How to read a Mazda CX-9 VIN — every digit explained
Every Mazda CX-9 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Mazda and the country it was built in.
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this CX-9.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your CX-9 VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

What's wrong. Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2007-2012 CX-7, CX-9, and 2009-2012 Maza6 vehicles. These vehicles had their passenger frontal air bag inflators previously replaced under a prior recall using inflators of the same design. The inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
Risk. An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
Fix. Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been performed. Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with an alternate one, free of charge. The recall began December 3, 2019. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, option 4. Mazda's number for this recall is 1317F. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 16V356 and 17V012.

Brake pedal would not depress. Car hit another vehicle that was stopped and it hit another vehicle. The mazda never even slowed before hitting the stopped vehicle. My wife was driving and she has had this issue before but it was intermittent and we could not get it to act up to bring it to the dealer. The 3rd car involved i do not have a status of. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
My wife has a cold. She picked it up during several uncomfortable hours in the emergency room. Our driveway is on a bit of a slope. She stopped the car, put it in park (she thought), turned off the engine, and got out. Something in the dashboard compartment had blocked the shift lever and the car was actually in reverse. It started rolling backwards down the driveway. She grabbed it and tugged with all her might and actually succeeded in stopping it when it got to the street. She managed to prevent our car from rolling into our neighbor's parallel parked car immediately across from our driveway. She also managed to hurt her arm quite badly. X-rays and CAT scans and exposure to every sniffling, coughing person in the ER later, and we learned she was lucky and did not break any bones, just sprained her elbow and shoulder. Very very lucky that she didn't get knocked under the wheel by the still open door of the car! My question is this: Can automakers create a safety device to prevent this? If the engine is off and the car is not in park, and no driver is detected in the driver's seat, can they automatically apply the brake? There could be a button or switch to undo the brake for towing. It seems the technology to do this has been around for decades, but the X-ray tech, the ER admissions nurse, my wife's orthopedist, even the lady at our insurance company all had stories of similar happenings. How can such a safety device become standard?
I'm constantly have a front windshield error : causing my vehicle to just automatically stoping while driving on the freeway and streets. My air bags didn't deploy when i was i a accident . I've taken it to the dealer 3 times already and they always have a different excuse or reason
Lost control of vehicle coming down a ramp in a parking garage, causing me to strike pole in garage, or would have careened over 6th fl railing down 6 stories to street. Vehicle in motion.
The driver side airbag did not deploy in a front end collision on the drivers side. When approaching a vehicle that had come to a sudden and complete stop, the brakes were applied hard to the Mazda CX-9 in order to stop, but after about 1 second they just totally let go and there was no braking at all and the Mazda continued to move forward until it slammed into the vehicle that was stopped. The MyMazda app sent a message that stated that there was a Brake System Malfunctiom which is exactly what occurred and caused the accident.
As i was driving downhill with minimal snow on the ground, i tapped my brakes about 7 times before they locked up. I went to turn to stay on the road and the steering wheel wouldn't budge causing me to go off the road, into an embankment. Vehicle was going about 5-10mph when this occured on a city street.
Emergency parking brake ('epb') began to malfunction following recall to fix electrical components on mazda cx-9, 2018. Epb will not release, or will unexpectedly and suddenly release with car accelerating in gear ('drive' or 'reverse'). Most recently when activating the emergency parking brake ((car was on a a roadway incline) the brake would not release, after 2 hours of being stranded and of attempting to get the brake to release, ( including rocking/shifting/alternating gears/braking/seat belt on/seat belt off/ manual brake on/off and following all manual procedures repetitively) a cell phone call to the mazda service manager who suggested rocking the car back and forth between gears ) the emergency parking brake suddenly and unexpectedly 'released', sending the car lurching forward and requiring driver to slam on brakes to avoid driving over a cliff). Vehicle epb inspection requested, mazda service manager stated the epb is, 'no longer necessary for vehicle safety', blamed the malfunction on 'bread crumbs' , offered to replace a defective console switch (presumably with another new, but also defective, switch) but refused to inspect the mechanical/operational aspects of the automatic emergency parking brake system (for abnormal rust, water leaks, defective cables, defective electrical wiring, etc.). Mazda uses the same manufacturer of epb for all mazda cx series vehicles. Federal nhsa recalls for epb malfunctions were mandated for all mazda cx series vehicles - except the mazda cx 9. The cx 9 uses the same epb system as do the other mazda cx series models. It stands to reason that the braking issues for other mazda recalls is the same reason why the cx 9 should have recalls to fix the automatic emergency parking brake system. Please issue a recall for mazda cx 9 vehicles to fix the automatic emergency parking brake defect(s). Thank you.
This is a mazda cx9 2014 awd. I needed to stop quickly on a city street in moderate traffic at 3:00pm. I was traveling about 25 mpr north in the inside lane on a dry road. I pushed down on the brake pedal hard and the car did not slow down but, continued on until it impacted with the car in front. The air bag did not deploy and there were no physical injuries to drivers of either involved vehicles. The damage to my car is estimated to be over $2000.00 dollars. I had previously taken this car in to the mazda dealer here in temecula, ca last month because the brakes had been non-responsive but, service dept. Said brakes tested normal. This car only has 11,000 miles on it. I am now scared to drive it as i am 64 years old with no tickets or accidents ever. It is currently at the "auto center auto body" shop being repaired through aaa ins.here in temecula.
A truck swerved into my lane and i tried to brake. The pedal didn't immediately depress so i had to serve. Jumped a curb and hit a sign. More than $11,000 of damage. The brake is very difficult to depress quickly.
I was driving along the highway and traffic began to slow. I pushed the brakes and the car did not stop.

Immediately upon making a sharp right turn into a parking spot, the car suddenly accelerated at a very fast pace without me pushing the gas pedal. My immediate reaction was to press on the brake, but it did not stop. The car slammed into a planter in front of me. The car moved so quickly that it was lodged into the bushes and had to be pulled out by a tow truck. I immediately called the dealer service department and told them what happened. The service manager's immediate reaction was to scoff at the idea that the car accelerated on it's own. My husband met me at the dealer and had subsequently found information about a recall of cx-9 models from 2012 for a similar malfunction. He showed it to the same manager who immediately knew the issue of the recall but was quick to mention it was the 2012 model, not the 2016. The dealer kept the car for a few days and told me it was driven twice and also some info from the computer was reviewed with mazda tech support person. No data indicating any kind of malfunction in the car and the service guy did not have a problem with it in two short test drives, so they said come pick it up it's safe to drive. However, i will never drive this car again. This is the fully-loaded signature cx-9 that they feature in all their ads. I loved this car at first sight and drove it over 24000 miles in less than 2 years. This experience scared me to the point that i will never drive this or another mazda again. I have had over a week to process this experience and am just happy my kids weren't in the car or that i didn't hit someone. I have found several other instances of sudden unintended acceleration online and cannot believe that this happens in 2017. I hope that this documentation helps someone else in my shoes feel that they are not crazy and this does happen. Shame on mazda for not fully addressing this issue.
I had an incident yesterday resulting in a minor collision. My accelerator stuck, my engine kept revving, and i could not stop. I kept applying the brakes but it felt as if everything locked up. I rearended the person in front of me no damage to their car and only minor to mine. I am now afraid to drive the vehicle. My husband contacted the dealership and they are waiting to hear back from mazda corporate. *tr

While driving on interstate 77, north bound, at 55mph, other motorists informed me that my car was on fire underneath. There were no dashboard warning lights or signals that came on it light up as a warning sign. I pulled over to the side of the road, the fire department and sheriff's office put out the fire and the car was towed. The car is quite new and with very low mileage. Well maintained car. No recent work other than regular oil change. Mazda denies any problems with this car. *tr
Car loses oil and coolant rapidly
The contact owns a 2021 Mazda CX-9. The contact stated that while accelerating quickly and entering the highway, there was no motive power to the vehicle. While crossing the highway in the right lane, driving at 65 MPH, the vehicle in front moved over; there was a parked vehicle. The contact was able to stop the vehicle before causing a crash. The driver was starting to accelerate, but there was no motive power when the accelerator pedal was depressed. The smart brake system malfunction message was displayed. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact called the local dealer, who scheduled an appointment. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact to have the vehicle diagnosed. The failure mileage was approximately 53,186.
Consumes over 2 quarts of oil between recommended oil changes. The dealer made excuses about needing to use a different oil but it has not improved the problem. The warning light for low oil went off after less than 3000 miles. It was 2 quarts down.
I just purchased this vehicle 2 months ago. Yesterday my oil light came on, I pulled over and checked the oil it was completely low. I had to put a quart of oil in it. After that I did some research and learned this seems to be an issue with some 2021 models the cx9 included. There needs to be a recall on this and Mazda needs to fix this issue. These cars cost way to much to have to put a quart of oil every month.
Oil light came on, vehicle has ~15,000 miles.
the vehicles experience excessive oil consumption because the defective valve stem seals allow engine oil to leak into the combustion chambers. This concern usually occurs when the mileage reaches approximately 2,000 – 3,000 miles (5,000 - 7,500km) and may also occur again after replacing or topping off the engine oil.

I was in a parking lot and came to a stop and placed the car in reverse to back into a parking space. The back-up camera was on and I began to back into the parking space when the car suddenly lurched/jerked forward and accelerated on its own. The car jumped the parking lot median strip and I hit a tree head on. I had my seatbelt on and the airbag deployed. The car then reversed back off the median into the parking lot. I turned off the car. Insurance company will have it inspected. The vehicle is a total loss. I was injured with a large lower abdomen hematoma and airbag burns on arms, wrists, and chest as well as various bruising. I was fortunate to have not hit pedestrians who were walking in the lot or other vehicles that were parked in the lot. There were no warning lights, messages, sounds. The brake assist did not engage. It was frightening.
Driver stopped vehicle in a driveway with minimal slope, shifted the vehicle in park, turned off the vehicle and exited. Driver proceeded to rear passenger door to retrieve 1 year old from car seat. After retrieving child from car seat, driver felt rear passenger door pushing into her leg, back and head. Vehicle proceeds to roll out of the driveway backward while in park. Driver and child escape vehicle's rear passenger side door, which is pushing them along in the vehicle's path toward residential street. Vehicle continues rolling in park backward down residential street, through a 3-way stop intersection, up a curb, through a yard and into a bush on a private property. A witness who helped retrieve the vehicle on behalf of the driver noted the vehicle was still in park when he tried to remove it from the bush. No one was severely injured but driver has sustained bruising on leg and severe emotional distress.
We were on a city road uphill and driving to a friends home. Our mazda cx-9 grand touring made a rattling noise, released a lot of white smoke, and lost acceleration. I immediately pulled the car on the shoulder and a by passer stopped his car on opposite shoulder and analyzed the situation and shouted move your family out and move from the car since its on fire underneath. We immediately moved out and by passer called 911. All the time while we waited and fire department arrived the car was dripping fire.
I was driving down the interstate and my mazda cx9 caught fire! I didn't realize it since it was under the car and the car beside informed me of it. This was due to the transfer case issues that mazda had to extend the warranty on them because of so many issues with them. They are covered for 90 thousand miles or 7 years. My transfer case was already replaced once and do to issues and now since my car is past the 7 years but only has 60 thousand miles they will not pay for it. Even though the transfer case they replaced a few years ago should still be under warranty. This situation could of been a lot worse and thank goodness my children were not in the car with me.
I've purchased 2012 mazda cx-9 awd it late november of 2011.recently i've been experiencing multiple unexpected loss of power-assisted brakes failure incident .i was in a minor fender bendeer. Thank god the driver infront was very nice and didnt file any claim against my insurance. When i brought my vehicle into mazda services department to get it resolve. Instead of taking unexpected loss of power-assisted brakes as an urgent matter. They told me that my car is drivable and it still break. I can drive my mazda in the meanwhile, until they have an open appointment for my mazda to be seen. After speaking to multiple personel at the services department. They were able to take my mazda and fixed the unexpected loss of power-assisted brakes. Now im experiencing speed control and power train. I was at a stop light and my mazda stalled in the middle of a left turning lane, in addtion to the stall incident, i was also experiencing the traction control light came on and the tire pressure monitor light began to flash. It felt like car had downshifted a couple of gears. I lost forward power in all gears. My sons and i came close to multiple rear-ended incident because of the mechanical issue of our mazda cx9. I was driving on a street with a 25 mph speed limit when all of a sudden the car hesitated and made some weird noises. I continued to pull over to get out of the way when there was a huge bang and the car came to an sudden stop. I was able to get to the side of the road. Smoke was coming out of the engine area and the car smelled terrible. I jumped out, got my dog out and called 911. The fire department and police came. Found metal parts all over the road. Smoke was mainly due to oil that was all over the engine and bottom of car. Right now the initial diagnosis is that the transfer casing blew along with a variety of other parts. Thank goodness i was not on the freeway. Additionally, i was lucky that the large parts that blew off the car did not put a hole in the bottom of my car or damage someone else's car. *tr

The contact owns a 2012 Mazda CX9. The contact stated that the vehicle had previously been involved in a crash due to a fractured passenger's side lower control arm. The dealer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the vehicle had been repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V451000 (Suspension). The dealer referred the contact to the manufacturer for assistance. An independent mechanic replaced the passenger's side lower control arm; however, the contact stated that after the repair was performed, the engine rattled and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was then taken back to the independent mechanic, who determined that the driver's side lower control arm spacers were missing and that the front and rear axles, brakes, and rear shocks needed to be replaced. Additionally, the cage bolts needed to be retightened. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.
Lost control brakes failing and steering and wheel lc about to fall off dealerships saying recall was completed but it's definitely not
On tuesday may 31, 2016 i took my mazda cx9 to mazda dealership for the recall, reference ##15v451000. I told the service representative that i was glad to be bringing the car in as it was making noises in the driver front and that the steering seemed loose. I was told that my car was inspected, did not require the recall and that all suspension parts were in good working order. On sunday, june 5, 2016 while entering the highway while driving my 2 children and elderly mother, my ball joint and lower control arm broke causing an accident on the highway on ramp. I was informed by police that i was lucky this had not occurred moments later (at high speed) as it was likely to have caused a severe or possibly fatal accident. The car was not drive able and required me tow my vehicle and find alternative transportation.
Tl* the contact owned a 2008 mazda cx-9. While driving at various speeds, the contact lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle jumped a curb and struck a tree. There were no injuries and a police report was not filed. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to an independent mechanic. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v451000 (suspension) after the failure occurred. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
While driving vehicle on road at approximatley 20 mph the wheel detached from the axle on the front passenger side of the vehicle resulting in damage to the vehicle.
While driving went to make right turn to have car serviced for unknown clicking when i would only make right turns. When turning into parking lot i heard a loud bang and auto was immobile at that point. I exited and found left front tire turned sideways. I had various damage to left front wheel area having to replace ball joint, lower control arm, bent axle and rim damage. I was also inform from irwin mazda that right ball joint had issues and i also had that replaced.
Was driving my car with children in it when the wheel fell off and axel cracked. It caused front end damage i couldn't get out of the driver side door because it wouldn't open. Had to pay to get all of that fixed. I just receive recall 8515g. My issue with this is that the recall does not correct the issue. The reason for the recall is that water get leak into the suspension and cause corrosion. Replacing just the control arms and ball joints does not prevent this from happening again. Water can still leak into the suspension and the new parts could could corrode, become loose and cause the same thing to happen again but this time it could result in more dire consequences. We were lucky i was traveling at a low rate of speed the first time it happened. This is forcing us to buy a new car when we still owe $8000 on the mazdaz we want to be reimbursed for this and the accident we had and the risk it out the lives of me and my children in. Furthermore mazda said there is a shortage of parts which means they won't replace if there is no sign of looseness. This is rediculous as my crash occurred a few months after being inspected. They are endangering lives
On november 5, 2014 i had an accident in my mazda cx-9. The left front tire broke free from the car while i was entering the highway on an on-ramp. I was going about 50-55 mph and about to merge into the first highway lane when the left front ball joint failed without warning and resulted in thousands of dollars in damage to my car. An insurance claim was files and the damage was repaired. I could have dies since i lost control of the car while entering the highway. Thankfully there were no other vehicles coming at the moment. I have pictures and insurance documentation.
The contact owns a 2021 Mazda CX-9. The contact stated while driving at various speeds and turning, there was a popping sound coming from the front end of the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The local dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 68,811.

The contact owns a 2022 Mazda CX-9. The contact stated that the vehicle was being operated with the front driver's side seat warmer activated to the highest heat level. After driving for several hours, the vehicle was parked. While exiting the vehicle, the contact experienced pain in the rear thigh area of each leg. Upon inspect the contact discovered that the rear thigh area of both legs had sustained burning and blistering despite having pants on as a barrier during the failure. During the injuries, the contact was wearing pants. The contact was later treated at the local urgent care center for first-degree burns and blistering caused by excessive heat from the seat warmer. The manufacturer was notified of the injuries and advised to have the vehicle examined by the local dealer. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who was unable to detect a failure in the operation of the seat warmer, and no problem was found. The contact inquired about the temperature of the seat warmer and what its highest temperature level is; however, that information was not provided, and the manufacturer stated that it is the temperature at which the occupant felt comforable with. No further information was available. The failure mileage was 53,000.

Neither the contact nor the passenger sustained any injuries. The cause of the fire was not determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 65,000.
*tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 mazda cx9. While driving 55 mph, a burning wire odor emitted in and outside the rear of the vehicle. The contact noticed that the rear windshield wiper motor was burning. The contact disconnected the motor for the windshield wipers. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 180,000.
Starting [XXX], through [XXX], we began receiving multiple "Critical Vehicle Malfunction" alerts (46 alert messages)via the Mazda app, including "Parking Brake Malfunction" and "Electric Parking Brake Malfunction." During this time, the vehicle experienced delayed starts and eventually required a jump-start. We brought it to the dealership multiple times to show the messages, before our 3-year/36,000-mile B2B warranty expired, but the issues were dismissed until the battery was finally replaced. At just over 36,000 miles (currently 39,646), a new issue emerged a “thud” sound from the steering wheel. The dealer diagnosed it as a failed u-joint shaft, which was deemed non-serviceable and not covered under warranty. I inquired about potential causes or prevention—no clear answer was known. I found relevant NHTSA TSBs (06-001/20 & 06-001/24) related to steering issues and escalated to Mazda USA. Mazda agreed to cover 50% as a goodwill gesture, leaving me to pay about $500. Two weeks later, the part arrived and was installed—but it did not fix the issue. The dealership now says it’s a failed bearing within the Electric Power Steering (EPS) unit, which requires complete replacement at a cost of over $2,000. Only one part is available in the U.S., with another two-week wait. The original (misdiagnosed) part was already sent back to Mazda. My out-of-pocket cost is now $1,151 and rising. Given the early warning alerts, misdiagnoses, and the fact that EPS controls several safety-critical functions (steering, cruise, lane assist, etc.), I believe this is a fundamental system failure that should be fully covered under warranty or as a safety-related goodwill repair. I respectfully request that Mazda assume full financial responsibility for the replacement and any related work. Thank you for your consideration. The oil light keeps coming on before your initial oil change. Also, the oil is actually low. They have already changed it and I'm having the same problem in less than 2 months.

Lost control brakes failing and steering and wheel lc about to fall off dealerships saying recall was completed but it's definitely not
Was driving my car with children in it when the wheel fell off and axel cracked.

My 2019 Mazda CX9 when you turn the steering wheel it makes a clicking noise. I brought car to a mechanic and was told there is a loose bolt in steering column. Mazda has a TSB bulletin on this issue TSB# 06-001/24 dated 01/23/2024. When I brought car to Palisades Mazda two other customers on line with me have the same issue. I looked on internet and found alot of people are having the same issue. Mazda is aware of this problem and it is a defect. Mazda is fixing this problem for cars under warranty but charging customers past warranty to replace the complete steering column to fix a loose bolt,
Tl* the contact owns a 2019 mazda cx-9. While driving in reverse in order to parallel park the vehicle, the front axle fractured and caused the front driver's side tire to bend inwardly. The vehicle was towed to garden city mazda (located at 209 north franklin st, hempstead, ny 11550, 516-292-7827) where it was diagnosed that the tie rod failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and provided case number: 1/239794329. The approximate failure mileage was 10,600.
Steering makes knocking noises when turning. It happened suddenly with no damage to car to cause it. It was fine prior to parking, when the car was restarted and the wheel was turned knocking noise started. Mechanic found there is a tsb for this problem but no recall.

Lost control brakes failing and steering and wheel lc about to fall off dealerships saying recall was completed but it's definitely not
While driving vehicle on road at approximatley 20 mph the wheel detached from the axle on the front passenger side of the vehicle resulting in damage to the vehicle.
I was driving approximately 75-80 mph (speed limit for I-90 is 80 mph) on I-90 Eastbound in South Dakota (approximately 5-8 miles from Sioux Falls, SD) in the left-hand lane (passing lane with a minimal shoulder) when I heard a terrible noise that sounded like I had a flat tire and the car began to pull to the left. I immediately slowed down and steered the vehicle onto the small shoulder on the left-hand side of the interstate. It was at this point I looked out my window (driver's window) and saw the entire left front wheel (not just the rubber tire) rolling by (west in the grassy median of I-90). The vehicle did not roll over, hit another vehicle, or get hit by another vehicle. After coming to a safe stop, I got out of the vehicle and saw that the left front (driver's side) wheel (not just the rubber tire) was gone. There were two (2) other passengers in the vehicle at the time that the wheel fell off who exited the vehicle out of danger of passing cars/trucks/semi tractor trailers on I-90. The vehicle was towed and to my knowledge has not been inspected by the manufacturer. The Hertz rental vehicle was only "inspected" by PurCo claims specialist via pictures as they did not have the vehicle in their possession. There were no warning messages, lamps, lights, or other symptoms prior to the wheel falling off. The wheel fell off on 7/8/2023 on Interstate 90 in South Dakota. After the wheel fell off, it rolled down the median of I-90 bounced up onto the westbound lane of I-90 and struck another vehicle causing that vehicle's airbags to deploy. There were four (4) occupants in that vehicle.
I bought a used 2017 mazda cx-9 from west shore honda in tampa in july of 2020. They screwed me financially and i'll handle that separately. There has been an ongoing issue since the first few days after buying the car. I've complained multiple times via email and phone. I've been trying the service department countless times. They keep stating it's a tire issue. To the point they have replaced the tires 3 times. After the second time i had already decided it's not tires. The car has a very rough ride when i'm motion. Once you got 80 it wobbles. After several weeks the wobble can be felt at lower speeds of 55/60. The check engine light comes on but i'm told there's no codes when they diagnostic the reading. I've expressed that when i pull into my garage within 30 seconds to a minute there's a loud pop it's when the car is not in motion when it's been parked and turned off is when i noticed it. I brought it to my personal mechanic just to look at and drive and he's pretty certain it's a powertrain bearing or something of those sorts. Brought it back to westshore and they put another set of tires on it. This is been going on now for 9 months and after doing research online and some of the nhtsa ids this is a problem and i do not feel safe. And it needs to be handled the amount of complaints in times that i visited that dealership to fix this problem and all they do is put new tires on it is asinine. I have tons of documentation the same documentation that's at the dealership i do everything via email for that reason.
Body paint is very thin and is chipping. Wheels coating is peeling off and chipping. And the seat heaters are very hot, almost burning even on the lowest setting.
The vehicle has tire pressure monitoring system malfunction warnings and parking brake malfunction warnings even after taking to dealership to be fixed. Was told it’s a known problem by Mazda, should be recalled, but there were not any current recalls for the issue.
Rear wheel trim partially detached from car while driving, safety risk of large plastic part being caught in rear wheel. Did not hit any debris but heard a loud noise as the part detached. Part is supposed to be held in place by 12 clips but multiple owners of Mazda CX-5 and CX-9 models report this problem. Mazda dealers deny there is a problem even when some new cars have only 3 clips installed. When I called Mazda USA to report, and asked them specifically for a federal government contact to report safety issues, they said calling them was the ONLY way to report an issue, which was not correct. Was told I would have to pay for the repair of this safety issue. See this website for the experience of other owners and a description of the problem: https://mazdas247.com/forum/t/2016-cx-9-wheel-well-trim-became-detached.123861160/ I also personally know another Mazda owner who had the same issue with the part falling off while driving.
I heard a pinging sound coming from one of the wheels. When i got out and looked, i discovered the wheels are beginning to flake and degrade. I contacted mazda customer service and was told i would have to cover the cost of replacement as the vehicle is out of warranty.
Vehicle had a loud grinding/growing sound took it to the dealer in october 2018 replaced right front wheel bearing, same issue took to dealer replaced left front wheel bearing in may 2019, same issue replaced left front wheel bearing again december of 2019, same issue replaced right rear wheel bearing march 2020
My vehicle seemed as if the transmission was slipping between gears on the highway it would take forever to switch into higher gears for higher speeds then when slowing down it would jerk and then finally stop or if i was in traffic where i didn't need to make a complete stop it would jerk to slow down and skip gears and jerk to speed back up while on the high way traveling at normal speed with cruise control set it went from 6th gear to 4th gear for no reason at all! Then it started making noises sounding like both the front and back end first you would only hear them when turning right or left then started hearing them in reverse then you heard them while driving all the time on the highway back roads and parking sounded as if my tires were going to fall off! I contacted carmax because that's where i purchased the car in march of 2017 it's now agust 2017 and told them what was happening they lied from the initial phone call but that's besides the point they had my vehicle for a week saying they were looking at it thoroughly to make sure what they found in the rear differential was the issue they assured me it was told me if i heard the noise bring it back asap as i was driving the vehicle home it was still experiencing the same issues we tried to call them immediately but they were closed we called them that monday and couldn't get anybody on the phone so we left a message we continue to call them for two weeks before they finally gave us an appointment to bring the car and i could not drive my car for the two weeks that i had it in my possession because i was told through my extended warrantee that driving my vehicle while it was still damaged would void my warranty the day after we drop my car off back at carmax i was called and told that the date it was pulled out of the garage on the original repair date 3 weeks prior that the tech noted to bring to mazda

Can a Mazda CX-9 tow? Towing & payload
As an SUV, the Mazda CX-9 is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package.
What sets your CX-9's tow & payload rating:
- Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
- Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
- Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
- Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.
Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
