How to read a Genesis G90 VIN — every digit explained

Every Genesis G90 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this G90.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your G90 VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
  • Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

2023 G90

on Thursday 10/24/2024 I went to use my car which was parked in my garage and although the car was unlocked none of the doors would open. The car was completely dead and I had used it just several days before. Nothing would open doors, trunk no response from the key fob. A tow truck had to be called and the truck dragged the car out of the garage and placed dolly wheels on the front and towed from the rear to a Genesis dealer. My concern this electrical problem locked the car if a child was in the rear the only way to get the child out would be to break a window and then entry through the broken window as well as exit. On 01/16/22 at approximately 2305 hours, I was driving north on PA 743. I was traveling approximately 40 MPH in a posted 55 MPH zone due to snowy weather conditions. One adult was in the front passenger seat, 2 children were in car seats in the rear driver and passenger side. The road was level and straight. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, every warning light in the dashboard illuminated at once. The LED screen was rapidly displaying messaged such as, "blind spot monitoring system malfunction, smart BDS braking system malfunction, check smart high beam, check PSB, shifter malfunction, traction control malfunction, ESC malfunction, ABS malfunction, etc...". Immediately after traction control malfunctioned, the vehicle violently fishtailed, as if on the receiving end of a PIT maneuver, and crossed over the south bound lane. It continued off of the roadway and into a ditch, stopping several feet away from a fence. At that point, nothing was functional. Restarting the vehicle multiple times did not remedy anything. The vehicle was towed to the dealership. After approximately two months, Genesis USA advised they were unable to find any issues with the vehicle and it would soon be available to be picked up. Both the dealership and a third party(hired by Genesis) inspected the vehicle . The results of the third party inspection were unavailable.

* Recall Campaign Number : [018G, 019G] I. Statement of Complaint This complaint concerns a failure in a critical safety-related component that was previously addressed under a mandatory manufacturer recall, and the subsequent refusal by the authorized dealership to provide a second no-charge repair for the same repeated failure. II. Chronology of Events * Original Recall Repair: Approximately thirteen (13) months ago, 8/30/2024 the vehicle was taken to Anaheim Hyundai to address a safety recall concerning the oil feed pipe. The prescribed remedy, a replacement of the oil feed pipe, was completed at no cost under the recall campaign. * Second Failure (Current Event): On or about 10/6/2025, while the vehicle’s engine was running, I observed smoke rising from the engine compartment. The vehicle was immediately taken to a local independent mechanic who diagnosed the issue as a burst oil feed pipe—the identical component subject to the prior recall. * Attempted Repair at Anaheim Hyundai (Denial): The vehicle was then towed back to Anaheim Hyundai. The service department acknowledged that the component failure was the same issue addressed in the previous recall. However, the dealership has now refused to perform the repair under the recall process, citing a specific 12-month policy set by Hyundai Motor America regarding the warranty on recall remedies, which has now expired. III. Request for Intervention The failure of the previously installed recall remedy (the oil feed pipe) exposes the vehicle to the original safety risk, including potential engine failure and fire hazards, and the manufacturer’s refusal to re-remedy the defect effectively negates the purpose of the mandatory recall. I request that NHTSA investigate this matter and compel Hyundai Motor America to: * Honor the original safety recall and provide a permanent, effective remedy at no charge to the consumer. * Clarify the consumer's right regarding the warranty on recall remedies, fails after install

PROBLEM: It has happened multiple times (about 20-25 times since the purchase of the vehicle in November 2022), always while having the engine running from a stop (variable stop length); when pressing the gas pedal to re-initiate the running, the car doesn't respond to the pressure on the gas pedal for 1-2 seconds and usually responds again during the uninterrupted pressing of the gas pedal. It has usually happened, more frequently than not, while turning the car left or right with normal immediate initial response but 2-3 seconds later has a similar type of unresponsiveness lasting 1-2 seconds. Has been alarming to me as in several occasions vehicles have been driving against me and being afraid of a “T-bone collision”. On [XXX] I brought the car for selective Oil & Filter change (my choice) and to address such problem but Tony Vrenna informed me that the issue had to be addressed by “GENESIS DIAGNOSTICS” and I was given the Telephone Number to call and make an appointment. George, from Rick Case Genesis (Broward County, Florida), was the person taking care of such call and he did give me an appt for [XXX] and to bring the car to SERVICE (again) and talk to Tony Vrenna that day. The car was left overnight at Rick Case and checked but George could not document the problem himself and the car was returned to me. I was not advised about any further check regarding this problem as "there are no recalls thus far". I did then report the problem once to Genesis after being invited to a survey but no eventual call back or response thus far. The problem has continued to occur in occasional instances. I have not reported the problem to the police or to insurance representatives. I have not seen any warning lamps, messages or other accompanying symptoms or signs of the problem prior, during, or after the failure. It makes sense that the fuel pump failure previously recalled in multiple Genesis 2022 and 2023 model years might presumably be the cause. Forward Collision Avoidance 10% 6 Read
2021 G90

My 2021 Genesis G90 has experienced repeated failures of the main infotainment / viewing display system, which has been replaced multiple times by authorized Genesis dealers. Despite these repairs, the defect continues to recur. On December 19, 2025, while the main display was nonfunctional, I was involved in a rear-end collision while proceeding from a stop at a traffic light. During this event, the vehicle did not provide any forward collision warning and did not engage autonomous emergency braking, despite the presence of a vehicle directly in front of me. I am concerned that failure of the main display system or its associated control modules disables, suppresses, or prevents proper operation or driver notification of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including Forward Collision Warning, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, and Autonomous Emergency Braking. Due to the display failure, no visual warnings or system status messages could be seen, and there was no indication that collision-avoidance systems were disabled or degraded. The absence of both warnings and braking intervention raises serious concerns regarding system integration, fault handling, and fail-safe design. This vehicle has undergone multiple unsuccessful repair attempts for the same defect and is currently subject to a formal warranty demand under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. This complaint is submitted to request investigation into whether recurring display failures in the 2021 Genesis G90 can impair ADAS functionality or driver awareness, creating an unreasonable safety risk.

I purchased a new 2024 Genesis g90 vehicle from Key Genesis in Jacksonville Florida. I live in Navarre Florida near Pensacola so I took the vehicle into the Pensacola dealership for service. For almost a years time I have been notifying the dealership of a serious safety issue wirh the vehicle. There is a condition where the vehicle slams on the brakes on the highway for no apparent reason. The vehicle slams on the brakes at highway speeds while straddling two lanes. A vehicle in either lane being me could easily crash into the rear of my car when it does this. It took the dealership and Genesis corporate almost 8 months to confirm the problem, even though I had videos of the event happening. They wouldn't accept my video evidence. Consequently, they finally verified the problem and have been trying to fix it for months. They have no idea why it is doing this or how to fix it. But they have deemed the vehicle to be unsafe to drive and will not give it back to me. I have asked them to replace it with a new vehicle but they have refused. I went through the Lemon Law option and all they would offer me was to repurchase it for $23,000 less than what I have into it. They offered to pay me $9,000 and to keep the car but they have no idea what's wrong or how long it will take to fix it. So that offer is meaningless. I would like some help to try to get them to replace it with a new vehicle.

Hello. We came within one foot of running over a jogger and had pedestrian avoidance activated. I read the owners manual and found disclaimer that PA does not work in dark and for other scenarios. The PDA is essentially a daytime pedestrian avoidance and does not work half the day. Indeed many other safety features such as lane keep assist do not perform as sales people disclosed. There needs to be much better disclosure (such as with medications) about limitations of new safety features. I specifically said the reason I was buying a car was to update safety, especially PDA to avoid my grandkids, bikes and joggers. I was not fully disclosed. Many might trade-in cars to update to new features to include those who can barely afford a new car. Then become trapped due to "drive off the lot" depreciation and cannot afford a car which does perform as needed. They may be better served by waiting another year or so until PDA etc would perform as they should. I am blessed and can afford to withstand the "hit." Agree that safety features are a step in the right direction and is new territory for regulation We must in my opinion have regulations for full disclosure of safety features limitations before a sale is made. We do not all read the owner's manual before purchase and do rely on truthful sales people. Safety is not a "buyer's beware" territory. The car I purchased happened to be a Genesis, but I think this is a problem across many manufacturers. I used to do forensic pathology and know fully well what traffic safety is about. Thank you for listening. I am not writing this for any personal reason as this was a near miss with no damage done. This I think is a general problem and just wanted for your agency to have increased awareness. [XXX] MD INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

Was able to get off the interstate. Turned the car off and on. Power steering light remained on. Turned car off. Waited 5 minutes. Turned car on. November 2, 2025 at 12:19 PM, I received a call from the owner, Jose, who accused me of “assault” against his employee Toni—despite the fact that I have never been physically near Toni. I’ve only been calling to follow up on the unresolved safety issues: no fluids, bad brakes (which they claimed to have repaired), and rear tires with no tread at all. When they repaired the brakes, I would have gladly purchased new tires had I been informed.

On November 3rd at 8:23 PM, I found myself stranded on the side of the highway once again—this time due to exposed tread and a large bubble on the tire. It’s deeply troubling that a vehicle was sold in such unsafe condition. This raises serious questions about the seller’s standards and accountability.

November 5, 2023 at 12:33pm third flat tire and the spare blew out into pieces after one day.

On November 8, 2025 at 11:30am, the second bald tire completely blew out while I was driving on 595. This was not just an inconvenience—it was a life‑threatening situation. I could have been killed. The fact that this dealership allowed such unsafe tires to be sold or installed shows a complete disregard for customer safety. This is absolutely unacceptable. Their negligence puts lives at risk. Avoid this dealership at all costs

November 29, 7:57pm
supposedly changed the brakes and the rear brakes are grinding another safety issue

November 30 6:54pm
before leaving McMahon I’d asked to check the fluids.  Then when they supposedly charge brakes to check the fluids again.  Guess what they never checked all the fluids were gone.

December 2, 11:34am McMahon was supposed to fix the brakes well, surprise they did not fix the brakes putting me and my family’s life in danger. FLORIDA STATUE legalclarity....
