2021 GENESIS GV80 Problems & Complaints

Subject: Safety Complaint – Fuel Door Malfunction on Genesis Vehicle Dear NHTSA, I am writing to formally file a safety-related complaint regarding a fuel door malfunction on my Genesis vehicle. This defect has left me unable to access the fuel tank, presenting a serious safety risk—particularly the possibility of being stranded without fuel, which poses a threat to both driver and passenger safety. I have been informed by both Genesis Customer Care and the Genesis dealership in Huntsville, Alabama that this issue is common and recurring across multiple Genesis models. It is not the result of wear and tear, and is unrelated to mileage. This is a design or mechanical flaw that directly compromises vehicle operability. Despite acknowledgment that this is a known defect, Genesis has refused to resolve the issue under warranty, even though it is clearly a safety-related failure. I have attempted to escalate the matter internally, but have encountered delay, avoidance, and a refusal to take accountability. If this defect were to leave me or my family stranded without access to fuel—especially in extreme weather or on a busy highway—it could result in severe consequences. I believe this issue merits formal investigation and potential recall consideration. I respectfully request that the NHTSA review this issue and consider initiating an investigation to determine whether a recall or safety bulletin is warranted. On two occasions in the last month the car has suffered a loss of power with the accelerator unresponsive to input. After 5-10 seconds of this still actively occurring the car began to shake violently while I was trying to find a safe place to stop the car out of the traffic lanes. Within a minute or so things would go back to normal. The first time I was in a 35mph zone so the car was relatively controllable but unable to keep at speed. The second time was on the interstate at 70mph in heavy traffic. The car reacted much more dangerously at this speed. The loss of power was more severe and the violent bucking and shaking of the car was very severe. I thought parts would start falling off the car at any moment, it was that violent. With my emergency flashers on I was able to exit the interstate without accident or injury but there was a bit of luck involved. It could have just as easily gone very badly in the heavy traffic. There is an open recall on the Genesis GV80 for the fuel pump needing replaced for this exact type of occurrence. [XXX] ). While my VIN is not part of the formal recall I feel 100% certain that this is the same exact issue. Numerous others with GV80's have had and are still having the exact issue. The car was dropped at the dealer (Genesis Bedford OH) last week. They kept the car for a week but were unable to duplicate due to the randomness of the issue. They returned the car without fixing the issue. They never mentioned anything about the GV80 fuel pump issue. I have an open case ([XXX]) with Genesis but they are refusing to replace the fuel pump or rectify the issue in any way. As is noted in the recall of the fuel pump this issue does not cause any check engine lights to activate nor is Genesis storing any type of code from the issue. The recall clearly states that a car with this fuel pump issue should not be driven. Genesis is currently refusing to assist me in getting the car fixed. The fuel cap never opens up right away. It is not an emergency, but it is very time consuming, trying to repeatedly lock and unlock my door several times before the fuel door is released. I am unsure of what to do. It states that the driver's side door must be unlocked before the fuel door is released, I have to lock/unlock my door multiple times before the cap is released.

PURCHASED BRAND NEW AND WITHIN 1,000 MILES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED WHILE DRIVING. TOOK TO DEALER AND THEY DETERMINED IT WAS DUE TO DEFECTIVE FUEL INJECTOR SYSTEM. BACKORDER ON PARTS, SO THE CARE HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR AS LONG AS WE HAVE OWNED IT. WONDER IF SIMILAR ISSUE TO THAT WHICH LED TO RECALL OF THE 2021 G70?

Genesis 2021 GV 80 2.5 4 cylinder. Engine light on for the 3rd time. previous fixes did not fix the problem. Reported it to the corporate office. Still waiting after one week to have some one contact. No resolution to the problem yet.

The contact owns a 2021 Genesis GV80. The contact stated that while stopped at a turning lane, the engine warning light was illuminated. The engine control system warning message had appeared on the display screen. The contact also received an email from the manufacturer that a possible condition had been detected within the engine control system and a full check was needed whenever convenient with a preferred dealer. The dealer was made aware of the failure on numerous occasions but had not called the contact back. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to take the vehicle to a dealer for diagnosis. The failure mileage was approximately 1,900.

The contact owns a 2021 Genesis GV80. The contact stated while driving 35 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The technician disengaged the check engine warning light senor however, the failure recurred three times. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximate 300

UNDER 30 DAYS OF PURCHASE AND UNDER 1000 MILES - CHECK ENGINE LIGHT KEPT COMING ON-A POSSIBLE CONDITION WITH YOUR ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM. TWO TRIPS TO SERVICE DEPARTMENT, PART IS ON BACK ORDER UNTIL JUNE. SERVICE DEPT HAS VEHICLE FOR LONGER THAN I HAVE OWN THE CAR.

2021 gv80. Drivers side headlight failed while on vacation. Had newly formed condensation in headlight and must have shorted it had to drive back home with no turning signal and no headlight. Had the shop look at it when I got home and confirmed the unit was bad. Dealer is charging around 2,500-3,000.00 for headlight replacement

Seal on headlight and turn signal failed during a rainy day letting Condensation into assembly and burned out unit. Dealer verified the issue and wants $4200 for the part plus labour and taxes. Many complaints online about same problem. 0

The component that failed is the driver side headlamp and blinker. It collected condensation from a manufacturer defect that Genesis will not take accountability for. They over tightened the screws which caused hairline cracks in the assembly, which then causes condensation in the housing. The condensation cause the headlight and blinker to stop working altogether. This is a major safety issue and put me at risk of danger from cars not knowing where I am turning, or not being able to see me at all without a headlight. No, it doesn't need confirmed. It is not hard to tell when a headlight is out. There is literally no light.

The contact owns a 2021 Genesis GV80. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the horn independently activated. The contact stated that the failure had occurred several times. In addition, the driver's side door had to be unlocked, and additional tasks were performed to disable the horn. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the failure was not duplicated. The contact believed that the failure was due to the rear seat sensor. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.

Safety Issues: • Battery runs out of charge within one day without any rational reason (i.e., no lights, no alarm, no equipment in use) which put me at risk since the car would stop at any time without any warning. • Then, the Genesis Connected Services will sent alert messages every three (3) minutes for minor events (e.g., washer fluid low, window open, door unlocked…). Those same two problems were reproduced at HYUNDAI RICK CASE DAVIE FL – Official Agent even after two GENESIS FIELD SERVICE ENGINEERS changed the following parts (between May 203 and August 2023): i.JUNCTION BOX ASSY (Ref. 91950-T6032): The junction box assemble is the main fuse box on the driver’s side under the dash. ii.JUNCTION BLOCK-SUB (Ref. 91957-T6500): The junction box sub assembly is the fuse box location in the rear of the vehicle on the driver’s side. iii.AUDIO UNIT (Ref. 96560-T6600): The radio and navigation unit. iv.EXTERNAL AMP ASSY (Ref. 96370-T6700): The power amplifier for the audio unit. Timeline: On [XXX] [XXX] and [XXX] , my SUV (2021 GV80 3.5T Prestige, V6, AWD) was dropped at GENESIS official agent facility (RICK CASE DAVIE, FL) to be inspected and repaired based on the non-conformities described above. On [XXX], BBB AUTOLINE ARBITRATION rules for a REPLACEMENT that manufacturer (GMA) refused to execute. On [XXX], after arbitration, FLORIDA ATTORNEY GENERAL BOARD ordered to manufacturer (GMA) to provide a REPLACEMENT vehicle. The 40-day notice ended on [XXX]: The manufacturer still did comply with the order, and did not provide any replacement. FYI: Manufacturer did not appeal any of the arbitration decisions (BBB & FL STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL). My Lemon Car vehicle (subject of this claim) is still immobilized at the official agent (RICK CASE DAVIE, FL) since [XXX], totaling 310 days, without getting any loaner of replacement as clearly requested since [XXX] when I filled my initial claim with the MANUFACTURER (GMA). Child window and door locks malfunction along with mirror controls and all window controls from driver door panel. Repeated random events have occurred

The contact owns a 2021 Genesis GV80. The contact stated while attempting to refuel the vehicle, the fuel tank door switch failed to function as intended. The contact stated that the fuel tank door switch failed to unlock the fuel door. Additionally, the contact stated that the failure had occurred while on a road trip. The contact stated that he and his family were stranded for hours. The contact ripped the fuel tank door off and was able to refuel the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The vehicle was scheduled for an upcoming inspection. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 21,000.

The contact owns a 2021 Genesis GV80. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V630000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted and determined that the next appointment the have is for mouths away. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not available. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

The contact owns a 2021 Genesis GV80. The contact stated that the fuel cap was intermittently stuck and failed to open as needed to refuel the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 19,000.

MY HEADLIGHT WENT OUT. IT HAS WATER CONDENSATION IN IT DECEMBER 2023 NEEDS TO BE RECALLED

I have had my GV80 prestige since 2021. Recently the headlights started developing moisture in them. I found out this is an issue with a lot of the genesis. The lights are poorly designed causing water to flow down through the headlights into the light module which makes all the lights on that side of the vehicle inoperable. The vehicle will not pass safety inspection. Currently Genesis advertise that they are out of stock on the drivers side light. So you will be without a vehicle until they make more. My car is currently sitting at the Genesis dealership waiting on parts. This has happened to a lot of genesis owners. Should be a recall item, but it’s not. I

While driving at low speeds (less than 50mph) the Forward Collision Warning randomly activates. Sometimes its just a warning and sometimes its a warning and forced braking. I was able to capture a video of this. Please see link below. Genesis GV80 2.5 T standard option Forward collision warning software problem. These vehicles are sold with this option but not showing on settings, therefore it is not usable. Similar complaints are known with 21 model G80, GV80, G90. I believe this problem is recorded as T17G.

Drivers side rear seat seat belt bolt came out

The contact owns a 2021 Genesis GV80. The contact became aware that the VIN was included in Hyundai Campaign Number: 012G, however, the parts to do the recall repair were not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

Condensation has appeared in the driver side headlight. It has caused the headlight and blinker to stop working. In addition, several warning lights have appeared on the dash indicating the following operations are no longer working.... Driver Attention Warning System, Forward Safety System, Lane Change Assist system, Lane Departure Warning System and High Beam Assist. While the driving assist systems may be optional functions, the lack of headlight and blinker are, in my opinion, safety issues. Certainly, the car would not pass a safety inspection in the state of Virginia and, as a result, I would not be able to register the vehicle. Genesis has known of the headlight condensation problem for years and has issued several TSB's, yet they continue to build cars with a known safety issue. In my opinion, a safety recall should be implemented and Genesis should be required to repair the problem at their expense.

my cluster went black. No dash lights. No speedometer. no odometer. no cruiz control nothing works. the 2022-23-124 47,000 have been recalled .. Why not the 2021? Its the same part.. tHIS IS A DISASTER. TOTALLY UNSAFE TO DRIVE .

I have genesis GV 80 3.5 AWD. They gave 3 year connected service feature then after we have to pay every year. I not took this service, I realize it not showing any maintenance or oil change notification. When I contacted genesis on 844-340-9741 then they even don't pull when last oil change done. They said you must pay for connected service then maintenance service will show. This is basic feature it must show without additional charge. When contacted them on toll free number they told me you have manual so calculate by your self every 7500 miles need to change oil. It's written in manual. Otherwise it will not show until you not pay money. Who going to check manual? This is basic feature "MAINTENANCE REQUIRED" even coming in my Toyota corolla.

As I was exiting a driveway onto a 4 lane highway(2 lanes, divider, 2 lanes) I was attempting to enter into the nearest lane when my car completely pulled the wheel into the outer lane where an oncoming vehicle was and there was impact deploying airbags. I did not have the driving assist engaged. My vehicle was totaled and I had injuries requiring emergency care.

I was driving approx 15 MPH i drove through a S turn in a residential area at slow speed . Suddenly my vehicle lost power and I hit a parked car . The right front corner was damaged. The driver side airbags, deployed the passenger side air bags did not deploy automatic break did not work. The safety warning did not go off . The vehicle was taken to my yard where it was later taken to a body shop, I found out later this shop was not an approved Allstate shop which was a mistake with Repair was done poorly, and not completeld I don’t think it’s safe to drive. The air bags have not been replaced . There is a headlight still Not working since the accident There is no reason for me to crash that day. I was wide awake just woke up. The car just did not handle properly. Something went wrong and now I find out that this vehicle make model is being recalled for fuel pump failures, which is causing loss of power in accidents. That’s exactly what happened in my car. Genesis needs to take responsibility for this vehicle as it has with other similar vehicles. This Vehicles has not been inspected for this with the dealership. I’ve taken it to them. They say there’s nothing wrong.That would be Genesis of Las Vegas .

I was driving my Genesis GV 80 in January and in the Trac near my work and I came out of a s turn and the car seemed to over correct and lost power.. I hit a parked car and it was pushed onto 2 other cars .My front end was damaged and airbags deployed. My seatbelt jerked me and was damages . There have been recalls on this vehicle for fuel pump problem which causes crashes. There's been a recall in this vehicle for the seatbelt explodes. There's also a problem with the headlight doesn't work and it's full of water. The seals are bad in the headlight has not been recalled yet. I want Genesis to take responsibility for this accident and compensate me. I'm taking my car into the dealership today Las Vegas with Las Vegas Genesis to discuss this issue and have them take a look at this car. I don't feel comfortable with this car anymore. My insurance could be with Allstate and the car is still not fixed right . I mistakenly attached a photo of a VIN number for a different vehicle. Please omit photo 5832. That's my Volvo. There's nothing to do with this case. Sorry I didn't know how to remove it.

Battery begins discharge without warning while driving the vehicle. System begins complete shutdown without warning. Experiencing clunking and or jerking while driving no matter if speed acceleration/deceleration. Infotainment system goes out of function without notice - radio, sound, navigation, and safety cameras included. I feel unsafe during driving this vehicle as it does not give any warning when these issues occur. Once in traffic I had to slam on breaks after the truck just shot off after lightly pressing the gas to move forward. Whenever the vehicle is taken in for inspection, no issues are found. I reported the clunking before, the dealer claimed it was a faulty fuel pump. This is a brand-new vehicle and none of these issues should be happening.

The car is not accelerating or needs hard acceleration to move. It is also losing power intermittently. The car can not accelerate to pass a vehicle. The transmission is behaving erraticly. Causing severe back pain accelerating the car in normal city driving. The RPMs exceed 4000 reaching a speed of 45 miles an hour making the car engine very noisy.

There are cracks on the driver side headlamp due to design flaw. My light went completely off causing the front headlamp to turn off and disable certain things that are crucial forndriving. the dealer will not replace the headlamp saying it is external factors. The contact owns a 2021 Genesis GV80. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the service brakes independently engaged. The contact stated that the brakes independently engaged a total of four times while the contact was driving on a major highway. The contact’s son was a passenger in the vehicle. The contact stated that he was almost rear-ended several times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer four to five times previously regarding the proximity sensors. The contact stated that the proximity sensors had been illuminated several times in the past. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.

Left LED Headlamps & intergral camera sensor assembly has failed due to moisture penetration behind the lenses. In addition to no left headlamps or left front turn signal, we have lost the emergency braking, forward collision warning, the lane departure warning and the lane keeping assistance features. Service advisor has advised on 01/08/24 that this is a common problem & parts are not readily available.

THE 2021 GENESIS GV80 REAR BUMPER COVER VIBRATES WHILE DRIVING AS IF IT WANTS TO BLOW OFF. THIS PART OF THE BUMPER INCLUDES THE TAG AREA AND THE LOWER BUMPER COVER. WHILE DRIVING, THE TAG ALSO VIBRATES. IT SEEMS TO APPEAR THAT THERE IS NOTHING SUPPORTING THIS BUMPER. THIS VEHICLE COSTS TOO MUCH FOR IT TO HAVE THIS TYPE OF DEFECT. SAFETY IS PUT AT RISK BECAUSE THE BUMPER COVER COULD POSSIBLY BLOW OFF WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHER SPEED. I HAVEN'T TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER YET BUT I WILL HAVE IT INSPECTED BY THE DEALER. THIS FIRST APPEARED TO BE NOTICED ON FRIDAY, NOV. 17, 2023 WHEN DRIVING HOME FROM OUT OF TOWN. MY HUSBAND TRAILED ME AND NOTICED THE VIBRATION OF THE BUMPER COVER. HE TOLD ME TO PULL OVER AND EXPLAINED TO ME WHAT WAS HAPPENING TO THE BUMPER COVER WHILE I WAS DRIVING. HE EXPLAINED THAT THE REAR BUMPER COVER AND TAG AREA WAS VIBRATING WHILE I WAS DRIVING IT. THERE WERE NO WARNING LAMPS OR MESSAGES WHILE DRIVING. THIS CAR IS EXPENSIVE AND SHOULD BE BETTER MADE THAN IT IS. I WILL CONTACT GENESIS CORPORATE AND SHARE THIS SAME INFO WITH THEM.

I bought my 2021 GV80 used with 15,500 miles. After driving not even 100 miles, we experienced the vehicle stalling and having no power. Giving it gas, the RPM's would not rise and the engine then shut off. The engine light briefly turned on but did not stay on. After the car shut down and turned back on, we kept driving. We took the vehicle immediately to the dealer where they proceeded to tell us there is nothing wrong because the diagnostics came back fine. But now this exact same thing has happened on 7 different occasions after driving a little over 1,000 miles. This has happened on the freeway, on busy intersections and feel unsafe to drive. On one occasion, we were almost hit from behind because we stalled making a left at a buy intersection. I took it back to a Genesis dealer and one week in their service, we were told they can't duplicate it and we should pick it up. Again, I do not feel safe driving this vehicle. There are no recalls but many complaints about this same problem and no recourse to fix this.

The brakes failed at about 25mph. My car collided into the car in front of me. After several attempts to pump the brakes they never re-engaged to stop the vehicle.

The contact's mother owned a 2021 Genesis GV80. The contact stated that while her mother was driving into a parking space at an undisclosed speed, the brake pedal was depressed but the vehicle experienced unintended acceleration. The vehicle drove over a field and into oncoming traffic before crashing into another vehicle. No warning light was illuminated. Only the front driver's side air bag was deployed. A police report was filed. The contact's mother later received medical attention for injuries sustained to her ribs, left shoulder, and neck, as well as hearing loss in the left ear. The vehicle was towed to a body shop; however, it was not yet deemed totaled by the insurance company. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 17,500.

The infotainment system on my GV80 works for 5 minutes and shuts down. The lane change warning light and front collision warning goes on and off while driving. the back-up camera and warning stopped working. When you park the vehicle, it takes at least it takes 10 minutes to completely shut down

The car would slam in park of you went over 30 all lights and windshield wipers would move and flash would not accelerate after slammed in park said door was open when wasn’t. There diagnostics was that some how liquid came from cup holder and got wiring harness wet please see whoops there where a few drops in there and I spoke with tech and they said there is nothing protecting the femal end from liquid getting on it as it is under the cup holder

There is a very bright section of chrome stripping on the dashboard, just below the control panel, that reflects light which looks like a lightening bolt directly across the windshield in the drivers viewing area. This happens when both sunlight and street lamps shine on the dashboard. It is very distracting and dangerous. Quite bright here in FL. It hasn't caused an accident "yet". The incidents are continuous, not a specific date.

WHILE DRIVING A LOW PRESSURE WARNING POPPED UP ON THE DASH. WHEN I GOT OUT I NOTICED THE REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE WAS LOW. I DID A VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE TIRE AND I NOTICED NO DAMAGE. WHILE ADDING AIR I NOTICED THE PRESSURE WOULD NOT GO OVER 33PSI AND I COULD HEAR AIR ESCAPING THE TIRE. THERE WAS A BULGE AT THE BEAD OF THE TIRE. THE TIRE WAS COMING OFF THE RIM. WHILE DRIVING THE DAY PRIOR I NOTICED THE VEHICLE WAS UNSTABLE. I BROUGHT THIS VEHICLE IN COUPLE OF TIMES FOR BALANCING ISSUES.

VEHICLE OCCASIONALLY BECAME UNSTABLE AND UNPREDICTABLE WHENEVER IT COMES IN CONTACT WITH OBJECTS/ BUMPS IN THE ROAD. RATTLING FROM LEFT SIDE SUSPENSION UPON RESTARTING DURING IDLE AND GO. ALSO HAVE A BALANCING ISSUE AT HIGHWAY SPEED THAT CAN BE FELT THROUGHOUT THE VEHICLE.
