How to read a Genesis GV80 VIN — every digit explained

Every Genesis GV80 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this GV80.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your GV80 VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
  • Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

UNINTENDED ACCELERATION!! 2022 GENESIS GV80 2.5T Prestige model. 60 miles after I had the fuel pump replaced due to a recall on the fuel pump, car was totaled. It was complete luck that I or others WERE NOT KILLED. The vehicle was sitting still with engine running and all of a sudden just accelerated up to about 40+ mph. I had to steer into parked car to stop my vehicle. The gear shift would not go into neutral or reverse. entire experience took 6-8 seconds. Air bag saved me. The car had just come from the Genesis service center 60 miles prior to incident. Was in excellent condition with only 6190 on it. VERY SCARY..If I had been on the highway or going through an intersection people would have been killed, as car kept gaining speed. My insurance company has sent out an independent investigator to read data from the car-have not heard back yet. Police report was filed. NO warning light or any thing unusual prior to incident

2021 GV80

The contact owned a 2021 Genesis GV80. The contact stated that the instrument cluster was inoperable. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the instrument cluster had failed and needed to be replaced at the owner's expense. The contact declined to pay for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving 70 MPH at night, the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road. The contact stated that upon opening the front driver's side door, the contact noticed that there was smoke coming from under the vehicle. The contact walked to the front of the vehicle and noticed flames coming from under the hood, by the windshield connecting point. The fire was extinguished by the fire department, but there was no report filed. The police arrived at the scene but failed to file or to provide a police report to the contact. There was no reported injury. The contact stated that the vehicle burned to the ground. The dealer was contacted but no assistance was provided. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard, where it was deemed a total loss by the manufacturer. The contact stated that the manufacturer had previously advised that the vehicle would be towed to a third laboratory for analysis; however, the manufacturer had failed to do so and had sent field technicians, who took pictures of the burned vehicle instead. The manufacturer then informed the contact that no assistance would be provided because the manufacturer was not liable for the failure, per the technician's report. The contact inquired a copy of the report and was informed that the copy could not be provided because it was private data. Additionally, the manufacturer advised the contact that he would need to retain the vehicle to pursue the matter. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V630000(Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 95,000.

Digital instrument cluster continually turns off while operating. Yes its available for inspection When the instrument cluster of out, there is no speedometer, no turn signals, no safety features. On one occasion when the screen came back on it indicated that a crash was imminent when there was none. I believe this put our safety and others at risk as critical functions of the vehicle are not available when the screen in blank. Yes, the dealer has confirmed the issue on 3 separate occasions and attempted to fix it. It has been inspected by the manufacturer on 4 occasions. Vehicle timeline: •We took delivery of the car on [XXX] •On [XXX] the instrument cluster rebooted TWICE because of what we thought was CarPlay. •From 8/6/2024 to 8/12/2024 the dealer had the car and said it was my phone causing the issues and there was nothing wrong with the car. •On [XXX] we got videos of the entire screen AND instrument cluster going out and brought it in immediately for service •From 8/30/2024 to 9/6/2024 they had my car in service, they confirmed the ENTIRE instrument cluster was having issues and traced it to a bad connector and “fixed” it. •On [XXX] the screen AND entire instrument cluster started going out again. •From 9/10/2024 to 9/13/2024 they had my car in service, they once again confirmed the issue and traced it back to a pin problem. •On [XXX] the screen started going out again. We called Cherry Hill as Freehold cant seem to get the problem solved and could only get an appointment on 10/10/2024 •Between 9/27/2024 and 10/10/2024 we got DOZENS of videos of the ENTIRE instrument cluster going blank. On one of these occasions, when the screen came back on the safety features were freaking out that a crash was imminent when there was not. •From 10/10/2024 to 10/25/2024 they had my car in service where the once again confirmed the ENTIRE instrument cluster was going out and traced it to a set of pins and connectors in the car. 2024 GV80

My 2024 GV80 with approximately 15k miles started completely powering off while driving multiple times and the vehicle started itself while in my enclosed garage space with no one in the vehicle, no button/brake pressed, not key fob pressed. I turned this into the dealership for manufacturer repair on 9/13/25 and as of today, 2/5/26, I still do not have my car back. The dealership explains there is an intermittent parasitic draw that they have been unable to identify. The battery drain, they claim, resulted in the car stopping by itself and starting by itself. The company has refused buyback under Lemon Law (not covering CPO), letters to the CEO have gone unanswered, multiple claims with Genesis corporate have resulted in no help and the local dealership is horrendous- no response, having the vehicle 5 months, no timeline.

2024 GV80

Total battery system failure to where vehicle would not start/restart, or if started via jumping, would stall out shortly thereafter. Battery problem to point to where jump starting is difficult due to shorted battery lowering availalble power to start/restart engine. This could have caused unexpected removal of power from the vehcile during traveling or in unsafe areas. This appears to be a very common problem with this vehicle as seen on various online forums and lack of part (battery) availability.

2024 GV80

After 3 weeks of sitting idle, the car door had trouble to open. We changed the key batteries but didn’t fix the issue. The next day, car door opened without issue and the car was fine to drive. The 3rd day, the car went dead with no response to the key. The 4th day it came back to live again. However, the car went completely stalled during driving. The engine stopped and no lights or electricity can be turned on. After 15 seconds, the car restarted by itself. I sent the car to dealership but they cannot find any issue.

2024 GV80

Defective software issue that has not been corrected since owner took possession of vehicle. Customer/Client is told to deal with the Engineering dept. at Genesis Corporate and it is out of the hands of the dealer. The software effects a lot of moving parts and safety features within vehicle, I feel the vehicle cannot be trusted. No one follows up from dealer to National Customer Service for the brand. They need accountability immediately.

2023 GV80

On April 20th, 2026 I called Genesis of Carmel (Address: [XXX] Phone: [XXX] ) to get a oil change. On the same day I called them I also explained that various warning lights started to appear in the dash (check high beam assist system, check driver attention system, check speed limit system). The next day on the 21st when I wen to t take the car in for service the car would not start. I had to have the car towed to the Genesis dealer listed above. I received no calls from the dealership for 2 weeks. When trying to call their phone it is very hard to get through and strangely they hang up on you once you been transferred to the service department. On May 10th I received a call back from the Genesis delership and they stated that they had out a battery in my car but that the battery is draining and they don't know why. I asked them in they provide loaners sionce ai have beeen without a car for sevral days. they expolained that they don't have any but I could call Genesis (844-340-9741) and perhaps they could help me faster. i asked why they couldn't call for me and they stated that I may have better success. I called Genesis at that phone number 844-340-9641 and again explained all of the above information. I was given a case number and provided the same day as requested the information that they are asking for. This is a copy of the email (attached) I received after that call. On Friday, April 11, 2026 I received an alert on my vehicle that there was a possible issue with the driver's side headlamps. After checking my headlamps I discovered that the driver's side headlamps were not on. It was night time when this happened and I was very concerned for my safety and the safety of others while driving without proper lighting. The issue has been confirmed by a Genesis Service representative stating that this is a very common issue with this particular vehicle. It was relayed that moisture gets in the light assembly and shorts out the ILCU, which kills light functions. I have not had the vehicle inspected by the manufacturer, police or insurance representative. I feel that this issue, being known to be a common occurrence, should be a recall item and I am requesting a goodwill repair. I purchased this vehicle used and have had it for nine months. It was out of warranty when I purchased it so I purchased an extended warranty but unfortunately for me it does not include lighting. I am an elderly woman on a fixed income and cannot afford an expensive repair like this (approximately $2,500). I've always wanted a GV80 and was so excited when I purchased it. I am hopeful that Genesis will stand behind their product and put this item as a recall or in the very least grant a goodwill repair.

In March 2026, I was driving on the freeway when the car shut itself off and put itself into neutral and accessory modes. There was no warning. This put the safety of myself and other drivers on the road at serious risk because I was unable to accelerate or adequately control my vehicle without warning. The dealer says the car "is operating as designed."

1. ·On [XXX] I was driving on the freeway at highway speeds when the car shut itself down and went into neutral and accessory mode. No warning lights came on. Nothing happened if I hit the gas or the brake or tried to change the gear. With the car being shut down, I could have been hit by other cars traveling at high rates of speed or caused an accident due to my car shutting itself off. Yes, the problem has been confirmed by a dealer. They said it needed an entirely new transmission. No, the car has not be inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance agents, or others. 2. ·On [XXX], I was again driving on the freeway at freeway speeds when the car shut itself off and went into neutral and accessory mode. Purchased my 2024 GV80 3.5t in June of 2024 and have been experiencing intermittent issues with the acceleration. Car hesitates when accelerating and can causing accidents while at an intersection making a turn. I have bought the car into the dealership three times, and they are unable to reproduce. Unfortunately, after reading the complaints and symptoms of the fuel pump recall for the 2021-2023 this issue seems identical. I have reach out to Genesis Corporate and they are no help and don't return calls or emails for days.

Twice had to turn car on and off, once it was able to start back up on its own after pressing accelerator. No warning lamps or system failure notification, just some information on dash going away for a bit.

I was driving my 2022 Genesis GV80 on Sunday April 5th, 2026 when the vehicle started to overheat. This is the second incident that happened due to the vehicle overheating. The first time reported was in December 2025 at a cost of $3400 out of pocket. Now I see this recall for a potential fire that can be caused by the manufacturer defect. This is very concerning, since the vehicle has been serviced since I purchased the Genesis as a gift to myself in November 2021. This does not sit well with me, with Genesis being a "Luxury" brand. I believe that I should have my vehicle repurchased by Genesis due to these mechanical manufacturer defects.

Since the coasting feature on the Genesis GV80 and similar models is inoperative, it could mean that Genesis misrepresented the vehicle’s fuel efficiency and emissions performance. The coasting function is designed to disengage the engine from the drivetrain to improve fuel economy, and because it doesn’t work as advertised, real-world MPG may be lower than stated. This could mislead consumers who purchased the vehicle expecting better efficiency. Additionally, coasting reduces engine load and fuel consumption, meaning that with it disabled, carbon emissions could be higher than what was tested or certified. Since official EPA fuel economy ratings were calculated with the assumption that coasting is active, but in practice, the feature never engages, this could be considered a form of emissions cheating or consumer fraud. Such discrepancies raise regulatory concerns and provide grounds for legal action, including a class-action lawsuit, if buyers were misled into purchasing a vehicle under false claims.

Subject: Complaint Regarding Genesis GV80 Coasting Feature Malfunction in Eco Mode To Whom It May Concern, This complaint is regarding a defect in the Genesis GV80’s Eco Mode, specifically the failure of the vehicle to coast as advertised. Genesis promotes the coasting feature as a key function of Eco Mode to improve fuel efficiency, yet this feature does not engage at all during real-world driving. Multiple owners have reported this issue to Genesis dealerships during service visits, yet no fix has been provided. Despite being aware of the problem, Genesis has not issued any software updates, recalls, or technical service bulletins to address the malfunction. This misleading advertising impacts vehicle performance and fuel economy, creating frustration among customers who purchased the vehicle based on these claims. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is urged to investigate this matter and hold Genesis accountable for failing to deliver on its advertised vehicle functionality. 1. When starting from a stop the vehicle sometimes applies brakes with a collision warning, with no other vehicles in front or next to the car. This will repeat several times before the issue goes away. This has happened 4 times in the last 10 days.   2. When using adaptive cruise control the vehicle will not recognize vehicles ahead, even with the maximum following distance selected. This is almost always the case.

While driving through a parking lot on [XXX], leaves blew in front of car and it automatically came to an abrupt stop. While driving on [XXX] on [XXX] at approximately 70 MPH, without any encroaching vehicles and with no road obstructions, the automatic emergency braking temporarily engaged on 2 occasions, indicator on dash indicated that it occurred, and I felt the wheels lock up for a short time. Fortunately, there was nobody very close behind me and I was able to maintain control of the car. In neither of these instances, did I physically apply the brake. I continued to drive the vehicle home at a decreased speed and have parked it in my garage. The vehicle mileage is 27043 and has no damage. An apparent dangerous malfunction with the vehicle's ADAS system (possible computer, camera or sensor.) I have spoken with the dealer and they are arranging to pick the vehicle up from my house. Unrelated, I had the vehicle oil changed at this same dealer (Genesis of Cherry Hill) at 6,000 miles and had to have it towed back to them the next day because they overfilled the oil, the CEL illuminated and it developed a misfire. Likely caused internal engine damage and flooded the VVT solenoids and likely aerated the oil, reducing its lubricating capability. While at a stop sign on a hill the brakes failed. Brake pedal released and sunk to the floor while pressed at a stop sign. I lost control of the car and had to swerve to the opposite side of the road to avoid collision. I then attempted to engage the emergency brake but that failed as well. The car rolled through a red light after which I put the car in park in an effort to stop the vehicle before running the next red light. The car came to a jerking stop after I put it in park. At the time of brake failure, warning alerts activated on the dashboard. “Stop vehicle and check brake system.” After I was finally able to stop the car I called roadside assistance and had the car towed to the dealership for assessment and repairs.

The Adaptive Cruise Control will slow the car down or try to bring it to a stop from speed on a highway for no reason, with no other vehicle in close proximity. Sometimes it occurs on a curve when the car seems to react to a guard rail or snow bank. Very often it is on a long straight stretch of road with no one in sight. Car just aggressively decelerates. The only action is to press the accelerator or shut the cruise control off in order to overcome the problem. Clearly this puts vehicle occupants at risk because the car creates a risky driving situation on highways. Have brought it to a dealer where the service manager acknowledged that this is an issue with this vehicle that others have complained about, but Genesis has not addressed. Message boards and Genesis on-line forums are filled with similar complaints. There were no warning lamps or other indicators for the problem.

Forward collision warning and active assist are practically inoperable. The vehicle doesn't detect the car in front of it and doesn't show it on display. The operation doesn't match the described function in the owner's manual. After trying to work with Genesis Corporate office and dealer, I could replicate the problem during the test drive that was conducted after dealer performed extensive diagnostics together with Genesis tech support. System didn't return any fault codes. Dealer documented the issue in the service record. During the test drive, the WARNING system finally activated when collision would have been imminent only prevented from the accident by the technician driving by slamming on the brakes. The emergency braking system didn't activate at all. I drove various loaner cars being Genesis 2023 models that all exhibited the same behavior. According to the manual the system should be active at the speeds 6 miles per hour or above. I can get very close to the car in front of me and nothing would happen. It only affects normal driving. Adaptive cruise control works fine and sees the vehicle in front of me with no issues

Water enters headlamp assembly causing a he assembly to fail. Failed assembly ruins control module. Ruined control module disables multiple safety features (7 errors code show upon failure). Root cause is a faulty seal from original manufacturing. Manufacturer has corrected the faulty seal but did not issue safety recall leaving owners with defective and unsafe equipment as well as hefty repair bills.

Drivers side headlights started collecting condensation, after 2 weeks the daytime running lights stopped working. When driving thru rain the headlights stopped working and the LED warning light came on.We can’t comfortably drive in the rain or after dark without safe lighting. The local Genesis dealer inspected the issue and the manufacturer has offered to cover 1/2 the cost of replacement. The vehicle is 3 years old and while over the mileage for warranty this is an issue which should be covered 100% as it is a safety issue. The LED headlights should have a longer lifespan.

2021 GV80

Notice condensation building up in driver side headlamp, then I received LED lights failure warning ️ as i was driving. Now i driver side signal is not working some times and now i have about 7 warnings on dash from headlamp failure to collision sensor going off. I know since car is a 2021 and i'm the second owner it's out of warranty, but i speculate that this problem probably known now look at other reports and it only had 35K miles when I purchased it.

2021 GV80

I'm reporting moisture in the driver headlight. I noticed a little moisture when I purchased it in October 25(used). Of course the warranty is up and the extended warranty doesn't cover replacement of assembly. Which is very pricey over 2000. I took it to the dealership to get it looked at but at the time it was still working but flickering alot, now it's completely out. I asked was it cracked and the service guy said no, this is something that we see sometimes. I didn't have any warning lights on prior to it going completely out. Now I can't get an expectation tag because of the headlight assembly needing to be changed. This is something Genesis must look into or offer warranties that cover expensive parts like that. It's definitely a hazard when both lights aren't working properly. I'm torn between trying to get it fixed or just letting the vehicle be repossessed and start over with something with a better warranty. I current have 6 alerts on dashboard since the light is completely out.

Component: Exterior Lighting / Headlamps Vehicle: 2021 Genesis GV80 VIN: [XXX] Mileage at Failure: 77,000 Complaint: The front left headlamp on my 2021 Genesis GV80 failed completely after visible moisture and condensation accumulated inside the lamp housing for approximately one week. There was no impact, damage, or tampering. The Genesis service center inspected the vehicle and confirmed the failure was caused by moisture intrusion consistent with Genesis Technical Service Bulletin 23‑BD‑002G (“Information for Lamp Condensation”). This condition is also documented with NHTSA under XXX The failure resulted in a complete loss of headlamp function, creating a significant safety hazard while driving at night. Genesis Customer Care initially informed me that if the dealer confirmed the failure was consistent with the TSB, the repair would be covered under goodwill. After the dealer confirmed the defect, Genesis corporate declined to cover the repair due to the vehicle being out of warranty, despite the failure being caused by a known manufacturer defect affecting visibility and safety. I am filing this complaint because the defect is safety‑related, documented by the manufacturer, and resulted in the loss of primary forward lighting. The passage side headlight has moistures in it. They said run the engine for 30 minutes so it will dissolve and it didn't. And now the headlights not working and its $2,000 to get it replace.

2021 GV80

Condensation has appeared in the driver side headlight. It has caused the headlight and blinker to stop working. In addition, several warning lights have appeared on the dash indicating the following operations are no longer working.... Driver Attention Warning System, Forward Safety System, Lane Change Assist system, Lane Departure Warning System and High Beam Assist. While the driving assist systems may be optional functions, the lack of headlight and blinker are, in my opinion, safety issues. Certainly, the car would not pass a safety inspection in the state of Virginia and, as a result, I would not be able to register the vehicle. Genesis has known of the headlight condensation problem for years and has issued several TSB's, yet they continue to build cars with a known safety issue. In my opinion, a safety recall should be implemented and Genesis should be required to repair the problem at their expense.

2021 GV80

The brakes failed at about 25mph. My car collided into the car in front of me. After several attempts to pump the brakes they never re-engaged to stop the vehicle.

2024 GV80

2024 GV80

2024 GV80

While driving down the interstate the rear brakes locked up. Was not able to accelerate over 65 mph. Originally thought it was a transmission issue until I was able to pull over smelled burning rubber and saw smoke coming from the rear brakes and the rotors completely gouged. The dealership originally indicated it is a safety issue and would have to call in an engineer but then stated that they are not able to duplicate the issue so I will have to pay for the repair out-of-pocket and will return the vehicle to me. Told them I do not feel safe driving this vehicle. No warning lights. Vehicle is currently at the Genesis of Minneapolis

Can a Genesis GV80 tow? Towing & payload

As an SUV, the Genesis GV80 is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package.

What sets your GV80's tow & payload rating:

  • Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
  • Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
  • Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
  • Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.

Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
