How to read a Mazda CX-3 VIN — every digit explained
Every Mazda CX-3 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Mazda and the country it was built in.
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this CX-3.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your CX-3 VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

A recall notice dated July 14, 2023 stated improper design of rearview camera wiring harness fastener. The fastener may become damaged from vibrations during normal vehicle use and/or while closing the lift gate. I have been told by the dealership that they do not have the parts to remedy the issue and don't know when they will have the parts. It appears that the manufacturer has failed or is unable to remedy this safety recall in a timely manner since more than a year has passed since the recall notice was issued and they are unable to predict when the parts will be available. Recall Status: "Recall Incomplete, remedy not yet available" Manufacturer Recall Number: 6023G. NHTSA Recall Number: 23V-487.
The contact owns a 2019 Mazda CX-3. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power and was unable to accelerate above 20 MPH. The low oil pressure warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the electrical wiring harness, finding that the harness appeared to suffer from normal wear and tear. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 132,000.
The contact owns a 2019 Mazda CX3. The contact stated while turning off the vehicle, the engine did shut-off however, the interior electrical components of the vehicle such as the radio and the doors would not automatically lock intermittently. The contact took the vehicle to a local dealer who inspected the vehicle and could not duplicate the failure. The key fob battery was replaced to fix the issue however, the failure recurred with the push to start not operating as designed. The contact was concerned about a possible manufacturer network failure with the push to start function, key fob, or the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.
Battery has died twice for no reason. Locks need to be unlocked manually. I have to turn on car to open other doors.
While driving the vehicle entire dash lights go dark. This is the third episode i have experienced this. The vehicle has been to dealer twice before with same complaint. I contacted mazda in december 2018 & was given reference number of 1-1911536225. Incident happened again today when driving under overpass on highway
I purchased my 2019 cx 3 november 2018. April 17 2019 with 1840 miles i needed a new battery. I was told i didn't drive the care enough! I drive my car every day but it is local driving. February 25 2020 my car was serviced at 5000 miles including oil change and engine check. Paperwork showed battery at 100%. March 2 2020 another new battery was installed. I was told it was because of the "cold" (70 degrees) weather! I do not leave a/c or radio running when i exit the car. I would like to know if there is an electrical problem with my car or some other underlying problem. Will i have to replace the battery annually??? Both instances occurred when i turned the car on and all lights flashed, car did not want to go. Turned it off, restarted, check engine light came on. Thank you
Key fob disconnects while driving. Lock/unlock does not work. Car does not start when keyfob is in vehicle. This has happened three times now, the dealership has changed my keyfobs, flashed the memory, and replaced the batteries. I've spoken to corporate customer service and was told "sometimes key fobs just disconnect. Please exit the vehicle, wait, and try again." i'm currently waiting for this to happen a fourth time.
Tl* the contact owns a 2018 mazda cx-3. The contact stated while driving 52 mph, the blind spot detection warning indicator was not working. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to olympia mazda (2201 carriage southwest olympia, wa 98502) where the failure was diagnosed as a blind spot monitoring system failure. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired under manufacturer communications number: tsb:15-004-18-3539. The contact was upset that the tsb was not a recall. The manufacture was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 22,440.
While i was parking my car and braking the throttle opened wide and i jumped the curb. I reapplied the brakes hard and the car came to a stop after skidding 4 feet. (tire marks measured). I had the car towed to the dealer where they could find nothing wrong. In researching this problem it appears the electronic throttle system can at rare times have voltage problems that can cause this. My dealer could not replicate this but it has been done in a study by the korean national forensic service. Since all new cars have the same electronic throttle systems i am unable to buy a car that won't be vulnerable to this. I am currently still driving my car with. My hand on the gear handle to put the car in neutral if it happens again. As soon as auto makers admit that sudden unintended acceleration is caused by electrical problems with their cars i will buy a new car from the company who fixes this problem. In my research of this problem i found many other people with new cars all brands that this has happened too. I believe that human err could at times be a contributor to the problem but in my case i know my foot was on the brake when this happened. I love my new car and would not complain otherwise. Please look at dr. Ronald l. Belts research into this problem and his conclusions. Thank you
Fuel/propulsion System 16 Read
I have two issues. The front crash warning light goes on and off intermittently even when alone on the highway. This happens about once a month. The second issue is more serious. My car showed 40 miles of gas left in the tank, and ran out of gas. Fortunately I was in the right hand lane and there was a shoulder. Had this happed anyplace else I'd likely be dead. I took my car to the dealer where I bought it. they could not explain the problem and told me to assume it would never happen again (!). I contacted Mazda directly twice. The first time they took my info and did nothing. The second time they told me to take it to another dealership. I cannot tell that the issue has been reported anywhere so I'm reporting it here. Thank you.
I was told I have a recall on my fuel pump it can die at any time! Then they tell you they have no solution for fixing it so you're taking your life in your own hands going out of town having a car break down on you! How is that right I buy a new car thinking I can drive it safely and now I'm afraid to go anywhere and this isn't the first recall this car is had either!
Fuel injector failed without warning. A lot of fuel leaked into the engine destroying a spark plug in one cylinder and ultimately ruining the catalytic converter when fuel got into it. Independent mechanic and Mazda dealership diagnosed. Car cannot be driven.
The engine on my 2017 CX-3 died while travelling on the interstate at 70mph just before the low fuel light would normally turn on. I pulled to the side of the interstate freaked out at what just happened. I was within a mile of an exit with a gas station and the car started when fuel was added. It's the exact same low pressure fuel pump failure symptom that later CX-3's are being recalled for. I took it to a Mazda dealer and he only recommended that I keep the tank over half full. I've been hoping the recall would be expanded to include my VIN number but there doesn't appear to be enough complaints yet to do this. I've been filling up at 1/4 tank and haven't had an issue again after driving another 40,000+ miles. This model has disappointing range even without this issue.
On November 4, 2022 I was driving in the middle lane of I 87 north of Saratoga Springs. The car stalled and died. I was able to get to the break down lane. After sitting for 5 - 10 minutes, completely frazzled, I tried the ignition and the car started. The gas gauge said I had approximately ¼ tank left. I filled the car up and made it the rest of the way home. This had happened once before on a local road and we had the car towed. The thought was that maybe the car had run out of gas although the gas gauge did not so indicate. When I took the vehicle to the mazda dealer after considerable research, they indicated there were recalls on Denso fuel pump impellers for the model of my car in 2018 and following but not for my 2017 model. The date of that service was 1/17/23. There were no codes still in place that would identify the problem. I am certain that this is the problem. I only drive the car locally now and i keep the gas tank at least ½ full.
I was driving my 2017 Mazda CX-3 on the interstate when car suddenly jerked and failed to accelerate. I was driving 70 mph in the left lane when this happened and immediately started to pull over to the righthand shoulder of the road. The car jerked and slowed again when we were in the right lane. By the time I pulled off, the check engine light was on and the car had completely stalled. I was stuck on a narrow shoulder with a dog and two people in the car. We were lucky we made it to the shoulder at all before the car stalled. There was no indication before the car jerked that there was any problem with the vehicle. The car was towed to the dealership and the cause of the check engine light was identified as a leaking fuel pump/fuel rail. I had to have the fuel pump replaced along with a valve cover gasket.
Car has 24,547 miles and the fuel pump went out. Car stalled while driving and had to be towed by aaa. Car was repaired at overbeck auto service 1793 ohio pike, amelia, oh 45102. [email protected]
This is a fuel pump problem. P/n pell - 1335za. Other numbers on the label are 16.12.22 and h00073961. I am in possession of the faulty part. We were travelling at highway speed on route 1 in delaware. The car stalled in the middle lane and we almost made it to the shoulder. My husband, 70, had to push it the shoulder. It would not restart. We had my 95 year old mother in law in the car. The temperature was close to 100 degrees that day and sunny. We were very concerned for her. We called 911 and a state trouper came in about 20 mins. He took my husband to get a a few gallons of gas and the car started. Before the stall, we had enough gas for 39 miles. We did not run out of gas. This happened once before about six months earlier on a less busy road and i was able to restart it so i did not fret about it that time and thought it was just a quirky thing. We made it home without further incident. We brought it to the mechanic locally for replacement of the fuel pump. He verified the problem with his diagnostic equipment. The check engine code for the event was p0192. Total cost of repair was $900.00. There is a current fuel pump recall on mazdas but it starts with the model year 2018. Mine is a 2017 but the problem appears to be the same! The component is in my possession but no other parties, besides the mechanic, have examined it.
On 3 separate occasions this car presented as if it were out of fuel while the gas gauge showed it having fuel. It sputtered then lost power as if it ran out of gas. Two of these times were on the interstate while the 3rd time was in a residential area.
While driving 70 mph on the interstate, vehicle stalled and started jerking, unable to accelerate, losing speed quickly. Fortunately i was able to move onto the shoulder, avoiding a semi truck approaching quickly behind, and another semi trucked parked along the interstate blocking access to the shoulder.

Heavy condensation is occurring inside the driver side headlamp. A quick google search shows this is a common problem among Mazda owners and Mazda will not cover the repair. I am unable to get a Massachusetts state inspection sticker due to this.
Both headlamp lights have water on it (Condensation ocurring on both headlamps) Please verify if this situation could be considered a safety hazard.
The headlights have contained moisture for the last 4 years, causing diffused, dimmed visibility at night...very dangerous. Also, concerned that electrical may be affected eventually.... Mazda still will not recall and repair?? On fixed income, to pricey for me to repair!
I was recently served a notice in regards to our back up camera. Of greater concern is the moisture issue in the headlight that MAZDA seems to not be concerned about. However my inspection mechanic seems to be offended and warns it shan't pass PA inspection. Why won't Mazda deal with this defect? If you poll other owners the concern is not random. Many folks have paid hundreds of dollars for a replacement. As retired folks this is an obstacle due to very limited SS income. As a senior I have driven over 50 years WITHOUT a gadget showing me a picture. I use my mirrors as I was taught by the policeman instructor. However I was ALWAYS in need of my headlights! Seems obvious which should be priority. What help can your team offer this discouraged Mazda owner? [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Condensation in the headlights assembly. It’s a common problem. I have already drivers side front replaced at the dealer, now the passenger side front is showing lots of moisture inside the headlamp. Super dangerous as it defuses the light, limiting visibility in the dark. Mazda, please do something!!! This is ridiculous. I have attached a photo of the headlight that has water in it. The second attachment is the paperwork that came when they replaced the drivers side for the same issue under warranty.
The headlamps contain and hold moisture, although there are no cracks. This is causing moisture, and there is a concern that electrical problems may occur in the future.
The seals around headlights are failing and causing moisture infiltration. Limiting distance of visibility during night driving. I have found through forums that this is a common occurrence.
The headlamps contain and hold moisture causing a softer light and less visibility. I am afraid the moisture will cause electrical problems in the future.

The manufacturer was notified and did not assist. The vin was unknown. The failure mileage was 10,000. *tt *tr

I was in an accident at a very high speed. A driver didn't see me in his left side blind spot and was veering into my lane at 85-90mph. I swerved to the left to avoid the car and my car wouldn't straighten/i couldn't get back the control. I smashed the guardrail with the whole left side of my car and the car was deemed to be totaled by the insurance company. The airbags never deployed despite the high speed and impact of the accident.

The contact owns a 2018 Mazda CX-3. The contact stated that while driving, the vehicle was moving from left to right. The contact stated that the brakes were making an abnormal scraping sound. There was an abnormal sound coming from the engine. The local dealer was not contacted. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was unknown.
My recent experience with the service at Putnam Mazda was extremely disappointing and frustrating. What should have been a routine visit turned into a distressing ordeal. My car suddenly died on the freeway without warning lights, prompting me to bring it in for servicing. Initially, I appreciated being offered a loaner car. However, subsequent communication regarding the repair was inadequate and concerning. I received an email stating the necessary part wouldn't be available until July and was abruptly instructed to return the loaner car immediately, with no consideration for my circumstances. This lack of empathy was shocking, especially as a loyal Mazda customer. Furthermore, I experienced racial and gender profiling throughout the ordeal. Instead of addressing my concerns, I was met with aggression and threats of police involvement, making me feel targeted and discriminated against. When I questioned this response, I was told my email was "direct," justifying the aggression. Additionally, the loaner agreement lacked an expiration date. Despite being assured they would provide a grace period if needed, I was demanded to return the car immediately, with false claims about the agreement. This manipulation, gaslighting, and harassment are not only unethical but also against the law. To exacerbate matters, safety concerns with my vehicle were brushed aside. Despite my car having a non-working engine, the dealership suggested I drive it off the lot. This reckless recommendation not only endangered my safety but also the safety of others on the road. Despite repeatedly expressing these safety concerns, the dealership did nothing to address them. Responding to a concerned customer with threats of police involvement is never justified. Instead of addressing my concerns, I was met with aggression and threats. They threatened to report the car stolen and demanded I drive my car without a working engine. This behavior was unwarranted and left me feeling insulted and degrad
Engine stalled while driving and all the dashboard lights turned on. Could not turn engine back on again. Upon inspection, it was found that the fuel injector pump was faulty and was subsequently replaced by the dealership. Fast forward a year, check engine light came on and vehicle began to stall again. Dealership states that the fuel injector burnt out due to the initial fault in the fuel injector pump. Furthermore, it burnt out my catalyst.
Driving on interstate car lost power all warning lights went on then died coasted to side of road could not restart car had about 1/8 tank gas dot came and put in some more gas restarted went to gas station and oil change shop that could not find anything to repair reset warning lights
While driving on a 4-lane road (~45 mph), the vehicle lost all power and died. The check engine and battery warning lights came on and the start/stop button light turned red. After coasting into a gas station, the car could not initially be restarted. It could be restarted after adding gasoline, although the fuel tank was not empty when the car died. The fuel gauge showed 1/8 tank, and 9.3 gallons fuel could be added to the tank, which has a capacity of 11.9 gallons. After adding fuel and restarting, all warning lights went off and the car could be driven normally again. The mazda dealer found no stored error codes in the system and verified that the fuel pump and gas gauge were working correctly. Dealer performed powertrain control module software update.

Dec 7, 2023, I was driving on [XXX] in Gaston County and someone slammed my vehicle as I was driving safely and not fast. I was in the middle lane and barely saw the vehicle that slammed me pushing me to the left of the interstate. Officer Talley, J was there to help me: The report number is [XXX]. The vehicle was totally damaged and I am waiting for Progressive to complete the claim so I can get another vehicle. I am currently renting a vehicle from Enterprise for 28 days. All of the issues listed in Mazda Technical Service Bulletin 06-001/20, however this bulletin does not cover my model. Inspected by dealer, possible solution intended to be relubrication of the worm gear/worm shaft in the steering assembly. Issue presented itself in the last year and is most present while driving at high speeds, above 45 miles an hour.
The Mazda CX-30 2021 I purchased from Mastria Mazda in Raynham, Massachusetts has a steering problem that is a significant safety concern. The steering wheel has resistance that can most notably be felt at highway speeds (around 65 mph). When making small corrections to the steering wheel to stay in the lane the steering binds and then releases with further force ultimately resulting in overcorrections. The steering binds and then releases and is not fluid as any car should be. An apt analogy would be opening a new water bottle, when you twist the cap, you get resistance along the plastic perforations and with further force the cap releases and turns quickly. This is the best way I can describe the issue. This car is dangerous at highway speeds. An environment where a crash could be catastrophic. This issue needs to result in a recall immediately.
Having the exact same issue as was outlined and allegedly repaired in the prior service bulletin 06-001/20. Obviously this bulletin only applies to vehicles up to model year 2020. I have checked the model number on the steering motor to determine that it is the "updated" design. Obviously, the issue has not been addressed properly by Mazda.
Steering wheel gives resistance to movement, both left and right. This creates a safety hazard from oversteering.
The contact owns a 2019 Mazda CX-3. The contact stated while driving approximately 60 MPH, while making a lane adjustment to the left, the automated lane departure system overcorrected the steering to the right. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent however, the failure had begun to occur at slower speeds. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the steering shaft needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 29,056.
Steering Issue: Vehicle from purchase date had stiff steering. Figured this was just a new vehicle and it would get loose as it ages. As of one year later and 14K miles it has gotten worse. Especially at highway speeds the wheel gets "stuck" and breaking it free causes me to oversteer/overcompensate which gives the impression the vehicle is jerking left or right while in motion. Brought to the dealer who stated it's the steering column that will need to be replaced and the part has a six week backorder. Seat Issue: The passenger seat weight sensor alarms with zero weight on the seat.
Steering system seems to become unhinged. Something in the steering system is not working properly.

In early November 2022, a stress crack appeared on the left side of the front windshield. The crack was about 20 inches long, about halfway down the windshield, and impaired my view of the road. I took it to the dealership (Jeff Haas Mazda at 16711 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas) for inspection and they confirmed it was a stress crack from the pillar, not caused by an object hitting the windshield. They refused to replace the windshield at no cost. I called Mazda to file a complaint about and was told to file a claim with my insurance. I believe this is a defect with the vehicle and should be covered by the manufacturer.
Front windshield cracked from top of car nothing hit it looks like stress crack. Mazda says no and no problems with there windows. 5 weeks later and no one can get me windshield because 400 backorderd and mazda has hold on them.so i have a broken window on a new car that i cannot get fixed lucky som far no tickets. They know they have a problem but are keeping it a secret
Windshield wiper fluid tank leaks when you pour fluid in empty within about an hour
The headlamps contain and hold moisture causing a softer light and less visibility. I am afraid the moisture will cause electrical problems in the future.
While driving home around 35 mph on a straight road with no cars, no bumps in the asphalt, and no trees, my sunroof suddenly shattered. I took the car to the dealer this morning after researching on the internet and finding results of class action lawsuits from kia and nissan based on the same problem, as well as mazda forums with customers complaining of sunroofs suddenly shattering, yet i was told that because the glass is already broken there is no way to visually tell if there was an impact or if it was due to a defect, and the cost is on me. I want to note this with the nhtsa since the problem is not due to anything i've done or caused. My mileage is just over 16k, which is average for the problems online that i've found. A common complaint is that the sunroof tends to "bow up in the middle" which is exactly what happened with mine - the image included shows this. The glass missing from the image broke away as i was driving home.
The windshield wiper fluid only reaches the very bottom portion of the front windshield. I brought into the mazda dealership where purchased and was told my vehicle was operating similarly to other new cx-3's and according to design/manufacture. I advised them my windshield is not being cleaned as one would expect and is presenting a significant safety issue. I called mazda customer service and am not being helped.
Multiple water lines left on windshield after each swipe of the wipers during a light or heavy rainfall whether the vehicle was stationary or in motion. This problem initially occured in october, 2015, and continues to occur every time it rains!! This problem definitely affects visibility! My new cx-3 did receive new windshield wiper blades, but the same problem recurred! Apparently the wiper blades mazda is providing are defective!!

I was in a parking ramp, i rounded the corner going up and was pulling into a parking spot, my foot was on the break, and the car accelerated. I lurched forward into a wall of the ramp. It wasn't raining so pavement and ramp were not wet. The dealer has looked at the car, said they saw break and gas pedal active at the same time. They said nothing was wrong with the car.
I put my right signals on and came to a near stop, as I did a right turn into the parking space in front of the dry cleaners. I was slowly creeping into the parking space, and pushing the brakes, as I slowed down to a near stop in the parking spot. All of a sudden, as my right foot was still on the brakes, I felt the car lurch forward, and felt myself pulled back into my seat from the velocity, as the car suddenly accelerated forward out of control! I had NO CONTROL OVER THE CAR! I saw myself speeding towards the drycleaners’ glass window storefront! I came to a stop after I had driven over the sidewalk, over some plants, and crashed into the pillar in front of the dry cleaners, completely pulling it off of its foundation. My car’s engine was still running, and the airbags did NOT deploy. This was a case of Sudden Unintended Acceleration where the airbags did not deploy, resulting is serious property damage, but could have been much worse had the pillar not been there to stop my car from breaching the storefront, and potentially hitting a customer or employee.
I turned into a parking spot and was slowing down .everything seemed normal when suddenly the car sped up into a wooded area. The car shot into the trees. With my foot on the brake i tried to stop it but it just kept going. The car stopped when it hit a tree. I turned off the ignition and realized that my foot was on the brake and the gear shift was in park.
Rough starting, stalling while going to switch gears, hesitating when pressing gas.
LED speedometer in dash showing incorrect speed or unreadable. Advised of chip malfunction.
In the past 4 months of owning the vehicle i have had 4 episodes of unintended acceleration. Each time when slowing to a stop, the brake pedal was depressed, and suddenly the car lurched forward as the engine revved, and the brake was ineffective at stopping the car. Two of the episodes could have caused an accident without quick evasive action on my part. I have also had several episodes of the engine suddenly revving on start up (without depressing the gas pedal). *tr
