How to read a Genesis G70 VIN — every digit explained

Every Genesis G70 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this G70.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your G70 VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
  • Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

I went go put gas in the car but as I start driving I was riding lost power of the car I pulled over but it was a school bus behind me that the bust drive had called the police I got out the car I seen smoke from the passionate side of the car seeing smoking. So I step back seen that the motor was on fire then it started busting out the windows and tires. It burnt up the car so bad that they had go get more water. Engine & fuel pump is the components that need to be checked upon request. & not yet it haven't been expected about the insurance yet but they is going too, safety risk caught on fire.

2021 G70

Summary of Reported Behaviors Lurching: Commonly reported, often deemed a software/adaptive issue. Brake Issues: Commonly reported, often attributed to pad-to-rotor deposits, or in some cases, the recalled ABS module. I started my car in my work parking lot. When I put into Drive the car lurched forward aggressively. I immediately applied the brakes and they pulsated but did not stop the car. My car continued moving forward across the parking lot and right over a large railroad tie. I am very afraid of driving the car. If someone were coming across the driveway they would have hit me or if someone was walking to their car I could have hit them. I have not driven the car again since the incident so no one has inspected the vehicle. The front collision warning started coming on the day before. I did not notice it on during this incident. This car is only 5 years old and I am now terrified to drive it!

2020 G70

On 2/17/2026 I was driving from my home to a fast food restaurant one mile away from my home. After picking up the food I dropped the food off about 3 miles down the road to my family member at their work and drove the 3.3 miles back from my family members work to my home. I arrived at my home and was walking into the house around 12:30 pm my car was off and locked. During my drive the car performed completely fine, there was no codes, no noises, no smells, the car drove how i would describe as intended. But at around 12:45 my neighbors were banging and ringing my doorbell to tell me that my car was on fire. I proceeded to escort my aunt and my grandmother out of the home as i watched my car continue to smoke and watched the flames continue to rise. Once removed from the home i called 911 who took my information down and informed me that a similar call was received a new minutes before and that fire, police and EMS were on the way. I watched as the car completely engulfed in flames and the fire department worked to put the fire out. The car is completely lost and resulted in damages to my garage and my other car parked next to it. I know previous genesis models have had recalls for issues in the engine bay that could result in fires. I do not see a recall for my vehicle but given the unexplainable cause of the fire at this time, believe it may be beneficial to submit a report.

2023 G70

While accelerating to highway speeds, the vehicle suddenly experienced a significant and continuous loss of power. Even with the accelerator fully pressed, the vehicle would not increase speed beyond roughly 50 mph. Based on the behavior and previous service history, the issue appears to be related to the engine, fuel delivery system, or overall powertrain. The incident created a serious safety concern for both the occupants and surrounding traffic. The vehicle could not properly accelerate, merge, or respond to normal highway conditions. Hazard lights had to be activated, and the vehicle remained in the slow lane for an extended period to avoid faster-moving traffic. The issue was consistent and repeatable throughout the drive. Multiple attempts to accelerate resulted in the same lack of response, and the loss of power persisted for the duration of the trip. The vehicle has not yet been inspected following this occurrence because when turned off and turned back on, the issue goes away and happens sporadically. It is also worth noting that the vehicle previously underwent a manufacturer-covered repair involving the high-pressure fuel pump, for which a warranty extension had been issued. This loss of power occurred after that repair was completed. No warning lights, alerts, or prior symptoms were present before or during the incident. Overall, the sudden loss of propulsion at highway speed posed an immediate safety risk, as the vehicle was unable to maintain appropriate speed or safely maneuver with traffic.

2023 G70

While driving at highway speed, the vehicle experienced a sustained loss of motive power. Despite the accelerator pedal being fully depressed, the vehicle would not accelerate beyond approximately 62 mph. Based on the symptoms and prior service history, the malfunction appears related to the fuel/propulsion system, engine, or powertrain. The vehicle is currently parked and available for inspection upon request. This failure placed the safety of the occupants and other motorists at risk. The vehicle was unable to safely accelerate, merge, pass, or respond to traffic conditions. Hazard lights were activated, and the vehicle was forced to remain in the slow lane of the highway for an extended period to avoid being struck by faster-moving traffic. The problem was reproducible and occurred repeatedly during the same trip. Acceleration was tested multiple times, and each attempt resulted in the same loss of power with no response to throttle input. The condition persisted for the entire drive. The vehicle has not yet been inspected following this incident. However, the vehicle previously received a manufacturer warranty repair involving replacement of the high-pressure fuel pump, and the manufacturer has issued a warranty extension for this component. The loss of motive power occurred after that repair. No warning lamps, alerts, or messages were observed prior to or during the failure. There were no warning symptoms immediately preceding the loss of motive power. This loss of propulsion at highway speed created a serious and immediate safety hazard due to the inability to maintain normal traffic speed or maneuver safely.

2023 G70

The fuel delivery system, specifically the fuel pump and fuel rail pressure system, has malfunctioned and continues to trigger diagnostic trouble code P0191 (fuel rail pressure sensor range/performance), despite a prior recall-related software update performed by the dealer, and the vehicle and all affected components are available for inspection upon request. While driving on the highway, the vehicle suddenly began stalling, hesitating, and hard jerking before losing power and entering limp mode, limiting speed to under 50 mph and forcing me to immediately pull over, which created a serious safety risk to myself and other drivers due to the sudden inability to maintain highway speeds. The issue has been confirmed by an authorized dealer through repeated diagnostic scans showing the same fuel system fault codes, and the dealer has determined the fuel pump now requires replacement, indicating the recall update did not resolve the underlying failure. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealer on behalf of the manufacturer, and prior to the failure the check engine light illuminated and has remained on since, with symptoms escalating abruptly and occurring without warning, making this an ongoing and unpredictable safety issue.

2023 G70

Dealer did not complete recall while in service Nov 15 2024, service order shows parts are on back order. After 2 months I reached out to Corp who reached out to dealer. Both copr and the dealer ended up calling back just yesterday, however the message from copr stated the part is ordered it's way but the message from the dealer stated software upgrade needs to be done first before ordering parts. But why software upgrade was never done 2 months ago while performing service? I can smell excess gasoline 5 mins after remote started and my thermometer temp spikes significantly upon start. Car has only 12k miles. I am afraid car is going to burn down and they will do everything possible to avoid repair/replacement. I'm hoping this would create a record of historical events as well as poor service performance by the dealer.

2023 G70

I have had my car for almost 6 months and in that time frame twice my car while driving on the highway my car went into limp mode and was not responding. I was unable to accelerate. It was almost like I wasn’t able to control my car. All lights on the dash came on. I recieved DTC error code p061b00. My car so far has 7000 miles on it and I leased it in November 2023. After shutting the car off for a while the car would go back to normal with just the check engine light and and shortly after the check engine light would go away too. I don’t feel comfortable driving my vehicle at this point. Please help with this situation

2023 G70

I was driving in a parking lot and the cars engine shut off completely for 2 and 1/2 hours. I was stuck in the lane blocking traffic with hazards on.

2022 G70

The contact owns a 2022 Genesis G70. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated to maintain automotive power while the accelerator pedal was depressed. No warning light was illuminated. In addition, the vehicle failed to exceed 45 MPH occasionally and went into LIMP Mode. The vehicle was restarted as a temporary fix. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed; however, the failure was not duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.

I was driving on major highway around 66.mph and the car lost acceleration and dropped to 45.mph quickly and It wouldn't accelerate when I hit gas pedal. I was almost rearended om highway because of this. I quickly pulled onto shoulder. Car is currently under manufacturer warranty and being assessed by dealership. It did generate a code P0190 upon scan. However, dealership cannot get it to replicate at this time. Pending information from dealership. My car did.not fall under first recall for fuel.pump issue but it should now. See code below.

This has happened to new and older G70s, there has also been numerous LEMON LAW buy packs under this exact LIMP mode issue being way more prevalent. I have gotten the supposed "fuel pump" recall which is what is directly affecting this issue and the problem persists. Genesis is aware of the issue and extended the dual pump warranty extensively. My car is extremely unsafe at random intervals during my daily commute. This issue is extremely dangerous and could cause a horrific crash. The car basically turns into a slug even when flooring the pedal to try and speed up, this makes merging and changing lanes on these New York highways extremely dangerous. There is an inherent problem with the design of this car in terms of how the fuel pump and fuel pump sensors operate. Genesis is aware of the issue and does nothing to fix it because wait for catastrophic failure of a competent and worse a crash that could result in a fatality.

My vehicle is covered under Safety Recall 023G involving an ECU update, inspection for DTC P0088, and high-pressure fuel pump replacement if inspection criteria are met. The recall is listed as completed, however the high-pressure fuel pump was not replaced, and the dealer has refused replacement. Only an ECU update was performed. I continue to experience fuel pressure–related symptoms consistent with the recall condition. The dealer has declined further action and has not provided documentation showing inspection results or justification for non-replacement. I believe the recall was improperly completed, creating a safety risk due to potential loss of engine power or stalling. I am requesting NHTSA review.

I experience a lack of power issue when driving the vehicle and attempting to accelerate past 40-60 mph. I will floor the accelerator and the car still stalls and will not accelerate. This has been terrifying when merging onto the highway and realizing this issue is occurring, as it is sporadic and not noticeable on residential/low speed drives. In the videos I've taken, you can see the engine RPM increase to approximately 4k RPM; the gear indicator continues to show "D," indicating the RPM increase was due to a throttle-induced downshift as opposed to shifting with the paddles; and the vehicle speed fails to increase as would be expected at the necessary throttle application for the RPM to be at that level. I have taken my vehicle to to the genesis service dealership at least 5 times for this issue and it is still a recurring issue. Many genesis owners complain about this issue on forums with no resolution from Genesis.

A 2024 Genesis G70 with 10,860 miles suffered a severe multi-system safety failure. While driving at highway speeds, the vehicle executed unexpected, unprompted automatic emergency braking (phantom braking) X2 with no forward threats present, creating an immediate highway collision hazard. Prior to this, the forward-facing cabin multifunction camera assembly near the rearview mirror experienced an electrical short and thermal runaway event, reaching a recorded surface temperature of 363°F and causing occupant blister burns to fingers. The failure caused a total collapse of the ADAS sensor grid, shutting off the Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping systems, HDA, etc. Additionally, the vehicle exhibits a severe rear differential/driveline humming, a drastic drop in fuel economy to 10.3 MPG, an A/C condensation line blockage flooding the lower undercover, and a replacement headlight housing with a dangerous 25-foot dead spot. Werner Hyundai looked at the vehicle which was 3 days days without resolution, and it has now been flatbedded to Jenkins Genesis of Ocala. The vehicle remains an unresolved, dangerous safety defect.

UNINTENDED VEHICLE MOVEMENT AT STARTUP - POTENTIAL CLUTCH DEFECT On January 17, 2026, at approximately 1:59 PM, I started my 2019 Genesis G70 (manual transmission) while parked in my garage. The vehicle was in Neutral with the parking brake engaged. I depressed the clutch pedal fully before pressing the start button, with no foot on the accelerator. Immediately upon starting, the vehicle lurched backward at significant speed without any driver input to accelerator, gear shift, or parking brake release. I attempted to stop the motion by pressing the brake pedal firmly but the vehicle continued moving. The vehicle struck the garage door frame (bending the driver's door backward), nearly pinning my [XXX] son between the door and garage structure. The car continued across my driveway, struck my neighbor's parked Lexus RX 350, then crashed into the neighbor's garage door and siding. RELEVANT PRIOR HISTORY: - February 7, 2025: Genesis authorized clutch/transmission repair at Rick Case Genesis dealership - February 27, 2025: Dealership stated car was ready, but upon arrival, technician could not release vehicle because it would "not shift gears" or "move" - March 5, 2025: Vehicle released; clutch engagement point was unusually high - December 2025: Clutch pedal required full depression to shift reliably - January 2026: Difficulty shifting in cold weather unless car was warmed up POST-INCIDENT OBSERVATIONS: - Clutch engagement point was on the floor (abnormally low) - No dashboard warning lights appeared before or during incident - Backup camera did not activate - EDR data (downloaded by Genesis March 5, 2026) confirms 0% accelerator pedal and 0% engine throttle throughout the event INJURIES: Minor (skin abrasion to my toe).

There is a constant wheel bearing-type noise that is distractingly audible above ~40mph, and the whine is load and annoying at ~80mph, coming from the rear of the car. There is a constant droning and harmonic pulsating noise that cannot be attenuated with the car's active noise suppression technology, either. It is an otherwise wonderful car, but this whining is going to become more of an issue now that summer is here and the windows will be down. The pitch of the whine increases in frequency as the road speed increases, and right/left steering movements or accelerate/de-accelerate activities don't seem to affect the intensity of the rearend bearing noise. The ever-present noise (our mileage of just over 25k) has grown over the last ~5k miles to be rather unpleasant inside of the cabin, and our current scheduled maintenance visit did not produce a solution for the ever-present noise.

2022 G70

I am reporting a recurring drivetrain defect in my 2022 Genesis G70 3.3T Sport Prestige AWD (current mileage: 20,000 miles). The vehicle produces a prominent, loud mechanical whining and droning noise specifically when driving within the speed range of 55 mph to 65 mph. The issue is highly load-dependent: the noise significantly intensifies and gets louder when decelerating/coasting down through this speed window without the brakes applied and it is very prominent on smooth roads or highway. The sound distinctly originates from the front front-end/drivetrain area, heavily pointing to an issue with the front axle differential ring/pinion gear mesh or a failing pinion bearing. The manufacturer (Genesis Corporate) and authorized local dealership Genesis of [XXX] have acknowledged hearing the noise but are currently refusing to perform repairs or replace components under the factory powertrain warranty, claiming that because another vehicle of this specification make the same sound, it is a "normal operating characteristic". A severe, loud drivetrain whine that worsens on deceleration indicates mechanical play or improper factory tolerances. Left unaddressed, a failing differential or bearing can bind or fail catastrophically at highway speeds, posing a severe sudden locking hazard and safety risk. Although it's believed to be an issue with the fuel pump, this specific one is not listed under the fuel pump recall.

At around 8:45 a.m. On jan. 19, 2020, i left my house, drove to the entrance of the subdivision, and turned left onto the city street. Because of the bad weather in earlier hours, i knew that the road was rather icy. So i was extra cautious and estimate my speed was around 25 mph (posted speed limit is 40 mph). Just about 0.1 mile from entering the city street, i saw that the street light about 100 yards ahead of me was red. I turned my signal to go into the right lane (street had become 2 lanes vs one lane at that point) while starting to gently push the brake pedal to further decelerate. All of a sudden, the car seemed to do its own thing, sliding and turning almost 90 degrees and hitting the snow bank on the right hand side of the street, causing significant damage to the front of the car (preliminary estimate of $3,743 which may go higher). When i started decelerating, my speed must have been around 25 mph. Although i don't know the speed at the point of impact, it must have been rather low since the air bags did not go off and i did not get any whiplash. Of course, i was wearing my seatbelt. Here is what i believe happened: this car has a strange-feeling brake. If you push gently on it, after a couple of seconds it brakes harder and indeed jerks the occupants before stopping. I knew this irritating thing for a while since i had owned the car since the spring of 2019, but never thought that it could become a hazard. I believe when i pushed on the brake gently on the road, it started braking harder after a couple of seconds and the car went out of control on the rather icy road. I do not know if the esc system comes into play as well or not, but i am confident about how the brake acts. This braking condition in my car has been verified by another driver and i am open to further verification. I am now concerned about the safety of this car.

It comes with bremo calipers but not bremo pads, rotors, etc. I've spoken with a lot of people over social media and a lot of people have this same issue and the only thing that seems to being done is shaving and replacing the rotors/pads with the same ones that have the issue. Many have solved the problem by relying on aftermarket pads and rotors which are expensive due to the sportiness of this vehicle. I don't believe we should have to buy expensive aftermarket parts to fix a safety hazard and potentially void any warranty when we buy/lease a new expensive vehicle. The braking system of a vehicle is one of the most important parts and this needs to be resolved asap, thank you! *tr
