How to read a Genesis GV60 VIN — every digit explained

Every Genesis GV60 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this GV60.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your GV60 VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
  • Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

2023 GV60

The contact owns a 2023 Genesis GV60. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, it was noticed that the battery percentage was excessively draining. The charger port warning light was illuminated. The contact attempted to depress the brake pedal however, the vehicle failed to decrease in speed; the vehicle suddenly became difficult to maneuver. The vehicle was veered onto the sidewalk and the front driver's side of the vehicle crashed into a street lighting junction box. There was cosmetic damage however, the air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed. The contact sustained several injuries including emotional distress, back pain, and neck pain; the contact was taken to a local hospital in an ambulance to seek medical attention. No other injured individuals were reported. The doctor diagnosed the contact with a mild concussion and prescribed medicine for nausea and headaches. The vehicle was not drivable and was towed to a local Towing Service Center for a diagnosis. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 24,300.

2025 GV60

The 12 volt battery does not recharge resulting in the car going dead. All instruments are blank. The car has been in the dealer's service department since April 28 and they not been able to fix the problem.

2025 GV60

The 12 volt battery on the EV car has gone dead twice since I took delivery on the new car in January 2025. When that happens the car is completely dead and must be manually accessed to open the hood and jump start the car. The first time the car would function once jump started. The second time the car would not stay "running" and the battery had to be recharged for the car to function. This problem seems to be the same as the issue that prompted the recall of this car and others in the fall of 2024. It appears that the problem was not corrected in new cars produced.

2024 GV60

On December 1, 2025 the car gave a series of messages on the screen indicating that there was an issue with the electrical system. I was within a mile of home and so drove home because it was operating normally at first. Driving home the car went into a limp mode and could only go very slowly 15-20 mph probably). The car was towed from my house on 12/1/2025. The issue turned out to be a bad Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU). The car was fixed on 12/16/2025. I just wanted to make sure this failure was counted .

2024 GV60

On March 1, 2026, while driving at normal roadway speed on a double yellow-lined road, my 2024 Genesis GV60 Advance displayed a "Check Electric Vehicle System" warning. With less than one minute of the warning appearing, the vehicle lost propulsion and rolled to a stop. I was able to steer into a parking lot, but I was stranded miles from home. There was minimal advance warning before complete loss of drive power. The vehicle could not be driven and required towing. The vehicle previously had the ICCU recall campaign marked as complete on January 3, 2025. Despite that prior recall remedy, the vehicle experienced sudden loss of propulsion. The vehicle is currently at the dealership for diagnosis and repair. The dealership has indicated extended diagnostic time and that related parts are on backorder. I am filing this compliant because sudden propulsion loss with little warning presents a significant safety risk to both occupants and surrounding traffic.

2024 GV60

Electrical failure. Car was stuck in neutral on a hill with houses behind. Could not put in park, apply hazard light, or apply emergency brake. Could not exit the car safely due the fact if you took your foot of the brake the car would roll backward down hill uncontrolled. Steering was very stiff or locked so is was impossible to direct car to safe spot at the bottom of the hill. Have video documentation.

2024 GV60

Last year there was a recall associated with this vehicle due to the ICCU (Integrated Charging Control Unit). Two visits to the dealership were required to resolve the issue (November and December 2024). My vehicle was running properly until 11/17/25 PM when while freeway driving home I experienced a power failure that prompted me to immediately pull over to check the power circuit. My vehicle lost power, going from 65 mph to the 40's, and later the 20's. I was fortunately able to exit the freeway without incident and limped into a nearby dealership after hours where I left my car for repair. I suspect this may be another issue with the ICCU. I am still waiting on the dealership's diagnostics. I am reporting this incident, as based on internet forums, this issue remains a safety problem for the Genesis GV60. I was very fortunate not to have cars immediately behind me when the power failure occurred. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? - ELECTRICAL How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? - I WAS AT RISK FOR A REAR END COLLISION ON THE FREEWAY DUE TO THE ABRUPT LOSS OF POWER Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? - DEALERSHIP IS STILL WORKING ON CAR Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? - NO Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? - NO PRIOR WARNING SIGNS

2024 GV60

Frequently, when starting my car, the instrument cluster display is blank. It can take many minutes for it to turn on. This is unsafe as I can’t see speed and other potential alerts.

2024 GV60

The contact owns a 2024 Genesis GV60. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, the instrument panel was intermittently darkened, and the contact had to wait several minutes for the instrument panel to return to normal operation. There was no warning light illuminated; however, an unknown error message was intermittently displayed on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken back to the residence. A dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 9,000.

2024 GV60

The main cluster display periodically remains black, off or dark. When this happens you are unable to see your speed, lane departure, battery percentage and other vehicle stats. Car has been to the dealer twice for software updates but they have not fixed the problem. Genesis Owner forums state that others within the US have similar problems.

Power Train 19% 14 Read
2024 GV60

During a routine left hand turn at low speed (~10-15MPH), the vehicle engaged emergency braking. The dashboard indicated emergency braking was enabled. There were no objects in the vehicle's path. Acceleration was not possible during the event. Because the braking was unexpected and unintentional, the vehicle behind nearly collided with me.

2023 GV60

This complaint is in regards to Safety Recall 272 Component Failure and Vehicle Disabling / SOS System Failure On [XXX], at approximately [XXX] PM, I was driving my Genesis vehicle during rush hour when I heard a loud popping sound. Immediately following the sound, the dashboard displayed a critical warning light stating: "Electrical Charging System Fault — Check Electrical System." Because I was actively driving in heavy rush-hour traffic, this sudden loss of charging system functionality posed an immediate safety hazard. I pressed the in-vehicle "SOS" button to contact Genesis emergency services. The operator, who identified himself as "Eddie," refused to dispatch a tow truck to assist me. Instead, he offered to read a phone number aloud for me to write down. I explained that I was actively operating a malfunctioning vehicle in heavy traffic and could not safely write down information, but he still refused to call for emergency towing. I managed to safely limp the vehicle back to my residence and subsequently arranged for the local dealership, Genesis of Las Vegas, to tow the vehicle. On Friday, June 5, 2026, the dealership confirmed that the vehicle had suffered a failure of the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU), which also destroyed the 12V battery. They informed me that this failure was directly tied to NHTSA Safety Recall 272 (Integrated Charging Control Unit). While the dealership performed the ICCU remedy, they are currently refusing to release my vehicle unless I pay $500.00 for the replacement of the 12V battery. Because the 12V battery was directly damaged as a consequential result of the recalled ICCU defect, it should be covered under the safety recall remedy and vehicle warranty. As of this reporting, the dealer is holding my vehicle hostage over this fee, and Genesis Motor America has failed to resolve the issue despite a formal complaint being filed with them. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

2023 GV60

The ICCU failed again. This is the second failure and this failure occurred after the previous recalls were applied.

2023 GV60

While driving car, I heard a "pop" sound coming from the back seat, my ICCU had failed and then there was a sudden loss vehicle power and the car went into a limp mode. The car only had 5,650 miles on it. This is a serious safety hazard. The car was towed to the dealership and a new ICCU was installed. The replacement part was the same model number that had failed. I was advised by the service adviser that I could possibly experience another ICCU failure in the future.

2023 GV60

Water pump failure in vehicle less than two years of age. Dealer stated car was not safe to drive. Instrument cluster had a warning light, the app had details of the failures, and the display in the vehicle had a pop up stating the car needed to be serviced TODAY!

2023 GV60

I leased a 2023 Genesis GV60, which was misrepresented as new but had multiple safety recalls, including ICCU battery failure, AWD/powertrain malfunction, and seatbelt defects. From the start, the seatbelts didn’t secure properly, and the car failed NY state inspection, causing me to lose a job that required a safe vehicle. Despite six visits to different service centers in 3 months, no actual repairs were completed. Mechanics admitted they didn’t understand the battery defect. The recalls later disappeared from the system without resolution. This is highly unsafe and deceptive. Genesis refused accountability, claiming they don’t control dealership practices—yet they allowed a dealer to fraudulently lease a car with open recalls. They also filed a false insurance claim under my name, inflating my premium and causing me over $33,000 in damages. I visited five other luxury dealers and confirmed that other brands do not allow demo or recall vehicles to be sold this way. Genesis’ refusal to fix or buy back the car and their attempt to cover up recall issues reveals a systemic failure in recall enforcement and corporate responsibility. I urge NHTSA to investigate.

2023 GV60

I leased a Genesis GV60 in July 2023. The car was under a stop sale order and had to be repaired before it was leased to me because of a known issue with the rear axle. The dealership performed the fix to the vehicle and then proceeded to lease me the vehicle. In January 2025 while driving approximately 40 MPH on a paved flat road, I experienced a sudden thud and loss of power. When I applied pressure to the accelerator a loud angry noise came from the back of the vehicle. Smoke and a burning smell came from the back of the vehicle. There were electrical issues with the car being initial unresponsive to attempts to put the car in park, unlock doors and turn off the vehicle. We left the vehicle on the side of the road. We were in a remote location in a very cold climate with no cell phone signal at dusk. We flagged down a passing-by driver for transport to a safe location where we could call Genesis Emergency Roadside assistance. The car was towed to an authorized Genesis dealership and the rear axle was replaced at no cost to me. Repair staff at the dealership confirmed that based on their inspection there was no indication that the car had experienced any type of impact / injury that could explain the fractured rear axle. In March 2025, again I was driving on a paved flat road going approximately 30 MPH. As I was approaching a stop sign, I again experienced what felt like a sudden thud, and heard a high pitched whine. When I tried to accelerate off the stop sign and cross traffic I again experienced a lack of power with an angry noise and the smell of smoke. The car was towed to the original dealership where the vehicle was purchased and it was confirmed that the rear axle had broken again just two months after having been replaced. I am unwilling to drive the vehicle again our of concern for my safety and that of others.

2023 GV60

On 3/5/2025 I was driving my car and accelerating to 45 miles per hour when the Stop vehicle and check power supply warning on my car showed on the dash followed by a loud and starting audible tone. I pulled over to check the car and it still worked well. I then went home and tried to charge the vehicle off of our level 2 charger and the vehicle would not start to charge. I brought the car to the dealer the next day after charging the 12 volt battery overnight. I charged the 12 volt battery because the car was no longer charging it as the charging system was not working. The dealer then diagnosed that the ICCU and main fuse were broken and needed replacement. These were the problem parts that previous NHTSA recalls were issued and completed on this vehicle to address this failure. My car still failed with around 6,750 miles driven. I want to let the NHTSA know that the failures of this critical part are still happening despite the manufacturer's recalls being completed in a timely manner.

The contact owns a 2023 Genesis GV60. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the front driver’s and passenger's side seat belts failed to lock securely. There were no warning lights illuminated. The dealer was contacted to schedule an appointment. The contact then received a recall letter for an unknown recall repair for the seat belts and the all-wheel drive power train. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The contact then started to hear an abnormal sound coming from the vehicle. The dealer was contacted and scheduled a second appointment. The dealer repaired the driver's side seat belt; however, the failure persisted with the front passenger's seat belt, and the all-wheel drive. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100.

Related Recall: 24-01-023G DTC P1A9096 CHECK FOR ICCU & FUSE REPLACEMENT & ICCU SOFTWARE UPDATE (RECALL 021G) On August 8, 2025 I was vacationing and attempted to charge the vehicle at a hotel's level 2 destination charger (32 amp) but the vehicle refused to charge. I then drove 20 minutes away to DC Fast Charge and it worked, and tried level 2 charging again, it still did not work. I ruled out that the level 2 charging station was the problem due to seeing someone else successfully charging from that station. When I returned home, I found that my home charger also stopped charging at 32 amps (though slower 16 amps still worked). On December 14, 2025 I was driving on the highway when I heard a loud pop noise and the vehicle immediately lost propulsion, resulting in a dangerous situation where the car needed to limp at low speeds to the side of the road. There, the car fully lost all mobility and needed to be towed to a Genesis dealership. They diagnosed the problem as a faulty ICCU, and replaced it as well as installed new software to prevent this situation from reoccurring. In May 29, 2026 the vehicle once again no longer charges at 32 amps at home. The charging would initiate and last a few minutes before fully disengaging and the car reports "Charger Not Connected". Since this is a repeat of the same ICCU failure (above), and I DO NOT wish to lose vehicle propulsion on the highway like before, I have stopped driving the vehicle until it can be diagnosed and fixed by Genesis dealership. I am awaiting for the local Genesis dealership's next availability in a week. I no longer can safely drive my vehicle until this is fixed for a second time. The issue is still unresolved as of today, June 8th 2026.

Water pump failure in vehicle less than two years of age. Dealer stated car was not safe to drive. Instrument cluster had a warning light, the app had details of the failures, and the display in the vehicle had a pop up stating the car needed to be serviced TODAY!

2023 GV60

On October 17, 2024 one of the rear axles fractured when the car was driven by a dealer employee from our home to Genesis of Kirkland (WA) to resolve another matter, necessitating towing to the dealership. It was found by the dealer service department that the rear motor was damaged also. I am not aware of the speed of the car when the incident occurred. On November 22 I was told that the axle and rear motor had been repaired. I assume the other axle was not replaced as well. Previously on September 7, 2024 the car was brought to Genesis of Everett (now Genesis of Kirkland) both rear axles were replaced after a recall indicating a manufacturing fault in the axles. There have been no warning lights, messages or other indications that the fractures were imminent. During the incident there was a loud noise and loss of propulsive power. There were no injuries reported. I have not received the vehicle back from the dealership as yet.

2023 GV60

Stopped car in a parking spot for a few minutes. Reversed and proceeded to put the car into drive. Immediately upon switching to Drive, the vehicle produced a loud pop from the rear and announced the check electrical system error. Recall Service 907G was performed on the vehicle in question 2 months prior and was reported as closed when checking by the VIN. However the ICCU and High Voltage Fuse is needing to be replaced with no ETA on the replacement part(s) as of this reports submission. Dealership advised NOT to drive the vehicle and arranged a tow. Car has been at the dealership for over a week now.

My wife and I have both experienced intermittent power loss on the vehicle — specifically after stopping and restarting, such as at traffic signals. During these incidents, the car moves extremely slowly even with the accelerator fully pressed, before eventually resuming normal acceleration. This has happened 3–4 times between us, and on one occasion, the car nearly stalled in the middle of an intersection, which was genuinely frightening. I brought the vehicle to Genesis of Charlotte in mid-January 2026 for diagnosis. After multiple checks, the service team was unable to identify any issues and advised me to take the car back. When I asked whether they had checked with Genesis for any known reports of this issue, the service manager told me, "That's not how we work — we diagnose by ourselves." I was surprised by this response, as I have since found this issue reported by other GV60 owners online (including on community forums), suggesting it may be a broader, known concern.

My Genesis EV has experienced multiple incidents where the vehicle suddenly decelerates while driving and limits its speed to approximately 20 mph, creating a significant safety hazard. The first incident occurred in September 2025, when the vehicle unexpectedly began to decelerate on its own and would not exceed ~20 mph. I brought it to the Genesis dealership, but they were unable to reproduce the issue. The second incident occurred in November 2025, with the same failure: sudden deceleration and a maximum speed of ~20 mph. I brought the vehicle back to the dealership. They have kept the car for diagnosis but again report they “cannot reproduce” the problem. The issue remains unresolved, and Genesis has denied my buyback request. This is an intermittent EV drivetrain or power-delivery failure that prevents the vehicle from accelerating normally. If this occurs in traffic, at intersections, or during merging, it could easily lead to a collision. The vehicle is currently still at the dealership because I do not feel safe driving it. Multiple attempts to have the problem repaired have not identified the cause. I am reporting this because sudden loss of acceleration and speed limitation is a major safety issue, and other drivers may experience the same failure.

The Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) on my Genesis GV60 called Highway Driving Assist (HDA) would randomly turn off without warning ever since I purchased the vehicle. I use it pretty much daily for my commute to work (but have to watch closely since it turns off often without warning) and the system would randomly turn off a least a few times a day so I would need to take over quickly. Yesterday when I was driving in the carpool HOV lane in the Los Angeles area where some sections of the freeway have lane markers that are very close to the center divider and the car decided to randomly turn off ADAS without warning which resulted in a car swipe against the center divider and damaged the front bumper as well as a broken side rearview mirror. I did a random search online and found lots of complaints from other Genesis/Hyundai/Kia owners who have similar issues am surprised why nothing has been done about it so I decided to report this. The repair would cost me almost 4 thousand dollars all because of the manufacturer defect that probably could be easily fixed with over the air update. Please investigate to prevent other drivers from getting into a crash for this defective. Thanks.

My car has malfunctioned under the following circumstances: While attempting to make an unprotected left turn at a traffic light intersection (there is no left turn only light) through active lanes of opposing traffic where there is no median lane and no protective barriers between opposite directions of traffic, my vehicle has executed emergency braking on 8 separate occasions. How it happens: I wait for the last opposing traffic car to clear out from the intersection and begin to make my left turn through the intersection. 10 feet into the intersection, where now I'm in opposing traffic lanes, the car initiates sudden and immediate emergency braking. The car is brought to a jarring complete stop and becomes immobilized, hitting the accelerator pedal does not move the car. The proximity sensors are going off, the blind spot sensors are going off, the collision warnings are going off and I am unable to move the vehicle for 3 seconds. Then all the sensors and warnings clear and the accelerator pedal starts to work again. Meanwhile, there is no car in sight. By the time I started making the left turn, the closest vehicle was about 30 feet behind me going the opposite direction in opposing traffic lanes. It appears my car's sensors are picking up the car that is behind me and thinks it is coming towards me rather than away from me while I have my turn signal indicator on. The car is trying to prevent a collision that it thinks will happen but in reality that car is going in the opposite direction and is well behind me. This has happened 3 times. Other times in the same exact type of turn, the car will initiate emergency braking that brings me to a 5 mph crawl and disables the accelerator pedal. So it brings me to a crawl and I lose the ability to accelerate while in the middle of an active intersection. This has happened 5 times. Inspected by dealership and corporate engineer 10 times. Several near accidents that would have hospitalized us. We have dashcam footage.

2023 Genesis GV60 has a recurring pre-active seat belt system malfunction. The seat belt pre-tensioner activates without cause, tightening the seat belt unexpectedly while driving. This defect has occurred multiple times and has been documented across three separate dealer repair visits. Visit 1 (05/30/2025, 7,122 mi): Galpin Genesis Van Nuys - DTC B1A4718 stored, seat belt pre-tensioner malfunction diagnosed. Visit 3 (06/13/2025, 7,220 mi): Genesis of West Covina - Defect persisted, same DTC confirmed a third time. The defect poses a serious safety risk as unexpected seat belt tightening while driving can startle the driver and cause loss of vehicle control. Genesis has been unable to permanently repair this defect despite three attempts. This vehicle is also subject to related NHTSA recalls 23V-557 and 23V-094 for seat belt issues on GV60 models.

Chrome trim piece above windshield detached and flew off when traveling at highway speed on freeway.

2024 GV60

The approximately 52-inch-long chrome trim piece that runs the length of the top of the windshield came off while driving. Because this trim piece is at the top of the windshield, and out of the view of the driver, I am uncertain exactly when it came off, but I believe it came off while at freeway speed, and that is why I do not have, or know, the location of the missing trim. A trim piece of this size (approximately 52 inches) coming off my vehicle at freeway speed would have passed over the top of my vehicle and posed a safety hazard to a motorist or motorbike rider behind me. The manufacturer’s authorized dealer confirmed the missing piece and replaced it under warranty. I heard oddly pronounced wind noises before I noticed the trim piece was missing, and I believe, in retrospect, the noise may have been created by the loose trim piece prior to completing dislodging from the vehicle.

2023 GV60

The chrome trim strip above the windshield flew off while driving. This poses a safety hazard for anyone driving behind a GV60 and unfortunately this issue seems to be very widespread (examples: [XXX] ). Genesis refused to fix the issue for me despite being under warranty, so I suspect they are doing the same for other owners despite the safety risk. Can a Genesis GV60 tow? Towing & payload

As an SUV, the Genesis GV60 is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package.

What sets your GV60's tow & payload rating:

  • Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
  • Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
  • Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
  • Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.
