My 2007 mazda5 power steering stopped worked abruptly while turning on a major highway. The sudden change in steering nearly caused an accident. I checked the ODB reader for codes but none were present. Then it happened again the next day in a similar situation, the power steering shut off but this time we were able to see the dash light for the power steering failure come on. It kicked back in a minute later. Again no codes in the scanner. Upon researching how to fix this issue my search revealed that 2007-2009 Mazda 5s have a recall for this exact critical failure. My next step was to call the local dealership to schedule a fix, however they told me that our specific vehicle (according to the VIN) was not under that recall, regardless of the vehicle doing precisely what was recalled. Please review the recall if you can, this is likely affecting more vehicles than Mazda is admitting to and is extremely dangerous.

SUDDEN POWER STEERING LOSS WHILE DRIVING ON AN ENTRY RAMP OF A HIGHWAY, ACCOMPANIED BY ILLUMINATION OF MULTIPLE LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD. STEERING LOSS OCCURRED WHILE VEHICLE STEERING WHEEL WAS TURNED AND VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION AND PREPARING TO MERGE ONTO HIGHWAY. STEERING WHEEL SUDDENLY AND VIOLENTLY JERKED FROM MY HANDS, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO STEER IN THE DIRECTION OFF THE ROAD. DASH LIGHTS (INCLUDING POWER STEERING) FLASHED INTERMITTENTLY, HOWEVER WOULD REMAIN CONSTANTLY ON WHEN STEERING WAS PULLED FROM CENTER POSITION. POWER STEERING LOSS WAS SPONTANEOUS, INTERMITTENT, AND WITHOUT WARNING. VEHICLE DID NOT RECORD ANY DIAGNOSTIC FAULT CODES WHILE LIGHTS WERE DISPLAYED. SYMPTOMS VEHICLE DISPLAYED COINCIDE WITH "RECALL SUMMARY" FOUND DOCUMENTED ON NHTSA RECALL 10V374000 FOR THE 2007 MAZDA5. INCIDENT OCCURRED BRIEFLY AT LOW SPEEDS WHILE PARKING ON 08/23/2019 AND RESOLVED AFTER VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED. INCIDENT REOCCURRED WHILE MERGING ONTO HIGHWAY AT HIGH RATE OF SPEED AS DESCRIBED ABOVE ON 08/25/2019. WHILE INCIDENT OCCURS AND LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON DASHBOARD, THE STEERING WHEEL MOTION IS VERY RESTRICTED AND THE WHEEL AUTOMATICALLY FORCES ITSELF BACK TO THE CENTER (NEUTRAL) POSITION. THE LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD WILL REMAIN CONSTANTLY ILLUMINATED WITH ANY MOVEMENT OF THE STEERING WHEEL AWAY FROM THE CENTER/NEUTRAL POSITION. THE RADIO ALSO HAS HELLO DISPLAYED, AS IF THE VEHICLE WAS JUST STARTED, EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION AND WAS NEVER TURNED OFF.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. A DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE CONTACT SHOULD TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THAT THERE WAS A TSB. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 114,000.

THE CONTACT PULLED OVER AND RESTARTED THE VEHICLE, BUT THE FAILURE SEIZED. THE FAILURE RECURRED NUMEROUS TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE POWER STEERING PUMP FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 10V374000 (STEERING). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 104,000.

THE CAR HAS LESS THAN 68,000 MILES. DIAGNOSED AS ALL SUSPENSION NEEDING TO BE REPLACED. THE MECHANIC DIAGNOSING SAID, " I WOULDN'T LET MY MOM DRIVE THAT CAR" AND THAT THE SUSPENSION COULD BLOW OUT AT ANY TIME WHILE DRIVING. ALL THE ARMS OF THE SUSPENSION ARE BAD/HAYWIRE AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. I NOTICED THAT OTHER 2007 MAZDA 5S HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. HOW I WOULD WISH THAT SOMEONE WOULD PLEASE CHECK IF THIS 2007MAZDA5 SHOULD ALSO BE RECALLED-EVEN THOUGH IT WAS MANUFACTURED IN A DIFFERENT TIMEFRAME THAN THOSE CURRENTLY IN RECALL. IT'S A POSSIBILITY YOU KNOW. PLEASE HELP. THERE IS A VERY LOUD RATTLING SOUND, THUDDING OF TIRES WHEN DRIVING AT ANY SPEED AND THE BACK TIRES DON'T FOLLOW OR "ROTATE" WHEN TURNING-THEY "SWING" AND STAY STILL, AS IF THEY LOCK. THE REAR SHOCKS ON MY 2007 MAZDA5 HAVE FAILED FOR THE SECOND TIME. THE FIRST TIME WAS IN THE 40,000 MILE RANGE. AT THE TIME I THOUGH IT WAS ONE SHOCK GOING BAD, AND IMPACTING AND CAUSING THE OTHER TO GO BAD AS WELL. BECAUSE I WAS OUT OF WARRANTY, I DID NOT RETURN TO MY MAZDA DEALER FOR REPAIR UNDER WARRANTY. ALSO I DID NOT GO TO THEM BECAUSE I FOUND A LOCAL GARAGE THAT PUT IN MAZDA ORIGINAL REPLACEMENTS AT A CHEAPER PRICE. HOWEVER, AT 89,000 MILES, MY REAR SHOCKS HAVE FAILED AGAIN! THIS IS BOTH DANGEROUS, AS THE REAR END IS UNSTABLE OVER BUMPY ROADS, AND VERY COSTLY TO DO EVERY 40 - 50,000 MILES. IN DECEMBER 2009 I WAS DRIVING BACK FROM ALLENTOWN AIRPORT AND WHEN I WENT OVER BUMPS THE BACK OF THE CAR SWAYED AND MADE A TERRIBLE KNOCKING NOISE. I TOOK IT TO THE MAZDA DEALER AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE FRONT BUSHING AND THE REAR TRAILING ARMS. THE CAR FELT VERY UNSAFE TO DRIVE, SO I HAD THEM DO THE WORK. THEY CHARGED ME 398.00 FOR A 45.00 PART. I'M STILL HAVING THE SAME ISSUE AND WHEN I CONTACT THE DEALER THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS PROBABLY BECAUSE ONE OF THE RIMS WERE BENT ON MY CAR! THIS IS NOT THE CASE. I HAVE DOWNLOADED A SERVICE BULLETIN FROM THE MAZDA SITE (NO 02-001/08). I BROUGHT THIS BULLETIN TO THEIR ATTENTION AND THEY SAID THEY DID NOT COMPLETE THIS WORK AND THAT I SHOULD BRING IN THE BULLETIN AND SHOW IT TO THEM. MY QUESTION IS IF THE BULLETIN SPECIFICALLY INDICATES THE PROBLEM THAT I REPORTED TO THEM ON DEC 2009, WHY DIDN'T THEY PERFORM WHAT WAS SUGGESTED ON THE BULLETIN? THERE IS MAJOR LEAKING FROM MULTIPLE UNKNOWN SOURCES, ONE PLACE THE WATER HIDES IS IN THE SPARE TIRE WHEEL WELL AND IT WAS NOT EVIDENT AT FIRST AS TO WHY THE CAR WAS MOLDING ON THE INSIDE. IT HAS TERRIBLE MICROBIAL GROWTH THAT IS EVIDENT AND I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT I CANT SEE. THE CAR TO MY KNOWLEDGE HAS NEVER BEEN IN ANY ACCIDENT TO CAUSE THIS. HAD THE HEATER CORE REPLACED BECAUSE I WAS TOLD THAT COULD BE A REASON WHY THERE IS WATER IN FLOOR , IT WAS REPLACED AND I WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE ORIGINAL ONE.. THAT WAS A YEAR AGO, AND IT HAS ONLY GOTTEN WORSE . WHEN IT RAINS THE CAR IS SOAKED EVEN WHEN THE WATER THAT IS IN THE WHEEL WELL IS SUCKED UP... I HAVE SEEN OTHER SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ONLINE, I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO . I HAVE CHILDREN ONE THAT HAS AUTISM AND ASTHMA AND THIS IS MY ONLY SOURCE OF TRANSPORTATION .... REFERRING TO A DECEMBER 18, 2006 RECALL NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 06V463000. REGARDING A PROBLEM WITH THE SLIDING DOOR COMING OPEN WHEN DRIVING DURING COLD WEATHER. MY VEHICLE HAS THIS PROBLEM WHICH IS GRADUALLY BECOMING WORSE AS TIME GOES BY. MAZDA SAYS MY VIN # WAS NOT INCLUDED SO THEY WILL NOT FIX IT UNDER THE RECALL. IF THAT IS THE CASE AND THEY WERE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM WHEN MY VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED, AM I NOT CORRECT IN ASSUMING THAT THIS MODIFICATION SHOULD HAVE BE RECTIFIED BEFORE THE VEHICLE WAS SOLD. ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS NOW WHEN WATER GETS INTO THE DOOR (CAR WASH, MELTED SNOW, ETC.) AND THEN TEMPERATURE DROPS, ICE INSIDE THE LATCH MECHANISM PREVENTS THE DOOR FROM LATCHING PROPERLY. THE DOOR WILL ONLY RELATCH WHEN THE ICE IS MELTED, OTHERWISE IT WILL CLOSE MOST OF THE WAY BUT THE DOOR AJAR LIGHT REMAINS ON SINCE IT IS NOT PROPERLY LATCHED. BOTH OCCURRED AT ABOUT 55 -60 MILES AN HOUR ON PAVED HIGHWAYS. ONE DELAMINATION WAS AT THE JUNCTURE OF THE SIDE WALL AND SURFACE THE OTHER APPROXIMATELY 2 INCHES ON THE RIGHT SURFACE. DELAMINATION WAS ABOUT A 1/2 INCH WIDE, ENTIRE CIRCUMFERENCE OF THE TIRE AND WAS DOWN TO THE WIRE REINFORCEMENT. BOTH TIRES HAD SUFFICIENT TREAD TO MEET SAFETY REQUIREMENTS AND WERE PROPERLY INFLATED. I HAVE SENT AN EMAIL TO MAZDA CUSTOMER SERVICE SUGGESTING THAT THEY DO A RECALL. The contact owns a 2007 Mazda Mazda5. The contact stated while driving at approximately 30 MPH and approaching a traffic light, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. The contact drove to his residence however, it was difficult to turn the steering wheel. The contact stated that the ABS and power steering warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who was not able to determine the cause of the failure. The contact stated that the dealer was contacted and confirmed that the VIN was not included in a recall. The contact researched the failure online and found NHTSA Campaign Number: 10V374000 (Steering). The manufacturer was not notified of the recall. The approximate failure mileage was 138,000.

THE SLIDING DOORS SEEM TO BE FROZEN AND THEY WILL NOT LATCH PROPERLY. ONE DAY WHILE MY DAUGHTERS WERE IN THE CAR WITH ME THE DOORS SLID OPEN AFTER I DROVE AWAY AND THEY THOUGHT THEY HAD CLOSED THE DOORS. THE OTHER TWO DAYS THE DOOR DID NOT SLIDE OPEN BUT THE LIGHT INDICATED THE DOOR WAS OPEN BUT WE HADN'T USED THE DOORS WE ONLY UNLOCKED THEM.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON THE NIGHT BEFORE. THE NEXT MORNING MY WIFE WENT TO RUN AN ERRAND BEFORE GOING TO CHECK THE CAR OUT AT THE DEALERSHIP, BUT SHE ONLY GOT ABOUT 13 MILES WHEN THE ENGINE BLEW OUT AND STARTED SMOKING. THE VEHICLE HAD APPROX 56K MILES AND THE ENGINE SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, BUT THE DEALERSHIP STATES THAT IT WAS NOT COVERED ANYMORE BECAUSE WE RAN THE VEHICLE THAT MORNING WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. THE DEALERSHIP STATED THAT THE ENGINE WAS COMPLETELY BLOWN AND THAT IT OVERHEATED. THEY STATE THAT THERE WAS NO COOLANT IN IT. THERE IS AN APPARENT DESIGN FLAW WITH THE THIRD ROW SAFETY BELT. THE ANCHOR FOR THE SHOULDER IS TOO FAR FORWARD TO SECURE THE BELT AGAINST THE REAR PASSENGER WHICH WOULD LEAD TO INJURY IN THE EVENT OF A COLLISION. WE HOPE THIS COULD BE REMEDIED IN FUTURE MODELS OR POSSIBLY CORRECT FOR CURRENT MODELS ON THE ROAD. WE FEEL INSECURE ABOUT LETTING OUR CHILDREN IN THEIR BUSTER SEATS RIDE IN THE THIRD-ROW OR EVEN ADULTS WHEN WE HAVE A FULL CAR. THE CONTACT HAD TO SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE FOR A FEW MOMENTS IN ORDER FOR THE VEHICLE TO BEGIN TO PERFORM NORMALLY. THE DEALER ATTEMPTED TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE BUT WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE. DEALERSHIP WAS UNABLE TO OBSERVE THE PROBLEM AND THEREFORE UNABLE TO FIX IT. IN ADDITION, THE ENGINE INTERMITTENLY LOSES POWER FOR ABOUT 1 SECOND WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH. THIS HAPPENS ABOUT 4-5 TIME PER WEEK, NEVER MORE THAN ONCE ON THE SAME DAY. IT USUALLY HAPPENS WITHIN THE FIRST 1/2 MILE OF DRIVING THE CAR. 2007 MAZDA5 EXCESSIVE TIRE WEAR AND ALIGNMENT/STEERING ISSUES @ 27K MILES. HAVE HAD APPROX. 10 ALIGNMENTS INCLUDING A SUBFRAME ALIGNMENT WITH NO SUCCESS. IT IS NOT REASONABLE THAT ROTORS MUST BE TURNED AT ABOUT 17000 MILES, I HAVE SEEN ON THE WEB THE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT SIMILAR SITUATION. AT A LITTLE OVER 9,000 MILES THE CAR BEGAN TO HESITATE AND WE RETURNED TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE FIRST SERVICE TO "FIX" THE PROBLEM. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 MAZDA, MAZDA5 EQUIPPED WITH YOKOHAMA AVID ENVIGOR TIRES, TIRE SIZE P205/50/17. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE CONTACT ENCOUNTERED A POTHOLE AND HEARD A LOUD BANGING SOUNDED OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE STEERING WHEEL BEGAN TO VIBRATE AND THE CONTACT MANEUVERED THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE FRONT AND REAR PASSENGER SIDE TIRES EXHIBITED SUBSTANTIAL TREAD SEPARATION AND CAUSED THE TIRES TO COMPLETELY DEFLATE. (5/2010) AT MY LOCAL MAZDA DEALER DURING ROUTINE ROTATION MAINTENANCE OF MY TIRES I OBSERVED UNUSUAL WARE ON THE INNER AREAS OF THE TIRE TREAD AREAS AND A GROVE CARVED ON THE INNER SIDES OF THE TIRES. THE GROVE WAS EXPOSING AREAS OF THE STEEL BELT OF THE TIRES. THE FIRST RECOMMENDATION FROM MAZDA WAS TO REPLACE THE TIRES, SOON. AFTER SPEAKING WITH THE MAZDA SERVICE REP HE INFORMED ME THAT THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN KNOWN TO OCCUR IN MAZDA 3'S AND THAT MAZDA CAME OUT WITH A LONGER UPPER CONTROL ARM TO HELP CORRECT THE ALIGNMENT ISSUE WITH THE TIRES. THE MAZDA DEALER INQUIRED AND FOUND NO RECALLS OR BULLETINS WITH THE MAZDA 5 THAT COULD HELP ME PAY FOR THE NEW, LONGER UPPER CONTROL ARMS FOR THE REAR OF MY CAR. THEY DID FIND EVIDENCE THAT SUPPORTED THIS ALIGNMENT ISSUE WITH MAZDA 3'S. MY COST TO REPLACE THE UPPER CONTROL ARMS IN THE REAR OF THE CAR WOULD BE APPROXIMATELY $400. AT THAT TIME I PAID TO HAVE MY VEHICLES TIRES REALIGNED AT THE MAZDA DEALER & PURCHASED 4 NEW BRIDGESTONE TIRES FROM A REPUTABLE TIRE GARAGE 2 WEEKS LATER. (12/2010) SIX MONTHS LATER THE SAME WEARING OF THE TIRES WAS NOTICED DURING ROUTINE ROTATION MAINTENANCE OF MY TIRES. THE MAZDA DEALER AGAIN RECOMMENDED THAT I PURCHASE THE LONGER UPPER CONTROL ARMS TO SEE IF THAT CORRECTS THE ISSUE. (1/2011) I THEN CONTACTED MAZDA CORPORATE. THEY WERE SYMPATHETIC AND AGREED THAT THIS ISSUE WAS NOT AN ANOMALY; HOWEVER, THEY WERE UNABLE TO ASSIST ME. PURCHASED A USED 07 MAZDA 5 WITH 37K FROM A HONDA DEALERSHIP. WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PRIVATELY OWNED. ABOUT 100 MILES AFTER PURCHASE THE OIL FILTER HOUSING, JUST STARTED SPEWING OIL. ANOTHER 500 MILES LATER, A CRUNCHING NOISE BEGAN TO APPEAR IN THE REAR END AND THE CAR WAS CONSISTENTLY STEERING TO THE RIGHT. TOOK IT TO A MAZDA DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR AND HAD THE REAR SHOCKS REPLACED STATED THEY ISSUE WAS THEY WERE LEAKING. THE ALSO MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS A RENTAL VEHICLE OWNED BY ENTERPRISE, BUT THIS WAS NOT DISCLOSED AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE. AT THE SAME TIME TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS FLUSHED. RECEIVED VEHICLE AFTER REPAIRS, DROVE ANOTHER 200 MILES, TRANSMISSION STARTED SLIPPING WHEN SHIFTING FROM 2ND TO 3RD GEAR. THE REAR END ALSO STARTED MAKING THE SAME NOISE. AFTER JUST 24,000 MILES, I HAD TO REPLACE THE TIRES ON MY 2007 MAZDA5 DUE TO "CUPPING." WITH JUST 5,000 MILES ON THE NEW TIRES, THE SAME THING IS HAPPENING AGAIN. WHEN I CONTACTED MAZDA REGARDING THIS, I WAS TOLD IT WAS A "DESIGN FLAW" , AND THAT IF I DIDN'T LIKE THE NOISE AND THE VIBRATION FROM THE TIRES, THEN I WOULD JUST HAVE TO REPLACE THEM FREQUENTLY. I PURCHASED A 2007 MAZDA 5. THIS IS A DECENT CAR BUT AT COLDER TEMPERATURES THE VEHICLE WILL STALL AND SHUTTER ABOUT 1-3 MINUTES AFTER START UP. THE COLDER IT GETS AND THE MORE MILES THAT THE CAR GETS ON IT THE MORE OFTEN THIS OCCURS. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE AND THAT MAZDA HAS TOLD THEM TO FLASH AGAIN THE COMPUTER. THAT WAS DONE AND DID NOT FIX THE ISSUE. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS IF I PULL OUT IN TRAFFIC AND THIS VEHICLE FAILS I AM HAULING MYSELF AND MY HUSBAND AND 4 KIDS THAT IS GOING TO BE SOMETHING THAT IS MAZDA'S FAULT FOR NOT REMEDYING THE SITUATION. THIS NOW OCCURS AFTER DRIVING AND COMING TO A SLOW OR A STOP. ALSO WHEN THE TEMPERATURES ARE FROM 35-40 DEGREES THE FRONT RIGHT WHEEL MAKES AN AWFUL NOISE SOMETIMES SQUEAKING AND THEN SOMETIMES A GRINDING NOISE. THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME THAT IT IS "HEAVY, AND EXCESSIVE GREASE IN THE BALL JOINT". NOW THAT THE TEMPERATURE IS WARMER YOU CANNOT HEAR THIS ANYMORE. THE VEHICLE HAS 13,000 MILES AND WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT 60-65 MPH AND YOU PUT ON THE BRAKES THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES AND ACTS AS IF THE BRAKES ARE WARPED. WHEN THE TEMPERATURE IS HOT OUTSIDE THE A/C WORKS POORLY WITH A TEMP OUT OF THE VENTS AT 47 DEGREES. WHEN STOPPING AT A DRIVE THROUGH RESTURANT OR AT THE BANK THE SMELL OF BURNING ANTIFREEZE IS VERY NOTICABLE. THERE IS NO VISABLE LEAKS BUT THE SMELL OF ANTIFREEZE IS EVIDENT. THIS IS A POOR DESIGNED, OVERPRICED, NOT ADVERTISED VEHICLE THAT MAZDA SHOULD WORK OUT THE BUGS IN, OR GIVE THE MONEY BACK TO THE CUSTOMERS. THIS CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP 7 TIMES SINCE NEW FOR THESE ISSUES THAT MAZDA SAID THEY DONT KNOW HOW TO FIX YET.
