TO COUNTER OFFER AND GET AT LEAST OUT OF POCKET EXPENSES, SINCE ITS GOING INTO THE 2ND YEAR, ANOTHER "UPGRADED TIRE" SHREDDED. ENGINE DEVELOPED A RATTLING NOISE AT HIGHWAY SPEED, DECREASED PERFORMANCE, EXCESSIVE BLACK SMOKE COMING OUT OF TAIL PIPE, AND $1500 REPAIR BILL. DUAL MASS TRANSMISSION FLYWHEEL FAILURE ON A VEHICLE WITH 120,000 MILES RESULTED IN RATTLING NOISE IN THE TRANSMISSION, VIBRATION OF THE WHOLE VEHICLE AND $1200 REPAIR BILL. BOTH OF THESE ISSUES ARE WIDESPREAD. MULTIPLE OWNERS OF THIS YEAR/MAKE/MODEL HAVE EXPERIENCED THESE EXACT SAME ISSUES DUE TO POOR QUALITY PARTS ORIGINALLY INSTALLED BY THE MANUFACTURER. MANUFACTURER SHOULD RECALL THE AFFECTED VEHICLES AND FIX THESE ISSUES DUE TO THEM BEING WIDESPREAD. THERE ARE NUMEROUS DISCUSSIONS ON PUBLIC FORUMS OF THESE ISSUES AS WELL.

CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING A PROBLEM WITH THE BODY VALVE IN THE TRANSMISSION ON MY JETTA. THERE WAS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THIS PART THAT ENDED IN 2012. I AM EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM WITH MY CAR NOW AND IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD. MY CAR SHIFTS SO HARD BETWEEN 1ST AND 4TH GEAR AND WILL HAVE A SIGNIFICANT LAG TIME BETWEEN ACCELERATION WHICH DURING TRAFFIC, CAN CAUSE NUMEROUS PROBLEMS. VW WON'T OFFER ANY REIMBURSEMENT TO PAY FOR THIS TO BE FIXED BECAUSE IT IS OUTSIDE OF THE WARRANTY HOWEVER I THINK IT IS RIDICULOUS WHEN THEY KNOW THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE PART IN THE FIRST PLACE. TL * THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, THE MOUNTS SNAPPED THAT SECURED THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION. AS A RESULT, THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE STALLED AND WAS UNABLE TO BE RESTARTED. THE WIRING HARNESS IN THE PASSENGER FRONT DOOR HAS BROKEN. THE WINDOWS, LOCKS, AND BLINKER ON MIRROR DO NOT WORK AT ALL OR WILL WORK SPORADICALLY AND THE AIRBAG LIGHT IN THE DASH TURNED ON INDICATING THE AIRBAGS ARE DISABLED. A MECHANIC CONFIRMED IT WAS THE WIRING HARNESS AND IT WAS TEMPORARILY FIXED SO THE WINDOWS COULD BE ROLLED UP TO PREVENT ANY DAMAGE INSIDE FROM SNOW AND RAIN. I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM A SETTLEMENT COMPANY IN REGARDS TO THE WIRING HARNESS NEEDING TO BE REPLACED. THE LETTER STATES "..THE LEFT FRONT (DRIVER'S SIDE) DOOR OR ANY WIRING OR CONNECTORS THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED WHEN REPLACING SUCH WIRING HARNESS,..." I CALLED THE NUMBER TO ASK ABOUT THE REPLACEMENT OF MY WIRING HARNESS, AND WAS TOLD BECAUSE IT WAS THE PASSENGER DOOR IT DID NOT MEET THE QUALIFICATIONS. I HAVE SINCE RESEARCHED THE RECALLS ON THE 2006 VW JETTA WIRING HARNESS AND WHAT I WAS ABLE TO FIND, IT DID NOT SPECIFY A PARTICULAR SIDE, BUT STATED THE JETTA'S MADE IN THAT YEAR WHERE MANUFACTURED WITH THE WIRING HARNESSES BEING TO SHORT, CAUSING THE WIRES TO BREAK. THE DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW IN MY VEHICLE STOPPED WORKING COMPLETELY. WHEN I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER THEY TOLD ME THE CAUSE WAS A FAULTY DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR HARNESS. THERE WERE SEVERAL WIRES THAT WERE BROKEN OR ABOUT TO BREAK, AND THEY SUGGESTED I REPLACE IT IMMEDIATELY. I WAS QUOTED OVER $400 FOR PARTS AND LABOR. THIS ISSUE WAS RECALLED ON THE EARLIER MODELS, AND THEN FIXED ON THE 2008 AND LATER MODELS DURING PRODUCTION. HOWEVER THE 2006 AND 2007 MODELS ARE STILL AFFECTED BY THE PROBLEM. VOLKSWAGEN HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL FOR THIS CRUCIAL PART AND CONTINUES TO LET ITS CUSTOMERS PAY FOR THE DANGEROUS DESIGN FLAW IN THESE VEHICLES. PASSENGER DOORS DO NO LOCK WHEN MANUALLY TURNING KEY THE RIGHT FROM THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR, WHICH IS THE ONLY MANUAL KEYHOLE. THE PASSENGER DOORS THAT DO NOT LOCK CAUSE THE ALARM TO GO OFF WHEN OPENED. HIGH-BEAMS WHICH ARE USELESS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND CANNOT BE MADE FUNCTIONAL WITHOUT RENDERING THE STANDARD LOW-BEAM FOCUS UNACCEPTABLY SHORT IS A SAFETY HAZARD. CORRECTION SEEMS TO REQUIRE REDESIGNED COMPONENTS. UNACCEPTABLE BRAKE LIGHT REFLECTION IN REAR WINDOW. BRAKE LIGHT HOUSING AT TOP OF REAR WINDOW IS NOT FLUSH TO THE GLASS, BUT APPROXIMATELY 3/8THS OF AN INCH AWAY. THIS CAUSES A LARGE RED GLARE IN THE REAR WINDOW WHEN BRAKES ARE USED IN DARK OR NEAR-DARK SITUATIONS. DEALER SAID " ACCORDING TO DESIGN". I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD DUE TO THE OBSCURING OF VISIBILITY TO THE REAR WHEN BRAKES ARE IN USE. REAR-VIEW MIRROR DIMMING SWITCH DOES NOT ALIGN MIRROR WITH PREVIOUS SETTING. THIS REQUIRES DRIVER TO MOVE THE MIRROR AFTER SWITCHING TO DIM UPCOMING HEADLIGHTS.

AFTER RESEARCHING ON THE INTERNET, I FOUND THAT VW HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND HAS SENT OUT LETTERS TO CUSTOMERS THAT HAVE 2007-2010 VEHICLES WITH THIS SAME TRANSMISSION THAT THEY WOULD REPLACE THEIR DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSIONS UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY OR RE-IMBURSE THEM FOR REPAIRS IF DONE PRIOR TO THIS LETTER UP TO 100000 MILES. THE CAR JUMPS INTO GEAR AND LURCHES BECAUSE OF A HYDRAULIC BRAKE SWITCH IN THE MASTER CYLINDER THAT APPEARS TO TICK OR BE DELAYED IN TRANSMITTING THE ON /FF SIGNAL TO THE ACCELERATOR CIRCUIT WHICH DURING THE DELAY APPEARS UNRESPONSIVE AS IT IS DESIGNED NOT TO ALOW ACCELLERATING IN GEAR WHILE THE BRAKE IS ON. WHEN THE BRAKE SWITCH TURNS OFF , DELAYED UP TO 5 SECONDS, THE CAR LURCHES FORWARD AS THE DRIVER EXPECTS THAT THE ACCELERATOR IS NOT WORKING AND KEEPS PREASSING ON THE GAS. THIS LURCH IS VERY UNSAGFE AND CAUSED BY A STICKY OR DELAYED BRAKE SWITCH. I HAVE A 2006 JETTA THAT I JUST GOT FROM A FRIEND, THEY STATED THAT IT NEEDED SOME SENSORS LIKE THE MAF REPLACED. I SPENT THE 39.99 AND BOUGHT THE CARFAX REPORT AS WELL TO ENSURE IT WAS A GOOD CAR. EVERYTHING WAS GREAT UNTIL I DROVE IT FOR THE FIRST TIME LONGER THAN 20 OR 30 MINUTES. I STARTED TO EXPERIENCE THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPING WHEN IT GOT HOT AND THE GEARS NOT SHIFTING. AS I BEGAN TO LOOK UP THESE SYMPTOMS TO VERIFY WHAT THE ISSUE WAS I RAN INTO SOME VERY CONCERNING STATEMENTS. MULTIPLE SOURCES SAY THE CARS ARE KNOWN FOR HAVING BAD TRANSMISSIONS/ VALVE BODY ISSUES. HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE DRIVING 2006 VW JETTA 2.5 LITER AUTOMATIC CARS WERE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE HARD SHIFTING AND SLIPPING AND SOME WERE WORSE THAN THAT. MY CAR ONLY HAS 103,000 MILES ON IT AND MANY OF THESE OTHER VEHICLES WERE BETWEEN 75K AND 140K. HAVING TO HAVE ENTIRE TRANSMISSIONS REPLACED. I HAVE NOT HAD ANY ISSUES WHEN I'M ON THE HIGHWAY AND NOT NEEDING TO SWITCH GEARS BUT STOP AND GO TRAFFIC IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE IN. IT DISCOURAGES ME THAT SO MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THIS ISSUE AND A RECALL HAS NEVER BEEN ISSUED FOR IT. THERE IS NO WARRANTY ANYMORE . OUR 2006 JETTA TDI HAD AN AIRBAG FAULT. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A VOLKSWAGEN DEALERSHIP AND THEY TESTED THE AIR CODE AND FOUND OUT THAT THE PASSENGER OCCUPANT DETECTOR MODULE WENT BAD DUE TO A ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTION IN THE CIRCUIT. THE DEALERSHIP WAS NOT ABLE TO SAY IF THE AIRBAGS WERE GOING TO WORK ON NOT IN THE CASE OF A CRASH. VOLKSWAGEN IS REFUSING TO TAKE ANY OWNERSHIP OF KEEPING THEIR VEHICLE SAFE AND COVERING THE COST OF THE PART. I CONTACT VOLKSWAGEN USA AND THEY GAVE THE REASON THEY WILL NOT COVER THE PART BECAUSE I DID NOT HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO ,I TOOK MY JETTA TO THE VOLKSWAGEN DEALER IN REGARD TO FRONT AIRBAGS RECALL. THE LIGHT WOULD NOT GO OFF. THEY REPAIRED IT, BUT AFTER A YEAR THE LIGHT CAME BACK ON AND STAYED ON. AT 130,623 MILES OUR JETTA HAD TO HAVE THE CAMSHAFT AND LIFTERS REPLACED. THE LOBES ON THE CAMSHAFT HAD COMPLETELY WORN OFF AND THE LIFTERS HAD PITTED. I FEEL LIKE OUR DIESEL MOTOR HAS AGED PREMATURELY AND THERE IS AN UNDERLYING PROBLEM THAT VW IS IGNORING. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THIS MODEL AND YEAR. WE ARE HAVING BOTH REPLACED, BUT UNTIL THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM IS FOUND THERE WILL BE AN ISSUE AGAIN. VW MUST KNOW OF THIS PROBLEM. THEY STOPPED PRODUCTION OF THE TDI JETTA IN 2006. FIRST NOTICED THAT THE SUNROOF ON MY '06 JETTA TDI WOULD INTERMITTENTLY OPEN AND (SOMETIMES) CLOSE ON IT'S OWN. SINCE THEN MY DOOR LOCKS NO LONGER FUNCTION ON THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT AND REAR DOORS. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA DIESEL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP WAS MALFUNCTIONING AND CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO STALL. FILLED UP MY 2006 JETTA TDI AND DIESEL FUEL CAME OUT ALL OVER THE CAR AND THE GROUND. THE FUEL FILLER DESIGN WILL NOT ACCOMMODATE THE LARGER DIAMETER TRUCK DIESEL NOZZLE, BUT THAT'S ALL THERE WAS AVAILABLE AT THE SERVICE STATION (AND AT MOST SERVICE STATIONS ALONG THE INTERSTATE). WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL INCIDENTS WITH OUR 2006 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA 2.5 WHERE WE WOULD LOSE POWER AND THE VEHICLE STALLS OUT. OUR 2006 JETTA IS A GASOLINE 5-CYLINDER WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION AND HAS ONLY 45,000 MILES. IN JUNE OF 2010 WE FIRST NOTICED THE STALLING ISSUE WHEN DRIVING HOME AND IT STALLED OUT WHILE PULLING INTO THE DRIVEWAY. AFTER SITTING FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES WE WERE ABLE TO PULL IT INTO THE GARAGE. THE SECOND INCIDENT OCCURRED ON FRIDAY 7/30/2010, WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK (30 MILE COMMUTE) AT 45-55 MPH THE JETTA STARTED TO INTERMITTENTLY LOSE POWER BEFORE THE ENGINE COMPLETELY STALLED. THE BRAKE LIGHT STAYS ON AND WILL NOT TURN OFF RESULTING IN A DEAD BATTERY AND A VERY UNSAFE CONDITION WHILE DRIVING. I DROVE FOR A HALF A DAY WITHOUT KNOWING THE LIGHT WAS STAYING ON. A COUPLE OF PEOPLE HONKED AT ME, BUT I DID NOT KNOW WHY. I ALSO COULD NOT FIGURE OUT WHY MY CRUISE CONTROL DID NOT WORK. I FIGURED OUT THE BRAKELIGHT SWITCH WAS NOT WORKING WHEN I CAME OUT OF HOME DEPOT AFTER DARK AND I THOUGHT I LEFT MY LIGHTS ON. IT TURNED OUT IT WAS THE BRAKELIGHT SWITCH. I CALLED A VOLKSWAGON REPAIR SHOP AND THEY SAID THERE WAS A RECALL ON IT AND I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY. WHEN I CALLED VOLKSWAGEN DEALER SERVICE TO REPAIR IT, THEY DENIED ANY RECALL. I DID A LITTLE SEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND I NOW SEE THEY HAVE A HISTORY OF BRAKELIGHT SWITCH FAILURES ON JETTAS AND BEETLES. THEY TOLD ME MY VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY ALSO AS IT HAS 59,400 MILES ON IT AND IT IS A 2006 JETTA TDI. I BOUGHT THIS CAR THINKING IT WILL GO 250,000 MILES WITH NO PROBLEMS AND AM SADDENED BY THIS TYPE OF TREATMENT FOR A SAFETY ISSUE WHICH THEY HAVE A HISTORY OF. I HAVE DRIVEN MANY CARS OVER 250,000 MILES WITHOUT A BRAKE SWITCH FAILURE. IT SEEMS VOLKSWAGEN DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO REMEDY THE FAILURES ON THE MEXICAN MADE VEHICLES ON SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS A BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH WHICH SHOULD BE DESIGNED FOR A NEAR INFINITE LIFE SINCE IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. So it appears to be fine until about 30/45 mins drive time Then it starts shifting/slamming real hard and hesitates to shift in the next gear To the point where stopping and going isn’t an option or it slips After about 45 mins all the prnds lights turned on and did the same in manual mode.. I read someone it’s a valve body that leads to a faulty Tranny I’ve read almost 150 of the same exact accounts on here and Reddit With the same 2006 Vw Jetta 2.5 It’s too common of an issue Most of them were under 100k miles and never dealt with by the manufacturer Myself my car has roughly 168k miles and I’ve been working to fix it up I just got it a month or so ago And now I have to deal with this Honestly is sad that VW hasn’t been held accountable for an issue that is WAY TOO COMMON to not be their fault. I understand the car is almost 20 years old but a bunch of these accounts i were reading dated as far back as 2009 with 86k miles it’s a shame..

LOST FUEL ON ROAD AND GROUND. VW CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE SAYS MY VIN DOES NOT SHOW A RECALL FOR THIS BUT THE LEAK ISSUE IS POSTED ALL OVER INTERNET AND TDI FORUM SITES AND YOUTUBE. VW SHOULD RECALL THIS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. HOLE LOOKS LIKE A LESION OR A SORE THAT HIS BEEN RUBBED BY THE PLASTIC COVER ON THE WEAK METAL TUBE FUEL RAIL. THE VEHICLE HAS A LONG HISTORY OF THE THROTTLE BECOMING INOPERATIVE RESULTING IN NO-POWER (IDLE POWER STRICTLY SPEAKING) CONDITIONS. THAT CONDITION IS CLEARED WHEN THE CLUTCH PEDAL IS DEPRESSED AND RELEASED. RECENTLY THERE WAS AN INSTANCE OF UNCOMMANDED ACCELERATION: INSTEAD OF NO POWER, FULL POWER WAS APPLIED BY THE ENGINE. AGAIN CYCLING THE CLUTCH CLEARED THE CONDITION. THE NO-POWER CASES APPEARED MORE LIKELY IN URBAN DRIVING AND SOON AFTER A TRANSMISSION SHIFT BUT DID OCCUR UNDER ALMOST ANY CONDITIONS. THE FULL-POWER CASE OCCURRED ONCE, CLIMBING A HILL AT ~2800' ALTITUDE. THE POWER FAIL OCCURRED AS EARLY AS 34K MILES, AND CONTINUED WITH VW'S KNOWLEDGE UNTIL ~72K MILES, WHEN VW OF AMERICA TECHNICIANS FINALLY DID SOMETHING TO END IT. AFTER SOME TIME, PARTICULARLY DURING WET WEATHER, THE CAR WILL SUDDENLY VIBRATE, JOLT, AND THEN THE ENGINE WARNING CHIME SOUNDS. THE TACHOMETER DROPS TO ZERO, THE OIL PRESSURE LIGHT COMES ON, THE STABILITY CONTROL SHUTS OFF, THE GLOW PLUG LIGHTS FLASH, REAR WINDOW DEFROSTER WILL NOT WORK, CRUISE CONTROL WONT WORK, AND IF THE CAR IS SHUT OFF IT WILL NOT RESTART. THIS IS PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS DURING SNOW OR RAIN, AS THE CAR LOSES TRACTION CONTROL DURING WEATHER IN WHICH IT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO HAVE. ALSO, IF THE CAR DIES AND IS ON THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD, DURING RAIN OR SNOW, THERE IS POOR VISIBILITY AND IT INCREASES THE RISK OF SOMEONE HITTING THE DISABLED CAR. MY VW JETTA HAS HAD ISSUES LOSING ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING ON AND OFF, TYPICALLY WHEN IT RAINS OR THE ROADS HAVE BEEN SALTED AND IT IS SLUSHY OR SNOWING. THIS LAST WEEK I WAS DRIVING AND I LOST TRACTION CONTROL, CRUISE CONTROL, TACHOMETER, ABS BRAKES AND OIL PRESSURE. THE CAR WOULD NOT IDLE. RESEARCHING THE ISSUE, I FOUND THERE MAY BE AN ISSUE WITH THE WIRING HARNESS. I INSPECTED THE HARNESS AND DISCOVERED THAT SEVERAL WIRES HAVE BEEN CHAFED BY THE PLASTIC LOOM AND WORN THROUGH THE INSULATION, EXPOSING THE WIRES. I ALSO DISCOVERED THAT THE POSITIVE CABLE TO THE STARTER HAD CHAFED AND WORN THROUGH THE GROUND WIRE INSULATION CREATING A POTENTIAL HAZARD TO SHORT THE BATTERY.

I AM THE OWNER OF A 2006 VW JETTA TDI SEDAN. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE USED IN A PRIVATE SALE IN 2009. BY 2011 I WAS HAVING NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE. THE DUAL MASS FLYWHEEL FAILED JUST AFTER I HAD MY CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE TIMING BELT SERVICE (APPROXIMATE MILEAGE 106,000). I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED (AT MY EXPENSE) TO THE DEALERSHIP SINCE IT WASN'T SAFE TO DRIVE THE 130 MILES. DEALERSHIP SAID IT WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM BUT VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA HAS NOT OFFERED ANY ASSISTANCE. APPARENTLY SOMEONE HAS TO DIE TO GET THEIR ATTENTION. APPROXIMATE COST OF REPAIRS: $1,800. 2ND BIG PROBLEM IS ELECTRICAL. WIRING HARNESS IN THE DRIVER DOOR FAILED SOON AFTER I PURCHASED IT. IT STARTED WITH THE DRIVER WINDOW SWITCH NOT WORKING. THEN THE LOCK/UNLOCK BUTTON QUIT WORKING. THEN THE INTERIOR/EXTERIOR SAFETY LIGHTS. THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN FOR PAINT PROBLEMS IN THE GENERATION BEFORE THIS VEHICLE AND A 10-12 YEAR CORROSION WARRANTY THAT VW REFUSES TO HONOR. ADDITIONALLY, PROBLEMS WITH POOR MANUFACTURING PRACTICES AND MATERIALS ABOUND IN THIS VEHICLE. THE HEADLINER PULLS AWAY FROM THE PILLARS AT THE SEAMS IN THE REAR DUE TO DEFECTIVE MATERIALS. THE VEHICLE STALLS WHENEVER DRIVING IN WET CONDITIONS ON THE HWY WHILE SNOWING OR RAINING. I PROCEEDED TO CALL A NEARBY VOLKSWAGEN DEALER AND SPOKE TO TWO CERTIFIED VW MECHANICS, WHO FAILED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE ISSUE THAT THERE WAS NO WARNING INDICATION BEFORE THE CAR STARTED TO ACT UP AND SAID TO BRING IT IN TO SWAP OUT THE ENGINE AT APPROX. $7500; THEY DISMISSED THE PROBLEM AS "NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR". I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET AND IT LEAD ME TO BELIEVE THAT IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE CAM, WHICH I HAD CONFIRMED BY AN AUTO-MECHANIC AFTER TOWING THE CAR IN. HE TOLD ME THE ENTIRE ENGINE WAS WARPED DUE TO THE CAM GOING OUT. ALTHOUGH I DID LOOK ONLINE AND FOUND HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS WITH REGARD TO A "BROWN WIRE OR WIRES TOO SHORT INSIDE THE BOOT TO THE BODY CONNECTOR". MOST PEOPLE REPORT THAT EVEN AFTER A VW FIX, PROBLEM NOT RESOLVED. CAR NOT ACTING PROPERLY AND WITH ELECTRICAL AND HAVING BEEN IN A VW CAR FIRE DO NOT WISH TO REPEAT THIS SCENARIO. WE WERE DRIVING IN A RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBOR HOOD AT ABOUT 25MPH AND THE CAR SUDDENLY STOPPED ACCELERATING AS IF THE CAR WAS IN NEUTRAL. LUCKILY, WE WERE ABLE TO PULL OVER AND PARK. THE CAR WENT INTO FAIL SAFE MODE (WHICH I NOW KNOW). ABOUT 5 DIFFERENT ERROR LIGHTS WERE ON AS WELL AS THE GEAR LIGHTS FLASHING. PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND SHUT OFF THE ENGINE, LET IT REST AND THEN PROCEEDED TO RESTART WITH THE SAME ENGINE ERROR. THE CAR WOULDN'T REVERSE OR GO OVER 2ND GEAR. I CAN'T EVEN IMAGINE IF THIS HAPPENED ON THE FREEWAY IT HAS BEEN SERVICED REGULARLY AT MY LOCAL VW DEALER ON TIME AND IS NOW OUT OF WARRANTY. BOUGHT NEW VW JETTA SEDAN ON 08/17/06. ON 05/13/10 TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER BECAUSE OF CAR DECELERATING WHILE DRIVING I.E. DROPPING IN SECONDS FROM 60 MILES TO 20 MILES. IT WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER MULTIPLE TIMES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. DEALER ANSWER "UNABLE TO REPLICATE PROBLEM" UNTIL WARRANTY OF FOUR YEARS EXPIRED. THE PROBLEM CONTINUES EVEN AFTER THE CARBON ACCUMULATED ON THE THROTTLE WAS CLEANED AND THE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED. DUE TO UNSAFE TO DRIVE, REQUESTED FOR THE DEALER TO BUY THE CAR BACK AS A LEMON. HOWEVER, IN SPEAKING WITH VW CUSTOMER CARE THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE KNOWN ISSUE. TO SAVE MONEY AND LICENSING FEES TO BOSCH THEY HAVE CHANGED FROM COMMON RAIL SYSTEM MADE BY BOSCH (FEEDS THE DIESEL FUEL TO ENGINE WITH VERY HIGH PRESSURE) TO VW SYSTEM CALLED TDI PD: PUMP DUSE (OR PUMP-NOZZLE INJECTION). TO ACCOMMODATE THE INJECTORS INSIDE THE ENGINE, THEY HAVE CHANGED THE SPECS AND DIMENSIONS OF MANY PARTS, INCLUDING THE CAMSHAFT. THE CAMSHAFT INSIDE THIS ENGINE HAS THE ADDED ROLE TO DRIVE THE PD LIFTERS, APART FROM VALVE LIFTING AND CLOSING. I OWN THIS TYPE OF CAR VW JETTA 2006 TDI, AND THE CAMSHAFT WORE OFF AT 80,000 MILES, AND YES IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND IT COSTS $3000. OIL CHANGE AND FUEL FILTER REPLACED AT 53K MILES BACKGROUND: CAR WAS PURCHASED EARLY DEC 2009, WITH IN 2 WEEKS IT WAS AT THE DEALER FOR A NON START ISSUE. CAR WAS GARAGED OVER A 3 DAY WEEKEND AND NOT DRIVEN AT ALL. MONDAY MY WIFE GOES TO START IT AND IT WILL NOT START, AFTER TELLING ME I TRY FOR 3 MINUTES TO GET IT STARTED AND IT FINALLY STARTS. DRIVING ON I-95 IN JACKSONVILLE, FL, IT WAS RAINING WITH SOME POUNDING (APPROX. 1 INCH OF WATER) ON THE ROADWAY. I WAS MAINTAINING A SPEED OF 35-45 MPH WHEN THE EPC AND TRACTION CONTROL WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. AT FIRST THE CAR BEHAVED NORMALLY BUT AFTER ABOUT 5 MINUTES IT LOST POWER AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE ABOVE 1500 RPM. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO QUICKLY TAKE AN EXIT RAMP OFF THE FREEWAY AND COAST INTO A GAS STATION, THE CAR CONTINUING TO REFUSE TO ACCELERATE. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND WAITED FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES. I STARTED UP AGAIN AND DROVE AROUND THE GAS STATION AND THINGS SEEMED NORMAL AGAIN, ALTHOUGH THE EPC LIGHT WAS STILL ILLUMINATED. STOPPED AGAIN AND WAITED ANOTHER 5 MINUTES. UPON STARTING UP AGAIN, BOTH WARNING LIGHTS WERE GONE AND THE CAR BEHAVED AND ACCELERATED NORMALLY. THIS DEFECT COULD HAVE CAUSED ME TO GET STOPPED IN TRAFFIC ON A BUSY FREEWAY POSSIBLY CAUSING A CRASH AND INJURIES. THIS VEHICLE DESIGN ALLOWS FOR POOR REAR VISIBILITY IN GENERAL; HOWEVER, IT IS AMPLIFIED IN LOW LIGHT SITUATIONS WITH THE COMBINATION OF HIGH REAR HEAD RESTS, A GLARE ON THE BACK GLASS FROM THE THIRD BRAKE LIGHT, AND IF YOU HAVE A REAR SPOILER THIS MAKES FOR A REALLY BAD COMBINATION. NIGHTTIME VISIBILITY IN A JETTA IS THE EQUIVALENCE OF WEARING A BLIND FOLD. OH AND THE SALESMAN NEGLECTED TO MENTION THAT THE ALL WEATHER PACKAGE INCLUDED A TRUNK THAT WILL NOT SHUT OR STAY SHUT IN COLD WEATHER. EVEN THE REPLACEMENT LATCHES NEED REPLACING. VW IS MAKING BIG BUCKS ON THE CONSUMER HOPING TO SAVE A FEW DOLLARS WITH FUEL ECONOMY. VEHICLE FAILED TO START ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS DUE TO INSUFFICIENT BATTERY CHARGE. OWNER OBSERVED BRAKE LIGHTS INCLUDING CHMSL WOULD COME ON INDEPENDENTLY WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, SHUT OFF, AND UNOCCUPIED WITH NO BRAKE PEDAL APPLICATION. NO OTHER LIGHTS WERE ON AT THE SAME TIME INTERIOR, HEADLIGHTS, TURN SIGNALS WERE ON. THIS WAS PRESUMABLY THE CAUSE OF THE BATTERY DRAIN ISSUE. ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS AFTER JUMP STARTING THE VEHICLE OWNER OBSERVED LOSS OF POWER WHILE TRYING TO ACCELERATE. INPUT TO THE ACCELERATOR WAS MOMENTARILY INEFFECTIVE AND HAD TROUBLE MAINTAINING HIGHWAY SPEED. THE ENGINE DID NOT STALL AND NO FAULT CODES WERE GENERATED. POWER WAS RESTORED AFTER A FEW SECONDS, BUT THE SYMPTOMS WOULD OCCUR SEVERAL TIMES DURING A DRIVE. VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO A VOLKSWAGEN DEALERSHIP SERVICE FACILITY (LINDSAY VW IN STERLING, VA) ON 7/13/2007. THE OWNER DESCRIBED THE ABOVE SYMPTOMS TO THE SERVICE ADVISOR. THE OWNER WAS CALLED LATER ON THE SAME DATE AND TOLD THAT THE DEALERSHIP COULD NOT VERIFY THE CLAIM AND THAT NO REPAIR WAS PERFORMED. TOOK CAR TO A DIFFERENT DEALER (FAIRFAX VW) WHO CORRECTLY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A FAULTY BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH. THE REPAIR PART IS THE SAME PART USED IN THE RECALL. THE CAR WAS FIXED UNDER WARRANTY AND THE REPAIR INVOICE EVEN STATES "RECALL" ON IT BUT THE DEALER SAYS MY CAR IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL AND I NEVER RECEIVED NOTIFICATION.

THAT HAS LED TO A SLEW OF OTHER DIFFERENT PROBLEMS FROM MINOR RATTLES TO DANGEROUS EXHAUST LEAKS AND OIL LEAKS. CORPORATE VW WAS ONLY ABLE TO GIVE ME TWO MONTHS CREDIT ON MY LOAN WHICH FROM READING EVERYWHERE IS JUST THEIR WAY OF GETTING US TO SHUT UP. I LEASED MY 2006 JETTA 2.0 IN JANUARY 2006. CURRENTLY THE CAR HAS STALLED ON ME 4 TIMES AND I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS FAILED STARTS. THE VEHICLE FAILS TO START WHEN I USE THE MAIN KEY AND THE VALET KEY. THIS PROBLEM HAS BECOME PRETTY CONSISTENT NOW THAT I HAVE PUT MORE MILES ON THE VEHICLE. I AM NOW AT 20K AND ITS BEEN A HEADACHE ALL THE WAY. I CAN ONLY BE THANKFUL THAT WHEN THE CAR STALLED ON ME ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS THAT I WAS NOT IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THAT THEY CAN NOT IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM AND THEREFORE THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE. SUPPOSEDLY, THE CAR STARTS WITHOUT A PROBLEM WHEN IT IS IN THEIR SERVICE BAY. IN ADDITION, WHEN I FIRST GOT THE VEHICLE, MY BACK SEAT LATCHES WERE BROKEN CAUSING THE BACK SEAT TO LUNGE FORWARD DURING HARD STOPS AND TURNS. THIS MADE MY JETTA A TWO PASSENGER VEHICLE! ALSO, THE HAZARD LIGHTS AND SWITCHES WERE MALFUNCTIONING. THE FRONT SUSPENSION OR THE BRAKES MAKE A GRINDING NOISE OR THEY HAVE A LOOSE FEEL, I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO PUT MY FINGER ON IT YET. ON 2/1/06 I LEASED A NEW 2006 JETTA ONLY TO HAVE THE ENGINE NOT START ON 2/27/06. I WAS STUCK IN A GAS STATION PARKING LOT WITH A DEAD CELL PHONE AWAITING A TOW TRUCK FOR 1.5 HRS. THE CAR WAS BROUGHT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT. LATER THAT DAY THEY TOLD ME POSSIBLY A FUEL PUMP BUT WEREN'T SURE AND THAT I SHOULD ARRANGE FOR A RENT-A-CAR. THEY HAD THE CAR FOR 3 DAYS AND WHEN I PICKED IT UP THEY STATED IT WAS A PROGRAM THAT NEEDED TO BE UPDATED AND EVERYTHING IS FINE. IT IS NOW A WEEK AND A HALF LATER AND THE IGNITION KEY WOULDN'T TURN IN THE IGNITION. I CONTINUED TO SWITCH BETWEEN MY ALARM KEY AND MECHANIC KEY UNTIL IT FINALLY TURNED AND STARTED. ONCE ON THE ROAD THE CAR DIED IN MID DRIVE. THE ENGINE COMPLETELY TURNED OFF WHILE DOING ABOUT 25MPG. THANK GOD THERE WAS NO ONE AROUND ME, THE CAR CAME TO A STOP AND RESTARTED IMMEDIATELY AND DRIVEN BACK TO WORK. LEAVING WORK THE CAR DIDN'T TURN OVER AT ALL.
