THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE UNKNOWN.

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FREEZES INDICATIONS FOR LONG PERIODS INTERMITTENTLY. ODOMETER, TACHOMETER, SPEEDOMETER, ENGINE TEMPERATURE ALL FREEZE AT WHAT THEY WERE READING. THIS HAS BEEN A REPETITIVE, INTERMITTENT PROBLEM. BECAUSE OF LACK OF TRUE ENGINE TEMPERATURE READING, CAR WAS DRIVEN TO OVERHEATING. THE DEALER REPAIRED THE INTAKE MANIFOLD AGAIN AT THE CONTACTS EXPENSE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000 AND THE CURRENT WAS 91,351.

I JUST BOUGHT A 200 NISSAN ALTIMA. I WAS DRIVING TO HILTON HEAD AND 2 HOURS INTO THE TRIP THE CRUISE CONTROL WENT OFF AND THEN THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON. I KEPT GIVING IT GAS AND IT JUST STARTED SLOWING DOWN. WE GOT HIT FROM BEHIND AND SPUN AROUND. I BROKE MY NOSE AND MY GIRLFRIEND BROKE HER HIP IN 3 PLACES.

WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, ALL THE GAUGES EXCEPT THE FUEL GAUGES STOPPED FUNCTIONING; THEY DISPLAYED THE LAST READING THEY INDICATED BEFORE THE FAILURE. APPROXIMATELY FIVE MINUTES LATER, ALL OF THE GAUGES DROPPED TO A READING OF 0 EXCEPT THE FUEL GAUGES. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER SHUTTING THE VEHICLE OFF FOR A FEW HOURS, THE GAUGES BEGAN TO FUNCTION PROPERLY AGAIN. THE FAILURE CONTINUED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP BUT THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DIAGNOSED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE LAST TIME THE FAILURE OCCURRED, THE FUEL GAUGE ALSO MALFUNCTIONED. MY CAR STALLS WHILE DRIVING. IT SPUTTERS, MEANING I WILL HAVE MY FOOT ON THE GAS, THE RPMS WILL DROP TO 500, THEN WITH MY FOOT OFF THE GAS THE RPMS JUMP ALL THE WAY TO 2500! THIS SUDDEN ACCELERATION CAN PLOW ME RIGHT INTO A CAR, POLE, BUSY INTERSECTION, ETC. IT HAPPENS OFTEN. IT HAS HAPPENED TO ME WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 60 MPH, AND ON LOCAL STREETS AT 25 MPH. I PURCHASED 4 SIGMA REGENT 9M TIRES FROM TIRE KINGDOM IN 2003. THEY ONLY HAD 25,000 ON THEM AND 2 OF THEM BLEW OUT ON THE EXPRESSWAY ON 2 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. IT WASN'T A NORMAL BLOWOUT, AS 2 DIFFERENT MECHANICS ATTESTED. THE TIRE HAD WIRES COMING OUT EVERYWHERE. I CALLED TIRE KINGDOM AND THEY SAID THAT SINCE I DON'T HAVE THE TIRES (MY DAUGHTER HAD THE MECHANICS DISPOSE OF THEM AFTER BEING TOWED TO THE NEAREST SERVICE CENTER) THEY COULDN'T DO ANYTHING. I HAVE EXPERIENCED 2 DANGEROUS INCIDENTS OF SUDDEN UNANTICIPATED ACCELERATION WITH MY 2000 NISSAN ALTIMA SE [XXX]. THE FIRST, WITNESSED BY MY HUSBAND & SON, OCCURRED ON DECEMBER 26, 2003. APPROACHING A RED LIGHT, I SLOWED TO A STOP WITH MY FOOT SQUARELY ON THE BRAKE. THE ENGINE SUDDENLY RACED ALARMINGLY AND THE CAR TRIED TO LURCH THROUGH THE LIGHT. I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND THE ENGINE RACING INCREASED. I TURNED THE CAR OFF. THE HEAD MECHANIC AT OUR LOCAL DEALERSHIP HAD NO IDEAS. AGAINST MY BETTER JUDGMENT, I TOOK THE CAR BACK. THE NEXT WEEKEND, IT HAPPENED AGAIN. I PULLED BACKWARDS OUT OF A PARKING SPOT, PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE, AND THE ENGINE SUDDENLY TOOK OFF. THE RPMS REGISTERED WITHIN SECONDS UP TO 6500 RPMS. PUT IN NEUTRAL, THE RPMS INCREASED TO 7000 RPMS. I TURNED THE CAR OFF. I TOLD OUR LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIP THAT I WOULD NOT DRIVE THE CAR UNTIL THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AND FIXED. ON THE NISSAN HOTLINE (1-800-NISSAN-1), THE CUSTOMER RELATIONS REPRESENTATIVES TOLD ME: (1) THEIR TECHNICAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH THIS PROBLEM (NISSAN LATER SAID THAT, ALTHOUGH THEY HAD RECEIVED CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS, THEY HAD NEVER BEEN ABLE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM IN A SHOP); AND (2) IF THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE "REPLICATED" IN SHOP, THEN, IN EFFECT, "THERE WAS NO PROBLEM" AND NO REMEDY. I WENT ONLINE AND FOUND THAT S.U.A. IS A MAJOR PROBLEM NATIONALLY. I COULD NOT DRIVE THIS CAR, COULD NOT ALLOW A FAMILY MEMBER TO DRIVE THIS CAR, AND COULD NOT SELL THE CAR. AFTER ALMOST SIX WEEKS WITHOUT MY CAR, I TRADED IT BACK TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AT CONSIDERABLE LOSS WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT THEY WOULD CONTINUE TO TRY TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND WOULD NOT RE-SELL THE VEHICLE TO AN UNINFORMED CONSUMER. I HAVE NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT IN THIS CAR BUT HAVE BEEN MADE TO TAKE IT IN TO 3 DIFFERENT DEALERS ON 8 TO 10 OCCASIONS...EVERYTIME I TAKE MY CAR IN -THEY INSPECT AND TELL ME MY BRAKES ARE DUSTY OR GLAZED AND OR NEED ADJUSTING. ONE DEALERSHIP EVEN REPLACED THE ENTIRE BRAKING SYTEM IN AUGUST 2001- IN DECEMBER 2001 - ANOTHER DEALERSHIP IS TELLING ME THAT THERE IS NO WAY THE BRAKING SYSTEM WAS REPLACED BECAUSE MY BRAKES WERE VERY WORN AND GLAZED/DUSTED OVER AGAIN OR THAT THERE IS SOME KIND OF PROBLEM CAUSING THE BRAKES TO WEAR AT AN AMAZINGLY FAST RATE!!!!!!!!! I HAVE WRITTEN A 7 PAGE LETTER -SENT COPIES OF SERVICE BILLS - REQUESTED A REPLACEMENT VEHICLE -BEEN FRUSTRATED WITH SERVICE-WASTED MANY HOURS FROM WORK, AND HOME IN DEALING WITH DEALERSHIPS AND NISSAN NORTH AMERICA AND NEIGHTER WILL ADMIT THAT THEY EITHER CAN'T FIX THE PROBLEM OR THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO FIX IT. WHILE DRIVING THE DASHBOARD GOES OUT COMPLETELY. YOU CAN NOT TELL HOW FAST YOU'RE GOING OR WHAT THE RPM IS OR ANYTHING, INCLUDING THE GAS GAUGE. I BOUGHT THIS 2000 NISSAN ALTIMA NEW. SINCE APPROXIMATELY DECEMBER OF '03 THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER HAS REPEATEDLY (TOO MANY TIMES TO KEEP TRACK OF) MALFUNCTIONED AT ARBITRARY TIMES GIVING EITHER NO INFO (GAUGES ALL GO TO 0) OR INCORRECT INFO (130 MPH AT 1K RPM W/NO WATER TEMP AND SUDDENLY FULL TANK OF GAS). PROBLEM CAN LAST ANY WHERE FROM MINUTES TO 24 HOURS+. THE CRUISE CONTROL ALSO MALFUNCTIONS WHENEVER THIS OCCURS. FIRST TOOK TO DEALER ON 12/31/03, THEY COULD NOT DIAGNOSE PROBLEM, TOLD ME TO BRING IT BACK WHILE MALFUNCTIONING. FINALLY WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR WHILE MALFUNCTIONING TO SAME DEALERSHIP ON 8/1/05. PROBLEM HAS STARTED TO INCREASE IN FREQUENCY AND DURATION. THE SECOND THEY HOOKED DIAGNOSTIC EQUIP TO IT THE CLUSTER CORRECTED. THEY KEPT FOR 2 DAYS, DID NOT MALFUNCTION AGAIN SO THEY COULD NOT DIAGNOSE 100%. THEY WANT TO TRY REPLACING THE SPEEDOMETER HEAD AT $320, BUT 1) CAN'T GUARANTEE IT WILL SOLVE PROBLEM AND 2) CAN'T GET PART. THEY ESTIMATE 6-8 WKS MINIMUM TO GET PART. AFTER THE FIRST MONTH I OWNED THE CAR (BOUGHT AS A PREOWNED VEHICLE) THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON DURING THE GUAGE FAILURES I HAD THE CODE CHECKED AND IT WAS DETERMINED THE SPEED SENSOR WAS BAD. I BOUGHT AND REPLACED THE SPEED SENSOR WITH AN OEM PART. HOWEVER THE GUAGE FAILURE WAS NOT FIXED IT STILL HAPPENS. THE INCIDENT DATE STARTED 21FEB2003 AND STILL PERSISTS AND THE NUMBERS OF FAILURES I HAVEN'T KEPT COUNT BUT ABOUT AVERAGE OF EVERYOTHER DAY IT GOES OUT.

THE CAR FRONT END HAS BEEN MAKING STRANGE NOISES, I TOOK THE CAR TO A NISSAN DEALER ON MAY 15,2012 FOR OIL CHANGE AND INSPECTION. THE DEALER FOUND OUT THAT THE CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE BECAUSE THE LEFT FRONT STRUT TOWER IS SEPARATING FROM THE CAR. I WAS VERY SHOCKED TO KNOW THAT BECAUSE THE CAR DIDN'T HAVE ANY ACCIDENT OR HIT. ON 3/5/2012, I HAD A VEHICLE SAFETY INSPECTION. EXCESSIVE PLAY IN THE FRONT END WAS NOTED. I TOOK MY CAR TO MONRO MUFFLER WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PLACED ON A LIFT AND THE UNDERSIDE INSPECTED. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE SUBFRAME WAS SO BADLY CORRODED BY RUST THAT THE FRAME HAD PERFORATED AND BROKEN AWAY FROM THE SUSPENSION. THERE ARE HOLES THROUGHOUT AS WELL AS BREAKAGE AND WEAKENING. MONRO MUFFLER RECOMMENDED I CONTACT NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS WHICH I DID. I EXPLAINED THE SITUATION TO NISSAN STATING THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE. I WAS DIRECTED BY NISSAN TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A NISSAN DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSIS WHICH I DID. NISSAN OF DARTMOUTH, MA CONFIRMED MONRO MUFFLER'S DIAGNOSIS AND QUOTED A MINIMUM $2,300 TO REPAIR BOTH THE FRONT AND REAR SUBFRAMES. BEVERLY BANSEK OF NISSAN CALLED ME BACK TO INFORM ME THAT NISSAN WOULD DO NOTHING FOR THE REPAIR. I ASKED FOR A SUPERVISOR AND I WAS THEN CONTACTED BY THE REGIONAL SUPERVISOR OF NISSAN, VAUGHN FRANCIS WHO, AFTER REVIEWING MY CLAIM AGAIN, STATED THAT NISSAN WOULD DO NOTHING FOR ME AND THAT THE DISINTEGRATION OF THE SUBFRAMES WAS DUE TO A LACK OF OWNER MAINTENANCE RATHER THAN A DEFECT IN WORKMANSHIP. VAUGHN FRANCIS THEN STATED THAT THERE WAS NO NEED FOR ME TO CALL NISSAN AGAIN AS I WOULD ONLY GET HIM AND THE ANSWER WOULD BE THE SAME AND THAT MY ONLY OPTION WAS TO CONTACT THE BBB AUTOLINE DISPUTE RESOLUTION DIVISION AT 1-800-955-5100 WHICH I HAVE DONE. TWO NISSAN DEALERSHIPS STATE THERE IS NO OWNER MAINTENANCE RECOMMENDED ON THE SUBFRAMES OF NISSAN'S VEHICLES. IT IS MY BELIEF THAT THE FAILURE OF THE SUBFRAMES IS DUE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION OF THE SUBFRAME WHICH HAS LEAD TO PERFORATION POSSIBLY FROM THE INSIDE OUT AND BECAUSE THIS IS AN ISSUE OF WORKMANSHIP, NISSAN SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED FOR A POSSIBLE SAFETY RELATED DEFECT RESULTING FROM INADEQUATE MANUFACTURER'S CORROSIVE RESISTANT PROTECTION AND/OR SUBFRAME DESIGN.

I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND ALL SEEMED NORMAL, UNTIL I PULLED INTO A GAS STATION TO REFUEL. SURPRISINGLY I COULD NOT GET MORE THAN 1/4 GALLON INTO THE TANK BEFORE THE PUMP KICKED OFF AND GASOLINE SPIT OUT OF THE FILLER NECK AND ALL OVER THE GROUND. MY FUEL GAUGE WAS AT ABOUT 1/4 TANK, SO I KNEW I NEEDED ABOUT 11 GALLONS. I CONTINUED TO PUT FUEL INTO THE TANK AT A VERY SLOW RATE, AND THE PUMP KEPT KICKING OFF AND FUEL SPITTING OUT OF THE TANK FILLER NECK. I FINALLY GOT 8 GALLONS INTO THE TANK AND SO I STOPPED THERE. SHORTLY AFTER LEAVING THE GAS STATION MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I GOT HOME AND HOOK UP MY CODE READER, AND IT RETURNED A CODE P1441. SOME PROBLEM WITH THE EVAP SYSTEM. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT NISSAN DEALERSHIPS HAVE A SERVICE BULLETIN ABOUT THIS PROBLEMS DATING BACK QUITE A FEW YEARS, BUT DO NOT WANT TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM FREE OF CHARGE. DEALERS WANT ABOUT $100 TO ANALYZE THE PROBLEM AND ABOUT $400 TO REPAIR THE CAR. OKAY I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE DEAL WITH NISSAN AND THEIR RECALLS, BUT THEY DEFINITELY NEED TO MAKE A RECALL ON THE 2000 ALTIMA INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET. MY CAR STARTED IDLING AT VARYING RPMS UNDER 1 GRAND AND STARTED VIBRATING IN A STRANGE WAY. WHEN I GIVE MY ALTIMA SOME GAS TO TAKE OFF, IT COMES TO THE VERGE OF STALLING. I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE PROBLEM AND READ A FEW HUNDRED SEPARATE CASES WHERE THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED. THE CLOSER THE GASKET WAS TO THE NUMBER 1 CYLINDER IT REMAINED MORE PLIABLE. OBVIOUSLY THE GASKET SEEMS TO HOLD UP BETTER CLOSER TO CYLINDER 1 BECAUSE IT IS COOLER THERE - THAT IS WHERE THE PASSAGE FOR THE COOLANT IS. THIS PROBLEM CAUSES A P0304 CODE TO GET THROWN. THAT IS A MISFIRE AT CYLINDER 4. AGAIN, IF THIS WERE SOME RANDOM PROBLEM - COULDN'T WE REASONABLY EXPECT A NORMAL DISTRIBUTION OF THE CYLINDER MISFIRE CODE FROM P0301, 302, 303, AND 304? I STARTED TO BRAKE MY VEHICLE WELL BEFORE A RED TRAFFIC LIGHT. IN THE LINE OF TRAFFIC, I WAS BRAKING FIRMLY BUT MY VEHICLE WOULD NOT COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. AT THE RED TRAFFIC LIGHT, MY VEHICLE KEPT BUMPING A BMW IN FRONT OF ME. I BEGAN HONKING MY HORN FOR THE DRIVER OF THE OTHER VEHICLE TO MOVE FORWARD, BUT SHE DID NOT. WITH MY FOOT CONSTANTLY ON THE BRAKE, I PUT MY VEHICLE INTO PARK. WHEN I DID THAT, IT ACCELERATED MORE. A MAN IN A TRUCK IN THE NEXT LANE SAW THAT I WAS HAVING DIFFICULTY BRAKING, SO HE SHOUTED TAHT I SHOULD TURN OFF MY IGNITION. I DID. THE VEHICLE FINALLY STOPPED. THE DRIVER OF THE BMW APPROACHED MY CAR ASKING WHAT WAS GOING ON. THE MAN IN THE TRUCK VERIFIED TO HER THAT I WAS BRAKING, BUT COULDN'T STOP MY VEHICLE FROM BUMPING HER. WE EXCHANGED INFORMATION. I DROVE MY VEHICLE TO MY SERVICE MECHANIC NEARBY. HE COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER THE NEXT DAY. THE DEALERSHIP MECHANIC CHECKED THE VEHICLE AND A DTS WAS ALSO CALLED TO INSPECT MY VEHICLE. THE ALSO COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES, BUT THEY DID FIX MY AIR CONDITIONER. IT WAS LEAKING INSIDE THE CAR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THE RUG WAS COMPLETELY SOAKED. THE ALSO COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. THE VEHICLE IS NOW PARKED (DELIVERED BY DEALERSHIP) IN FRONT OF MY HOME BECAUSE I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE IT. I HAVE DONE RESEARCH ABOUT THESE EPISODES CALLED "SPONTANEOUS ACCELERATION". I ALSO SEE THAT YOU HAVE COMPLAINTS SIMILAR TO MINE THAT SUGGEST THE SAME PROBLEM EXISTS IN OTHER ALTIMA'S, AS WELL AS OTHER MAKE AND MODEL VEHICLES. HOPEFULLY, YOU WILL INVESTIGATE THIS MATTER. I REFUSE TO BECOME A FATALITY STATISTIC BY TAKING THE CHANCE OF DRIVING MY CAR AND HAVING THIS UNPREDICTABLE EVENT OCCUR AGAIN. NOR DO I WANT TO HURT ANYONE ELSE. I WANT NISSAN TO REPLACE MY VEHICLE.
