How to read a Mazda B-Series VIN — every digit explained
Every Mazda B-Series carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Mazda and the country it was built in (real Mazda codes below).
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this B-Series.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
- JapanJC1 · JC2 · JM1 · JM2 · JM3
- Mexico3MD · 3MV · 3MY · 3MZ
- USA7MM · 7MU
Digits 4–17 — the engine code (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard, identical on every car. For the full year-code table (2001–2026), country codes and where the VIN is stamped on your B-Series, see the complete guide to reading a VIN.

We were broadsided by a vehicle that ran a red light at full speed. The impact was on the passenger side. The car flipped over and skidded onthe passenger side then flipped back onto the drivers side and skidded before rolling over at least once. Not one air bag deployed. Thank god for the seat belts. They saved our lives. Injuries were concussions, sprained neck, injuries to lower neck, back and shoulder of passenger. We landed upside down, released our seat belts and crawled to safety with the help of police and fire. Our speed was about 25-30 miles /hour. Our car was totalled. The other driver was cited in the accident.
I was in an accident and i was hit from behind and my car went flying into the guard rail at about 35 miles per hour head on and my air bags did not deploy. I was sent to the hospital. *nm

Vehicle sustained extensive frontal damage at a impact estimated at 30-40mph that resulted in state farm insurance deeming the vehicle a total loss. My son was the driver of the vehicle and he received a broken nose and is going to require surgery and is having headaches . Neither of the airbags: driver or passenger did deploy!!! If any futher information regarding this is needed as to current location of vehicle etc. Please feel free to contact me at anytime. When i called mazda corporation by phone i was basically told that "they do not look into things like this". I am convienced if the airbags would have operated properly my son 's injuries would have been much less and may not have received any injury at all. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.*ak

I just had my tires checked at 10,000 miles during an oil change at my dealership. No problem was found. I now have 11,000 miles on my car and tires. My tires are michelin radial xse p215/50 r17. I was on my way to work and without warning my drivers side back tires blew out. It separated from the tire and the cords were showing. I am convinced that this is the fault of the michelin tire because of the tread wear and the miles on it. I did not hit anything in the road nor was the tire punctured. When the tire blew i was on west bound on i-70 to downtown indianapolis and without warning i spun around several times in the middle of i-70 and got into an accident and had to be taken to the hospital via ambulance for neck and back injuries. My mazda 6 recieved 6,000 dollars in damage that i know of so far not to mention the person that i crashed into. My insurance will not pay for the tire because that was the reason for the accident. I think michelin should pay for 4 new tires of a different brand, my hospital visit, my deductable and my rental care expense and my lost wages. Also my tire presure was checked by my dealer again the week of june 27,2005. I'm very lucky that i didn't get hurt worse or someone getting hurt. I still don't know the extent of my injuries because i'm still having a lot of pain since the accident happened on july 4, 2005. Is it any wonder that the f1 drivers didn't want to race and face an accident or worse yet death?
Tire tread separation on passenger rear side occurred on 8/28/09 in st. Augustine florida. The vehicle was a mazda b2300 (2001). The driver lost control of the vehicle, spun around 180 degrees on i95, went into the ditch & collided into the guardrail on the passenger side. The passenger suffered head wounds and four broken ribs & had to be transported to flagler hospital. The driver suffered no significant injuries. *tr

The dealer stated that there was impact damage to the spare tire and they would not repair or replace the tire. The contact took the tire to two different tire dealers and one stated the tire was old and the other stated that there was a defect in the tire casing. The manufacturer stated that they would replace the tire, however, the dealer was unable to find a replacement tire. As of august 14, 2007, the dealer has not replaced the tire. The current and failure mileages were 7,500. The consumer provided pictures of the defect and also a repair invoice. Updated 09/07/07 *tr

Brittle metal failure in rear axle caused a shear near the left rear tire. The left rear tire separated from the vehicle while the vehicle was on the highway at 50-55 mph, causing the vehicle to roll several times.
My 2003 mazda b3000 pickup spontaneously shifted from neutral into reverse and crashed the (driver's side) open door into the inside wall of my garage. The vehicle was idling and unoccupied, and the parking brake was not engaged. The force of the crash was enough to bend the door. I called the local police department, but was informed that they do not issue report numbers for minor losses incurred on private property. I am filing this report in view of the potential for serious bodily harm, death, or major property damage associated with a spontaneous shifting from neutral into a gear, so that the vehicle travels without any occupants, and poses the risk of crashing. *tr
Four wheel drive system engaged on it's own, causing severe left turns as front wheel locks up. Has happened three times, even thou fixed twice. While driving my mazda 2000 protege(automatic) home from friends on july 4 th, noticed that there was a big jerk from transmission and engine started rewing at ~4k to ~5k and the car was loosing power. I was doing 55 mph at the time and the speed came down to 40 mph. From that point on car would not go beyond 40 mph and engine still keeps rewing at that speed. I was on a highway in the car alone and was feared for life that the engine rewing with loud noice would blow on me. Had to take local roads to make it to home. The car has 37k miles on it and was gently driven. All the required maintenance work was performed. Dealer after performing the diagnostics came back with there was an internal failure with the transmission and it needs to be replaced costing over $2600.
Clutch shudders violently when attempting to engage. Is very pronounced on hills, inclines, and when attempting to engage clutch in an emergency situation, ie, need acceleration to pass, merged into traffic etc. As a result, the clutch will fail to engage properly and leave the driver and passengers in vulnerable position of not being able to move when expecting to. In addition, the car will roll back while on hills and get dangerously close to vehicles behind it since the clutch either engages resistantly or not at all. *ak

My wife was driving her new mazda 3 (5 dr hatchback) to work. She applied full throttle acceleration to pass a slow moving car. After completing the pass, and backing off of the accelerator, the car stayed at max throttle/rpm. She had to put the car in nuetral to slow down and after a few seconds of redline rpm, the throttle came down to idle. I drove the car a few days later and was able to duplicate the same problem. Subsequnetly, 2 dealers have been unable to duplicate the problem or isolate a failure. We are very leary of driving this car, and are fearful this will cause an accident if it happens again.*ak

Factory recall we were notified to have our cruise control on our 2002 mazda 4wd-b400 pu disconnected because of a factory recall. We did this in october 2007. To date we have heard nothing about the repairs. Our dealers keeps telling us that they are waiting for parts. Where in the world are these parts manufactured that they can't get them by now? Since then we are getting an "engine light on" which indicates that we either have a short circuit condition or the dpfe/egr valve pressure sensor has failed. I want to know if this is due to their disconnecting the cruise control? Please let me know soon! *tr

I contacted heritage mazda in towson md to have the recall fixed. After being transferred 4 different times, the service writer informed me that they could not get the harness to fix this issue and i would have to wait a few years. I contacted mazda corporate direct and was told by them that the part is available. I feel that heritage just didn't want to do the fix and would like someone to look into why they will not fix a recall item for my truck?
Tl* the contact owns a 2001 mazda b3000. While driving approximately 60 mph the contact noticed the accelerator pedal felt loose. After the accelerator pedal was engaged with force there was a popping sound and the pedal began to function normally. When the cruise control was activated the vehicle suddenly accelerated on its own. The contact was able to slow the vehicle down when he depressed the brake pedal. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The contact was not aware of the exact repair performed but stated the technician repaired the accelerator pedal. The failure continued after the vehicle was repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 20,000.

I have been to the dealership twice. I had it towed one of the times. The truck has been stalling out on me when i have been driving down the road. I purchased a new mazda 2300 mid march 2007. The sticker stated that it got 28 mpg. I immediately noticed that i was getting approximately 11 to 16 mpg. I took the vehicle to the dealership to be checked, roger beasley's premier mazda. The dealership found no problem ,and the manager stated that what it ) is and suppossed to get. I took the truck ito a different dealership, mazda south, and they found a faulty sensor. I noticed the truck was idiling at 2000 rpm. On thursday, april 5, 2007, i smelled gas and the truck's engine caught on fire. The truck was totaled. The dealership informed me that that is your problem. *ak
On december 20, 2004, i tried to crank my new 2004 rx-8 to go to work. It was 19 degrees outside. The car would not crank. It had been sitting for 2 days over the weekend. Unfortunately, i took it out of gear and did not place it back in. When i got out of the car and went inside, it rolled, hitting a tree causing $3800 dollars worth of damage. The tree was hit very hard and the airbag did not deploy. Apparently, this car "supposedly" was recalled and fixed while still owed by the mazda dealership according to their records. However, after having it towed into the service department, it had not been fixed. I was never told of any of these problems or recalls prior to the purchase of the car. *ak
Since february 2005 i have had my mazda rx8 serviced for engine noises, deceleration problems, stalling problems and restart problems. The vehicle begins to idle rough and just stalls out (twice in the middle of busy intersections with oncoming traffic-life threatening situation) and cannot be restarted. The vehicle has to be towed in to the dealership for restart. The pcm has been reflashed several times, plugs have been changed and the problem still persists. I am afraid for my life and will not let anyone else ride in the car with me. The service department at the dealership is aware of the life threatening situation and i want to know if i have any recourse in getting mazda to buy back a car i cannot drive. My luck will run out in this vehicle and not only will i be injured or killed, but so will other drivers (oncoming traffic or traffic behind me). I have called mazda headquarters twice about this recurring problem and am awaiting a call back from the second phone call into mazda. Apparently they don't feel it is as bad as it is. *nm
Dt: this mazda had a vibration problem . Recently, had a stalling problem. The dealer tried to get consumer to trade i in vehicle. This started happening on june 30, 2005.*ak
While pulling into my driveway, i was braking to park while the automatic transmission was still in drive. Suddenly, the engine started to rev on its own, while my foot was on the brake. The tachometer started reading in the danger zone, and the engine was revving out of control. White smoke started to come out from under the hood. I was able to put the car into park and turn off the engine. It was quite a frightening experience.
2 occurances in 3000 miles of engine loosing power, then starts to buck above 3500-4000 rpm. This first happened on the freeway and it was difficult staying out of the way of traffic until i could exit. The second occurance was after i had exited the freeway onto a 2 lane. I then drove 30 miles to home. Both times it was ok the next morning. Dealer cannot replicate the problem. Several owners of this model car (2004 mazdaspeed miata )have had this problem as reported on www.mazda-speed.com forum.

Engine stalls--on hot days--you're on expressway you can feel power loss---then when you get off expressway or hit traffic jam --the car stalls...sometimes you can get it to start..and idle is bad but main goal is to get out of the way.....sometimes if on the side of road you can sit for awhile and then start it up like nothing happened???

My mazda b3000 pickup would not stop at a red light causing an accident. When i engaged the brake the front end shook and then there were no brakes. The day of the accident there was a light rain but i had not driven through any puddles, therefore i don't think it was due to "wet" brakes as i have been told. Ultimately my brakes did not work, i only have 30k miles on the vehicle, and i will fear driving it once the body has been fixed. I have never had a vehicle that wouldn't stop and i feel there is something mechanically wrong. I had over 2 car lengths and due to the fact this is a fairly new vehicle, there is not reason it should not have stopped prior to impacting another vehicle. *jb

Madza 2005 tribute, ccasional brake failure - 3 times - brakes work fine, then go nearly to floor when fails. The engine speeds up slightly, just like hitting the clutch before brakes. The dealer is replacing the master cyclinder, but i think the problem is a race condition between the awd and the brakes - the awd might think that the brakes are really an indication of slippage, so the awd tells the abs not to activate. The dealer cannot explain how the brakes recover if the master cylinder is at fault. I also suspect that the dealer "erased" any previous information concerning repairs on this vehicle. I had bought this vehicle with 4005 miles and the brakes failed me three times already in the next 800 miles. *ak

On several occasions, my mazda truck b300 v6 model has locked up on its brakes. The vehicle comes equipped with an abs (four-wheen anti-lock system) which prevents it from locking up during driving conditions. However, on four varied situations in location, weather conditions and mileage apart 20,000, 30,000-35,000, 40,000 (considering three of them was before i hit 50k and then after getting my 60k service matienance)61k, my front end tires locked up while merging onto a highway; turning leftu nderneath an underpass; proceedin forward on a major road in houston, tx; and while just making a normal turn, not a sharp turn, but turning into a neighborhood, austin, tx. I in all occassions have had my foot firmly applied to the brakes and stilli lost control of the steering, with both my hands on the wheel, and had to turn the truck off after managing not to hit the car directly to my left on at least three reoccurrences. All under rainy or wet conditions where the road was level, normal, congested, or going downward on a smooth slope in elevation. I mentioned it to the dealership twice and was told that, that lost of traction was due to elevation of the truck and pressing the gas while i turned left. On the past three occassions i did not have my foot on the gas turning, ever while turning. I like my truck, but i could've had caused some major car wrecks due to some malfunctioning. *ak

*jb
Driving on paved road approaching stop sign, pressed pedal had full pedal no brakes. Proceeded out on to state hwy. I was struck on the bed area by another passenger p.u. Truck, traveling at hwy. Speed. *jb
Vehicle was in parked in front of the hardware store with consumer's foot on brake, and vehicle still on. Took foot off brake, and vehicle lunged forward, hit the curb, went up on the sidewalk, and straight into the store. *ak
This vehicle was smoldering burning and smoke without fire. I have taken my vehicle in for repairs 5 times for the transmission and other related issues. This vehicle as had a new transmission added within two months of ownership and it still leaks. The brakes pads wear to fast. *nm
Being in one dealer 4 times and another one time. Still not fixed whining noise in back, ticking and clicking noise in rotor/ brake, air conditioner, heat, rough drive, and seat sagging. New dealer verified the problems, and said all was the characteristic of the car, but we fixed the rotor/brake noise by resurfacing the rotor. The first dealer already did the resurfacing. But no fix. That wasa what 2d dealer verified in 1st place. I did not have any more time to waste by going to 3rd dealer. Not fix as of 4/9/07. What else i need to do? Car has 36,ooo miles. *ak
*ak
The right front brake line on the truck ruptured during breaking. Luckily this happened in a parking lot, so there was no damage or injuries.
Tl*the contact owns a 2002 mazda b3000. The contact received a safety recall notice and took her vehicle to the mazda dealer on september 26, 2007. The dealer deactivated the cruise control switch, however, the abs light illuminated the same day. The vehicle was returned to the dealer on september 27, 2007. Mazda reconnected the cruise control switch and informed her that the safety recall did not apply to her vin. She stated that the abs light was not illuminated when she brought the vehicle in for the recall repair. The purchase date and recall number were unknown. The current and failure mileages were 28,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2001 mazda b3000 4x4 pickup. The contact stated that after taking the vehicle in for regular service, the technicians advised him that the frame and the brake lines were severely rusted. The vehicle was repaired for the frame. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000. The vin was unavailable. When the mazda was lifted to repair the brake line and replace the brakes the spring shackles broke off due to extreme rust, costing an additional $450. I think mazda should be held responsible just as toyota recalled their vehicles due to extreme rusting. Updated 11/09/2011 *ln *tr

I broadsided a pick up truck that ran a stop sign. Enough damage was done that my vehicle had to be towed and likely will be written off by the insurance company as totaled. I was diagnosed with blunt trauma to the chest wall with contusions. My airbag never deployed. *tr
My truck sat for a while I charged the Batt. I drove to the landfill in Tehachapi Ca. It ran fine. I unloaded the trash the engine idled for 30+min. The landfill had debris on the ground. The truck ran fine back to town. I had 3/4 fuel. I decided to fill up at the Loves gas station I filled it all the way 2 clicks I think. I started up the truck after fueling it ran terribly I had a flashing check engine light. I drove home 2milles when home the truck was on FIRE!! I turned off engine. Put lots of h20 on fire. Disconnected Batt put more h20. I don't know if it started at gas station or in between. I can ask neighbors. The fire was under the driver's seat underneath the truck. I don't know if it was damaged by debris at the dump there was lots of [XXX] on the ground. It has not been inspected yet. I have not started any repairs. No police report. No damage to any one or property (except my truck). It is in my driveway and can be inspected there or towed. No pictures but I can take some. I am glad it didn't cause the gas station to go up in flames. Yes I have it insurance. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Chassis is rusting out. Drivers side rear spring shackle, bracket fell off and need to be replaced costing me about $500.00. Mazda b2300 is also a Ford Ranger which also has similar issues. My truck has about 170,000 miles on the odometer. The drive train is strong; idles and runs smooth, does not burn oil.
This is the second time i've asked this same question. Ford recalled these vehicles and the mazda "b" series pick-up is made by ford shouldn't mazda check theirs too? 2004 ford ranger structure: frame and members:underbody shields summary: on certain pickup trucks, the frame may have a center rail section flange that was not formed properly. Consequence: in the event of a side impact crash, the frame rail scould puncture the fuel tank, resulting in a fuel leak. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire. Remedy: dealers will inspect the frame to determine whether the frame was incorrectly manufactured. If there is a problem, the vehicle will not be repaired. Ford and the dealer will replace the vehicle. The recall began on july 19, 2004. Owners should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673. Notes: ford motor company 04s19 . *ak
The entire frame rusted out from under my truck. While driving down the street, the spare tire fell away from the bottom of the truck, ripping off the left side of the bumper. I have been to numerous garages about repair and none will touch it. The say that this is a problem with the mazda truck (and sister truck a ford). The body of the truck is still in great shape. It only has 90600 miles on it. There is not any rusting on the outside of the truck. Everything but the frame would run for another 90000 mile easily! I feel that something should be done about this problem. It is such a waste of money to have it just rot away!
Discovered the right rear spring hanger had rusted off the frame of the truck. Further inspection has found the frame is so badly rusted that repair of the spring hanger is not possible due to the overall condition of the frame. Simply put, the frame has rotted and pieces fall of as you drive. There is no more frame left to re-attach the rear spring to. Severe premature rust. The rest of the vehicle metal is in good condition. *tr

2001 - rear leaf spring shackles & brackets rot off the frame. Replaced both. The entire area of the frame where the bumper, leaf spring, spare tire and trailer hitch attach is all extremely rotted. The garage where repaired mentioned to keep checking the frame periodically, as it may rot faster than they can estimate. *tr
2008 - rear leaf spring shackle rots off. Replaced both. 2009 - shackle bracket falls off with about 6" of the frame with it. My only option was to personally weld a piece of metal and fabricate a new bracket. The other side will fail soon as well. The entire area of the frame where the bumper, leaf spring, spare tire and trailer hitch attach is almost gone. The weird thing is that the body is sound. The bed is no more than an inch away and looks new. *tr
