Failure of Integrated Charge Control Unit (ICCU). Vehicle stopped charging 12V service battery from main high voltage battery. Displayed "Check Electric Vehicle System" followed by "Stop vehicle and check power supply". Vehicle to operate normally though Cruise Control stopped working. Continued to drive the few miles to our home. Once home checked service battery with battery monitor. Showed 12.1V and did not show battery being charged with vehicle ON (Ready) or OFF. Had vehicle towed to Hyundai service facility where the ICCU failure was confirmed.

The Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) failed on my 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5. The vehicle stopped charging prematurely overnight via AC Level 2 charging and then refused to charge again at all. The ICCU is responsible for maintaining the 12V battery by topping it up during normal operation. No warning or check engine light came on, I was only made aware when I attempted L2 charging and the car would refuse to take the charge. I understand that with a failed ICCU, if I'm unaware of the failure (e.g., relies solely on DC fast charging which bypasses the ICCU), the 12V battery can deplete without warning while the vehicle is in motion, potentially causing sudden loss of vehicle systems including power steering, brakes, and other safety-critical electronics. The vehicle was parked at the time charging failure was discovered. No injuries occurred.

ICCU Failure causes the car to not work.
Feb 27, 2026
The vehicle lost its ability to charge via AC power sources (level 1 and level 2), and the "Check vehicle electrical system" warning appeared on the dash. When using an OBD scanner, DTC P1E01 was present. It was inspected by a dealer, who informed me that the ICCU is in need of replacement, despite this component having been already addressed by a previous recall. Unfortunately the replacement component is backordered and there is no ETA available on the fix. For the time being I am limited to level 3 DC fast charging, which is a major inconvenience but does not represent a safety risk to myself or others.
Feb 18, 2026
The ICCU component popped and blew seconds before I entered the on ramp for an interstate. My car immediately entered "turtle mode" and capped my speed at 10 mph. I crossed 4 lanes to get out of the turn ramp and get to a parking lot. The car alerted and stopped driving as I pulled into the lot. The car provided no warning before and has the 3 prior software recall fixes. It was unsafe for the car to suddenly stop working. 30 seconds more and I wouldn't have been able to pilot the car to a safe spot. Dealer has car and confirmed that the ICCU is blown and destroyed the 12v battery, which is less than a year old. They were willing to provide it to you. It is still at the dealership, as Hyundai national stopped shipping replacement ICCUs apparently in January.
Feb 16, 2026
Vehicle stopped charging and will not charge using a level 1 or level 2 charger. It will charge at a level 3 charger only. Took it to a Hyundai dealership and they did a software update and said it was fixed. Took it home and still would not charge. Took it to another Hyundai dealership and they said it was an ICCU issue they had been seeing and it would need to be replaced. I have read from many other Hyundai Ioniq 5 owners about the ICCU being a weak point in the car and having to have it replaced, some multiple times. When I tried to charge with my level 1 charger at home, it tripped the breaker, which is concerning. The message on the dash was simply, "check battery system".

I own a 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 that experienced a battery failure while still under warranty. The vehicle became completely undriveable in late November 2025 and had to be towed to a Hyundai dealership. The vehicle has now been sitting at the dealership for more than 90 days waiting for a replacement battery with no repair completion date provided. The dealership indicated that the required battery component is unavailable or on extended backorder. While a loaner vehicle was provided, the original vehicle remains unusable for an extended period due to a major battery defect. This raises concerns about reliability and the availability of critical components needed to repair electric vehicles when failures occur.
Mar 05, 2026
The component that failed was the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU). This component has failed twice within the past ten months. The failed components are not available for inspection, as they were replaced during prior service repairs. The failure created a significant safety risk because it resulted in a sudden loss of normal vehicle function without advance warning during operation. This placed both myself and others on the road at risk, as the vehicle could become disabled unexpectedly while being driven. The issue has been inspected and confirmed by dealer-authorized mechanics following each occurrence. There were no earlier symptoms prior to the moment of failure. Warning messages related to the vehicle’s electrical system appeared only at the time the malfunction occurred. At the time of each incident, the failure occurred without advance warning during operation. Failures of the ICCU are believed to occur due to electrical overcurrent and thermal stress damaging internal power components during high-voltage to low-voltage conversion. When these internal components fail, the system may no longer maintain the 12V electrical supply, which can lead to loss of vehicle function or sudden loss of motive power during operation. Software updates have been issued to address the issue, but failures have continued to occur.

The ICCU died a second time
May 17, 2026
ICCU failed at 20,000 miles, 2 years after I first got the vehicle. Blue link showed the P1a9096 ICCU code failure. Car could not be driven for more than a few minutes then the message to stop safely came about and car would die. It took the dealer 2 months to replace the ICCU with the SAME defective part. It is only a matter of time before it fails again.

My Hyundai IONIQ 5 has repeatedly lost 12V power and shut down. The vehicle had to be jumped by AAA multiple times. After being restarted, it died again, and after two days of use it was dead again. I am concerned this is related to the known ICCU / 12V battery charging issue affecting IONIQ 5 vehicles, which can cause loss of motive power or make the vehicle undrivable. The vehicle is currently at Hyundai Southern States in Raleigh, NC for diagnosis and repair.
Apr 27, 2026
There was sudden power reduced and turn to the limp mode(Turtle symbol popped up). After pull over my vehicle to highway shoulder, the vehicle became total power loss. Unable to drive anywhere. It was a dangerous situation for my family. We waited tow car and took my vehicle to Hyundai dealership which located close to my house. They diagnosed my car and after a day. They told me it needs to be replaced a ICCU assembly and Fuse. There was no ETA for the parts. They provided me a loaner’s car. After about 15 days, they fixed and I was able to take my car.

Car indicated 12v battery was critically low and that I should stop safely. I was just starting it in a parking lot. This is a classic ICCU failure and the car is up to date on all recall updates. The car requires manual key unlocking for outside access at this point, and the rear hatch is only unlockable using the manual release mechanism which is recessed into the rear hatch and needs the key. The back two doors cannot be opened at all, from either direction and the handles don't work when the electrical system has failed and the child lock was engaged accidentally when it happened. This legitimately terrifies me for anyone traveling with back seat passengers who need quick exit. There isn't one.

On 11/7/25 , we were driving my 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 to a friend's home in rural [XXX] , a trip of approximately 160 miles. At around 5:00 PM, we stopped about halfway to our destination to charge the battery. The car would not charge above 47%. While we continued to attempt to charge the battery, the console displayed a Check Electrical System Warning message, and we received the DTC P1AA700 via BlueLink. We were concerned about our safety on the drive up to the mountains. We were afraid the car would stop running on the highway and cause an accident. We were also concerned the car would die in a remote area and we would be stranded. However, the dealership was closed for the weekend. We drove carefully to our friend's home. I contacted Stevens Creek Hyundai on 11/10/25 and arranged to bring the car in on 11/11/25. It had 13,652 miles on it at that time. Eventually, the dealer confirmed the DTC P1AA700 and said they would need to order a new EGMP battery. The car was in the shop for 128 days, waiting for Hyundai to "build a battery" in [XXX] . Eventually, Stevens Creek Hyundai replaced the EV battery and I picked up the car. Given the delay in repairing my car and the growing evidence of Hyundai battery failures, we wanted to report this problem to the authorities. 7 incidents of electrical drive problem incidents 1-3car would not start despite full battery Incident 4 same thing and car went to dealer, they said know problem and they would fix it overnight by downloading new software and charge about 400 for new 12V battery Incident 5 While on freeway using cruise control card speed varied wildly I disabled cruise control and with manual throttle same problem Incident. 6 In middle of traffic car went blank no lights or anything. I tried to restart 3 times and nothing, so I sat back and was in process of calling for tow. I did nothing and car violently accelerated and turned into steel pole. Only injury I had was bump on head that went away. As soon as the ghost mode engaged I hit the brake which likely prevented more damage to me, but front end of car was damage Incident 7 While I was detained someone else drove car to dealer and driver reported felt like driving on ice with rapid direction and speed changes Currently at dealer where neither dealer or Hyundai will take of problem and I get run arround from Hyundai and dealer. Dealer claim the don’t know is the problem. Dealer has had car for approximately 65 days Bottom line, the car is totally unsafe to drive and very dangerous

Crash: 1
Injuries: 1
While driving, the vehicle displayed a “Check Electrical System” warning and experienced loss of propulsion power. The vehicle became inoperable and required towing. The Hyundai dealer diagnosed failure of the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU), a known failure point on this platform. The ICCU is currently on backorder with no confirmed repair date. This failure creates a serious safety risk, particularly if it occurs at speed or in traffic. I no longer feel the vehicle is safe or reliable to operate.
Feb 05, 2026
High-voltage battery system failure causing complete loss of propulsion. Vehicle entered "turtle mode" (reduced power warning) at 25% charge, then became completely immobile — unable to move even on flat surface. This has occurred multiple times. Charging system displays "fully charged" within one minute while vehicle dashboard shows 60% — clear battery management system malfunction. Vehicle has been undriveable and awaiting battery replacement for over a month at this point with no information on when the battery will arrive or be in stock. This is a known widespread defect in Ioniq 5 vehicles. Multiple owner reports document the same battery system failures, extensive reports of ICCU failures, and Hyundai's solution is to replace these failing components with the same component that fails repeatedly in other vehicles. No permanent fix or design change has been issued. This is a critical safety defect. Vehicle becomes completely immobile without warning — total loss of propulsion in traffic creates immediate crash and stranding risk. False charge readings mean the vehicle cannot be trusted to complete any trip safely. I have been left stranded multiple times on the turnpike of 80mph speed limit due to sudden total system failure. Hyundai has not resolved the root cause. They continue replacing batteries with the same defective system. This vehicle is fundamentally unsafe and unreliable. I should not be required to drive a vehicle with a battery system documented to fail catastrophically and repeatedly. Service records and repair invoices available upon request — vehicle currently at dealer awaiting battery replacement.

Car lost charge quickly, went into limp mode while I was driving on the highway. I had to pull of the road several times and try to get it to a charging station. It barely made it after the lose of power. Charged it to 80% and it would only go up to a range of 100 miles. Took it to the dealership and they confirmed it needed a whole new main battery. ICCU had already been replaced. Had to wait over 5 months for replacement parts.

On Sunday, March 1, 2026, my vehicle suddenly malfunctioned while I was driving. The car abruptly lost power, would not accelerate beyond 25 miles per hour, and then completely shut down within minutes. This left me stranded on the roadside off the highway, which was both dangerous and extremely distressing. The vehicle was towed to the dealership, and it has now been four days with no updates regarding the diagnosis, repair plan, or estimated timeline. I have repeatedly attempted to get information but have received no meaningful communication. This situation is unacceptable for a relatively new vehicle and raises serious safety concerns. In addition, I rely on this vehicle daily and am currently without transportation.

My car reported an error "check electric vehicle system" and would not drive over 25 mph. I had it towed to the nearest Hyundai dealership. This was after the car repeatedly killed the 12 volt battery. This is a common issue known with the ICCU.

The ICCU on my Ioniq 5 failed about a year after getting the software update that supposedly addressed the issue. I am very concerned about the reliability of my car going forward as it doesn't appear Hyundai has addressed the issue and I have no reason to think the replacement ICCU component won't fail as well.

ICCU failed while at highway speeds (65mph). Car went into 'turtle mode' limiting the car to 10mph. No warnings were provided prior to the incident. I was in the left of three lanes and had to make emergency actions to get to the Right shoulder across traffic. Traffic was obstructed. Was left stranded until a tow truck was available. Dealer confirmed ICCU failure.

The car had no power on Monday [XXX]. It was taken taken to Tasca Hyundai in Hartsdale NY. The service manager told me it was the ICCU and 12v battery. This had previously been repaired on 12/11/24 under recall according to Hyundai's own records. The current service manager has no idea when the part will be available, possibly not for weeks. The car has been serviced according to Hyundai's maintenance schedule and recall notices. In fact the car went for maintenance one week prior to the part failure. No recall notice for this failure has been issued INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My vehicle displayed a Check Electrical System failure warning and experienced a complete loss of electrical power. Since it is an electric car, the car would no longer run. No light including emergencies lights worked. This happened to me in my driveway. But it happens to other owners driving down the freeway and they suddently have to pull over. Hyundai advised me to have the car towed to the dealership service center where they diagnosed an ICCU failure. This has been happening to to 2-5% of Kia and Hyundai electric cars. I was told the ICCU was on extreme backorder. I waited ~6 weeks for my car to be repaired. Note that there were two recalls for the ICCU unit previously and I performed those recalls promptly. There were no other warnings at all before the Check Electrical Systems error and sudden loss of power.

While charging my vehicle at home using a level 2 charger, the ICCU failed. When it failed, it caused a power surge and my level 2 charger “exploded.” It also caused the master breaker to trip, cutting the power off to my entire house. The vehicle no longer charges, will not drive over 25mph and has to be towed to a dealership for repair. Also, the level 2 charger is fried and no longer works.

I am writing to notify you of an Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) failure on my 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5, purchased in October of 2023. While driving home on March 4 2026, the dashboard displayed the warning "Check vehicle electrical system," and then a "pull over safely" warning. I had to leave the vehicle in a parking lot and walk home. It was towed to a dealer on March 5, 2026 to diagnose and repair the problem. The car has just under 17000 miles on it. I was told the dealer was swamped with Ioniqs with this problem and had no ETA for parts. Fortunately they will be able to repair our car next week. Hyundai claims the replacement part has been redesigned to address the problem. Interestingly, I'm reading that Hyundai has issued a recall for some vehicles of this make and model year for this very serious issue; mind bogglingly we received no such notice.

We had the Internal Charge Control Unit replaced due to a warranty recall a couple years ago and it failed again on Dec. 23, 2025. The car has been at the dealer ever since, waiting for a replacement ICCU. The car refuses to charge and the dealer has diagnosed the issue as a faulty ICCU. There were no warnings or problem indicators prior to failure. This is our only vehicle, so while there was no safety issue, there is definitely a convenience issue. We had to obtain a loaner.

On Mar 29th, I got a 12v battery low voltage warning sign at 4pm. Jumpstarted the car and drove back to the home. On Mar 30th, car would not start so I had it towed to Downey Hyundai by roadside assistance. On Mar 30th, 12:41pm dealer confirmed that the it will need an "ICCU" and have ordered the part, but there are no loaners and no ETA for the part at this time. Problem has been reproduced and confirmed by dealer. There were no other warning signs prior to the failure.

My car failed to charge on my level 2 home charger and would only charge on a level 3 fast charger. Because of this, I was unable to charge my car at home. I was on a trip about 1 hour from my home in an area of Massachusetts that developed an electrical blackout. I almost ran out of power on a dark road with no streetlights. I was lucky to find a level 3 charger just on the outside of the blackout area when my car had less than 5% power. I brought the car to the Hyundai service center 2 weeks ago. I called daily for updates and was told they were "diagnosing" the problem. I called again, yesterday and was told it needed an ICCU. It had been ordered that afternoon (2/5/26) and they hoped it would arrived within the week. They were unable to provide a loaner car (even though I've been without a car for two weeks).

My 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 lost all power and stopped in the middle of a busy road. I had no power even when I pressed the gas. Nothing in the car worked, including the hazard lights, which made it even more dangerous as cars were speeding past me. I was finally able to call the police to come help and they set up a safe area. However, I was put in an unsafe situation while I waited for assistance from the police. In addition, there was no way to put the car in neutral once the power was off (at least I couldn't find a button or a switch to do that), which made it difficult to get it towed. I understand the car died on me because of faulty ICCU on my car. Btw, the car had just finished its software update earlier that day. I am not sure if this somehow contributed to the ICCU failure.

Hyundai model Ioniq 5 (all years and trim styles) have a known issue with ICCUs (Integrated Charging Control Unit) that fail. This component controls charging of the 12 volt battery, and in turn electrical systems. Hyundai replaced my ICCU, but I am concerned it may fail again, as the underlying issue does not seem to be known or addressed. When the ICCU fails, the vehicle can suddenly lose the ability to move. This can be extremely dangerous if the car is in motion and unable to safely pull over. Luckily, my ICCU failed in the middle of a parking lot. Many Ioniq 5 owners report this issue, some multiple times on multiple ICCUs.

On 12/13 while driving back home at a red light at night, we heard a loud pop at the driver's rear side and suddenly the dash displayed a warning stating "Check electric vehicle system". The car then would not drive past 25 mph and kept flashing the warning. We got it home safe, and planned on dropping it off at the dealership the next day after jumping it. The next day however, after multiple attempts to jump the car's battery, it would not start enough to move it. The car would start and then flash a warning saying that the 12V battery voltage is low and then shut off again. It had to be towed on 12/15 to the dealership where they will be doing an diagnosis.

Having the same ICCU Failure that all other Ioniq 5 owners have. On February 26th, I was heading to work when I heard a pop and car displayed warning lights saying check EV system and stop safely. Car was limped home and towed to dealer. Was told fix will take a month.

ICCU Failure — Severe Safety Risk and Repeated Incident The ICCU in my Hyundai has failed twice. Both times, the car suddenly and completely lost power while I was driving — no warning lights, no gradual slowdown, just total loss of control. This created an extremely dangerous situation that put me, my passengers, and everyone around us at risk. When the ICCU fails, the vehicle shuts down instantly and becomes completely inoperable. During the most recent incident, I spent more than eight hours on the phone with Hyundai attempting to arrange a tow. When the tow truck finally arrived, the driver instructed me to shift the car into neutral. The moment I did, the car died again and became stuck in neutral, preventing the driver from towing it. He then left, unable to assist, leaving my disabled vehicle parked on a public road — on a hill — where it posed a further safety hazard. Hyundai’s response to these failures has been temporary at best. This issue continues to reoccur, making the vehicle effectively unsafe to drive at all times.

Had all previous open recalls for iccu performed. No previous warning in car. Driving unto free way. Loud noise like a tire pop. 12 volt low power warning on dash screen. Car began to lose power. Picture of a turtle shows up. Low power warning. Car lost power within 10 seconds. And couldn't accelerate. Extremely dangerous. Once completely stopped the car turned off and couldn't start again. Was able to get car to turn on with jumper cables by tow truck. But couldn't get to "start" engine. Dealership says the 12 volt battery and iccu needs to be replaced. They are blaming the issue on the fact that I had an aftermarket subwoofer installed and don't want to cover under warranty. Car ran fine with said subwoofer for a year prior with no additional changes. Have used same subwoofer and amp on multiple cars with no issue.

The car lost its ability to accelerate during rush hour on a very busy interstate while I was in the far left lane. It started by jerking really hard off and on, like a very hard brake for a second, and then normal for a few seconds, and then hard braking again. I could accelerate after the "braking". There were no warnings or errors. This continued for about a minute while I was trying to decide if it was triggered by accelerating or braking, and I couldn't figure it out. At that point, I couldn't accelerate and received a number of lights and a message to check the EV system or the electrical system. I don't remember because at that point I was trying to immediately figure out how to pull over and not get hit. Luckily, it was slow enough and traffic had just thinned out enough, having passed a popular exit, so that I could coast to the shoulder across all of the traffic. I noticed at this point that the car was in neutral. I couldn't shift into drive, however. I tried to see if turning it off and back on might help. It did at that point. There were no error messages, and I could shift into drive and drive normally after turning it off and back on. Again, I wasn't concerned with documenting an error message that I assumed would be stored. The car is available for inspection. The safety of myself and my kids and other drivers around me was at risk as we could not accelerate and I was in the far left lane to the right of an express lane and left of a lot of traffic to have to cross to get out of traffic. No, the problem has not been reproduced, and it was taken in the next morning to the dealer who found nothing wrong and no stored error codes. No lamps or messages appeared before the loss of acceleration and promptly disappeared after restarting the car. Nothing was stored for the dealer to retrieve, either. The dealer ran diagnostics and found nothing wrong.

There seems to be a wide spread issue with the foam on the interior of Ionic 5 tires, Michelin 235/55/R 19. The foam dislodges from the interior of the tire and causes severe vibrations when driving at over 60 mph. The issue causes the tires to be unbalanced and can cause damage to the car. Wondering why Michelin doesn't address this issue and issue a fix other than stripping the tires of foam. My Hyundai dealer told me this is an on going issue and they have received no guidance from Michelin or Hyundai.

On [XXX], while driving north on [XXX] to Michigan, I stopped in Carmel, IN to charge my 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE RWD vehicle. After charging, I reached 45mph and immediately experienced violent shaking of the steering wheel and seats. The vehicle was immediately driven to Hyundai of Carmel for inspection and possible maintenance. A service technician drove the vehicle and experienced the issue, but could not recommend a solution. The vehicle was driven back to Louisville, KY (home location) and taken to a Tire Discounters the following morning. At Tire Discounters, a technician drove the vehicle and experienced the same behavior, but could not provide a solution. Numerous trips to multiple Hyundai dealership service departments and tire service centers (Big-O-Tires and Tire Discounters) resulted in no solutions. After extensive research, a potential solution was identified by the vehicle owner relating to the noise-isolating foam located on the inside wall of the tires. There are numerous reviews on Michelin's website documenting this specific issue with the tires. A call to Michelin costumer service successfully concluded with a warranty claims number. However, none of the previously mentioned tire service locations would investigate because the vehicle only had 6,400 miles and the Hyundai dealership service departments refused to address the problem. Ultimately, Pep Boys accepted the Michelin warranty claim and found that three of four tires (Michelin Primacy 235/55R19 101H) that came as part of the original vehicle purchase had the internal isolation foam disconnect from the tire belt and gather in a central location inside the tire. There has been no evidence of notices or information from Michelin to dealerships or service departments regarding this issue and the potential for dangerous driving conditions or damage. Michelin Primacy AS 235/55 R19 - OEM tires on Hyundai Ioniq5 acquired new in September 2023 - mileage at the time of incident 10,800 miles Front tire started went off balance causing steering wheel vibrations and shaking that increased with speed - car was not drivable above 55MPH due to excessive shaking and vibrations of steering wheel - this presents safety concern as it may lead to loss of control and excessive wear and tear on other suspension / wheel components. I took the vehicle to a local tire shop (Town Fair Tire in Norwalk CT - authorized dealer of Michelin tires) - got wheels rotated, balances and alignment adjusted. The issue persisted - on the second visit tire shop dismounted one of the tires and discovered internal foam band unglued and clumped on one side of the tire causing off-balance. The shop recommended removal of the foam material and rebalancing of the tire to correct the manufacturing error.

My car has 16000 miles and originally came with this exact tire brand. Apparently, because I drive an electric vehicle the tires have sound dampening foam on the inside of them. They are supposed to break down slowly with time however the last four months I have had two incidents where the foam became unglued from the rest of the tire, balled up, and caused a huge amount of shake in the car as I drove at speed 60 mph or higher. It did not affect low speeds. This is a safety hazard. The first time it occurred, I considered an outlier and Michigan did replace the tire. The second time it happened , only a few thousand miles later I asked that the foam be removed from the tire as I am concerned that this is a safety hazard moving forward. Michelin needs to have this tire recalled. I asked the Hyundai dealership if other ionic five drivers with the same tires had come in with the same issues. They said absolutely we see it every day. Why is this tire still on the road. I reached out to Michelin and they Refused to refer me onto anybody to discuss this further. They also refused to pay for the foam removal process. That is why I’ve decided to involve you. Please feel free to contact me at [XXX] to discuss further. The brakes lights do not illuminate when slowing down using regen braking. This has cause cars to stop very close to rear-ending me. This video explains this issue in great detail https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0YW7x9U5TQ
May 26, 2023
The regenerative braking will not turn on brake lights unless the accelerator is fully unpressed. In the more aggressive modes (L3 and I-Pedal), the stopping power is very strong. Without brake lights, it catches other motorists off guard and they nearly hit me. For reference, I-Pedal mode is able to bring the car to a full stop on its own. This is dangerous. The brake lights need to come on depending on the rate of deceleration, not the accelerator pedal state. This can happen at any speed, but becomes more dangerous at highway speeds.
May 25, 2023
When using most of the regenerative braking levels, including the one-pedal driving mode named “i-Pedal,” the brake lights will not illuminate until the drivers foot is fully off the gas pedal, or manually applying the brakes. This can create a dangerous, life threatening scenario leaving surrounding drivers unaware the vehicle is slowing. This has not been reproduced by the automaker not inspected by them, police, insurance, etc but has been verified on video. No warning lamps appeared.
May 25, 2023
Brake lights do NOT come on when decelerating in I-PEDAL mode and Level 3 regen brake modes, perhaps more. The car should instead generously apply brake lights by default anytime deceleration occurs via regen braking.
May 25, 2023
Brake lights do not lit while decelerating using regen braking system without letting foot off of accelerator. There is no indication for vehicle behind mine to decelerate which can result in collision

I was traveling 70mph on Interstate 70 when I heard a loud “pop” sound and the car immediately slowed down to 20mph in heavy traffic. The care then would not go over 20mph.The car was charged at home the night prior. On the dash was the “stop vehicle and check power supply” warning. This is the very common ICCU issues known to plague the Hyundai EV fleet. This is very dangerous when your are in heavy interstate traffic going at a high rate of speed.

I was driving at night on a freeway marked as a 65mph speed limit. I had the adaptive cruise control turned on and set to automatically follow the road speed limit. There was intermittent rain at the time. Suddenly my car began to accelerate, but I was able to stop the acceleration by stepping on the brake to disengage cruise control. I tried re-engaging cruise control and it immediately accelerated strongly again. That is when I noticed the cruise control speed had been set to 85mph. I disengaged cruise control for the rest of my trip home and was able to drive normally. Subsequently I learned that the car detects speed limits by both map data and visually recognizing speed limit signs, so I assume it mis-identified a 65mph sign as 85mph. The auto speed feature set the cruise control speed to 85mph even though that is much higher than any possible speed limit in California. I disabled the auto speed feature of the adaptive cruise control and have not had any problem since then.

The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, a Jeep veered into the driver’s path, and the Forward Collision Avoidance: Automatic Emergency Braking system failed to activate as designed. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who determined the vehicle was working as designed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was taken to another local dealer, Feldman Hyundai of New Hudson (30492 Lyon Center Dr., New Hudson, MI 48165), who stated the vehicle was working as intended. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 15,000.

I'm surprised there are no safety recalls on this vehicle given how Cruise Control operates & how close to the Cruise Control toggle switch the steering wheel is indented for hand placement at 10 a.m./2 p.m.We purchased a 2023 IONIQ 5 on 02/25/2023.When the vehicle was delivered to us we were not told that the cruise control does not disengage when the brake pedal is applied. It merely pauses. There is nothing in the owner's manual that addresses cruise control operation. In any other vehicle we have owned, including other Hyundai vehicles, cruise control cancels when the brake pedal is depressed.Without proper training/information & without cruise control being addressed in the owner's manual we had no way of knowing this.2 months after purchasing the vehicle, while pulling into a parking space driving 3 MPH I stepped on the gas & the vehicle returned to the previously set cruise control of 45 MPH.Whereupon it went over a parking bumper, landscaping, curb, $ into a busy street, scraping the passenger rear portion of the vehicle & damaging the wheel. We took the vehicle to the dealership, Larry H. Miller on 05/03/2023. They were unable to duplicate the mishap. The GM of the dealership indicated that in all probability what occurred was inadvertent touch of the toggle switch. He indicated that this unique cruise control operation was experienced by others, including himself. On 05/24/203, he recommended we contact Hyundai Motors USA to report the incident.Doing so resulted in numerous phone conversations, emails, and 2 inspections of the vehicle. Finally, on 10/19/2023 we were advised in a HMAUSA letter of resolution that said, "no manufacturing defect was identified." They are refusing to pay the $2,247.92 repair bill (on 04/26/23.May be higher now due to rising costs.)We maintain the incident occurred due to a design flaw & unique cruise control operation. We not only want Hyundai to pay for the repairs, we want the NHTSA to investigate so this won't happen to anyone else.

While driving on the highway, after about 45 minutes, the electric vehicle goes into Turtle power-limited mode. The vehicle instantly reduces in speed from 70mph to as low as 35 - 45 mph. There are no warning lights or sounds. If you immediately stop the car and let it sit, it will work again temporarily but after 30 - 40 more min or less of driving, it will again go into turtle mode. Additionally, acceleration is non-existent when its power is limited, inhibiting the ability to safely drive as required to pull over or across intersections. This has been a constant event occurring multiple times and each time the vehicle has been on a freeway or highway. The dealer applied the repairs in the photo supplied, but they did not work.

On [XXX], I received a warning on my 2023 IONIQ 5 that said “stop vehicle and check braking system” and the car went into “turtle mode”. I took it into the dealer for repairs and they said the issue was related to the 12V battery and returned the car to me as repaired. Then, on [XXX], I was driving the car and I got the same error message but this time the car’s brakes didn’t work. Thankfully, I was able to pull off the surface road I was on and pulled into a residential area where I used the parking brake to stop the car. I then had it towed to the dealer and they are currently in the process of repairing it. My son and I were in the car at the time of the [XXX] incident and were very fortunate that we did not hurt anyone or ourselves when the brakes didn’t work. As of today, the Hyundai dealer (Roseville, CA) says they are repairing a brake component that was defective but they missed this on the 2/28/26 inspection. 12/30/2023 at approximately 5:30pm I drove home with the iPedal engaged. The iPedal was installed as a download to the car in August 2023. My daughter was in the passenger seat. I began to back into my driveway but shifted to Drive to straighten out the car. The car began to roll forward I took my foot off the accelerator but the car did not stop in spite of the iPedal being engaged. I put my foot on the BRAKE PEDAL which went all the way to the floor to no avail. The car rolled slowly into an electrical pole which brought the car to a stop. I previously filed a complaint here but I have since learned that iPedal may disengage if the car is put into reverse. There is not warning light to alert the driver that iPedal is disengaged so the driver is not aware that the brakes may not work as expected. I believe this may have been the case with my accident. However, this does not address why using the foot pedal for the brakes did not stop the car. Have found many complaints about this on various forums and believe this aspect of iPedal needs to be addressed. It should not disengage unless the driver instructs the car to do so. I have not been able to find documentation of this functionality in the manual, but I have searched and will continue to do so.

Neither iPedal nor the foot brake pedal had any effect on the car. I then put the car in reverse and backed the car into my driveway and the brakes worked as expected. When I then attempted to charge the vehicle, the charging port would not open. I could hear the motor working to open but it would not open. On 1/11/2024, I again attempted to open the charging port and this time it did open. So, TWO different electrical (including the brakes and the charging port) were not working properly. Inasmuch as the charging port again worked and the brakes again worked, there clearly was a malfunction that was random and unpredictable and also nearly impossible to reproduce but if this happened once, it could happen again. The brakes failed. Had we been traveling on a busy road, or at the top of a hill, we would have faced significant bodily harm, death to ourselves or others. This car had been driven locally, predominantly on local roads. The car is available for inspection and has only been driven on the dealer lot since the the incident. There were no warning lights or messages to indicate that any issues existed. The manufacturer has executed an inspected but has not reproduced the problem. The manufacturer and dealership claims the car is safe to drive without addressing the brake failure. I do not believe the car is safe to drive without a determination of how the bake failure happened or without a repair to that issue.

One month ago, my car experienced an failure and the warnings on the dash reported to check the electrical supply and then to stop driving the car immediately. I had it towed to a dealership who reported the ICCU failed and it'd take 1-2 weeks to get replacement parts and repair. A month later, I was just told the part is on indefinite back-order and they have no ETA when a replacement part will be available. Hyundai is selling an unsafe vehicle without that can die on the road and have no way to fix the issue. Google "Hyundai ICCU failure" and you'll see this is a systemic problem and Hyundai is doing nothing to fix these issues and is putting out 2025 models that are dying on the road with no solution.

EV goes into power limited mode when on interstate when going ~50 miles while driving 70mph or more. Happened each of my 3 times on interstate of about that distance. First time was Sat 4/29 while in eco mode with 70% battery and 82°F outside, 1 hr drive 50+ miles. Second time was in normal mode Friday 5/12, 55% battery 72°F outside 1 hr drive 50+ miles. Third time was in normal mode and it happened after 42 miles. I scheduled a service after the first incident but they were only able to take it on 5/31. When this happens you lose ability to accelerate and have to coast to the side of road and let it sit for 10+ minutes to clear and then can resume, I would take surface roads after it occurred. Impacts safety for self and others, as it drastically slows without brake lights causing a high chance of being rear ended. The last incident was close to it. As it was getting worse I stopped driving on interstate with it. Car has been at the dealership's service department since 5/31. They were able to easily reproduce once they finally got to it. They diagnosed a bit and then consulted design engineers. Diagnosed on and off for a couple weeks and have finally decided to replace the drive motor. Part received Friday 6/16, to be installed tomorrow 6/20. We'll see if that addresses.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
3 complaints
Incident occurred when head-in parking in a space pointed into an stores exterior wall. There were no parking/wheel stops, just pavement then wall. No adjacent cars. I was decelerating with foot completely off accelerator and over the brake pedal. The car is an EV and was in 3rd level of regenerative braking, slowing down quickly. As I completed the turn into the space and began straitening the wheel, the car suddenly and rapidly accelerated and crashed into the wall. The only likely explanation I have is that I inadvertently pressed the Driving Assist button with my right thumb or hand while turning the steering wheel, which would have activated Smart Cruise Control, and, if the necessary conditions were met, set the minimum speed to 30 km/hr. The car manual states: "If your vehicle speed is between 0 - 20 mph (0 - 30 km/h) when you press the Driving Assist ( ) button, the Smart Cruise Control speed will be set to 20 mph (30km/h)." The Foward Collision-Avoidance Assist was set to Active Assist, which should have applied the brake to stop from colliding with the wall, but instead the car accelerated. (Note, the parking assist feature does not usually recognize head-in parking.) The car has two Driving Assist settings: Based on Drive Mode and Based on Driving Style. If the latter is selected, three additional features are set on sliding scales: Distance (close to far), Acceleration (slow to fast), Response Speed (slow to quick). These three settings are adjusted automatically based on the car's interpretation of the driver's driving style, or they can be manually overriden. I have never changed these settings. Post-incident I checked the setting and it was set to Based on Driving Style with Acceleration=Fast. Concerns: Is Driving Assist to easy to inadvertently activate? Should Driving Assist not activate at very slow speeds and not auto-set to 30k/h? Why did Forward Collision-Avoidance not activate? Drive Assist should not default to Based on Driving Style.

HELP! I now regret that I bought a Hyundai Ioniq 5. I hoped the recent campaign would fix my problem, but I think it is now worse. While driving my speed drops 3 to 4 miles per hour, then the car lurches forward to regain my speed. At first I thought it was when using cruise. Now the car does it on the highway even when not using cruise. When it starts dropping the speed, the accelerator is not responsive. I have to wait for the car to slow completely down before the throttle will respond. I do not notice the problem around town. It seems to cruise fine for about 50 miles and then begin to slow and speed up out of my control. I think it is a safety hazard. It certainly drives me and my passengers crazy. PLEASE DO SOMETHING!!!

Driving on the highway, my car will suddenly lose power momentarily and the speed drop 3-5 mph. My accelerator is unresponsive. Then the car will accelerate quickly with a jerk to accelerate to the set speed. May occur on level ground but often occurs at the bottom of a hill. I have no control during this loss of power.

Due to a heavy brake application a water bottle in the back seat spilled and the water traveled under the drivers seat. This resulted in multiple car systems going offline, vehicle reporting LKAS error and inability to turn the car off. This essentially bricked the vehicle. Repair in order to correct the shorts and corrosion from the water both the drivers seat and main floor wiring harnesses require replacement cost estimate approximately $12,000. These key electrical connections under drivers seat are not adequately protected from simple water damage. This in my opinion makes the vehicle unfit for use as a family EV SUV as a simple water bottle still should not be able to brick a car. I consider this a design defect and the manufacturer is not covering this under warranty.

Several times now the "Check Driver Assistance System" and "Check Lane Assist System" have come on and stayed on. I brought the car dealership, and they fixed it--but only temporarily--the problem recurs within a few days of the fix. All of the sensor cameras are clean. I have read that a weak 12-volt battery can cause this problem, but the car has only 28k miles on it, so the battery should not be weak yet. I will bring the car back to the dealer (again) and have them check the 12-volt battery strength. But I am at the point where the "check system" messages are on more than they are working correctly.

I suddenly received errors that my sensors weren’t working, and I can no longer use my cruise control. The car has less than 60,000 miles so it still has the full bumper to bumper warranty. I have never had a collision. So I took it in to the dealer and they said the camera was mis-aligned and is not covered under warranty. It should be covered as I’ve never had a collision. Based on my online research, many people with Hyundai Ioniq 5s have experienced this same issue at no fault of their own, so it is a systemic problem. 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 ICCU failed with DTC P1A9096 which renders the vehicle in limp mode once the 12V battery drains. ICCU ASSY and Fuse had to be replaced as well as the 12 volt battery which failed a few weeks after. The car lost power on a main road 2/3/25 and we were just able to get into a parking lot. The message to check power supply came on and we lost power immediately. The 12 volt battery failed when I went to pick the car up from the dealership after they worked on the bluelink settings that had to be reconfigured a couple weeks later 2/25/25. I was lucky that I didn't have to be towed that time. I had just got into the car to leave and the warning message came on to check the power supply. My dealer service dept was wonderful. I have absolutely no complaints about them but I am angry that Hyundai is putting these same bad parts in the 2025 Ioniq 5 and we can't trust our car! We love this car and were planning to buy another one but will wait to see if Hyundai does the right thing and fixes this problem.

When parking in a supermarket parking lot I slowly approached the space while braking. As I turned left into the space and released the brake pedal to allow the car to slowly roll into the space as I always do, the car surged as if someone floored the accelerator. I veered left to avoid a head on collision with the parked car facing me and went diagonally between the right front fender of that car and the left front fender of the car parked in the space to my left. I sideswiped both sides of my car and damaged the front fenders of both cars before I was able to apply the brake and bring the car to a stop. There was a mother with her two young children loading groceries into the car in front of me. Fortunately I avoided hitting anyone, but the witnessed the accident. I was in shock. My car suffered $25 in damages. There is absolutely no way I accidentally applied the accelerator, and if I had I would never have floored it! The car malfunctioned. I reported this incident to Hyundai also. They supposedly were sending someone to inspect the car at the auto body repair center.

Driver was moving forward into a space in a parking garage between two other vehicles. Driver had pulled most of the way in and was slowly inching forward. As the car came to a stop, it suddenly lurched forward, hitting a concrete wall. The collision warning system did not alert, and auto-braking did not occur. The car was in Regen Level 3, and Auto Hold was not activated. In the months prior to this, the car twice had a similar situation when coming to a stop at an intersection with foot on the brake, then suddenly lurched forward, nearly rear-ending a car in front. There was no visible damage to the concrete wall, and a police report was not made. Hyundai says they want to inspect vehicle, but have not done so after a month. It is easy to believe that this was driver error, but it absolutely was not. Car lunged forward and accelerated into a wall with only the brake being applied. When driving in I Pedal mode (which is the one-pedal mode), the brake lights do not light up when decelerating, and it almost caused us to be rear-ended yesterday. Drivers pull aside me and tell me my brake lights don't properly come on when I slow down. Apparently this defect was on the national news several months ago and Hyundai promised a software fix by mid-July. I was just at the Carlsbad, CA Hyundai Service Center this morning and was told they do not have a software fix for this issue. This car should officially be recalled by Hyundai and the NHTSA and owners should be warned officially they are driving a dangerous, defective car.

The Ioniq 5 has a braking system that does not engage the brake lights on deceleration when in certain regenerative braking settings. This is dangerous as the car will quickly decelerate and not warn drivers behind you potentially causing a crash because they are unaware the Ioniq is stopping quickly. Please have Hyundai address the issue for recall.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING
2 complaints
When my car is configured to one pedal driving mode (iPedal), the brake lights only illuminate when the accelerator pedal is fully released. This means the car may decelerate rapidly (up to 0.25G or 2.5m/s^2 according to a report) under regenerative braking, while the brake lights remain off. I believe this is a safety hazard that can increase the chances of rear-end accidents.
May 26, 2023
While driving in the one pedal driving mode (“iPedal”), it is possible to rapidly slow the vehicle while keeping the accelerator pedal slightly depressed, which is the expected result for this regenerative braking mode. While rapidly decelerating in this mode, however, the brake lights do not illuminate while the accelerator pedal is slightly depressed. Even though regenerative braking is active and the car is rapidly decelerating, there is no brake light illumination. The brake lights only turn on if the accelerator pedal is not pressed at all, which during typical one-pedal driving only occurs at the very end when coming to a complete stop, or when stopping suddenly during a cut-in or at a light. This is a serious safety concern because the vehicle will decelerate very quickly with no visual warning lights to other drivers behind the vehicle. I have noticed that this issue has been reported by other drivers online, but I have not yet taken the vehicle to be inspected by the dealer. There is no indication of failure on the dashboard.

On XXXXX, while parked at a campsite approximately two hours from my home, the vehicle displayed an “electrical failure” warning on the dashboard. The vehicle had been parked for less than 20 minutes when this issue occurred. I contacted Hyundai customer support that same evening to report the problem (Case #XXXXXX). On April 4, 2026, the vehicle was towed via Hyundai roadside assistance to Winner Hyundai in Dover, Delaware, where Tracy is my current point of contact. This situation left my family of four, along with our belongings and pet, stranded without transportation. Despite significant effort, we were unable to secure a rental vehicle in the Dewey Beach area, even after contacting multiple rental agencies and the dealership directly. This was later resolved, and I am currently in a rental through Enterprise; however, the stress and uncertainty of potentially being stranded was significant and unacceptable. While at the dealership, my wife witnessed the tow operator unloading the vehicle without proper equipment to safely lower it. As a result, the vehicle’s hitch made forceful contact with the pavement and became lodged. Multiple dealership employees observed the incident. After considerable effort to free the vehicle, it was released abruptly and rolled into another vehicle on the lot, causing additional damage. An argument then occurred between the dealership owner and the tow operator, which my wife was forced to witness. Observed behavior: With the vehicle in Drive and the Auto Hold function active (indicated by the white “AUTO HOLD” indicator in the instrument cluster), I brought the vehicle to a complete stop by pressing the brake pedal. Auto Hold engaged (text now green), the vehicle remained stationary, and I removed my foot from the brake. After approximately three minutes of remaining stopped, a driver-assistance system error message appeared on the instrument cluster. At that point, Auto Hold disengaged (the “AUTO HOLD” indicator disappeared), and the vehicle began to creep forward on its own. I did not command acceleration, did not press the accelerator pedal, and did not intentionally release the brake. The movement was unexpected and created a safety risk. The first occurrence happened in a school drop-off line with the vehicle stopped near other vehicles and pedestrians. I have since reproduced the behavior and captured it on video. Related observations: Similar driver-assistance system errors have occurred while the vehicle was in Park and in Drive, with or without Auto Hold active. In those cases, the vehicle did not move because it was either mechanically locked or I had my foot on the brake. In all cases, Auto Hold deactivated. Safety concern: This behavior raises concerns about the reliability of Auto Hold and its interaction with braking and driver-assistance systems, particularly after the vehicle has been stationary for an extended period. Unintended forward movement presents a significant safety hazard. I am reporting this issue for investigation of potential defects in software, sensors, or control logic. Video evidence is available.

While stopped at a stop light, "check electrical system" warning flashed on instrument panel without any prior warning or malfunction. I was only able to move the car about 50 feet before all power and controls failed. I was in a middle lane and was barely able to move the car out of traffic. Tow truck driver with a large jump start battery pack was able to give it enough power for me to crawl it onto their flatbed, my small lithium jumpstart pack was only enough to get the rest of its doors unlocked. Battery temperature was about 30 degrees F, state of charge 75 percent, had been driving from home less than 10 minutes, car had been sitting outside for a few days. Problem diagnosed as ICCU failure by dealer service department, now waiting on replacement part to complete repair.

My 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 suffered a sudden Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) failure that put me in grave danger. As I left my workplace in the evening, I heard a “pop” sound and got the dashboard warning, “Check Electrical Vehicle System.” It was unclear what the warning meant. I had 65% charge left at that point. As I began driving, the gas pedal “stuck,” not allowing me to accelerate past 25 mph, and it felt like the car was dragging. I did not know what was happening. The “Check Electrical Vehicle System” warning returned but gave no indication of whether it was safe to drive or what to check in the electrical system. Driving very slowly, I made it out of the military base (my workplace), parked outside of a closed establishment, and called my husband. He told me to drive further up the road to a well-lit shopping area. I exited the parking lot and entered the intersection of a four-lane highway – and suddenly, when I was in the center about to turn in the direction of traffic, the car stopped and would not respond to the gas pedal. I could not accelerate and was stuck in the middle of the highway. After several frantic pushes on the gas pedal, I was able to coast downward to the shoulder and exit the vehicle. My husband and I had brought the car to the dealer in February 2025 for the December 20, 2024 ICCU recall (NHTSA Recall 24V-868, Hyundai Recall 272). The dealer merely inspected the car and updated its ICCU software. Per Hyundai guidance, it did not replace the ICCU itself. It is taking no apparent steps to do so for 2023 Ioniq 5 owners, leaving us in danger. The seriousness of this problem is compounded by the lack of adequate warning when it occurs out of the blue. The generic “Check Electrical Vehicle System” indicator on the dashboard did not indicate what precisely in the electrical system to check, how serious the issue was, or how much of the 12-volt battery power was left. Hyundai must rectify this issue before others are hurt.

The vehicle is under an active federal safety recall, which under 49 U.S.C. § 30118–30120 requires dealers and manufacturers to repair recalled vehicles promptly, without regard to profitability or cost. Despite repeated written requests, Pedder Hyundai (Poway, CA) refused to perform recall repairs, obstructed resolution, blocked corporate contact, and threatened to tow the vehicle illegally at my expense within 48 hours, demonstrating reckless disregard for consumer safety and federal law. A police report documenting criminal endangerment, conversion, and aggravated consumer endangerment is pending, and the lender of the vehicle has been notified of breach of contract. Vehicle stopped responding to all inputs while cruising on the highway. Vehicle was charged and running fine up until that point, for about 40 minutes of continuous driving. Accelerator pedal, regen paddle shifters, cruise control buttons all would not work and display was unresponsive. Vehicle slowly lost speed as if it was shifted into neutral, forcing us to pull over to the side of the road. Turning vehicle off, waiting for a minute, and turning it back on restored functions. Vehicle malfunction occurred right after a busy intersection on LA highways and we were able to make it to the shoulder, but if it had happened just 1-2 minutes earlier, we would have been in a lot of traffic merging in and out of lanes at significant speeds. There were no warning lights, messages, or auditory alerts during the occurrence. Vehicle simply lost all power. When I took it into the dealer for inspection the next day, the service staff were unable to find any issues or errors during diagnostics. Battery health was in the green and vehicle checked out fine and was released to me after a thorough inspection.

These cars had an open campaign earlier in the year to check for faulty ICCUs. Mine was check in Jan and deemed to be good. In early Feb I was driving home alone late at night and suddenly I was unable to go faster than 20mph and in a matter of minutes the car shut off. It had to be towed and the dealer informed me the ICCU failed. It was very scary and extremely dangerous. This has been happening so often with the Ioniq 5's and there should be a mass recall.

The first time the "aux" battery was not charging completely. 2nd time pretty much same issue, they claimed to have performed a software update, 3rd time warning lights came on "Problem, check electrical system" ..something like this. They told me to bring the vehicle to the dealership. After reading the problems stem from the ICCU, I decided to call them to ask if I should tow it in, due to all the warnings. After this we could not even get into the vehicle or drive it. Took us and the tow driver 4 attempts to get it out of the garage, down driveway and it had to be pulled onto the flat bed. They agreed and said that if there were any tow fees, they would pay them. Furthermore they said they would supply a vehicle to use while mine was being repaired. This was on Jan 25th, they still have not returned my vehicle, claiming they are waiting on parts, I've had to call them to check on it, this week NO contact what so ever.

On [XXX], I was pulling into my driveway when I heard a loud “clunk” and an error message came up on the dashboard saying “Check Electric Vehicle System.” I checked the 12V battery which was at 11.9 volts, so I first tried charging it with an external battery charger. However, the error message still came up, and when I tried driving on my street it was limited to 25 miles per hour, and eventually I got the error “Stop vehicle and check power supply” and the car slowed to a crawl. There was no warning prior to the failure. I had the latest ICCU software update recall performed at Capitol Hyundai in San Jose, CA on December 30, 2024. The next day, I had the car towed to Capitol Hyundai; a week later they diagnosed the problem as a blown fuse and ICCU failure. There is no estimate on when they will receive a new ICCU part to repair it. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Several days ago, the twelve volt battery on my car was replaced because the car just suddenly died overnight while sitting in my garage. They told me that the battery needed to be replaced when I went to the dealer. They replaced it and now less than a week later, I was driving on the highway and suddenly the car Slowed to no more than 27 miles an hour with warnings about the electrical system not working and a problem with the battery. I had to put my flashers on while I was driving down the highway until I was able to pull off and have the car towed to another dealer that was closer to the scene. Not sure what they are going to say, but obviously this was very scary as well as a nuisance.

Due to an extreme failure in the integrity of the OEM tires, the vehicle experienced violent shaking a speeds in excess of 45mph. The shaking resulted from the extreme unbalanced nature of the wheels due to displaced noise-isolating foam inside the tire. As these tires were installed when the new vehicle was purchased, there is a significant issue with the fact that none of the dealership service stations visited to address this issue could identify a problem. Additionally, all three dealerships refused to work on the tires or help address an obvious problem for a vehicle with only 6,400 miles. While the warranty for the tires lies with Michelin, the complete lack of response or care by Hyundai representatives on a component with such a high failure rate is extremely unnerving and problematic.

Hyundai Ioniq5 acquired new in September 2023 - mileage at the time of incident 10,800 miles - Michelin Primacy AS 235/55 R19 - OEM tires installed by the manufacturer. Front tire started to go off balance causing steering wheel vibrations and shaking that increased with speed - car was not drivable above 55MPH due to excessive shaking and vibrations of steering wheel - this presents safety concern as it may lead to loss of control and excessive wear and tear on other suspension / wheel components. I contacted Hyundai and reported this as a safety issue as well.

I bought my Ioniq 5 in April 2023, starting in June 2023 I started having issues with the internal navigation system locating my vehicle on a different route than I was actually on. When I connect to Apple CarPlay to be able to use Google Maps or Waze, it also throws my cell phone system off and will be taken into wrong streets. Vehicle navigation also detected me driving in the wrong direction alerting me not to enter the street. I took video and photos to the dealer starting in June 2023 for a few months. They first updated the software which took over 6 hours, and my car spent the night at the dealer. Unfortunately it did not resolve the problem, they then replaced the antennae also not resolved issue. They replaced the camera in front of the rear view mirror, also no resolution. Lastly they replaced the head unit under warranty. My car continues to have the same issues with navigation and recently while on the freeway and the navigation and Apple CarPlay were acting up, when i switched lanes it alerted me of a collision and car began to break while driving 65 miles per hour. This could have caused me to be rear ended if there would have been a vehicle behind me. I do not feel safe driving this vehicle which i depend on the navigation maps for my daily work. Currently i am avoiding driving on freeways to ensure the car does not suddenly brake and cause me to be rear ended. I contacted the dealer and they stated they have not detected the same issue on other Ioniq 5's sold at Puente Hills Hyundai in California. In researching through the internet, i found there are others experiencing the same issue. Dealer asked me to bring my car in once again, but i am not sure what they can do. Hyundai needs to figure out the issue on the Ioniq 5 navigation system and issue a recall to fix the safety glitch with the system.

The car loses power, slows down dramatically, and will not respond to the accelerator pedal. This failure has happened twice. The first time I was driving at about 40MPH on a side street when the car started slowing down with no warning and limped along at about 20MPH. I could not get it to move faster so I put my flashers on and made my way to the side of the street, pulled off of the road and shut the car off. When I restarted the car it drove normally. I reported the failure to Hyundai and they had never heard of this happening. They kept the car for 2 days and couldn't replicate the problem. That was about 2 months ago. Yesterday, 3/4/24, I was on the freeway going about 74MPH using the smart cruise control. I had just changed lanes when the car lost power and I got the message, "Smart cruise conditions not met." My speed dropped to the low 40's as other cars were whipping past me. Even though I floored the accelerator I got no response. I started the flashers, made my way to the right lane and got off on an exit ramp. I pulled off to the side of the ramp, parked the car and turned it off. Once again, when I restarted the car it performed normally. This is very dangerous! I could have easily been rear ended by another, faster car on the freeway since I slowed down so quickly without braking lights lighting. I brought it back to the dealer again today and they have kept it to run diagnostics. I don't expect that they will find any problem this time either.

Additional concern, talking to other drivers, they have similar issues and responses from the Hyundai dealerships. This is for both the Ioniq 5 and 6. The navigation system in this car has an additional feature which is always enabled even if a destination is not programmed into the nav system which is supposed to warn drivers if they are going the wrong way on a highway. Intermittently the system erroneously indicates that the driver is going the wrong way. A voice warning is repeated issued and a warning symbol is displayed on the instrument panel. It is shocking, very distracting and frightening at first. Then it becomes a driver irritation, and eventually the driver tries to ignore the constant warnings, completely defeating the purpose of the safety feature. I’ve seen on the Ioniq forums where other drivers have reported this intermittent problem. Our local dealer would not check our car because the nav system was not failing at the time we brought it in. The problem can last for 5 minutes and then stop or can last for a duration of a car trip. For drivers unaware of this problem, they could easily be frightened enough to cause unsafe driving.

Driving the vehicle on the highway for longer than 60 miles at highway speeds the vehicle goes into “power limited” mode and a turtle pops up on the screen. You are unable to accelerate the car and once this happens you have to leave the car off for at least 5 minutes and then not drive above 65mph again or it will keep happening over and over. After taking it to the shop Hyundai Corporate said we need to drive the car again to see if they had fixed it. Approximately 65 miles into the trip it happened again and this time I was almost rear ended and cars were swerving around me on the shoulder to avoid crashing into me. Hyundai is saying that they cannot reproduce the issue but they are not driving the car on the highway for more than 60 miles. The safety of not only myself and my family is at risk as well as other people on the highway behind and next to us. The vehicle is currently at the dealership and they said there are no error codes so they don’t know what’s wrong. The only warning that popped up said “power limited” with a turtle.

The following is an incident that happened yesterday to my wife, who is an experienced driver: Whilst driving south on I5 from Seatac toward Tacoma in heavy rain with surface spray the screen above the steering wheel mentioned collision avoidance was not working and radar was not working. When I applied the brakes to slow down no response from the brakes. I then let off the brake and tried several times to apply the brakes each time with no success. I still had full control of the steering and could still steer the car. This lasted for about 30s then the brakes started working again. The error messages regarding collision avoidance and radar not working would continue to pop up even after the brakes were working. After stopping the car and turning it off and restarting several hours later the car no longer displayed any error messages. No vehicle or passenger were hurt in this incident, however if the traffic had slowed or stopped this outcome could have been very different.

When driving my new Hyundai ionic 5, the dashboard display is set up such that when I am in my preferred seating position, and my hands at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel, I cannot see the spedometer reading. I basically don't know how fast I'm going and less I change my hand position or move my head. This requires a fair more amount of time for me to take my attention off the road. This is not an isolated incident. I have asked my friends, who range in height from 5'2 to 6 ft 3 to do the same thing. They all report the same problem when they are in their preferred seating position. I am also noted many complaints about the same issue on the ionic 5 internet boards. This problem is caused solely by Hyundai's choice of a main display layout. This is the way it is laid out from the factory, and there is no way to change the speedometer position on the main display as a user.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned: Rear electric motor. Specifically the "engine oil pump" that is used to cool the rear motor. The pump does not respond to MCU commands and does not cool the motor. This causes the motor to overheat after about an hour of highway driving causing the motor to provide VERY limited power. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk: When the above happens the car experiences a delayed throttle, and very little power to accelerate. This occurs while traveling on a highway where you may need to pass, but no longer have the power to do so safely. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center: Dealer took the car in and did not properly attempt to reproduce the issue. Then stated that if the car does not produce a DTC then there is no issue. The dealer has since refused to accept the car again. This has been reproduced here: https://www.ioniqforum.com/threads/rear-motor-not-operating-45-min-after-charge.46007/ Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others: No, I have just started the process of reaching out to the manufacture, and if this fails I will be using my states lemon laws. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear: No this issue does not appear to throw any codes, lights, or messages. The dash shows the rear engine producing no power, and the throttle will only show half when pressed to the floor.

The Ioniq 5 when using level 2 regen, level 3 regen, and i-pedal (one pedal driving), does not turn on the break light when decelerating, even if coming to a full stop unless the driver removes their foot completely from the pedal or hits the break pedal. These driving modes allow the driver to perform regenerative breaking almost to a complete stop without turning on the break lights and warning other drivers behind you. With i-pedal specifically, the driver can 100% perform all stop and go traffic maneuvers without using the break and never have the break lights activate. This appears to be the default behavior of all Ioniq 5 vehicles and is controlled via software. The vehicle does not appear to measure rate of deceleration so even if the driver were to decelerate rapidly, the brakes would not activate. This has been extensively demonstrated on youtube and the best video example of this problem can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0YW7x9U5TQ

When using the most aggressive braking energy recovery mode in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (i-Pedal), the brake lights do not illuminate despite the aggressive nature of the braking provided by this mode. This mode brings the car to a full and complete stop and is very similar to commanded braking via the brake pedal. When using the L1-L3 braking energy recovery modes, the deceleration experienced by the car is more or less mild enough that it would be similar to a downshift in a manual transmission car. But the brake lights only illuminate if your foot is fully off the accelerator pedal. I am not aware of the regulations or SAE guidance to know if this is consistent with best practice, but it could be better with the brake light coming on once a certain deceleration (x m/s2) is reached. It is my opinion that a software change in the car's ECU could effect a fix for this. A mandatory recall would force the issue with Hyundai to actually do something about it. Note that Kia and Genesis share the same basic EV platform and may share the same logic fault in brake light activation. Here is a Youtube video that discusses the issue in a fair level of detail - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0YW7x9U5TQ

The Ioniq 5 offers a multi-level regenerative braking system, which slows the car down to varying degrees when letting off the accelerator pedal. While these systems work well to increase efficiency, the behaviour of the brake lights while in use is concerning. Very often the car is slowing considerably, enough to be akin to light braking, but the brake lights do not activate. This can be full let off the accelerator pedal and slowing with not brakes, or with a partial lift (especially on higher regen levels), where the vehicle is obviously slowing but the brake lights do not activate. This has been talked about on various forums and some review videos, and I expect this is not the first complaint placed about this issue. So far it has not caused a problem with my vehicle, but I have had to alter my driving habits to account for this, and it at times renders some of the vehicles technology dangerous to use, despite that technology being added to the car as a benefit to the driver under most conditions.

When using i-Pedal (one-pedal driving) mode in this vehicle, it can decelerate at a very fast rate but does not illuminate the brake lights unless the driver’s foot is completely off the pedal. For example, I can be driving 60mph and decelerate to ~2mph as quickly as other drivers coming to a complete stop, but my brake lights will not illuminate until my foot is **completely** removed from the pedal. This is contradictory to the way one-pedal driving works, since coming to a smooth and slow stop requires that you slowly lift off the accelerator pedal, during which the brake lights do not illuminate because your foot is still pressing the pedal (albeit less and less as you come closer to the stop).
